my father told me he read it, but he hasn't read it. that's okay. my friends keep picking the words out of my throat.
someone once told me that the more trigger warnings that go on a book, the better it is. i didn't mean to write something with so many conditional phrases - i was writing about what i felt while being a human. sometimes you are a person and sometimes you are a statistic. sometimes it is falling upwards and sometimes it's sliding back down again.
my father tells me that it will be difficult to get people to read it. i didn't like the idea of a singular genre. i'm not going to lie to you - it is actually a difficult book to get through. i change the rules in it. it's not poetry or prose explicitly. it's neither false nor reality. i give you the tools to "solve" the book, but i let you do the thinking. my father says people don't care to think. i don't know about that - i think we just, like, enjoy reading.
the thing is - i was tired of stories about survival where someone with depression goes to therapy and wakes up okay. i didn't live like that. i was tired of books about violence, where the gore of what i experience was splashed in glitter to lick off the page. like, i was a person, you know? i had a life and a job and a family. and in books, i watched my story get ripped up so people could explore the viscera of my body. so they could feel good. my brother once called it inspiration pornography. we had walked out of a suicide-prevention seminar, both of us disgusted while the increasingly-elated presenter kept listing methods-of. i remember the look on my brother's face. like i would tear that man apart given the right time and place.
my father says that kids these days. he warns me against writing about things that are too-serious. he says that they don't want it. i don't listen. he does make me take out a scene from the book where i go to church after having sex with a woman. it used to be the 7th scene in the book. i don't think he's read further than that, it rocked him too hard to continue.
it's a book about being queer. it's a book about being raised catholic. it doesn't have monsterfucking, i'm sorry. it's just about, like.
at some point you have to choose to stay here. and then you do have to stay here, which takes practice. this is about forming the habit. this is about what happens after you've already started doing the work. because, like. you keep going. you have to. and it's like. very imperfect.
i should make a post on instagram. i should make this announcement less bittersweet. but like -- i'm giving it you, specifically, because i think you know why i had to write it. you and me. this little community.
body's a bad monster. here's the link if you're interested in ordering.
#i will never shut up about this#by the way . this is the book that u are trying to get me to eat#also available on other links!! barnes and noble and s&S#also btw i drew the cover :) they asked me to lol#btw this isn't self-published. this is like. book deal thru simon and schuster

That viral post that's going around about how people who write "book quality" mlm fic are too "normal" to publish and have real jobs so only "weird" people publish their "shitty" fanfic is so completely out of touch with reality and I am giving a massive side eye to everyone reblogging it.
Not only is it completely, easily verifiably untrue (you cannot enter any professional writing space without tripping over a dozen grizzled scifi writers who got their start by filing off the serial numbers and publishing their Star Trek fanfic even going back decades ago??? it's a whole thing?? plus how can you look at the mlm category on Amazon right now and say with a straight face that people aren't publishing shitty Spirk and Stucky fanfic??? Oh, honey...) it's also the perfect example of this kind of sneering elitism that true artists would never sully themselves by seeking profit, they do it only for the purity of the thing that always somehow leads back to, "no one should be paid to make art, actually."
The only reason you're seeing more published fanfic right now has nothing to do with the idealistic purity of your hypothetical government employee written smut of the past vs the debased scribbles of those awful straights of today and everything to do with the fact that a) self-publishing has created a voracious readership that wants a ton of content so it's become a viable, flexible income stream for many, especially disabled people b) anyone can publish now with self-publishing tools so there are less gatekeepers and c) lockdown got a lot of people into fandom and therefore writing who never tried it before.
And if you really think there's no "shitty" published mlm and no "book-quality" m/f writing out there that started as fanfic, then you are clearly not a reader so why are you even talking about this?
#love how they manipulated people into spreading that post by making it seem like a cishet vs gay thing#when the real message is OP thinks trying to sell your writing is cringe and 'weird' and 'normal people' with jobs would never#which would of course never have flown on the fandom website#so they played into the queer shipping is purer than cishet shipping puriteen thing#and it worked!#because my god people are gullible#this is the direct pipeline that leads to AI thievery#''normal' people write for the joy of it anyway so why do you need pay? you are just greedy and 'weird'!'#'oh no this isn't about who we get to call cringe and who gets to profit from art it's about um...#(quick what's a hated m/f ship?).. oh uh 'shitty' REYLO#and not our super pure uh... (spirk is still popular right? lets throw in that avengers one too to make it seem timely) stucky!'#I'm sorry if I have no sense of humor about this but the year is 2024 and people are still way too ready to sneer#about writers trying to earn a fucking living in the shittiest timeline#and i need you to look deep into yourself and ask you why it's so important to you to tell yourself that only people writing what you like#are 'normal' with real jobs and to vilify everyone else as 'weird' and 'shitty'#for trying to make an income during a financial fucking crisis#i would say sorry for ranting about this but I'm not sorry because wtf#write whatever you want#publish whatever you want#there is no moral fucking purity in what the content is#and one thing certainly doesn't make you more 'weird' or 'normal' than the other#like there is soooo much shitty mlm that started as fanfic???#that post is 100% OP made up some guys to get mad about and called them relyos for the clicks#writing#publishing#writblr#writeblr#i wasn't going to tag this anything but you know what fuck it I'm mad#i had like 5 more tags but tumblr cut me off which is fair 😅#fan fiction

Every time I see someone clamoring for an HDG story with a concept that I’ve written about I always feel so weird. Like. Do I tell them I have a story with a transmasc in it? Or with someone who’s non-binary? Or with a Puppy-girl? Or that my story has cute nonverbal sex? I’ve seen people on here and in the discord saying they want these things but it feels wrong to be like “oh I wrote something with that! Try it out!” I don’t want people to think I’m advertising or being rude. I just want people to have a fun time and it seems like if they like those things they might like what I’ve written but I don’t know.
Anyways if you *are* interested in those things, maybe try my HDG story “Myosotis”? You might like it. But if not, that’s okay too.
#HDG#human domestication guide#a lot of this isn't published yet as editing is taking me a while#but i'm so excited to get there and want people to enjoy!!!#notart#and now back to your regularly scheduled art posts

as a baby butch i really appreciate your blog,, i feel so lost sometimes esp as a black butch as i haven't seen many sources on other studs,, so just having these lists is really awesome :)
Hey, thanks so much for reaching out, lovely to hear from you! I'm glad the lists are helping you, honestly that's everything I could have hoped for. Unfortunately, I have also found that it's strangely difficult to find material on black butches and studs ... but I am on the hunt nevertheless! As of the past two weeks a few more black lesbian anthologies have arrived and I have a few more lined up that I hope to procure soon--all this to say that I hope to present more material to you that suits your interests in the days & weeks to come. I hope we both can find good stuff for you. :)
(Which, speaking of ... if ANYONE out there happens to know where the treasure trove of black butches & stud lore is, I would happily trade my best cheesecake and/or cookie recipes for this knowledge. I can also provide manual labor and cleaning services.)
#questions for the archivist#the archivist answers#i have also found a couple short documentaries that have black lesbians/studs in it but it doesn't go enough into stud culture and history#i would say anyways#there's also the 2005 film the aggressives that i have heard good things about but haven't watched myself yet#i have found one book specifically published by a stud but it was published in 2023 and also appears very informal#which definitely isn't a bad thing but as a person who always wants to find citations so i can find MORE books ... i fear this local legend#may not help me find the pot of gold at the end of the black rainbow#thankfully i am nosy as fuck#i will get to the bottom of this come hell or high water!

The worst part about reading in a genre where you have low expectations (in this case, Christian historical fiction) is that when a book impresses you, you have no idea if it's actually good or if you're just overly impressed because it was a fraction of a degree better than the usual garbage.
#basically lately anytime i read a christian fiction book that isn't romance-based i find myself surprised by the quality#i do think that some christian publishers are getting better#and trying to tell stories that dig deeper into real faith and messy issues#instead of making only vapid squeaky clean prayer-filled tropefests#but i'm not sure *how much* better#because anything above the low bar feels like great literature#the most recent is 'in a far-off land' by stephanie landsem#and let me tell you setting the prodigal son in 1930s hollywood is a genius concept#i have some issues with the history and the mystery#but the characters!#it has been a long time since i cried this hard over a book#several chapters of solid waterworks#(and i also have the issue of figuring out if it's actually that moving or if i'm just hormonal/sleep-deprived)#i keep thinking about this book but also i worry about recommending because what if it's actually terrible by normal book standards?#(also the author DOES NOT understand the seal of confession and i was SHOCKED to find that she's actually catholic)#but also looking at the reviews makes it clear that if most of christian fiction is vapid garbage it's these reviewers' fault#here you have something that's digging into sin and darkness and justice and mercy and these people are just#'how can it call itself christian fiction if it only mentions god at the end?'#are we reading the same book this WHOLE THING is about god! and humanity and our fallen nature and how this breaks relationships!#your pearl-clutching anytime someone tries to get even a tiny bit realistic is destroying this genre#i'm gonna run out of tags so i'll stop now

Girl, help, the book authors are trying too hard to be "hip" with the fleeting "teen lingo" and trends again, immediately dating their works before they're even released
#eye twitching seeing certain modern slang in for real published books unironically#tiktokian slang that is out of date within weeks#it's a pet peeve of mine but so is modern books mentioning tiktok or stuff at all esp. when not relevant in general#god it pulls you out of the illusion#turns it into this very set in stone time frame rather than letting it just be or resonate on its own which is fine sometimes if natural#you can't avoid some mentions of some things when setting it today but in these cases it's so forced#hello fellow kidz.jpeg vibe in book form#books#this isn't even specific to ya books i've seen it in adult books as well#booklr#petty as i am i once stopped reading a first chapter excerpt for mentioning spotify by name on page 1 i'm sorry#this other book though oh they've used online phrases and boomer insult 3 times and brought up tiktok twice it's on thin f-ing ice#ignore me i'm petty but don't ignore me because this is a legit problem in the media industry#don't even get me started on text speak in the dialogue or texting sections yeah#it's not quite as bad if it's some fake variation of an app or just generic about being online but mentioning by name oh i'm gonna explode#most times anyway#i have yet to see it handled well#this was about slang though so tangent but !! gaah

week of inactivity
hey guys,
just heads up, I doubt that I'll be active next week as it's my full on vacation and ngl I don't feel like I belong to fandom spaces as a writer anymore.
I am absolutely one for 'you curate your experience on this godforsaken platform' but I can't lie: I am just so tired of being a fanfic writer. I have done it for more than five years and it has just gotten worse through time.
it's the fact that I sometimes receive comments that'll be like drive-through orders (somebody recently was like 'oh I'd like if you could write longer fics', I am sorry I doing an internship and the lack of feedback makes it difficult for me to write).
either way end of this rant: I am tired, I love writing but it sucks to publish and I'll be mostly off this week as I want to focus my energy on relaxing and not being stuck on silly thoughts.
love yah.
#angsti rambles#angsti:writing_posts#also like I can't help but think that my writing isn't good#idk maybe I should be more carefull and proofedit more#but at the same time this is an hobby for me#and idk it's just gotten so much more serious and annoying as of lately and I think I should just drop it#I have tried but ugh the writing is just pushing#and then I try to stop myself from publishing but oh well#btw I don't think that anybody will care about this I just needed to get this off my chest

i havent finished that video so this isn't about that but i think the real and most obvious criticism of the big boom of The Modern Feminist Novelized Retelling of ancient greek myth/lit is how every person considered a prominent contributor to the genre is white and (almost always) british or american
#they are all white all of them. like every single person writing that specific brand of feminist retellings is a white british woman#it isn't a coincidence!#june.txt#and obviously there are recent reception works by authors of colour (home fire and salvage the bones i think most prominently)#but i wonder why only white authors get the specific Feminist Retellings published and marketed that way!

“Oh, you write books?”
Yup! And I love it.
Here’s the published list so far, with relevant tags for all the extra content and ramblings that inevitably end up here.
“If you set Dirty Jobs in outer space, mixed in some Mythbusters, and gave Buster the crash-test dummy the ability to sass back like a cross between Bender and Murderbot… you’d get something like this book.”
“Spectacular Silver Earthling” is available wherever books are sold!
Relevant tags: Hubcap the robot Hubcap the Egomaniacal Sassmaster (there’s some crossover there) Spectacular Silver Earthling
“When space poachers release Earth animals on an alien world, threatening a fragile new alliance, they anger the wrong people. A veterinarian, an accountant, and a furious sign-language-fluent gorilla are coming for them.”
“A Swift Kick to the Thorax” is also available everywhere!
This is the one I’ve been posting backstory snippets for weekly, from when the main character was traveling the galaxy working on a courier ship.
There are also comic strips, which take place between the stories and the book. I should really draw more of those. They’re fun.
Relevant tags: A Swift Kick to the Thorax The Token Human (series name; originally just the comics) Robin Bennett (the main character)
Do you long to write fascinating fiction, but struggle to find a concept that feels worthy?
Do you have piles of unfinished stories, and eagerly await the next shiny new idea?
Do you have writer friends to inflict assistance/benevolent torment on?
Good news! I have precisely one bazillion ideas for stories that someone ought to write, and I’ve selected 100 of them to collect in this book. You may recognize some from my old posts here, but not all.
"Story Seeds for Fantastical Trees" promises to grow you a forest of compelling ideas, ranging from wizards both wise and foolish, to aliens seeking dinosaurs, to a robot that lets a vampire into the house (possibly on purpose).
Relevant tag: writing prompts (buckle in; this one is A Lot)
“In science fiction, humans are usually boring compared to other races: small, weak, no claws or tentacles, and no special abilities to speak of. What if instead, we were talked about by the other aliens? 28 authors have contributed to make sure you never think of humans as boring again!”
“We’re the Weird Aliens” is the “humans are weird / humans are space orcs” collection that had everyone excited in 2020.
Relevant tags: humans are weird humans are space orcs (and a bunch of others, but mostly that first one) (and you'll find the Token Human stuff tagged here too)
“An old street sweeper takes on the shadowy invaders responsible for a plague of amnesia, while saddled with a dodgy memory, a mysterious past, and a reflection that talks back and makes fun of him.”
My first published book! I still love it. Magic, memory problems, and walloping ruffians with a broom. What’s not to love?
Relevant tags: Sweeping Changes
And that’s everything so far, as of August 2023!
Not counting the anthologies that other people put together, which I have stories in. (I’ll point you to my website for those.)
I am definitely working on more books. So many more. I write as a way of going on adventures, and I will happily take you with me.
#long post#my writing#books#getting published#book recs#writeblr#authors#writing community#good thing I proofread this; I spelled 'relevant' wrong twice#no idea why#good job there fingers#way to type#anyway!#here's the info post I've been meaning to get around to#isn't it shiny and exciting

i don't think anything will ever get me to see the ending of little women (2019) in any other way than jo and professor bhaer ending up together in real life but that not initially being a part of the book until her publishers ask for it to be
#like of course the point is that the climax of jo's story isn't getting married and is getting her book published#i just think professor bhaer is also a real part of the story#.txtpost
