Yknow one thing I hate to do is compare mechas given they’re all pretty different even putting the clear influence a lot have on each other aside and I don’t like the idea that I’ve seen a lot of mecha fans subscribe to where “if you like this one show you HAVE to like these other ones” but this is less of a comparison thing especially because I’m not petty or anything since it’s just something I thought about:

Mazinger v Getter when it comes to their recognition tends to boggle my mind a bit. Since it feels like there are more dedicated Getter fans around that talk about it than Mazinger fans, but Mazinger is more recognizable to the point it gets more funded stuff than Getter.

I was thinking about this when I was watching Mazinkaiser, and I can’t confirm this but I found it interesting that it almost (felt) like this ova spawned out of Getter making a comeback before Mazinger did, since Armageddon came before and was massive hit, than was followed up with a game + shin vs neo by the time Mazinkaiser was made. Like they even got Armas art director to work on it and the studio doing it was Brains Base who made the getter OVAs.

And in terms of recently all the stuff with Grendizer, which I know was SUPPOSED to get another an anime way before this, is now finally getting something coincidentally after Getter Robo Arc. And everyone is already pointing out between the two Grendizer looks waaay better then Arc so it’s clear it has more money put into it, yet I wonder if Arc didn’t happen if they would bother to touch Grendizer since Arc was them also finally giving the Getter team who NEVER got to be in a anime- well, a anime. And now the most neglected pilot apart of Mazingers universe is getting his own show.

I understand why Mazinger is more known and funded since it was the first self piloted mecha and something Go Nagai, a man who arguably changed the industry a lot, made so his works are always gonna be rebooted for the sake of memory, where as Getter sorta lives in Nagai’s shadow sadly even if Ishikawa memory is respected, but I feel like almost Getter is the one to test if things will work and then they’ll see if they can do stuff with Mazinger again.

Or maybe it’s just two coincidences and we’re just going through a long coming mecha renaissance of older properties of the genre, but I’m still rotating it heavily.

Authors note: I’ve seen so many siblings/friends on tiktok try this trend so this is my take on this trend but with our fav siblings.

“Ughh change the dang channel Arthur” The girl groaned finally having enough of her older brother hogging the TV, “Get outta my face” he replies rolling his eyes pushing her away.

“You are so selfish! You’ve been hogging the TV since Enzo left, which was 4 hours ago” she says snatching the remote away from him which resulted in the boy getting up and trying to snatch it back. “Give it back Y/N!” He says reaching out to get it. She leans back her hand away from his, only for the remote to be grabbed by someone else.

“Gosh you two are unbearable” Charles says rolling his eyes shutting the TV off. The two younger ones looked at him in disgust, “Ugh I hate when Charles actually starts acting like an Older sibling” Y/N says, “I know right? It dosent suit him at all” Arthur says, the two teaming up against Charles all of of a sudden.

“Excuse me? You should be greatful I’m doing this, your brains are rotting and frankly I can’t stand hearing you argue one more time, so we’re gonna do something, as a family, that dosent involve the TV” he says, “Fine, what would you like to do Charles” The Girl says taking a seat on the couch, Arthur took a seat next to her. The two looked at each other in annoyance before moving away from each other.

“Well, we should try baking a cake” Charles says enthusiastically, “a cake? Charles no offense but you guys do not know how to bake” the girl says snickering only to recieve a smack on the back of her head. “Arthur, I’m gonna kill you” she says before lunging on him, “alright that’s enough, Arthur go sit on the chair” Charles says, “This isn’t over” he says squinting his eyes at the girl to which she reciprocated by sticking her tongue out.

“Anyways, we’re gonna bake a cake but one of us will be blinded, one of us will be deaf, and one of us will be mute” Charles said. “Respectfully, no Thankyou” Arthur says, “What why?” He asks him.

“I can’t stand Y/N when she’s fully capable of doing things, I don’t have that type of patience” he says getting up to walk to his room, Y/N scoffed “Bitch” she whispered under her breath, “Tur… I didn’t want to resort to this but if you don’t do this, I’m gonna tell Maman that you’re the one who broke her vase” Charles says, He gasps, “You wouldn’t” He says, “He might not, but for sure will” The Girl says giving him an evil smile, “Ugh fine” He says succumbing to the request against his own will.

While Arthur and Charles went to the store to get the stuff for the cake, Y/N took out all the utensils, bowls, and other stuff, she even made 3 chits to make it even on who gets to be what. About 30 minutes later, the brothers return and Y/N has changed into an old T-shirt that she doesn’t really care about. Alas, the siblings were ready to pick their chits and get started on the cake.

“Y/N you should pick last” Arthur says, “Don’t we all pick at the same time?” Charles asks, “She could have sabotaged it to get the one she wants” he says eyeing her suspiciously, “Arthur has anyone ever told you how annoying you are?” She says shaking the bowl with chits, “No, because I’m not” He replies, she rolls her eyes before letting the boys before her pick their chits.

“We open it at the same time ok?” Charles says, When Y/N grabs hers, the three open it at the same time. “Hah! I get to listen to music while I do this” The Girl says happy she got the loud music option, “I cant talk” Charles says groaning, “You think that’s bad? I have to blindfolded! She cheated I demand a redo” Arthur says putting his paper back in the bowl, “It’s not my fault you’re such a sore loser” she says, “Guys it’s fine, let’s just get started on this cake” Charles says officially being done with his younger siblings.

Little did Charles know that baking this cake was the worst decision he could have ever made in his life. With Arthur not being able to see, Y/N not being able to hear, and him not being able to speak, this was for sure gonna be a distaster.

As Arthur grabbed the eggs, well as he attempted to grab it he struggled considering he couldn’t see, “Can someone give me the egg” He asked, “WHAT?” Y/N screamed not being able to hear anything, “Damn stop yelling” He says, Charles visibility rolling his eyes, that didn’t go unnoticed by the youngest Leclerc, “Can someone please Hand me the egg already” Arthur said. Charles handed the egg, Only for Arthur to completely miss the bowl, “Oh you dumbass” Y/N said slapping her hand on her forehead, “What? What happened” Arthur questioned, Charles pushed him out of the way.

“TUR YOU GOTTA STAY AWAY FROM HERE” The Girl says before grabbing a paper towel and cleaning the dropped egg. Little by little the siblings worked their way into making a heart shaped, vanilla flavored cake.

“Now this is the hard part, the decorating” the girl sighed, “hand me the icing” Arthur said, “ARTHUR SPEAK UP” she says, “I SAID HAND ME THE ICING” he says, matching her volume. “OHHH” as she was about to Charles stopped her, shaking his head no, she put the icing back down.

“Hello? Charles? Y/N?” He asks, “WE GOTTA WAIT FOR THE CAKE TO COOL DOWN” Y/N says, the siblings waited and waited, with a lot of ups and downs (Arthur making a mess, Y/N screaming and Charles being a victim) the siblings were finally done. They took of their headphones, blindfold, and cloth off. “Finally lord” Charles says, “This was your idea, and it was the dumbest idea ever” Arthur says rolling his eyes, “It was actually fun, I wish Enzo could be here too, I rarely get to see you guys nowadays” the girl says her mouth spilling all of her heart’s secrets.

“Aw Chérie” Charles says pulling the girl into a hug, Arthur joins in which suprised her a little, “I love all you guys so much” she says, “we love you too” they says unanimously. The 3 were so caught up in their moment they didn’t notice the oldest Leclerc sibling come enter the house and kitchen.

“What the hell is that supposed to be?” Enzo questioned.

“A cake? I learned it from culinary club at school”

“We need to get a refund for those classes”

If I’m being honest, you are all getting way too hung up on fake diseases and attacking a writer as if he personally attacked your family. I looked up the effects of low gravity on the human body: I learned something new about science. I tried to put into words why this detail is harder to accept than Sonic breathing in space: this is about stories and world building. I immediately found a replacement idea. We discussed about SA2, its gameplay mechanics, its cutscenes. Someone even brought up the idea of drawing parallels with AIDS and how it would affect Maria. Negativity can stem from a place of reasoning, "how would I do that?", and it makes me use my brain in a fun way. I'm aware it's a inconsequential detail, but I'm having fun!

Why do we need to twist jackie into something else to like her? Like, if you see jackie as kind and loving and generally just a teenage girl trying to do her best, right? Why then do parts of her have to be “explained away” to a degree? She’s the striker and captain of a nationals bound team. Why does she have to not be a successful athlete to align with the sweetness that you see in her? Yes, coach martinez tells her she isn’t the best on the team, but we see how they treat allie who isn’t actually up to par. There’s nothing to indicate that jackie isn’t very good. Why does she actually have to be friendless besides shauna? Yes, it’s clear those two are codependent and mostly attached at the hip, but in the pilot we aren’t given reason to think that jackie is some friendless unliked girl. She’s socializing with different people and they seem to like her plenty. When she lines the team up yeah, there’s eye rolling, but they listen to her and they seem to mostly take her compliments fondly. She’s homecoming queen, that’s decided on by people voting you in and, generally speaking, you have to be liked and known by a lot of people for that to happen (again if you’re someone who thinks she’s an evil manipulative bitch somehow, this isn’t directed at you lmao).

Why can’t a girl be pretty and decently popular and talented at her sport and be kind and lovable? Why do we see a girl like jackie and need her to be secretly bad at that shit and not widely liked to find her palatable?

Like (1) girl is either truly pretty and popular and talented, so she’s a bitch OR (2) girl is sweet, so she can’t actually be pretty and popular and talented.

That’s the formula we’re fed constantly and I’m really tired of it cause it’s rebranded misogyny that we internalize and accidentally project onto the world tbh and I’m guilty of that in ways, like I’ve been there!!!

But idk. Yeah, Jackie is awkward at times and not good at popping deer tendons and embarrassingly earnest and a lot of other things along those lines!! But you can be all those things and still be everything else she is y’know? That’s sort of my whole point.

Anyway, let girls be good at things without that making them a bitch is what I’m getting at, I guess. Because I see a lot of people defend jackie from the “she’s a mean bitch” hate by saying “no she’s not, she’s literally got one friend and she’s not even good at soccer.”

And it’s like WELL idk about that!! And even if that was true, why is THAT the automatic defense against someone calling her a bitch?? Why are those two things so heavily equated and not even viewed as a logical leap? Why is the defense not to bring up all the kind loving things we see her do, but to chip away at the traits that she possesses that we are trained to find obnoxious or hateable in women, but aren’t fucking innately bad?

Thinking about Victorie (Tori) Weasley

First things first I dont fuck with the approximated ages of this generation. I just- no. Like the math isn’t mathing for me, so in my head this is how it goes. I think Victorie is the eldest of the entire generation, I think she was born in 1998. That is not canonical but I like it so much more yk. I like to think that she’s older than Teddy by a couple months. I don’t think she was a planned baby (much like Teddy) but yk. Bill and Fleur were young and dumb and shit happens idk. I just don’t like the…let's say canonical implications of Teddy and Tori dating at such a young age, AND if Tori is born sometime during the war it's a little moral boost or whatever, this is what we're fighting for type shit, much like Teddy. (But this will also play into a headcanon that ill get into later in this post about like politics, social standings yadda yadda, so stay tuned)

I like to think that wizard genetics are weird, right. So in the case of the topic for this post, Victorie Weasley, this would mean that Tori and all of her siblings have Veela traits despite being like what an eighth (im dumb and bad at math so dont bully me if thats wrong) Veela. I like to think that Tori is the most Veela-like; where all of her siblings have the classic red Weasley hair she was born platinum blonde and just in general looks way more like her great-grandmother than anyone else in the family.

I think that she is kind of deemed precious by the entire family, I mean she was born in such a moment of darkness and provided so much hope for regrowth after the war and that never left.

That girl was spoiled, heavily.

I mean the first grandbaby and she’s a girl. Molly adores her like no other and definitely hovers a lot.

I think Tori being born is a major part in fixing the relationship between Molly and Fleur.

ALSO imagine being Tori and learning the lore behind your mother and your grandmothers relationship before your birth. I feel like most people have a point where after youve grown up, maybe when you’re a teenager or an young adult, where you get to know like the family drama; imagine just ONE (because the weasleys have other shit to that i can get into later) piece of your family drama/lore is that your grandmother used to have beef with your mom and straight up used to hate her. Like the grandmother that you adore used to talk shit about your mom. (That’s not an uncommon thing at all, I know that something that people go through but its still crazy yk)

I like to think that Tori and Teddy grew up like two peas in a pod. If they went more than like three days without each other when they would finally be reunited -especially as little toddlers- they were so dramatic, refusing to be more than 5 steps from each other.

I like to think George is the one who gave Victorie the nickname Tori and she just loved it so much that after the age of like eight she stopped answering to her full name unless her mom or grandmother (on her mothers side) was the one calling her.

Tori and Teddy are like the heads of the Next Gen. Way before they even became a couple they were the older cousins, they were respected and looked up to by the rest of the Next Gen, their just a power duo.

(I think Tori has like a two to three year distance between her and Dominique, and then I think that Dominique is kind of like the eldest of all the kids. So basically the next gen is Tori and Teddy, no kids born for the next 3 years, then Dominique then everyone else)

Tori and Dominique both grew up heavily in Veela culture. I can’t remember if I’ve said it on the blog or just thought about it alot but I think that they both were sent to Beauxbaton for a couple years for the equivalent of muggle elementary and then transferred to Hogwarts.

I think Tori ( because she is so Veela-like) perhaps got bullied and harassed. I’ve seen a lot of people dive into the implications of being Veela or part-Veela so I won’t get into it too much but Idefinitely think that she had her fair share of just straight bullying. 

Now a little bit of a switch up but stick with me. Imagine with me, that the Weasley family is a fallen noble house (maybe even ancient).

The house fell maybe during the first war or a little prior due to blood supremacy; they were clipped out the pureblood scene when they were just a little too loud. 

Now the house has fallen and post-secondary wars the Wizarding World in Europe is trying to rebuild itself. 

Tori (in my head) would take advantage of that. 

Listen, we've seen the Weasley family kind of get treated like shit because of their relationship with muggleborns and their financial situation and their lack of political influence. In theory if they were to rebuild the house there would be no better time than postsecondary war.

But I don't think that they do. Molly and Arthur are happy just to be with their family. All of the Weasley siblings we know of , except for Percy, are (for lack of a better word) free spirited non-socially conforming people yk. Bill is a curse-breaker, Charlie works with fucking dragons, the twins opened a joke shop and Ginny is a quidditch icon. I doubt they give a fuck about social status in the sense of regaining former political power. Especially because they all seem to have had it kind of easy. I mean yes we know they get comments about their finances and whatever but like…Weasleys are tough as shit, they'll just beat the shit out of you and call it a day.

Percy though is an exception, Percy did want to be in the Ministry. He was attempting to climb the ranks but I think after the war…after Fred’s death, he does not care, at least for the next few years.

I think Tori does care. I can see a world where Tori is getting harassed because she is part-Veela and I mean lets be real there must still be Death eater sympathisers at Hogwarts and Ican only imagine he fucking target the next gen had on their backs. I don't think that it's an issue for the other kids because well they have each other to rely on and the older cousins aka Tori and Teddy who as the eldest set the standard of like hey we are not meant to be fucked with. 

I think Tori and Teddy both faced heavy harassment for being half-blood and fought back. I think the two of them were perpetually in detention simply because they refused to sit there and take it.

I think Tori is bitter because of course this harassment isn’t just little kid petty ignorant bullshit, this expands into the grander political/social scene. Her family is beloved by half the Wizarding community sure, but they are seen as Harry Potter's sidekicks. The other half would kill them if they could get away with it. 

I think Tori looks around and sees that yes the war is over but ignorant purebloods still hold power. They still have their elite clubs and balls and still shoot down laws that could make change, I mean yeah a lot of people died or went to Azkaban but that was just Death Eaters, they are plenty of blood supremacists that couldn’t be convicted because well they haven’t done anything. They just refuse to let half-breeds into any important position of power *shrugs* voting against something isn’t illegal.

In theory the Weasley House could be great and as the eldest Tori is in a position to make it great. 

Tori Weasley looks at the snobby pureblood society and decides I am going to get in there and change it for the better or die trying.

Give me Tori Weasley who in her 5th year walks into Flitwick's office for her consultation on her future career paths with notebooks filled with information on Wizengamot, all the pureblood families, pureblood customs, etiquette, niche traditions, clubs, events, everything. Information on every level and subsection of the Ministry. 

Tori Weasley who works her ass off to be the top student of her year, before because she simply was competitive but as she gets older she is intentionally trying to stomp on every highly-tutored pureblood who thinks they have an advantage. She wants to be the best with no room for discussion and she is.

Give me Percy Weasley who is watching his niece grow up to be a mini him. She always had his tendencies even when she was at Beauxbaton, obsessed with rules and wanting to know everything. She looked up to him. But now, Christmas of her 6th year, 16 year old Tori was like looking in a slightly distorted mirror. She rallied her cousins and siblings, yelling at them if they were too loud or bumped into her, messing up what she was writing.

Percy warned Tori of greed and ambition and how blinding it could be. But Tori just had to respectfully shut him down. Greed? Ambition? Yes, yes she could admit she could find satisfaction in always being right but at the end of the day this wasn’t about her, this wasn’t for her.

This was for the family.

Tori didn’t want a position of power for herself.

She wants to rebuild the House of Weasley into a respectable name, politically, socially, and financially. She wanted to form allies with other like minded Houses like the Abbots, and wanted to formally politically oppose blood supremacy. 

She wanted their seat back in Wizengamot.

As the eldest she had much to gain from this, yes, she would be the head of the family… but she’s always been the head of the family. She gave the generation before her something to fight for during the war, she gave them something to live for after the war, she gave her generation a reputation to use for when they were at Hogwarts so that their years could be easier. And she would be giving all of her success to the next generation as well.

Tori is greedy and ambitious, yes, I mean you definitely won’t see her handing over the position as Head of the family to just anyone but so long as it benefits the family…

She starts her plan the second that she leaves HogwartsI think Tori is someone who becomes incredibly famous because of her efforts. I mean incredibly intelligent, beautiful, witty, and well known through coming from families that fought in both wars, I think she is set up to become a media darling. 

Photos of her arguing passionately in Wizengamot make it on the front page and that is where she gets her start. 

I think she grows into a name that is so well known that before she gets a seat in Wizengamot she’s already building connections.

I like to think that Tori is incredibly successful, that she reestablishes the House of Weasley and garners more respect for the House of Prewett. Tori is making political moves shutting down underhanded oppression and advocating for different communities. Tori is at every event, every ball, every club. And I mean even the ones whose crowds are primarily made up of blood supremacists. Why does she go? Because you never know what you’ll overhear. Why is she even invited? Because her name is too big in the Wizarding World to not be invited. 

I think Tori Weasley is the youngest member of Wizengaot ever, becoming the official representative of the family and taking up the seat for the family at age 22.

I think everyone is incredibly proud but I think Arthur is the most proud. I think he never held a passion for politics or House matters but I would imagine that he is old enough to remember what it was like when the Weasley name was respected and we know that he lived through the disrespect that the Ministry put them through after the first war. 

I imagine a seat in Wizengamot pre-first war used to be a symbol of status and respect because you have to fight your way to be an option to fill the seat and you have to be elected by your fellow Wizengamot members to actually take up the seat. Losing your seat in Wizengamot must feel devastating so to see it be regained, not only is personally satisfactory but also feels like a symbol of true progress.

Complete guide to Flickr and why you should use it

bc I got some things wrong but it’s still a very good website that we should all use instead of Instagram

1: Flickr isn’t tied to Meta or any of that Facebook bullshit, from my knowledge it doesn’t share your contacts so no one will get a notification that you joined, it’s safer that way and more private than Instagram.

2: It’s built for photos. Instagram kills quality of photos, if you’re an artist, especially a digital one, uploading to Flickr would be way better for people to actually see detail and the color.

Going on with this because it’s built for photos, while it can host video, it doesn’t have TikTok/Reels and lives which is soooo nice. Like I don’t hate that stuff, but I like that Flickr isn’t trying to catch on the latest trends.

3: There isn’t likes. Flickr is mainly for sharing and LOOKING at photos. The most interaction you can get one on one is commenting, following, and favoriting. Favoriting is basically the public saves, no one really faves things on there unless it’s a recipe or for a reference or something.

4: Groups. Flickr does have an option for communities to make groups in where you can share similar interests MOST OF THESE ARE DEAD BUT WE CAN BRING THEM BACK!!! (IM BEGGING)

5: The bios are unlimited ( I think ), I copy and pasted the entire Bee Movie script three times along with my own bio that was already in there. I’m always pissed when I have to trim my bio, so bitches who like to put everything in their bio this website is for YOU

6: It’s in chronological order. Everything. You can even look up when certain posts where made by year, month, even fucking day. The archives of Flickr are so fucking fun.

7: Its not a contest. The main reason as to why I fucking hate Instagram (other than they took away chronological order and being able to see the recents under a tag) is that it focuses too much on “#aesthetic” even on the casual Instagram side people are still posing and trying to make an aesthetic of it. Flickr is just for photos you like, which yes can be aesthetic, but it’s mainly for daily life. You will see older people just posting what they are working on, maybe a cat they saw at the store, nothing planned. Just a quick unprompted click.

8: Organization, Flickr let’s you have Albums which is where you can organize all your photos in much like Pinterest. Most do it by year but others do it by topic too.

9: You can upload photos in bulk. You don’t have to upload them one by one, or at a limit of ten, you can upload a FUCK ton of photos at once.

10: if you don’t like ads and want more storage space, the pro version is extremely cheap compared to Netflix. Netflix without ads is fucking $15.49 and Flickr is $8.25 a month. There are also two other payment plans if that’s still too much for you.

11: It allowed adult content. In like. Every form. Enough said

CONS

1: You can’t DM (this is not a con to me and I hate when people complain about this just fucking use a email it is so fun to email people please for the love of god)

I have to ask: As someone who used to work in social media and who knows a lot about current pop culture happenings, why was Succession so popular/successful? My parents are OBSESSED with it now, not a day passes where they don’t watch at least two episodes after dinner and I cannot stand it (it’s just not my thing). What makes people love it so much?

so there’s a few things to keep in mind here:

1. there’s a difference between POPULAR and TALKED ABOUT or BUZZY. what you see people discuss online a lot or not isn’t always a reflection of what the majority of people are actually watching, which is harder to measure these days bc streaming platforms hide their numbers, but if you look at places like FlixPatrol, Parrot Analytics, etc, you’ll see certain things that always did well on broadcast, like procedurals and the Simpsons and shit, are still popular across both network and streaming, despite what’s talked about online. sometimes the buzz does intersect, but the venn diagram isn’t always a circle. this is why when people say “why arent people talking about x” or “people talk too much about y” im like well. that’s just what generates engagement online, not necessarily the majority’s opinions or tastes.

2. shows or other pieces of media that encourage sustained conversation in some way will always be buzzy, bc platforms are pushed by engagement, positive or negative. SUCCESSION, much like many other HBO shows like GAME OF THRONES, aired at a time weekly most people in many popular western markets could watch it around the same time and post about it in the same language, Sunday nights, and didn’t drop at all at once so it allowed conversation to snowball and to be sustained. Game of Thrones didn’t have to be good to be popular. It was just on at the same time every week at a good time for most people around the world to watch within a 24 hour period and talk about at once. so it trends or floats to the top and other people see it and check it out. HBO kind of perfected this but doesn’t realize this is one of their strengths, bc David Zaslav is an idiot.

3. A show being well written and made does help! People notice the quality, even subconsciously, and it makes people talk about it more, and ironically word of mouth matters more now than ever bc we have infinite entertainment choices against TV. When something is good, it stands out, especially bc late stage capitalism has ground people with any talent or creativity into dust. BUT the content of the show (or any piece of media) itself also has elements that will ALWAYS make people talk about it online or otherwise, which pushes engagement (and things like GOT and Euphoria did too)

- terrible people we can all hate together

- controversial shit we can fight about

- moments that are shareable (either good dialogue as memes or crazy visuals from action scenes)

- in the case of Succession and GOT, a finite end point to argue over and speculate about. Who will inherit? Who will sit on the Iron Throne?

4. specific to Succession, this is a show about the media, and nobody loves that more than people who work in the media (i would know), who also happen to be the majority of people pushing conversation online and also writing reviews, so that’s what trickles down to regular viewers. as somebody who has been fucked over by millionaires in media many times, watching those bitches fight amongst each other can be satisfying. (Succession isn’t my thing either but I can see why). even if you don’t work in the media, in a time of a widening income inequality gap, watching rich people suffer and be assholes to each other is very fun. it’s why Knives Out is fun. or Real Housewives. or even Game of Thrones (bc half of them were landed gentry).

all that being said, the reason your parents like it may simply be that they knew a lot of people with similar tastes talking about it, checked it out, and it’s a well made show so they got hooked. combination of timing, word of mouth, and quality filmmaking barely ever happens but when it does you get a good show that’s also popular (Abbott Elementary is also a great example. these are exceptions to the rule, where most pieces of media struggle in one or more of these fronts.)

my parents are also HBO drama people since Six Feet Under and the Sopranos and you know what all of that has in common? well written TV about terrible families we can shoot the shit about around the water cooler on Mondays, or on Twitter. because at the end of the day, NOTHING brings people together, even my parents who don’t like each other, or opinionated fuckers online, like hating shitty people together.

I get your point about art styles from tumblr looking sketchy and lazy. I feel the same way but it’s hard to articulate why it bothers me because there’s a million things wrong with it. 1. It’s ugly 2. It’s disrespectful 3. If you’re critical of it, people assume it’s because you’re an “ist” or a phobe.

I often think these tumblr artists want people to look ugly on purpose. I think they’re trying to “redefine beauty.” Which means making black people look like a caricature, women having a lot of body hair and everyone needs to have scars and stretch marks.

What sucks in my eyes is that plenty of over weight people I’ve meet are great at makeup and styling their hair. They portray fat people like slobs and then pretend they are representing fat people well. Course, if you’re 300 pounds and five foot four that’s not good but what’s healthy isn’t my point right now. My point is fat people and/or chubby people are depicted by the tumblr crowd like they’re ugly monsters.

So my main point is gonna be this; Art should be made to express something and/or capture beauty. The intent of these tumblr artists is to portray someone else’s characters through a tumblrified lens, so it feels more like a trend than a legitimate take on a character. No different from when everyone made characters look like pastel goths or wear swag 2013 LMFAO clothes. It feels like a dumb trend that’s existed past its due date.

Sorry my ideas are a bit all over the place here but I’m really trying to understand why the art style bothers me. That being said though, if people wanted to make any character any race or weight it’s something I welcome. Just I wish there was more thought about if what they’re drawing is done well or respectfully.

I like to see twilight sparkle drawn black or at least with dark skin cause it’s just my headcanon but I don’t want to see her drawn like a horrible stereotype like that pinkie pie drawing from a while back.

I wouldn't mind if grotesque art is shown as beauty itself in the context of the strange and horror one can make. Ugly art mixed with comedy too is great to show contrast that strange figures or shapes should terrify us but makes us laugh at how weird and crazy it is. People call that 'Newgrounds' art because of figures such as Egoraptor, Spazkid, and Zach Hadel (one of the creators of Smiling Friends), showing weird expressions or animations that looks so strange out of context by using grotesque art as their main point.

It is really is people thinking they have to take all the faults and flaws as a serious thing. If anybody dares laugh at it like it's a joke or think it is portrayed as shock value, they get labeled as the ist/phobia bullshit. It's strange that people want others to see fat, beauty, stretch marks, and everything that seemed as bad, as a positive thing. But the more they emphasize it, it can be taken to extremes that it turns into a negative. That's the paradox of it. God knows those people hate stuff like BBW or weight gain art because it "fetishizes" those traits. I don't mind strange weird art if the point of it is something like for laughs or horror. There probably can be gross art that still portrays it as oddly sweet. Just that the execution of it by the new gen, doesn't pull off well these days.

ugggh sort of slogging through an artwork right now and I’m getting sooooooo in my head and self conscious about the way I make art

like. idk. i use strong language a lot because im melodramatic bitch, but generally i would consider my overall opinion of my art to be…harsh but fair. I could definitely cut myself some slack, but I’m also not *making shit up* just to hurt myself either. It’s critique that I’d give anyone, albeit harsher since it’s myself and not someone else.

I really think i have a complex because i have a graphic design background and…if you’ve seen my art…you can probably see why I found it very difficult to mesh my illustrations with my designs. Or maybe you can’t because you’re a better designer than me and would know what to do with it lmao. But i was doing that stuff when The Height Of Graphic Design™️ was Swiss typography and minimalism. So I pretty much never made anything that was on trend—aka marketable, which is sort of the entire point of graphic design—and it killed my confidence.

my skills stagnated because i was burnt out and couldn’t make anything, especially since i believed that the only stuff i was good at was literally unusable. And I did try, but it went pretty poorly. Looking back some of this was just imposter syndrome and me being a horrible inner critic. A lot of it looks better to me than it did then when i was making it. But i still see the exact same issues with my illustrative style in that space.

the never-ending complaint i have against my own art is also the thing that makes it good at all: it’s an absolute fucking mess of lines. Don’t get me wrong, i ADORE messy art. I love impressionist painting. I think gesture drawings and sketches are beautiful, and i like making mess art. But goddamn if it doesn’t feel like it’s the only thing i can make.

There’s so much i want to do but I feel extremely limited. I know the answer is that i should just practice and deal with stuff…sucking and looking ugly for a while. But it’s hard to throw all that time into making something that i know is subpar or even just bad.

And it’s just annoying to feel like the reason i can’t do something isn’t a materials or a money or even an inspiration or concept thing. It’s purely a skill issue. I literally just…can’t do it. It reminds me of when i went ice skating the first time and couldn’t make any progress despite my brain knowing what to do. My body couldn’t execute it. And it’s the same thing with this stuff.

I hate having to give up on something, not because i want to or am not enjoying it or don’t have time or anything, but because i simply can’t. I can’t ice skate, and I can’t make beautiful, clean art either, and for weirdly the exact same reason.

There’s also something to be said for the fact that any artist worth their salt regardless of their style can do what i do, really. It’s like i stopped after step 2 of sketching and never finished or learned anything past it lol. Every great artist out there doing great portraits or figure drawings can do gesture, can do sorta messy, etc. But i can’t clean my shit up to save my life lmao

idk this isn’t supposed to be a pity post or fishing. if i didn’t like the art i make i wouldn’t post it, you know? And i didn’t for a long time but i like everything I’ve put on here. I don’t think they’re bad, obviously. But when I see all the stuff I wish I could do…a wistful envy follows.

It’s held up better than its cotemporaries and even cultural icons with similar claims of hard drop off. All with better backings and pedigree behind them.
