#this isn’t a knock on clewis btw

now that i’m rewatching season 2 (specifically 2x10 missed the boat), i understand why people get annoyed with charlotte. in the first half of season 2, she pursues lewis when he’s ostensibly not that interested. she can come off as “needy”. but… her liking a guy isn’t a crime. especially when the guy in question is single, and initially only rejects her because he’s afraid of hurting his ex-girlfriend’s feelings. charlotte’s not trying to “steal cleo’s boyfriend”, either, because cleo broke up with lewis before charlotte ever really entered the equation. (but cleo still feels ownership over lewis even when they’re not together, and that’s a problem).
and others might argue that charlotte’s intruding upon the mermaid secret, so we shouldn’t like her. but she’s intruding inadvertently. as the viewers, we’re supposed to feel uneasy when charlotte asks lewis to take her to mako island, but it’s not like charlotte knows that lewis is trying to keep the mermaid secret. in fact, she simply wants to find the places that her late grandmother sketched in order to feel closer to her. there’s nothing evil about her intentions, even if we know that she’s getting dangerously close to finding out about mermaids.
tl:dr; with the way the show frames charlotte, it’s understandable that she’s an unpopular character. but if you look deeper, her motives aren’t malicious, and they only seem to be malicious because the viewer knows more than she does about the situation at hand.
