sorry for the dramatics yesterday. i hate to come across like im trying to cry for attention or whatever. i just, in that moment, really needed to get it off my chest because i was not thinking rationally, and i try to use talking to people about it directly as like an absolute last resort these days.

it was well after the post and the call to the line that i remembered another method i used to use a while back that used to help me. video journals. so i set my stuff up and i got back to doing those. i did a few of them. and I talked about a lot!!! shit I've never told anyone. shit I haven't allowed myself to think too much about in years... and even though i didn't sleep through the whole night i do feel a bit lighter.

i came to this conclusion like, i can't control my current situation. im up against a battle of the truth vs resentment and ego. im honestly powerless against the latter. but i have to have faith that everything is going to be okay no matter what. that it does indeed get better, despite this feeling like a never ending saga.

there's a reason for everything. im learning a plethora of lessons and as long as i learn from all this, I'll never be here again once i finally get out of this...

i believe it's in reference to the fact that we have a blind spot in our eyes where the optic nerve is

there aren't any light cells there because our light cells point backwards, meaning that the neural wiring sits on top and has to go past them in order to reach the optic nerve, and in this region there can't be any light cells since there's nerves in the way. our brain compensates for this by just filling in the blank with what it thinks should be there. typically, this works just fine, as most people have 2 eyes to help and the nerve is off-set from the fovea (the central region responsible for our sharp central vision). however, you can use an optical illusion like this

where you close one eye, look across at the shape on the opposite side, and move the screen back-and-forth until the other shape disappears. when it does, the brain is filling in the gap with the outside assuming that it's continuous. this is fine biological behaviour, as it works good enough, but not perfect. all vertebrates (i believe? not sure exactly) share a common ancestor from which our eyes come from, so we all have the same construction and flaw

however! there are animals we know of that has the cells pointed outwards!

cephalopods! that includes this guy (cuttlefish), octopi, squids, etc. these guys evolved eyes separately from the rest of us, and in that process their light cells point outwards. this means that these guys don't have any blind spot, as all the neural wiring sits behind the cells and don't need an area without any to go back and bundle

if there was an intelligent designer, they for sure got a fuckin F for this shit, since an good engineer would reuse the better eye design for every animal, not make a second, inferior one and throw that into most animals

I know I don’t owe any of you anything but I still felt compelled to write about my long term absence. And I feel far enough away from the dangerous spot I was in to be able to make this comic. I have a therapist now, and she agreed that making this could be a very cathartic gesture, and the start of properly leaving these thoughts behind me. I am still, at seemingly random times, blindsided by fleeting desires to kill myself. They’re always passing urges, but it’s disarming, and uncomfortable. I worry sometimes that my brain’s spent so long thinking only about suicide that it’s forgotten how to think about anything else. Like, now that I've opened that door for myself, I'll never be able to fully shut it again. But I’m trying my best to encourage my mind in other directions. We'll see how that goes.

I am still donating all proceeds from my store to Palestinian causes. So far, I've donated over $15K, not including donations coming from my own pocket or the fundraising streams which jointly raised around $10K. In the time since I made my initial post about where this money would be going, the focus has shifted from aid organisations to directly donating to escape funds.
