sorry im just so emotional over december '04 and how it builds so much on their first ep. the growing up and shutting yourself off (hello my old heart) then learning to open back up again (trees) to rely on your loved ones (lay me down and cold is the night) of the ep. mirroring the pure openness and trust in their loved ones helping them through dark times. and lyrically it's very similar to cold is the night too with references to bitter cold, "keeping you out of the dark". and it references childhood memories and how those beloved experiences have changed in adulthood like trees. but it's about how the singer DOES stay with their loved ones and has no doubts about shutting themselves off. its a maturation both for the narrator and musically for the oh hellos with the richer, fuller sound. to me this single is without a doubt a spiritual successor to the ep
#i speak#the oh hellos#this is so stream of thought but ive been up for 17 hours on 6 hours sleep and am losing my mind over this song ✌#i had a hunch that i would feel this way just from the teaser and i was right!! even the sound of it. musically. reminds me of a more matur#version of their earlier stuff

He looks peaceful and calm, so different from usual. Jace found himself reaching out, wanting to touch him, but he stopped himself. That would just be strange, uncomfortable.
He wondered where Raz’s family was. Surely, they had been contacted. Hospitals always contact the next of kin. They should be there, crying over his wounds and holding his hand and watching him through the night. Maybe they were on their way.
Jace didn’t know where they lived, if they had moved to the continent when Raz had. He still had a light accent from his homeland, Prokran, so maybe he had come alone. It would take a little time, but surely they would come for him. But Raz had never spoken about his family, had always changed the subject when someone asked about them. He could have been disappointed in them, or them in him. They have been dead. There were a lot of possibilities and Jace had no way of knowing.
If they couldn’t be there, he definitely would.
The nurses came by a few times within the next couple of hours, checking his vitals and IV and looking over his chart. They didn’t even glance at Jace. They were too busy for a visitor. He wanted to ask them what had happened and when Raz would wake up, but he found himself choking on the words and they were always gone before he could spit them out.
The sun was beginning to rise by the time Raz finally woke up. Seconds after he was shivering, and panting, sweat forming on his brow. He didn’t even look at Jace as he gasped and winced, his fingers knotting into the hospital blankets.
Jace grabbed the hand closest to him and squeezed it, although his grip was nowhere near as strong as Raz’s was. It felt like the man was going to break his fingers.
There was a button for calling a doctor and Jace pressed him, trying to soothe Raz’s agony with soft words and light touches as he had with the Vamp before. A doctor finally came, white coat billowing about him, and checking the almost empty IV drip. He quickly replaced it with a new one and as soon as the liquid spread into Raz’s blood stream, he calmed. It must have been morphine or something.
The doctor stayed though and asked a few questions, once again ignoring the fact that Jace was still in the room. Raz answered them as well as he could, but he was very loopy and couldn’t quite get his words out right. Every once in a while a word would slip out that Jace couldn’t understand, an old and very different language. He had never bothered to learn Raz’s original language.
It wasn’t until the doctor left that Raz looked over at him, a weak smile on his lips, “You came for me.”
“Of course I did. I promised, didn’t I?” Jace let go. He had forgotten that he was still holding Raz’s hand.
Raz’s eyes closed and stayed that way for a long while. Jace wasn’t sure if he had fallen back to sleep with the help of the drugs or was merely resting. He didn’t know what he should do, if he should leave or not. But those icy eyes, now red rimmed, opened again and lazy locked onto him.
“Sorry, darling.” Raz adjusted himself to be more comfortable and winced as he did, “Those are the drugs, aren’t they? Making me lose my head. Probably going to crash on you any moment now.”
“Don’t worry about it.” Jace smiled, “I’m just glad you’re alive.”
Jace didn’t know what he would do if Raz hadn’t made it, if something really bad had happened to him. He wouldn’t be able to take care of himself and Terrin wouldn’t be able to keep him together. Raz was the best friend he’d ever had. If he died, Jace would most likely follow.
“What happened?”
“I got to the station, Fen was almost fully awake. The captain took him in and gave him a looking over. Everything seemed to be fine.” Raz explained, his words slow and sluggish. Jace kept his eyes on his mouth as he spoke. His lips were thin, but they were so well shaped. He wondered how they would feel and then pretended that he’d never thought that. “They were mad that we lost the Vamp, but they were understanding. We’d been attacked. A search party would be formed.

A/N: It is a lot and it probably isn’t great and I am sorry.
Black spots dance across hour vision as they fight for control against the bright light. .
Once your vision clears, you frantically move your head in search of some kind of understanding but a sharp pain radiating through your arm and head denies movement. An involuntary pained noise escapes your mouth.
“Y/N! Are you okay? What hurts? What do you need?” a tired yet frenzied voice hurries towards you. You blink in denial at the speaker currently sitting at the edge of your bed.
“Jay? Is that you?” your small voice asks. You raise a shaky hand using the arm that is not currently rendered useless by excruciating pain to his face. You approach slowly afraid that it will disappear under your fingertips. Your fingers brush against the unshaven scruff and you glance into bloodshot yet familiar blue eyes. He covers your hand with his
“In the flesh,” his lip curves in a smile that once proved comforting but now makes the hope building in your chest deflate in dread.
“No,” he looks confused and you shut your eyes warding off the haunting reminder of what you have lost. “Y-you’re dead. You are all dead. It always ends the same.”
Tears spring from your eyes and you feel Jason’s ghost press your hand harder to his face.
“No, Y/N, listen to me. This,” he presses harder, “is real. I’m real. You were injected with the fear toxin.” You shake your head and he sighs in frustration.
“Nick and Trey are here. I am here. We are all here for you. We aren’t going anywhere Doll,” he says the last part softly as your trembling comes to a halt. You open your eyes hesitantly.
You have seen this scene play out a million times. Reassurance in the presence of Jason or Nick or Trey but they all end the same. The personal and cutting accusations begin. “Should have saved me.” “I was just a kid.” “Can’t even save your little brother.” Then they are ripped away from you in a fatal disaster. But none have reassured you that they are actually there with you.
“Is it really you, Jay?” he smiles softly and gently wipes the tears from your eyes.
“Of course Doll. They don’t make them this handsome in whatever toxin Crane has cooked up this week.” You ignore the pain in your shoulder and wrap your arms around him tightly.
He lets out an oof before returning the hug gently careful of your shoulder. You bury your head in his chest and he strokes your hair. Your shoulder starts to ache and you hiss in pain.
“Alright Dopey you should probably get some rest.” Jason says and you sit back on the pillow. You finally notice the IV in your arm. Your eyes follow it until you catch sight of your bandaged shoulder barely concealed by the thin hospital gown.
“Was I shot?” you ask incredulously. You take in your surroundings and take note of the familiarity of the hospital room as well as the ‘Get Well’ balloons and flowers littering the endtable.
“Yes,” Jason says clenching his teeth. You hitch up an eyebrow and gently touch the bandage.
“Wow, that is badass,” you whisper and Jason laughs.
“You won’t say that once the painkillers stop working,” he says.
“Wait, this is how it feels with painkillers?” you grimace feeling slight anxiety over
Nick appears in the doorway and you grin widely. His face looks aged from stress but brightens when he sees you awake. He makes his way towards you with a slight limp.
You grab him with your good arm and place your cheek on his head. Your eyes grow watery at the feeling of Nick safe in your arms. It takes a good mental shake not to have inhibitions and actually believe in him standing in front of you. Jason tenderly grabs your other hand and strokes your thumb comfortingly seemingly always in tune with your emotions.
“I am so glad you are okay Nicky,” you whisper holding your little brother close.
“I am so sorry Y/N,” You feel tears fall into your hair from his face and you squeeze him tighter.
“There is nothing to apologize for, Nicky. This wasn’t your fault.” you say and he pulls back. Guilt creeps into his watery eyes as he looks down at your shoulder.
“I-I chose you. I was just so scared,” His lip trembles as he looks down. You open your mouth to say something but Jason’s hard look towards Nick stops you. Obviously, that is new information for everyone.
You rub your suddenly tired eyes and sigh. “No, Nick. That was the right thing to do.”
“No, Y/N. Are you kidding me?” Jason pipes in, no longer willing to watch you comfort your brother who has on numerous occasions put you in danger. He stands up and looks at Nick furiously.
“Jay, please-” you plead, not needing this argument right now.
“You almost killed your sister, again, and now she has to be the one comforting you? Are you noticing the pattern or must I enlighten you?” Jason ignores you. Nick stands up and looks at Jason with a red face.
“You are the one who put her in danger by entering her life!” Nick yells and this takes you and Jason by surprise.
“Now, would you two shut up? No one here is at fault!” You yell weakly and Jason looks towards you apologetically. But Nick obviously isn’t done with this argument.
“It didn’t occur to you that dating the Red Hood was dangerous?” Nick’s reveal rings heavy through the room. Jason’s mouth falls open.
“Nick, how?” you ask completely shocked.
“It isn’t rocket science, Y/N! Once you started getting caught in this mess the pieces fell together. I just couldn’t believe you would ever settle for the asshole who betrayed Sionis.”
Your eyes widen, “Betray?” Your voice cracks and Nick winces at his slip-up.
“Y/N, wait, no. It isn’t like that. You didn’t honestly think they would let me out that easily, did you? I had to give him something or-or… and I didn’t know he would hurt you. I just thought he wanted him,” Nick is suddenly slammed against the wall. An infuriated Jason has his fists curled on Nick’s jacket as he pins him.
“I know you did not fucking give me up,” Jason says between gritted teeth.
“Not you,” Nick chokes out and looks your way. Shit.
“Jason! Don’t!” you scream trying to get out of your bed. You rip out your I.V. as Jason puts up his fist. He slams it down and you wince at the crunch. Slowly you open your eyes to see Jason’s hand bloodied and a hole next to Nick’s head. Nick’s terrified eyes match Jason’s enraged.
“Jay,” You whisper and try standing up but fall to your knees. Jason drops Nick and rushes over to you.
“Y/N, I’m-” he starts but you shake your head with tears streaming down your face.
“Please, just go,” you whisper and he scrunches his eyebrows in confusion.
“Go? Y/N, I’m not- what?” he asks completely baffled.
“Just go. My family doesn’t need this,” you say having a hard time looking into his pained eyes.
He stands up and gives a scoff. “Your family, huh,” he shakes his head, “And you? What do you need, Y/N?”
His tired eyes bore into yours searching for answers you know you can’t admit.
“Just go, please,” you whisper and his nostrils flare. He clenches his bloody fist and looks at Nick coldly.
“If anything happens to her, you will regret it.” he says coolly and strides out of the room. You clutch at your pounding head and pinch your arm in a desperate attempt at waking up from this toxin-induced dream.
But you open your eyes to a very real Nick looking at you with very real regret etched into his face.
“Y/N, I’m so sorry,” he says softly and you just shake your head.
“Me too Nick. Me too.”
Today marks the end of your first full week back at work. Your arm still lays useless in a sling even though it has been a few weeks since you’ve left the hospital. Which has proved to be a total pain in the ass as you try to juggle Bruce’s folders in one hand and your book bag falling from your uninjured shoulder. You breathe out a sigh of relief as Wayne Enterprises finally comes into view.
The anxiety of seeing Jason has dissipated as the week has gone with no appearance. You know it is for the best but you can’t shake the secret desire for a call or him showing up or any communication. Inadvertently, you find yourself attuned to anything remotely related to him. Your eyes remain unrelentlng in watching news reports on the day the vigilantes are currently saving. Every motorcycle you pass you wait for the driver to take off their helmet and reveal sharp blue eyes and white streaked hair. But before you get too caught up in the idea of seeing Jay again you think of Nick..
Ever since the attack Nick has been a groveling disaster. Nick had let the canary sing once you returned home from the hospital. He had tried to quit and the attack on him was real. It was only with a promise of information regarding the Red Hood that he was left alive. He had remembered Red Hood from driving him and Mask. Along with these memories he noticed how the vigilante took great care in getting you to the hospital and then Jason miraculously was there by your bedside. The night you were to give information to Mask was all a ruse. Instead of giving the entire batfamily identies away he decided to share that you were friends with Red Hood. When Jason had literally taken out every goon and blown his own cover the second you were in danger it was a confirmation. The plan was then to use you as bait. Mask promised he wouldn’t hurt you and Trey. This is easy to believe because there was no falsehood in the terror in Nick’s eyes the moment he realized he was being forced to choose between you and Trey. You sat through this conversation expressionless and Nick had looked desperately for a reaction. Without a word, you left him sitting alone at the kit hen table.
Your anger and desperation has led to continuous sleepless nights charged with coffee as you engrossed yourself in research and punching out an article. Mask is obviously fueled by vendettas. Scarecrow was less easily figured out but through extensive research into the attacks and interrogations of Wayne employees, you connected the dots. Scarecrow is using Wayne tech and employees to create deadlier weapons. And from intimidation and promises of keeping them safe from Mask he earns the cooperation of these Wayne employees. Your book bag currently holds key evidence and testimonies to take these bastards down. But knowing enough about the corruption of the police force you decide to do this Lois Lane style.
“Oh, I am so sorry,” you say bumping into a woman. Your folders drop to the ground and you scurry to pick them up.
The woman bends down and hands you the folders.
“Thank you,” you look up and start at the most piercing green eyes staring back at you. She flips her ridiculously long red hair over her shoulder and flashes a smile that would melt any cold heart.
“The least I can do! I bumped into you!” she chirps and you smile hesitantly.
“Kori, where did you- oh hey Y/N!” you hear a familiar voice. You look up to see none other than Dick Grayson clad in his police uniform walking out of Wayne Enterprises.
“This is Y/N?” Kori asks excitedly. Suddenly, you are engulfed in a hug that puts Dick’s to shame.
You laugh nervously and tuck your hair behind you ear once she pulls away.
“Oh, how rude! I am Kori. Dick’s lover.” she says and Dick clears his throat.
“Oh, sorry, his girlfriend.” she says correcting herself. Dick smiles warmly at her, clearly attuned to her naïvety..
“It is so nice to finally meet you! Dick and Jay have told me so much about you! You are a brave woman, Y/N.”
Your face grows hot. “Thank you.” Her face grows serious and she leans in close.
“You really must go see Jason. He is quite the mess.” she says and you avoid her concerned eyes.
“She has a point.” Dick says. Great, the Hottest Couple of the Year is cornering you.
“Uh, I don’t think he really wants to see me right now.” Your heart sinks to think you are causing Jay any pain.
“Nonsense! We could take you to him!” Kori says and you aggressively shake your head no.
“Oh, no. Thank you but I think that’s a bad idea. Plus I have work and stuff to do,” You sputter.
“Well luckily we happen to know your boss,” she giggles and you find yourself warming up quickly to her. “You guys can talk and honestly what is the worst thing that could happen?”
“Thanks, but I really do have a lot to do,” you say apologetically. Kori nods her head in understanding and gives a reassuring smile.
“Of course, we don’t want to pressure you,” she says.
“Well, it was really nice meeting you. And seeing you Dick,” you say smiling softly. After saying goodbye, you make your way inside towards the elevators.
Once inside the elevator, you clutch your folder close to your chest and squeeze your eyes shut. You knew you were hurting him when you asked him to leave. And every fiber of your being screamed at you to stop but you couldn’t risk losing your brother. Especially now when he needed you the most. He has made so many mistakes, admittedly a heaping mass of them. But you know deep down he is trying to protect himself and his family. Not exactly obvious but you know your brother well enough and he is not innately selfish. Intentions are good but execution not to so much. And more than anything you wanted the lying and distrust between the two of you to stop. You want your little brother back. You want your nephew back. With Jason around, more like Jason’s tendency to hit what is making him angry, you know it will make Nick uneasy and even more reluctant to divulge anything to you. Your brother is not exactly known for being one who learns from his mistakes. And Jason is not known for controlling his temper.
The rest of the shift goes without any more chance encounters. You had gotten your work done several hours earlier but decided to work on your article and cross-reference sources leaving you sitting at your desk way past your assigned shift. It isn’t until a janitor comes by mopping the floor that it occurs to you to probably head home. Wiping the exhaustion from your eyes, you pack up your stuff and say a farewell to the custodian.
You glance at your phone walking out of the building and wince at the very late hour. You shoot a quick text letting Nick know you will be home soon but being all-to-aware of your brother he is probably passed out as of hours ago.
The lack of sleep and come down from the excessive amounts of caffeine pounds at your head while your shoulder is demanding attention by intensifying its own pain. You stop on a sidewalk and open up your backpack for painkillers. You swallow a few and shake your head trying to reduce some of the fogginess in your brain. This is when it occurs to you that you do not recognize any of your surroundings.
You spin in a circle searching for any familiarity but feel the panic when you come up empty. You must have taken a wrong turn but was too damn out of it to realize. You mentally slap yourself. And you are always so damn careful. Gotham is a dangerous place during the day but nighttime seems to be when it hits its peak especially in designated areas. You punch Nick’s contact and nervously look around at the empty streets as the phone rings.
“Come on, Nickie. Pick up the phone,” you whisper anxiously tapping your foot. His voicemail pops through the phone and you send many curses in neat packages his way. Your finger hovers over Jason’s name.
Pros and cons. Pro; you might survive the trip. Con; Jason currently hates your guts. Pro; You miss him. Con; you really don’t want to see him.
“Ahh, fuck it,” you say and hit his number. You hold your breath at each pause between the rings half-hoping and half-dreading his deep voice answering. You let out a sigh concocted of both relief and frustration when he doesn’t answer.
You don’t have the money for a cab so without any other option you decide to walk. You’ve made it this far, right?
Following crappy walking directions courtesy of you phone you start to make your way down unfamiliar streets. It leads you to an alleyway and you merely glance at it shaking your head.
“Nope, nope. Too many movies,” you say and feel smug as you avoid it only to come crashing into someone. You look up into a yellow grin and the worn features of a man much much larger thant you. You back up mumbling an apology.
“What’s wrong girl? You lost?” he asks with a gravelly voice. You swallow and shift the bookbag on your good arm. Too bad none of Jason’s lessons covered what to do with one shot arm and about 25% coherence.
“Um, no, I am fine. Thank you,” you say and mentally scold yourself. Are you trying to kill him with kindness?
You start backing up towards the alleyway you had previously condemned but suddenly looked more appealing. You see lights on in one building with lights on but in order to get it you would have to pass scary man. He stares at you with the same wide grin but you turn away and begin walking very briskly. Your phone begins buzzing in your hand scaring the absolute shit out of you. You look at it and see Jason’s name. You answer it hastily.
“Start talking about how you are just around the corner and how you will see me in a few seconds.” he says.
“What? What the hell are you talking about?” you answer panicked and turn around to see the man following you. When you turn back around you stop dead in your tracks as another man appears in front of you.
“Shit, I will be right down,” he hangs up and you stare nervously at the other man now approaching you. Suddenly, your bag is ripped off your arm with such force you fall on your shoulder smack into a puddle. You bite your lip stifling a yell of pain.
“I wouldn’t get between her and her homework. Major nerd,” a robotic voice makes his appearance next to Stalker #1. He grabs your bag and lands a sickening punch to the man’s jaw. Jay’s victim falls with a thud to the ground and he tosses you the bag. It lands in the puddle and you shoot a glare at him. He shrugs, feigning innocence.
“Step any closer and I shoot, Hood.” the other man holds a shaky gun pointed in Jason’s direction. You slink back with your backpack so that you aren’t between the two. This man is obviously not Mr. Crime Lord evident from his wide eyes and unsure grip around the gun.
“Oh, gosh. Please don’t Mister.” Jason says mockingly and you roll your eyes.
“A child,” you say under your breath.
The man pulls the trigger and you recoil at the loud bang. The bullet misses Jason by several inches and you can only imagine the smirk growing behind the helmet.
“I asked nicely,” he pulls out the pistol at his side and with lightning speed has the man lying on the ground. You stare openly gaping at the unmoving figure.
“Did you just kill that man?” you ask incredulously.
“Relax. It’s a tranquilizer,” he says waving the pistol. You look at the fallen man skeptically and Jason sighs. He roughly grabs the man and holds him up for your pleasure.
“Look, breathing. Per Batman’s request,” he states and tosses the man back down. You breathe a sigh of relief and stand up not without struggle. Your bandage lays flopping on your arm completely soaked and exposing the harsh wound. And the pain. Oh the pain.
“That looks awful.” You give him a sharp look and he takes in your full appearance. His eyes are immediately drawn to the dark circles falling from your own and the decrease of color in your face. “You look awful.”
You let out a cynical laugh.
“Gee thanks Jay. I am glad to see you haven’t lost any of your charm there lover boy,” you quip and sling the bag over your good shoulder. Pain flashes across your face.
“Shit, fine.” Jay says and grabs the bag from you.
“Hey!” you protest but make a weak attempt at retrieving it.
“I can patch you up. My place isn’t far from here,” he says walking past you.
“Jason, no. I should really just get home.” He turns on his heels and stares at you.
“Y/N, just follow me and please for once don’t fight me on this.”
You narrow your eyes and cross your arms. He sling the bag over his back.
“Listen, I have better things to be doing, believe me. So the sooner the better,” he gestures in front of him with a sweeping arc of his arms. You recoil at the bitterness barely disguised in his robotic voice and sigh in defeat as you walk towards him.
“And I am the child,” he grumbles.
“Oh good one Jay.”
“I’d appreciate it if you didn’t blow my cover tonight, maybe,” he snaps.
“No sane person is out here at this hour.”
“Got that right.”
The rest of the walk goes very similarly Frustration building itself over the past few weeks channels its way into petty bantering.
You finally stop in an alleyway behind the Gotham Police Station. Jason looks around before hitting the brick wall exposing a keypad. He punches in a code and a door reveals itself. You stare wide-eyed. Does he live underneath the police station? He steps and gestures for you to follow.
“Um, Jay, my apartment isn’t exactly bourgeoisie but it has to be better than a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles hideout.”
“Oh would you shut up and get your ass in here,” he whispers angrily. You walk in next to him and jump when the door shuts behind you two. Lights come on above and through computer screens illuminating a mini Batcave.
Jason strides towards a table taking his helmet off. He peels off his domino mask and lays them both down on the counter.
He turns around and your breath hitches. His hair is matted from sweat but the unmistakable messiness and white streak cause a flutter in your stomach. And the eyes you missed so achingly bad now stare back at you.
“Earth to Y/N?”
“Huh? What?” you ask flustered. He cracks his grin and your stomach does an entire acrobatic routine.
“Would you stop checking me out and come sit in this chair so I can bandage you up.”
“I wasn’t- I was,” he grows more amused at your rambling, “You are so freaking infuriating.”
You stomp over to the chair and plop yourself down almost immediately regretting the extra movement when your shoulder hits you with another round. You roll up your sleeve to present the wound.
“This is going to sting like hell,” he warns watching your face carefully. You bite your lip and nod your head confidently. He stifles back a grin at your behavior and starts cleaning your wound.
“Ow damn you stupid ass motherfucker son of a bitch….” you manage to scream every profanity at him as what feels like torture is inflicted upon your arm. He stares at you with wide eyes.
“Damn Y/N leave the dirty talk for bedtime.” he winks and you seethe.
He finally manages to dress your wound with only a few attempted murders and minimum verbal abuse.
“There, you’re all set.” His eyes meet yours and cloud over before he turns away clearing his throat.
“Jay, look. I am really sorry.” you say sighing and place a hand on his shoulder. His muscles stiffen beneath your touch and he remains silent, afraid he will give away his own turmoil of emotions at seeing you again.
“Alright, I will go. Thank you for saving me, again.” you say and stand up to make your exit. As you walk past him, he grabs your uninjured arm lightly.
“You’ve been having the nightmares haven’t you?” he whispers softly and lets go of your arm. Tears threaten your eyes but you push them far back. The answer is yes Jay. Every night is a reminder of the hell the toxin put you through.
“No, I don’t know what you are talking about,” you shove your hand into your pocket and look down; a clear indication you are lying.
“Y/N, why did you push me away? I could help you!” he asks angrily. You look at him defensively.
“And attack my brother while you are at it?” you yell. He clenches his fist and stands up to walk away from you. Maybe a bit too far but you can’t help but release your sleep depraved frustration onto him. “Remember when you said you wouldn’t get between me and my responsibilities? I thought not attacking them was implied in that but supposedly we had mixed signals there.” He clenches his fist over a towel and turns back
“I shouldn’t have done that and I am sorry. But Y/N have you ever considered that you are neglecting the most important responsibility?” he accuses pointing the towel at you. “A responsibility to yourself.”
You purse your lips in anger.
“I-I” you try but he interrupts you.
“No, Y/N, I’m sick and tired of seeing you driven over until you are so spread out there is nothing left.” He walks dangerously close. “And then God forbid I point it out and you push me away for HIM! Just do something for yourself, damn it! Not for Nick, not for Trey, not for me, or work or school. Do it for you.”
You look into his heated gaze and can feel his hot breaths on your face.
“You want me to do something for myself?” you whisper and he nods exasperated. You close the small gap between you so that your chest is touching his abdomen. Flames dance in his eyes but you recognize this as lust over anger. You give him a playful grin and then shove him hard. You are completely taking him by surprise so he stumbles back a few steps. He fixes a surprised and anger filled look on you.
“That is for threatening my brother,” you say strolling up to him and he rolls his eyes. Perhaps it’s the lack of sleep or painkillers but you stop fighting the nagging part of you that wants him. He opens his mouth to scold more when you grab his face and cover his mouth with your own. You break away but hold his face inches from yours..
“And this is for me,” you whisper softly.
“Doll, you piss me off more than anyone I know,” He growls and kisses you harder. Your fingers tangle in each other’s hair and he lifts you up so that your legs wrap around his waist. The reasons for being separated for weeks completely fly out the window as he sets you down on one of the tables. You giggle holding his face close to yours as you hear several tools clatter to the ground.
“Damn I missed you,” he says with a smirk and captures your mouth again.

PROLOG
MARGOT
Tears overflow my cheeks and from my vanquished eyes a sudden shower falls.[1] The drops form a trickle, a flow, a torrent. Forty days and forty nights of continuous and universal rain.[2] Waves are in excess, everything runs to the sea. [3] No possible action of any flood could thus have modelled the land, either within the valley or along the open coast.[4] A flood that leaves everything in a state of confusion[5] forming a great briny mass searching for direction. The sea by its motion, detaches from its bottom an infinity of plants, shells, slime, and sand, which the waves and winds continually drive towards the shore. [6] There is a stone in the sea called the oyster. A stray grain of sand finding its way into its shells is enough to spark a new beginning. The Oyster comes out of the sea early in the morning ahead of the light, and, opening its shell, it swallows the heavenly dew and the rays of the sun and moon and the light from the stars above. And thus is born the pearl, I am born, from the most high celestial bodies.[7]
LENNY
(Thrusting the flat knife between the two shells) I keep praying for You to make something happen so why this awful, crawling feeling that nothing ever does?[8] (he turns the knife forcefully) God does not shout. God does not whisper. God does not write. God does not hear. God does not chat. God's infinite silence…[9] (the two shells crack open and he draws out the knife) The oysters valves are standing open and a pearl lays between them, a wonderful sight and notable, for no pearl in all history could be compared with it at all, either in size or in beauty.[10] But her beauty does not lie in the perfection of the sphere, nor in symmetry. She is irregular, ovoid, curved and lumpy. One moment it did not exist, the next moment it was full blown in my mind, as though it had been there all the time and needed only the bursting of a soap bubble veil to show it.[11] All this time I sought for truth and unity and now all that matters is her proud glow that strives for contradiction and multiplicity.
ACT I
EXT. GARDEN - DAWN - ABOUT BEES AND HONEY
LENNY arrives at the WITTGENSTEIN HOUSE. Here is the garden and around it some flower beds, a space cultivated for flowers for Margot, to make a spray for her hair, to perfume the sheets.[12] Naturally, […] only the apple tree interests him, tempts him: he can see its flowers.[13] He walks towards the tree. The WITTGENSTEIN HOUSE is observing him. As LENNY reaches for one of the blossoms a bee flies out of it.
WITTGENSTEIN HOUSE
Once on a June evening, in those long gone years when the ends of days sank into silence, I was waiting for a total eclipse of the sun on a terrace facing a garden, overlooking the foliage of a maple tree.[14] And I thought of you Lenny. In the sudden darkness I saw you, hidden behind a veil, the massive walls of the Vatican Palace. A faceless silhouette.
LENNY
It’s all different now she has revealed herself only for a short moment but I saw my reflection in her pearlescent luster: functioning, utilising, thinking in causes and effects, logically evaluating and analyzing. But what if I want to walk for hours and weeks without a destination. What if I want to know what the month of march brings for an Aquarius. What if I want to miss her for no better reason than that I love to be fucking emotional.
WITTGENSTEIN HOUSE (hesistates)
When i watched the total eclipse of the sun that summer evening it soon became dark and an eclipse wind, like a wave, had risen when suddenly from the neighbouring house burst forth a sort of wild dance, with the strange, biting, astringent sound of Pan’s pipes. Young people were celebrating some festival, they had confused shadow with twilight and were playing as night fell. However much one knows about it, the veiling of the sun’s light is disturbing and transports one to another world. [15] I saw you cover up in darkness and now i see you longing for the sun. This is a complete inversion. And in this twilight a party shall rise so that the heart, that obscure, celestial flower, undergoes a mysterious blossoming.[16] That is the only way great loves stories are born and I don't want any more part time believers.[17]
LENNY
But how can i find Margot in this city still so strange to me?
WITTGENSTEIN HOUSE
She’s the bee and you are her honey. What does Margot like?
LENNY (looking at the flowers)
Margot likes wind in her hair and salt crystals on her skin, lace and hoodies, rings on her fingers and flowers in her hair, black panthers and partridges, walking barefoot on wet grass and wearing mid calf boots, day dreaming and ADHD, dancing underground and sleeping in white sheets, Los Angeles and Palermo, birch trees and skyscrapers, gel nails and knitting, equal rights and mini skirts, cabrios and umbrella pine trees, Fellinis Roma and Mario Cart, seashells and pinecones, Zorra by Bad Gyal and playing the Bach Suite Nr. 1 on her Cello, passion fruits and rough fights, oranges and jeweled persian rice, fig trees and Coke, dry white wine and soft cheese, creaky parquet and soft carpets, ....
WITTGENSTEIN HOUSE
The mask does not hide the face, it is the face.[18] Your new face should combine all these elements to a story and make a lot of noise.[19] [...] the veil of mystery you profess to hang before their eyes, serve but to stimulate their curiosity[20]. In being everywhere and nowhere [...] the object of much social curiosity[21] People will pay attention to it, speak about it, remember it. You’ll be EROS and I will be the embodiment of your story the place where all elements manifest in a happening. A great feast all the Margots will want to attend.
ACT III - THE INVITATION
INT. MARGOTS MURCIELAGO - AFTERNOON
A downpour of summer rain patters on the front window. MARGOT is waiting at a red light. Her phone buzzes and she opens the message.
@ YUNGPAPA:
“My darling friends, there’s one spectacular party in the making! Join us tonight at the Wittgenstein House to another glass of wine under fig trees, eating fresh fish on soft carpets next to blossoming anthuries. Glowing cheeks from dancing till dawn. Bring a delicate, floating, spring bouquet of florets in new leaf green, cherry blossom pink, and marigold yellow[22] and we’ll serve everything else. XOXO”
ACT IV - THE PARTY
EXT. THE CITY - SUNSET
THE HOUSE WANTS TO BE KNOWN
The rain had stopped. The water evaporated on the hot asphalt and left a sultry summer evening air. AVAs cabrio is speeding down the Ringstrasse with its roof folded down.
AVA (lost in thought)
Do you think YUNG PAPA will attend the party today? I wish we’d find out who’s behind all this uproar.
MARGOT
Some weeks ago we’ve never heard about him and now he's everywhere. Noise, ruckus, rumors spread.[27] I’ve heard the parties are supposed to be unique in its kind and his face, enveloped by a more or less dense veil[26] has sparked many suspicions. I think he looks like Hauru, wearing drop earrings made of rubies and emeralds combined dripping down[27] his lobe, his blonde chin length hair making him the cynosure of all eyes.[27]
EXT. THE SITE - SUNSET
THE HOUSE WANTS TO BE SEEN
The garden is enlightened by the colourful lights emerging the windows. The WITTGENSTEIN HOUSE is radiant and reaching in all directions, emitting visual, audible and perceptible vibrations. The air is full of petals twinkling through the air giving off a smell of orange blossoms. A car enters the SITE. AVA and MARGOT step out of it. Instantly they are surrounded by an electric atmosphere. On inspecting the entrance facade, you can discover a series of metaphors and symbolic signs.[29] It would be too strong to call this fantasy a portal to Hell, but it is surely no entrance to a Heavenly Jerusalem[30]. AVA and MARGOT join the stream of guests walking through the garden towards the WITTGENSTEIN HOUSE greeting, kissing, hugging.
INT. THE ENTRANCE - SUNSET
THE HOUSE WANTS TO FLIRT
The party begins as people are moving in, gathering in the entrance hall and taking a stand up cocktail.[31] There is champagne, caviar and fireworks.[32] Ahead, some distance from the entrance, is a great mural of brilliant color.[33] Opulent Ornaments, heavy textiles, reflecting surfaces.
WITTGENSTEIN HOUSE (whispering to the Lenny)
First impressions are made. About me as the entrance always affects the impression of the whole house. And especially Margots first impression of you. Is she here?
LENNY
I see her in the hundreds of eccentric bouquets that the guests have brought along overflowing the room. I see her in that mans excessively long fingernails or and your lining flickers with golden mosaics and indirect lighting from above.
WITTGENSTEIN HOUSE
Yes you are right. I’m discovering my dramatic side. I want to dance, twist my elements, feel the motion and sensuality. I flirt and wink at the guests with my dizzying array of rich surface treatments.
MARGOT
Ava! Look at this man sitting on the seashell sofa in the garden. He’s knitting all alone while everybody else is clinking glasses.
AVA (teasing)
Why don’t you bring him a glass of wine. I know it, I feel it, and you will say it.[35]
MARGOT (concentrated)
You just know me too well and yes, he is cute.
EXT. THE GARDEN - SUNSET
THE HOUSE WANTS DRAMA
MARGOT walks over to the LENNY. Rising up in a warm haze, the innumerable modern statues towered on their pillars half way up the golden webs of sunset.[36] The garden is a collection of living beauties, rare plants, exotic flowers and fruits. The trees are old and high. Long white cotton cloths are blowing in the wind, rendering shadow plays. LENNY is sitting in the seashell sofa sheltered from the wind, warm sunbeams begin to play. [37] MARGOT hands him the glass.
MARGOT (laughing)
Hello strange man, what are you knitting?
LENNY
Some of the more exotic plants have to be taken indoors for protection from the cold night air and swaddled in thick woollen garments.[38]
MARGOT We have, indeed, become a flower growing people.[39] You seem pretty passionate about your plants. I like it when people care. About anything actually.
LENNY
When, on a summer evening, the melodious sky growls like a tawny lion, and everyone is complaining of the storm, it is the memory of the Meseglise way that makes me stand alone in ecstasy, inhaling, through the noise of the falling rain, the lingering scent of invisible lilacs.[41] Or when I reach out to touch a fragile tree and blossoming spicules float downwards and fade, each with its clear, tiny tinkle.[42] These are the moments I cherish most and that’s why I care.
MARGOT (hesistating)
But for me love is not only loving and caring. I don’t want my house to be all light and soft. It starts getting fun when you have contrasts, contradictions and drama. It can be raucous, low, full, pleading, vulgar, sharp, cutting, jovial, harmonious, commanding, harrowing, seductive, explosive or irritated[...] noble, high pitched, servile, majestic, ample, sick, affronted, clothed in silence, echoing with the sea or forest, undercut by the twittering of birds, howling like a wild beast, [... ]asking questions and saying come here. [43]
LENNY
Until now I’v only got to know a more one-sided monotonous love but thats another story.
MARGOT (excited)
Oh look over there! A black panther is prowling through the peach trees!
INT. SALON - NIGHT
THE HOUSE WANTS TO BE DIRTY
Food is being served in the salon. The huge chandeliers had dimmed spread a diffused multi coloured light from the tiny nucleo bulbs that bespangle the vaulted ceiling [44] The materials in which the WITTGENSTEIN HOUSE presents itself come from the everyday domestic sphere, much having to do with ornamenting the body: copper and brass wire, buttons, beads, baubles, hooks, eyes, straps, false fingernails, makeup, hair, ribbons, lace, thread, shells, feathers, and bones. The amulets are fetishes, beautiful ornamental objects, and they are connected to the fetishism of architectural representation.[34] Billows of smoke of several hookahs hang in the air. People sit on couches of brocaded silk, leaning on a cushions[45]. Chattering and cricket chirping fill the air.
INT. LIVING ROOM - NIGHT
THE HOUSE WANTS TO DANCE
After eating the WITTGENSTEIN HOUSE starts playing Promiscuous Girl by Nelly Furtado. Slowly the room is filled with curiously dancing people. Tossing their hands in a wanton and lascivious manner. One man imitates the movements of a kangaroo grazing in the woods, whilst a second crawled up, and pretended to spear him.[46] LENNY and THE WITTGENSTEIN HOUSE feel MARGOT penetrating them and start dancing along.

LENNY
I am a moving, active body, expressing in exertion, movement, gesture and dance, rather than in sensibility alone.[51] I’ve learned to swim in this flood of confusion. Camelot: I Know It Sounds a Bit Bizarre
My inventory fills up as I continue with Camelot.
Since my first year of blogging, when I forced myself to win Wizardry while adhering to its implementation of permadeath, I’ve often remarked that I would never do that again. My adherence to “playing the way the developers intended” was so strict that during the remainder of the year, I quit Wizardry II, III, and IV rather than even consider backing up the save files. (I would later return to II and III and win both under more relaxed rules.) These days, I am likely to try to abide by both the developer’s original intent and my own “conduct” (limited saves), but I feel that showing and documenting the endgame are more important than questions of integrity.
Thus, there’s a certain exhilaration to the occasional PLATO game, where cheating isn’t even an option. (At least, not in most forms, though see below for a slightly unusual version.) When my character dies, I frequently have a moment of disbelief, almost like people who experience sudden tragedies report having in real life. A couple years ago, I happened to speak to a woman whose husband had fallen asleep while driving home from work and had run head-on into a truck. “I remember thinking he was just here,” she told me. “How could such a simple mistake be so irrevocable? How could there be no rewind button? No do-over?” That’s how I feel when my elf fighter gets killed by a demon. I mean, maybe not exactly, but there are analogues.
The point is, life is precious in the real world and in Camelot, so it becomes all that more meaningful when you succeed. And while death may be a constant danger in the game, it’s not at all arbitrary. When it happens to me, it’s almost always because I’ve bitten off more than I can chew. The game is actually quite good about offering multiple ways out of a situation, about not requiring you to engage enemies that you don’t want to engage. You have to be quick with your fingers, but it would be theoretically possible to explore an entire dungeon level, and collect a good percentage of its treasure, without engaging in a single combat round.
The problem is that once you decide to stand and fight, the game can be relentless. For instance, last night I wandered into a room and faced “6 imps.” I had faced imps before. They’re a demon type, but not very hard, and I was a relatively high level. Generally, when facing stacks of multiple enemies, you concentrate on killing one. Once you do, you escape the room, pray for healing, re-enter, and try to kill the next one. If you must, you can return to the town if your prayers run out.
What I didn’t know was that the 6 creatures weren’t actually imps; they were manes. That’s a tougher demon. It turns out that this game goes one better than Oubliette, which often gave you the category of monster but not the specific monster. In Camelot, the character can mis-identify the specific monster. When I hit (F)ight, I watched myself do 60% damage to one creature and then watched as the demons took their turn and pounded my health from 100% to 40% in one round. There’s no way to escape or to do anything in the middle of a combat round; that’s the point of no return. At that point, I should have immediately fled, or prayed in combat, or done anything but attack a second time, because clearly the enemies were capable of doing more than 50% damage in a single round, and I was now below 50%. But some primitive part of my mind, trained on other RPGs, forgetting temporarily that actions are irrevocable, decided that I didn’t want to waste the 60% damage I’d already achieved, and to at least try to kill one of the demons before I escaped. I hit (F)ight again, missed, and was swiftly torn apart.
Another death.
As I mentioned last time, there’s a good chance of resurrection, and Chester was resurrected. He’s been resurrected a few times now. But each one comes with a loss of score, the higher the level the higher the loss, and Chester now has a score of over -99,999. Fortunately, it caps there. Joshua Tabin (the author) insists that I’ll recover those points at higher levels, but I’m not sure he’s considering the possibility that I’ll die a few more times at those higher levels, too.
I guess Joshua felt a little bad about the game’s difficulty as I reported it in the first entry (though, as he points out, it’s only difficult if you approach it as a typical RPG instead of as Camelot specifically). Joshua and his Level 17 ogre, Drek McFeffer, joined me for a while last night on the first two levels. He ran ahead of me in the dungeon, decimating some of the rooms and alerting me where I could find lucrative treasure caches. One room on each dungeon level is designated the “stud room” and features better treasure and harder monsters than anywhere else on the same level. He helped me clear Level 1’s stud room a couple of times so I could bulk up my equipment. He also used his admin powers to insert a couple of useful items into the town’s store, and all the while he kept a steady stream of hints and tips going with the game’s chat feature. I still died twice, lest you think he made it too easy.
The author throws me some hints as I map the dungeon.
I can’t speak for the mid-game or late-game, but finding useful equipment in the early game is a joy. You have numerous equipment slots, and almost anything you find during the first 10 hours is an upgrade. I was more than three hours into the game before I even had a weapon, so finding my first short sword and then a steel sword was like hitting the real-life lottery. When I found a mithril helmet in one of the stud rooms, I had to stop myself from calling my mother with the good news. Later, it was destroyed because of a cursed item, and the pain was palpable.
Camelot does some clever things with its inventory, too. There are useful items like Palantirs, which tell you where you can find quest enemies (those you have to kill to level up), and Scrolls of Recall to whisk you back to town. The Scroll of Identify does what it suggests, but it can also be used to identify traps before you open chests, and items before you pick them up. The latter use is particularly important because some items are cursed, and in this game, cursed items break the items of the same type that you already have before replacing them. It’s a particular joy to find manuals, which increase your attributes permanently, but potions that increase them temporarily (they last a long time) are almost as good.
There are several items that let you briefly charm a monster companion. The Orb of Entrapment, for instance, seems to work on dragon types. Having one of those at your side really helps clear out a room.
A charmed firedrake follows me around.
I also like how character development is palpable. At some point, you get two attacks per round, which makes you feel like Hercules on the first level. (Although, as I learned more than once, you still can’t get cocky.) Attack and defense factors increase as you level, and it’s rewarding to go from missing 90% of the time to 70% of the time, to reversing the ratio and hitting more times than you miss.
Joshua clarified a few things from the comments on the first entry. He absolutely intended the game to be played by a single player. However, he also expected that the player would use two simultaneous logins. He built a feature where one user can “follow” another user on an automap, and I guess it was common at the time for one player to take over two terminals with two user names, playing on one, and using the automap on the other. A single player with two characters can also have them rescue and resurrect each other, at a higher chance of success than if you rely on the whims of the gods. Thus, I applied for and received a second Cyber1 account.
Playing with two terminal windows side-by-side.
I spent a number of hours mapping Level 2 and parts of Levels 3 and 4, but every time I thought I was finally badass enough to march around a level unopposed, I’d get my ass handed to me by some group of mages or demons who kill me in a single round.
Level 2 of the Camelot dungeon.
In the first entry, I noted that a number of rooms have “flavor text,” and I noticed that various rooms on Level 2 repeated those on the first level. For instance, both have rooms coated in guano, filled with statues, with soft ground, with an empty wallet, and so forth. Both have a small room with beakers and burners that seems to be a lab. Both have a room where I feel a “force of nature.” Joshua has hinted at deeper puzzles later in the game, and I wonder if they have something to do with these rooms.
If I need an alchemist’s lab later, I’ll know where to come.
Camelot is probably going to have to go on the back burner for a while. I enjoy the gameplay, but it’s taken me 16 hours to build a Level 14 character and map two and a half levels. The characters who have actually won the game are Level 60. I’ll dip into it now and then as I continue to progress with the rest of my list.
Time so far: 16 hours

The Battle of El Santuario, 17 October 1829
To mark the 188th anniversary of the Battle of El Santuario, here’s an extract from my book The Struggle for Power in Post-Independence Colombia and Venezuela (Palgrave Macmillan, 2012). A Spanish version, translated by Patricia Torres, was published as El Santuario: Historia global de una batalla, by Ediciones Universidad Externado de Colombia in 2016.
Prologue
General José María Córdova thought that he had chosen his positions well. The 370 men in his Army of Liberty were waiting at El Peñol, in the north-eastern Andes in Antioquia, Colombia, for the arrival of the government forces which were marching from Bogotá to suppress their rebellion. At 5pm on October 16, 1829 Córdova’s men were arranged so that they could converge on the government expedition as it emerged, tired, wet and cold from the mountain pass, and defeat it at Los Páramos, a plain to the west of Guatape, before it could regroup and exploit its numerical advantage.[i]
At El Peñol, General Córdova was in control – he was the man who five years earlier had completed the Independence of South America from colonial rule by vanquishing the Spanish Army at the Battle of Ayacucho in Peru. Now he was on home soil in Antioquia, a terrain he knew like the back of his hand, just miles from his family home in Rionegro. He was surrounded by loyal friends who trusted that his famous bravery and judgement would lead them to victory over the forces of tyranny. At Córdova’s side was his younger brother, Colonel Salvador Córdova. With them were their closest Antioquian comrades from the Wars of Independence. Capitán Braulio Henao had come out of retirement in nearby Sonsón when General Córdova called him to arms. Also preparing for battle were two merchants, Tenientes (Lieutenants) Francisco Escalante and Benedicto González. Standing at Córdova’s side as he surveyed the mountains for signs of the enemy’s progress were his assistants Francisco Giraldo, an old friend, and José María Arango, who had grown up in the Córdovas’ house in Rionegro while they were away campaigning and who now, still aged only 15, was about to experience his first taste of military campaigning. Alongside Arango were a host of other fourteen- to nineteen-years old boys, all born on these highland slopes, such as Eusebio Isaza and Bernabé Hoyos, who were both nervously awaiting their first ever taste of warfare.[ii] Sixty-five years later, Arango wrote down his vivid memories of the next twenty-four hours, which are the only detailed eye-witness account of the preparations for the Battle of El Santuario.
According to Arango’s account, at around 7pm a messenger, Manuel Antonio Gómez, arrived at Córdova’s camp at El Peñol. He reported that government forces had crossed the mountains through the San Carlos Pass, which was thought to have been “impassable” at that time of year, rather than the El Peñol pass where Córdova’s army now lay pointlessly in wait. Gómez said that he had been to the village of Vahos that morning, and that he had seen the army recovering from its endeavours and preparing to march down into Antioquia the next day on the road which passed through El Santuario, Marinilla and Rionegro. Córdova realized that his only chance to defeat the government’s forces was to intercept them at El Santuario before they reached Marinilla, a town which was hostile to Córdova’s rebellion and which he had threatened to burn to the ground only two days previously. Córdova realized that if he could not get to El Santuario by the next morning and cut off the government forces there, then his army would be easily defeated. He therefore ordered his followers to break camp and by 8pm the Army of Liberty was on its way. In normal circumstances they would have marched down the valley to Rionegro, and then up the Vahos road, but instead, as night fell Córdova led his men across country by the shortest route. Capitán Anselmo Pineda, who was born and bred in El Santuario, acted as a guide to the precarious and treacherous paths over the many streams and steep valleys that fractured the high mountain territory. Pineda was 24 years old, and had jumped out of the window of his disapproving father’s house nearby to join Córdova’s army. He led the soldiers in single file through the mountains until at around 3am they stopped at a ceramics factory, which occupied a hill about 3km from El Santuario.[iii] Here they paused and sheltered a while from the rain. Some of the soldiers collapsed, exhausted, whilst others warmed themselves by lighting small fires. At dawn they completed the journey down to the exposed plain of El Santuario.[iv] Arango’s narrative shows the state of the Army of Liberty as they prepared for battle:
At 6.am on October 17 the ragged troops began to reach their destination, the El Santuario plain, in complete disorder. Each soldier took off his clothes and wringed them out to try to get rid of the mud and water in which they had been drenched during the dark night’s march. By 8am their arms and weapons had still not arrived at the camp. There was no sign of the enemy and no news of their movements had yet arrived, because the local people had them well hidden. What little food our insignificant force had to eat was only meat, there was nothing else.[v]
That morning the cold was “glacial” and as the darkness receded “the clouds turned the sky into a foreboding slate shroud.”[vi] The effects of the improvised march quickly made themselves felt. The Army of Liberty was in no state to defend itself, let alone to launch the planned rout of the government forces. Córdova himself, exhausted, fell asleep leaning against one of his officers.[vii]
On the hills above them, the Colombian army’s “Western Expedition” prepared to swoop down on El Santuario. Having outmanoeuvred Córdova and surprised him, they now prepared to destroy him. They were led by General Daniel O’Leary, an Irishman just a year older than Córdova, an old friend from their time together at Simón Bolívar’s side in the Wars of Independence. In contrast to Córdova’s friends and recruits, O’Leary was assisted by a group of European-born officers well-used to the rigours of Andean campaigning. Some of these had recently returned to military service in controversial circumstances. One such officer was Comandante Rupert Hand, an Irishman who had been retired from the Colombian army since 1826 when he was controversially cleared of stealing government funds in Mérida (despite overwhelming evidence of his guilt) by Court Martial in Bogotá. Another was Coronel Richard Crofton, also an Irishman, who had been court martialed only a month previously, charged with insubordination.[viii] O’Leary was leading his first campaign as a General and was anxious to prove his capability. During the long journey overland from Bogotá to Antioquia, which often took commercial travellers over a month, but which the Western Expedition completed in just nineteen days, O’Leary wrote to his wife most days, reassuring her that he was up to the challenge, nervously comparing himself to “a Roman legionnaire” and even “Napoleon … who was a mere corporal compared to me.”[ix] The government had invested significant resources in O’Leary’s expedition, leaving Bogotá almost defenceless by giving O’Leary 700 men.[x] By the time they reached Honda on the Magdalena river this had increased to 780, and they had rations and supplies for one month’s campaigning. The expedition had sailed downstream on October 5.[xi] On the journey O’Leary had set about re-organising his officer corps so that he could have complete faith in it.[xii]
The physical difficulties of the journey over the Andes in adverse weather conditions took their toll on the government’s soldiers’ bodies but steeled the will of their officers. As they began to climb the mountain paths into Antioquia, O’Leary wrote that “the roads are the worst I have ever seen, the river is abominable and the weather pretty terrible. Nevertheless, all goes well and everyone is happy with me, particularly the soldiers who say that the little white fellow [blanquito] is excellent and looks after them.”[xiii] O’Leary had to slow the pace of the march because his body could not cope with the exertion.[xiv] After struggling along what historian Humberto Bronx called “almost impassable paths”,[xv] O’Leary’s troops collapsed “starving and nearly naked” at Vahos on October 16.[xvi] They had avoided Córdova’s advance parties and sentries, having been assisted by local resistance, most notably from the town of Marinilla which sent messengers, funds and offers of horses and soldiers.[xvii] On October 17, O’Leary’s expedition set off early, reaching the Alto de María heights above El Santuario in the mid-morning after “a fatiguing march.”[xviii] Carmelo Fernández, one of the officers, recorded that the soldiers were pepped for battle by “water bottles filled with aguardiente alcanforado, a cardiac stimulant, and biscuits that made you drunk” to give them courage.[xix]
Advancing with his assistants to a lookout point, O’Leary observed Córdova’s troops laid out beneath him on the El Santuario plain. He saw that Córdova had kept his troops together, divided in three units. The right flank was commanded by Benedicto Gonzalez and Ramon Escalante, and the left flank by Salvador Córdova and Anselmo Pineda. The centre, with half of the soldiers in its ranks, was commanded by José María Córdova himself, and was formed in front of a small house. O’Leary could not see that a small detachment of this central section, led by Braulio Henao and Francisco Giraldo, was hidden behind the building.
Córdova’s rebel Army of Liberty was waiting for the official Colombian Army to present itself. Rousing themselves after their tiring night’s exertions, their clothes still damp and their stomachs empty, the soldiers listened to General Córdova’s appeals to their bravery and their patriotism. Out of their sight, O’Leary formed his forces ready to attack. The cavalry, commanded by Crofton and Hand, was to charge down the hill and into the Army of Liberty’s right flank. The infantry, who were to engage the centre, were in two units under two vastly experienced European veterans of the Napoleonic wars, an Italian, Carlos Castelli, and a German, Heinrich Lutzen. When O’Leary perceived that all was ready, at around 11am, he led his troops over the crest of the hill and down towards El Santuario. José María Arango recalled the moment when O’Leary launched his attack:
And then we saw them, first the high black leather hats on those veterans’ heads, and then we could make out their clothes, which were worn and dirty, showing the marks of the terrible journey they had made in order to confront us; we could see that they had passed many days and nights of hunger and exhaustion, and that these were men who had made many sacrifices, and who were accustomed to suffering. We saw three officers appear at the front of the army as it halted on the heights. They observed us for a few moments, then they began the descent, and behind them we saw the hill begin to be covered with soldiers marching with great order and discipline.
When General O’Leary had arrived near to our positions, our whole army heard these words ring out:
“Córdova, Give yourself up, don’t sacrifice these few recruits for nothing!”
General Córdova replied with a strong and resonant voice which marked his irrevocable resolution:
“Córdova will never give himself up to a vile foreigner, a mercenary and a wage-earner like you; he would rather succumb!”
So O’Leary turned and walked back to his position.
With the heights covered with such a well-organised force, the cornet was sounded, and the silence was broken by their suddenly opening fire on us from all angles, so well trained and well executed, and down below we began to be covered with hails of lead and a huge black cloud of smoke from the gunpowder. It looked like the most horrific storm as all this descended upon us.”[xx]
The Battle of El Santuario had begun.

Some Last-Minute Thoughts on Trips and Tours
While it's actual that most visits can be composed yourself, by organizing your own vehicle and paying on the entryway, Bangkok can be a bad dream to get around in movement, which means you may be late for your action, or undoubtedly get lost on account of a deceitful tuk driver hoping to make a greater toll by taking you on a joyful drive around the city. It happens.
Moreover, a large number of these visits get reserved rapidly in the high-season months. It's likewise a major bother to sort out these things from your lavish lodging when should appreciate an unwinding occasion.
What I like best about composed excursions is meeting individuals. Having voyage all around SE Asia, I found that sorting out my own journeys regularly left me separated and without individuals to meet and appreciate the involvement with.
Despite the fact that being driven around by a guide can be a touch of attempting now and again, life is constantly better shared. What's more, I've met some marvelous individuals on day trips and truly lived it up as a result of it.
So for an additional couple of Euros, Dollars or Pounds, having the outing booked ahead of time, getting got and having everything laid out for you on a celebrity main street, in a manner of speaking, is a more dependable, pleasant approach to see the city, especially in case you're 35+ like me and can't do with gallivanting around in the heating sun requesting headings.
