GTA 1 also has a pretty dark message. No matter how far the selectable protagonist gets, he/she will always be at the bottom of the food chain. No matter who they kill or who they work for or how many cities he/she moves to. He/she are always someone else's lapdog. The ending is also a downer...like the guy he/she is working for (don't get me wrong, I enjoy Brother Marcus's character but the guy was a dick) is terrible.

I love that game. It's underrated and I feel a lot of people don't give it or the other 2D verse games a fair chance because the controls are a lot harder to get used to and to understand what is going on and how the selectable protagonist is feeling, you have to do a lot of reading.

I do disagree though that the other GTAs are power fantasies. Like yeah, the characters can do a bunch of shit and get away with it but so could they in the first game and pretty much any open world game.

But a lot of them...the endings don't exactly scream power fantasy.

GTA London 1969 the selectable protagonist goes on a whole rampage and kills most of Cartwright's crew over something that wasn't even true. You think you are advanced your character when really the whole thing was just a way to manipulate the selectable protagonist. Much like GTA 1, no matter how much the selectable protagonist seems to advance, he will always be on someone else's leash.

GTA London 1961 is basically just port crime the simulator but it becomes grim and not much really happens story wise outside of the added detail of the selectable protagonist having worked with Cartwright for a long time but if you played 1969, this becomes depressing because you know what's coming.

GTA II well...you already explained that one.

GTA III ends with Claude completely alone. Yeah, he defeats Catalina but because he betrayed pretty much everyone, he will never know a moment's peace. That's probably why he shot at (or killed depending on your interpretation) Maria because he can't trust anyone. Not really as sad as the other games because he's such a fucking psycho that he probably likes being alone and away from people unless he can use them for something.

GTA VC I would say is the closest to a power fantasy but even then Tommy still gets betrayed by Lance and the whole thing is...bitter sweet when Tommy has to go after and kill Lance, this guy he has been working with this whole time.

GTA SA ends with a bunch of riots and two of CJ's friends betrayed him. Yeah, it's not super sad because CJ still has a lot of allies around him and outsmarted a mafia lord and the corrupt government but still.

GTA Advance ends with Mike learning his mentor and best friend had actually faked his own death and had been trying to have him killed this whole time.

GTA LCS ends with Toni getting screwed over by Leone and if you have played III, Toni isn't going to rise above this and is going to remain under the thumb of Leone and his toxic mother.

GTA VCS ends with Vic's love getting killed, which is caused by his brother, having to fix his brother's mistakes, and having to flee for crimes he didn't even commit and Lance makes it as much of a pain to do as possible. And if you have played VCS, you know where this is going. This is especially terrible because every other GTA game, the protagonist (s) starts the game off as a criminal but Vic was just trying to do the right thing but got pushed into crime.

GTA IV ends with either Roman or Kate shot and outside of Bernie, all of Niko's friends are still dead. Regardless of what you have Niko decide to do with Darko, it's still extremely depressing and doesn't feel like a victory either way.

GTA TBOGT is more upbeat but even then Evan is still a piece of shit til the very end and this diamond they have all been doing this for is picked up by a homeless person.

GTA TLATD is much the same way and if you played GTA V, you know what is coming for most of them. They aren't able to escape their addictions or their lifestyles. A lot of people hate how Johnny and his crew were taken out but it was going to happen eventually, either by Trevor's hands or some other crazy crime lord they pissed off.

GTA V I would say is the most upbeat, mainly because two out of three of them actually do try to improve their lives in somewhat productive way and the big betrayal already happened. (there are other betrayals but not by close friends or allies...it's not really shocking that Stretch, Haines, and Devin who are shown to be backstabbers the entire time betray the trio) Trevor is another story. And with online, we know they did have a happier ending than the other protags on this list. Though I also think that has to do with how largely commercialized online is. Trevor's DLC can be depressing because it's a prequel. No one is going to want to buy the next DLC if Franklin is miserable or if there was a hint Michael went back to being a depressed alcoholic or that Trevor is alone and miserable.

Not that I hate Online or anything but I am somewhat excited to see a single player story mode again that has a darker story and likely will have a depressing ending if they are going to follow the Bonnie and Clyde storyline inspiration all the way through.

Y'know, GTA 1 isn't well liked by a lot of Grand Theft Auto fans, an' that makes sense. GTA 1's a brutal as Hell game, it can will and wants t' fuck with ya in ways other GTA games never would.

Some take that t' mean that GTA 1 is a bad game, I wouldn't say that. GTA 1 knows what its doin' and it revels in it. It's a game where even having 1 Wanted Rating (or 'Cop Head' in this case) will put you in massive danger. It's a game where your normal health is 1 hit and your max is 4. An enemy with a machine gun can and will delete you.

Combat is such that the best weapon your likely to have access to is cars, either to run over enemies or to blow up with gunfire to catch enemies in the explosion (the other best weapon is the Flamethrower... good luck finding one).

And, of course, every mission is 1 shot, fail and the mission is done. No retries, you want a retry? Restart the level.

No in-game map, use a real one. Don't have a real one because it's the 2020s? Not our problem (there's plenty of very good maps online, even maps that'll tell ya where crates with good stuff in them am).

Yet, I like GTA 1. Don't get me wrong, I have a long, long list of complaints, I'm very critical of a lot of the writing and they really should've just cut the concept of 'following a car' missions, but I always go back to it. Why? Because it is doing exactly what it wants to do.

GTA 1 wants to brutalise ya, later GTAs am power fantasy, GTA 1 y'am running scared, doing whatever you can to get by. Even in-story your at the low-end of the organisations you work for. High expectations, little respect, following the ever unpredictable whims of your employers. By GTA 2 this feeling of overwhelming odds was gone. GTA 2 will still happily be very harsh on you, but less so than 1.

Maybe I'm odd, almost certainly I'm odd, but I appreciate GTA 1 for what it is.

Muriel’s design comes as a cross between two characters— Tatsumaki from One Punch Man, and Sebastian Niccals, father of Murdoc Niccals of Gorillaz fame.

Malfiore casually uses nadsat, the fictional slang of the violent youths in Anthony Burgess’s 1963 novella, A Clockwork Orange.

They are both set in London in the 60s with an amazing soundtrack thats for sure! Now some info ! 1. Instead of the ordinary cops from GTA1 we got the London finest! The bobbies! There uniform I didnt have any source on cause you dont see them ingame. I only know they are wearing bobby helmets ( see the ingame pic!) so I went with ordinary british police uniforms from the 60s! ( fun fact, many of the source photos I used were from crazy beatles crowds the police were trying to contain!) 2.

It didnt care really that much however whoever you picked cause they all pretty much look the same from above. Nevertheless GTA London had its own share of characters! He appeared in some artwork with the lines- Don't mess sunshine. Or I'll kick yer bloody head in. Understood ponce?".
