A Day in the Life of...

I thought we could use more funny content in this category. Here's what the day in the life of each character might look like, only there is something that they are all centered on. A big dumb rumor.

Each chapter will be a different Student in 1-A with some appearances from class 1-B

Chapter 1: Midoriya Izuku

Midoriya had already been awake since 4 in the morning, training his quirk and his muscles. He doubled checked the time and realized he didn’t have much time left to get ready for class. He quickly cleaned himself off and put on his uniform. Ready for the day, he started on his short walk to class from the dorms.

Midoriya opened the door to only see about 5 of his classmates. There was Iida of course who was on his way back to the classroom door to make sure all of his classmates made it on time. Such is the job of a class rep. There was Sero who was already in his seat looking over some notes. Not someone he would have expected. Tsu was also at her desk waiting for the day to begin. Momo was seated next to Tsu discussing the notes from yesterday. Midoriya figured she would move back to her seat by the time class begins. Then, of course, Bakugo was in his seat, leaning back with the front legs of the chair up off of the floor.

Midoriya walked up to Tsu’s desk and greeted her. “Good morning Asu-Tsu” He corrected himself.

“Good morning Midoriya, gero” Tsu replied.

The two started chatting about yesterday’s class and what they were going to be learning today. Other students began to trickle in with Iida greeting each of them as they walked in. Iida asked them to quickly take their seats. Of course, most of them were too tired this early in the morning to have much energy to do much else. Kaminari looked like he was going to pass out straight onto his desk.

Aizawa stood up suddenly from behind the desk in his signature sleeping bag. He spoke about the use of the school’s training grounds and other policies that had changed recently. He then took his leave as Present Mic arrived.

“GOOD MORNING CLASS 1-A! LET’S GET READY TO CONJUGATE SOME VERBS!” Present mic yelled into the room. Kaminari shot up at his desk and then immediately groaned. Most of the class snickered. Midoriya just tried to focus considering English wasn’t necessarily his strong suit. He wasn’t bad at it by any means, he just didn’t excel at it like other students did.

Soon after class and a little bit of hero training, they were dismissed to go to lunch. Midoriya met up with Uraraka, Iida, and Todoroki so they could eat lunch together.

“Why does English have to be so hard?” Uraraka sighed grabbing her tray and sitting down at their usual table.

“Would you like some help with today's homework?” Iida offered.

“Oh, would you mind helping me too?” Midoriya asked. Todoroki nodded in agreement, wanting to join their impromptu study session. The 4 of them got to work as they ate their food.

It seemed like lunch had gone by way too fast. It was as if Midoriya got 5 minutes of helpful advice from Iida before they had to return back to the classroom. Midoriya sighed but kept an optimistic outlook on the day. He wanted to be the best he could be and that required extra work and a good attitude.

As Midoriya and his friends returned, the others who were already in the classroom seemed to be buzzing about something.

“What’s going on here?” Iida scolded.

“Oh, I just heard this rumor that a second-year dated everyone in the hero course the year before we got here! That would include the current third years!” Mina gossiped excitedly.

“What? That’s ridiculous! There is no way that rumor is true” Iida shot back.

“I don’t know I think it’s possible! Plus, I heard they were scoping out our class!” Mina countered.

As if summoned, Mineta shot up and was instantly right beside Mina.

“Girl or boy! This is a life or death situation and I need to know now! Was it a girl or a boy!” Mineta desperately asked.

“Hmm I don’t know if their gender was stated in the rumor, so I guess we’ll just have to wait and see who gets asked out first!” Mina told him. Mineta slumped back into his seat.

It’s true this rumor did sound ridiculous, but weirder things have happened, right? Midoriya started thinking about how this would have happened when he stumbled back into the phrase ‘Scoping out our class’. He froze and turned completely red.

“What's the matter Deku? Are you worried you might get asked out?” Uraraka teased.

Midoriya shielded his face. “No w-way! A-a-absolutely not!” He replied frantically. The thought did embarrass him, but there was no way someone from a class above him would specifically seek him out. Hell, he didn’t even think that someone in his own class would be smitten with him. It didn’t bother him. He just didn’t think anyone would spend their time dating because they were all so focused on their hero work.

“If it’s true then that student is clearly pathetic, having to shuffle through a bunch of other students” Bakugo spoke up, looking out the window with a disgusted look on his face.

“I don’t know. I wouldn’t mind dating someone from a class above us. Even if it was for just one week” Kaminari threw out.

“Well yeah but you don’t have any standards” Jiro said without missing a beat.

“Enough gossiping. It’s time for class” Cementoss scolded walking into their classroom. Everyone took their seats again, but Midoriya was having trouble concentrating. The thought that someone could be looking for him for a relationship really put his brain through a loop. Cementoss had to call his name to snap him out of it at least twice.

Midoriya figured he would take matters into his own hands to either confirm or refute this strange rumor. He waited until after school to try and talk to some second years on their way back to the dorms. As he was looking around for someone to ask questions, he felt a pair of eyes on him. He quickly turned around ready to confront whoever was watching. There was nobody there. He tensed up and tried to shake off this paranoid feeling.

He spotted a second year in the courtyard and tried to approach them when he thought he heard someone else call his name from behind. He turned around again, but no one was there. He wasn’t going crazy, was he? He started to sweat. The second-year student that he saw was gone. He missed his opportunity to ask about this weird rumor. Plus, he was being followed by someone. What if it was the person the rumor was about? What if they were here to ask him out? How do you reject someone politely? Midoriya was freaking out. His signature mumbles could be heard by other people passing in the courtyard.

Before he could really get any of his thoughts together, he felt someone tap on his shoulder and he nearly jumped out of his school uniform. He slowly turned around, accepting his fate. He looked and saw it was Uraraka. “You’re not the second year asking people out,” Midoriya said still surprised. Uraraka laughed at Midoriya’s reaction.

“I just thought it would be funny to mess with you” She admitted.

“You almost gave me a heart attack!” Midoriya replied. Uraraka laughed again.

“Sorry Deku” She apologized smiling sincerely.

Well, at least he didn’t have to worry about being confessed to at that moment in time. He wondered if they would ever find out about the rumor.

The next day, Midoriya was running a little late. He made it just in time.

“You were almost late! Try leaving a little earlier next time” Iida recommended.

The class was still talking excitedly about the rumor trying to guess who the rumor was about. It made Midoriya promptly put his head down on his desk. He would have to survive another day of maybe possibly being confessed to. He wasn’t sure if he could handle that kind of pressure today.

By lunchtime, class 1-A had calmed down enough to where the rumor left most everyone’s minds. Midoriya got to enjoy lunch with his friends without worry.

Midoriya and his friends made it back to class. Now the class was exploding with energy. What had happened? Bakugo looked like he was going to murder someone, which admittedly wasn’t different from most days. This was different though because his anger wasn’t really directed at anyone in the class.

“Oh, dude! That’s gotta be from the 2nd year!” Kirishima shouted surprised.

“THERE’S NO WAY SOME DUMB LOSER IN ANOTHER CLASS GAVE ME THIS SAD EXCUSE FOR A LETTER” Bakugo yelled almost blowing up the desks around him.

“Oh god” Midoriya thought. Does this mean the rumor is true? If it is, can Midoriya take it easy because Bakugo had gotten the letter? Nobody could really put anything else together because Cementoss walked in again scolding the students.

Midoriya finally made it through the day without being contacted by any second-year student. He made his way to his locker to get his backpack when he spotted it. There was a letter. He swallowed hard, too scared to even open the letter.

“What’s wrong Midoriya?” Iida asked.

Then his friends spotted the letter. Todoroki, Iida, and Uraraka looked shocked. They all stood frozen in front of Midoriya’s locker. Bakugo was passing by and caught sight of the 4 students just standing there.

“What the hell are you losers doing?” He growled.

Midoriya managed to work up the courage to pull the letter out of his locker. He looked to the letter then to Bakugo who looked like he was going to explode on the spot. Midoriya yelped and ran out of the building as fast as he could.

Iida was calling for Midoriya to slow down but Midoriya didn’t really notice in his panic. He looked down at the letter in his hands. His hands were shaking, but he took a deep breath and opened the letter. It Read:

Dear Midoriya,

I have watched you ever since the sports festival. You are truly incredible, even though you break yourself sometimes. I’ve watched you for a while now and my heart sores every time I see you. The very mention of your name sends shivers down my spine. I think I love you! Please meet me in the courtyard tomorrow after school! If you don’t show up, I’ll just assume that you don’t feel the same way and I’ll cry. I hope to see you soon!

There was no signature. No hint of really who it could’ve been. “What am I going to do” Midoriya hung his head in defeat. If he showed up the person would get the wrong idea. If he didn’t show up, the person would be heartbroken. He went over and over the dilemma in his head. How would a hero handle this situation?

The next day, after losing a lot of sleep, he decided he would show up but explain the situation and his feelings. They might cry, but at least they would get an answer and not wonder for the rest of their life. Midoriya was pretty shaken up for the rest of the day.

Before the last class of the day, 1-A was talking about the two letters given out to their class. They asked if they purposefully picked the two strongest boys in the class. They also wondered if it was a girl who did it, considering both Bakugo and Midoriya were male.

“I don’t think that means anything. This person could be gay, or bi, or pan….” Mina mentioned.

“Plus, this person could be non-binary or genderfluid or something” Jiro brought up.

There really wasn’t any reason to speculate about this person’s gender or sexual orientation.

“So you guys still think this mystery person exists?” Momo asked.

“What do you mean? They clearly exist because they’ve been writing letters” Kaminari replied.

“You guys could use some brushing up on your detective skills. This was a test from the teachers to see if you could question strange incidents instead of taking everything at face value” Momo explained.

“WHAT?! YOU’VE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME!” the whole class seemed to shout at the same time.

Midoriya felt a weight lift off of his shoulders. Then he realized that if this was a test he would’ve failed. “Wait was this like a test test….like one we could fail?” Midoriya asked pale as a sheet.

“Oh no. I think this was just to assess where we all are currently as far as problem-solving goes” Momo replied.

Midoriya sighed again. He did realize that he could’ve done a little more research on this so-called rumor. He had a long way to go to grab the titled of Number One Hero.

It’s time for music and music technology to be a voice for migrants

From countries across Europe to the USA, migration is at the center of Western politics at the moment. But that raises a question: why aren’t more people who make music, music instruments, and music tech louder about these issues?

Migration – temporary and permanent – is simply a fact of life for a huge group of people, across backgrounds and aspirations. That can involve migration to follow opportunities, and refugees and asylum seekers who move for their own safety and freedom. So if you don’t picture immigrants, migrants, and refugees when you think of your society, you just aren’t thinking.

Musicians ought to be uniquely qualified to speak to these issues, though. Extreme anti-immigration arguments all assume that migrants take away more from a society than they give back. And people in the music world ought to know better. Music has always been based on cultural exchange. Musicians across cultures have always considered touring to make a living. And to put it bluntly, music isn’t a zero sum game. The more you add, the more you create.

Music gets schooled in borders

As music has grown more international, as more artists tour and cross borders, at least the awareness is changing. That’s been especially true in electronic music, in a DJ industry that relies on travel. Now, being a DJ crossing a border isn’t the same as being a refugee running for your life. But then on some other level, it can allow artists to experience immigration infrastructure – both when it works for them, and when it works against them. A whole generation of artists, including even those from relatively privileged Western nations, is now learning the hard way about the immigration system. And that’s something they might have missed as tourists, particularly if they come from places like the USA, western Europe, Australia, and other places well positioned in the system.

The immigration system they see will often come off as absurdist. National policies worldwide categorize music as migrant labor and require a visa. In many countries, these requirements are unenforced in all but big-money gigs. But in some countries – the USA, Canada, and UK being prime examples – they’re rigorously enforced, and not coincidentally, the required visas have high fees.

Showing up at a border carrying music equipment or a bag of vinyl records is an instant red flag – whether a paid gig is your intention or not. (I’m surprised, actually, that no one talks about this in regards to the rise of the USB stick DJ. If you aren’t carrying a controller or any records, sailing through as a tourist is a lot easier.) Border officials will often ask visitors to unlock phones, hand over social media passwords. They’ll search Facebook events by name to find gigs. Or they’ll even just view the presence of a musical instrument as a violation.

Being seen as “illegal” because you’re traveling with a guitar or some records is a pretty good illustration of how immigration can criminalize simple, innocent acts. Whatever the intention behind that law, it’s clear there’s something off here – especially given the kinds of illegality that can cross borders.

When protection isn’t

This is not to argue for open borders. There are times when you want border protections. I worked briefly in environmental advocacy as we worked on invasive species that were hitching a ride on container ships – think bugs killing trees and no more maple syrup on your pancakes, among other things. I was also in New York on 9/11 and watched from my roof – that was a very visible demonstration of visa security oversight that had failed. Part of the aim of customs and immigration is to stop the movement of dangerous people and things, and I don’t think any rational person would argue with that.

But even as a tiny microcosm of the larger immigration system, music is a good example of how laws can be uneven, counter-intuitive, and counterproductive. The US and Canada, for instance, do have an open border for tourists. So if an experimental ambient musician from Toronto comes to play a gig in Cleveland, that’s not a security threat – they could do the same as a tourist. It’s also a stretch of the imagination that this individual would have a negative impact on the US economy. Maybe the artist makes a hundred bucks cash and … spends it all inside the USA, not to mention brings in more money for the venue and the people employed by it. Or maybe they make $1000 – a sum that would be wiped out by the US visa fee, to say nothing of slow US visa processing. Again, that concert creates more economic activity inside the US economy, and it’s very likely the American artist sharing the bill goes up to Montreal and plays with them next month on top of it. I could go on, but it’s … well, boring and obvious.

Artists and presenters worldwide often simply ignore this visa system because it’s slow, expensive, and unreliable. And so it costs economies (and likely many immigration authorities) revenue. It costs societies value and artistic and cultural exchange.

Of course, scale that up and the same is true, across other fields. Immigrants tend to give more into government services than they take out, they tend to own businesses that employ more local people (so they create jobs), they tend to invent new technologies (so they create jobs again), and so on.

Advocacy and music

Immigration advocacy could be seen as something in the charter of anyone in the music industry or musical instruments industry.

Music technology suffers as borders are shut down, too. Making musical instruments and tools requires highly specialized labor working in highly specialized environments. From production to engineering to marketing, it’s an international business. I actually can’t think of any major manufacturer that doesn’t rely on immigrants in key roles. (Even many tiny makers involve immigrants.)

And the traditional music industry lean heavily on immigrant talent, too. Those at the top of the industry have powerful lobbying efforts – efforts that could support greater cultural exchange and rights for travelers. Certainly, its members are often on the road. But let’s take the Recording Academy (the folks behind the Grammy Awards).

Instead, their efforts seem to fixate on domestic intellectual property law. So the Recording Academy and others were big on the Music Modernization Act – okay, fine, a law to support compensation for creators.

But while the same organization advocated on behalf of instruments traveling – domestic rules around carry-on and checked instruments – but not necessarily humans. So it could be that there’s more interest in your guitar getting across borders than people.

I don’t want to be unfair to the Recording Association – and not just because I think it might hurt my Grammy winning chances. (Hey, stop laughing.) No, I think it’s more that we as a community have generally failed to take up this issue in any widespread way. (I sincerely hope someone out there works for the record industry and writes to say that you’re actually working on this and I’m wrong.)

More than anything else, music can cross borders. It can speak to people when you don’t speak their language, literally. When music travels, emotion and expression travels – artists and technology alike.

It’s personal – isn’t it for you?

I personally feel the impact of all of this, now having been seven years in Berlin, and able to enjoy opportunities, connections, and perspective that come from living in Germany and working with people both from Germany and abroad. I feel hugely grateful to the German state for allowing my business to immigrate (my initial visa was a business visa, which involved some interesting bureaucracy explaining to the Berlin Senate what this site is about). I’ve even benefited from the support of programs like the Goethe Institut and host governments to work in cultural diplomacy.

I’ve also had the chance to be involved writing in support of visas and financial backing for artists coming from Iran, Mexico, Kazakhstan, and many other places, for programs I’ve worked on.

And all of this is really a luxury – even when we’re talking about artists traveling to support their careers and feed themselves. For so many people, migration is a matter of survival. Now that we’ve lived the system, we have an added obligation to make it work for them. Sometimes the threats to their lives come from geopolitical and economic policies engineered by the governments we come from – meaning as citizens, we share some responsibility for the impact others have felt. But whether or not that’s the case, I would hope we feel that obligation as human beings. That’s the basis of international rule of law on accepting refugees and granting asylum. It’s the reason those principles are uncompromising and sometimes even challenging. Our world is held together – or not – based on that basic fairness we afford to fellow humans. If people come to where we live and claim their survival and freedom depends on taking them in, we accept the obligation to at least listen to their case.

Those of us in the music world could use our privilege, and the fact that our medium is so essential to human expression, to be among the loudest voices for these human rights. When we live in countries who listen to us, we should talk to other citizens and talk to our governments. We should tell the stories that make these issues more relatable. We should do what some people I know are doing in the music world, too – work on education and involvement for refugees, help them to feel at home in our communities and to develop whatever they need to make a home here, and make people feel welcome at the events we produce.

That’s just the principles, not policies. But I know a lot of people in my own circle have worked on the policy and advocacy sides here. I certainly would invite you to share what we might do. If you’ve been impacted by immigration obstacles and have ideas of how we help, I hope we hear that, too.

And so on…

But I do hope that as musicians, we work with people who share basic beliefs in caring for other people. I know there’s no single “community” or “industry” that can offer that. But we certainly can try to build our own circle in a way that does.

Some examples from here in Berlin working on refugee issues here. I would argue immigration policy can find connections across refugees and migrants, asylum seekers and touring musicians, as everyone encounters the same larger apparatus and set of laws:

Passive Income Lifestyle is a course by YouTuber ODi Productions. It looks to teach you how you can build an online business that will earn you profits passively regardless of where you are.

If you’re wondering about whether you should sign up or not, then we’ll answer that question today. I’ll go through the contents in each module so that you can decide for yourself if this is really the course for you and if it’s worth spending $2,497.

The course sells as the way to earn the steps you need to take to set up an online venture using affiliate marketing. Course members receive access to several videos with lessons on different topics, weekly live streams, the program’s community, and a tool that will help you research niches and products.

Mind you, this isn’t really a new program. It’s a relaunch of a course he released a couple of years ago with some updates here and there. The sales page states that you can access the course by paying 50% of its original cost, so the course is almost $5,000.

Who’s the author?

ODi Productions is quite famous on YouTube, enjoying over 200,000 subscribers, and he’s also an affiliate marketer. He regularly uploads new content, and the topics are fairly standard: recommending online businesses and strategies. Since he’s an affiliate marketer, a lot of his content revolves around it.

If you visit his website, you can learn he dropped out from the UCLA, and it has taken him 3 years to build a fortune. It has allowed him to live in 2 different cities and own expensive cars. However, if you want to know more about the guy, you must sign up to his masterclass, where he provides a case study of his story.

Keep in mind that doing so will get you into ODi’s mailing list, so you’ll start getting emails selling you his different courses.

On that note, ODi is also known for selling different courses, and we can name Affiliate Evolution as one of several released in just a couple of years. He usually prices his courses at $1,000 or more.

Mindset stuff

… Except week 2 won’t teach you anything, either!

This week is just an explanation of why and how mindset is the most important thing to ODi. The lessons go through how to think and establishing habits.

You learn some mind hacks as well as how to develop daily routines to increase your productivity plus some tips.

I always find mindset and motivational videos entertaining. I’m one of those who’ll tell you that having habits and thinking properly will give you a great boost in all senses. However, waiting an entire week to learn about how to start your business just to get a motivational section is frustrating to say the least.

Understanding affiliate marketing

The 3rd week finally touches on the business model, but it’s not much consolation. It’s just a week dedicated to explaining what the model is and how it works.

Now, I seriously doubt someone would spend $2,500 on a course just because he saw an ad or someone told him “hey, affiliate marketing is good money”. I’m sure everyone taking this course already know what it is.

From that, since this module explains how the model works and why it’s a good business choice, it’s probably the 3rd consecutive week you don’t learn anything. Yes, a $2,500 course just spent 21 days without teaching something.

At least you can see some affiliate marketers and websites that found success.

Starting your business

Let me tell you something first. The 4th module is where you finally learn something about how to actually start your affiliate marketing business. However, once this week has begun, your chance to ask for a refund already expired, so this is a HUGE red flag.

With that warning aside, this course talks about how to set the foundations of your business. Lessons include how to research and choose a niche, joining programs, which platforms are the best, how to create content and research keywords, SEO, building an email list to then use for your email marketing, paid traffic, and retargeting.

It’s quite extensive, but it doesn’t really make up for the 3 weeks you just wasted.

Authority sites

Week 5 goes into what are niche authority sites, why you want to use one, and how you can build it. It’s the first method out of 4 discussed in this course, and from here, it’s 1 week per method.

After learning the fundamentals, you learn how to build an authority site. ODi also gives you 2 case studies of how he’s used these sites to find success. He says this approach has made him $500,000 from just one site, and it made him $40,000 in a month once.

Sales funnels

The 2nd approach is something called “perpetual sales funnel”, which is supposedly a sustainable source of traffic and conversions that last for a really long time. He came up with this method after a lot of testing and improvements.

After perfecting the method, he allegedly made $20,000 in a single month from a single product.

Personal branding

The 7th week is how to build yourself as a brand, and it works off the idea that customers prefer to connect with people than companies, and you can exploit that to your advantage.

The videos explain the method, which platforms work better for this, a few recommendations, and how to create a video on YouTube.

Landing pages

The last week explains how to build a single page site (called landing page). The idea is that you send traffic to it, and it works like a funnel, conditioning visitors to buy the product.

ODi advises you to use Google, YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram, and he explains how to advertise on each platform.

The final videos are about installing your FB pixel, expanding the landing page, and the legal side of the business (quite a good video).

Extras

Overall, this isn’t a bad course. I’m particularly fond of how it’s structured and some of the insights provided by ODi, who’s definitely not a nobody.

However, the course is just ridiculously expensive. Sure, you get good content, but it also fails to deliver enough detail on many approaches. Besides, he doesn’t really provide a good explanation of how to actually employ each method.

And of course, you have 3 weeks filled with filler content. $2,500 means each week is about $312, so you’re paying $936 and 21 days to have ODi say hi, some motivation, and a refreshment on things you already know.

Consider Savage Affiliates, which offers a lot more detail and content, with hundreds of videos, for just $197.

I was astounded when they quoted me with $2500 every 6 months or $5,000 a year. I was just completely blown away. My car, a 2004 Nissan Sentra, is barely even worth that much. I called them up and asked why they were quoting me that rate and they said it was because of my age and credit score. I am only 23 and I have really bad credit, but there is NO OTHER insurance company that quoted me a rate anything near as high as that. Progressive quoted me $600 every 6 months or $1200 a year. Geico $613 every 6 months or $1200 a year. Allstate was $1,200 every 6 months or $2,400 a year. And State Farm was $800 every 6 months, $1600 a year. These quotes were all for identical insurance policies. I have never been in an accident, never been arrested, never been given a ticket for ANYTHING. I notified the agent who initially did not want to accept blame, but since the payments were automatic and my account number was on each payment they took, they were responsible. The error was compounded by the fact that the cancellation notice went to HIS address (how dumb was that!) So I had no way of knowing that I was cancelled. I was without a car for 2 weeks and lost my job. After much haggling and many sleepless nights of wondering what to do without a job or a car, the insurance company finally admitted blame, paid the impound fees of $1,250.00. The agent also said they would handle the 2 tickets totaling 1K. FAST FORWARD TO 2010 in my state, the county did a scofflaw sweep and I was summoned to court with over 5 thousand other delinquent drivers to address unpaid tickets. The order was come to court by April 30th or be arrested. Realizing this had to be a mistake, but fearful of the law, I stood in line for over 5 hours in blazing heat, then sat in court another 5 hours waiting for my day in court. I was immediately threatened with arrest because the 2 tickets were not paid. Up to that moment, I had no idea the insurance company had not paid the 2 tickets. This time, not only was my insurance and registration cancelled, my license was suspended due to the age of the infraction (5 years). In front of the judge, I called the agents' office only to be told by the secretary that they had no intention to pay the ticket. Paying to get the car out of impound was enough. He is perfectly okay with the idea, but I would still like a truck to haul my horse (his Taurus SE can't do that long distance) for when I move, so it would be more convenient for me to have my own vehicle. I am a 17 year old female. My grades are a B average. I don't have a credit score, i pay with cash or my debit card. I want a truck (preferably an old cheap one that runs).
