Okay, so just coming at Dream's mod from a technology standpoint, this is actually a really really cool setup and beneficial for basically everyone.

Like, live translation has existed for awhile, but there's a fundamental issue of it being rather expensive to access, and not particularly great. In order to really improve live translation features, you need to do a shit ton of testing with all sorts of people with different accents, using different styles of language.

The problem is then you need to get a whole bunch of people beta testing, in a situation where they'll use live translation a lot, but it can't be for anything important because there's going to be lots of bugs. Plus the whole expensive of getting it set up, and the fact for most people day to day, they don't need live translation.

Dream using it for an open source minecraft mod that allows for self-hosting the translation APIs is basically a perfect use case. The more people that use it, the more feedback and refined the translation can become, and it will experience a lot of different usage contexts. When there are bugs, it won't be particularly serious since it's just being used in a video game.

Live translation as a concept has the possibility to do a shit ton of good once it's well developed and mostly functional. Human translators will always do a better job, and I doubt live translation will be a significant factor for human translators in the near future, but live translation can help fill in the gaps. Particularly in emergency situations where it's not possible to get a human translator in time. Or in situations where having human translators just isn't feasible, but quality of life could be greatly improved with having some translation ability.

Anyways, I expect the live translation to be super messy at first and I'm really excited to see it improve and the content creators have a fun time with it!

to be clear, this was an older version of starship with less shielding and it was being pushed beyond its perceived limits (based on simulations and previous tests) and they were really emphasizing that this would most likely result in a catastrophic failure and to not get our hopes up.

but not only did it not explode during reentry like everyone was expecting, it actually managed to successfully perform a flip-and-burn and a landing burn for a soft landing in the ocean.

Sometimes you just have one of those moments where the progress we've made as a culture get thrown into stark relief. You look at something and go "Holy shit, that would never have happened when I was a kid."

Today, I had one of those moments when I realized that the teenage boys I'm working with are just. genuinely, openly enthusiastic about going to Build-a-Bear for their outing.

These are sixteen and seventeen year old boys! They just had a whole conversation about what to name their "cute", mostly new squishmallows! They're genuinely excited that they're going to Build-a-Bear this weekend and asking other kids to pick up specific accessories for them!!

Holy shit, that never would've happened when I was 16. None of the boys would have dared to be visibly interested - and neither would most of the girls! There would have been a million gay jokes and "Haha, you're a girl" jokes and "What are you, a baby?" jokes. Teenagers weren't even supposed to care about anything back then!

Less than 15 years later, and I'm watching three 17 year old boys treat all that as not even worthy of comment.

So let's call that a reason for hope. Even when the kids aren't alright, in some ways apparently they are alright. Go Gen Z, honestly. It's so lovely to watch you guys just openly doing and saying stuff that, when I was a teen, would've been a social death sentence.
