TV show of the Year: Andor! I was late to the party, but it was so good! (Honorable mentions: Stranger Things, Severance, Succession)

Episode that defined the year: season finale of Succession. Even when you think you have all come together to win, someone or something unexpected fucks you over.

Actor: Tom. Always Tom. sigh. Otherwise, Fiona Shaw and Andy Serkis in Andor were stupendous.

Game of the Year: Nathan Chen winning the Olympic Gold Medal

Best Month: July. Got my first royalty check for a theater company performing my play!

Something that made me Cry: My father-in-law dying

Something I want to do again next year: get a show published. Editing my next play for submission to my publishers. Fingers crossed!

A new friend this year: I adopted my new kitten Hermia, and she became the light of my life and bosom friend and companion. She is fierce and sweet and playful and I love her.

I don't even remember what I did for my birthday this past year. In 18 days I have a big one though, and I will have to do something special.

Favorite book read: The Lost Queen by Signe Pike

Bad Habbit: I already had a lot, can't think of a new one

Memorable Meal: Had a dinner party with my closest friends where I made homemade pasta, pork tenderloin in Chianti wine and rosemary sauce, and chocolate sausage for dessert. It was yummy!

Excited about: possibly going to Europe for a month or more for a writing sabbatical!

Something I learned this year: professional off-broadway producers are just as flaky and unorganized as off-off-Broadway producers, if not more so. Give me the contract to sign and I am on board to direct, if not call me when you have it ready because I cannot put my life on hold for a "maybe" repeatedly.

Place of Residence: Everything is new!!! We have a new home and I love it. The neighborhood is friendly and convenient, I have a kitchen I can bake in, and it's all ours! No more subletting to friends to make the rent!

Favorite place visited: St. Augustine, FL. We didn't travel much this year, but I love visiting the ocean and being rejuvenated by the waves. Closest thing I have to religion.

Message to past self: Just keep going. This year is going to suck a lot and there will be a high level of stress, but you will come out stronger and in a better place.

Did you keep New Year's resolutions: I don't think I made any

Created characters: In fics I created Caroline, the feisty shrink who I love in Therapy Fit for a God; In my new play I created four idiosyncratic sisters who are all based in part on myself and my sisters written for actresses who will knock them out of the park if I can make myself finish the play.

Play along my dears! This was fun and made me think. Didn't have as much time for either creating or consuming content this year, but there were definitely highlights that I had almost forgotten about. Anyway, happy to have made it out of 2022 and hoping for a more tranquil and creative 2023!

Find Someone to Carry You

Chapter 10

…….Koi Tower…….

The room looked like some kind of perverse shrine to the Yiling Patriarch. It seemed that someone had collected everything that was in the Demon Subduing Cave and brought here. Even the random scribblings that were clearly Wei Ying’s attempt to grow something other than radishes.

Lan Wangji was particularly curious as to why items that were thought to have been destroyed with Wei Ying were actually here, in a hidden room in Koi Tower. Like, the Stygian Tiger Seal and Chenqing. Two things that every account said had been on Wei Ying when he…exploded. But here they were.

At least this explains the HOW of the demonic cultivation experimentation.

Lan Wangji sensed someone behind him and whirled around, hand ready on Bichen. He saw a person, dressed all in black, with their face covered, bowing to him.

“Honorable Hanguang-Jun. I am glad to have run into you. I would advise that you take anything you want to look at later with you, because this room is about to burn to the ground.”

So I guess that’s what Nie Huaisang meant by “interesting”

Lan Wangji took the Stygian Tiger Seal, Chenqing, and the more important looking papers and shoved them into his Qiankun bag. He was about to signal that he was finished when his eyes landed on a pile of dirty clothing.

What are Wei Ying’s clothes doing here?!

Had he somehow exploded, but left everything behind?

His hands trembled as he ran his fingers over the fabric. He fought the tears welling up in his eyes. He would NOT cry. Not here, not now. He gently picked up the torn and dirty red ribbon that used to live in Wei Ying’s hair. He carefully folded it up and placed it in his Qiankun bag.

Surely he was allowed this one token of remembrance. He stood for what felt like hours, his heart breaking all over again before he was interrupted from his sad memories by the other person who he had forgotten was in the room with him.

“Hanguang-Jun, I’m sorry to rush you, but I’ve received the signal. I must begin.”

“Mn” He acknowledged and stepped back towards the door.

The person, who presumably was one of Nie Huaisang’s spies, quickly went to work placing talismans on just about everything that looked flammable.

“Once I light these, please follow me. I will make sure the no one sees you anywhere you shouldn’t be.”

Lan Wangji nodded in agreement, and watched all the talismans light the entire room into an impressive blazing fire. He was sure nothing would survive, no matter how quickly someone came to put out the fire.

“Hanguang-Jun, please follow me.”

Lan Wangji gave one last look to what was left of Wei Ying.

Goodbye Wei Ying.

You were loved.

…….Koi Tower…….

Nie Huaisang felt like his entire life was just a preparation for this performance. He felt terrible that it was necessary to hurt his friend so badly, but he needed the scream to be real. He needed all of this to be as believable as possible. He’ll apologize to Wei Ying later. Probably with alcohol.

But now, it was show time.

He let out his best hysterical wails as he ran about the room, setting off more fire talismans and fanning fires. He had to admit, the fabric hanging down from the ceiling, blazing with fire, made everything that much more dramatic.

It didn’t take long for some Jin guards to come to his rescue. Thankfully because that room was going up like dry kindling and he was, in fact, not fire retardant.

“What HAPPENED?!” Jin Guangyao squeaked running up to him. He was clearly out of sorts.

Good.

“H-He” Nie Huaisang did his best version of a panicked maiden about to pass out, and fanned himself excessively. He made sure that he darted his wide eyes back and forth quickly, to help sell the panic.

“Try to calm yourself Huaisang and tell us what happened.” Lan Xichen had followed Jin Guanyao because OF COURSE.

Nie Huaisang made a big show of taking big, deep breaths.

“He…he just…screamed and burst into fl-flames” He stuttered out while huffing loudly.

Nie Huaisang would burn the image of Jin Guanyao’s face into his mind so he could paint it later and remember it forever.

“It was just so horrible. One minute he was a person, the next his…his skin…was MELTING OFF!!” Nie Huaisang let out another loud wail and started sobbing as he collapsed on the floor.

“I can’t- I can’t breathe. I need air…” He flailed about, struggling to get up.

Lan Xichen came to his rescue, since it seemed that Jin Guanyao was distracted by, other matters, probably involved the now DEAD Wei Ying.

I’m so going to laugh about this later with Wei Ying over alcohol.

Too bad he can’t see it himself.

So good.

Okay, focus.

“I need WANGJI! Where IS he?!” He wailed in the Lan Sect Leader’s arms.

“It’ll be okay, I will help you find my brother.” Lan Xichen lead Nie Huaisang outside and towards the perimeter of the chaos that seemed to have enveloped the Lanling Jin Sect home.

His spies had done good work. There were blazing fires everywhere. People were running around in the chaos, trying to put them out, but no one seemed to really be in charge. It was like someone had kicked over the ant hill and everyone was scurrying about, not really knowing what to do.

“Hanguang-JUUUUUUUN” He pathetically wailed, like a child who had lost its mother.

That seemed to do the trick, because Lan Wangji seemed to materialize beside him. He flung himself at his friend and clung onto his outer robed like a life raft.

“It was so horrible! I can’t stop seeing it. His SKIN WAS MELTING!”

Must not laugh

Stay in character

Almost there

Do not laugh

“I can’t ever eat MEAT again! The SMELLLLLL”

“Perhaps it would be best to take him someplace quieter.” Lan Xichen looked at his brother with concern.

“Mn” Lan Wangji responded and managed to draw out Bichen despite having Nie Huaisang stuck to him like a sea barnacle.

“I CAN’T be a vegetarian. I’ll DIEEEE”

Lan Wangji managed to get them mounted on Bichen and into the air.

Once they were safely away from the chaos of Koi Tower Nie Huaisang finally dropped the act.

“You certainly created quite the…incident” Lan Wangji said with more than a hint of judgement.

“You caught the tail end of one of the best performances of my life I’ll have you know.” Nie Huaisang responded with mock hurt. “Besides, nobody got anything that they didn’t deserve in my little…incident tonight.”

Lan Wangji seemed content to spend the rest of the journey in silence, so Nie Huaisang let him. This was just the eye of the storm anyway. There would be much more drama in the near future. He expected much more yelling coming his way.

……..Qinghe…….

As Lan Wangji was landing inside the walls of the Qinghe Nie compound, one of the Nie Sect Disciples was running to meet them.

“Sect Leader Nie. Your most recent…acquisition has arrived and has been taken to the holding room. We took the liberty of beginning the…damage inspection” The disciple was clearly worried about if he was allowed to speak in front of Lan Wangji.

“Perfect! Well done. Are the other acquisitions secure?” Nie Huaisang seemed to not be bothered at all about talking in front of Lan Wangji, however he was still obviously using a code.

“Yes Sect Leader.”

“Good. Please alert the doctor. Her services will be needed.” Nie Huaisang waived his disciple away with his fan.

“Hanguang-Jun, please indulge me just a little bit longer. I do think that you will find this of great interest.”

If it ends up being some lewd piece of art I’m never speaking to Huaisang again.

A short time later, Lan Wangji found himself just inside the doorway of a room that was NOT some sort of display room. It was, in fact, living quarters. They had gone through an impressive amount of security to get to the room, which he found curious. He heard the sound of water sloshing in a bath and he REALLY wanted to know what was going on.

“Sect Leader Nie. We have finished our initial inspection. He will require the services of the doctor.”

“I figured as much. She has already been summoned.”

Lan Wangji saw a battered and scarred body being basically dragged to the bed, hanging limp between two servants. When they turned him to lay him down Lan Wangji quickly averted his eyes realizing the man was naked, but not before he caught a glimpse of familiar piercings.

What was Huaisang doing with the Koi Tower Sex Slave?

Why did Huaisang think HE’D be interested in the Koi Tower Sex Slave?!

This is too much.

Never had he been so humiliated.

Okay, that isn’t true.

How DARE Huaisang think he could tease him like Wei Ying?!

No one would ever be Wei Ying.

How DARE he?!

Lan Wangji’s blood started to boil at the thought that he would have any interest in whatever it was that the man was here for. Having lost the last of his patience with his former friend he spun to exit the room and go back to Cloud Recesses as fast as Bichen would carry him when he found himself face to face with a ghost.

“Lady Wen?”

Behind a cut (I am an old and they will always be cuts for me) for privacy reasons.

So, two weeks ago today I went to Florida and watched my Dad’s ashes be poured into concrete which was then added to large concrete balls with holes in it which, a few days later, would be dropped into the ocean to become a reef.

It was a three day affair. It was a weird affair.

My Dad died over 5 years ago and he was dying a long time before that. I made my peace with his death before he was even dead. He was a man who was always emotionally unavailable; if you loved him, it was like dumping that love into a deep dark pit. Sometimes you got some love back, but most of the time you didn’t. I don’t doubt he loved me and my siblings and my Mom. But he didn’t know how to do anything with that love and so he did nothing. It was an exhausting, depressing thing to love him.e

I don’t think, even if we’d had another 40 years, that my Dad and I would ever have become closer. We were too alike and too different in all the wrong ways. He couldn’t be who I needed him to be and I couldn’t be who he wanted me to be.

We were both who we were and I knew well before he actually died that that’s how we’d be when he finally passed. There’s a certain peace that comes from the realization and acknowledgement that you are as close as you’ll ever be with someone. That there was no growth to be had, no growth to expect. I had accepted his death before he even died. When he actually died I mourned him and then moved on. He was who he was and I am who I am and that’s the end of the story.

Which meant that this whole second memorial, where we put his ashes in ball that would eventually be a reef, was incredibly weird for me. I didn’t feel sad. I mostly felt exhausted with dealing with other people’s emotions and the incredibly long drive from the house we were staying to the place where the whole thing was happening and the fact that the whole event was a three day long process, all with a 4-year-old who, by the end, was running on fumes and having almost-meltdowns several times a day.

Don’t get me wrong, I think this is the perfect way to honor him, the perfect thing to do with his ashes. He loved the ocean and he loved scuba diving and if he’d know it was an option, I think he would have chosen it himself. And it’s not his fault, or anyone’s fault really, that it took over 5 years to actually lay him to rest. He had six children whose schedules my Mom was trying to work around. (Eventually she just said “I’m doing it in Sept. and if you want to come you’ll make it work.” Which I think she should have done several years ago but I understand why she waited so long.)

And literally in the middle of that was my birthday which most of you know was a whole Thing and I don’t feel up to getting into now. It did, however, turn out lovely thanks to Mr. Geeky, Mars (who is super obsessed with bdays at the moment so was super enthusiastic about the whole thing), and all your lovely words which made me so very happy.

On top of all this nonsense, we go to FL every year in Oct. and just hang out at the beach and relax and enjoy spending time together as a family. So we decided that it was ridiculous to spend money on two round-trip plane rides to go both in Sept. and Oct. Neither Mr. Geeky or I realized how exhausting the whole experience would be (especially since I knew I was done with my grieving) and so the first 2/3s of our trip was spent wearing ourselves thin. Having only 4 days to recover from that was not enough so we’re still trying to recover, except now we have work and school and so things have been rough. Mars had 5 meltdowns on Wed and another one yesterday.

So, anyway, this is me writing it out since I still feel weird about my not-quite-a-vacation and writing it out always helps me.

Also, I missed you all so much and I was so annoyed to not only be dealing with all that bs but also not have the energy or time to talk to y’all. You are all lovely people, your comments on my bday post made me so happy, and I love each and every one of you.

Terumah: Enthroned Upon the Cherubim

“[In the building of the Holy Ark of the Covenant,] you shall fashion two cherubim of beaten gold, and mount them at either end of the golden lid of the Ark. Make one cherub at one end, and the other cherub at the other. Use the same gold for the cherubim as you do for the lid; fasten the cherubim to the lid, so that they all become one piece. The cherubim shall have their wings spread out... their faces shall look down at the lid. ...There will I, your LORD GOD, meet with [the Israelites]...and command you concerning My Torah.”

I was floating in an immense sea of light: praising, praising, ever praising the Lord God, Hallelujah! Blessed be His Name.... My wings beat softly, my hands were palms-out-and-up, ready to give (we angels—we cherubim—give all we can to the Almighty). My heart—do I have a heart?—was beating so hard for my love of God, that it felt as though it would spring out of my chest. I was at peace, utter and ultimate peace, Shalom. I—

“Psst!”

I was jarred out of my reverie by that odd noise—no one had ever “psst” at me, before. I opened my eyes, shook my head free from the Vision in which I had been immersed. I opened my eyes, looked up, and saw—Myself. My twin. He was grinning at me: what sort of cherub grins? Cherubim are supposed to be praising, praising, ever praising the Lord. We....

“My name is Ketaniel, the ‘Child of God,’” said the twin. “Lonely here, isn’t it?”

I decided to put this upstart in his place, forthwith.

“We can’t be lonely,” I answered, “We are angels. Angels have no emotions; that would make us human, which we most decidedly are not.I would rather be celestial than mortal. Our job is—”

“I know all that,” said my simulacrum-twin, “for I was only recently born of heavenly aether, and Raphael, the Archangel-on-Duty that cosmic day, instructed me in what I can do, and not do. Still, I thought—”

“Angels do not think, hold opinions, or question,” I said.

“Yes, yes,” said Ketaniel, “I know all of that, too. Still, I had been hoping to be part of a larger flock of us—”

“Coming,” I corrected him, “The word for a group of us is ‘A Coming of Angels.’ And what’s so bad about there being just the two of us? We can certainly get along. And then, there’s the Maximum Honor—”

“—Of being God’s footstool,” responded the Other. “Yes, I know. Raphael told me. Still, that does seem a stodgy sort of duty, isn’t it?”

I was amazed at this one’s chutzpah.

“How about just doing as you are told?” I asked, not unkindly, “We angels do not question. That is for the Humans to do—not that it ever does them any good. Well, perhaps a little. But mostly not.”

“What’s wrong with questioning?” the Other questioned, “After all, I might have protested being part of a piece of furniture—this Ark of the Covenant, in particular—had I not been starstruck at my audience with Raphael. His voice is gentle, and he is so kind! All I did, therefore, was nod when he told me, ‘And you, Ketaniel, shall be part of God’s holiest object, and Israel’s proudest possession! You and another angel—”

“That would be me,” I said, beginning to soften to this upstart cherub, “And you are, indeed, correct, to a certain extent. The job we cherubim hold is to carry the prayers of Humanity to God Himself—we carry them on our backs.”

“Though we can hardly do that, anchored as we are to this Golden Box,” said Ketaniel, mournfully. “If I could only fly—”

“If you had the wings of an angel, you mean,” I grinned. After all, I thought, we will be linked together for Eternity, and so might as well get along.

“...So we must find something to do,” said Ketaniel, “just to occupy both the time and our minds—what minds we angels have, that is.”

“Should we not be reciting all of God’s ninety-nine Names?” I suggested.

He shrugged. “Might as well,” he said, “I’ll start: Elohim.”

“That is God’s attribute of Justice,” I said. “That one is easy. Here’s one for you: Adonoi.”

“God’s Mercy,” he smiled. “And now, you: ReBeSheh.”

“That is the acronym for ‘God, the Sovereign of the Universe,’” I said....

And so have the days, months, aeons passed, with the two of us exchanging Godly Names, asking one another questions of Torah, and bearing up a bit when we feel God’s Presence hovering over us. Ketaniel is a bit callow and can be obnoxious; that is the way of the world, and the World of Angels. But I am a match for him.

Which is all to the Good.

After all, we will be together, under God’s Grace, forever. We help to protect Humanity.

Road to New Beginning Tour: KUSHIDA Farewell 1/29 v. Tanahashi, NEVER 6-Man Match 1/30; 3rd New Beginning USA Show Added; NJPW & AEW Not Working Together (For Now), Jericho Joins AEW, Omega Doesn’t (Yet); Romero, Owens Stay; Naito in Costa Rica 3/30

Strong Style Story Podcast Episode 48 on Pro Wrestling Only

Strap in, this is a long one, and the second time I’m typing this out because my stupid laptop rebooted without my say-so during dinner grrrrrr.

The full lineups for the Road to the New Beginning tour have been released. The biggest bit of news here is the scheduling of KUSHIDA’s final match in NJPW. It will take place on 1/29/2019, at Tokyo Korakuen Hall, and his farewell opponent is none other than IWGP Heavyweight Champion Hiroshi Tanahashi. If you’re going to go out, may as well be against the champ. Pity it took this long to get a singles match against a heavyweight, but what can you do.

The next night in Sendai, there is a NEVER Openweight Comedy 6-Man Tag Team title match, as Togi Makabe, Toru Yano & Ryusuke Taguchi make another attempt at taking the belts from Tama Tonga, Tanga Loa & Taiji Ishimori. This show is not listed on NJPWWorld’s schedule, which is a shame as there are also two special singles matches, in which BUSHI & Shingo Takagi face off against El Desperado & Yoshinobu Kanemaru, respectively. It’s only Shingo’s 2nd singles match since signing to NJPW too. Maybe these matches will show up on tape delay.

There’s a lot more news to go so I am going to put the tour lineups at the bottom of the post.

On the English broadcast of WK13, they mentioned that a third show was going to be added to the New Beginning USA shows in late January/early February. That has now happened, with a show on 2/2/2019 at the War Memorial Auditorium in Nashville, TN. Tickets will go on sale for that on 1/15/2019, and you can see the ticket pricing scheme here. NJPW also announced they are adding additional seats to the show at the Globe Theatre on 1/30/2019 in LA, and those will also go on sale 1/15/2019.

From the onset, NJPW said that wrestlers who would come over are the ones who would not be working The New Beginning in Sapporo. We already know those lineups, and that takes out Tanahashi, Okada, Jay White, Bullet Club, Suzuki-gun and Los Ingobernables. It may seem like much, but going from those lineups, the USA shows will probably feature the IWGP US title match between Juice Robinson v. Trent Beretta, as well as possibly the previously postponed singles rematch with Hirooki Goto v. Jeff Cobb, and perhaps even the Yuji Nagata v. Tomohiro Ishii match teased at New Year Dash!! on Saturday. Stay tuned.

Earlier today, All Elite Wrestling held a press conference / rally in Jacksonville, FL, for their forthcoming debut PPV under the AEW banner, Double or Nothing, in Las Vegas, NV, on 5/25/2019. Since many of the questions about AEW involve NJPW, I’m going to answer what we know about the relationship between the two:

Not much.

In fact, yesterday there were reports that NJPW was very happy with the current relationship with Ring of Honor. For their part, Matt Jackson at this rally stated they were going to be working with Oriental Wrestling Entertainment, the Chinese promotion that took 2018 by storm, currently run by Dragon Gate co-founder CIMA, and featuring several other DG wrestlers who jumped over. Brandi Rhodes also made vague comments that they have reached out to joshi talents/promotions to work within their womens’ division. So at least in the immediate future, there is no current working relationship between All Elite Wrestling and New Japan.

As for the talents, AEW announced a bevy of them. Including, at the very end, the recently dethroned IWGP Intercontinental champion Chris Jericho. Considering AEW doesn’t start running officially until 5/25/2019, there is no reason I can think of why the rumored IWGP Heavyweight title challenge Jericho wants v. Hiroshi Tanahashi at G1 Supercard in Madison Square Garden can’t still happen. So wait and see on that.

One name noticeably absent from the announcements? Kenny Omega. So despite reports from Tokyo Sports that had more than a bit of kayfabing in it, we still really know nothing about what Kenny Omega’s next move is. It could be NJPW, it could be AEW, it could be WWE, it could be retiring and being a Twitch streamer. We’ll let you know when we do.

As I really have no interest in AEW, unless there is NJPW involvement, I won’t be reporting on them with any regularity. If you want to know more about the rally, check the interwebs as there are plenty of reports on what took place.

Just to flip the script a bit, we’ve been talking a lot about wrestlers who are leaving, maybe leaving, or retiring lately. Two wrestlers who have confirmed they are sticking around are Rocky Romero and Chase Owens. Both men tweeted out yesterday that they have signed new contracts with NJPW, so they will be part of the company for a while yet. Good for them!

An announcement that may have gotten lost in all this: NJPW announced that Tetsuya Naito will be making a rare appearance in Costa Rica on 3/30/2019, at the 5th anniversary show for Costa Rica Wrestling Embassy. CMLL’s Shigeo Okumura will be there as well, although it’s not known if they will be teaming. Naito used to team with Okumura during several of his Mexican excursions, however he also famously turned on Okumura’s “Yellow Wave” to join Los Ingobernables on an episode of CMLL Informa. And the rest is history...

Finally, last post I mentioned that I wasn’t familiar with what character was whom in My Dad Is A Heel Wrestler, in reference to the special match during the 1/21/2019 Fantasticamania show (and it was also after midnight by then). I’ve seen been informed that the match, underneath the masks and costumes, will be Kazuchika Okada & Togi Makabe v. Hiroshi Tanahashi & Ryusuke Taguchi. Should be a hoot.

Week 5 Blog 06/17/2022:

Hi Everyone, This is my 5th week working with Dr. Gannon and the Olustee Project. I am almost done with the spreadsheet with all the regiments and troops that fought the Battle of Olustee and detailed data points about each soldier that was a part of the Union Army that fought the Battle of Olustee. While I am almost done completing the spreadsheet, I am also working on the StoryMap for the 35th United States Colored Troops and the creation of the Olustee National Forrest. I will be sending Dr. Gannon the StoryMaps next week so she can tell me what to add more to the StoryMaps, like the individuals in the 35th United States Colored Troops movement and where they went during and after the Civil War and the Battle of Olustee. For the StoryMap on the creation of the Olustee National Forrest, I am using pictures of the documents with areas listed on them that were used to locate the land that the Federal Government would use to create the Olustee National Forrest. While I would think that the StoryMap of the creation of the National Forrest involves two places, Washington D.C. and Bakers County, Fl, however; there are multiple places that the documented travel from and to for the creation of the Olustee National Forrest. Documents for the design of Olustee National Forrest had to go to Tallahassee, Fl, the Floride state capital, Bakers County, Fl, where the Olustee National Forrest is located, and Washington D.C, where the records and approval were of the Olustee National Forrest are found in the National Archives. While there are more locations than I thought, I include all the places to show all the steps it took to create the Olustee National Forrest back in the 1970s. I find it interesting how many people it took for the process of creating a National Forrest while a lot of National Forrests were made in Florida during the 1970s. Overall, I am doing more work on the Olustee Project than last semester because I am the only one working on the Olustee Project with Dr. Gannon this summer semester. I am pleased with the work that I am putting into this project, and I feel that with this work, our team can move further to reach our goals for the completion of the Olustee Project when we have a monument and honor for the Union Troops that fought in the Battle of Olustee during the Civil War.

Today Reebok, in Partnership with Alabama State University (ASU) and the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), announces the recipients of the revitalized Reebok Human Rights Award, which honors extraordinary young human rights activists under 30 years of age.

This year’s winners are three incredible activists who are working to dismantle one of the greatest threats to human rights – systemic racism. The recipients are LaTonya Myers (Philadelphia) Eva Maria Lewis (Chicago) and Hernán Carvente-Martinez (New York). Each honoree will be given a $100,000 award to support their important work.

Eva Maria Lewis

Eva Maria is the Founder and Executive Director of the Free Root Operation, a non-profit organization focusing on combatting gun violence in Black and Brown communities on the south and west sides of Chicago. Free Root Operation, which Eva Maria started when she was 16, promotes access to an equitable education, food, housing, health, and other resources as solutions for violence. Eva Maria launched the first FRO initiative, Education Emancipation, as a high school senior; the program has been partners with a local public school for over four years to create “peace rooms” as a disciplinary alternative aimed at disrupting the school-to-prison pipeline present in many Black and Brown public schools. She started the Chicago Food Pairing Program in the wake of mass grocery store closures in 2020, which serves as a free grocery and supply delivery service for those who express a need, builds relationships between people on opposite sides of Chicago, and helps people feel empowered, taken care of, and deeply connected with their community. Eva Maria’s organization has served over 500 families and 2,000 individuals via food acquisition and delivery; her peace rooms have been used by over 600 students, while nearly 3,000 are benefitting from her work on a continual basis.

In 2018, Eva Maria represented the United States of America in Paris at the Human Rights Defenders Summit and she has also spoken at the United Nations and TEDxTeen in NYC. Last year she wrote a public eulogy for Breonna Taylor’s birthday with Breonna’s friends and family, which was featured in Teen Vogue. She is finishing her undergraduate degree in sociology at the University of Pennsylvania this Fall.

Hernán Carvente-Martinez

Hernán is the Founder and CEO of Healing Ninjas, Inc. a recently launched company that focuses on ensuring that mental health and healing resources become more visible and accessible to communities of color. After being incarcerated at a young age and struggling with substance abuse, gang life and mental health issues, Hernán started working at the Youth First Initiative where he led the creation of the Youth Leaders Network; engaging youth leaders from 14 states to work together to hone their leadership, advocacy and communication skills to help advance their local campaigns focused on abolishing youth prisons. His work focused on uplifting the human rights of the most marginalized youth in the U.S, those who have been incarcerated across the country in the juvenile justice system.

During the past nine years as a young organizer and entrepreneur, Hernán has advocated for impacted youth in justice campaigns, provided professional coaching and connected youth with mentors, coaches and allies, advised adult allies on how to work directly with impacted youth, and advised media outlets on how to cover youth justice issues. Hernán has set out to achieve a society where youth prisons do not exist, and young people are paid livable wages, receive the coaching and support they need to work well, as well as healing in order to thrive in everyday life.

LaTonya Myers

LaTonya, founder of the grassroots service and advocacy organization Above All Odds, is fiercely dedicated to transforming the criminal justice system, supporting returning citizens, and empowering communities that have experienced historical disinvestment and disproportionate targeting by law enforcement. She invests time, energy and financial resources into mentoring African American and LGBTQIA youth. Once incarcerated herself, LaTonya now visits prisons and jails to assist those who are currently detained, and helps returning citizens with jobs and housing. She mobilizes community members, activists, and elected officials to raise awareness of issues within the criminal legal system, and has testified before the Pennsylvania legislature, calling for probation reform legislation. LaTonya hosts community programming such as book bag drives, “welcome home” events, and the Probation Awards Ceremony, which celebrates people who are making meaningful contributions to the community while on probation and parole. In addition, LaTonya has raised over $23,000 for COVID relief, coordinating tangible and in-kind donations of goods and services such as winter coats, transportation and PPE. She has also facilitated the bailout of nearly 700 individuals being held on pre-trial confinement.

THE 2021 REEBOK HUMAN RIGHTS AWARD SUMMIT

The Reebok Human Rights Award Summit will take place virtually and feature a keynote address from activist and #MeToo founder Tarana Burke. I have heard many stories about the formation of potato chip companies, but one of the most fascinating stories involves Detroit Friends Potato Chips. I met Founder Michael "Mike" Wimberley, at the 2018 Sweets and Snacks Expo in Chicago.

Mike grew up in a family of community activists with a social conscience. His mother set up a community center in Detroit under the auspices of Friends of Detroit and Tri Counties. After the recession hit Detroit hard, many of the buildings in Detroit were abandoned and subsequently razed. There were many vacant lots, one with a half stripped mobile home, that needed attention. Michael organized community meetings and ultimately engaged a landscape designer. The soil on these downtown Detroit lots was tested and it was determined that the soil was well suited for urban farming. With the help of volunteers, lots were cleaned up, and the Friends of Detroit and Tri Counties started growing potatoes. It soon became clear that the organization could not compete on price with the larger potato farms, so they started making potato chips.

The potato chips were served in a local soup kitchen run by Friends of Detroit and Tri Counties where local underprivileged regulars often received their only meal of the day. Without any experience in the chip business and no recipe, the chips were so terrible that the regulars threw them in the garbage. A major breakthrough resulted when a friend took a trip to New York City and visited a bakery. The friend marveled at the quality of the bread and asked the baker what his secret was. The baker responded that he made bad bread, until he finally figured out a great recipe and process through experimentation. After the friend reported on what the New York City baker told her, Michael engaged three to four cooks who tried different recipes with various types of potatoes. They underwent trial and error for four years, understanding that they needed a niche, something original, as they would not have the resources to out Frito-Lay Frito Lay or other major chip companies. As the chefs experimented, the soup kitchen served as a beta testing site with close observation regarding how many of the chips were thrown into the garbage. Trash became the barometer. After four years, at Christmas 2013, they figured out the recipe and process. They then set up vendor tables at different Christmas/Holiday events and fairs to further test the chips.

Taking inspiration from the founder of Linked-In Founder, Reid Hoffman who said you need a Minimally Viable Product ("MVP") and emphasizes that entrepreneurs should start with a very thin product.

“It’s the emphasis [on] time. It’s getting out and getting in the market and learning and moving, [which are] much more important than the ego satisfaction of ‘Oh, I want to do it completely behind a cloak and then [remove] the cloak and everyone knows how wonderful and what a genius I am cause they think the product is so wonderful.’ That’s actually rarely the winning strategy. The actual winning strategy is ‘I’m moving, I’m getting out there and I’m adapting at a fast rate.' . . . Tackling those early hypotheses as soon as you can is extremely important.”

To launch their product as soon as possible, the chips were placed in wax paper in brown lunch bags to which a business cards were stapled. Michael then joined the Specialty Foods Association ("SFA") that puts on the Fancy Food Shows in both New York and San Francisco each year. A regional representative of the SFA referred Michael to the SFA Magazine which decided to do an article about the company.

A couple of days after the article appeared, Michael received an e-mail from O, the Oprah Magazine, a partnership between Oprah Winfrey and Hearst Communications, asking "Do you ship chips." After initially thinking that the e-mail was some type of practical joke, Michael sent some chips. He then received another e-mail stating "We Love Your Chips" and explaining that the chips would be under consideration for Oprah's favorite Things for 2015. The process for consideration was very rigorous with Michael explaining that it was akin to the television show The Apprentice. The employees often burned the midnight oil completing the various and lengthy requirements and after eighteen months, in December 2016, it was announced in a small blurb in O magazine as well as a 30 second video that Detroit Friends were one of Oprah's favorite things for 2016.

The company is employing people downtown and is part of the resurgence of downtown Detroit. Michael's Mom would be very proud of her son. kitchen for mentally and physically challenged. They are made by community activists in an effort to bring work,hope and dignity to our vulnerable community. Some proceeds go to maintain the soup Kitchen and to create other financially sustainable grassroots projects.

Michael is currently leveraging with the State of Michigan Department of Agriculture. See the photo of Michael and me at the display at the Sweets and Snacks Expo. The chips are currently available at a half dozen Whole Foods in the Detroit area as well as some Mom and Pop convenience stores in Houston, TX and Ft. Lauderdale, FL. Michael is currently investing steps to expand the company through, distribution, integration or strategic alliances. Michael is a dynamic person and I was really moved by his story and honored to meet my "Detroit Friend."

It was strange not being able to don the E Bunny costume that has become an annual tradition for me at our local neighborhood Easter party. Well hopefully when we reach “herd immunity!” It brought up longings and remembrances of my brother, father and now mother who are no longer here but in spirit and I feel their presence in one form or another every day! My brother tends to show up whenever I deal with a client who’s main challenge is addiction. My dad shows up whenever I make best efforts with a client who may be a little too adventurous/think daredevil cliff hanging/survival shows! And of course when I think about or see butterflies, something of beauty or merely when my girlfriend bakes cookies, I am reminded of the tenderness and unconditional love of my mom. There were times throughout the holy week when I felt sadness or loneliness which is not uncommon, but it has now washed past me and turned into a feeling of being grounded, safe and peaceful. We all experience ranges of emotions dealing with family members alive or in Spirit and so we’ll dedicate this month of TGIW newsletters to family.

Emor: The Blasphemer Speaks

“A certain man came out among the Israelites, one whose mother was Israelite and whose father was Egyptian. And the man fought with another man in the camp, who was pure Israelite. The half-breed cursed, using the Name of GOD blasphemously. They brought him before Moses. The half-breed’s mother’s name was Shulamith bat Dibri, of the Tribe of Dan. The Israelite Peace Officers placed the half-breed under guard, until the LORD would clarify His decision to them, regarding the blasphemous half-breed.

“And the Lord spoke unto Moses, saying, ‘Take the blasphemer outside the camp, and let all who heard him curse lay their hands on his head. And then, let the entire Community stone him to death.

“And God said to Moses, ‘To the Israelite people speak thusly: “Anyone who curses his God shall be guilty…and shall be put to death.”’ …And they took the half-breed, the blasphemer, outside the camp, and threw stones at him until he died. The Israelites did as the Lord had commanded Moses. And the nation had peace.”

--Lev. 24: 10-14, 23 (translation mine)

I, the Stranger, walked through the desert night and the chilly air, on my way to the camp of the Israelites. A silver slipper of a moon shone above, and the sandy path glowed under its pallid light. I thought of Sefkhet, the Egyptian moon-goddess—having lived in Egypt for about four hundred years, many of us were familiar with their gods. She was deity of the stars and of time; surely she would help our people in their struggles through the wilderness. For, truly, the Wilderness kills its inhabitants; it saps their strength, and steals their very soul.

Moses was growing old; it was difficult for him to go out and to come in. His brother Aaron was still grieving the loss of his two boys, Nadav and Avihu, who had been taken from him so suddenly. He offered the sacrifices, yes; but he did them in a mechanical fashion; there was no passion, much less spirituality, in it. There was still Miriam, the eldest, and most enthusiastic for love of God and of leadership—but she was a mere woman, and most of the men would never listen to her.

I trudged through the Wilderness, alone with my thoughts of gods and men. But then, I suddenly saw him out of the corner of my eye—a thin figure, almost lost in the shadows, racing about with such speed that I found him difficult to track. The darkness of the desert night did not help.

Was he friend or foe? I asked myself, and my hand tightened on the handle of the bronze dagger which I carried.

At last, the figure slowed down somewhat, and, heart in my mouth, I hailed him, there amid the wilderness gloom.

“You there, friend,” I began, “Who and what are you, and from where do you hail? Come closer, slowly, or I will skewer you on my blade.”

The figure looked at me directly; a ray of moonlight lit up his face. I shrank back, beholding a visage so tragic and full of horror. I wished I had let him go his way in peace—though I doubted whether peace could ever come to any creature who looked so grievously saddened. Still, he advanced slowly towards me, making no sound. I drew my knife, holding it so that the moonlight reflected off the blade.

“Come forward, holding your empty hands before you,” I commanded, “for I do not like either your looks or manners.”

The spectre threw back his head and laughed—such maddened, screaming laughter as I had never before heard in my life.Nor did I wish to ever hear it again. He seemed to be laughing and crying, both together.

“You cannot hurt me, Mortal,” he said, “for I am—you must believe me!— a suffering spirit—and I am (here he grinned, like a long-dead skull) I am already dead.”

Dead? I wondered, and, as though it had a mind of its own, my knife slid back into its belt-sheath. My hands were cold; I began to tremble all over.

“If you are, as you say, dead,” I said to him—or it—“How comest it that you are alive, and wandering the earth? Why are you not in Sheol, the Place of Silence, where all the spirits of the dead go, whether killed in battle, or dying, full of years, within their tents?”

The spectre stopped, considered my question, and answered me: “I am a wandering spirit, doomed to the flames of Hell—yes, such a place exists!—whose lord, Azazel, commands us to ascend to the Upper World every evening. Here, we gather twigs and branches to stoke its flames. I never rest: by day, I suffer all the torments of Hell, and, by night, I rush about and gather twigs, until the first cock-crow.”

“What was your crime, O Spirit who lived and is now dead?” I asked him, “And why did you go to Hell and not Sheol?”

“I am he of whom you have heard,” said the Spirit, grimly. “I am the spirit of the Egyptian-Hebrew half-breed. They accused me of cursing another man, most blasphemously, in the Name of God. Therefore, both God and Moses decreed that I should die by stoning.”

“That is a gruesome death,” I commiserated.

He nodded. “It is horrific,” he agreed, “I still can feel the rocks hitting my innocent flesh. I did not deserve it. It happened during a fight. My Israelite foe had pushed and insulted me—what was I to do, except strike him, to save my honor? More: the coward was calling out to his brothers and friends to come and hurt me further.”

“That is not what I heard,” I answered, “for I have read the text of your hearing and trial.”

“It is false,” said the spirit, “and I believe that it was altered, to preserve the honor of Israel, and intending to show why a full Israelite is both stronger and more upright than a blasphemous half-breed.”

He began to cry. “What crime did I commit, save that of being born to an Egyptian man and an Israelite woman? Is there no place for me among the people of Israel? All my life I have had to deal with prejudice. Even on my day of death, my dearest friend Shemura bat Elitsafan, a Danite like myself, were planning to marry.”

“Did her family accept you?” I asked, my heart opening up to this unfortunate spirit.

The Spirit shook his head. “No,” he said, “for they said, ‘Away with you, Half-breed! Our daughter will never have bastard children with you. Go and marry your own kind—go back to Egypt!” The tears rolled down his bony cheeks, from eyes that glowed like fire in the desert darkness. “How can I return to Egypt? It is not my home. I have lived all of my life among my people, Israel.”

“Can such prejudice exist among a people such as ours, who were persecuted for four hundred years in Egyptian slavery?” I asked.

“My time in Hell has made me many friends—desperate victims like myself,” said the spirit, gnashing his teeth, “and I have learned that such hatred among people is not confined to Israel. Everywhere, it seems, humanity finds a reason to gossip, and even attack, those who are different.”

“Will this ever change, or is it in Man’s nature to hate?” I asked, “How can we stop it?”

He stared at me—such a gaze as froze my soul. “My time is done on earth, Stranger,” he said, sadly, “but you are still alive. You can make a difference.Begin, NOW.”

And he vanished, leaving me here, with a mission to perform. Will you join me, Friend?

What is a Letter of Protection or Medical Bills Lien?

If you have sustained the unfortunately circumstances of having been in an accident, you may have medical bills. After you receive medical services, they will usually send you a bill for the services. These medical bills can be astronomical. One of my clients have medical bills upwards of $90,000.00. As a car accident lawyer, I routinely guide clients through the process.

Most of the time I can contact your local medical provider and request a letter of protection or lien on your car accident case. As an Attorney, if a Doctor sends me a lien and the case settles, as per Bar rules I am required to satisfy the balance with the provider before disbursement to my client. Sometimes this entails negotiating with the provider on the amount of the bill.

Occasionally, I am able to negotiate amount of bills with the doctor. I have seen as much as a %80 decrease in medical bills due to negotiations. Though I am not always able to obtain this sort of decrease in medical billing it is usually due to the amount of the bills, the amount of the settlement in relation to the bills and other contributing factors.

A medical bill lien or letter of protection can be placed on your settlement. In other words, they essentially put your bills on hold until the case settles. Once the case settles we then negotiate the medical bill and pay the bill out of the settlement at the settlement statement signing.
