I've watched a lot of dinosaur shit recently and this is probably a hot take but idrc
If the indoraptor and indominus Rex were treated better and loved for, more then half the shit would not have happened in the movies.
That being said, give them to me. I will give them the true love and care they deserve
#this is no way a introduction to the jurassic park fandom#i just cant stop thinking about it#and you guys get my brain juice#BUT SERIOUSLY#idgaf how many people they killed#shit happens when you torture a living breathing animal#jurrasic world#jurassic park

Hi, my name is Kat! This is my second account. I lost access to my original one, and created this one back in 2022. I post about all sorts of fandoms, and reblog a bunch of random posts. I make original content too sometimes. I’m a fanfic writer, and I also draw occasionally as well. I hope we can get along!

An Introduction to me~!
Hey there! You can call me Littleziki or just Ziki, I'm not picky. Just a heads up, I'm an adult, so I'd rather hang with fellow grown-ups. I'm all ears for questions and comments – I enjoy chatting with folks, even though I can be a bit shy to kick things off. I also love writing stories and drawing with my partner, going overboard with world building in all the right ways. Expect chaotic posting and me still learning to tag things ✨️
🔥 You can find everything OC wise over at @rightrounds-corner 🔥
Fandoms I hyperfixate on:
◇ Transformers [TFA, TFP, IDW, Cyberverse, Bay/Knight, etc.]
◇ Furry
◇ Silent Hill
◇ Jurassic Park/World
◇ General horror themes
Other things I enjoy:
◇ Shipping; CanonxCanon, CanonxOC, OCxOC you name it
◇ Memes; I can't get away without giggles
◇ Headcanons; I'm a sucker for anything that adds to an overall story
◇ AUs; Let's take these characters and put them somewhere else
Common tags you may see:
#Zikiarts // Any personal art of mine!
#Zikiwrites // Any writing I've done!
#Zikirambles // Mostly just random thoughts or posts!
⚠️ I'm still in the process of formatting this page and will eventually go through everything and fix any tagging issues ⚠️

Taking your word for it re fanfiction asks, so: 1, 7, 9 (for your Hostel fic that deserves more love), 10 (again Hostel), 17, 21, 25, 27, 28, 36, 41, 44, 45, 47, 48, 49. Your made up title to write a summary for is "i need no introduction (welcome to the greatest show)" from skins by the Haunting, which I have been listening to on repeat over the past few days.
Thank you for asking all of these ❤️ and also for making me discover that song because it is so fucking good!!!
1)Since I can remember! At toddler age and maybe even a bit before, my mom would let me and the siblings draw all over these little blank picture books she would staple together. She would then ask what the story was about so she could write it down on each page, and I was already making up new endings to whatever media I could understand like Bug's Life, Jurassic Park, PBS kids shows. If that doesn't count as fanfic though– then I seriously buckled down to write my first one when I was 10, with pencil and paper, and then 22 for actually finishing one and posting it on AO3
7) anytime after 9pm
9) oh fuck that's a tough one, I'd say in Jagten it's the parts with Paxton stumbling around the Elite Hunting Clubs killing floor, because in the movie that's one of my favorite scenes where Paxton calls Natalya a bitch and then she's like, 'they paid me a lot of money for you. That makes you my bitch.' Just getting to write her seeing his shock and disgust and fear was fun as hell.
10) I was going to actually go all the way up to some plotline where she does kill him (since Paxton is killed in the Hostel universe I figured Natalya becoming a hunter to do the honors instead would've been so badass of her, despite Paxton being a favorite in his own right he's just very killable), but then I figured it'd be far better to start things off sort of where they began with the fic. Natalya and Paxton facing each other down except this time the resolution is up in the air, and Paxton has no idea that she's coming for him.
17) The girl, she made a deal, he remembers it now, to save the ghosts she'd come to see as friends, as more parents than her own, sacrificing herself to a crude entity of booze, sex, and filth;
beetlejuicebeetlejuicebeetlejuice.
21) If we are talking about outside of AO3 then that would be god, this would be a lot of people both within AO3 and outside of AO3, hm, I really admire this one author who wouldn't you know shares the same name as you! All jokes aside, so much of the fics I've been writing and making lately have been directly inspired by your writing and so I can't help but admire the fuck out of the absolute range of your writing and the ability you have to tackle so many different styles and characters!
25) Yes! Although I can't give any specific examples, I just know I have, and it's usually when writing super hopeful bits after writing a bunch of incredibly harrowing sequences.
27) I make outlines! They're typically very long too and constantly get changed around and shifted and even deleted and rewritten many times. The outline for pretty boy is 40k on any given day and most of that will not actually be what's finally written it's just excerpts and scenes that don't quite work but pieces of them could be stitched together for something better
28) There isn't exactly anything I'm doing super different now then when I first started! But I wish I'd known to never touch general fandom Tumblr or Twitter or social media (and especially Discord Servers) with a ten foot pole when I started posting, that'll destroy your motivation to write faster than anything, not to mention it gets in your head about characterization and whatever else; like just write!! Just write and don't look at what other people are saying because it is not worth it unless they're fellow authors you have a rapport with
36) Selfcest-Daddy-Son Carnival Ride of Grooming and Sexual Battery from Fucking Hell; Oh and don't forget the maybe-baby! (not sure if that's the spoiler that questions asking for but dfghhjjj)
41) Probably Natalya from Hostel and Natália from 3% in an unfinished wip but she's not exactly a minor character imo, just under appreciated
44) (You fight, you rip into him, you eat him alive, fangs sunk through the muscle of lips, colonel's cum, corporal's blood swapped between you, ouroboros, you—)
45) Sheer mental illness, literally nothing else makes me write 30k in two weeks more than a sudden burst of energy and nigh delusional thinking which inevitably leads to a cycle of crashing and burning but fuck it we ball nothing else gets me clearing out those wips faster. That and one of the core elements of experiential therapy emphasizes learning to express through writing so that definitely keeps me going too since the more I write the more I can take with me to a session even if the content isn't relevant, it's all about processing a vast array of situations and emotions and intrusive thoughts through playing with little figures in the sandbox of a word document.
47) "i need no introduction (welcome to the greatest show)" this is going to be such a boring answer but for a title like this nothing better comes to mind then that idea you mentioned about Recom Jake being captured by the Na'vi. Just something about how he'd be putting on his best performance for them, all Loki stuck in a glass cage style or something, knowing oJake is freaked the hell out by him and then everything to do with Spider would be such a fucking mess. And good God that song is a banger!! (I am now listening to it on repeat as well while writing haha) I'm notoriously shit with creating summaries on the spot so apologies for not being able to make one up :'')
48) Imprisonment. Bottom line, I don't know if that's a trope per se? But a character, specifically the protagonist or the biggest baddie of the fandom getting mind-breaked in a cell I pretty much write for every fandom I have ever been in and probably will continue to do so.
49) Warrior Cats Truth or Dare on FFnet, it was a crackfic that had me dying laughing as a kid I remember reading it every night before bed in elementary school. Very fun, and it is why I love a good crackfic to this day

Name: Laura Age:25+ Timezone: GMT E-mail: [email protected] Hello one and hello all. I have been on the role play scene for a very long time now. Too long, more then likely, but that is besides the point. The point here is that I am in it for some new partners. I have some fandom's that I am hoping for, but I always enjoy a good old original. I am in my mid twenties and am looking for a partner who is at least 21+ M/F, M// I prefer not to double but side characters are my love, and I would prefer any doubling to be side characters who become more. I adore romance and smut, but they should not and will not be the focus of a plot. Also I will not write underage characters... Young characters will be aged up. Slice of life is a no for me. Fandom's: The fandom's I am currently interested in, and the characters I would like to play Supernatural Dean/OC Female - I have a plot Harry Potter Draco/Hermione. Draco/Harry Ginny/Riddle The Dresden Files Someone please be the Karin Murphy to my Harry Dresden. James Bond 00Q. I need a Q to my Bond. Craving this badly. Hell, I will even take Alec to my Bond... or maybe all three... Or perhaps Bond against one of the villains? World of Warcraft I love the world and the lore. Wheel of Time Aes Sedai and Warder? Stranger Thing Jonathan/Steve Jurassic Park The Hunger Games (OC'S only! I have a female career tribute!) Originals: Original plots and wants Sci-fi - Something original Fantasy - Urban. The Craft, Charmed. Magic in the modern world. High Fantasy - Its been an age. Adventure - Think Indiana Jones Romance... Because I love it. My Assasin angel needs a partner on the run (Female) My psychic male cop needs a partner (male only) My female stripper needs to meet a vampire (male) The Important Bits I am in my late twenties and as such, I would prefer if you were over twenty-one. Absolutely no one under the age of 18, however. Just no, It does not work for me, and it makes me feel odd. On the subject of smut, yes I am cool with it, but I can take it or leave it, but I refuse to smut right away. I will not in any way shape or form write rape. I am comfortable with a verity of kinks, and my limits are the common ones. M/F, M// Blood, guts and Gore do not bother me. Bring on the torture. Any 'Hi, wanna rp?' Will be ignored. As will anyone who says they will rp anything. I will attempt to give at least one post a day of two paragra)phs, if not, every other day. Life has gotten a bit messy as of late (Breast cancer at 30 does that to you.... Introductions will be more. Lazy Lit, if you want to be picky. Please don't just vanish... Its reaaaaaaaly annoying. I only RP via e-mail which is [email protected] Hope to hear from you soon. Have a nice day! Laura

Congratulations, everyone! This past week we reached the rare episode I physically could not complete, and we actually just skipped it and moved on to the next episode. So with that said, click keep reading to see reviews of "Bounty Hunters", the Zillo Beast arc, "Senate Spy", and the first three episodes of the Geonosis arc:
"Bounty Hunters" (2x17)
So, I love how the episode starts out with Anakin and Obi-Wan (both of them important military figures with thousands - perhaps tens of thousands - of soldiers under their command) going off to investigate the disappearance of a medical station full of injured clones. Spoiler alert, the episode never really clears up the mystery - or rather, it briefly implies all those injured clones are dead before getting on to the real story at hand, a... redux of Seven Samurai! I have to admit, I found this a bit repetitive at first, but that's mostly because I recently watched The Mandalorian's Seven Samurai redux. I love remixes of the Kurosawa classic, but twice in a month is a little much.
Anyway, once you forget about the clones as the writers so clearly want you to, the episode isn't bad. Felucia is just really pretty, and the story itself is executed passably well. Obi-Wan is starting to show the cracks, by the way - his reference to defending people who won't defend themselves is...telling. Anyway, the bounty hunters are so anodyne that I forgot their names almost immediately after viewing the episode. Hondo was, as always, a ridiculous villain. That's all for the good, honestly, because thus far TCW is not very good when it's trying to tell serious stories. The story is neatly wrapped up with Hondo cutting his losses, and Obi-Wan and his children catch a ride off Felucia with the bounty hunters.
Lastly, can I say how disappointed I am that no one in fandom has seen fit to write Obi-Wan Kenobi/Sugi FWB? C'mon guys, that feels like a slam-dunk right there!
"The Zillo Beast" (2x18)
It's a Godzilla homage, or maybe King Kong? Either way, it's a Palpatine and Anakin episode, and like all Palpatine and Anakin episodes it mostly serves the purpose of:
a) showing how horribly evil Palpatine is
b) how little power the Jedi have to counter his goals
c) Anakin is falling to the Dark Side and it's scary
a) and b) are both reasonably good storytelling goals, but I wish they were integrated more cohesively into the plot. Like Cade Bane and the holocron arc, limiting these stories to little episodic islands is a bit amateur for the writing team. Personally, I feel like c) is a lost cause, but that's basically the fault of George Lucas's bad pacing issues. Dude had Anakin cross his moral event horizon less than halfway through the Prequel trilogy, and nothing anyone has tried has been able to salvage the character.
"The Zillo Beast Returns" (2x19)
And the inevitable follow-up to Palpatine's decisions. To be honest, the writers hewed a little too closely to the plot of Godzilla/King Kong/Jurassic Park - I found this episode to be very depressing due to the tragic death of the Zillo Beast, which is, after all, just an innocent animal being tormented for Evil Science.
"Senate Spy" (2x04)
And this right here was the first episode we went ahead and skipped! That's right, I finally found an episode so awful I couldn't bear to watch it even as background noise. Anidala-focused? Check! Anakin being a teenage boy jealous of his girl's prior hookups? *barf* Check! The Jedi conducting an intelligence mission on a Senator of "the Banking Clans", using another Senator as an operative? Oh Lordy, check! Padme, a Senator of the Republic, going to Cato Neimodia, to observe another Senator leads negotiations with the Trade Federation, a group the Republic is currently at war with? Furthermore, a group that hates Padme's guts for her successful expulsion of their invasion from her planet ten years before???
Fuck my life, CHECK. My friends graciously assented to us moving on the next episode, because I just could not take this mess.
"Landing at Point Rain" (2x05)
I call this the "saving private ryan episode", and I think that fits. I don't necessarily think there's anything terrible about the episode - it's all pretty much action, start to finish - but it's not really excellent either, if that makes sense. Mostly I just like looking at the nose art and different clone trooper armor styles in this episode. Also amazed that we have a scene of the GAR literally flame-throwing the native species of the planet, because as we all know, that's totally suitable for a kids' show.
"Weapons Factory" (2x06)
And it's time for another Luminara episode!!!! Guys, I love her, even though I don't feel she's used very well in this episode. Also the first introduction of Barriss, who I also love. This was actually a really great Ahsoka episode, at least in my opinion, and I don't think we've seen too many of those so far. The mission is one that actually makes sense (I mean, for a certain value of sense, anyway) for two Padawans to be on, and it's good to see Ahsoka interact with someone on the same level as her. Anakin's story... again, i just feel like they're shoe-horning in his Inevitable Fall to the Dark Side at every possible instant, which means that Luminara has to serve as an Moral Lesson, which means that she acts sort of weird from a character perspective in order to provide a foil to Anakin's behavior. It lacks verisimilitude.
"Legacy of Terror" (2x07)
And it's time for the zombie episode! I am not fond of horror as a genre, so my eye is untutored, but I think this episode was actually reasonably good? Luminara's characterization reverts to a more naturalistic course since the story take precedence over the thematic message in this episode. We also get to see Obi-Wan Kenobi, the most annoying fucking friend/older brother in the galaxy. The little defeated sigh Anakin releases before stating "I think the nose" just says multitudes about their relationship over the years.
And that's it for this batch of episodes. I'll be back in a day or two to complete my viewing of the final episode of the Geonosis arc, a few one-off episodes, and then the TCW arc that actually made me quit watching the series the first time around.

Looking for Fandom or Original based RP
Name: Ceph Age: 18 Time Zone: Mountain Time (UTC -6:00) Main Fandoms: Invader Zim, Monster in Paris, Creepypasta, Undertale, Borderlands, Overwatch, Black Butler, Mass Effect, Inuyasha, Kamisama Hajimemashita, Pokemon, Homestuck, Problem Sleuth, Marvel, and DC
Intro: I have finally graduated high school, and to celebrate I have decided that it would be best for me to get back into roleplaying so I can keep my brain up and running while I take a break from school for a year; reach out to people and see if I can get something started again. School had been keeping me busy and my old partners all kinda packed up and bounced due to my lack of responses– which I totally understand– seeing all of that is behind me now however, I’m hoping that I can finally keep up with things. So- let’s start with an introduction shall we? My name is Ceph, I am 18 years old and have had over 11 years of practice with role playing. Ceph isn’t the only name I go by of course, so if that isn’t to your liking I have nicknames you can use; my friends like to call me Squid or Shell, while online I’m known by “Illustrative Cephalopod” to all of my 2 followers. I know, impressive… I’m pretty sure those are just friends too… I don’t run a blog by the way, I run an art account on the much loved but also very hated Deviantart. Where there is talent and cringe in every corner. I have a Tumblr too– but anyways, ignoring that, I’m going to go back to the point of this since I don’t want to bore you to death. I am looking for both fandom and original roleplays. Fandoms including the main ones listed above, and the others that I am into listed below along with the rules. Those will be OC/Canon pairings while Original will be– surprised– oc/oc pairings. I know people don’t really like reading paragraphs all too much since they just want the rambler to get to the point, so let’s start with the rules:
RULES: Style: I am not picky with this, in fact I am known as a Mirror. You wanna write a 4 page novel per response, I will do my best to match it. Want simple dialogue, I will gladly match your style. I have done many roles played in the past and both can be extremely fun and descriptive at times. So really it’s just based on which do you prefer: fast responses or a slower ones? Grammar: I mess up every now and then, nobody’s perfect, so I don’t expect you to be. Just no text talk unless it’s OOC and do try your best. I know some people struggle with typing in general. Smut: I don’t like smut without a plot, so don’t come to me planning to create a plot based around smut unless you are able to talk me into it. I can promise the wait will be worth it since I have been writing smut for years, still a virgin though so I may have a few things off, but I do go into detail if you wish me to. Other than that I will fade to black if you have no interest in it. I don’t have a lot of restrictions with smut, it’s writing not reality. Some shit i’d punch people for in real life but over writing it’s just better to stay a fantasy. Pairings/Romance: I don’t do yaoi. I have had terrible experiences with it in the past and do not want to try it again, so don’t message me about it unless you know you can talk me into a realistic relationship between two men that aren’t the usual twinks. F/F I will discuss, but I prefer and focus around M/F pairings. I’ve been writing them since I was a kid so I am most experienced with that.
Gore: Lmao, I’m a horror fan so I could care less about how much detail you put into it. If you wish for me to chill on the gore, I will gladly do so. OOC: This is required. I love talking to you guys out of roleplays and it really helps keep things going. Plus it makes things less awkward and allows us to understand one another’s situations more. Double-up: In fandoms, I expect to double up. Which means I play your oc’s love interest and you play my oc’s love interest. As for how many characters can be in it, I love playing a lot of characters so I could care less how many love interests or characters are put into it in the first place. Such as instead of a main character there are multiple main characters. I love making things combine at one point too, like make everything fit like a puzzle piece.
FANDOMS: AU worlds are totally fine with me as long as the characters don’t really change. Even crossovers, it’s always fun bringing in multiple characters. Shows: Steven Universe (Male & Female gem AU) ★ American Dragon ★ Invader Zim ★★★ Danny Phantom ★ The Batman ★ Transformers Prime ★★ Transformers ★★ TMNT ★ Movies: Any Disney Movie ★

[Recap] READY PLAYER ONE Serves up Adventure, Action, and Horror Cameos Aplenty!
Steven Spielberg set another adventure in motion with his slick adaptation of Ernest Cline’s 2011 novel, Ready Player One. Fans of Cline’s love letter to the 1980s will no doubt be searching the screen for their favorite pop-culture references. Many from the beloved book made their way to the big screen, but some of the additions may surprise you.
Our hero, Wade Watts, shows us how hard life can be in the year 2044. Watts is better known as Parzival in the virtual world The Oasis, which he escapes to whenever possible. While there, he competes amongst other Gunters (egg hunters) in Anorak’s Quest. This impossible treasure hunt would leave the winner holding a fortune and wielding immense power.
Ready Player One has a buried moral to its story about the dangers of too much escapism, but the film heralds Spielberg’s return to adventure, which offers the greatest escape from reality. The film is exciting and entertaining, particularly for the nostalgia junkies of the modern age. Horror fans will also be surprised by just how many of their favorite fiends found their way into the film.
Classic Horror Icons
During the introduction to The Doom Planet, eagle-eyed fans may notice Freddy Kruger from A Nightmare on Elm Street. Kruger’s unmistakable hat and glove are silhouetted briefly before being defeated by an unknown Gunter. Before the scene ends Jason Voorhees of the Friday the 13th franchise is front and center, wielding his signature machete and wearing his hockey mask.
The first challenge facing Parzival is a racing challenge. The one car that stands out amongst the rest is the 1958 red and white Plymouth Fury. She which can be spotted in several shots before the race begins. Christine is a cherry-red beacon of color in a sea of silver and bluish vehicles, but we lose sight of her once the race begins.
Creature Features
Two of the greatest foes that appear in the race scene are King Kong and the T-Rex from Jurassic Park. It’s an interesting juxtaposition to see a Tyrannosaurus trouncing through city streets. Meanwhile, Kong was not about to let any Gunters cross the finish line. On the whole, the scene can be a bit chaotic, but it’s a thrill to see these giant foes crushing through their opponents.
Parzival gains celebrity status in The Oasis after figuring out how to bypass Kong. After his win it seems everyone wants a photo with him. As it happens, Beetlejuice alerts everyone to Parzival’s presence as he enters a museum to do research for the quest. Moments later, a lumbering genie pulls Parzival aside to scold him for being so naive. Before Parzival can react, an enormous chestburster from Alien rips through the genie’s chest only to reveal one of Parzival’s acquaintances in disguise.
Come Play With Us
One of the impossible challenges facing Parzival relies so heavily on the film The Shining that you’ll momentarily think someone switched reels on you. The segment is so well done it will leave viewers longing for more twisted fandom collisions. My favorite segment in Ready Player One because it is unexpected, humorous, and thrilling to watch unfold.
While getting ready for a night out, our hero gives us a quick nod to Michael Jackson’s famous red leather outfit worn in the Thriller music video. It’s one of several ensembles Parzival dons before choosing to go the Buckaroo Bonzai route instead.
Throughout the film we see that characters can choose to take on different forms or change their appearances. During the battle for Castle Anorak we see one character choose to enter The Oasis as The Iron Giant. However, kaiju fans may be more excited to see Mechagodzilla wreak havoc during battle.
During this melee we are introduced to some unorthodox weaponry. A grenade in the form of Dustbrain, the spongy, toy mummy head from Madballs, is an amusing surprise. Still, one of the best cameos of all is Chucky, everyone’s favorite Good Guy Doll from Child’s Play. Chucky is armed and laughs maniacally while slashing at his enemies. The crowd erupted into laughter at the expenditure of the one and only F-Bomb when an unsuspecting victim shouts, “IT’S FUCKING CHUCKY!”
Honorable Mentions
There are, of course, honorable mentions to be made for quick shots of Gremlins graffiti on a building and the Aliens marine ship, Sulaco being shown in toy form. The Gunters also use a Martian ship from War of the Worlds as a rendezvous point. One character has a Rocky Horror Picture Show patch on her vest when not inside The Oasis. There are also zombie-like ghosts who dance in a style eerily similar to that of the ghosts in The Haunted Mansion attraction in Walt Disney World. Beyond that, The Fly remake is mentioned and Spawn can be spotted as an avatar during one of the many battle scenes on The Doom Planet.
How many of these horror cameos did you spot while watching Ready Player One? Let us know in the comments and sound off in our Facebook Group!

Blog Post #3
Thursday, November 30th, 2017
When reflecting on chapter 7, I decided to analyze my own media reception. Media reception is “the study of audience interpretation of media that occurs in specific contexts” (Sullivan, p.162). The textbook mentions that “Television continues to be the most important and widely used media technology in the domestic context” (Sullivan, p.171). I am in agreeance with this statement because even though older analog television models have been updated and eventually phased out by sleeker, digital T.V.’s, this classic form of technology continues to be a staple device in my home. Over time; my family has swapped out desktop computers for laptops and tablets, and landline telephones phones for smartphones. But our television has remained in the same location, no matter what. It has become an unspoken tradition amongst my family, to gather in the living room around the television after Sunday dinners, even if we are not fully engaged in what is being broadcasted on the screen.
The textbook later continues that “the introduction of new media technologies has not fundamentally altered the amount of television use in the home” (Sullivan,p.171). I am not in total agreeance with this statement. In recent years, the internet has interfered with the rate at which users consume broadcasted television content. In seminar, we were asked what digital platform we used most to consume our media, our answers were unanimous; smartphones and laptops. Streaming and social media platforms such as Netflix, YouTube, and Facebook, have the ability to satisfy our viewing needs all in one channel. By 2017, viewers have ultimately transformed into the producers. Convenience has become a key factor in media consumption as viewers opt for on-demand content over limiting scheduled content.
youtube
How The Internet Is Killing Television (Short Film)
I found this video to be very interesting. Although the textbook raises very good points on the evolution of television, I believe that a lot has changed in the past 5 years. As an individual that was raised and continues to live amidst a digital revolution, I am often unaware to the ways that the internet has altered my lifestyle. I have become so attracted by the perks of the internet that I will change my habits. For example, when moving into my student home; I opted to pay a for a monthly Netflix subscription and stream programs, as opposed to paying for additional cable.
This is not to say that the television is a dying fad. This chapter suggests that we are creatures of habit. The television has proven to be a source of communication amongst my friends and family. In my home, it has always been a rule that we were not to argue or get upset over a luxury that was meant to provide entertainment. Instead, whoever turned on the television, was in control of what everyone watches until their program was finished. This may pose an issue in other families, but for us, this often acted as a bonding experience as it was a chance to get to know a little bit more about what the person in control is interested in. Because I live in a large family of males and females ranging in the ages of 79 to 15, it has provided me with a broader spectrum of popular culture and media content. I would probably not have any knowledge of subjects like politics, cars, or even soap operas if I was simply scrolling through my Facebook timeline that only consists of content that my friends are interested in.
Ultimately context plays a major role in how we view media. This term refers to “both a place and a web of interpersonal relationships and interactions within the time and space” (Sullivan, 163). There are many situations where I opt to put down my laptop and cellphone, in order to watch television. This term also relates to the article, The Influences of Sports Viewing Conditions on Enjoyment from Watching Televised Sports: An Analysis of the FIFA World Cup Audiences in Theater vs. Home (Kim et al. 2016). Going to the movie theatre has always been an exciting event for me. There is something about the atmosphere of sitting in a large dark room, to watch a film for the first time on the big screen, that made the production so much more special. Today, it is much easier and cheaper to stream a film from home, but that just doesn’t give the same feeling. Kim et al., explain that atmosphere, suspense, and togetherness as factors that compel sports audience members to choose between the theatre and at-home television. They concluded, “Such intensified patriotism involving national competitions then should influence the levels of suspense and the overall evaluations of the viewing experiences” (Kim et al, p.406) Although I have never experienced watching sports at a movie theatre, I have gone to large social events such as Jurassic Park at Maple Leaf Square to watch the Toronto Raptors playoffs game. For the entire season, I chose to watch the games within the comfort of my own home with friends and family; which is an activity that I enjoyed because of the intimacy. Just before the playoffs, I went to a local bar to watch the semi-finals, where I experienced an atmosphere that I had never experienced before. When the game began, patrons kept to themselves; but, as the game continued, I watched as everyone laughed and cheered together in for the Raptors. By the end of the game, the entire bar was ecstatic! I became so consumed with excitement; more for the crowd than the game, that I became adamant on going to Maple Leaf Square.
youtube
Toronto Raptors Pre'Historic Game 7 @ Jurassic Park
Although I enjoyed my experience and intend on visiting Jurassic Park again, this is not an event that I will take part in during every Raptors game. This is because attending Jurassic Park did not take away from my experience of viewing the game at home. I still enjoy watching sports with friends, family, or even alone indoors for the reasons that I cannot satisfy from attending Maple Leaf Square.
The concept of audiences as fans can be applied outside of sports too. Chapter 8 in the textbook defines fans as audiences that “…are deeply engaged in their favorite media texts. Fans often reinterpret media content and create their own cultural productions in response” (Sullivan, p. 193). The first personal experience that comes to mind is Walt Disney World in Florida. Growing up, I was a super fan of the Disney franchise. For my 10th birthday, my parents surprised me with a trip to Disney World. Although I was aware that the movies were fiction, I was still so infatuated with the characters and storylines. Our first stop at Disney was a brunch in the Magic Kingdom featuring some of my favorite (and not so favorite) characters from the movie Cinderella. At one point in the dinner, two young women dressed as Cinderella’s evil marks-sisters stopped at our table to make conversation. While in character, the two step-sisters continued to make snarky comments about Cinderella. At one point, I became so offended by their comments that I began to defend Cinderella and even made a few jokingly snide remarks towards the two step-sisters. After a few more minutes of banter, the sisters made their way to other tables where I could overhear other children engaging in the same type of conversation that I did.
The Disney franchise has become so successful mainly because of the fandom surrounding it. Although their content is geared towards younger children, people of all ages are able to take part. During my stay at Disney, I witnessed as my parents even got in on the fun by taking pictures with their favorite characters that roamed through the theme park. Disney has expanded by opening addition theme parks in California and even Japan, proving that this global sensation shows no limits in terms of language and cultural barriers.
Fan audiences are such an important aspect of popular culture. As someone who is interested in many different genres's of music, film, and television; I have learned that I am apart of multiple different fan audiences. Social media has allowed me to become an interactive fan member as I am able to use these communication platforms to connect and share with other fans across the world. More and more live television programs are beginning to incorporate social media features to engage their audiences. When watching broadcasted events such as the MTV Music Awards, audience tweets sharing their opinions are displayed in the corner of the screen as the program airs. When this feature was introduced, I found it to be very intriguing as critics including myself, are often skeptical of whether viewers choice awards programs are truly reflective of public opinion, which ultimately allows viewers to feel as if they are valued members of the production.
Chapter 8's corresponding article, Crowdfunding: A Spimatic application of digital fandom (Booth,2014), was particularly fascinating to me as I have taken part in crowdfunding on multiple occasions. The reading explained that Crowdfunding campaigns are successful if they are able to, "… engage their fans in a more participatory manner – acknowledging previous fan work, noting the saliency of fun activities in the past, appealing to fan attention in the future – highlight the temporal existence of a fandom" (Booth, p.151). My most significant event is taking part in a Go Fund Me campaign for my boyfriends' band. For several months they had struggled to raise enough money to go on tour across Canada and the U.S. At one point, I had jokingly suggested starting a Go Fund Me campaign but I was not aware of the success it would bring about. Within a week later, my boyfriend had started his campaign to raise $5,000 to put towards touring and equipment costs. They offered merchandise such as t-shirts and an online copy of their album to every person that donated money to their campaign. With the combined promotional efforts of the band, family, and friends; they were able to generate enough awareness using social media to raise $5,500 in 2 months. Although this was on a much smaller scale than a major film or television production, it was still amazing that the internet could accumulate support from people (even strangers) all over the world.

An Introduction
When it comes to Star Wars, I grew up in a strange period of purgatory. Unlike the kids of the 70’s and the 80’s, (the latter of which only comprising the first three years of my life), I have no memories of seeing any of the original films in theaters. But neither did I spend my golden years surrounded by the omnipresence that is Star Wars, like the children of today. My earliest memories of Star Wars come from commercials for Micro Machines’ “Star Wars Action Sets,” or the odd clip featured on Muppet Babies. It wasn’t until I was nearing 7 years old that my father was prompted by the promotional sale of THX’s digitally remastered VHS release to buy these movies on a lark, and show them to my sister and I.
youtube
In later years, I would collect each and every one of these, in lieu of any of the Kenner line. They imprinted on me, early.
Now, my father is not the ubergeek that I am. This was a guy who owns his own construction business, loves college football and was the quintessential jock, growing up. In my youngest years, I do recall him being a fan of Star Trek - The Next Generation, but aside from that, he didn’t, and still doesn’t, bear the trappings of what we would recognize as “nerd culture.” And yet, even so, he had a sneaking suspicion that we might appreciate these movies. Little did he know he was creating a monster. My sister and I sat glued to the TV as we binged both A New Hope and Empire Strikes Back, periodically taking breaks to run upstairs from the TV room and re-enact our favorite scenes. For the record, I do remember the revelation of Vader’s true identity spoiled for me long before I ever saw the movie.
"Well, thank you, Mr. Blow-The-Picture-for-Me.”
Of course, the day after that was Sunday, which meant we were both returning to our Mother’s house, after spending the weekend with Dad. My parents had divorced a few years prior, which meant that every other weekend we spent with my father, while the remainder of the time, we lived with her. This, of course, meant that it was going to be another two weeks before I got to figure out what happened in Return of the Jedi. It was agony. I couldn’t focus in school, (not that I was overly concerned with that, anyway), none of my friends had seen any of them, so I couldn’t even talk with them about that, and, of course, this was a time before the ubiquity of the internet, so looking up spoilers wasn’t even an option. After a few days, I begged and pleaded with my mom to take me to Blockbuster Video so that we could rent the third movie. They didn’t have it. Not that it was already on loan...they simply didn’t have a copy in stock.
And apparently, insisting my mother buy me ANOTHER copy of the trilogy was “unreasonable.”
Finally, the two weeks were up, and after a grueling two-hour car ride to Chatham County, North Carolina, I threw my copy of Return of the Jedi into the VCR and sat with my sister to watch. It was pure catharsis. The fear, the anxiety, the uncertainty about the future that Luke must have felt between episodes V and VI was mirrored in my own grip of suspense, and when the Jedi finally returned, he did so with gusto. To my relief, Luke did not end up killing his father, but instead, met a form of reconciliation. A realization that despite their differences, Luke and Anakin were more alike than perhaps either of them initially realized. It hit me very close to home. After all, if there was hope for Vader and Luke, perhaps there was hope for me and my father, as well.
My father and I’s relationship was complex, to say the least. As mentioned previously, we could not have been more different in terms of interests and hobbies. For that matter, we often found ourselves butting heads more often than not. As a child of divorced parents, especially at such a young age, I had my fair share of trust issues that manifested themselves in assorted ways. And my father’s patience could sometimes be very thin. In retrospect, I feel that he did the best that he could, and I certainly didn’t make things any easier on my part. My desires to dream big often came at the cost of my focus on reality. In short, the idea of staying on the farm, fixing Moisture Vaporators seemed like agony, while I’d rather be playing with my Skyhopper.
“Ptew! Ptew! Take that, Womprat!”
Much like the aforementioned pair, my father and I did eventually grow to a more mutual understanding that came with age and maturity, on both of our parts, and a developing sense of compromise. However when the credits rolled for the final time, I remember being struck with the strongest sense of depression. After all, it was over. There were no more adventures to be had. Of course, there were rumors, at the time, of the prequel trilogy coming to light, soon...but those were many years incoming. Until my next trip to the library revealed to me that the adventures had not ended...they had only begun.
While far from the first written, Timothy Zahn’s Thrawn Trilogy books certainly among the most popular and groundbreaking.
My sister, being a bit older than me, was able to tear through Timothy Zahn’s Heir to the Empire and subsequent books, while I tried to occupy myself with slightly easier fare. I tore through Kevin J. Anderson’s Young Jedi Knights series the way kids today absorb Harry Potter. Which doesn’t surprise me, as from a narrative standpoint, the two bear very striking similarities. For the record, I’d take training on Yavin IV with Luke Skywalker over a letter from Hogwarts any day of the week. As for creating my own stories, my stepmother worked for a distribution company that focused on memorabilia, and as such, I had access to not only toys but trading cards, posters, cardboard standups, everything. And of course, at the time, catalogs and special orders were the only place where such things could be procured. Christmas of that year consisted of nothing but Star Wars.
Imagine, if you can, a time when Star Wars merchandise was hard to come by.
I finally got to see my favorite movies on the big screen once again when in 1997, the Original Trilogy was re-released into theaters for the Special Edition. Seeing the updated special effects was...kind of cool, but I never felt there was anything particularly wrong with them in the first place. Spoiled by such realistic effects as seen in Jurassic Park, their dated hokiness only added to their charm. To me, it was somehow more impressive that they were able to do all of that without computers. But the bonus side-effect of the Special Edition was the bringing of Star Wars back into the cultural spotlight. Not only did toys return to the shelves, but games like Rebel Assault II and Masters of Teräs Käsi for the Sony Playstation gave these weird little movies that only I seemed to love a sense of legitimacy.
Ahh, Masters of Teräs Käsi, the fighting game that gave players control of their favorite Star Wars characters. Like Luke, Leia, Chewbecca, and of course, the unfortunately monikered Hoar.
Of course, being a kid, I didn’t have much of the geeky sense of ownership that comes with a niche interest becoming more mainstream. To me, I was simply thankful that my friends were starting to take an interest. Within a few years, speculation began to stir about the impending release of Star Wars: Episode I. And then came the day that the trailer dropped. I remember waiting hours, on my dial-up connection, for a grainy trailer to load, playing whatever footage had already buffered over and over again until finally getting to watch the entire trailer from start to finish. Now, in my older, more cynical times, I would cringe at the enthusiasm that I expressed for The Phantom Menace, but of course, at the time, I was simply happy to see another Star Wars movie. And while my first love shall always remain the originals, in spite of myself, I can’t outright say that I am capable of hating any of them.
Hate does, after all, lead to suffering…
It seems almost embarrassing to say that most of my passions can be sourced, in some way, from Star Wars. My love for reading developed from both the previously mentioned Young Adult novels and also Lord of the Rings, books that were recommended to me simply because of my love of Star Wars. I grew up from playing “the Adventures of Luke and Leia” with my sister to telling my own stories via many of the Star Wars Role-Playing Games that have come out across the years, (and continue to do so, to this day.) My admiration for Voice Acting coming from the sheer astonishment that the guy who voiced the Joker in my favorite cartoon also played Luke Skywalker. And my love of filmmaking can be traced back to the puppetry and special effects utilized in the originals. Indeed, this blog, a Star Wars blog, is the conduit through which to pursue my passion for writing.
With movies being released, television shows in development and/or production, numerous comic book titles published by Marvel, and full-length novels being written on the regular, this franchise - which started out as three simple movies - only seems to be getting bigger by the day. This blog, for the most part, is an exploration of the stories that exist within the Star Wars canon. An exploration of the overarching story of the Skywalker family, and the struggles of the Light against the Dark. In addition to that, however, it is also an insight into the fandom of Star Wars, itself, and just what it is about these stories that want us to create our own. Whether you love the prequels, or hate them; whether the idea of a new generation of Star Wars fans delights or repulses you, and whether the codifying and quantifying of canon versus Legends is a source of relief or frustration -- we all want to live, if only for an hour or two, in a Galaxy Far, Far Away...
