My thoughts on Spiderman: Homecoming
Not that anyone asked lol
Things I noticed:
-Rue from Euphoria seems to have a ton of personality overlap with MJ.
-I thought that the incorrect quotes about Peter destroying a Quinjet were jokes, not like a serious thing where he actually destroys one.
-Am I the only one that left this movie certain that MJās some flavor of neurodivergent? I canāt be the only one, right?
-Mary Hollis is in this too, I knew her initially as the creepy trafficker from Euphoria.
Things I liked:
-I thought that Peterās little movie was very cute, but I was concerned that Happy was abducting him.Ā
-Peterās quite the high-energy kiddo.
-I loved all of the texts that Peter send Happy.
-3,803 piece lego set. Damn Iām jealous.
-Peterās just... sitting there and stimming.
-I love that this seems realistic of high schoolers
-Aunt May is awesome
-MJ just sitting there in the gym, lifting her book up and down as a workout.
-I like that Liz and Peter seem to have a decent friendship to build their maybe-romance
-I love how Peter is constantly happy to see Tony, even if he just fell like goodness knows how far through the atmosphere.
-Peter: āThey keep treating me like Iām a kid!ā Also Peter: Literally bouncing on the bed.
-While the other kids are swimming, MJās just sitting there, reading by the pool.Ā
-More stimming :)
-MJās the reason the decathlon team won
-I liked MJās Washington Monument callout.
-The scene where Peter saved the other kids was so cool
-Baby Monitor Protocol. LOL.
-Donald Glover :)
-MJ clowning Peter in detention is one of the best things that sheās ever done.
-MJ:Ā
/lh
Peter: ????
-Nice save, Ned!
-I liked that the reflection was 1/2 Peter, 1/2 Spidey.
-Really liked the thing at the end with Peter and Liz. They both held good boundaries, still cared about each other.
-I feel like Peter made the best decision for him.
-the credits were fun, if a little glitchy.
What I didnāt like:
-Tony didnāt need to sexualize Aunt May. It was gross and unneccesary.
-About Peterās costume change: You cannot. And I mean cannot. take off a button-up shirt without undoing the top button. You just canāt.Ā
-Tony wasnāt even physically there? Come on, man.
-Itās weird that Tonyās okay with borderline-trafficking a kid across a continent but isnāt okay with said kid hitching a ride to Maryland?
-Why did they need to have Flash sexually harass Peter? Unnecessary.
-Capās videos. Enough said there.Ā
-āBye, Mr. Criminalā This was petty and rigid and again, UNNECESSARY. of peter to do.
-The whole car ride with Peter and Lizās dad was so fucking uncomfortable.
-The yelling montage of Peter like showing off his masculinity just felt like it was thrown in there cause someone said that it should be, not cause it actually added to the story.
-āBoundaries are goodā coming from you, Stark, this is hilarious.
-The analogy was gross. Like, too gross. Good that Tony recognized this though.
-Are the Avengers gonna fucking abduct/coerce Peter into living with them?
-Post-credits bullshit is my new least favorite Captain America.
Quotes I liked:
-āHowās your daughter?ā -Peter
-āWeird Alien Techā-Peter
-āAm I?ā MJ
-āI like coming here to sketch people in crisis.ā-MJ (but could totally have been said by Rue from Euphoria)
-āI like bread.ā Aaron (me too, Aaron. Me, too.)
-āI donāt want those weapons in this neighborhood. I have a nephew who lives here.ā-Aaron
-āCut the bullshit.ā-Aunt May.
-āIām looking at... porn.ā -Ned Leeds, certified cinnamon roll.
-āThey donāt care about us, Peter.ā-Vulture
-āWhat are you hiding... Peter?ā-MJ
-āWhat the f-ā -Aunt May
āProtesting is patriotic!ā-Teacher dude.
Evidence for the Trans Peter Parker headcanon:
-Penis Parker
-Why is Peter getting the puberty talk at 16?
-Ned asked if Peter could lay eggs.
-And why did Aunt May chose the wordĀ āfloweringā?
-Penis Parker (Part 2)
-Penis Parker (Part 3)
-āIām not a girl, Iām a BOY. I mean, a-a MAN.āĀ āIām not a girl, Iām a MAN.ā
-Peter being unfamiliar with ties and cologne.
Anyhow. This is the end of this rant.

ok heres the rambling i hope u like reading
seriously some of you guys claim to be progressive but youve managed to dredge up the oldĀ āvideo games/ movies/ comics/ magazines/ books/ hoop and stick games are the reason our kids are violentā argument lol. i keep seeing ppl say every piece of art that depicts bad things is unequivocally bad and its so stupid. first of all, you should be able to understand that fictional characters are not real people and their actions donāt take place in the real world. on top of that, you should understand that just because someone made art depicting something bad doesnāt mean theyre bad, and just because someone enjoyed it doesnt mean theyre fucked up and evil and literally condoning blah blah blah. when you say this shit, you sound like a boomerĀ
at some point you should be mature enough to see a piece of art and engage with it beyond the level ofĀ āiām going to write a callout post for pearl from steven universeā. and more than that, you should accept that art is subjective and other ppl are gonna experience it differently than youĀ
iāve been a horror fan for a long time and i love seeing fictional violence. blood, gore, torture, lies, cheats, dirty deeds, sexual assault, extreme emotions, extreme trauma, unreality, and morally gray characters. when handled well, these things can be dramatic, shocking, and emotional and i love it.Ā
i understand that some ppl would rather avoid these things, and i think content warnings are a good thing. if my friend has an anxiety disorder and epilepsy iām not gonna force them to marathon all my favorite horror movies with blinking lights. you should be able to pace yourself. but the flip side of that is: some people donāt need those warnings. some people actively seek that stuff out and enjoy it. and just because itās not for you doesnāt mean itās not ok for someone else to love it. there are tons of normal level headed ppl who enjoy things that are way more extreme than your average disney channel show, and enjoying those things doesnāt make them problematic or suspicious or whatever, they just have different tastes than youĀ
example. one of my favorite characters is guts from berserk, one the best manga series of all time. in berserk, guts attempts to sexually assault another character, kills hundreds of people including a child, and serves in a war under a proto-fascist warlord. does the fact that i enjoy berserk mean i condone murdering hundreds of people? no, i wouldnt hurt a dragonfly and im also a tiny baby. does liking berserk mean i cant criticize the parts that are genuinely bad?? also no, the series basically treats casca (our main female lead) as a lamp for half the plot, and the part where guts tries to assault her is framed as an edgy character moment, which is pretty misogynistic if u ask me. again, if any of that turns you off, you dont have to read it. but i did read it, and i got a lot out of it and learned a thing or two about how not to write about women.Ā
with any piece of art, you should bring your own morals into it, and engage with its ideas. art is not always good or evil, itās a dialog between you and an author. you NEED to be able to appreciate these things without resorting to insane reactions and in-group/out-group shenanigansĀ
you know that kid you knew in 9th grade who you could askĀ ādo you listen to [band]ā and they would always say yes no matter what band it was, just because they were terrified of the idea that someone else might be different than them in some tiny way? thats some of yall except youve formed a hivemind around it and appropriated a bunch of liberal academic terms lolĀ

Name: Illegible or Illegiblewords lately. Iāve switched it in the past a few times.
Fandoms: Iāve been in Final Fantasy XIV for the past couple of years now. Passively I might be in Pathologic fandom and Dragon Age fandom? Maybe others too on and off. I was in comic fandoms for a long time but honestly that spiraled into a hot mess of epic proportions so Iāve mostly peaced out of there. Still love stories, characters, and buddies from there though.
Most Popular Oneshot: Ironically itās Ideation for Bladerunner 2049 haha. I did exactly one fic there right after seeing the movie and didnāt go back, but I thought it was very good and I had a specific story I wanted to tell. Itās one of my most popular fics, and given itās gen too Iām actually kind of happy about that.
Most Popular Multichapter: The Immortal Wound for FFXIV fandom! I had only just started writing for the fandom, and the series leading up to this fic was my first time writing NPC shipping in FFXIV. I was seriously, SERIOUSLY nervous at first! I wrote the first fic, Posturing, as a personal challenge to do an ambiguous protagonist/NPC since I saw other people doing that and wanted to see if I could pull it off. Posted it at around 4 in the morning then deleted within a few minutes out of anxiety lol. A week went by before I read it again, realized I still liked it, and put it back up for good. That being well-received helped encourage me to keep trying, and by The Immortal Wound it was getting solid attention. The experience really meant a lot to me!
Actual Worst Part of Writing: Probably chapter maps within the outlining process for me. Itās needed for how I approach things, but shit is anxiety-inducing and stressful af lol. I basically plan each event out in high detail before actually writing the fic, so when the time comes for me to legit write Iām more or less following a plan I can trust. Making that plan is the tough part.
How Do You Choose Your Titles: Often titles are the last things I figure out before starting the fic itself. I know I like punchy stuff if I can manage. Sometimes itāll be one word, sometimes itāll be a quote or song lyric, sometimes itāll be a saying, sometimes itāll be a phrase that feels fitting. I go fast and loose usually, and tbh Iāve tried to tell myself not to overthink it too hard. I do try title related works in ways that have some thematic link when I can.
Do You Outline: HahahahahaHAHAHAHAhaha yeah. Straight up my outlines are eldritch terrors for their detail, length, and complexity. I donāt mean that as a brag at all, seriously--I tend to get frozen a bit if I donāt have an outline by and large because itās hard for me to keep track of whatās in my head and plan accordingly. Just end up with too many moving parts + revision and pacing get wonky otherwise.
Depending on the project I might have sections tied to setting, characters, magic systems, religions, etc. at the top. Fanfic this is less likely but does crop up sometimes.
To give an example of the first bullet of the first chapter of an ongoing fic:
Post-Shinryu, the Warrior of Light lingers in the Royal Menagerie alone at his own insistence to search for the Eye of Nidhogg. In the process he remembers the fight against Zenos and Shinryu. Note he was overcome by an almost feral rage at Zenosā assumption that he was the target of anything resembling lust. Those attentions (ābite down upon my jugularā) belong to another, but note similarities of two pale-eyed, long-haired blondes. Seeing Shinryu, the Warrior had no idea whether Lahabrea survived within. The fusion was horrifying to see and as he fought he didnāt hold back because besides obvious dangers, he was also ready to mercy kill if needed. Also note Warrior wanted to intervene against Thordan for Lahabrea but wasnāt fast enough, questions a little privately how far heād have gone against him. It might not have mattered even if heād managed since he knows Lahabrea was going crazy and unable to listen. Locating and examining the Eye, he recognizes how drained it is. Certainly not enough to threaten him when dealing with post-battle exhaustion. So he reaches inside with his own aether, relentless in pushing aside every foreign elementāNidhogg, Thordan, the corrupted Rhalgr, the places Zenos caged them all under his own will. Zodiarkās tempering is what helps him ultimately find Lahabrea, who is barely alive. Zodiarkās tempering has preserved what it could but has a much more tenuous grip in consequence. When the Warrior finds him Lahabrea isnāt even aware, functionally unconscious. The tempering flares against him defensively and this time the Warrior focuses on it. This is all that has allowed Lahabrea to stay alive. He could force himself closer but there is no vessel. Besides, the process of separating a fragile soul so deficient in aether is too great a risk. So he keeps the Eye.
Itās not the only bullet of comparable size for that chapter. The overall piece has at least 40 total chapters, but probably more.
Ideas I Probably Wonāt Get Around To, But Wouldnāt It Be Nice: Tbh probably some of the earlier WIPs I have that arenāt finished already. Not just FFXIV (Dead Language, With Good Intentions) but other fandoms. I could end up circling back in the future one day but who knows.
Callouts @ Me: āNO MORE WIPS HOLY SHIT YOU HAVE OVER 20ā³, āRELEARN HOW TO DO DRABBLESā, āGET UR PRESENTS DONEā, āREVIEW OTHERS MORE THE STAGE FRIGHT IS RIDICULOUSā.
Best Writing Traits: I try to write any character as the hero of their own story/with the capacity to be someoneās favorite. I do my research and prioritize telling a good story first and foremost. I can change my writing style according to need and am good at capturing the cadence and word choices of different characters.
Spicy Tangential Opinion: If no transaction has been made (esp. monetary), no one owes you shit online. Not reviews, not hits, not praise, not agreement, not content of any sort. It sucks to feel like youāre creating to a void. It sucks to be passionately in love with a rarepair when other ships are drowning in art and stories.
People still donāt owe you.
If you donāt like someone elseās content, create something exploring what you do like... or even why you donāt like that content. Tell a story. Create art. Make photosets and playlists and analyses. If it is not a literal crime (as opposed to portraying fictional crime), donāt discourage other creators no matter how awful you might find their stuff. Lend your own voice to an alternative as convincingly as you can. And if that doesnāt persuade others, you need to keep honing your own skills.
If you want more of something to exist, spread inspiration. Again this can be in storytelling, art, photosets, playlists, analysis, you name it. Give form to your passion. And if others disagree or donāt respond, keep working at it. This is a skill too, and it takes practice.
Iāve found it shows when work is created out of a sense of guilt, fear, or obligation. The quality is much lower and no one latches on to keep building in-turn. And IMO it is essential to build up rather than tearing down.

I just finished watching the X-Files and I have a lot of thoughts
Yes itās 2021 and Iāve finally finished a show I should have seen ages ago. Normally I might make a YouTube video with all my thoughts but I feel like doing something more immediate and since no one I know has seen it...here I go.
Going in nearly blind (besides knowingĀ āMulderās the believer and Scullyās the skepticā thank you ATS, Mulder/Scully is one of the quintessential ships of fandom history, and there was a reboot or something a couple years ago) I found myself rather hooked from the beginning. I enjoyed the practical effects, the seasons-long mysteries (though sometimes not knowing the answers got frustrating), and the way the show managed to stay fresh for its original 9 season run. It was definitely a well-crafted show with a good balance of monster of the week episodes (further divided into procedural monster of the week - your average monster/witch/freak of science killing random people - and character-based monster of the week - the haunted house on Christmas is the first episode that comes to mind) and lore/mythology building episodes (everything tying back to the alien conspiracy aka anything that saidĀ āWritten by Chris Carterā)
I can see where the Mulder/Scully chatter has come from. I was definitely shipping them very early on, and not just in aĀ āooh theyāre rivals so of course Iām gonna ship themā kind of way I was expecting going in. They are one of those examples of fictional soulmates, platonic, romantic, two people who are essential in the othersā lives. They are the epitome of āthe best romances come from people who work well togetherā. Literally. They balance each other, even when sometimes the roles would get flipped. You need a logician and you need a believer in your search of The Truth. I also appreciated overall it seemed an equal balance between each of the pair gettingĀ ādamseledā. It wasnāt Mulder saving Scully all the time (another thing I was kind of expecting). The one thing Iām still puzzling over is which one I would consider the one main protagonist, if I had to choose. My gut says Scully, sheās the audience insert brought into this fantastical world who grows to open her mind a little. But by the end, itās Mulder who has all his questions answered, his purpose for coming to the X-files complete. Mostly. Pretty much. Thereās always another conspiracy, though.
I will stand by my early observation that my absolute favorite parts of the show are Scullyās right arching eyebrow and Mulderās inability to function like a normal human when sheās out of the office. I never thought Iād get emotional over pencils stuck to the ceiling but it happened.
And now a rundown of thoughts on all the main characters...
Mulder: Two things I said most often to the TV:Ā āyou cheeky little shit, youāre gonna get yourself killedā andĀ āoh honey I want to give you a hug!ā I also wish I had done a little more BTS research besides figuring out where and when to watch the 2 movies because that would have saved my two season litany ofĀ āheās gotta come back, they wouldnāt kill one of the main characters off offscreen, heās written and directed episodes, I would have heard at some point if he got fired, Chris Carterās just pulling a conspiracy of his own, heās fucking with the audience by pulling him off the credits, right right RIGHT?ā and then I should have figured out the reboot was LITERALLY STILL THEM so that would have saved my The Truth litany ofĀ āwell all his mysteries are solved so I guess his arcās complete, itās a supernatural show so I GUESS you can kill off one of the mains in the finale, but thereās too much build up to save him, I would have heard about it if it had THAT kind of ending, right right RIGHT?ā
Scully: Two things I said most often to the TV:Ā āYes you go girl!ā andĀ āoh honey I want to give you a hug!ā Gillian gets all the credit for wearing those fucking heels for that long and probably didnāt get paid enough for it (though I appreciated their little callout to it in the movie episode). Iām glad they only went to the mystical pregnancy well once, though the build-up was a little too heavy-handed. I canāt wait to rewatch and see the gradual development of her knowledge and understanding, so much so that by the time it becomes her and Doggett as the team, Scully is absolutely without question the āMulderā.
I also would say, about both of them, that they need a vacation...which they did get...probably not the vacation I was hoping for them.
And now for many less thoughts about the rest:
Skinner: flip-flopped maybe a couple too many times for my liking. Wish we knew a little more about him. Definitely the first person to ship the two of them.
The Lone Gunmen:
AKAĀ āahh itās my boys!ā (me squealing every time I saw their actorsā names appear in the credits). Nice little extension of the team and interesting to see technology fromĀ āback thenā. Loved how they used their stories as little breathers after really heavy two-parters.Ā
Frohike: adorable little grump who knows his kung fu
Langly: did he just choose not to cut his hair for 9 years or did they not let him?
Byers: marry me
Smoking Man: or whatever nickname you want to call him. Yes, I know they revealed his name but Iām not bothered to look it up now. The definition ofĀ āyou arenāt dead in a supernatural show unless you die on screenā (though he goes and breaks that trope too because hey fan service!). Had me sayingĀ āugh this bitchā every time he appeared on screen so I guess he got the job done.
Krycek: also had me sayingĀ āugh this bitchā and I wish I didnāt learn his actorās name so early on so I would be more surprised when he showed up in later seasons. I think he worked pretty well as a secondary bad guy and is another Iāll be watching more for in my rewatch.
Marita: grew more tired of her the longer she stayed on. Became less interesting when she was revealed to be in with the Syndicate. Nice to have another female character, though.
Jeffrey Spender: my catchphrase with him wasĀ āI wanna slap his little weasel faceā. I figured out who he was before it was revealed, though that I blame on my ability to recognize actors...unless it was supposed to be an easy enough twist to figure out? (I guess the actor made enough of an impression in the āgreatest hits of Smoking Man: Americaās assassinā episode for them to want to keep him around). Did not like him one bit until Season 9. Then my thoughts were mainlyĀ āJEFF!? Theyāre entrusting the safety of William to JEFF!?ā
William: okay the episodeĀ āWilliamā was pretty much me sayingĀ āwhat the FUCK was that?ā and Iām mad I didnāt figure out the Jeffrey twist that time. As for the character, kid deserves better. I was waiting for a Once Upon a Time style knock on the doorĀ āhey, I think youāre my momā at some point but NOPE he had a purpose and they were sticking to it! The ambiguous powers (AKA which came first, this or Stranger Things 2?) were a little annoying, I suppose, but there wasnāt enough time, or interest, to explore it all. Also, pandemic? That sure hit differently to a viewer today than it would have a couple years ago holy shit.
Doggett: didnāt like him at first, which I guess youāre not supposed to, but then he turned into a big old teddy bear. Whatever happened to him? Dude deserved a shout-out in the reboot.
Reyes: loved her from the start, a different kind ofĀ āMulderā. HATE what they did to her in the reboot. I thought she and Doggett were supposed to live happily ever after.
Okay, I think Iām pretty much out of thoughts for now. Excuse me as I start watching all over again, free of some of this āwhatās gonna happen next?ā anxiety since I now know where itās all going.

When You Get Kicked Out
so I have been going THROUGH it these past nine months, not pregnant or anything lol, just hoo boy a whole fucking LOT, which is way too much to unpack in just one tidy authorās note so iāll just leave it at that.Ā
when I wrote this (literally just now, like this is straight from draft 1 to posting no editing because Iām really tired but I canāt sleep and itās 6 am!), it was titledĀ ārelevant to my situation but not so specific that it feels like a callout post for me by meā so. And this is just!! a portion!! but i already wrote myself a therapeutic little vent piece which I probably wonāt post bc itās really really personal, but yeah. um. Iām so tired. and iām big mad that Iāve been so absent.
tumblr formatting has me kinda mad but weāll make do. um shit I gotta do the tag list huh. rip.
Tagging: UGH @blindedstarlight @magictactic200 @honey-your-bee-puns-sting @bestchocobois @glacian-apocalypse @jaysfandomcorner @tiniestofqueens @tales-of-a-fallen-star mmmmmmm iām sorry i really canāt keep it up :(
--
to start, this definitely 10000% takes place in an AU where the bros all live together to be able to afford the insane rent prices in the city of Insomnia (but still have a guest bedroom), and youāre their friend/polyamorous significant other/idk whatever, close enough that this scenario can happen
your parents kick you out. and you donāt have anywhere to go! and no money to get a place for yourself! so youāre kinda fucked!!
you didnāt wanna tell the bros initially bc you didnāt want to burden them with your issues but you accidentally let it slip to Prompto (who just has a way of coaxing out that shit, somehow) and he talked it over with the others and now they literally will not let you not move in with them bc theyād much rather that than you being on the streets
sweet boys
so you set up in the guest bedroom and they help you unpack everything even though youāre kinda on the fence about it bc youāre honestly thinking this is just gonna be a temporary thing (they are NOT on that wavelength)
because theyāre there for you to help, unpacking goes a lot faster (though it is kind of stressful getting Noctis to respect the way you put your clothes in your drawers, thereās a system and he just doesnāt get it okay)Ā
(you and gladio butt heads a little bit as well but it doesnāt ever amount to anything -- you keep changing your mind about where you want that lamp and heās really tired of moving it every few minutes)Ā
once everything is unpacked, ignis helps you get organized and helps you store all of your stuff in a space-efficient manner (they may or may not elevate the bed for that sweet sweet extra storage space)Ā
once that is done, prompto will help you decorate so it really feels more homey (itās not home yet, and he knows that, but he wants you to be as comfortable as possible)
but all of that is really fucking exhausting, so if you call for a break or start generally falling out of it, the boys move the party to the couch for bigass blanket sharing and watching stupid videos and/or movies
once youāre all unpacked and at least a little more comfortable, they start trying to ease you into some normalcy through a routine.Ā
they want you to be a part of their day, so theyāll invite you to join them when they do stuff. if youāre like me and develop some temporary insomnia under extreme stress, your day starts with prompto and noctis. if youāre a ride or die early riser, your day starts with ignis and gladio
if your sleep schedule doesnāt fit either of those categories, youāre more likely to catch all four of them chillin round the house (in the absence of errands)
once you get settled into that and find your place in the home dynamic, they start trying to focus on addressing your stress levels and coping mechs/unpacking all of that trauma
whatever was the reason for you getting kicked out, they wanna know about it (on your terms, they wonāt make you tell them before youāre ready)
Noctis probably has the least amount of tact when it comes to this -- maybe the most depending on what it was -- heās definitely the most blunt about bringing it up.Ā
talking about it is hard -- theyāve been there for most of it already, but talking about everything as a whole and how it culminated at you losing your home is just. hard. and they understand that
ignis is at the ready with your favorite comfort foods and drinks and gladio is giving you a relaxing massage to help with the stress and tension
bro if affection is your thing then you will!! be given!!!! affection!!! hugs, kisses, cuddles, sex, whatever you need, thereās literally four of them so all of that is in pretty much endless supply
if you just want platonic shit!!! playing video games!! cards!! board games!! reading in the same room!! just sitting together and not really interacting except showing each other wack memes!!! they are here for that too!!!
if you just gotta be outside!! gladio will take you to his favorite spots!!Ā
if you just wanna nap!! cuddle up with noctis!!!
if you just want a good laugh!!! prompto is your guy!!!
if you just wanna vibe and bake and/or cook or just make fuckin drinks!!! ignis is right there!!!
basically what Iām saying is that if your parents kick you out, youāll be moving in with your best bros and they will help you work through all that shit while being as supportive and caring as possible and making sure that you know that you are loved and that you always have a place with them!!
#final fantasy xv#ffxv#final fantasy 15#ff15#noctis#noctis lucis caelum#prompto#prompto argentum#ignis#ignis amicitia#gladio#gladiolus amicitia#(smacks myself on the chest) this baby can fit so much trauma in it#:') this is fine#animal crossing is the thing keeping me sane#but only on a narrow thread#(of course i don't mean that totally. i have a support system thank god)#(but home life just aint it)#press f in the chat lol

Danganronpa 1 & 2 characters as High SchoolĀ ārecommended readingāĀ books I actually read
Makoto Naegi
To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee when i read it: 5th grade for fun, 10th grade for English class did i like it? well enough yeah content warnings: thematic & period-typical racism, ableism, and sexism about: Recounts a summer in which Scout and her brother, Jem, watch their lawyer father defend a black man accused of raping a white woman in the south while balancing raising them alone. Other stuff happens, but thatās the most important plot thread.
Sayaka Maizono
Medea by Euripides when i read it: i donāt remember, maybe 9th for drama, 12th for English? did i like it? yep! content warnings: child murder, infidelity, some pretty brutal other character deaths, sexism about: Medea, who has sacrificed everything to be with her husband - even committed treason - has been left by the man so he can move on to woo and wed a princess. And she loses her shit.
Leon Kuwata
The Adventures of Huckelberry Finn by Mark Twain when i read it: 11th grade did i like it? yeah! content warnings: thematic & period-typical racism (use of the n-word), domestic abuse, classism iirc? about: After his abusive dad comes back and demands money under the threat of death, Huck Finn runs away with a fugitive slave down the Mississippi River. Being Mark Twain, itās a comedy, although Huckās father is genuinely kind of frightening and his friendship with Jim is kind of heartwarming.
Chihiro Fujisaki
Frankenstein by Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley when i read it: 10th grade for fun, 12th grade & freshman year of college for class did i like it? Iāve got mixed feelings; i love the book, hate most peoplesā interpretations of it. content warnings: character death, incest (depending on the version of the novel you read), unethical doctors, neglectful parents about: Thinking he knows better than literally anyone else heās ever met, Victor Frankenstein decides itās his birthright to play god. He robs graves to build the perfect body, and then, once heās successful, flips his shit and refuses to acknowledge any part he played in the creation, wrecking the lives of like everyone he knows.
Mondo Oowada
The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton when i read it: like 6th or 7th grade, for fun did i like it? i loved it! content warnings: abuse, thematic classism, character death about: Honestly the most obvious choice to make for Mondo. Ponyboy Curits, a greaser, recounts the last few months of his life in which, after being repeatedly harassed and then nearly killed by gang of rich kids, his friend Johnny stabs one to death. In order to keep Johnny out of prison and Ponyboy out of a boysā home, the two run away. Considering Ponyboy is also being raised by an older brother, this totally fits Mondo.
Kiyotaka Ishimaru
King Lear by William Shakespeare when i read it: twice in college (discliamer: as an english major i had to taken an entire course on shakespeare, so he shows up a lot here between that and having done theatre) did i like it? no content warnings: a surprising amount of gore for a stage play, including a guy getting his eyes gouged out and someone getting beheaded iirc about: The kingās getting up in years, so heās hoping he can drop the workload off onto his three daughters while remaining the figurehead. His youngest, Cordelia, who he loves best, refuses to kiss his ass by saying that heāll still have power over her once sheās married, and this pisses him off so he disinherits her. Then her sisters, annoyed with their father and his favoritism, decide that with Cordelia out of the way they can now do basically whatever they want and determine to make his life hell. Since he named them Goneril and Regan, I donāt blame them.
Hifumi Yamada
The Canterbury Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer when i read it: college, but i wanna say i read some of the stories in it for English classes in high school? did i like it? some of the stories i did yeah content warnings: varies from story to story, but i remember unsanitary, drunkenness, and infidelity about: The overarchingĀ āplotā as such is that a group of people are making a pilgrimage to Canterbury, and decide that to pass the time they will tell two stories each. Each story is told in-character, and whoever tells the best story has to...buy everybody dinner, or something? I donāt really recall. Itās a comedy, but itās also unfinished because Chaucer bit off way more than he could chew.
Celes Ludenberg
āThe Cask of Amontilladoā by Edgar Allan Poe when i read it: 11th grade did i like it? probably, iām a fan of Poe content warnings: drunkenness, murder about: This one got memetic on tumblr for a while, but essentially this guy decides to get revenge on an old friend of his for some kind of sleight by getting him drunk during Carnival, leading him into the basement, and burying him alive. Poe isnāt one to go soft.
Sakura Oogami
āA Very Old Man With Enormous Wingsā by Gabriel Garcia Marquez when i read it: 10th grade did i like it? no content warnings: objectification, something akin to torture about: A family finds an old man with wings lying face-down on the ground and decide to keep him like a pet. People see him and assume he is an animal, and the family decides to start charging admission like their own private sideshow, while onlookers abuse him. One of those extra depressing stories that makes you wonder why the hell you had to read it for class.
Mukuro Ikusaba
The Crucible by Arthur Miller when i read it: the first time, probably in 6th or 7th grade, and then several more times after that for a variety of other classes. itās a theatre and English class staple.Ā did i like it? when taken in context, yes. but iām also fucking sick of reading it. content warnings: infidelity, paranoia bait, period-typical racism & sexism (takes place during the Salem Witch Trials) about: The plot is a witch hunt, in which a girl who had an affair with a married man claims to have been taken over by the spirit of the devil and that all her friends and a variety of other townsfolk have too. It follows the trials as they try to determine who is and is not guilty, who will repent for their sins, and thematically is about puritanical hysteria. Itās about the Red Scare of the 50s, surveillance, the Hollywood Blacklist, propaganda, and tyrannical government. Naturally, teachers fail to provide any context for the play that actually makes it relevant or interesting. Compare to modern day callout/cancel culture.Ā
Kyouko Kirigiri
12 Angry Men by Reginald Rose when i read it: 10th grade (although iād already seen the movie) did i like it? yes content warnings: thematic classism & xenophobia about: The jury of a case in which a teenager is accused of murder convene to determine their verdict. All but one man believe him to be guilty. The rest of the play covers his attempts to sway his other jurors into at least casting aside their prejudices to view the case impartially.
Byakuya Togami
The Federalist Papers when i read it: summer before 12th grade for AP Gov. yikes. did i like it? oh god no. i had to have my lawyer dad explain it to me. content warnings: legalese and itās boring as fuck about: i mean itās just a bunch of essays to promote ratifying the the constitution. I donāt even remember if we read all of them. thatās how bad my retention of the subject is.
Toko Fukawa
The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka when i read it: 10th grade did i like it? kind of? content warnings: bugs, emotional abuse, depression about: A man awakens one day to find he has transformed into a giant cockroach. Itās a metaphor for his depression and what a burden he feels like to his family. If you read anything about Kafkaās life, youāll understand why he was depressed.
Aoi Asahina
Hamlet by William Shakespeare when i read it: iāve forgotten when my first time was because iāve had to read it so constantly. if i had to wager a guess, iād say middle school, though iāve read it for fun, for drama class, and for English class. did i like it? yes content warnings: character death, suicidal ideation, incest vibes (depending on your interpretation) about: Hamlet, not over the early death of his father, is enraged that his mother has married his uncle. Heās really bringing everyone else down about it, and then he starts to see his fatherās ghost on top of it all. No oneās sure if heās just mad with grief or if the ghost is for real, but he starts making life for everyone else difficult when he decides to try and expose his uncle as his fatherās murderer.
Yasuhiro Hagakure
Death of a Salesman by Arthur Miller when i read it: 10th grade i think? did i like it? if i believed in book-burning, this wouldāve been the first turned to ash in my trashcan content warnings: infidelity, mediocre white men with narcissism, suicide, not sure what else about: An aging father who thinks he was robbed of success by circumstances refuses to face facts that he is a loser by projecting his failures onto a son that now hates him and thinking real big of himself for a wash-out.
Junko Enoshima
Othello by William Shakespeare when i read it: college did i like it? itās my favorite Shakepseare play, actually! content warnings: thematic racism/xenophobia/Islamophobia, domestic abuse, character death about:Ā A tragedy centering around the planned downfall of Othello, Moor of Venice. Heās relatively well-respected for his heroics and generally being a pretty cool guy, but for whatever reason, Iago wants to see him suffer. And when I sayĀ āfor whatever reasonā - itās because Iago never gives a consistent one, but at the end he admits the entire thing has been his orchestration and heās had no issue exploiting peoplesā bigotry as a means to an end. One popular and pretty text-evident theory is that Iago is in love with Othello. But - causing a ruckus, bringing society to its knees, and torturing a man just for shits n giggles? Getting it all done by sheer power of charisma? Thatās all Junko ever does.
Monokuma
1984 by George Orwell when i read it: 10th grade for fun, 12th grade for class did i like it? yes but i donāt recommend it. i like tedious shit. content warnings: paranoia bait, sexual themes, torture, probably other stuff iām forgetting about: Classic dystopia lit in which the government controls the flow of information to the degree of creating its own language (ānewspeakā) to explain the technology used to survey its citizens and distill history-changing propaganda. Especially relevant in an era ofĀ āfake news.ā Where Big Brother Is Watching comes from. Extremely difficult to get into.
Hajime Hinata
Of Mice and MenĀ by John SteinbeckĀ when i read it:Ā 10th grade did i like it?Ā yeah content warnings:Ā ableism, implied domestic abuse, character death, animal death, era-typical sexism (1930s) about:Ā Very desolate and depressing novella about the futility of the American Dream toĀ āmake something of yourselfā. Two farmhands, Lennie and George, arrive at a California farm seeking employment. They just want to earn enough money to open up a farm of their own - a rabbit farm - and things are all downhill from there. Well-written and one of Steinbeckās shorter works.
Twogami
The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald when i read it: 11th grade did i like it? yes! i loved it. but in the way that you love sleazy tabloid rag stories. content warnings: infidelity, car accidents, character death about: Stupidly rich people in New York in the 1920s being fake as hell. Itās about excess and decadence and the idea of having a rags-to-riches story, and itās very homoerotic.
Teruteru Hanamura
Brave New World by Aldous Huxley when i read it: 10th grade did i like it? one of my top faves tbh content warnings: alcoholism & drug usage, thematic classism & racism (ie thatās the point), sexual themes, violence, non-graphic suicide (like literally the last sentence), character deaths about: You know how 1984 is a very pessimistic dystopia about government surveillance? Brave New World is likeĀ āwhat if everything was a utopia because of government interference?ā Itās easier to get into than 1984. Itās about a man from the upper echelon of society discovering the dirty secret of how society is able to able to function the way it does, an outsider into his world to shake things up.
Mahiru Koizumi
Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen when i read it: i dunno, summer between 9th and 10th grade maybe? did i like it? yes! i loved it. content warnings: there are a couple of guys who are sort of gross but thereās nothing that bad in it about: An upper-middle class family - more the mother than the father - trying to marry off the eldest of their five daughters. Itās largely character-driven and most of the plot focuses on Janeās relationship with Bingley, Elizabethās relationship with Darcy, and the problems witch judging people based on first impressions.
Peko Pekoyama
Call of the Wild by Jack London when i read it: 9th grade did i like it? fuck no content warnings: graphic animal violence. if thereās other stuff i forgot because i fucking hated this book. about: I think itās something like a dog getting lost in Alaska and has to learn to be a wolf in order to survive? Itās incredibly brutal and is one of those media where just reading it makes you feel cold.Ā
Hiyoko Saionji
The Glass Menagerie by Tennessee Williams when i read it: 10th grade did i like it? not really content warnings: man i donāt know, but itās by Tennessee Williams so thereās probably alcoholism, daddy issues, and homophobia about: An overbearing mother embarrasses her son and disabled daughter when an old school friend comes to visit...Iām not sure if thereās more of a plot to it than that. Like most Williams works, itās largely character-driven.
Ibuki Mioda
If On a Winterās Night a Traveler by Italo Calvino when i read it: college did i like it? this is one of those rare exceptions in books where i read it, because i remember having a visceral reaction to it, but i can not for the life of me remember a single damn thing about it other than how stupidly difficult it was to read.Ā content warnings: itās metaficiton. about: You are the protagonist. I genuinely canāt explain anymore than that.
Mikan Tsumiki
A Streetcar Named Desire by Tennessee Williams when i read it: 9th grade did i like it? not really, but iād be willing to reread it content warnings: domestic abuse, rape about: Unstable Blanche DuBois goes to visit her sister, Stella, and meets her appalling husband Stanley. All Tennessee Williams plays seem to have a theme of family tragedy in them, with this being probably the most bleak example.Ā
Nekomaru Nidai
The Odyssey by Homer when i read it: 9th grade, then again in college for a classics class did i like it? yeah content warnings: your usual classical Greek-variety nonsense, including character death, infidelity, and partying. about: Odysseus attempts to make his way back home after the Trojan War, and has a time of it. Having pissed off Poseidon heās gotten off-course and gotten lost another ten years, and had a whole slew of other adventures trying to make it back home and save his wife from the harassment sheās been getting since his disappearance.
Gundham Tanaka
The Tempest by William Shakespeare when i read it: 10th grade did i like it? not especially content warnings: thematic colonialism & racism...not sure what else but itās hard as fuck to read. try reading it out loud & acting along to it. about: I didnāt totally get it but thereās something about a wizard having been banished and now people are coming back to find him for some reason?Ā the people who exiled him & his brother & daughter have crash-landed on his island and now he might get his revenge. Thanks, TVTropes! All I remember is discussing in one class about how The Tempest managed to predict theĀ āfindingā of America and how the English would treat the native peoples. Itās aĀ āromanceā, which in that day and age meant it was about magic. Influenced some science fiction works like Brave New World (the title of which comes from a line spoken by Miranda). I should probably reread it.
Nagito Komaeda
The Catcher in the Rye by JD Salinger when i read it: 8th grade for fun did i like it? yeah content warnings: implied pedophilia. iām sure thereās other stuff but i donāt remember it well enough. about: Perennial troublemaker Holden Caulfield is kicked out of boarding school, and takes a hell of a long time getting home from the place as he complains about his declining mental state, hypocrisy, and loss of innocence. Itās one of those books you either really love or really hate, and has been repeatedly challenged because Holden swears too much and might be bisexual.
Chiaki Nanami
Pygmalion by George Bernard Shaw when i read it: 12th grade, i think did i like it? yes content warnings: classism about: A linguistics professor makes a bet with a friend that he can take any lower-class citizen and teach them to speak formal English, well enough to pass them off as aristocracy to other rich people. Itās the plot upon which the musical My Fair Lady is based, although it was intended as a deconstruction of the kind of plot whose trope it now codifies.
Sonia Nevermind
āLamb to the Slaughterā by Roald Dahl when i read it: 10th grade did i like it? yeah! content warnings: infidelity, character death about: A guy comes home and tells his heavily pregnant wife that heās been having an affair, and heās leaving her. She doesnāt take it well. I wonāt spoil the rest of it, as itās a short story, but itās fun to keep in mind that itās be the same guy who wrote classics such as Matilda and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
Kazuichi Souda
A Midsummer Nightās Dream by William Shakespeare when i read it: 8th grade for a book report and then again in....i donāt know. iāve had to read it a lot. did i like it? sure, itās got some pretty great insults content warnings: men being douchebags including stalker-y behavior, and a woman falls in love with a man who has a donkeyās head (it doesnāt last) about: Hermia & Lysander are planning to run away to get married because Hermiaās father doesnāt approve of Lysander, and sheās trying to dodge the affections of Demetrius - the man to whom she has been betrothed, because heās an ass who, among other things, slept with her friend Helena and then ditched her. Which Helena is still hung up on, even though heās a gross creep. At the same time, a group of actors are trying to get together a play for an upcoming royal wedding, and the King of the Faeries is trying to win back his wife. This all connects because a faerie decides to fuck around.
Fuyuhiko Kuzuryu
The Chocolate War by Robert Cormier when i read it: college, for an independent study did i like it? yeah content warnings: graphic violence, i think some homophobia? about: Kids and staff at a private school take a candy sale way too damn seriously. Thereās basically a mafia at the school and some sort of weird popularity contest and hazing going on.Ā
Akane Owari
āThe Most Dangerous Gameā by Richard Connell when i read it: 9th grade did i like it? i guess so content warnings: human hunting about: A man finds himself shipwrecked on an island, and is then hunted for sport. No, really.
Monomi
East of Eden by John Steinbeck when i read it: technically iām in the middle of it right now, but that counts, right? did i like it? so far, i guess i do, but itās mainly i care character who comes up later. couldnāt give less of a shit about adam trask, full offense content warnings: period-typical sexism & racism (set around the turn of the 20th century and published in 1952), implied pedophilia (that gets incredibly glossed over), ableism about: A combination of heavy-handed religious allegory (Steinbeck really just canāt cool it with the Cain and Abel theme naming) and family tree history. Follows the Trask family through Adamās childhood, tumultuous relationship with his brother, even worse relationship with his wife, and horrible parenting of his children. The end (which is what the film adaptation covers) is more centered on his son Cal Trask grappling with the idea that he might be evil because of his genetics, or something. I think thatās an argument you could make of Monomi, being related to Monokuma (or at least, how iām sure sheād feel).

HMM. for the weird asks, 1ā10, 16, 24, 38, 44, 58, 78, 87, aaaaaaaaand 92, just for fun
ITāS GOOD TO SEE YOU AGAIN FRIEND. Iām always ready to give you unnecessary essays lmao
1. coffee mugs, teacups, wine glasses, water bottles, or soda cans?
This one is so confusing to me aaaaaa. I guess all of them outside of teacups? Iāve used all of them for one reason or another and they worked for their intended purpose so I guess all of them except teacups because I don't have any in my house :|
2. chocolate bars or lollipops?
I only like a few specific flavors of lollipops, whereas I can get down with chocolate about 80-90% of the time~
3. bubblegum or cotton candy?
Iām cheese-ing this question with bubblegum since I donāt actually like real bubblegum, but I have this really nice grape/lemonade gum stash thatās my absolute fave <3
4. how did your elementary school teachers describe you?
I was always the Good Child, but also, like, genuinely kind and generous? I like to think thatās how I was, also very shy and quiet so yeah
5. do you prefer to drink soda from soda cans, soda bottles, plastic cups or glass cups?
The only soda I currently drink is Diet Pepsi and itās always from cans (I go through like 4-6 a day man itās an addiction)
6. pastel, boho, tomboy, preppy, goth, grunge, formal or sportswear?
If comfy stuff like hoodies and sweatpants are consideredĀ ātomboyā than yeah basically. Iāll wear formal stuff for formal things though, gotta love a nice dress every once in a while
7. earbuds or headphones?
Headphones for the most part. If I have to use earbuds then fine, but I prefer headphones over my ears rather than those tiny things getting shoved into my holes and having the potential to fall out :/
8. movies or tv shows?
TV shows... technically. I have a hard time sitting completely still through anything longer than 30 minutes (I have a hard time sitting completely still in general but we donāt gotta talk about that)
9. favorite smell in the summer?
CHLORINE FROM THE POOL DONāT @ ME I LOVE IT SO MUCH
10. game you were best at in p.e.?
Badminton all the waaaay. It was honestly like the only one I was good at too so hell yeah (remember all the times birdies would get stuck in the ceiling? I do)
16. most comfortable position to sit in?
This question is a callout because referencing Question 8 again I literally cannot sit still to save my life and I find myself changing how I sit every 20 goddamn minutes. The longest I can stay sitting is simply sitting in an office chair with my feet propped up on something like a step-stool with one leg crossed over the other so thereās that
24. favorite crystal?
I know this probably doesnāt count but like

Any kind of refraction crystal that incorporates light tbh
38. lemonade or tea?
Lemonade bitches. Get bitter stuff out of my FACE
44. favorite scent for soap?
Anything floral. Itās a basic answer but gonna be honest I donāt really think about this that much lmao
58. four talents youāre proud of having?
Good with music (multiple instruments and singing somewhat), good at video games (I hope), Iām considered pretty funny/witty by my friends, and hey, from what Iāve seen Iām an okay writer too so thatās pretty Gucci
78. coffee from a gas station or sushi from a grocery store?
I hate both of these things why would you make me PICK. I GUESS IāVE ALWAYS WANTED TO TRY SUSHI MIGHT AS WELL DIE DOING IT
87. your greatest fear?
The best way to word it would be dying unexpectedly. Iām absolutely terrified of just being alive one second and then boom. Something like a car crash happens or something just goes wrong with my body for no reason or choking on food suddenly... idk out of all things this spooks me the most and Iāve never been quite sure why
92. lamps, overhead lights, sunlight or fairy lights?Ā
Fairy lights for Aesthetic Reasons, lamps for practical ones
Ask me weird questions dear followers

King of Prism SSS Episode 3 commentary (Taiga)
I am SO RELIEVED that this episode is FINALLY out.Ā
I finally get to show you guys what the inside of my head has been like for two months.Ā
THE FESTIVAL THAT HAS BEEN INSIDE ME
GET BUCKLED IN
Taigaās room is divided into half Kazuki worship, half Aomori. Seems about right.
Let me start off by saying it brings me SO MUCH JOY how much Taiga loves Aomori. Aomori is way far removed from Tokyo, on the northernmost tip of the main island, and pretty much in the countryside. I went there 4-5 years ago before King of Prism existed AND I. LOVED. IT. There was a cool breeze even in the brutal Japanese summer, the atmosphere was refreshing and wonderful... and the festival. Two of the biggest things Aomori is known for are apples and, of course, the Nebuta festival which Iām convinced has to be the best festival in all of Japan. Those giant festival floats are just fucking amazing and I will be inter-splicing this post with my travel photos from that time.Ā
But even so, Iād think a boy at Taigaās age would still think Tokyo is a lot cooler and want to be in the big city. BUT NO. NOT TAIGA. And since I also CANNOT FUCKING STAND TOKYO either, every time Taiga in this episode says Aomori is better than Tokyo I just want to stand up and be likeĀ
FUCK YEAH IT ISĀ
Okay moving on, sorry this post is gonna be long enough as it is.Ā
When I first heard this line I swore it sounded like he was saying something about āLas Vegasā ahah... ha...
I am very happy with this screenshot.Ā
*ahem* Anyway. I looked up ārasseraā ages ago because I had no idea what that was about and apparently itās a phrase that lost itās original meaning over time as it got muddled together, and is now only used as a festival chant. It used to meanĀ ābring out the candlesā or something?
TheĀ āusā in the sub kind of annoys me because Over the Rainbow isnāt a part of Edel Rose anymore but maybe thatās.... just.... meeeeeeeeee..............
I took the night bus from Tokyo to Aomori before. It was 10 or 11 hours. It was... unpleasant.
Old dude club in the back row.
I really wonder what people who have never seen Pride the Hero are gonna think of this exchange. If you have not seen Pride the Hero, sorry to disappoint you(?) but taxi is actually not a metaphor.Ā
I wonder if Kakeru would have really kept hounding Taiga if he didnāt pay him back. Itās not like Kakeru needs the money. I think itās more that Taiga just has his pride and wants to do right by Kakeru and not take advantage of him. Or at least I like thinking that way.Ā
My second favorite line by Taiga in SSS.Ā
People at the cheering shows are likeĀ āGimme the apron!!ā
No, I have no idea why they decided to design Taigaās cousin(s) to look like Ann and Wakana.Ā
My third favorite Taiga line in SSS. I just love how perfect the timing is. Taiga just watches everyone walk past him trying to debate if this is really happening or not and then just HOLD ON WAIT--
Behold Yukinojo examining what I think is supposed to be the armor that made Taiga pee his pants in Young of Prism. This is the Easter egg I was talking about.Ā
I LOVE OZORA.Ā
Another great thing about SSS is learning how all of the boys have these amazing female characters in their lives.Ā
The first/only anime reference to Taigaās distaste for apples. In side material itās been explained that Taiga canāt stand apples because they are everywhere in Aomori. Even the sound of someone biting into the skin of an apple drives him nuts. Minato has used it as punishment before in Prism Rush.Ā
People in the theater like to sayĀ āDonāt forget the apple!āĀ
At the midnight showing I think the girl next to me had a brain aneurysm when she saw Wakana here. And I might of as well.Ā
At this part I always yellĀ āWAKANA DONāT GO!!!!ā
Just.... ahhhhhh Taiga being seamlessly inserted in the Rainbow Live continuity like this is just... kjlfjfkljfls.......
Even though I know in the logical part of my brain that Taiga did not exist when Rainbow Live was made, I still kinda want to go back and look for him in the background of that episode anyway. But I hesitate because I know I wonāt want to be disappointed with not finding him.Ā
Still, the idea that Wanana, Ann, and Kazuki all supposedly knew him from way back when is crazy and makes my heart warm.Ā
(Oh but WAKANAAAAAAA so sad)
So.Ā āGaudyā huh. Weāre goinā with that huh. HUH. āGaudyā I know for a fact is the literal translation you get when you look upĀ ācharacharaā in a Japanese-English dictionary. I have used it too... AS A PLACEHOLDER....................
Seeing this and trying so hard not to FUCKING SCREAM at the midnight showing was a moment for all of us. Taiga.... Taiga.................. Taigaaaaa................. I canāt see this without feeling it travel through every nerve in my body.Ā
WakanAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
Accurate description of summertime in the countryside of Japan. Everyone hangs out and eats copious amounts of fruit probably from a neighborās farm. Just go out and walk down the street and youāll come home with fruit.Ā
So this is Aomori city, the area not far from the station. When I saw this in the theater I was like, that looks.... kinda familiar. Then the next day I went searching for photos from my sideblogĀ @mdawnjpn and....
I found this and I just immediately started tearing up, like hand over my mouth trying not to cry on the bullet train from Tokyo back to Nagoya during that first weekend. I was there I WAS THERE.Ā
So I mentioned previously I got to Aomori after a 10 or 11 hour night bus. And I didnāt sleep for almost any of it because I just canāt sleep on buses. And I felt LIKE. DEATH. But I couldnāt find an internet cafe or anywhere to sleep for a while because Aomori city just doesnāt have a lot of things. So I ended up literally just sleeping on a park bench by the ocean for a couple hours. Like around here.

And I remember seeing them starting to set up the festival when I woke up and being like woooah where am I this is amazing. But.. Just like, since Over the Rainbow performs here every year I guess I must have slept through their show. Oh NOOO ahaha
Anyway
And here it is. My number one favorite Taiga line in SSS. Just like the way he says it
OVER THE RAINBOW
THE FUCK IS THATĀ
Ohhhh Taiga youāll know very soon......
Also notice the different colored tie. I wonder if this was his legit school uniform at the time.Ā
People hold up two concert lights and break them apart when Hiroās pride is broken in the first movie, and they do the same here.
Oh Taiga...... why is your pain so hilarious.........................
Sometimes I ask myself the same thing.
I love the contrast here between the overly realistic uncomfortable crowd, overenthusiastic Ozora, and poor Taiga. I love it. I LOVE IT. I WAS NOT KIDDING WHEN I SAID EVERY FRAME IN THIS EPISODE IS A FUCKING MASTERPIECEĀ
It took me two or three viewings to realize that Taiga is actually crying here. Or rather trying really hard not to cry.Ā
Iām not sure if Iām counting favorite Kazuki lines or not since he doesnāt have a big roll in SSS, but if I am this little āHuuuaahā might be it.Ā
Poor Kazuki. He does nothing on purpose to incite the storm that has brewed around him with both Taiga and Alexander.
Taigaās Mom is the fucking best. Like I said, I love SSS for bringing out all these amazing, supportive, strong female characters. Everyoneās Mom is great but Taigaās Mom might be best Mom.Ā
Or at least I thought so until I met Alexanderās Mom but the jury is out right now.Ā
It took me like five viewings to realize their watermelon switched to corn and I laughed way harder than I should have.Ā
OTSUKARE TAIGA
I loved seeing him be a big brother here eheh.Ā
Taiga why did you even ask. You know how Edel Rose works.
Shin just looks so happy. Heās a puppy.Ā
My goal in life is to enjoy everything the way Shin enjoys things.
Yuās AHHHHH MOOOOUUU in this scene might be my favorite Yu line ahaha.Ā
I donāt know why, but I the more he whines the more I love him. Thatās just how you know Yu is having a good time.
RIGHT
RIGHT
FUCK TOKYOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
AHHHHH I WANT TO GO BACK TO AOMORI RIGHT NOOOWWWW
Iām like 40% considering going back this summer.Ā
I live in Aichi not Tokyo by the way so if I donāt fly thatās about UMMM 16 or 17 HOURS ON TWO BUSES BUT
Okay okay okay. So NOW itās āstreet styleā huh. Well what the fuck was with that wholeĀ āSolid Styleā thing in episode 1 then? I guess the translator didnāt realize they were literally talking about street dance? Like WHAT? Or did they just forget?
And you know what actually this kinda pisses me off more, because the least they could do is keep it consistent.Ā
Because now that whole important line where Shin actually explains it for the first time in the main canon MAKES NO FUCKING SENSE ANYMOREĀ
ALSO
WHY IS ACADEMY CAPITALIZED AND STREET NOT
WHY
FOR FUCKS SAKE IM GONNA K--
Taigaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
(Iām OK now.)
Giving him a shojo reaction here was a choice. They didnāt have to. It was a deliberate choice. To portray Taigaās feelings for Kazuki. Ahhhhhhhh
So remember when I stayed up translating this all of a sudden after I watched SSS Part 1 for..... reasons.....Ā
No I do not know why heās an apple. Well I assume it has to do with the job heās doing. And I do have a hunch from a creative standpoint but Iāll talk about that later.Ā
First timers in the theater always be likeĀ āR... RINGO..?????ā
NO YOUR ASS IS BIG
....Is one of my favorite callouts of this episode.Ā
AND WHY IS JOJI EVEN IN THE CAR ANYWAYĀ
At this point during the midnight showing I was like.... is the real villain of SSS just gonna be Joji going around casually inconveniencing everyone? ....Iād watch that.Ā
This is the storage area near the main festival stage where you can go and see the floats before the festival starts.Ā
Hereās what it looks like in real life:Ā

One of the few instances where I can assure you real life is just as good as the anime.Ā
For people who read my shitty out of context spoiler about how a character beat Louis for the amount of skin showed in a prism show. Wasnāt kidding.Ā
Tasuku kinda spoiled this outfit in the first day greeting show by saying something like how it was an outfit which fit Taigaās tastesĀ well (festival wear) and everyone else was like NO STOP--
But yeah. This show. This soonggggg
Taigaās voice is just SO. BEAUTIFUL. He has my favorite singing voice in all of Edel Rose.Ā
So after the first weekend I made a post to Tumblr about how I thought I had avoided getting any of the songs in my head, but then a certain one started CREEPIN IN...
IT WAS THIS
Taigaās song is both the first one to get stuck in my head, and the one that keeps getting stuck in my head the most often to this day.Ā Ā
I just love how he makes Nebuta floats of all his friends ahhhhhhĀ
Here are some more photos of the real thing..
It was raining the year I was there, and when it rains they put plastic over them so they look like snowglobes. Thatās kinda cool in itself though.
Iāll never forget seeing this for the first time, realizing what was about to happen and being like NO... NO WAY.... IS THIS REAL LIFE NO WAY IS WHAT HDHFKHFDFH;LSFHDLSHFDSĀ
Iāll never forget it because I basically still feel the same way every time.Ā
They didnāt have to set this up like a confession scene. But they did. It was a choice.
But during this scene at cheering shows, I am much less concerned with what Taiga was trying to say and much more concerned with prepping blue and green lights for.....Ā
Words cannot express how happy this made me. If you havenāt picked up on it already Wakana is my favorite girl from RL. MATTE NYAAAAAAAAAA
Oh look here. A GOOD translation forĀ ācharacharaā. One that I might actually steal from now on. Usually the best I can come up with isĀ āflirtyā, ācarefreeā, orĀ āshowyā depending on the situation.
So it seems at this point the translator finally understood whatĀ ācharacharaā actually means in the context of King of Prism. So of course, the logical thing to do here would be to go back and correct the previous wonky line where they usedĀ āgaudyā to make it consistent... right.... RIGHT??
Does Crunchyroll actually translate line-by-line as soon as the episode comes out in the hour before they post it?Ā
They donāt even get any time to edit it?
ARE
YOU
FUCKING
KIDDING ME
I dunno about you but I would wait a few more hours for fucking slightly more decent consistency in the translation BUT MAYBE THATS JUST MEĀ
OH LORD Kakeruās episode next week is gonna be A SHITSHOW.Ā
The sitcom ending to this episode is so dorky but I love it.Ā
THIS EPISODE IS PERFECT
FRAME IT
DIP IT IN COPPER
SEND IT TO SPACEĀ
DONEĀ
It was really cool to finally see the details in these festival floats in the ending since they go by so fast in the episode. Shinās has a rainbow!Ā I wasnāt expecting Masquerade, but I suppose it fits Taiga as well. And itās not that the Taiga version isnāt good but...Ā Ā
Itās just that... I.... I want the CD but I..... I already have three different King of Prism covers of it on my phone........... nnnrhg
So.Ā
I dunno about you guys.Ā
But basically my interpretation of this episode is that no matter what Taiga says....
Everything heās done...
It was never about the street style.
It was always
ALWAYS
about Kazuki
And that makes a lot of sense.
Kazuki spends this entire episode being an apple. Taiga hates apples. Kazuki is a personification of something Taiga hates. But it changes nothing. He loves him. HE LOVES HIM.Ā
I always questioned whether Taigaās feelings for Kazuki were pure admiration or true love. And now I know the answer. Probably both.Ā
So this ends what I know to be King of Prism SSS Part 1, as per the theatrical release.Ā
Next week is Kakeru and also the beginning of what I know as SSS Part 2.Ā
I donāt want to de-hype you guys that much, but I actually feel the Part 2 episodes are a good deal more low key than Part 1. But then again that doesnāt say that much for the King of Prism standard. Ā
I have been looking forward to Kakeruās episode being released with subs for the sole reason of finally being able to clarify a lot of things I didnāt understand about it. But after seeing the subs this week. HMMM.Ā

2. first anime crushkai from beybladeā¦ i had a typeā¦
3. favorite anime characterbruuhhhā¦ i honestly canāt choose
4. least favorite anime charactercan i answer this as āmost hatedā? bc i feel like that has different connotations.. so my most hated anime character is a tie between d*no g*ldzine and ashās dad jim callenreese because no other characters has ever made me literally gag/punch a screen.. thanks to them i now understand what ppl mean when they say s0mething made their blood boil. (and yes of course theyāre both from banana fish)
5. list all anime you have ever watchedwatched as in finished all of it or as in seen more than 3 episodes and vaguely remembers the plot?because if itās the former then: yuri on ice, haikyuu, free!, kaze ga tsuyoku fuiteru, tsurune, ouran highschool host club, death note, mob psycho 100, orange, showa genroku rakugo shinju, banana fish, hetalia, school rumble, sarazanmai (if weāre counting movies too then wolf children, tokyo godfathers, kimi no na wa, kotonoha no niwa, koe no katachi, spirited away, totoro)if itās the latter then: naruto, dororo, fruits basket, bleach, fairy tail, tokyo mew mew, noragami, fma, dive (i think thatās what itās called?) oremono, maid-sama, one punch man, attack on titan, boku no hero academia, no.6, mushishi, bakuman,ā¦ iām probably forgetting some but who cares12. anime that should get more attention from others Ā yāknow what, once upon a time i thought banana fish should get more attention, but then i realized that iām not a sadist. like, itās good, but it really did a fcking number on meā¦ only people who wanna get destroyed should watch/read it. mob psycho got a lot of attention, but i think it deserves even more :D ALSO CAROLE AND TUESDAY! THIS IS A CALLOUT FOR MYSELF!!! from what iāve seen of it, it looks like a masterpiece
23. unpopular character you love sakura is considered unpopular in some circles and i love her to death so :D
30. one anime conclusion you would change banana fish would be too obvious of an answer so Ā remember showa genroku rakugo shinju from the list above? the main character adopts the daughter of his ex and his best friend after they die. at the end itās revealed the father of her kid is that dude (said main character) :-)))) it was a good show and that detail just ruined it for me

what fcs do you use?
i feel like this is a callout post since the two years ive been playing him ive used tooooooooo many to count. but to answer the question:Ā
FC 1 is N.eels Visser, purely because he encompasses all the jon vibes that i see in my head. Kind of from hair to style to features. He is it. But Iām not really that big of a fan of model fcs because very limited resources but still heās the number one mood.Ā Ā
FC 2 is C.hris Zylka whom Iāve actually been using since I started this blog even though I did give him up for a while there he always comes back. He just has the best resources for Jon moods and also like he gives me the best of both worlds cos T.S.C. Chris is very canon seb mood while left.overs chris is for every angsty au in my head. Like how I picture jon in the human aesthetic is very chris.Ā
FC 3 is W.ill Tudor, I donāt know. Heās got runes. Heās pretty and tall. ( Literally the only requirements I gave myself to appreciate whoever they were going to cast. ) Iām not a fan of the show in any way or form but I appreciated W.ill and considering thereās anĀ āactual castingā for Jon now I kinda prefer him. So keeps him too.Ā
And nobody asked but if Xavier Samuel gave me more jon vibes in his other movies he would still be the main cos still my favorite fancast. But ahhh outside of Twilight, he just doesnāt give me the Sebastian vibes and its disappointing and frustrating.Ā
AND THEN just me being indulgent, because heās also pretty, and he gave me jon vibes in that one movie but also someone i never really use cos i donāt actually have a lot of aus where jon grows old enouogh for me to use him but ay Matthias S.choenarts for older Jon.Ā

FEATURE: Crunchyroll Favorites 2016, Part One: Anime and Manga!
Hoo boy, 2016 was a rough year (and that's putting it very, veryĀ mildly)--but there were a few bright spots, and that's what we're here to talk about today! Crunchyroll Favorites kicks off its fifth year with another three-part look at all our favorites from the past twelve months!
Ā The rules were simple: for Part One, only anime, manga, and related media that were released in 2016 (or received a Western release in 2016), or experienced a major milestone (like starting a new season or closing up a major arc). There's a lot to look at in Part One--let's get started!
Ā NATE MING (@NateMing)
Ā FLIP FLAPPERS- Finally, a modern magical girl series that steps out of Madoka's shadow and delivers something that's unique, energetic, and positive as hell. Callouts to everything from Fist of the North Star to Sukeban Deka to (of course) Sailor Moon are welcome for longtime fans, while still getting appropriately dark and moody. Cocona is all about the unease of adolescence, and Papika exudes the simple charm of Son Goku in all her pure, heroic glory. Speaking of...
Ā Ā Dragon Ball Super- I rarely get excited to watch simulcasts as they come out--I tend to wait and binge, but I'm there every week within a day for Dragon Ball Super. In 1995, when I was 13 years old, I wanted a sequel to Dragon Ball Z with Future Trunks coming back. Now, over twenty years later, I get to see a DBZ sequel where Future Trunks comes back--and the series feels even more like the original Dragon Ball. This is the real secret to eternal youth.
Ā Ā Yuri!!! on ICE- Yeah yeah, "fujo bait" or some other BS, you're just mad their fandom is more organized than yours. That says a lot to me--that a TV anime, a sports anime, can pull together so many people and get them excited, week after week. Lapsed fans have viewing parties, share recommendations, and remember why they were once into anime in the first place. This is what happens when it feels like something's made for you, and that's a wonderful thing. Yuri!!! on ICE was a pretty okay show, but it's what it symbolizes that means so much more to me.
Ā Ā JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Diamond is Unbreakable- I always say that JoJo's is like the original Star Trek movies--the best parts are even-numbered. Diamond is Unbreakable continues Studio David's glorious adaptation of Araki's mega-epic, bringing out all the style and soul and violence of Josuke and the gang's battle to save their town. New to JoJo? Start here--and buckle up.
Ā Ā Tanaka-kun is Always Listless- Anime comedies are pretty important to me--whether it's the sheer absurdity of Cromartie High School or the more low-key silliness of Tonari no Seki-kun, finding a fairly simple premise and then focusing on it is a good way to hook me. In this case, a lazy guy has to deal with his high-energy friends, and we learn that sometimes, taking it easy is the only easy way to get ahead in life.
Ā Ā Evangelion 3.33: You Can(Not) Redo- It felt like this movie was never going to come out here after its 2012 release, but holy crap it was worth the wait. After the familiar ground of 1.11 and the bold, assertive new direction 2.22 took, 3.33 brings us back to what Evangelion does best: raw emotional pain, horrifying visuals, and never quite trusting or rooting for anybody we see on-screen. What a ride.
Ā Ā Rurouni KenshinĀ live-action trilogy- Another awesome release that was a long time coming, this adaptation of my all-time favorite manga condenses the first 17(ish) volumes of the series into three movies, trimming some plotlines and making them all just work as dynamic, rough, yet stylish martial arts actioners. Thankfully, great fights and drama don't overshadow Rurouni Kenshin's sense of fun. Check these out when you can!
Ā Ā Thunderbolt Fantasy- Written and created by Gen Urobuchi? Voice acting by Junichi Suwabe, Rikiya Koyama, Nobuyuki Hiyama, and Tomokazu Seki? An opening by T.M. Revolution?! I don't care what you say, you have those credentials, it can be live-action and be made in Antarctica and still be anime as hell. As the only person I know who regularly bought ComicsONE's kung-fu manhua, Thunderbolt Fantasy brought me back to the days of hunting down volumes of Saint Legend and Heaven Sword and Dragon Sabre.
Ā Ā My Hero AcademiaĀ (manga)- There's always a certain point when a manga hooks me, and I'm in it for better or for worse. One Piece had Arlong Park (and later Enies Lobby). Naruto had the Chunin Exam. Hunter x Hunter had Yorknew City. Now, My Hero Academia's 2016 developments--and a very public, dangerous reveal and its emotional fallout--have pulled me in. I don't just say "My Hero Academia is good." Now I say "My Hero Academia is One Piece good."
Ā Ā Crunchyroll x Funimation- Competition's good, but everybody wins when we all work together. Funimation are the other half of what we do, and have been in this business a hell of a lot longer. Being able to watch brand-new anime subbed on CR or dubbed on Funi is the kind of thing I never thought I'd see, and I am excited as hell to be a part of this, and to see what good it can do for anime fans.
Ā JOSEPH LUSTER (@Moldilox)
Dragon Ball Super- Dragon Ball Super went from "this thing I keep hearing is poorly animated" to "my favorite show of the year" in record time. As soon as it was available legally I jumped into a mountain-leveling, rosƩ-tinted marathon of madness, and as of right now it's the best damn thing since DBZ. Super has completely rekindled my not-so-dormant love for all things Toriyama, and I can't wait to see where they take the series next.
Ā Ā Mob Psycho 100- I loved the One-Punch Man anime, but I'm pretty sure Shigeo "Mob" Kageyama could take Saitama in an unrestrained fight. That's saying a lot, but it's just another indicator of how much I adored BONES' gorgeously-animated spin on ONE's manga (which needs to come out in English ASAP). It certainly has some of the most creative fights of 2016, and that's a year that brought us the butt-battling of Keijo!!!!!!!!
Ā Ā Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World- On paper, Re:ZERO isn't something I should have enjoyed as much as I did. I read the first volume of the light novel series and found it as clunky and poorly written as most other light novels I've attempted (noted exception: Kizumonogatari), but the anime really hooked me. It's one of the few series I felt I was watching right alongside everyone else, and it never failed to surprise me and punch me in the gut when it mattered most. This one will be remembered fondly down the line, and here's hoping we get more since Tappei Nagatsuki is still churning out volume after volume of the novels in Japan.
Ā Also, Subaru is great, you just can't handle how devastatingly real he is.
Ā PETER FOBIAN (@PeterFobian)
Ā FLIP FLAPPERS- On a visual level, FLIP FLAPPERS is a fascinating tour de force of concept and animation, featuring regular bouts of intense sakuga and amazing environmental design in the diverse worlds of pure illusion all illustrated in a pseudo-classical style. For critics it is a cornucopia of satisfying references to fine art, science, psychology, philosophy, and spiritualism with visual callouts to a diverse range of media from Neon Genesis Evangelion to The Shining to Popeye. For the casual viewer itās a powerful story of adolescent discovery told both literally and through beautifully-rendered metaphor.
Ā Ā Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World- Despite the formulaic basis of Re:ZEROās story, appearing as one of a dime-a-dozen isekai light novel adaptations featuring a female harem, Re:ZERO proved to have some serious narrative worth. Not quite a deconstruction, Re:ZERO featured a deeply flawed protagonist in Subaru and an atypical narrative featuring a novel premise in Subaruās ability to resurrect from death. This gave the anime a huge potential for speculation, and created an entire community of enthusiasts and analysts who followed it from week to week to see what happened next.
Ā Ā ERASED- Halfway through winter season I was absolutely convinced that nothing in 2016 would be able to top the combination of subtle direction, emotional narrative, and unique premise of ERASED. The series masterfully invested its audience in Kayoās well-being, so for the viewer, the series became less about solving the mystery of the murders than the simple hope that this brave, unfairly abused girl could find some modicum of happiness in a cruel world. Satoruās altruistic quest, forthright concern, willingness to admit his own faults, and habit of accidentally vocalizing his thoughts made him a truly endearing protagonist.
Ā Ā March comes in like a lion- This show tells a story that's as difficult to look at as it is to look away from. The inextricable nature of the sources of Reiās joy and sorrow have created a narrow path he must walk upon just at the edge of despair. Studio SHAFT makes excellent use of visuals, employing darkness and deep water to give Reiās emotions an elemental quality that allow you to experience the suffocating hold that his depression has upon him, while surrounding the Kawamoto household with a warmth and childlike simplicity that represents the refuge their unconditional love offers to him.
Ā Ā Mob Psycho 100- Mob Psycho 100 may justifiably have a place on top 10 lists for 2016 simply for visual power of the anime alone. Like FLIP FLAPPERS, Mob Psycho 100 is a demonstration of what is possible when you let artists loose on a project. It also showcased ONEās versatility as a storyteller, strangely, by portraying the same type of overwhelmingly powerful protagonist through a different lens. Behind all the oddball humor and eye-popping art is the story of a boy who struggles with being normal, while everyone around him wants to stand out.
Ā Ā ShÅwa Genroku Rakugo ShinjÅ«- What we have here is one of a kind: a dedicated, generational period piece not only faithfully depicting post-war Japan, but doing so through the the lens of an obscure and nearly-extinct form of artist theater that is uniquely Japanese. Rakugo feels like the sort of soulful, arthouse passion project that a Hollywood director would have to put years of time in to build the clout to justify its creation. Its direction, emphasizing on gesture and expression, is absolutely cinematic, drawing out each emotional note of the melancholic narrative. The somber humanity of Rakugo almost doesnāt feel like an anime, and is a testament to the versatility of the medium.
Ā Ā My Hero Academia- The next up-and-coming shonen hall-of-famer, in many ways My Hero Academia has already surpassed many of its peers with its fascinating triadic rivalry between Deku, Kacchan, and Todoroki. MHA does a tremendous job of portraying its immensely charming cast of characters' pursuit of diverse personal goals that are equal parts altruism and self-interest. Most importantly, Horikoshi has tapped into the ethos of superheroes, creating inspirational figures that are intrinsically human, but saddled with the responsibility of representing something larger than life.
Ā Ā JoJoās Bizarre Adventure: Diamond is Unbreakable- Despite my many attempts to get into the series, Diamond is Unbreakable is perhaps the first iteration of JoJo that had something interesting to say. The slow-burn murder mystery set in an idyllic town and the many asides, notations, and references all work in concert to build the fictional city of Morioh into a nearly real place like The Simpsons' Springfield. With that hurdle passed, Arakiās stylized art and its amazing adaptation into color and movement by Studio David become an art form unto themselves.
Ā Ā Tanaka-kun is Always Listless- Maybe it was how atypical Tanaka was as a lead in a medium where protagonists are homogenously faceless, featureless, and altruistic that drew me to this series. The entire cast each have some sort of hang-up, but the titular Tanaka-kun just treats it differently (ironically) by treating them all the same. Tanaka-kun definitely has a lot of offer on the classroom comedy front, but it also provides a unique sort of iyashikei, or healing media, in which characters' idiosyncrasies are taken in stride and wholeheartedly accepted, even appreciated, by others. Itās this light-hearted dedication to the positive that makes this anime so dear to me.
Ā Ā Yuri!!! on ICE- Complaints about animation and 11th hour writing aside, I do believe Yuri!!! on ICE was one of the most important anime this year or perhaps of the past several years. Yuri!!! on ICE is a story meant to appeal to a much more vast audience than the more targeted content weāre used to, and it showed. It's created new fans for the sport of figure skating, reached out to the LGBT community, and represented countries that hardly see a mention in modern media. It was written for a global audience and it reached it. Only time will tell if it's destined to have any sort of lasting cultural impact, but in the present, at least, it has drawn some deserved attention to the art form.
Ā KARA DENNISON (@RubyCosmos)
Ā Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress- I had this show dropped on me by a friend with absolutely no lead-in whatsoever. I've had my fill of steampunk and zombies, so I nearly gave it the brush-off... but then I realized Mikimoto was behind the character designs! It's a gorgeous piece of work, and not at all tuned to the tropes I was expecting. The promise of more is incredibly exciting.
Ā Ā BAKUON!!- Motorcycle anime? Sign me up. It took literally zero arm-twisting to get me into a show about schoolgirls on bikes. Especially when one of them is pretty much literally the Stig. I haven't finished this yet, but I'm looking forward to watching the end very soon!
Ā Ā Love Live! School Idol Project (pre-2016)- Yeah, yeah, I'm late to the party. After lurking around on the game, I finally gave the anime a try to see what all the fuss was about. And I admit it: it's actually really good. It helped that I was in touch with the characters after playing on the app for so long, I think, but I really did jam with this. Looking forward to starting Sunshine soon.
Ā EVAN MINTO (@VamptVo)
Space Patrol Luluco- As Crunchyrollās resident Trigger fan, Iām obligated to put Luluco at the top of my list. Itās the famed studio of loony ex-Gainax dorks indulging in some of the most surreal, self-referential comedy this side of FLCL (the show where Luluco director Hiroyuki Imaishi got his start as an animation director). Not only does Luluco boast references to every Trigger property from Kill la Kill to Kiznaiver and cameos from Little Witch Academia, Sex & Violence, and 2016ās REAL Best Boy ā Inferno Cop ā but itās also a surprisingly sincere shojo-inspired cosmic love story!
Ā Ā Mob Psycho 100- I loved what I saw of One-Punch Man, though I never did finish it (I know, I know). Mob Psycho 100, also from webcomic artist ONE, has some of the same appeal ā superpowered battles, lush animation, and an absurd, slightly dark sense of humor ā but cuts it with a heartfelt coming-of-age-story. More than anything else, though, I watched Mob just to see what wild shots the animators at BONES would try next, and I was rarely disappointed. Mob Psycho 100 is easily one of the best-looking shows of the past five years; every animator gets a chance to show off their unique style, and even the most mundane scenes are infused with energy and personality.
Ā Ā ERASED- Itās rare we get an anime series I can comfortably recommend to my parents, but ERASED manages to capture the nail-biting cliffhangers and complex mysteries that drive so many popular modern American TV series. On top of all of that, director Tomohiko Ito (of Sword Art Online fame, go figure) crafts powerful, cinematic visuals without resorting to expressionistic anime flourishes. When it all comes together itās a captivating experience. The ending needs a bit more room to breathe, but even with a few stumbles at the finish line, ERASED is a series Iāll be recommending for years to come.
Ā Ā JoJoās Bizarre Adventure: Diamond is Unbreakable- I wasnāt super pleased with Stardust Crusaders, but Diamond is Unbreakable brings back all of the wacky charm of the first two parts of the JoJoās saga, EXCEPT WITH STANDS. This time Araki doesnāt hold back, introducing a host of completely absurd Stand powers, including: ātransform a person into a newspaper and read their life story,ā āheal people via Italian food,ā and āa real army but the size of toys.ā Itās also much smaller-scale, with a lot of recurring characters, many of whom are some of my favorites in the whole series. Though theyāve dropped the incredible Kamikaze Douga OP sequences, David Production makes up for it with colorful, high-contrast artwork that perfectly accentuates Arakiās manic sense of style. Iām sad to see Diamond is Unbreakable go, but JoJoās still has so much more in store.
Ā Ā Only Yesterday- At 25 years old this year, Only Yesterday is hardly a ānewā title, but 2016 was the first time we got it in the United States! Produced at Studio Ghibli and directed by Grave of the Firefliesā Isao Takahata, the film is a beautifully understated, lyrical look at a womanās life, told simultaneously through a summer spent farming and a series of memories from her childhood. Most of the movie is ordinary almost to a fault, but like many of Takahataās movies, it builds carefully and almost imperceptibly to a sublime emotional climax. Only Yesterday is easily one of my favorite anime of all time.
Ā Ā Belladonna of Sadness- Another retro release, Belladonna is the third and final film in the Animerama series of erotic art films produced by Osamu Tezukaās Mushi Productions. This one, however, is entirely directed by Eiichi Yamamoto (Tezuka co-produced the other two). Suffice it to say, itās not exactly what you might expect from the studio that produced Astro Boy. A medieval lord rapes a beautiful peasant woman, who seeks revenge by making a deal with the devil. Yamamoto presents the storyās gothic horror ā complete with Satanic rituals and frightening descents into madness ā with elaborate animated paintings and an incredible psychedelic rock soundtrack from Masahiko Satoh. Not for the faint of heart, Belladonna of Sadness is an arresting work of experimental animation thatās a welcome change of pace from the banality of modern anime.
Ā Ā One-Punch Man (manga)- Iām finally close to caught up with One-Punch Man, and Iām surprised I didnāt read it sooner! Eyeshield 21ās Yusuke Murata has a great eye for character design and pulls off some surprisingly ambitious page layouts, but itās ONEās absurd, childish sense of humor that makes the series stand out so much from its shonen action contemporaries. Saitamaās complete apathy undercuts every opportunity for serious danger or drama, giving the series a sardonic self-awareness thatās relatively rare in shonen action series.
Ā Ā And Yet the Town Moves- After a 10-year run, And Yet the Town Moves is finally over. Masakazu Ishiguroās decade-long manga never follows a single storyline for more than two or three chapters, instead constructing a deliberately out-of-order series of episodic comedy vignettes about a small Japanese town and the grossly out-of-place maid cafĆ© at its center. What always made And Yet the Town Moves a joy to go back to was Ishiguroās ability to weave endless strings of jokes at his charactersā expense, all while painting a picture of a tight-knit community of decent, lovable folks both old and young. Appropriately for a sitcom that consistently shuns sentimentality in favor of comedy, the final chapter ends with just another dumb joke.
Ā Ā The Gods Lie.- Lots of anime and manga feature children as the main characters, but itās rare that these stories really tackle what it means to be a child in modern society. The Gods Lie, on the other hand, tackles it head on with the story of three kids ā the oldest of whom are in 6th grade ā who live alone in an abandoned house for a summer. Thereās a fair bit of high drama in this single book (an absentee father, a sick, elderly soccer coach) but The Gods Lie communicates far more about how how societies nurture and shelter their children through showcasing the fractured but functional surrogate family that the three kids form for each other.
Ā Ā The Osamu Tezuka Story- Though itās sometimes a little too detailed for its own good, The Osamu Tezuka Story is an invaluable book for anyone like me whoās obsessed with the life and work of Osamu Tezuka, the āGod of Mangaā who created Astro Boy and revolutionized both the postwar manga and anime industries. In manga form, author Toshio Ban lays out Tezukaās life from his schoolboy days sketching in the margins of notebooks to his death in 1989, pulling from memoirs, interviews, and personal accounts from those who knew him best. Tezuka loved to write manga epics about the lives of heroes and historical figures, so itās fitting that heād get immortalized in his own manga biography.

One Piece- 2016 was another great year for the One Piece manga, as the Straw Hats finally did something fans have been anticipating for years: take on one of the Four Emperors of the Sea! Luffy has been making waves on Whole Cake Island, home to the notorious pirate lord Big Mom (and let me tell you, sheās got that name for a reason). Next to Teach, Big Mom has become one of my favorite One Piece villains, largely due to her distorted views on family. But is Big Mom really so bad? After all, her dream is to sit at a table where everyone sits at the same heightā¦
Ā ERASED- ERASED was a critically received murder mystery and drama that took the anime world by storm earlier this year, and I canāt sing its praises enough. Regardless of your feelings on the ending, ERASED had us gripped, and because the anime promised an alternate ending than its source manga, we were all in the dark. But to me, the success of ERASED was its appeal to both anime fans and non-anime fans. When a newbie asks me for anime recommendations, ERASED is sure to be on that list.
Ā Dragon Ball Super- Dragon Ball Super really wasnāt on my radar until it was licensed in the States, and boy am I happy it was. As a big fan of Battle of the Gods and Resurrection F, Super was familiar territory, but this year I realized how good of a follow-up this show is to Dragon Ball Z; the power levels are higher, as are the stakes, and Goku is finally an underdog again. Itās good to be back.
Ā Yuri!!! on ICE- I know, I know, youāve heard enough about this one, but it deserves the nod. Yuri!!! on ICE is a special show for a lot of reasons: itās appealing to anime fans and non-anime fans alike, it was an original story (meaning, itās not based on a manga or light novel), and it told the story of two male figure skaters falling in love. Itās more than just a fujoshi dream come true; Yuri!!! on ICE did something really new, and thatās worth noting, even if youāre not a fan.

As has been my custom with this space over the past few years (okay, just last year), rather than highlighting the shows that made it into my top 10 of the year, Iāll be touching on a few of the yearās offerings that just missed the cut.
Ā Ā She and Her Cat -Everything Flows- One of the quietest and shortest shows of the year was also a serious contender for being one of its best. Based on an earlier work of the same main title by Makoto Shinkai, She and Her Cat -Everything Flows- is a peaceful, melancholic look at the life of a young woman struggling with the loneliness and sadness that can come with being out on your own in the world. Much like one of my favorite short pieces from 2015, the Animator Expoās tomorrow from there. She and Her Cat captures with ease and empathy a kind of wistful yet warm existential state. If youāve been in the main characterās shoes even a little (or, if youāre in them right now), She and Her Cat -Everything Flows- is like getting a nice hug.
Ā Ā Three Leaves, Three Colors- Studio Dogakobo is well-known for their bouncy comedies, with recent hits like Monthly Girlsā Nozaki-kun and Love Lab leading the list. However, Three Leaves, Three Colors (from the same mangaka as Engaged to the Unidentified) is a somewhat more demure affair despite sharing many of the same trappings. With standout bits of animation scattered throughout and great color work, itās a pleasure to look at, but it also boasts a rock-solid main trio of friends who play off each other in fun ways. There are even some almost surrealistic comedic interludes interspersed here and there. If you like moe comedies and missed this one this year, hereās your cue to check it out!
Ā Ā The Lost Village- Arguably the most controversial show of the entire year when it was airing, whether The Lost Village was genius, mediocre, or horrid varies depending on who you ask. Iāve weighed in on the matter with my own thoughts multiple times, but even considering how much respect I ended up having for the show I still find myself a bit baffled by it. That being said, itās definitely one of the shows I had the most fun watching, writing, and discussing during the year, and I think those who engage with it ready to be flexible with their expectations will find, at the very least, a very unique anime to add to their completed list.
Ā As for mangaā¦ I didnāt read any manga this year and I donāt think Nate will let me put Orange on my list for the third straight year, so sorry. [EDITOR'S NOTE: I would have been cool with this.] Pokemon Specialās still fun and good, by the way.
Ā NICK CREAMER (@B0bduh)
Ā FLIP FLAPPERS- FLIP FLAPPERS offered basically everything I want in an anime: great character writing, stirring themes, beautiful worlds, and an overall sense of whimsy that kept the whole thing fun and propulsive even when it was touching on topics like child abandonment and an inability to love yourself. It was an astonishing visual showcase and also a remarkably well-constructed character story, using its many diverse Pure Illusion adventures to consistently illustrate new things about its central characters. Itās one of those weird passion projects that make anime special, and Iām very happy it exists.
Ā Ā Concrete Revolutio: The Last Song- Okay, when I said FLIP FLAPPERS was everything I want in an anime, I sort of lied - I also like shows with searing political messages, and The Last Song was that all over. Depicting the breakdown of an alternate post-war Japan where superheroes are real, The Last Song was more reflective and bittersweet than Concrete Revolutioās first season, but just as clever, creative, and engaging. From its wild pop-art style to its smart application of superhero archetypes to the social turmoil of 60s/70s Japan, The Last Song offered me a hefty meal to dig into every single week.
Ā Ā Sound! Euphonium 2- And reaching the final pole of my anime preferences, Sound! Euphonium continued to be thoughtful character drama done right. The showās second season was messier than its first, adapting some material that couldnāt match the consistency of its predecessor, but the showās characters continued to be very strong, and Kyoto Animationās execution was just beyond compare. While many shows use the open canvas of animation to tell soaring, fantastical narratives, Euphonium demonstrated just how much magic and beauty there is in the personal and everyday.
Ā Ā Kizumonogatari- Oh, I also watched the first two Kizu movies this year, and they were glorious. Monogatari has been one of my favorite anime franchises for years now, but seeing Tatsuya Oishiās gorgeous take on the prequel novel still felt like a revelatory experience. Instead of the TV seriesā usual embrace of heavy internal monologue, Oishi fully realized Araragiās depression, panic, and sexual mania through sound and pictures alone, making for one of the most distinctive and visceral film experiences Iāve seen. The Kizu films are a remarkable achievement.

Yuri!!! on ICE - An anime that was born to make history. Besides all the pretty boys and ice skating, the one thing that will stick with me about this show is how international its scope was. Yuri!!! on ICE takes you around the world and offers a surprisingly detailed and true-to-life picture of international competitive ice skating. We got to see skaters from Thailand and Kazakhstan excel at what they love on the world stage. As compelling as Yuri's journey as an athlete was, any of the skaters could have been the main character of this story. In fact, this was something that director Sayo Yamamoto and mangaka Mitsuro Kubo specifically went out of their way to suggest. No wonder this series was so beloved around this world!
Ā Ā Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World- This series might look like a typical fantasy-adventure story about an insufferable male nerd at first glance, but I was really impressed by how much empathy the narrative had for its main character. Subaru is an extremely weak character in the scheme of things, and the world doesn't revolve around him. His struggle to connect with others and move past his self-hatred resonated with me for similar reasons that My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU and Neon Genesis Evangelion did. I also happened to really love all the side characters in this series, and there's enough left unexplained by the end to make me burn with curiosity to find out what happens next. Season 2 when?!
Ā Ā your name.- I got to see Makoto Shinkai's masterpiece when it came out in Australian cinemas in November, and I ended up loving it so much that I saw it twice in three days! In my view, it's the first Shinkai film that balances its macro plot and themes equally with the love story, and that might be one of the reasons why I found it so personally relatable. your name. was created in response to the Fukushima disaster, and I found its message of empathizing with others and treasuring every fleeting moment especially profound in that context. I also think that the film touches on something deep about the way we humans connect with each other, and how it's possible for us to emotionally identify with people we've never even physically met. For that reason, among many others, it has become one of my favorite anime of all time.
Ā WILHELM DONKO (@Surwill)
Sound! Euphonium 2- The first Sound! Euphonium was already my favorite anime of 2015, and the sequel again managed to make my list this year, as the second season was not lacking any of the traits and attributes responsible for the remarkable first season. Sound! Euphonium 2 kept its authentic grounded tone, which was accompanied by realistic characters and character-interactions, relatable drama, and background art nothing short of stunning. After a bit of a slow start, the season really picked up after the incredibly animated musical performance during the Kansai Competition, and in the end managed to tie up most loose ends beautifully. Iād also like to quickly mention Kumikoās voice actressesā unusual and mellow performance, which added a lot of personality to her character in my opinion.
Ā Ā Haikyu!!- Volleyball? Iām surely not going to care for an anime about a sport I donāt even know all the rules to. Boy, was I wrong. I picked up Haikyu!! around the start of the year, while the second cour of the second season was still running, and was immediately hooked. The show is extremely engaging, energetic, fast-paced, and almost always kept me on the edge of my seat during the matches. Haikyu!!ās cast is equally lovable (even the opponents in the show are great), and undergo some major character development throughout the seasons. I really did not care for Tsukishima at the beginning of show, but he soon became one of my favorites, especially after the thrilling third season. I guess I could say the same about Haikyu!! in general.
Ā Ā Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World- I donāt think I need to talk a lot about Re:ZERO, as it was undoubtedly one the biggest, if not the biggest anime this year. The show was definitely one of the more interesting takes on the Isekai (different world) formula in recent memory, and always sparked a great amount of discussion after each episode. And what can I say? I really liked to see Subaru suffer.
Ā Ā Love Live! Sunshine!!- Iām fully aware that Love Live! Sunshine!! is the odd one out of all my picks, and I would never objectively consider it as anime of the year, but it was my personal favorite of 2016. Even though I watched both seasons of the original, I never really cared for the Love Live! series, but that drastically changed with the start of Love Live! Sunshine!! While I never warmed up to Muse, I just adore every member of Aqourās, and generally consider Sunshine!! to be a step up in every aspect compared to the original. However, it wasnāt until my own pilgrimage to the showās setting, Uchiura and Numazu that I really fell in love with the series. Iāve done a lot of anime pilgrimages, but this one ranks among my favorites. After that I started collecting everything Love Live! Sunshine!! related I could get my hands upon. From art books, to figures to coffee mugs, I have it all ā I even play that darn mobile game every day. Yousoro ~
Ā Honorable Mentions: Flying Witch, KONOSUBA, Ajin.

FLIP FLAPPERSā Magical girl anime have encountered a bit of a dry spell in recent years. Thankfully Kiyotaka Oshiyama brought us a unique spin on the genre with his directorial debut, FLIP FLAPPERS. While FLIP FLAPPERS was a mishmash of different styles, ranging from campy shojo horror to Mad Max action, each episode worked harmoniously to create a cohesive emotional narrative. FLIP FLAPPERSā two heroines, Papika and Cocona, learn more about themselves and each other by exploring a slew of psychedelic and dreamlike worlds. Although the peculiar fusion of genres may not suit every audienceās taste, FLIP FLAPPERS had essentially what I wanted out of a modern magical girl anime: creative and experimental animation sequences, heavily allegorical storytelling, and fabulous henshin scenes.
Ā KIZNAIVERā Hiroshi Kobayashiās directorial debut, KIZNAIVER, was an ambitious project unlike anything studio Trigger had attempted before. Alongside scriptwriter Mari Okada, Kobayashi created a contemporary adolescent drama that wasnāt afraid to tackle some of the touchier issues in Japanese society. Throughout KIZNAIVER, its cast of misfits constantly grapple between wanting to feel the physical and emotional pain of others and questioning whether an artificial connection could create a sense of togetherness. This was the primary dramatic narrative of KIZNAIVER, and while intriguing in and of itself, it was truly Kobayashiās thoughtful directing and clever use of visual symbolism that elevated the material. KIZNAIVER may have lacked narrative polish around its edges, but it was one of the most visually poignant pieces of commercial anime to come out of the industry in the past couple of years. Hereās hoping that Kobayashi will have more directing roles in the future as his cinematic vision brings a lot to the table for commercial anime as a whole.

Sound! Euphonium 2ā The first season of Sound! Euphonium had always been a favorite of mine, and as such, the bar was set quite high when I heard a prequel was announced. Despite a rather lackluster first arc, the second half of 2016ās Sound! Euphonium 2 blew me away. The relationship between Kumiko and Asuka, two of the central pillars of Kitauji Highās concert band, embodied both the heart and soul of Sound! Euphoniumās web of emotional connections. It was beautiful to see their close-knit bond - built upon respect, trust, and understanding - unfold as the barriers between senpai and kohai were broken down. It set the stage perfectly for the resolution of Sound! Euphoniumās many other narratives: Kumiko and her older sisterās mending of their sibling conflict, Reinaās emotional maturing, and Takiās finding peace within himself over his late wife. With a soulful conclusion to an already fantastic anime by Kyoto Animation, Sound! Euphonium is a series that couldnāt have ended in a more satisfying manner.
ā
Mob Psycho 100ā Mob Psycho 100 is unequivocally a testament to the creativity and passion of the anime industryās top animators. Director Yuzuru Tachikawa and animation director Yoshimichi Kameda created an experimental take on ONEās source manga that showcased the importance of animation for storytelling and expression. While still operating within the confines of a shounen work, Mob Psycho 100 is an anime with a visual and ideological identity that does not confirm to the sterile and idealistic standard of perfectionism that is seen in many contemporary anime. āIf everyone is not special, maybe you can be who you want to be.ā
ā
Love Live! Sunshine!!ā Last, but certainly not least, is a pick that you may find a bit strange if youāve been reading the reasoning behind my other favorite anime of 2016. While I do value artistry in animation and direction, there are times when a fun anime with a cute and charming cast of characters is just as enjoyable to watch. Despite adopting a similar plot structure to the original Love Live! series, Love Live! Sunshine!! knew how to play around with its audienceās expectations, in some cases subverting characterization tropes and outright parodying the original. The girls of Aqours were a low-key bunch of loveable dorks who enthusiastically attempted to emulate the franchiseās previous group of idols (often times with hilarious or unfortunate results). Aqoursā playful banter and goofy antics quickly made me invested in their underdog soul search for stardom, while the intimate relationship between Chika and Riko brought a smile to my face. With the collective energy and excitement it brought to my life while watching, Love Live! Sunshine!! was one of my most pleasant surprises of 2016. Also, Dia is best girl.
