ONE'S BURGER [Shibuya, 2284 Sendagaya, Tokyo Sendagaya, One's Burger Business Hours: 8:00 ~ 23:00 (Open all year round)] Opened in Sendagaya back in December 1999. Despite being a modern store, the interior is designed to appear like a 1950's American diner, and is very popular with young girls for the "space" theme. The menu consists of mainly combos, which includes a hamburger, french fries, and a drink (around 800 - 1000 yen*). Enjoy the freshly made patties, soft buns, fried vegetables and potatoes!

Channel 5's charismatic reporter who has captured the hearts of all the people in the universe, the one who's dancing made the Morolians come back to their senses. With numerous popular quotes such as, "Something smells delish" and "Oh, not there~!", of course we're talking about Ulala. We spotted her at a hamburger shop that recently opened up in Sendagaya! It looked like she was a bit annoyed about the sudden interview on her break without any notice, but she still answered our questions to keep face in front of the staff. "What's it like at my work? Although my name has gotten more popular lately, my position as the channel's reporter hasn't changed. I still do special reports and get mad at the director as per usual. Oh yeah, there's going to be a new music program starting at midnight on Sunday now. It’s not going to be in a studio though, it'll be in a report with the automatic camera, so it basically wouldn't be much different from what I already do."

- At least that means your range of work is progressing. Especially since your dancing is so popular…

"Well, I was already dancing for the report broadcasts (laughs). But I'm glad it’s on location. I don't like dancing on weekends in the studio. Two birds with one stone in this situation."

-Do you always take breaks by yourself?

"Yeah. Being by yourself cruising at night is pretty common, and after all I don't have a boyfriend.  And I'm not looking to fall in love with someone right at the moment…Oh, shoot! Sorry, it's already almost time for me to head back to the studio!"

Space Broadcasting is really hot right now! Space channels can distribute broadcasts over super long distances, approximately over 1.5 million light-years in diameter through the use of the dimensional curve. They’ve exploded in popularity since Channel 01 was established 100 years ago, there’s about 300 space channels present day. Noteworthy among them is Space Channel 5, a channel that’s leading the rest when it comes to special news programs. The emergency live broadcasts of the Morolian Invasion and Blank Incident, “appearing on the scene with a special news program to solve the case,” appealed to people from all over the galaxies with the same charm the channel originally had, contributing the return of the special report boom. The ratings for Channel 42, which was also involved in these accidents, seem to have gone up as well (the Underground Pirate Broadcasting Station doesn’t release its ratings if it has any, so we don’t know about it). Let's keep dancing forward to the end of the galaxy.

It’s true that Space Channel 5’s rating haven’t been that great lately, a nothing-special broadcasting station. But aforementioned, the up-and-coming newcomer Ulala has changed everything…

Ever since she was selected to be the leading reporter for a special news program, “Ulala’s Swinging Report Show,” her goal has been to make it big as “the best reporter in the galaxy.” Director Fuse (43 years old) says “that kid’s dancing has a mysterious power to it that I can’t explain. I just can’t.” Savvy dancing and the reporter's spirit are the weapons of a woman!

SPACE MICHAEL (space michael jackson) BIRTH:  Etc. BLOOD:  Etc. GENDER:  MALE

500 years ago, he was revered as "Moonwalker" for his beautiful dancing, a Super Star that rocked the galaxy, a Super Dancer that transcended space and time. Despite his all-knowing and all-powerful superhuman abilities, even he wasn’t a match for the Morolian’s dancing beams. For whatever reason, he seems to really like Channel 5 and is under an exclusivity contract with it as a reporter.

Work of the Special Report Team Astrobeat (astrobeat) Astrobeat Jr. (astrobeat jr.)

Channel 5's special report team specializes in reporting situations that most teams wouldn't be capable of handling. It's a small group consisting of director Fuse, operator Noize (he's only 15 years old!), and their reporter Ulala. The spaceship report "Astrobeat" helps broadcast the news. Whenever an incident happens, the special report team gets ready on Astrobeat and then rushes to the scene. Once at the scene, the director can issue orders from the Astrobeat to support their reporter. Additionally, the Astrobeat has a small spacecraft, the "Astrobeat Jr." stationed in it that allows even more various ways to report incidents. In some instances, it can also be auto piloted and powered by someone dancing at the platform behind the cockpit.

Program check! check!

Oh! Good Morning A program that is very popular with space elementary school students. If they don't watch it every morning sometimes the space teachers will be made fun of by the kids. Before the channel was popular and when the ratings were nearly inactive, the audience rating for this always stayed at a constant 40%. This program is hosted by both Cecil Aroma and Brandy Smith, so don't forget to tune in!

Space Michael's Space English English is a common language in the galaxy! However, if you want to learn to speak English with some flare this is the place to do it! This is an extremely popular educational program broadcasted everywhere. Space Michael has been a native speaker for over 500 years so he knows a lot of phrases.  Learning and singing along with him makes you feel like you're on a dance floor! Heehee! Ulala's Swinging Report Show! A program that needs no explanation for its popularity. No one really expected that the first broadcast would be such a big memorable event, and people thought that the content at first wouldn't be that great. But once Ulala started reporting the rating lit right on up, with the energy building to the maximum at the end. The staff in charge of this book is also watching nonstop.

Honest Home Fishing "Honest Home Fishing" broadcasts every Tuesday at 7:30 pm.  It's a very popular program hosted by Xiao Xing Lum, who cooks the ingredients he catches in the first half of the program. You can also catch his cooking talent in "Space Cooking - Teppanyaki" between a section of space wide broadcasts, so you can look forward to seeing that too.

Channel 5 Kid's News "Channel 5 Kid's News" focuses on popular topics for kids on the weekends, and is being broadcasted every Friday at 4:30 pm with an air time of 90 minutes.  The topics chosen and information presented are all in a cheerful and easy to understand fashion.  It's the usual standards of broadcasting, but that's what makes it good.  A recent hit with kids is, "The Energetic Battle of Scholars: The Challenging Revival of the Naumann's* Elephant Through Genetic Reconstruction!"

What if Puddings popularity skyrockets even more in the future!?

19 years old. A former idol turned reporter four years ago, she's the charisma behind Channel 42. Her rivalry with Ulala is a huge point of interest and her popularity as a dancing reporter has skyrocketed. There's a rumor she'll return to being an idol, but that’s just a misunderstanding, maybe (*^ ^*). Apparently, people like Jaguar are her type? If that's true, then your male fans will try their best to be just as cool.

Program Check! Check! In regards to the quality and amount of music videos, they're the best in the galaxy, so be sure to check out all of their programs. But if you can only watch one be sure to see one of Pudding’s! Their "Space News Show" is wonderful, but that's not the only good music program they have, "Getting Up Early! Sound Check, Sound Check!" and "Music Hell" are just as great.

Guide to Galactic Fashion Trends 42 A fashion program hosted by Pudding, who guides you to fashionable locations and stores within the galaxy. Since many girls want to be more like her, it’s easy to get why it's become a daily feature.

Hi, so you’ve probably seen this post or some of its permutations on this website lately! (The old version of this post broke because I mistakenly deleted it. Let’s try this again, shall we?)

This is a “RAFFLE” for a Nintendo Switch Lite and the poster is asking people send them $10 to earn a spot in the raffle, of which there are 52. People have already sent money in.

This post was made by user roboticwheelchair and the name which currently displays on their paypal is “Mick Garcia” - it’s very possible you’ve heard their story already from several weeks ago. User roboticwheelchair claims that they were physically assaulted for being a transgender man, and that they sustained a concussion.

The BAD news is that roboticwheelchair is a blog which has been on tumblr for a very long time, and used to belong to someone named Falum Gibson. You may have heard this name from their #justice4falum campaign ages ago. They are a notorious scammer and has been doing this since 2016. LET’S REVIEW (LONG, LONG, LONG POST AHEAD.)

Part 1: #BieberMeetFalum and Meeting Ed Sheeran

In 2016, Falum ran a Justin Bieber fan account on Twitter called @bieberfreezer (account has since been suspended). They began a campaign called #BieberMeetFalum by posting a Twitter thread about their disability, cerebral palsy, and how they had intended to meet Justin Bieber personally because his music was important to them. However, the venue he was performing at was not wheelchair accessible and Falum uses an electric wheelchair. They were trying to get the attention of him or his team in order to ensure they met. This was a reasonable thing to post about! Accessibility is a necessity. We know this. And they weren’t asking for money. Twitter got this the attention it needed and they were able to meet Bieber despite the trouble. (LINK)

Later on, they gunned to meet Ed Sheeran and succeeded.

Part 2: #TaylorNoticeFalum

In 2018, Falum was on Tumblr as user taylorsgetawaycarxo. At this point they still say they have cerebral palsy, but has also said they have COPD (something they later will drop.) Claiming that they are terminally ill and has 2 years left to live, they talk about how Taylor Swift is their idol and they want to meet her before they die.

This came right after they had done the same thing with Demi Lovato fans, claiming they idolised Demi and needed to meet her, so on and so forth. They ran a GoFundMe for this. 

The GoFundMe is now defunct, but the URL was “falumlastwish” I believe. Here’s where the plot gets a little lost, because the sheer number of different GoFundMes, donation posts, and meet-a-celebrity campaigns that Falum was running in these couple of years is... pretty wild. There’s a post from another blog here on Tumblr about the Taylor Swift fandom’s run-in with them. (LINK) 

Here’s a GoFundMe they ran from a music fan account on Instagram, where they were asking for help escaping homelessness. They raised almost 5,000 dollars out of the 10,000 they were asking. (LINK)

At some point they also ran a GoFundMe for a PTSD service dog. I���m not sure how much they were asking for this one, but they apparently made $880 off of it. 

Part 3: Ellie Elizabeth

This part is a little muddled, because the tumblr blog connected to it has been deleted and it’s really difficult to find archives of the posts, but at some point in early 2019 Falum started using the blog ellie-elizabeth21 to ask for money as well. The story was that they were being sent to conversion therapy for being bisexual by their father, who had them deemed legally mentally incompetent. Further stories they posted about were potential evictions, needs for grocery money, etc.

“Ellie” also ran a GoFundMe to escape conversion therapy. Although the person running the campaign was listed as Ellie Elizabeth, the “beneficiary” listed on the campaign is Falum Gibson, proving that Ellie was another pseudonym - just a better hidden one. Here’s the link to that GoFundMe, where you can see it for yourself. (LINK)

This was Ellie Elizabeth’s PayPal account at the time, I believe? And anyway, you might note that they apparently made nearly $6,500 on this account.

Part 4: #Justice4Falum

Now in November of 2019, Falum moved away from the world of Fan Internet and decided to try out something new. They made the blog roboticwheelchair in September of 2019 and reblogged a photoset of cats to it, which for a while was the only thing on the blog besides the donation post they initially made. They’ve gone through a cycle of reblogging and deleting things there, basically clearing out the blog every couple of weeks to make a new post.

At this point they were also @falumgibson on Twitter. The account has since been locked. This is when they posted a GoFundMe describing medical abuse they were allegedly undergoing at the Ottawa Hospital. Weird side note, this GoFundMe is still running and can be donated to, though obviously I’m recommending you don’t do so. (LINK)

They made several donation posts on Tumblr about this campaign, frequently linking it or their PayPal account and asking people to donate. Sometimes it was to go directly to their legal fund for this lawsuit, other times they were asking for money for medications or other immediate costs.

Side note, they had claimed to be in the hospital since August of 2019 due to suicidal ideation and claimed they had been psych warded. From what I can tell, the Ottawa Hospital General Campus they claimed to be hospitalised at does not actually have a psychiatric ward. It has a mental health team, but they appear to do outpatient work. It’s not really clear what they were in the hospital for at this point.

#Justice4Falum was originally about fundraising for a place to live because apparently they were in danger of being forced to leave the hospital due to homelessness. Later on they turned it into a legal fund to sue the hospital for mistreatment.

Part 5: Further Fundraising, Coming Out As Trans

While Falum was in the hospital, they started identifying as nonbinary. I’m not in any position to speculate about whether or not Falum is transgender, because that’s honestly not the point. Either way, they have started using their trans identity in much the way they use their disabilities - as a way to garner sympathy and trust, and to scam people out of money.

On their Twitter at this point, they did seem to have kind of a bizarre interpretation of how transition worked and appeared to be under the impression that the first thing trans men do is get top surgery? (LINK)

Shortly after this, still during the November that #Justice4Falum ran during, they began asking for donations to a different PayPal account than their normal one, because their stepdad was dying of cancer. There was a GoFundMe for this as well, but it appeared to feature their parents and was possibly not created by Falum.

No date on this tweet unfortunately, but right after that, they made a post about how they had been outed to their transphobic father and needed to escape living with him.

At this point, Falum has added several diagnoses to those they claim to have. In addition to cerebral palsy, they now claim to have multiple sclerosis and several mental illnesses. No more COPD, though! I’m very impressed that they recovered from a terminal illness!

Now that they’re out of the closet, in early December they begin making donation posts on Tumblr again and have now made a Patreon. (LINK: POST) (LINK: PATREON) Soon after this, they apparently left their home and became homeless, and started posting about this on Twitter and linking their PayPal.

In late December they posted on Twitter about having attempted suicide by taking 75 extra strength Tylenol. Warning for a photograph of their IV in this link. (LINK)

Not very long after, Falum returned to their narrative of being terminally ill by posting about how their multiple sclerosis (something they have only claimed since 2019, I believe) causes them over 20 seizures a day and will eventually kill them. (LINK)

Then they locked their Twitter account and decided to try something new.

Part 6: Connor Kay, “anontransman”

Enter Connor Kay. At this point Falum makes a new Twitter account called @ConnorIsTrans which eventually morphs into @anontransman. They initially link this account to their old main account, saying that they’ve switched in order to be openly trans on their new account because their transphobic father is stalking them. (LINK)

They continue asking for donations on Twitter, now with a Ko-Fi account called Connor Rocks.

They also post a story about an ex-friend of theirs spitting on them for being trans, apparently, and say they’re calling the police on her, which really doesn’t seem like something that’d be safe for a disabled trans person to do but whatever. (LINK)

On their blog at roboticwheelchair, they post stories about how they are being assaulted and mocked for being transgender. I should note that on Twitter they’ve said they are not out IRL and have not taken steps to transition.

Not only does this particular story sound kind of like the “down with cis bus” post, it’s also somewhat suspect that they allege they were called a tr*nny as an AFAB trans person, given who is generally targeted by that word. But. Moving on.

When the COVID-19 pandemic came around, Connor created a Facebook group for disability support. This was run by the Facebook account Connor Kay, which has since been deleted. It was the same account that they used to have and they’d not changed anything except for the name; prior posts showed it was Falum Gibson’s account.

It turns out they deleted this Facebook account because someone on Facebook posted about their years-long history of scamming people online. Here’s a link to an imgur album of some of the Facebook callout and the images the OP posted. (LINK)

So Falum, or Connor, decides to start anew with an all new PayPal, Ko-Fi, Patreon and Twitter account. At this point they begin to break away from linking these accounts to the name Falum Gibson and their past donation posts, although they are still using the same Tumblr blog. They change their Twitter handle to @anontransman and remove links to Falum. (TWITTER SCREENCAP) (KO-FI SCREENCAP) (PATREON SCREENCAP)

Then they tweet about how they have been diagnosed with cancer. (LINK) Then they begin asking for $100k to go to the US for treatment. (LINK)

Soon after, this Tweet has been completely deleted and they have instead started asking for money for top surgery. (LINK) I believe this is in reverse chronological order, but here are a week’s worth of tweets from them - all deleted at random times in order to make room for the others - asking for money for various reasons. Yes, this was all literally within the same week. (LINK)

Note the very last image of that album contains a reference to an “Amazon Raffle” - they were basically telling people that donations would win them a spot in a raffle for an Amazon gift card or something? It seems they moved on from the @anontransman account before the raffle could come to fruition, or possibly that they just deleted all references to it. Not sure.

In April of 2020, roboticwheelchair posted a specific donation post about being attacked for being transgender and sustaining a concussion. They said they did not see a doctor after the assault because they didn’t think it was important, so their concussion went untreated and because of it they were unable to get groceries. The donation post linked to Connor Kay’s PayPal account. It was deleted and reposted several different times, with basically the same text.

Part 7: Mick Garcia

This is a more recent post with the exact same story, now about their multiple sclerosis medication. The only difference is now that the PayPal link sends you to the PayPal of Mick Garcia. Mick Garcia has a different PayPal username than Falum, Ellie, and Connor did.

On April 12th, the @anontransman account deactivated after Falum, or Ellie, or Connor, or Mick decided to leave Twitter. Then yesterday on April 19th, it reactivated and they tweeted once again.

However, around this same time, another Twitter account under the name Mick Garcia with an icon @anontransman used to use and a very similar tone/style cropped up.

The Mick Garcia account has not tweeted yet, as it appears that they may be staying with @anontransman for their current purposes, but it appears that for some reason or another they’ve decided to start going by Mick Garcia now.

I guess it’s probably relevant to note that while I suppose there are probably some white people out there with the last name Garcia, Falum is really seriously white and it’s suspect they would pick out Garcia as a pseudonym, whether they list “white” in their Twitter bio or not.

More from the current state of the roboticwheelchair blog includes many, many posts where they’re either reposting their own petitions or basically grabbing for as many followers as possible. You can probably guess why. (LINK)

Finally, The Switch Raffle

Literally today, April 20th, roboticwheelchair posted something that is allegedly a raffle. They claim to be giving away a Nintendo Switch Lite to a lucky winner. There are 52 slots in the raffle; they are asking that people send them $10 over PayPal in order to enter. They’re also claiming this is to further fundraise for their medication.

They are claiming their doctor has put them on an MS medication that costs $450 every two weeks. (Note that if they’re trying to make money for that right now and also going to buy a Switch for the winner, than they’d only have about half of that at the end? The Switch Lite is about $260 in Canada and their total earnings from a full raffle would be $520.)

You should not give money to them for this raffle, or for any reason. The reason I’m compiling all of this is because after months of seeing them pull this scam over and over again, they’re now promising people an actual product that given their history, I would say they are highly unlikely to deliver.

Given their past, it is most likely they will delete this raffle once they have the money they want, and refuse to allude to it ever again. Or maybe they’ll just disappear! Or hell, maybe they’ll have some kind of nebulous problem ordering the Switch when someone wins, and that’ll be that.

But it’s clear based on this history, I hope, that Falum or Ellie or Connor or Mick has a long history of taking lots and lots of money from strangers online. Like, a lot of money. My estimate is that they’ve made over $15k on this, and that’s exclusively based off of the visible numbers on their GoFundMes and Ko-Fi accounts.

Please do not give this person your money. They are not trustworthy. There are other people who need it - like you, or maybe like, someone you personally know and not some complete stranger who keeps telling people they’re terminally ill so they can meet a cool musician.

Disclaimer

I’ve compiled all of this information to the best of my ability, but I am just one person and it took a lot of digging due to the deleted accounts involved.

Falum is actually disabled; I believe they do have cerebral palsy and may have other disabilities. I do not know if they really have MS, but it’s hard to trust them because they previously lied about having terminal COPD.

I have no idea if Falum is really transgender or not. They have apparently taken no concrete steps to transition, which I know means very little. That being said, if they are transgender, they are leveraging their identity in dangerous ways against other people for money and sympathy. Their stories about being assaulted by strangers for being transgender are highly suspect, given their lack of transition and the fact that the scenarios they describe are highly cliche.

Finally, I’m not trying to harass Falum or threaten them in any way. I don’t know them. If they’re interested in talking candidly about what they have been doing all these years and why, that’s fine. I would honestly love to understand, but at this point it seems like the only thing they can do is apologise for their dishonesty and stop doing this.

sometimes when you remove doubles from the entire mesh, it makes weird shadows (you can see them in solid mode) that are super dark. Edge splitting gets rid of them without causing a seam to show in the mesh

2018 July Update

Wow! End of July already? (need a new opener)

I've been keeping up a steady work flow. I'd hope to be done with Chapter 2 entirely by end of July, but we've only managed "mostly done" status. Similar to Chapter 1, Chapter 2 has experienced a HUGE bloat in the number of levels. The original flash game’s Ch 2 counted at around ~40 level files. In the reboot, the current level file count sits at ~130 for Ch 2.

One driving force behind the increase has to do with filling the world out now that the player can freely roam the map. Another driving force is that I'm taking the time to design better quests and story lines. Here's a look at how one of the quests have changed.

The New Getting the Bombs Quest

In the original quest, the player only needs to ask Lisa about Adar, and they will be taught the location of Adar's house. They then visit Adar's house and retrieve the bombs from the cave by his house. Viola - Bomb Get!

In the reboot, the player can immediately visit Adar's house upon reaching the second landmass without having yet met Lisa. However, they'll find that Adar has secured his house with a strong lock.

When the player does meet Lisa, they can inquire about Adar's locked door, wherein Lisa will introduce them to Garnet. Garnet is a new character who runs a babysitting service. And Garnet agrees to help the player on the condition that the player babysit her kids.

And the kids want to play hide-and-seek! Since the town is bigger, having the player comb the town looking for the hiding kids serves as a useful vehicle to introduce the player to some of the town's more hidden qualities. Each kid will also give an optional hint about the location of the next kid should the player get stuck. It's also a nice homage to the hide-and-seek kids from Breath of Fire 3 (one of my favorite JRPGs!)

Garnet conveniently returns just as the player finds all the kids. Her task complete, the player is now free to explore Adar's house, claim the bombs, and even read his diary!

The "New" New Second Dungeon

About a year or two ago, I had redesigned the 2nd dungeon (yay!). But then in the course of this game's long development, I had gotten better at level design, and I realized that the new 2nd dungeon was now not up to par (dang!). Which is why, in the past month, I have re-gutted and redesigned the dungeon again (uh yay... again).

It was too unfocused. I would say unfocused level design heavily plagues the original flash game as well. For example, let's study this odd magnet puzzle from the flash game.

The magnet is continually on, and pulls the key up and out of reach. The player hits the magnet switch which temporarily turns the magnet off. The key drops, but is impeded by 3 platforms, each one disabled by one of the other 3 switches. If the player doesn't disable the platforms in the correct order, time runs out, the magnet reactivates, and the key is kept out of reach.

While I like the idea and potential behind the magnet puzzle, there wasn't a ramp-up to it, nor was its potential explored fully. It first occurs in the 2nd dungeon once. Then it occurs once more in the 3rd dungeon. Spaced that far apart, the player is likely to have forgotten about the magnet puzzle mechanic, and have to relearn how it works in the 3rd dungeon.

If I were to do it over, all the magnet puzzles would be contained to one dungeon - adding to that dungeon's unique flavor. And there would be a simpler introductory magnet puzzle serving as a ramp-up.

The new philosophy I take into designing dungeons is probably best described by Mark Brown's video on Mario 3D World's Level Design (LINK).

Of course, dungeons are not always linear affairs. Some are more open, and thus I can't always enforce this principle. There are also fringe puzzle or challenge ideas that are too difficult or out there to fit well in the main dungeon path.

Luckily, with the traversable map and more open nature of the game, those ideas can still make it into the game as optional challenges.

(If you loved the arrows and ladders section of the tower level, you'll love jumping between wooden poles and dodging arrows - luckily, this area is optional)

New Music

This update was lacking in greenery, so here's a picture of Thomas's house from Ch 3. Thomas and Fran will both have new unique themes. Will has already scored one of the two themes, though who gets which theme won't be determined until we're further along in development. Give it a listen HERE!

Don’t dismiss these alleged ‘Call of Duty: WWII’ leaks so quickly

It’s time to shoot Nazis again, apparently.

The annual Call of Duty hasn’t been announced yet, but a set of allegedly leaked photos suggests the new game will return to an old setting: the second World War. The same military conflict that was at the center of the first three Call of Duty games, as well as 2008’s World at War.

The mystery begins with a series of posts shared across multiple subreddits including WWII, CallOfDuty, and CoDCompetitive all linking back to an Imgur page. The images shared there appear to be either photos or mock-ups of a poster and a SteelBook-style case for a game titled Call of Duty: WWII.

The Imgur page also links back to a YouTube video, posted on TheFamilyVideoGamers channel. The 14-minute clip shares a look at the email the images sent by “Anon Nymous” came from.

Here it is. The images start to pop up at around the four-minute mark.

Several of the images depict what looks like a seaborne invasion force. Spiderlaw, the video’s narrator, thinks that the images may be a nod to the storming of Normandy Beach in northern France or D-Day, as it is often referred to.

While you should lump all of this in under the umbrella of “rumors,” there’s some additional context that makes the photo evidence seem a bit more compelling.

Back in Feb. 2017, it was noted during an Activision investor call that Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare the 2016 entry in the series had “underperformed” because the game’s “space setting didn’t resonate” with fans.

The company’s COO, Thomas Tippl, went on to say that “traditional combat” would be central to the 2017 game. It’s meant to take Call of Duty “back to its roots,” he said.

Later in the call, Activision CEO Eric Hirshberg reiterated Tippl’s comments, noting that the Infinite Warfare setting “didn’t appeal to all of our fans.” Notably, he then restated the 2017’s game’s return to “traditional” and added that the idea had been greenlit “over two years ago now.”

That timetable a little over two years ago means WWII was greenlit sometime in 2014. Notably, Call of Duty: Ghosts launched in Nov. 2013 alongside the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One consoles.

Let’s assume for a moment that WWII is a real game. If it was greenlit in 2014, that likely happened before Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare the 2014 entry was released. Which means Activision’s forward-looking metric at that point was Ghosts.

With annual releases like Call of Duty, the quality of the previous year’s game is often reflected in the current year’s financial performance.

Ghosts came one year after Black Ops II, one of the most commercially and creatively successful Call of Duty games to date. Likewise, Ghosts saw big sales Advanced Warfare, meanwhile, saw sales drop by 27 percent in the year after Ghosts.

This, to me, indicates some level of creative failure in Ghosts. It was the first Call of Duty game to really start pushing the futuristic setting that was a focus in Advanced Warfare (2014), Black Ops III (2015), and Infinite Warfare (2016). Speaking as a fan, Ghosts felt off to me; everything felt like a backwards step after the excellence of Black Ops II.

I would speculate that Activision saw the beginning of a downward shift in 2014, just as it did in 2010 when it got out of the rhythm games business. Maybe the Season Pass and post-release add-ons didn’t perform. Maybe lower-than-expected pre-orders for Advanced Warfare caused concern. Maybe Ghosts’ success owes more to the new console sales bump than anyone gives it credit for.

All of which is to say: I think Ghosts created the ideal circumstance for Activision to greenlight a “back to its roots” game like WWII.

Activision’s Call of Duty games are built and released on a three-year development cycle, so the series roadmap was locked through 2016 by the end of 2013. I would guess that the publisher’s forward-looking soothsayers saw something in Ghosts that raised alarm bells and then three subsequent Call of Duty games with a similarly futuristic setting.

Call of Duty: WWII seems like the natural response to me. It very much brings the series back to its “roots” the first three games went with a World War II setting while also cutting away a lot of the futuristic bits, like jet-assisted jumps and dashes, that created an imbalance between amateur players and serious professionals.

It’s also worth noting: Sledgehammer, the studio behind 2017’s Call of Duty game, is also the new kid on the block for the series. Sledgehammer worked alongside Infinity Ward on 2011’s Modern Warfare 3 and then led development on Advanced Warfare.

The Warfare line of Call of Duty games have traditionally been an Infinity Ward thing, in the same way that Treyarch owns Black Ops. Maybe WWII assuming it’s real is a case where Sledgehammer is establishing its own unique presence among Activision’s stable of developers.

Just don’t forget: this is all speculation. Until Activision confirms Call of Duty: WWII (or some other Call of Duty game), we don’t even know if these allegedly leaked photos are real. I believe it, for all the reasons laid out above, but it won’t be fact until there’s a formal announcement.
