I saw this in twittee about whitevember and wanted to hear your opinion: "It's like a school cafeteria. You have all different races are creeds hanging out in there. A white kid slaps a black kid in the back of the head. In response to this, the black kid gets up, walks over to a japanese kid, who had nothing to do with it, and slaps him in the back of the head. Then, as everyone is informing them they are swinging at the wrong person, they say "I don't care" and keep hitting the japanese kid.

What in the seven shades of hell?

So, instead of addressing the problem the first thought was to make a blasphemous comparison to the cycle of racism within minority communities brought on by the instigation of white racists (if you want examples look into the racists within BLM and SAH that pointed at eachother rather than address the root cause).

Anon thank you for bringing this to my attention because clearly people aren’t understanding the full problem of whitevember and why blacktober was never an attack against Asian creators.

First, this isn’t even remotely similar to what Blacktober and whitevember are. Blacktober is just a fun, month long trend for black creators to draw characters that look like them and share their features. This is not against the original asian creator, nor are they implying that the asian characters are better in this new rendition. IN FACT. The mere notion of that comparison is a racial attack that claims the black community would rather attack the asian community (which is not the intention of Blacktober and has been expressed plenty of times). When in actuality black creators are constantly fighting and arguing with white or even OTHER POC aggressors that either claim natural features are asian fishing (eyes, nose, etc), harass them for drawing them in cosplay OR physically cosplaying and many more disgusting things.

In fact, let’s address the main issue.

Blacktober is not and never was an attack on the asian community. It branches far from just anime and into other genres of media. It’s just an artistic portrayal of more black characters or their comfort/favorite characters in a appearance that relates to them.

Whitevember is a racist rebuttal (as most of these white specific groups are). They go out of their way to edit any POC characters or even edited characters to look white (usually blonde with light colored eyes) and claim it is the ‘better’ version. Many times with the reference to bleach (which was a painful process rooted in racist beauty standards that lead many poc in earlier times to try and bleach their skin to fit. They don’t stop at just the black community, they branch into the indigenous and Asian characters.

The reason people find an issue with blacktober is rooted in the racist ideals that black people should not take part in certain things. You cannot tell me otherwise when someone explicitly stated a black girl cosplaying a character was sexual because ‘black bodies are sexual’. When the first argument from white fans is ‘____ isn’t black’ despite their favorite cosplayers being white in predominantly Asian characters. They don’t like black people cosplaying outside of their race, but anyone pale can cosplay the majority of characters. Many of which racially ambiguous depending on the genre.

Now; why is it that the first order of business when black people take offense to blatant racism, the first thought is “but black people attack ___”??

Easy! The first thing racists try to do is separate their target race from others. Isolating them and painting horrible images and spreading terrible misinformation about them. Take into account the swift “Black people black wash Asian characters”. Blackwash means they are stripping the character of their Asian roots, replacing it entirely. Which is incorrect. As stated before, not once was blacktober a month to ‘better’ characters with blackness. It was a month to make characters resemble and relatable to black consumers and fans! Most (because everyone has a bad sees or two) creators have always been respectful to the creators and expressed that this edited or remade version was just something they did for themself.

In comparison, all whitewashed characters actively strip away the character. Many of which are racist creators who despise black people entirely and have voiced said disdain. (Many accounts reverted to calling black people slurs.) It’s pretty obvious the intent in whitevember when the first picture many saw was of a dark skinned pokemon character (who was a target to racists since her first moments shown) drinking bleach to become a pale, blonde haired and blue eyed white girl. That’s quite self evident. Not to mention within whitewashing, they compare black people making edits or drawings of non black characters as blackface or minstrels. Which is ironic coming from the racists-

In summary; that tweet was clearly just someone trying to push the blame onto black people in some preposterous imagine. This isn’t the first nor last time they will try it. In fact, this is probably the dumbest one I’ve heard!! They clearly tried to make the black kid an aggressor when in all honestly if someone hit another person and they SAW who hit them they wouldn’t go out of their way to attack someone else, no matter race. Second of all, it DOES NOT relate to the issue of whitevember. The comparison of black creators embracing themselves and drawing their favs to match them is not the same as literally bleaching a black character and calling it better!!!

Lovely Writer Episode 5

Since it was too late yesterday to write down my thoughts completely and I just ended up writing a small post, I'm going to write it all down right now.

And I have stuff to say, guys. So much happened yesterday in Lovely Writer. But the first question is: Is it "Aey", "Aoey" or "Aeoy" (I'm so confused)? Because they suddenly changed their way of calling him and there's an 'o' out of the blue. Why did they change his name after four episodes?

Nevermind. It was just something I asked myself the whole episode but I guess, no one really knows the answer.

Anyway, here are my first impressions and thoughts in general about Lovely Writer Episode 5:

Gene's negative flaw

Gene is the protagonist here but he is not the kind of protagonist you automatically like and especially not every part of him. He is cute and when he's with Nubsib, we only see that part of him because Nubsib finds him cute and adorable. Nubsib even calls him cute more than once. After episode 3, I said, they are pretending but I would change my statement into something like "they are just not showing every part of themselves" because pretending is something else. Preteneding is covering your true identity and it's different from not telling everything about you. I don't think Nubsib pretends. He just hides some stuff about himself when he's with Gene and vise versa. But at the set, we can see Gene is jealous. He is posessive over someone who isn't even his. It is not necessarily a red flag because he allows Nubsib to live his own life ("Go with him if you want to"). But he doesn't like the idea and the sight of Nubsib with someone else. He even leaves the set because of it. It's pretty clear he gets jealous and this jealousy gets adressed later on when he waits for Nubsib to come home but is too pissed to talk to him. Nubsib has to ask him and only then Gene admits it. Like I said, not necessarily a red flag or big problem because at least they talk about it and Nubsib reasures him but it can become a conflict later on. At least, when they are together.

promotion of BLs

Lovely Writer shows the behind the scenes of a typical low-budget BL and I believe it captures the BL industry quite well, although I'm not an expert. I can only judge from what I see on the outside. But with some shows, I've always had the feeling that things are not running smoothly and Lovely Writer just confirms that feeling. This show is very uncomfortable sometimes.

When I first started watching BLs last year, I was very overwhelmed and surprised by all these ships ot there. I was used to the marketing strategies of Marvel or Hollywood in general and European films. The asian way of marketing and promoting a show is different. It focuses more on the actors and their chemistry, not completely on the story in the show or movie. Or at least, I have the feeling it's different. Of course, different is not bad, just unusual.

I am still surprised of how much the promotion focuses on the actors, especially when it comes to BLs. People ship the actors because their lives and the roles they play get mixed up and fans see chemistry because they've seen the show. I feel like there is a blurry line between actor and character which leads to an immense personality cult. I know, it's because of the contracts and I believe they're the real problem because if you don't portray the actors as such and create a ship, their privacy and personal space gets invaded very quickly and in an inhuman way which easily leads to drama. Things will turn ugly at some point and that's not nice for the actors at all.

Lovely Writer criticizes this. Gene goes on Twittee an there is a hashtag full of weird fanservice and it leads to personal drama because he gets jealous. I don't think it's a rare problem. Because kissing someone as your work, because you are an actor, is fine, if you've talked about it honestly but fanservice is something different because it's happening in your real life and there is no line between your work and life. I think you know what I mean. So, Nubsib has to reasure Gene of his feelings and sees it as work but I get why Gene has a problem and I think it's sad that BL actors have to sacrifice their privacy so much because the industry builds this cult around them. This scene hurt me a bit, I have to say. And it will surely remain a problem between these two.

Also, invasive fans... Some fans tend to see you as a sort of object they can look at and touch all the time. Here, these two girls take pictures of Gene and he is aware of it but just doesn't know what to do to stop them without confronting them which is the only thing he can and should do. He thinks it will be over quickly but it won't. If you've once allowed your fans to do this, they won't stop, And we know, Gene slowly gets a fanbase. But he has to make sure they get that he is a human being and not an artifact in a museum. Luckily, Nubsib steps up saves him.

Criticism of NC scenes

This episode starts with the filming of the first kiss in Bad Engineer and I want to say something about it. This scene is very intense but just so uncomfortable and disgusting. What happens on screen is uncomfortable. What happens behind the screen is digusting. And Gene's reaction is really intense. I love Nubsib saying that it's nearly rape. I was like 'thank you'. Really guys, who thinks this is romantic? A first kiss when one of them is unable to move and fights the other one physically and verbally. It's not dominant in a sexy way. It's just creepy and taking advantage. There is no consent. And Nubsib being the king of consent thankfully says something but sadly he acts it out eventually because the director tells him to.

This kissing scene is the worst kissing scene I have ever seen. The setting isn't good and their kiss is weird. I know, it's supposed to be bad but their kiss looks so unpassionate lmao.

But the director is the worst part of it. His answer to Nubsib saying it feels like rape is the question "Don't you understand soap opera vibes?"

...

Of course, it's supposed to be disgusting but that sentence hit me because I got scared how many directors like that are out there. And I also feel sorry for Gene. He wrote that novel and put effort into it. Even though the story is not very exciting or different, he put his writing skills and creativity in this project. And now they ruin that art and smash it on the ground. I myself draw and write, so I kind of relate to him and it hurts watching. Gene only wants to write but it gets turned into something unadmirable and fussy. Now it's more like a rapey fanfiction someone wrote while sitting alone in the dark and reminiced about their weirdest sex dream. Let me tell you, some fantasies should stay as such because this is passionless and disgusting.

Aey and Gene

(I'm gonna stick to writing his name as "Aey" because I'm confused which spelling is the right one.) I think Aey knows Gene likes Nubsib because he always talks to him about that matter. And maybe he likes his novel but still, Aey is very manipulative. He asks for Gene's help. He aks Nubsib out in front of Gene and says "Gene is busy anyways" when Nubsib is not sure. He then reminds Nubsib of their "date" when Gene is there again. Clearly, he wants to show off. Or he's just weird. But in this show, no one is just weird. It will get clearer when the story goes on.

Aey

Talking about Aey, I have to say, I cried last night. Even though I don't like him, I feel sympathy for him. His family is so broken which affects him a lot. I feel sorry for him because he pulled himself together and faced his family again just to storm out crying. It's a nightmare. All those accusations thrown at him, but also the ones he threw, hit deep. There is a big tension escalating and he has very much pain inside. He clearly has a trauma and I hope we'll get to know more about him because his ex was mentioned and something very bad must've happened. Yeah, Aey is a very troubled kid. He is lonely, sad and lost and reminds me of Fiat in TharnType because he too runs after a guy who only showed slight interest in him. The feeling of being unloved and unloveable leads him fantisizing about the one who seems to be perfect in his eyes. And it will all crash down for him.

But who is Mhok? Were they best friends? Were they lovers? Is that their first kiss? It doesn't feel like a first kiss to me but I could be wrong...

What Lovely Writer does right

This show's promotion is exactly like I wanted it to be. No personality cult. That's a very important point for me because they are humans too and I believe it's disgusting to shed flashligh on actors so much. They are not a big ship, I guess. At least, none that I've heard of. They do some Q&A videos or behind the scenes stuff but not openly toxic behavior and discussions about private matters. They don't pretend to be in love for the fanservice and are pretty much looking like they are just doing their job.

This show is definetlely different and I love that part very much about it. So, I will defineltely keep watching and keep my hopes up.

I agree with you on palestine! The reason I don't do much on social media about it is because of similar reasons as you talked and also I don't think instagram and twittee have any space for nuance! I support palestine should not become "Israel should not exist it wasn't there before 1940s" because Israel was made as reparations for centuries of mistreatment and killing and discrimination of jews, also there are many many countries that formed recently. The leadership of Israel is crazy and violent and shouldn't be in power, but that does not mean we should say Israel is not a country".

But unfortunately many pro palestine people are just talking like Israel should not exist seriously. And they are not looking for reasonable discussion so I feel for me it us better to donate privately to help Palestinians than fight online.

Also a lot of people seem to take criticism of hamas as anti palestine stance as if you cannot be pro palestine and at the same timw recognize that some of the powerful people there are also bad. That still means Palestinians deserve better than having a neighbor who keeps killing them and a powerful organization for leadership that has its own fucked up agenda.

From what i see, this issue is complicated mostly for westerner, because of the shared history of colonialism. The reason why Israel exist in the first place is, as you said, caused as retribution and it feels like the world have to pay them. I can understand this point of view. (due to my limitation of writing essay in english, it will sound (or read) as very simplified)

But you also have to consider another point of view, from the others who have history of being colonized and enslaved also for centuries in their own land, they just can’t relate with that reason. it’s not complicated for them. Why should Palestine be the one who pay the price? Especially when west countries are who mostly at fault. This way of thinking is not perfect, but i hope you consider this pov.

If we’re talking about how Jerusalem is the holy land for Jews, well it also a holy land for Muslim and Christian. beside Islam is the 2nd largest religion in Israel, and Palestinian jew exist. if we’re talking about mistreatment, Islam also have history of mistreatment so i refuse to discuss this under religion persective. it’s all about faith and who am i to argue about that?

However, we can argue about history until the end of time and it will lead to nowhere. like, no matter how hard we try, racism will always happen from both side, the opressed can always be the opressor under difference circumtances but what happen right now is already totally out of line. I don’t need to mention the casualities in this answer because i bet you already know

This is not me saying country like Israel shouldn’t exist. As you said, the concept of Israel itself is valid, but right now, it’s chaos. The opressed are totally becoming the oppresor. I don’t know what concrete solution that can bring total satisfaction for both sides but right now, Palestine people are literally dying with Israel goverment keep destroying bulding like hospital, media office, covid lab ect. It’s no longer self defence and if you’re still pro israel goverment somehow, well, f*ck you then (sorry).

I feel that social media is really important right now because now the world can really see what happened in Palestine and voice support. Western media is no longer becoming the centre of information, and finally support for Palestine can be something major thus giving more power for country like mine, to force negotiation. I said, keep posting on social media, but only when you feel like you can make difference, no matter how small it is. Even when you can inform 1 person who personally have no idea. If your country already support palestine, then you're good.

I really believe you can voice support for Palestine without being anti semite, this is why i prefer Tumblr. Because of more diverse opinion, i can take some step back and revaluate my opinion. I don’t have to agree, i already Pro Palestine since 2014, but i can start trying to understand.

For Whispers of the Past, the weirdest thing I googled was probably: "puncture wounds versus lacerations" and "chance of survival after getting stabbed." Pretty sure I also looked up: "treatment for arsenic poisoning," "lethal dose of arsenic," "arsenic in nature," "broken ribs symptoms and treatments," "pneumothorax," "can a horse kill someone by trampling them?" and "how far can you fall without dying?" Basically, just a bunch of medical questions. For another story, I think the weirdest thing I looked up was, "can you take antidepressants and sleeping pills together?" More medical questions

The answer, incidentally, is that most of them aren't treatable if you've had a high enough dose to get symptoms.

Oh geez, I've looked up a lot of stuff. Recently I Googled public bathrooms and backs of toilets because I'm too lazy to get up and look at my own toilet. SAECKs/SAKs, the price with and without insurance, how it works and if men can use them. (Which was kinda sad that I didn't know they could although the resource was surprisingly hard to find, all except one link I found were about women using them.) I've looked up medical stuff like the different stages of certain cancers, their symptoms, treatments and other things involves like their effect on the person's mental health, if things like physical therapy is needed and the effects of the treatment along with the types of treatment needed. Also the cost with and without insurance, as well as cancer treatment facilities for people with low income. Various mental illnesses/disorders, the different types treatment, the effects of the treatment, as well as cost and facilities that offer free/cheaper treatment for people with low income. Lactose intolerance, celiac disease, gaslighting, trauma brought on by abuse. Things like the mental effects of children taking on adult responsibilities early on, growing up with lack of stability and human trafficking. Types of physical abuse that doesn't leave obvious bruising/scarring, psychological abuse (outside of gaslighting). Court stuff, like legal charges for attempted murder, court procedures. Caregiver programs for family members caring for someone with a severe mental illness. What actions are taken when someone files a charge for being drugged against their consent and the steps that need to be taken if your ID and credit cards/debit cards have been stolen, as well as what the police need do in those situations. Gosh, I can go on and on, just go on forever about all the things I've researched.

Most of it is medical and mental health related.

I feel this is fitting for some of the subjects we've Googled.

Wow, I didn't realize how much I looked at the cost of stuff. Like a good chunk of my research has been dedicated to what different insurances cover, how much, the base price without insurance and payment plans for people in the latter category. I guess the upside is I'll have some knowledge on the different insurance companies if I ever get to a point where I can get it, as well as payment plan options if I'm ever hospitalized.

When I was first starting to dabble in comics I was attempting this dark fantasy/mythology-ish story that would have some gore. I looked up stuff like "skull being crushed", "what does 'x' limb look like when being ripped off", "what does a corpse look like after sitting for 'x' many days". Most of my searched led me to the Best Gore site, which is totally recommended if you need references for your gory horror comic, but is NOT a site for the faint of heart. You will most likely get sick from the content... and the comment section.

Oddly enough, when I used to do the occasional stand alone gore-ish illustration I'd get 1-2 comments with people being grateful for the accuracy. It's... interesting that they would know what would and wouldn't be accurate with stuff like that.

Most of the time I am googling history actually - and mostly tech-levels of a given time and what was contemporary with what - guns and knights for example co-existed for quite a few decades, that kind of stuff.

Y'know I'm thinking about it more, and I'm realizing why I can't recall the weird stuff I've looked up. I usually ask people for information! I know a lot of different kinds of people who are more than happy to talk about their experiences, so I can ask them for first hand experience with a lot of situations where I then don't really need to look up much other than to maybe fill some holes I have. It's a different kind of research

Huh, the weirdest thing I’ve googled? Well, there’s the ever-uncomfortable ‘Googling certain body types for reference but probably looking like a creep to anyone who looks at my search history’. I’ve also googled very oddly specific things like ‘What is a 5-cube called?’ (It’s a pentaract). I’ve also watched videos that demonstrate how a bump key works, and to my FBI agent, I swear it was only for my comic. My search history gets pretty eclectic. I look up a lot of religious lore, and do lot of research into medieval times - mostly about the daily life of the average peasant. Also things like quantum physics, customs in other countries, and animal facts.

For a lot of gruesome or dangerous scenes, I try to aim the search toward movies and TV screencaps. Like, if you need to draw a crashing car, find a series with a dramatic car chase where they slammed a stunt car into a wall in high-def slow-mo.

The answer ended up being that if there was enough gas being created it was probably not enough to be flammable: aka it would not light up the room.

I ended up asking a friend who knows more about decomposition to figure out the answer, but I just wanted to make sure if a character brought a torch into a musty murder basement, it wouldn’t light them up like a Christmas tree

Hmm I think the wierd thing I looked up was whether Smile Therapy was a real practice? There are Photos too and I have a feeling it was real. Another thing I look up was; How would a real lady pirate dress in historical times? I did alot of extra research for some little visual hints.(edited)

I feel like Mob psycho nailed the creepiness of Smile Therapy because they were patients forced to pretend to smile, that's what I envision each time. That ep stayed with me(edited)

in the end you'll be smiling as a conditioned reaction to fear, not because it's genuine

Yes exactly, the original one was hard to record so the Google was ambiguous about its existence but there's photo proof that it was a thing
