We Need To Talk About Riverdale’s Texas Chainsaw Massacre Moment
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
This Riverdale review contains spoilers.
Riverdale Season 5 Episode 13
Nearly every episode title of Riverdale references a major pop culture work, usually a film, and the latest installment, “Reservoir Dogs,” is no exception. Given the fact that this hour features nods to everything from Saving Private Ryan (thanks to Archie’s hilariously anachronistic war flashbacks) to Coyote Ugly and Jesus Christ Superstar, it feels like a bit of a deliberate mislead to give the ep the same moniker as Quentin Tarantino’s breakthrough hit.
I think I know the reasoning behind this though – to keep the episode’s biggest motion picture homage a secret. About three quarters of the way through the episode now-disgraced FBI agent Betty Cooper finally catches up with the trucker who has been terrorizing the Lonely Highway and whom may be responsible for the disappearance and/or possible murder of her sister. She hatches a plot to pose as a seductress and enlists Tabitha Tate to tail her and the mysterious highwayman.
We’ve seen time and time again that Betty can more than hold her own against whatever evildoers the Town with Pep throw at her, but how is she against motorized weapons? Well, before you could say “Leatherface,” we discovered the answer to this question when the trucker came after Betty with a chainsaw. Watching Riverdale briefly morph into The Texas Chainsaw Massacre was a visceral as it was hilarious, an inspired moment full of the sort of what the fuckery that this series excels at. (Which is saying a lot seeing how the same episode also showcased the series’s second cult performing an Andrew Lloyd Webber song).
Far from being a jump the shark moment — and let’s face it, this program is impervious to such a feat at this point — the chainsaw-wielding motorist was completely in line with what we know about Riverdale operates. From the get go horror elements have flowed through the series like Sweetwater River does the titular town. From serial killers to Mothmen, nothing is off limits here. That said, it is a credit to the writing staff that they can through something shocking and new at us like they did here. There’s precedence though in the comics that Riverdale is based on though, and I’m not just talking about the horror-tinged fun of Afterlife with Archie and Sabrina the Teenage Witch.
Over the course of their 80-year history, Archie has regularly used horror tropes to entice readers, especially in their adventure-based 1970s comics. I’ve previously detailed these at length on this site, but to bottom line it for you just let me say that Riverdale, as bizarre as it gets, still can’t hold a candle to the strangeness that drips from the pages of its source material.
Yes, it’s absolutely thrilling to watch Betty knock out a maniac determined to mutilate her with the help of a carefully aimed wrench. Equal thrilling though are the four color comic book tales from which the seeds of Riverdale were planted. The events of the this latest episode are a reminder that Archie’s printed world is funnier, scarier, weirder and more complex than it’s TV counterpart could ever aspire to be. With its tonal shifts and unhinged plots, Riverdale is appointment viewing. But the comics? They’re always there, and hopefully this will remain the case for decades to come.
cnx.cmd.push(function() { cnx({ playerId: "106e33c0-3911-473c-b599-b1426db57530", }).render("0270c398a82f44f49c23c16122516796"); });
Riverdale Rundown
With Reggie and Veronica growing closer due to their new (and gloriously named) investment banking film Pearls and Posh, one wonders how long until they begin dating.
Veronica using her Posh surname will never not be hilarious.
One of the big reveals of this episode is that Moose is back in Riverdale, bearded, out of the closet and dating Fangs Fogarty.
As much as I admire the show’s producers for trying to tell a riveting story about PTSD, these war flashbacks feel so disjointed. (Which is entirely the point, although I can’t help but feel that the series is attempting to reach the pathos of the Archie 1941 comic and failing).
One of my long-standing questions about the series was answered here, we learn that Archie’s long-absent dog Vegas died while he was serving overseas in the military.
Betty musing that she should have stabbed Glenn harder was great stuff.
Cheryl’s Little Red Riding Hood-inspired outfit she wears while walking through her family’s maple grove is very reminiscent of her looks from the Blossom 666 horror comic.
Speaking of Cheryl, she once again gets the episode’s best line when she snarks “compulsion, thy name is Kevin of Finland” after seeing the younger Keller cruising in the woods again.
Kevin refers to Cheryl and Penelope’s church as a “Classic Blossom Scam,” which is most definitely is. (And it is also the least interesting thing happening on the show right now). But that doesn’t stop him from joining up. Kevin never met a cult he couldn’t lose himself into.
“He was my best friend,” says Archie referring to his oft-neglected dog Vegas. No wonder Jughead is such a mess.
Upon learning that there’s a dog-fighting ring in town, an incredulous Archie states “are you kidding, this is happening in Riverdale?” Umm yeah Arch, catch up.
Let’s here it for the Wild Foxes for their turning “Nothing But a Good Time” into an empowerment anthem.
Next week on Riverdale, we catch up with Jughead and continue to wonder if this show will ever get back to the Mothmen stuff!

very long post about podcasts because someone sent me an ask about podcasts and I love podcasts and you can't do read mores on mobile sorry.
Hello I just wrote this incredibly long post about all the podcasts I listen to and would therefore recommend. Before you ask, I work alone so that’s how I have so much time for this many podcasts, plus audiobooks and music listening and everything.
Comedy Shows I Listen To Every Week
Comedy Bang Bang - always good, always funny, and if you have howl or stitcher premium the month of tour shows they did last year is really the best thing the medium of podcasts has ever produced, I really love it.
Hollywood Handbook - the best podcast. notoriously ‘hard to get into’ because it apparently takes people a little to adjust to the mindset these guys are in, and it requires you to be a little bit of a podcast person and also to have listened to this show for 100 eps to get certain things but it’s really incredible if it’s your thing. Their latest episode where they designed cards is maybe one of the most accessible episodes they’ve done in a while and if you’ve ever listened to Spontaneanation the episode they did with Paul F Tompkins a couple of weeks ago had me absolutely crying laughing.
With Special Guest Lauren Lapkus - Lauren Lapkus is the funniest person on the planet, undoubtedly. This show varies pretty wildly depending on the guest because it’s so conceptual but it’s never ever bad. Also please watch the web series The Earliest Show she did with Ben Schwartz because while the show is really good, the hour of outtakes is one of my favourite videos ever.
My Brother, My Brother And Me - you already know what it is. Good show, fun time.
Spontaneanation - Paul F. Tompkins really is a gift and this show is very very good, it’s fun and silly and good natured which is a nice change of pace from a lot of the world. The recent episode with Lauren Lapkus and Tatiana Maslaney is really really good on both sides.
Comedy Shows I Listen To Sometimes
Hard Nation - this is a really good political satire that almost always becomes very absurd. I’ve stopped listening to it as much in the last few months as politics news has sort of outstripped the pace of a weekly satire which is insane, but the show is still great every episode.
Never Not Funny - pretty easygoing chat show that I’ll listen to depending on the guest, it’s always good even if it’s someone I don’t know.
improv4humans - Matt Besser is one of the worst human beings alive and I really wish literally anyone else would start a show with this exact format but for now it’s all I’ve got. Any of the Wild Horses eps are incredible if you want a recommendation.
The Adventure Zone - you already know what it is, it’s those brothers playing dungeons and dragons. I’m lightyears behind but I listen to this sometimes and I’m slowly catching up.
Victrola - Improv combined with tight editing in a similar vein to Superego.
Pappy’s Flatshare Slamdown - a british panel show in podcast format, very good.
Handsome Rambler - Hannibal Buress’ podcast, great if you’re a fan and pretty infrequent so it’s easy to keep up with.
The Todd Glass Show - Todd Glass is an incredibly odd man and his show really reflects that. There’s a live band and lots of code words. The recent ep with Paul F Tompkins is an all timer, please listen to it if nothing else.
The Smartest Man In The World - I have no idea what this show is. As I understand it it’s just Greg Proops talking to a crowd about whatever’s on his mind and sometimes they bring him books to read out of? Very strange but Greg Proops is so incredibly good at just talking that it’s a great listen.
The Comedian’s Comedian - Stuart Goldsmith interviews comedians about making comedy. Really illuminating if it’s someone you love. Bizzare if it’s someone you don’t like cause they’ll explain their incredibly involved process for coming up with shit and boring jokes.
Politics Podcasts I Listen To Most Days
Is It On? - Buzzfeed Australia’s politics podcast. Really good light wrap up of the week in federal politics mixed with interviews with politicians that are a lot more personal and engaging than a lot of political interviews.
AM - ABC Radio National’s daily morning show. It’s only half an hour so it’s a really easy way to stay in the loop on the way to work or something.
The World Today - same thing but about world news and longer if you’re really interested.
The Daily - The New Yorker’s daily podcast. Great way to keep up with whatever the fuck Trump is doing today without having to go scrying through half baked twitter takes every morning.
Podcasts That Most Closely Fit Into The Genre Of ‘Podcast’
Song Exploder - breaking down songs note by note with the writers, incredibly well produced and a pleasure to listen to.
Reply All - really interesting show about the internet and all the evils it contains. Their episode Very Quickly To The Drill is the most interesting story about locksmiths you’ll ever hear.
Heavyweight - Jonathan Goldstein helps people make peace with their past. This is one of the best podcasts I heard last year and I really cannot wait for a second season.
Black List Table Reads - full quasi-radio plays of unproduced film scripts from The Black List. An incredible show that I wish were more popular.
99% Invisible - great stories about architecture and design.
Invisibilia - similar but about your emotions and brain
Gunsmoke - oldtimeradio.com presents the original 1950s cowboy radio serial Gunsmoke! and thank god!
Radiolab - it’s podcasts baby!
This American Life - baby, it’s podcasts!
Shows That Are Finished Series
Wiretap - Incredible show that I can’t believe I never heard of before. Hard to explain but it feels kind of like if Seinfeld was a radio show and happened mostly via phone calls.
Reality Show Show - the Hollywood Handbook guys’ previous show. A lot more accessible and incredibly listenable for what you’d think would be a pretty time specific show about reality tv.
Dead Authors Podcast - Paul F. Tompkins as HG Wells interviews comedians in character as famous dead authors. Surprisingly well researched and incredibly funny.
Wild Horses: The Perspective - I am absolutely begging for more episodes of this show from Lauren Lapkus’ improv group because it is so so good.
U Talkin’ U2 To Me? - please listen to this show, even if you don’t like U2. In face especially if you don’t. Adam Scott and Scott Aukerman try to review U2’s discography but very quickly devolve into some of the most absurd podcasting ever.
Superego - tightly edited improv with music and everything. Incredibly strange in a good way and it takes a little to adjust to the tone but it’s a great show.
Mystery Show - still gutted this never got a second series. Detective show in the vein of Serial about incredibly benign mysteries like how tall Jake Gyllenhaal is.
Rum, Rebels And Ratbags - great Australian history podcast from David Hunt who wrote the very good Australian history books Girt and True Girt.
Not Available On Stitcher But Very Good
Dead Pilots Society - like The Black List Table Reads but for unproduced comedy show pilots. Hilarious, well produced and an interesting look at how getting a tv show made works.
Night People On WMFU - this show’s finished, but it was a late night call in show on some american radio station. Perfect oddball show for driving at night or falling asleep to.
Please reply to this post and tell me more podcasts you think I’d like, or even ones I wouldn’t but you do - who cares. If you reply to this post and tell me to listen to Cum Town I will block you.

Who Movie Viewing #1009 and Thoughts
This got so much longer than I expected. Good.
-The opening of the film, with the music and the graphics and the voiceover and the logo... it’s just so incredible. It always gets me hyped and I unironically love it to death.
- “It was a request they should never have granted.” Did Eight really try to blame the Daleks right then. They did... the least... in this entire film... Doctor you just made a deal with the Daleks and the Master at the same time...
- “I was finally beginning to realise that you could never be too careful.” That is never gonna happen.
-Can you believe that I almost forgot how beautiful the gothic Tardis is???????? Don’t worry tho, my love has been reignited now.
-Lee is looking beautiful tonight.
- “Is he rich? Cause where we’re going he better be rich.” Ah yes, this is one of those eps where they go to a dystopian human colony. This time its called America and has awful health care
-The shot of running down the hospital corridor in full ballgown with opera over the top is one of my favourite things ever and is also the most iconic thing I’ll ever see.
-Grace is looking beautiful tonight.
-Brian is such a dick. @Grace dump him.
-Sylvester McCoy literally spent half his time in the film lying down playing dead.
-I haaate gratuitous operation/hospital scenes, and this is horrible, and the fact that I still like this movie so much is amazing.
-Who decided the goo snake was a good idea because its so freaking weird and i do not like it. They should have just made it Crispy crawling around. Then again if I had to watch Crispy crawl into Bruce I would die right here and now.
-Here’s my boy. Eight is looking beautiful tonight.
-The first words anyone spoke to my beautiful boy; “Oh my God. GOD NO!” @the universe, what is your damage
-omg for some reason I’m not sure I had ever noticed Eight was humming to himself before???? As he shambles around the hospital. Is it the same music he heard when he died?? That would make sense
-Eight is literally the most pure and innocent person to ever appear on film??and all I want in my life is for someone to wrap him in warm clothes and love him.
-What does he even do all night?? Does he go Tenth Doctor-esque catatonic?? In the middle of a soaking wet, shattered glass-littered abandoned hospital wing????? I REPEAT: SOMEBODY GIVE MY BOY A HUG AND SOME LOVE
-The dramatic music when Eight picks up the Nixon mask gets me every time. AU where he bonds with it and wears it as part of his outfit, and everywhere he goes people assume he’s a serial killer.
- “What would you like me to call you then?” “Master will do.”  Bruce’s wife does not deserve to be kinkshamed in her own home, so I’m going to kinkshame the Master instead who absolutely deserves it, no matter where the fugk he is, for choosing the name in the first place.
-Underrated Gem from the Movie #78001; *Pete is freaked out after having freaked out because he saw the Doctor come back to life* Pete: Y’know what? I’m going home. Grace: Hey Pete, stop off at a psychiatric and pick up more mind-altering drugs. Pete: *completely serious* okay sure. Grace: *looks incredibly concerned*
-I’ve said it before but I’ll say it again; Eight’s outfit looks so comfortable. I want it.
-What the heck is with the guy just glaring at Eight in the hospital waiting room. What is his damage.
-This hospital guy is is crazy, burning all the evidence so that the operation never happened... he’s straight up gonna kill all of those visitors who watched it. This is an episode of CSI in the making.
- “You’re tired of life but afraid of dying.” Eight you’re like 8 hours old, no one gave you the right to be this Real.
-Eight covering his ears when Grace shouts at him is still the cutest thing ever
-What was that one post that was like “Brian took the couch but not his shoes??” because big mood
-Eight and Grace are drop-dead gorgeous in the scene in Grace’s house.
-The Doctor’s apparent ability to know everyone’s future is something added to the movie that’s just as odd and out-of-keeping with the rest of the show as the “half-human” line. One of the EDAs mention that Eight has a special gift to see people’s timelines and stuff that’s unique to this regeneration or something? That’s pretty neat.
-The Master being in the TARDIS when Lee enters means that (a) he knows the Doctor so well that he knows where the spare key is (and had to get a box or hypnotise a passer-by to help him reach it) or (b) while Lee did that quick stunned walk around the outside, he bolted in and played it cool when Lee came back in. Either option is kinda hilarious to me
- “It took me a while with the walking and the talking” Same.
- Lee is looking incredible in this Tardis scene.
-Eight when he gets excited is the cutest thing ever.
-JKLDSJCOSDIVDSCJO The most underappreciated part of the “THESE SHOES” joke is that Grace stares right at the camera like she’s in the Office
-I love the conversation Lee and El Maestro have when they stick their heads in the holes in the Tardis pillars cause that’s a great use of set??? It is literally a crime that this set was never used again and I want an exact copy as my new bedroom.
-In case someone doesn’t know, according to the EDAs the bats in the Tardis are called Jasper and Stewart and they’re twins and adorable.
-So do all ambulance medics look like the Terminator in America or
-Has anyone else read the Wife in Space blog, because the TV Movie one has the line “is the Eye of Harmony making it rain chickens” and honestly #iconic
- “I can’t make your dream come true forever but I can make it come true today!” Like my favourite line in the movie.
-So the Master and Lee don’t do anything while Grace and Eight get the bike. The Master’s like “Scuse me, I gotta wipe this fire extinguisher guff off. You follow them.” and Lee is like “sure bro, just gotta wait for this traffic.
-Talking of #iconic, the music in The Chase.
- “I wish I had my sonic screwdriver” “What?!” Doctor please stop throwing scifi terms at poor Grace.
- “I told you it was small.” “What is it they say?” “Yeah they say that on my planet too.” I can guarantee you that poor Ace Eight does not have a single clue what Grace actually means.
-So the Master just throws up over everyone now huh. That’s his gameplan now huh. Someone please put him out of our misery.
-We’re back in the Tardis and, Those angles..... That lighting........
-Have I mentioned that I love Eight’s hair yet? Because I love Eight’s hair. Also it’s kind of red in some shots and kind of not in others?? idk
- “We haven’t got any time to waste.” “But time to change!” SPEAKING OF ICONIC; “I always” *snap to close up* “Drezzzzzzzzz, for the occasion.”
-Eight: Lee, this is my Tardis. This is my Eye and I'm in my own body! Master: *the fakest laugh I have ever seen* I’m sorry Lee but how did you ever fall for the Master’s lies.
- “In 700 years no one has managed to open the Eye. How did you do it?” I mean, the last person to open the Eye was probably the Master as well? In the Deadly Assassin? (another face wowee. Just goes to show; to enjoy Dr Who all you gotta do is ignore the logic and “science”)
- “What do you mean it won’t work?” *scientist shrugs*   Mood.
- “WHAT DO YOU KNOW OF LAST CHANCES” “MORE THAN YOU” I looove the camera shots for those lines, with both of their faces n stuff.
-Lee: YOU LIED TO ME!    Master: I can’t believe... my own son...
-Just How Necessary Was The Master / Grace Kiss Exactly 2k17
- “I’M BLIND!” (Oxygen, 2017)
-Grace just saved the planet by hotwiring an alien time machine she has spent 2 minutes on... when will your fave ever
-This climax never has and never will make any sense, but it sure is editted nicely! Very dramatic.
- “What’s a temporal orbit!” Same
-Eight, calmly: Your life force is dying, Master. The Master, the most dramatic shit you’ll ever meet: NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
-Omg where is that post of just Eight’s leg. Because #iconic
- “You’ve both been somewhere I’ve never been” Doctor you were dead exactly one (1) day ago.
-Grace, Lee and Eight are such a beautiful Tardis team, and between the “I definitely wouldn’t live through that again” scene and the final goodbye scene, they absolutely go on a bunch of adventures together.
-Lee could 100% have just walked away with that gold and Eight obviously wouldn’t have stopped him. But he chose to offer it back to him,, when will your fave
- “See you round Grace!” I bet Lee goes to meet up with Grace again and acts like they’ve been through a lot together, and Grace very quickly cycles from “yes we have” to “wait you straight up tried to get me killed” to “why do you even want to talk to me” to “okay wait I have no one to talk to about this, you can stay”
- “Thank you Doctor.” “No thank You doctor.” What a couple of precious cuties. btw they’re both looking gorgeous and beautiful in this scene, and so was Lee. Just in case you were wondering.

You're living in the past, it's a new generation
Supernatural 12x16, “Ladies Drink Free.”
So you might have noticed I haven’t been around much lately, or posted any reviews. That’s because I’ve been too busy to watch any TV for about a month. I’m just starting to catch up on Supernatural again now.
This was an interesting episode because it had two narratives in conflict, one of which ended up working much more strongly than the other. The title pretty much encapsulates the problem here -- the reason “ladies drink free” is to attract male patrons by implying they’ll get access to the (potentially drunk) ladies. Everything about the notion is sexist and gross. Here’s a blackly humorous breakdown of the implied economic transaction taking place.
Anyway, the first narrative in the ep is Claire’s, which the writer, Meredith Glynn, seems to have done their very best to infuse with a feminist theme. The other narrative, however, is Mick’s teachable moment, which is at the expense of one dead young woman and one tortured young woman -- the “ladies” of the title who drank “for free,” so men would have access to them. Manpain, in other words; the second plot is all about the manpain. There’s really no successful way to merge these two different narratives, I think, but Glynn does give it their best shot.
Let’s start with the attempt at a feminist narrative, as that’s the bit that’s least successful.
The plot of this episode is very much by-the-numbers. We have two  potential male predators offered up to us, two  young, pretty female victims, and several male protectors. Glynn even points out how typical this is very early on, with the “Haven’t you ever seen a horror movie?” line. Yes, we all have, and so this plot unfolds exactly as expected when women are sacrificed so men can learn a lesson.
Glynn attempts to subvert this sexist old-school narrative by trying to make the episode a coming-of-age moment for Claire as well as the manpain-teachable-moment for Mick. The arc ends with Claire alive, and affirming her place as Jodie’s daughter and as a woman with her own needs as she goes off to be a hunter. These are good things. And there are some genuinely nice touches in this part of the ep too, like this:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(from @itsokaysammy)
You go Claire!
But these moments sit uneasily inside the frame of the typical women-as-sexualised-victims storyline, and there isn’t really a true climax for Claire’s arc in the ep, where she gets to kick-ass and take names, or even engineer her own moment of freedom.
We can see this thematically in the two musical tracks that top and tail Claire’s journey, without a proper bridge in between (the other obvious track in the ep is for Dean and Mick and it’s Save Me Tonight -- ugh). The first of Claire’s tracks is Make Me Wanna Die, as she’s walking into the teeth of the werewolf...
youtube
Make Me Wanna Die, by The Pretty Reckless
Take me I'm alive Never was a girl with a wicked mind But everything looks better when the sun goes down
I had everything Opportunities for eternity And I could belong to the night
Then your eyes Your eyes I can see in your eyes Your eyes
You make me wanna die I'll never be good enough You make me wanna die And everything you love will burn up in the light And every time I look inside your eyes You make me wanna die
Taste me drink my soul Show me all the things that I shouldn't know When there's a blue moon on the rise
I had everything Opportunities for eternity And I could belong to the night
Then your eyes Your eyes I can see in your eyes Your eyes Everything in your eyes Your eyes
You make me wanna die I'll never be good enough You make me wanna die And everything…
A very listenable song, but also one that’s very much about female victimhood. There’s something so icky about this being associated with Claire and Hayden, just because they’re young women who want to be able to spread their wings a little and are punished for it (by men). But I think this dissonance is made worse by being contrasted with the song Claire gets as she drives away at the end.
youtube
Real Wild Child, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts
Joan Jett is the real deal, you know; she’s who Dean Winchester wants to be. Look at that car, and her hair, and her everything. She gave us a glimpse of what female rock really looked like: kindness, feminism, no-apologies rock, and all-around awesomeness -- just look at this interview with Roseanne Barr. Tell me you don’t have a crush now!?!
Don’t get me wrong, This could have been such a great journey for Claire, if she’d had a proper moment of agency near the end. It’s just she doesn’t really get to legitimately have this journey into becoming the Wild Child -- this is no Lily Sunder story arc. Glynn tries to give it to her, but the real teachable moment is all for Mick, and Claire’s is a tack-on to try and reduce the otherwise choking amounts of sexism that would be in this episode.
I have really mixed feelings about this, because some of the stuff related to Mick’s lesson is interesting myth-arc development, but this treatment of Claire is so superficial, and I want more from the show when it comes to the way they use female characters.
And has Mick even really learned his lesson, or was it another fake-out? I think maybe he did, because it’s implied this was his first hands-on murder, and it shocked him, but the whole MoL is so slimy I won’t be surprised if he backslides or just lied. So Claire and Hayden may have gone through all that for nothing.
UGH.
Okay, moving on to the good.  There’s three main things I want to talk about.
First, Dean pretty much explicitly confirms my reading of the Winchester style of hunting, as they’ve come to perform it, is supernatural police work. I’m pleased by this, as it indicates we really are heading into an exploration of what it means to be hunters, and what hunters are not. I’ve wanted this narrative for a long, long time. And the reason I want is so much is...
Second, back when I was a fan of Teen Wolf, one of the things that had me excited to find out what happened was the back story which showed that the genocide being carried out by hunters was actually the main cause of the very werewolf violence they purported to want to stop. Every werewolf we saw attack someone had a traumatic history with at least one hunter in their past, and no stable pack.
I adored this implication that the hunters were mired in hypocrisy, and I desperately wanted to see this arc unfold and resolve. Unfortunately, whatever it was that happened behind the scenes in season 3 that ruined so much of Teen Wolf’s potential, also seemed to destroy any chance of this arc paying off. *still bitter*
But now, here is is again! Our typical selfish white boy, Justin, it turns out, would probably only ever have been an everyday sort of prick if the Men of Letters’ genocide hadn’t wiped out his pack and launched him into his serial murderer and biter-without-consent spree.
In other words, the MoL’s actions are the first link in a causal chain that’s leading to the kinds of deaths and suffering they claim to want to stop. This is not to say Justin has no agency -- he’s still responsible for his own actions and the effects they cause. But the trigger that set him on the path he otherwise probably wouldn’t have chosen was the MoL’s attack on his pack.
I’m super keen that we’re treading this ground, and cannot wait to see where Dabb takes it. SUPER EXCITED. (But it better not be taking us to Mary’s refridging, is the proviso.)
Third, I am beginning to think we are seriously going to get Three Men-Shaped-Beings and a Little Nephilim as the plot for season 13 (how apropos), because this episode was aaallllllllllll about Sam and Dean as dads. Like, Sam is officially a skeevy old dude, and Dean is one breath away from grounding everyone, and they both have explicitly dad-coded moments. Dean with the shotgun speech (which just plays into the sexism of the Claire plot, so I’m not a fan, but it’s still definitely dad-coded), and Sam with his conversation with Claire that helps her decide to own her choices and talk to Jodie about them.
I’m actually pretty keen about this development too. With a kid in the mix, there is so much ground that could be explored in terms of the legacy of John and how Sam and Dean (and Mary) are recovering from that and learning healthier ways to be family, especially with a supernatural kid in the mix. It opens up an interesting role for Castiel as well, given he’s likely to be the kid’s uncle.
So, as I said, a very mixed episode. The sexism means I won’t be rushing to re-watch, but the good things do have me looking forward to the next ep.
