You know what I’ve been thinking about them, and I reckon Johnny and Robby have hugged, but they haven’t done it for a long time. Despite his self-loathing tendencies and fear of intimacy we’ve seen little moments where Johnny allows himself to be open and is revealed to be an incredibly affectionate person. We’ve seen that with Miguel, Carmen, Ali, that soft moment with Bobby and he even hugged Amanda. This leads me to believe during those rare moments with Robby when he was small that Johnny did hug him, but he was always thinking at the back of his mind that he wasn’t enough and he was gonna end up hurting his son. As time went on that distance started to grow because Robby got older and realised Johnny wasn’t there in the important moments which meant those hugs meant nothing and he wasn’t good enough for his father. And Johnny hated himself more and more because he could feel that ever-growing distance, so they just didn’t hug anymore. Now Johnny is terrified of trying to hug Robby because he doesn’t wanna be rejected and Robby probably wouldn’t let him because he’s scared of it being an empty gesture and being let down again. What I’m saying is the writers better let them hug, everyone else is going around hugging each other, so they should be allowed to hold each other. We and they need that cathartic moment in the story so that we can truly feel Johnny’s progress and understand when that moment is earned.
