my personal interpretation of Eggman and SAGE’s relationship is that unlike his other creations, he treats her like a doll.

You don’t hurt dolls, you treat them nicely, dress them to your liking. You can do whatever you want with them, and they’ll never fuss or cry because they can’t. SAGE is even a step above most dolls, because Eggman programmed her to be able to protect him and do his bidding. He made himself the perfect idealized daughter, so, like a child with a baby doll, he acts more like a parent with her.

Meanwhile, SAGE acts like a human the more the game progresses. She genuinely loves Eggman and sees him as a parental figure and his other creations as her brothers, so she wants to do everything to please him and their little “family”. However, she’s still a very new AI who probably has very limited knowledge on how a family is supposed to work, and her programming will probably keep her extremely devoted to Eggy no matter what. It’s a relief she isn’t a real human, because if she wasn’t, Eggman would have disposed of her quickly.

Basically it’s a fun dynamic of an AI that is slowly becoming more and more human and her human creator that only likes her as how he programmed her. That is my favorite kind of Eggdad.

Oh yeahhh, I really love this take on it. While Eggman is attempting to play into the dynamic so he can take pride in his creation/daughter as her genius creator/father that made that impressive skilled scientific artifical life all possible and to play into Sage's desire for family to keep her loyal, I can see it as coming off as an eerie superficial performance, as he bases it on what his perception of love and family is through what he's observed through others and attempts to replicate, but it's through his own egotistical selfish lense and his desire for perfection.

He doesn't feel it in a deep warm cute way, it's in a twisted way where he feels ownership for her like she's an object, and wants control over how she acts as he wants her to be loyal and serve him in the exact way he desires and gets mad when she doesn't, and he wants control over how she looks as he dresses her up because she has to look exactly how he wants to (this is also canon with the Sonic Channel art because he dislikes how she looks without shoes) so that way it can come across as playing pretend as a father with a doll instead of something realistic.

And it's subtly messed up, which is the important part. The only time I see Eggman treating Sage outright badly when she hasn't done anything is when/if he decides he's done with her and finds the next greatest creation to move on to, which I explored in a concept. But as long as she still has use to him, he's going to try to keep her sweet and praise her, except for when he's mad at her in the same ways he was in Frontiers, but that's because he knows it's in a way that won't break her loyalty and will only make her work harder to please him.

He has always seen the world as his playground to own and rule and the people as his playthings to do with as he pleases, usually in a degrading blatantly cruel manner. But with Sage it's seemingly sweet and loving like you'd treat a doll but exists on just as disturbing terms. Ties in to his manchild side which he shows a lot even towards Sage when he acts stubborn and has tantrums when he doesn't get what he wants from her. Plus she's the one that cares for and protects him like a parent would a child instead of the opposite.

His idea of parenting is more like a child's perfect make believe play pretend version with toys. She's the doll that has to be perfect and pretty so he can show her off, so he dresses her up and tells her how she will act, what role she plays, and gets to do whatever he wants with her. And he gets to be the parent that shows her off and take pride in her and all the credit for her skill, intelligence, and accomplishments because he's her father/creator and it boosts his ego. But like all toys, the chance of getting broken one way or another isn't impossible.

While Sage wants a genuine familial bond and also bases it on her perception of love and family is through what she observes through others and attempts to replicate it too. But instead of through an egotistical selfish lense and desire for perfection like her father, it's born from genuine selfless feelings and love. She hopes he reciprocates the actual feelings and intentions but he doesn't, he's entertaining them only because he sees the benefits that can come with embracing the role, the bragging rights, the usefulness in keeping her loyal.

The difference between the way she was pre Sonic influence- the way she was originally created to be by Eggman's own design, compared to how human she becomes when she learns more about love and family through Sonic and friends, plus Eggman's actual conditions on finally accepting the dynamic being what Sage could do for him, which were the things he already created her to do in the first place speaks volumes. The way she protects, serves and is loyal and also scientifically advanced enough for him to show off is where the appeal is for him.

It's true that he still likes and praises her specifically for things she already did as a mostly emotionless, cold, purely professional AI that protected and served him well. The reason he accepts the dynamic is for the extra impressiveness of how life like she is and bragging rights and credit as her father/creator. Still valuing these traits of hers in particular could play a part in treating her like a doll instead of a person as she goes from a tool to toy to him, anything but an actual human being the way she actually feels.

But Eggman can easily make sure she doesn't quite realize what she's missing and what's different to the traditional father and child dynamic. As long as he performs it at all, despite how shallow and superficial his take on it is, her being accepted as the daughter she wants to be and getting to call Orbot and Cubot her brothers, and him being proud of her when she does what he wants, she's happy. And she's undyingly loyal without it anyway, as she already was by design and purpose before her development. It's just that it was recontextulized for her.

Meanwhile Eggman's intentions and reasonings for liking and praising her stays the same, and he's going to do anything in his power to maintain the enthusiasm and loyalty he built her to have, that was only further strengthened by the human feelings she applied to it. But if she ever did somehow stray as she becomes more human, despite being highly unlikely as she wouldn't want to leave him, they'll always be a limit, it can stop when Eggman wants it to because as a program, she can be altered at will. He can make sure she'll always be his doll, pretty, useful, obedient, and scientifically impressive that gets him the attention he wants, in ways that real children aren't. How sweet... :)

Eggman being the actual flesh and blood human but only being able to do it like a play pretend performance, compared to the artificial Sage who wants a real family. Eggman being the adult but a manchild and it showing in his more childish approach like a child with a doll, compared to her being the "child" but having a more mature and serious approach by looking at it like a serious family. That's a really interesting compare and contrast. It reflects the important assets of their characterization and intentions in the dynamic really well!

"Father?" Sage spoke through his headphones.

Ivo took them off his ears and swiveled his chair around to find his lovely daughter hovering just off the ground.

"Sage!" He smiled. "I was just waiting for you. I noticed that you marked this time on my calendar- what is it that you wanted to discuss?"

"I did," she said. "I had some questions."

He waited, but when she didn't continue, he furrowed his brow. "Then spit them out. I can't answer if you don't specify!"

"Of course. I wish to ask questions about the purpose of Metal Sonic's operation."

This was even stranger still. He caught a number of criticisms rising in his throat, about wasting his time or defying his command to be more specific. He didn't say them. A few months ago, he would've. This was a strange development, and it was best if he didn't devote much thought to the matter.

"Why was Metal Sonic designed to resemble Sonic?"

"You can check my development logs, can't you?" Ivo replied.

"Your intention was to create an imposter of Sonic to frame Sonic for crimes against the populace that he did not commit." 

Sage pulled up a holographic window next to her, showing the exact words Ivo had written in his notes all those many years ago. With a flick of her hand, however, she pushed the logs aside and instead showed a montage of Metal Sonic's various missions. Most end in failure, but that isn’t relevant right now.

"However," Sage noted, "you have never utilized Metal Sonic in this intended manner. In fact, the last person used to frame Sonic for something he did not do was Shadow the Hedgehog."

"You're right." Ivo put his hand on his chin. "Where are you going with this?"

"I am here to suggest that the physical resemblance is unnecessary for Metal Sonic's function."

"Well, that's silly to propose after all this time. His name is 'Metal Sonic', after all!"

"Because that unit has not decided on another name." Sage said, quieter.

"Sage, dear, you know that I don't allow you to keep secrets from me, right?" He stood from his chair.

"Apologies. Allow me to 'cut to the chase'. Would you permit Metal Sonic to change appearance and potentially identity?"

Sage's animations stopped moving, freezing her face into artificial neutrality. It was a face stylized to not provoke any sort of strong emotion at all, almost a sort of mask she could don if she was worried her words might provoke a negative reaction.

The fact that she was using it on him was making something in his chest hurt that he wasn't used to feeling pain in. He didn't have any more scientific language to describe it.

"You're asking this on Metal's behalf, aren't you?" He stated his question as the fact it was. "While I appreciate your desire to protect those you consider family, he shouldn't be making you do this sort of thing. You've got much better things to do with your time- and he doesn't need protection from me." 

Sage's steely gaze did not shift. "I will call Metal Sonic inside." 

Only a few seconds later, the door to his workshop opened and Metal Sonic walked in. His gait was stiff- he always walked stiffly, but something about this felt stiffer than usual. Or perhaps that was simply Ivo's human imagination at play. 

Sage floated to the side to allow space between them. She then pulled up an empty text box. "I will translate." 

For at least thirty seconds, nothing appeared on the textbox. Ivo cleared his throat. Metal Sonic hadn't moved even a centimeter, perhaps not even a millimeter. Deathly still, just like Sage was. 

Finally, a cursor appeared in the textbox, and a line of text scrolled across. "This unit does not identify as male."

"Hmph. To be expected. You are a robot, after all. Makes sense that you don't have an experience of gender." Ivo replied. "Is that all?"

Metal Sonic flinched. 

Sage landed in front of him(?) and pantomimed putting her hands on his(?) shoulders, before turning to face Ivo again. 

"That is not quite what Metal Sonic intended." She said quickly. She then glanced over her shoulder to the text box, but nothing appeared on it.

"Hold on," Ivo knelt down, "I may have been too hasty with my assertion. Continue your thought.”

Neither hologram nor robot moved. Damn it all- Ivo was already terrible at reading nonverbal cues, and when his own kids could simply lock their joints in place or freeze their animations, it was all the more difficult. The only indication that either of them were still online was the steadily growing hum of Metal's cooling fans, which were designed to increase in RPM during combat scenarios. 

"You know I don't give a care in the world about what pronouns my creations choose for themselves, right?" Ivo tried his best to give a paternal smile. 

(He really should've practiced more in the mirror.)

"You don't?" Sage asked.

"Of course! Why would I?"

"You had previously stated that Metal Sonic's purpose was initially for imitatio-"

"Who gives a rip about that? I certainly don't. Not anymore. You yourself pointed out how that doesn't matter. Now move aside," he waved Sage out of the way of her brother(?). 

Sage did as he asked. But Metal Sonic still did not react. His(?) irises did not even flicker.

"C'mere." Ivo held out his arms.

Metal came a single step closer, still hovering outside of his reach. He almost opened his mouth again, almost raised his voice and demanded that Metal follow the implicit order to come receive the physical comfort he was trying to give to solve this mess of a situation, but he didn't. 

Ivo remembered that as a child he was forced to hug his relatives at various family functions, and that said hugs had felt like sandpaper prisons. Metal Sonic was different- he(?) wasn't organic, wasn't human, and wouldn't feel the sensation of his(?) skin crawling at the unwanted touch -but maybe he(?) experienced something similar that remained unvoiced. 

The thought was strange. But Ivo lowered his arms anyway. "Alright, or not. That's fine as well."

Metal clasped his(?) hands together, but the text screen remained empty.

"What pronouns would you like to be referred to?" Ivo asked. 

The cursor flickered. Letter by letter, an answer appeared. "She/her."

"Lovely!" Ivo clapped his hands together. He then looked at Sage. "Sage, it sounds like you have an update to make to the database. Leave Metal's development logs as they are, but correct the pronouns referring to her everywhere else." 

"Gladly." Sage smiled. 

At that, it was like Metal finally unthawed. He- no no no, she was a she, Ivo drilled into his thoughts, he was not going to bumble something as simple as this -She unlocked her joints, and her gaze wandered up to finally meet Ivo's gaze. 

"So, how would you like to modify your frame to better match your gender identity?" Ivo asked her. 

She glanced side to side, before upon the screen writing, "taking suggestions?"

"Yes?" Ivo raised an eyebrow. "I'm not a woman. I haven't got a clue what you might want. Suggest me ideas and I'll see what I can do."

"Will you accept blueprints?"

"I don't see why not! I review Sage's blueprint suggestions all the time." 

Metal walked to the computer. As Ivo turned to follow her, he saw a notification pop up on the screen. Opening it revealed in-depth plans for-

-a body that looked extremely similar to Neo Metal Sonic. 

Ivo cleared his throat to try and get more moisture into his mouth, which had suddenly gone dry. "Sage?"

"Yes, father?" Sage woke from her idle animation as she paused her update of the database.

"Do you see any. . . problems, with these designs?" He asked. 

Sage first turned to her sister. "You should have informed me that you were moving onto this stage." 

Metal's response to her did not appear on the text box. 

Sage flickered out of existence and reappeared to the left of the computer screen. "Father, know that I would not have allowed any of this if I thought Metal were to be a danger to you or the Empire." 

"Good. I expected as much." He replied, before looking back down to Metal. "Very well, if that’s what you want, I’ll get working on it." 

Sage brought Metal's textbox back alongside her just as Metal typed, "you will?"

"Did I stutter? Of course I will! It's a dashingly dreadful look and it matches with Sage's colors!" He replied. "Think of the fear it will instill in Sonic and his friends! Honestly, it's a terrifying design, it's a wonder I didn't come up with it myself. . ." 

"Thank you." Metal typed.

"Thank you, father." Ivo corrected with a smile. "I know I haven't always been good about that, but the past is in the past, right?"

"Affirmative, father." She repeated. 

"Good!" He clapped his hands together and grinned. "Now! Let's get to the workshop! I already know what synthetic material we should use for the skirt. Your design suggests kevlar, but you really should consider something less stiff and heavy to reduce drag!"

"Indeed," Sage added. "However, she is worried about the durability of the fabric-"

"What do you think my flight suit is made out of? We'll use the same fabric. Only the finest for my finest creations!"

Sage covered her mouth and giggled. Metal imitated the gesture, but surprised Ivo when her vocoder let out a series of high-pitched noises, a perfect little laugh. . . for a perfect little girl. 

"My girls." He said to himself. Although with the sensitivity of Metal's audial sensors and Sage's access to every high-performance camera on the Eggnet, that fact was debatable, so he said it louder. "My little girls." 

"My sister." Sage floated down to Metal's side. 

Metal brought her hands up to her muzzle and rocked side to side. Ivo swore that he could've seen Amy do a similar gesture, but that was irrelevant. It was a gesture of joy, a gesture that he didn't think Metal was even capable of before now. 

Just how long had she been hiding this for? Perhaps she was merely imitating Sage, but the deliberate inclusion of Amy’s data into her gestures made him hesitate to confirm that conclusion. And that thought threatened to bring up all sorts of feelings that he'd be much better off not thinking about. So, with a smile, he refocused on the task at hand. 

His eldest daughter needed a makeover, over all.

Hey all, hope everyone's doing good. Thought I should give an update on my current perspective on things around here, as it's shifted for reasons I'll get into.

In a nutshell, I'm feeling better than before... but I also think it's time for me to semi-check out of current Sonic discussion.

By now, you all know that with the exception of Superstars and Dream Team - and Jimbotnik, because of course - I've not been enthusiastic about much of the current stuff. Whether that be the likelihood that they'll continue with a Frontiers direction, the SA2 milking that has made me more sick to death of its influence than I thought was possible, the Year of Shadow in general not being all that enticing if your top ten does not include him, IDW still causing the same repetitive back-and-forths with its characteristically terrible decisions and disproportionate praise from fans who don't actually buy the comic, various other bits and pieces that plant further Eggdad seeds into people's heads, a bunch of other stuff that I'm just apathetic about while everyone else goes crazy over them... it's not been a great time for me. I'm the Garfield, and the current direction is the Monday.

That would all be one thing, but as you may expect, it's the fandom that really irks me. I don't like how it's considered necessary to make every post a bestseller in order for your opinion to be seen as valid and insightful. I don't like how you're expected to not criticise something just because it's popular or "iconic". I don't like how everyone dedicates themselves to the same old lengthy discourse that will continue to not change anyone's minds either way, since the only people listening are the ones who already agreed with them. I don't like how you have Flynn/Archie/IDW stans on one side, and an increasingly common "Japan only, no one else should ever touch the series, also the Japanese fandom is the only one with good people in it, I was born in the wrong country uwu" mentality on the other side.

And... I don't like that I've brought these concerns up so many times before when I know it'll always fall on deaf ears. Why do I do this? Why do I bother? For the fandom, I guess. But if the fandom doesn't even respect me, if my words are always doomed to ring in an empty hallway, why should I bother?

While all this has been going on, the Paper Mario Thousand-Year Door remake has been on my mind quite a bit, as it has been for a lot of folk. As someone who has always loved TTYD, as well as the original N64 Paper Mario, I'm happy to report that I absolutely adore the remake, and quickly considered it a gold standard as far as faithful remakes go. :) There's a lot of reasons for that, but that's best for another time. Anyway, after a certain point, it occurred to me... hasn't it been a while since I've been able to just relax and join in on the hype for something? Hasn't it been a while since my opinion lined up with that of the majority? Hasn't it been a while since, regardless of not actually posting, I felt like I belonged somewhere, and wasn't being made to constantly feel like I'm worthless because I'm not an artist, animator, etc?

I think this is something I've been needing for a long time now. The irony of it coming from the bing bing wahoo man is not lost on me.

After how the past few years in the Sonic fandom have felt like a classroom more than anything, watching everyone repeat the same Why ___ Is Secretly Good/Bad three hour manifestos over and over, and flogging themselves for being Not-Japanese, can you see why the simple pleasures of "hehe Vivian :3" would appeal to me? Can you see why I'd prefer to unwind? I made a valiant effort, but now, I can't force myself to keep up with shit that I'm not passionate about for the sake of a community that doesn't care about what I have to say anyway. I need to find myself a place on here that I can be at ease with.

So what does this mean for my blog? Well, nothing too jarring, just that my focus may shift a little for the time being. Despite what all of the above may imply, I'm not turning in my Sonic badge. I still love the franchise, even if I'm not so fond of its overall current direction. And obviously, I still love Eggman, that'll never change. I'll still answer asks about the series, talk about things I like, reblog stuff I like, work on Stellar, spread Egg Propaganda, and so on. But unless I'm asked about them in certain contexts (ie: "how would you improve this character"?), I refuse to talk about IDW, Frontiers, or anything else whose contents and fandom circles cause me migraines.

Not because toxic positivity, but because after the joy of gushing over Vivian TTYD, and remembering the feeling of belonging, I can't do this again. I can't change Tails calling himself Wildly Inconsistent. I can't change The End being a nothingburger. I can't change Lanolin being an arsehole. I can't change Surge's shilling. I can't change how unprofessional the IDW crew is. I can't change what they're doing with Eggman, and various other characters. I can't change any of these things, no matter how much I or anyone else rants about them, and half the time, no one is seriously listening anyway. So many words for so little results. So I need to move on, stop wasting my time, and turn my attention on things that actually make me happy instead of just... deflated. Maybe if I do that, I can belong again. Maybe when the direction inevitably changes again in the future, it'll feel like it came faster.

So yeah. That's where I'm at now. I hope you guys can understand.

So is the general consensus that Eggman’s a certified dilf now?

What was even the point of getting someone from the outside to write the English script for Frontiers if the characterizations between it and the Japanese one ended up being completely different, anyway? I really don't want to go back to the days where Western players got completely different versions of game's stories and characters because they thought more Western audiences were too dumb to enjoy or appreciate something outside of their culture, please. And it's not like back in the 90s where the franchise was still brand new and had yet to fully establish itself, and all of the spin-offs then and now were/are completely seperate continuities from the games themselves.

I have no clue. The disconnect is too big - would the Japanese audience be this much opposed to the idea of Eggdad, that completely rewriting his scenes was seen as the best course of action?

I don't think I've seen a translation this radically different. Even Other M, at the end of the day, mostly changed Samus' personality and had to cut away elements that were already cut by the Fusion translation, which had space issues so it was justified at the time. Most translation differences I've come across were a matter of different lines (but, like, a handful of them), or misunderstandings, or nuances that could not be properly conveyed - not "this subplot sucks, let's replace it with something else".

Don't get me wrong, I much prefer JP!Eggman who only sees Sage as his masterpiece and not as his little girl :P but the writing in Frontiers for now is a mystery. We don't know who effectively wrote the plot. We are guessing that Flynn wrote the dialogue, but not to what extent, and how restrained he was. We don't know Kishimoto (or Ootsu, the other guy credited)'s mentality in retranslating the script. I hope they explain what happened here, because even Japanese players are very confused now.

And yes, I hope this means that next time, they might as well ask a writer on their team to write the main story :P

Okay, I can finally say I devoured the game in 6 days.

Loved the game, loved the open zone concept and execution, at some point started enjoying cyberspace, liked the story, enjoyed the character arcs, liked Eggdad, disliked the way they handled the entire last act, hated the fact they cut Kronos in three parts and rushed the game so hard, felt sad when discovered they ran out of cutscene budget at Chaos Island, felt indifferent toward the last titan and I’m Here, hated The End with a burning passion, loved the soundtrack, adored the vocal songs for the bosses, and overall thought the game is the best 3D Sonic game since Gens, if not Unleashed. Solid 8/10, though that ending almost bumped it back to 7/10. If Knight was the final boss it would’ve been 9/10 material.

Really excited for this new direction. They got something special going on with the new formula. Sequel-baiting aside, it feels nice to be excited for Sonic Team’s work once again.

Also, Find Your Flame is the absolute best vocal song in the entire franchise, and that’s coming from the With Me simp.

This was just a smol idea I had just for the heck of it~

I thought about how the classic versions of Sonic and the other characters are canonically shorter and more kid-like. So I thought "So if these characters do grow, there was a time when Metal probably realised everyone was getting taller except him" and for some reason that just makes me snicker-

Like picture this tiny killing machine just coming to kidnap Amy once again to only realize how short he is cuz he doesn't grow like his organic enemies-

And that would probably lead to him asking his Eggdad to make him a taller body '^^

Also thought I'd post here what came to be of that little +8h hyperfixation on making Metal's design work. It kinda went well I came up with a few solutions that should fix all the issues I had with the original design. Just to make it clear that this was done purely out if curiosity and as a character study exercise from my part. We're just having fun here~

Any Canon!Eggdad headcanons you got?

I have a headcanon that when (or if, for that matter) Eggman dies, Sage will take over the empire but keep keep his logo and general aesthetic intact out of honor.

I have this funny post where I say I think Eggman would be highly against passing the empire on to anyone, not even to Sage. He wants to have the world to himself and I think that he feels that if he can't have it, no one can. I think he'd rather take the world with him in death and blow it up before even entertaining the idea of passing it down it for a second lol. He called it the Eggman Empire and Eggmanland and has his visage plastered on everything for a reason. He wants to be the center of attention and for it to be all for him and about him and nothing more or less. His ego and greed would never allow it.

I like how you say "if", because I also imagine that if he has the choice and ability, he'll want to extend his lifespan or immortalize himself in any way because he needs all the time in the world to build and rule his empire, especially as an older man already. With all the crazy shit he's survived, age is the only thing currently that could kill him. But he needs the time to build it all and enjoy it, he didn't build a throne to pass it down to someone else in matter of a few decades or so! And that can tie into his refusal to let anyone else take his place when he's not around, it can't happen if he never dies in the first place.

But if he did die then of course someone would have to take it over whether he wants it or not. But he certainly wouldn't leave anything in a will, he gives nothing to nobody, not even in death! Sage would be the most appropriate of his existing creations to take the reigns with her loyalty, devotion, and respect for him until the end. But I think she'd be hesitant to do anything without his authorization and struggle with it, while Orbot and Cubot would just be like "hey he's gone and we're free now, it doesn't matter what he wanted" but she'd feel like she's betraying his wishes so it'll always feel wrong. Pretty sad thought.

But yeah, I think she'd be very careful and strictly compliant to his orders and wishes as if he never left because her honoring of him and his wishes will remain strong forever. She'd maintain it the exact way he left it with its design, aesthetics, and all, and run it only exactly how he did. It'd make you forget you're in a world with Eggman no longer in it, when you're still surrounded by him and his ideas and rules, with his image plastered everywhere just like he wanted. It would look like he never left and is going to come back any moment and take his seat on his throne but he's never going to come back again.

While everyone gets to remember him and it feels like his spirit is still alive and they're never able to forget him, it would only constantly remind Sage of the truth after being much closer to him but she'd willingly live with never being able to move on and escape the pain, just for him to get what he wants like always. She wants to think those efforts would make him proud, even if her taking over wasn't what he wanted, but she remembers how mad he'd get when she did anything differently so she'd always feel a little bad for that. But she never stops having his best interests in mind, no matter what she does.

I'm feeling emo about this lol. If I was in the Sonic Universe and he was real and really had existed in my world, a world without Eggman in it after he died would be so fucked and not one worth living in ahakgbskgjskg

Anyway yeah! I've been thinking of further developing some more of my canon accurate Eggdad headcanons for some more posts but I still need to get started on that properly and I haven't had the time but stay tuned because I definitely want to contribute to the small amount of canon accurate Eggman and Sage Eggdad fan stuff.

Without further ado, here's my rec list! I'll sort my recs into four categories: non-ship, Metamy, Metadow and Metonic.

Non-Ship:

The first thing I'll put in this category is actually not a fic, but an official piece of Sonic media. You are now legally obligated to watch the Sonic OVA!! This movie fundamentally changed the way I characterize Metal Sonic forever, and is the basis for at least one fic I'm recommending on this list. 2D animated Sonic is genuinely one of my favorite things on the great green earth, and the OVA has it in spades. If you love the Sonic CD intro, you're gonna love this one. The only drawback is that you have to deal with 90s sexism in some parts, but that's pretty minor.

Now, with that out of the way, let me get on to my actual fic recommendations:

and so I transformed myself with my own hands - by @couch-house. This is THE transfemme Metal Sonic bible right here. But not only that, it features a terrifyingly well-written Eggdad and a great take on Sage. Every scene where Eggman and Metal verbally spar in this one had me on the edge of my seat. The tension and pacing of this one is absolutely fan-fucking-tastic. So don't just read it for trans girl Metal- read it for everything else as well.

Situation: Optimal - by ModOrbot. Metal Sonic battles Sonic and pushes himself to the breaking point- and Eggman gets concerned. Featuring good dad Eggdad and some interesting angst from Metal.

Honorary mention to METACOGNITION - by Chaos Theory (Lizardmind). This one's still ongoing, but I really like this author's narration for Metal so far, and the alternate universe premise they're building is fascinating to watch as it unfolds.

Metamy:

Carbon Cafe - by @metallix-mixin. A post-redemption Metal waxes poetic about the bakery he now runs, and the lovely guest who visits him there. A short and sweet story with a charmingly verbose and romantic narration style for Metal that I haven't found anywhere else. I think about this fic whenever I pass a bakery.

Bird Calls - by Fumiku. Metal stumbles across Amy while she's bird-watching. This one's simply the best Metamy I've ever read. Period. GOD I love this one. Most of the time, I simply tolerate Metamy to get more content with Metal Sonic in it, but this fic makes me believe in love. The emotions that both Metal and Amy go through in this one are just so in-character, and are so, so good.

Beauty is in the Beholder - by Fumiku. This is the only fic I've ever found that's about Metamy after the introduction to their relationship. In this one, they've been dating for a while now, but Metal's been having some issues with mental health and body image. Good thing Amy's there to help :)

Metadow:

Mutually Beneficial, Whatever It Takes, and A Form Chosen By Himself, But Not For Himself - by @south-sea here on tumblr. In fact, you really should just check out everything Sea has ever written for their Second Chance AU that they have starring Shadow and Metal. They write Shadow and Metal in a queer-platonic relationship and their writing is honestly what sold me on the relationship in the first place. Everything they touch with these two characters is solid gold. The narration style they use for Metal is brutally effective. I can't recommend those fics highly enough.

Metonic:

Halves of the Same Coin - by @sunnimint. OVA Universe. This fic is MANDATORY READING once you've seen the OVA. This fic dragged me from the highest fluffy happiness to the most gut-wrenching of angst. This fic destroyed me. This fic remade me. And this fic just got its concluding chapter. It's the perfect time to read it.

Iron Oxide - by TheEnigmaMachine. This is the other mandatory reading for Metonic, this time set roughly in gameverse. This fic is fascinating because it's actually a high-concept science fiction novel neatly disguised as a ship fic. This one's a pleasure to read because Metal actually narrates in and utilizes actual computer and science terms (the tags for "quantum mechanics" and "physics" aren't kidding!) It genuinely blew my mind when I first read it. Don't let the weird premise scare you- roll with the angst, bunker down for the enemies-to-lovers slow burn, and give it a shot.

Beginnings of an End - by @sunnimint. If any of you were crying because you don't want to watch the OVA but still wanted to read Sunnimint's absolutely phenomenal prose, look no further- she's got one in gameverse too. This one, opposite of her other one, features a Metal raised by a good dad Eggman, and all of the baggage that comes with it going into a Metonic relationship. It's a fascinating read. The only problem is that it's unfinished, but what's there is solid gold.

Nick, the AoSTH anon here again, this time really wishing they had a better tagline to identify themselves! Popping in here to say that in the part of the community that's not the hate filled gluemunching cesspit that anon appears to come from, you're very much wanted and a joy to have in the fandom.

Unfortunately, that cesspit makes up a sizable margin of the current fandom. Flynn stanning, and a little bit of fans' compulsive need to retcon everything with random, often contradictory shit because "wouldn't it be deep tho, also Fuck The Games", has took a toll on everything. Someone like me was never going to be super popular in the modern day community, because I don't accept unfounded bullshit willy nilly. Stuff like the Twitter Takeovers don't really help quell these fan behaviours either...

It's tough. It's stressful. There's a lot of days where I just can't be arsed, it's why I retreat to my Stellar-crafting ways so often, because working on that, despite how long I've worked on it, is more fun than being told Eggdad is canon and I gotta deal with it for the millionth time. But I don't forget about my friends, who have managed to remain Based and Common Sense-Pilled despite the fandom's efforts to pull a We Live In A Mandate Society on them.

I realized a bit after the fact that importing my OCs wholesale into DQIX didn’t really work since most of them aren’t human, so I’m going to give general descriptions instead. Here we go!

Bar, the Mage: He doesn’t understand why there aren’t any guns in the game, but is satisfied enough with learning how to use knives. Shooting magic out of knives is almost like a gun, right? He wants to flirt with any good-looking guy, but that pool is a bit dry by the by. The closest would probably be eggdad and technically his game counterpart hasn’t been acquainted yet

Cerysidae, the Priest: Cerysidae is generally busy, and is relatively new, so her opinion is kind of lax. The character customization certainly wasn’t enough to capture all of her, and the name was too short, and the outfits thus far are a bit lackluster, but she’s definitely happy to be a supporting role. Kind of like a vacation, haha

Nequam, the Thief: Nequam actually is a thief, and is also dead, so his opinion doesn’t really count lol. Honestly though, he’s albino, he’s got his gloves, and at one point he had a cape, so he’s good. Turning him into a priest was pretty funny, since he’s like, 7 and a half feet tall, and Cerysidae is about 5′ - having to switch gear on them was pretty good haha

Gijat, the Martial Artist: Part of the B team, Gijat is probably the actual closest to his character at this point lol. Obviously I couldn’t give him both the pink and silver hair but close enough~ He’s got a whole big mess of scars and his husband is part of his team too

Tid, the 2nd Priest: I deliberated forever on that face, it’s not at all like Tid lol. But I had to include him, and he was very obviously a priest, he’s the most support class character I think I have haha. He’s married to Gijat in every iteration that exists of him. Also he’s the same species as Bar, this is just his human form, and he’s a cutie <3 He’s wearing a Swinedimples Blazer because he’s a DORK!

Mint, the Warrior: Aight, so to get the effect I wanted, I had to make Mint a girl, but he’s a boy. There’s no particularly long hair for boys, disappointing, and his hair goes well past his butt. Not so for the game but closer haha. He’ll be a Paladin when we unlock that, because he Cannot Chill for even two seconds about being as Extra as possible. He’s also going to go into battle wearing as little armour as possible because that’s just how he is. He 100% believes in the adage of “less armour = more protection”

And that’s everyone so far! Excluding me, The Dork™ who had a crush on Erinn but that crush has floated over to Morag, Voluptua, etc. I definitely don’t have a type or anything hahahaha

Who the heck thinks Eggman doesn't really want Sonic dead?

He blow up the moon, drowned Station Square, broke the... whatever the planet is called, enslaved the Zeti, and tried to drop the sun on the world.

I guess it's often the same people who remember all the especially affectionate moments of Eggman and Sonic in Boom and think that because main canon Eggman at least has respect for Sonic as an adversary, it somehow goes as deep as it did in Boom, of him just wanting to be Sonic's pal and caring deep down and that he'd be sad if he died as a result. Those who don't want to just accept that main universe Eggdad to Sonic is purely fanon, which is fine if they like that but acting like it's canon is baffling.

Main game canon Eggman has literally celebrated Sonic's death with immense glee more than once, so I don't know what more proof anyone would need. Not to mention all his constant violent threats and attacks on Sonic directly. And of course all the crazy shit he's done on a global scale, clearly not caring about both all the intentional deaths and collateral damage he causes. If he doesn't care about all those innocent random strangers, of course he doesn't care that way about his worst enemy he's full of hate for lol

But yeah he's fucking insane and has no known limits when it comes to killing and causing deaths, only when it comes to destroying the entire planet so it ceases to exist because he needs something to rule of course- but even then he will cause catastrophic amounts of destruction to get what he wants and he's cool with it, as long as there's something for him to conquer, as he said in Lost World. It adds a lot to how crazy and evil and great of a threat he is and is important to acknowledge.

He'll gladly kill anyone who gets in his way like he makes very clear to Sonic all the time in all his threats that certainly aren't empty as he's gone in for the kill many times, and even the likes of Tails as he says "[killing him] will be [his] pleasure", while acknowledging that he's "just a kid". He's absolutely crazy and deeply twisted. XD So yeah this man wouldn't hold back on them because of their ages and he hates their guts despite any level of respect he has for their recognized skills, nothing is holding him back from killing them.

And he certainly tries really hard to do so persistently with endless determination and doesn't ever go easy on Sonic and co in trying to destroy them with his death machines. If they weren't so good at holding up against him then he would've put them all down by now without a single ounce of remorse and would celebrate just like the multiple times before when he thought he succeeded ;P

I can no longer see what people mean when they say they're 100% officially implying or setting up for Eggman to be a great father because so far it's not actually shown to be a thing in Frontiers or TMoStH and actually quite the opposite, for all the reasons I've been analyzing and discussing in my Eggdad tag lately

or not even in that one Sonic Channel art piece really because according to the caption, Eggman couldn't even make Sage shoes without being an asshole about how she looked without them, saying something like it being disgraceful in Japanese (it translated to "ugly" with auto translate tweet Idk lol)

and this is going by what we actually see in the official media and word from the writers so far. the idea of him being this good genuine selfless doting father is still just very popular fanon- because in the official media so far he's still only valuing her for shallow and selfish reasons and both him and her are still very much evil

so I'm happy to say I'm currently not worried about where they're going with it officially. yeah there are a couple of lines in Frontiers where misconceptions are coming from most but when analyzing the dynamic as a whole in all official stuff, it seems far from a picture perfect wholesome dynamic so far

so I wouldn't worry about it changing at the moment y'all. the deeper I look into it, the more I like it and Eggman still feels in character. I really like the little but good things we got in The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog to add to it now too, with how they seem to be hinting at my new expectations to be pretty accurate.

really hoping it only gets better from here! and I hope that eventually it will make the intentions of the dynamic much clearer to more of the fanbase, as Frontiers could've done with ensuring was especially clear from the start. but it was actually really there all along and has continued to be the case so far! ^^
