I'm so sorry, OP. 😔
He stopped, a bit breathless, to take a swig of water. The hike had been incredible. He didn't mind that it had been more difficult than he expected. He checked the compass. He was only a little off, likely bc there had been so many obstacles to work around.
He turned a little to the left. There. True north, toward the car. Tucking the water bottle back in its place, he started down a slight grade.
The underbrush started to thin out as he walked. It was a welcome change. He knew that fallen wood and brush were a sign of a healthy forest. As a wildlife photographer, he sought the terrain out, knowing it increased his chances to see a variety of species. But that didn't mean he was happy to trip and slam into a lichen-robed sycamore about a mile back.
The trees spread out a little, until they were just beyond his reach. He didn't mind. With the ground so clear, he didn't need any help balancing. Instead, he tucked his thumbs under the straps of his pack and let his mind wander a bit.
By the time he realized that the woods had gone quiet, the sky was starting to turn gold. He could see it thru the leaves of the canopy. He shouldn't have been able to do that. Not in this old growth.
"Must've been a fire," he said aloud. But he wasn't sure that a fire would explain what he was seeing.
The canopy was exactly 10 feet overhead. There were no shorter trees, no taller ones to be seen through the thin cover. It was a single shade of green. His eyes wandered from maple to maple. They were all maple, growing in neat rows. It gave the impression of a tessellated environment in a video game.
The uncanny feeling only increased as he continued to walk. He should've made it back to the road already. The compass still showed north. Not that he thought he'd strayed. The grid of trees kept him on a straight path.
Sighing, he removed his pack and dug for the gps. The screen was black. Of course it was. But, this is what compasses are for. He often told interns to carry one, saying, "it doesn't give as much detail as a gps, but you'll never forget to charge it."
He checked the needle, just in case, and kept moving north. The sky slowly changed to pinks and purples, steadily darkening. He kept telling himself that the road would come into sight soon. He'd just underestimated how deep he'd gone before turning around.
"Just another 5 minutes," multiplied until the forest was too dark to walk without a flashlight. The familiar sounds of crickets and owls were conspicuously absent. His heart rate had slowly been rising. It reached a fever pitch and felt as if it might give out.
It skipped a beat when he noticed the sound. It reminded him stepping on a rotten log and breaking thru. The odd splintering crunch came from the left. He spun around to face it. There was nothing but a line of trees. Maybe it was something in the distance, and only seemed close.
A bit flustered, he grabbed his compass and checked it. East. He must've made more than a left turn. He didn't remember, but stress can do that. He took a deep breath and turned left.
East.
Must've misread it, he thought, turning left once more.
East.
He turned again.
East.
Forcing himself to breathe slowly, he went to the closest tree. Moss wasn't foolproof, but it was all he could think of. There wasn't any. He rubbed the bark with his hands, searching. The next tree, and the next, were equally barren.
"Ok," he whispered, sliding to his knees. "Ok. Ok. What do you do? You... stay put. You stay put and wait for help. Yeah."
He turned and put his back against the tree. After taking a long look around, just in case, he turned the flashlight off. It was a small light with limited battery, and he didn't want to be without it later.
The branches that had done little to block the sun somehow obliterated the moonlight. He might as well have closed his eyes. He blinked a few times and, as his vision adjusted, the faint shapes of the trees appeared. They seemed wrong, even for that bizarre landscape. It was almost as if the spaces between them were no longer even.
The sound returned, making him jump and fumble for the flashlight. It seemed to ring all around him. Once again, he saw nothing but the copy-paste maples stretching out in all directions.
One direction, he thought sarcastically. East.
Relieved to finally see something that made sense, he sighed and lowered his shoulders. He closed his eyes. The limbs above him seemed to dip low, and the creaking was almost comforting. All he had to do was relax until dawn brought the search party that would surely come.
Above his head, leaves rustled. That strange noise repeated, over and over, like a pulse. He couldn't see anything up there, just moving branches in a wind he couldn't feel. A bit of bark flaked off and fell on him. That must've been the source of the sound.
---
The sun was well above the horizon when the girls saw the tree. It had a wide, dark streak on one side that stood out.
"Sap, maybe?" one asked, leaning in to examine the gummy stain. "What do you think, Alex?
"Must have some damage up there." Alex pointed toward the top of the stain, near the canopy. "Pass me a water?"
"Sure."
"You dropped something."
They relaxed for a few minutes, even breaking out some almonds. They'd been walking a while and it was nice to rest and stretch.
Alex searched around her feet. There was something in the sparse grass, but it wasn't hers.
"I think it's a compass!" she laughed. "Talk about good timing. The one time I forget mine at home."
"Yes!! So, what direction are we headed?"
Alex wiped a drip of sap from the glass with her sleeve.
"East."
monoculture forests are deeply unsettling in a way that is hard to explain to people who do not spend a lot of time looking at forests

dp x dc prompt or smth
Danny was lost. Yes, lost.
“Hey, can you point me in the direction of the bathroom?” He asked a random dude.
“HOW DID YOU GET IN THE BATCAVE?!”
“Jeez no need to yell, I just want to find the bathroom man.”
Danny was lost again, damn he has bad luck.
“Hey man, do you know how to get to Crime Alley (or really any other street)?”
“HOW DID YOU GET HERE?! WE’RE 3,000 METERS UNDER THE OCEAN?!”
“My phone won’t work :(“ He says as he looks at his phone, which was not working.

I know the unicursal (i.e., non-branching) labyrinth is a visual art thing and doesn't at all match the description of the mythological Labyrinth, but sometimes I picture some sort of ancient Greek SCP thing with very speedy stonemasons constantly lengthening the path in order to contain a very, very slow Minotaur.

This looks perfect for playing Super Mario Dead '96...or Godzilla vs. Kong, if you catch my drift...
(wish I had a link to that Tumblr story)
my roommate bought a VR headset at a flea market. it’s got no company name on it, except for a stylized logo no one can figure out. She tried to get it working but couldn’t, so I’m taking a look. It’s got warnings about lasers on it and it says “for testing and development only, not for resale”. It’s got weird padded sections that go over your head, not just over your eyes.
I think I’ve read this mind control story. I’m about to get hypnotized into being a mindless drone, aren’t I?

Thanksgiving is coming up, and I decided to make a drawing! I'm so tired right now.
For any robot/computer characters I have missed; make an assumption of what they're doing!!
