oh this is canon to me. i see them as korean on orion’s side (last name: 현) 🤲 and tbh i think this headcanon is popular but wildly underexplored in the fandom space!

like. the idea of a very wealthy/ancient magical korean family raises interesting questions because korea was a colonized entity not very long ago… there are the atrocities of japanese occupation (!!) and the korean war all within living memory. i recommend looking into the miracle on the han river . i see the black family as such an interesting way to explore that sudden leap from poverty -> prosperity.

in my hc, the black family has always been one of the few lucky aristocratic families in korea. their wealth is ancient, it’s a cushion. but even that doesn’t manage to shield them from the horrors of colonization, they are still reduced and still treated as second-class citizens despite the physical protection their money and status affords. i could see why after this (and after emigrating to england) the blacks are so proud of their heritage, what they’ve survived and accomplished. it’s a double edged sword— we know how awful the blacks can be, in service of preserving tradition.

idk! i think this headcanon gives an explanation for why they’re Like That and adds little more complexity. for a family trying to hold onto a culture that’s being actively suppressed & erased, “forever pure” starts sounding like a more explicable motto.
