chapter 2 - Stef is repainting the Heron together with Ingvar, Jes and Ed, while Hal is helping Stig with training for the Maktig contest

Stig hurried forward to take up his duties as first mate. He nodded his thanks to Thorn.

“Everything ready?” he asked. The old sea wolf pointed fore and aft.

“Bow and stern lines are ready to cast off. Oars are unstowed.” Stig glanced quickly at the telltale.

“He won’t use oars,” he said. “Not with this wind.”

this makes me smile so hard

chapter 10 - Stef takes his part in sailing the ship out of the harbor and then takes up his customary position as bow lookout

The sail filled and the ship leapt forward once more, speeding back

behind the stern of the guard boat, leaving it no time or room to reverse course. The helmsman tried, but the result was a dismal failure and the boat wallowed in confusion, losing forward way as Heron shot past her. In the bow, Jesper and Stefan laughed aloud and shouted insults at the rowing boat’s crew.

“Quiet,” ordered Hal, and they fell silent immediately.

chapter 13

“We’ll head for the boom ship,” Hal said, pointing toward it. “Ulf, Wulf, Stefan and Jesper, oars, please.”

The four designated crewmen clambered into the rowing wells and ran out their oars.

chapter 19 - Stef and Jes help the twins with the sail

Two fishing boats rode in their moorings on either side of the little ship. Jesper sniffed, wrinkling his nose, as he tossed the wicker fenders over the side to protect the hull.

“Ugh. Old fish guts,” he said. “Wish they’d sluice those ships down from time to time.”

Stefan grinned at him. “They’d only be covered in more fish guts and scales within a day or two,” he pointed out.

Jesper grimaced. “Still, it’d be nice to have a day or two without that stink.”

chapter 23 - Stef, Jes and Ingvar send the starboard yardarm aloft

chapter 24 - Stef and Ingvar level the ship on the sand

chapter 25 - Ingvar goes third-wheeling Jes and Stef for dinner because Hal thinks they would not get a table for nine people (the other group is Hal, Thorn, Stig, Olaf and Lydia, Edvin stays with the twins on the ship)

His [Edvin's] last stop had been the fish market, and now he was baking a large snapper in the coals of a fire on the beach. The fisherman had readily agreed to join them when invited. Edvin had rubbed the fish with olive oil and salt, and stuffed olives and slices of lemon into the cavity. The smell of the fish cooking was mouthwatering. As they left, Thorn looked regretfully at the fire in the sand.

“Maybe we should eat here,” he said.

Edvin glanced up at him. “I bought a fish, not a sea monster,” he said. “I’ve seen how much you can eat.”

chapter 27 - Stef doubting Hal's plan (kindly and with respect, thank you very much, he has manners... sometimes)

All hands faced aft, waiting and watching for Vulture to emerge. Then the black shape slid out of the murk, and Jesper, Stefan and Edvin raised an ironic cheer. This time, Myrgos had been too clever.

The crew of the Heron stirred uncomfortably as he [Olaf] went down on one knee. Skandians didn’t do that sort of thing.

“Should we kneel down if she [Empress Regent Justinia] calls on us?” Stefan asked in a low voice.

Hal turned to look at him. “We don’t do it for Erak. We won’t do it for her. We’ll bow, that’s all.”

Thorn grinned. “That should make things interesting.”
