Dragon Age Fic Recs

In honor of the Just Leave a Comment Fest, and with no particular theme, here are a few of my favorite Dragon Age Fics:

Origins: 

be my mirror by ella_vellan: (T; 5,798) Alistair & Morrigan. Alistair meets Kieran for the first time in Orlais. The dialogue in this feels so well-paced and authentic, and it really navigates a fraught situation with grace. One of those fics that feels bittersweet in the most cathartic way. 

a gentle, beating heart by rynleaf: (M; 5,115 Words) Warden/Zevran. The Warden finds out she is pregnant sometime after Origins and puts off telling Zevran. The epistolary pieces of this frame the underlying story so well, and the flow of the fic itself is extremely well-paced.

A Man’s Word is His Bond by howlsmovinglibrary: (M; 35,135 Words/9 chapters) Zevran/Warden Soulmate AU. Honestly? This Surana cracks me up and I adore this fic. She is just having absolutely none of his nonsense. No thank you. Also, the implications of a soulmate-identifying mark are really well-explored here.

Dragon Age II:

see me bare my teeth for you by calypsid: (T; 2,978 Words) Fenris/Hawke vampire AU. This one has really good pacing and Fenris’s POV is really effective. Would absolutely read way more about the dynamic between this Hawke and Fenris. 

to hold you by the edges by vesperics: (T; 4,059 Words) Fenris/Hawke wound-tending set sometime in Act 1. I am a sucker for wound-tending anything, but I really enjoyed the way this fic explores Hawke and Fenris’s early dynamic and the way she navigates his boundaries about magical healing. 

River Stone by loquaciousquark: (M; 45,633 Words) Fenris/Hawke. Hawke is captured and subjected to a botched Rite of Tranquility. Hawke survives by pretending it worked while Fenris tries to find her. The pain in this fic is so delicately and thoughtfully depicted; it might be my favorite hurt/comfort fic ever. There is an art to writing something that hurts like this while still making the catharsis of resolution feel earned, and this author absolutely knows how to do it right. 

Inquisition: 

Portrait of a Man by Dulcidyne: (T; 3,136 Words) Cullen/Inquisitor. Cullen sits for a portrait. Love the dynamic of person vs. role here, and the idea of how someone is depicted potentially outliving who they actually are. A fic I would hug if I could. 

Truth-Telling by todisturbtheuniverse: (M; 3,988 Words; CW: Fantasy Racism) Adaar/Josephine. Adaar tells several stories about how she lost her horn, but saves the truth for Josie. There are so many great pieces in this about the faces shown to people we trust vs. people who pry for information. Love the almost-but-not-quite together state of their relationship here, too. Yearning, my beloved. 

Port in the Storm by kvella: (E; 89,445 Words/19 Chapters) After nearly hooking up, Cullen and Josephine navigate their tensions while trying to build a memorial for Haven. A lovely slow burn! Characterization is enjoyable and consistent, smut is well-written, and the tension is palpable. The sections involving Josie’s family were some of my favorites.

‘Undefeated’ by @fawxdraws  https://archiveofourown.org/works/4395161/chapters/9978923 - a sadly unfinished masterpiece of modern punk and underground fighting ring AU goodness (beautifully illustrated by the author!).

‘Champion’ by Vashoth on FF.net https://www.fanfiction.net/s/10826002/1/Champion an incredibly imaginitive fairytale AU with Hawke being queen Leandra’s daughter forced to offer her hand in marriage to the knight who wins the grand tournament held in her honor. Fenris is a runaway slave who stole a knight’s identity by chance and is taking part in the competition. This fic holds my heart forever by giving Fenris nickname “Goose” and having both Bethany and Carver in it.

‘Love is a farm in Ferelden’ - maybe the sweetest and fluffiest work of fanfiction created by the wonderful  Shinkshinkshink  and JenniferHawke on FF.net (sadly unfinished). https://www.fanfiction.net/s/9161497/1/Love-is-a-Farm-in-Ferelden  An AU set 3 years before the blight chases the Hawke family away from Lothering, with Fenris finding his way to this small town in search of refuge. Hawke family present in full, with the best Malcolm Hawke i’ve seen in fanfiction ever!

I hope I will be able to add more wonderful gems of writing to this list as time goes on!

 These stories had touched my heart, helped me to pull through my depression, cured my soul, made me laugh, cry, provide endless inspiration for artwork and solidify FenHawke as my ultimate OTP until I die!

Fanfiction Writers Appreciation Day: Dragon Age Edition

So yesterday was Fanfiction Writers Appreciation Day, a day where we as consumers of fan-made content show our appreciation for those that take the time to write stories that extend universes, fill in gaps, and leave us wanting more. And since I am always a slut for good fanfics and making lists, I have put together a collection of my all-time favorite works of fanfiction. I decided to split up the fandoms, because having them all together in one post made Tumblr mad. I also tried to get them all done by the 21st, but the universe conspired against me. So I’ll be posting different lists for different fandoms throughout the week.

Ah, Dragon Age.... Will I ever be able to climb out of the dumpster that is your fandom? Probably not. Quick disclaimer: most of the descriptions for these fics come from an older post of mine on my old blog. I’m just too damn lazy to rewrite everything from scratch.

A Child Unexpected by @skybound2

A much-needed vacation to Seheron leads to several lifestyle changes. Then Zevran shows up… quickly followed by the Grey Wardens. One of the first Dragon Age fics I can remember reading and an excellent read at that. 

Eye of the Storm by @msbarrows

A recently unpossessed Anders throws himself at the mercy of the Prince of Starkhaven in hopes of a quick death. Sebastian has other plans in mind. Sebanders (Anderastion?) is a pairing I would have never even thought of until this incredible fic.

Fen’harel Enansal by SkilledWarriorKiwi

Lavellan’s daughter often gets into trouble but her wolf protector is always there to save her. One of the first Solavellan fics I read. The ending is bittersweet and gives me all the feels. 

Gentrification, or How Not To Be A Sow's Ear by StrangeGibbon

Hawke is invited to a fancy shindig and asks Fenris to help her with the finer points of high society. Which would work out, if only they didn’t want to kill each other.

Guide Me Home by Waiting4Morning

When Justice ups and leaves Anders, it leaves the mage with no memories of the past ten years. Now out of options, Hawke must drag the amnesiac mage back to the Wardens before the Templars catch him. This fic is beautiful you guys. If you love Hawke / Anders as much as I do, then this fic is for you!

Former rock god turned sweater-vest wearing recluse Solas is drawn out of his shell by Ellana Lavellan and her band, the Inquisition. One of my favorite AUs. Like holy crapola it’s amazing.

Homecoming by @lavellanpls

Lilith honestly thought that over for a moment—maybe if she moved somewhere too far for them to travel? Kept a pet dragon? Rescheduled for after she died?—but caved in the end with a groan of defeat. “No, let them come. Better to get it over with now.”

Clan Lavellan visits Skyhold. Mayhem ensues. This fic is the greatest. Please read it guys.

Maric attempts to rectify his worst-father-of-the-year status by recognizing Alistair as his son and actually raising him. Explores Alistair’s life from an unloved bastard to a royal one. 

No Labor Like Love by @loquaciousquark

Fenris gets Hawke preggers. Hawke and Co. cope as best as they can. Fenris stresses. Hilarity ensues. 

Savior of the Dammed by @littleblue-eyedbird

Set sometime after Trespasser, a non-Inquisitor Lavellan finds a near dead Solas in the woods. Against her better judgment, she takes him back to her clan to care for him. This fic is on-going and is one of my current fave Solavellan fics.

Tell Me What the Wolf Knows by Madame_Snarf

A stifled sob escaped his lips, as he covered his eyes with his palm trying to not to weep. How could this be? What kind of cruel, sick joke was this? She unknowingly called out to him, unwittingly was drawn to him by reason of his being an outcast and then sought comfort in his image, even as a betrayer and trickster.

After the events of Inquisition, Solas finds a nice spot to take a nap. He is surprised to find that the memories the place holds contain a very familiar face. 

The Final Conversation by David Gaider

David Gaider, the former lead writer for Bioware and the writer for Dorian Pavus, recently posted this fanfic (which is pretty much canon fight me) about Dorian having a heart to heart with his estranged and recently deceased father. It’s very moving and because it’s David Freaking Gaider it’s also beautifully written.

The Haven Wildlife Rehabilitation Center by @feynites

Ehem. “The one where Lavellan runs a wildlife rehabilitation place and Solas is a secret magical shape-shifter who gets injured and brought in and falls in love with his rescuer.” 

Sera runs Solas over with her car. Twice.

Unwanted by @randomcheeses

Lavellan is a sacrifice to the Dread Wolf who in turn takes responsibility for her. Mentions of past rape just a heads up. It sounds really gloomy but it’s actually not. Just read it.

Can confirm, Instagiffer is real easy to learn and use for basic giffing. You will be tempted to increase framerates for higher quality gifs (or at least I was). Your eyes will feel something is off if the framerate is higher than 24fps.

What do you post?: Lots of assorted (lately just CR) retweets, videos and gifs I made, sometimes writing stuff or neat cats or dogs or birbs of the internet. Random life updates.

Do you get asks?: I have ACTUAL PROOF of several asks somehow disappearing on their way to my inbox, so if I ever don’t respond, just send it again and I won’t be annoyed. Yes! I am very lucky to have people sending me stuff from time to time. And, since I turned off anons, 100% fewer death threats from that one dude who’s busy getting himself into legal trouble over harassing other people. Cool.

How did you get the idea for your URL?: My initials are A.K.A., as in an alias, so I wanted to do a play on the whole “rose by any other name” thing. It’s one of those things that makes perfect sense when you’re 19 and overthinking things (and, to be fair, when you’re 29 and overthinking things).

I follow: 101 blogs, the vast majority of which are inactive, and I think the last person I followed on here was like three or four years ago? I mostly just browse blogs individually now.

Followers: I... haven’t looked at this number in a while, but it is apparently 3,116. Shit. Um. I mean. Uh. Hi. That’s terrifying. Who are you. Welcome? I hope you find things you enjoy here? I love finding out what awesome things people are up to (or what their amazing pets look like!!!) if you ever feel the urge to send me a random message?

Average hours of sleep: Over the past year or so it went from a strict seven and a half to about six. I feel a lot more well-rested on average, though, and never get sleep paralysis episodes anymore, so I’ll take the trade-off, however it came about.

Lucky number: Six! When I was a kid I won a bunch of prizes picking six during a game at a birthday party or something, so I decided that it would be my lucky number.

Instruments: Piano! Technically a bit of violin, but that’s buried somewhere in my parents’ storage room now.

What are you wearing?: I had to work from home to sign for a big package today, so I got to avoid work clothes! Navy hoodie, jeans, long socks that go from suns to partly cloudy to cloudy to rainy to thunderstorms.

Dream job: What I’m doing now with a little more job security.

Dream trip: I love @mystery-moose’s response here: visit all the internet friends! @mystery-moose, @loquaciousquark, @bettydice, @silksieve, @critrolestats pals, and many more! Visit school friends in Canada and assorted States! I’d also like to do pretty much any solo traveling abroad - I find it infinitely less stressful than traveling with a group. That said, maybe a trip somewhere nice with my parents and brother?

Favorite food: @mystery-moose mentioned chicken katsu which, YES PLEASE. I passionately adore almost all foods, but some major faves are: pierogi, gulab jamun (ANYTHING WITH ROSEWATER SYRUP), falafel, olives, gnocchi, sushi, just bring me A Food, especially if I’ve never tried it before, and I will probably enjoy it.

Significant other?: The last person I turned down on a date tracked down my phone number to call me names and send me threatening texts. We’ll give it a minute. (Loooow on the list of priorities, man.)

Last book I read: On the plane back from Austin I read Borderline by Mishell Baker. Loved it, looking forward to reading the sequel.

Top 3 fictional universes: Critical Role, Mass Effect, Star Trek. They’re not necessarily places I’d like to exist, but they are awfully fun sandboxes to play in and each means a lot to me for different reasons.

Preferred name: NEMO! Preferred pronouns: she/her. Favorite color: honestly? Brown ( i like anything close to brown too. so bronze and taupe ahhhh, green, orange. I can’t choose.) Any pets?: I HAVE three kitties ( nala, bagheera, and mavis ), and two dogs ( lilo and duke ).  How much RP experience do you have?: I’ve been rping since I was like.... 12 and I’m 24 now, so long enough.  Have/do you RP in other fandoms?: Greek Gods, Disney, Superatural, Harry Potter, OUAT? WARRIOR CATS GOOOOOOO!!! Man, Warrior cats used to be my JAM. Still would be my jam if it were still popular and it wouldn’t be weird for a 24 yr old to love a kiddy book. Lmao. This question has made me realize that I have very few fandoms. What are some of your biggest fandoms besides DA?: Supernatural, Greek Gods, and Harry Potter, but I’m... not actively involved in them, though I’ve written far more in the HP fandom than any other. And Disney, I guess?  What blogs do you have in the DA fandom (or with a DA verse?): Just Solas right now. I have an OC I’m working on ( more like nervously avoiding, but I’ve been smacking myself mentally to get myself into gear ). I’ve always considered taking up Isabela or Shale or Alistair or ... literally anyone, but I can barely keep up with Solas lately.  What piece of media was your first experience with Dragon Age?: DRAGON AGE ORIGINS, which btw, is my favorite. I played that game so many times. I love all the DA games, but Orgins was something special. Kingdom Hearts got me interested in games, but Orgins got me interested in RPGS and it was just a magical experience for a young Nemo such as myself. Which is your favorite DA game?: Orgins. Seriously. I love it. I haven’t played it in a couple of years though because.... I’ve seen better graphics now and going back to Orgins and its wacky textures, I’ll get annoyed. Which is your favorite DA book or comic?: Cough. I haven’t actually read any? TO BE FAIR, I haven’t read many books in the past few years. I’ve only recently just started getting back into reading.  Who is your favorite DA character? I don’t have a specific favorite because I love everyone, but to narrow it down: Hawke, Solas, Fenris, Isabela, Varric, and a tie between Alistair/Zevran? When I first played Orgins, it used to be Alistair all day every day, and then Zevran. Then DA came out? IDK. I love all the characters except maybe one, and for those of you who know me, you may already know who that character is.  What is your favorite DA-verse creature? Halla and dragons. You can never have enough dragons. And Halla are just so pretty. I remember seeing them and thinking they looked silver and I just thought that was very cool and elf-like? if that makes sense. Like they looked like beautiful majestic elf creatures and it made perfect sense that the Dalish cared for them. ALSO MABARI!!! they may be dogs, but the breed Mabari doesn’t exist in real life, and I wish they did. Who is your favorite DA artist? Link us to some of their work?: Nipuni. I love all her work, but I especially love the way she draws Solas. What’s your favorite DA fanfic? Give us a link and a description?: I love all of LoquaciousQuark’s hawke/fenris work. I think she’s a wonderful writer, and she captures the best Fenris I’ve ever read. This is my favorite story from her. Basically, Hawke gets a letter saying she now owns everything Danarius did because she defeated him in fair battle, so everything he owned goes to her. Which means Fenris and all the slaves and houses that Danarius owned. So Hawke and Fen and Co. go to Tevinter to find a way to free all the slaves and allow them to become their own person. Basically Hawke finds a loophole in Tevinter society, I guess. I just really like it because Fenris’ reactions are believable, and he gets to find some closure.

But my recent favorite is Looking Glass by feynites.  What was the best gift you’ve ever gotten?: Is it sad I don’t really remember? I guess when my friend got my a 5lb bag of chocolate covered sunflower seeds and I had only asked for a small bag, lol. Ever played a good prank?: Nope. I once changed my dad’s background to very muscluar men and changed his ring tone to ‘it’s raining men’, and then proceeded to call him while he was at work, but that’s it. Best trip you’ve ever taken?: Never really taken a trip, tbh. I’ve always wanted to see Ireland though. Best advice you’ve ever gotten?: Try to recognizes progressive worrying and nonprogressive worrying. That worrying over something you can’t control isn’t going to help you, but it’s not wrong either to worry about something that’s happening now and something you can control? I guess? Idk, she explained it better. I’ve been given a good advice, but a problem with me is that I’ll listen to it and I’ll... forget or not really listen because hey, i have anxiety IF YOU WEREN’T AWARE since I flippin say it 90% of the time. I’m sorry. Anyway, that’s it.

Middle year’s resolution - Project “Comment all the fics you ass”

Today something happened that made me stop and think.

I got praised by a client for half an hour about my design for him and how grateful he was for all the hard work and long hours I’m putting into supervising the construction of the houses we’re building. Nothing extraordinary and nothing that has not happened before, but as tired as I was from the long hours I’ve been pulling and as exhausted as I was of dealing with all the headaches of managing multiple construction sites at once, I felt... reinvigorated is the word I’m looking for, I suppose. Like I suddenly wasn’t so tired anymore, and I went back to my desk to work with renewed intent.

And as I sat down a thought popped into my head out of the blue.

“That must be what fanfiction writers feel when they get a nice, heartfelt comment”. And I felt bad. Really bad.

Because for many years now I’ve spent a good portion of my free time reading fanfiction, and thoroughly enjoying it. They have made me laugh, cry, they have brought me comfort during tough times and they have allowed me to get in touch with some of the writers that I appreciate so much both for their stories and, most importantly, for who they are as a person. 

And yet I’ve rarely told them how much I appreciated their work and the long hours they pulled to find the time to create something and the courage they had in sharing it with us. In short, I felt like I had been an ass, plain and simple.

Not that I didn’t know it before today - in the back of my mind I was always acutely aware of it - but there was always a reason why I felt like I had nothing noteworthy to contribute. I was too shy, or too busy, or I felt like I couldn’t properly articulate why I enjoyed something. 

But today I’ve decided I owe it to the wonderful writers whose stories I’ve enjoyed so much over the years to leave something a little more articulate than a click on a heart-shaped icon. So starting today I’m going back and I’ll leave a comment for all my favourite fics and I will continue to do so because they deserve it. 

It would be simpler if it didn’t take me half and hour to write a 2 paragraphs comment in English so I could probably finish before the Sun turns into a supernova, but no more excuses. It will be done.

And a heartfelt thank you in advance to the writers I’ve grown to know here on tumblr, even if I’ve been out of touch for a long time - I’ve not forgotten you and I’ve thought of you often, and I’m so glad to have found some of you still here now that I’m back.

@lilouapproves you’re like the fandom-sister I never had. There’s something about you that makes me want to just bubble away about headcanons and what ifs and all the characters - I hope we can get to do that again soon

A little Fenris/Hawke ficlet for @loquaciousquark, inspired by her Hawke’s Journal. Shoutout to @jadesabre301 for the idea!

“Fenris.”

No answer. Hawke knows he heard her, but his eyes stay glued to his book as though it’s more interesting than here. It doesn’t even have any saucy scenes in it!

“Fenris!”

He sighs and lifts his head. Doesn’t close the book, just looks at her, one eyebrow raised.

“Nobody has commented yet.”

“Commented on what.”

“My journal.”

“Why would anyone comment on that. It’s private.”

Hawke rolls her eyes. “Not if you post it on the internet.”

Fenris seems to choke on his own spit at that. While he is busy coughing and trying not to die, Hawke grabs some candies from one of the beautiful, filigrane, ornamental teacups she uses as candy holders, because she does not drink tea. Toby, resting next to her on the couch, perks up when he hears her chewing.

“Awww, sorry buddy! This is not for you!” She shoves more candy in her mouth. Toby pouts and whines. Hawke takes his face between her hands and squeezes. “Don’t be sad! You’re the best boy! My best boy! Yes, you are! Yes!”

“The internet!?”

Oh, right.

“Yes, I’m posting my journal on the internet, Fenris. It’s what people do who live in the modern age and don’t yell at their smartphones because they can’t handle touchscreens.”

“Your typing has gotten much worse with touchscreens and you know it,” he grumbles.

She ignores him. “Anyway, I posted like five minutes ago and haven’t gotten a comment yet! I literally have 1780 followers and only about 1500 of them are pornbots! Why is nobody reading what I wrote! This entry is so good, I used so many smart words! Fenris! Why!?”

Fenris simply stares at her for a few seconds, then huffs a laugh. A fond one. Because he loves her! “I have no clue what you’re talking about. But maybe… those ‘followers’ are… busy. Or not on the internet right now.”

“Nonsense, you can’t be off the internet anymore. Impossible.”

Fenris rolls his eyes. Hawke grins at him. Fenris frowns, a suspicious look on his face. This guy.

“You should comment. Make an account, go to my blog, and comment!”

“Can’t I just read it and tell you my opinion in person? Since we’re in the same room.”

“No.”

He rolls his eyes, but he does so fondly. Because he loves her. And then he grabs his laptop. Success!

Ten minutes later, she still hasn’t gotten a comment yet and her candy-cup is empty. Toby has fallen asleep and Hawke entertains herself by watching her favourite Galaxy Quest scenes on the internet.

Suddenly, Fenris scoffs. “He’s taller than I thought elves generally were. Really. That was your first impression?”

“I told you to not comment in person! And you should read on, of course there’s more than just the fact you’re tall!”

“His eyes were really rather green. Poetic, truly. You’d put Varric to shame.” Fenris smirks at her and Hawke can’t help it, her heart skips a beat. Why is he so handsome? Outrageous.

“Come on, you have to admit that these are really well written!”

“I can’t deny you’re more eloquent in writing than when you talk.”

“... A very backhanded compliment. But I’ll take it.”

Fenris smirks again, shakes his head, and looks back down at his laptop.

Hawke bites her thumb while she looks at him. She wonders… “Fenris.”

“I will write a comment. Be patient.”

“No, that’s not… I mean, yes, please! But… what was your first impression of me?”

Fenris stills, then closes his laptop and puts it aside. Looks at her, intently. “Mhm. That was a long time ago.”

“Yes,” Hawke whispers. She doesn’t know why, it just suddenly feels like the kind of moment where she should be quiet. Fenris’ eyes are really rather green and… piercing. “But you remember, don’t you?”

“Yes. Maybe I should write about it on the internet, so a bunch of pornbots can read it.”

“Or… you could tell me now.”

Fenris puts his laptop on the couch table, gets up from his comfy chair and quickly crosses the short distance between them. Rather than even considering getting up, Hawke takes his hand and pulls him down on the couch. He lets himself be pulled, then pulls her, until she’s sitting in his lap, his arms around her, his gaze hot on her face, her lips.

Hawke can’t resist and presses a kiss to the corner of his mouth. “So, tell me.”

“I could. Or I could…”

He kisses her -, intently, properly, passionately, longingly. Gosh, she really knows so many words. Her journal will be a hit!

“Hawke,” Fenris murmurs between kisses.

“Mhm?”

“Are you going to tell the internet about this, too?” He tightens his hold on her.

“Well, the pornbots might be into it!”

She starts laughing, well, cackling, but Fenris silences her with a look from his definitely very green eyes. His lips are definitely very soft. And then…

But the internet won’t hear about that.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY QUARKY

Yes, my darling @loquaciousquark‘s birthday is today, which is great, because now we all have a reason to shout our love for her into the vast abyss that is tumblr. (Okay, because I passed out into a deep sleep before I could finish this post, this is a day late but IT DOESN’T MEAN IT DOESN’T COME FROM THE HEART!)

Quarkypoo, I love you very much and I’m very happy that somehow a wonderful friendship developed from me sending you mocking asks and mocking you in general and us playing video games. I wish timezones were keeping us apart less, but there’s nothing we can do. (I mean, you COULD move, I guess, have you ever considered that, Europe is lovely in autumn.) Anyway, one of the reasons I initially followed you on tumblr was because I was collecting all my favourite dragon age kinkmeme writers like Pokémon. What I loved (and still do) about your stories is how well rounded they are. Which is one of the reasons why Ascendi is maybe my favourite. IT’S SO WELL STRUCTURED, perfect for a concept album of piano improvs! You handle your plot and your characters with the same care you handle all human interactions! Varaniaaaaaaaaaaaaaa. But, I want to say. The story I’m most excited about is your next one. And the one after that. And the one after that. Because there will be more even if maybe sometimes you think you have forgotten how to write. You can’t escape! I don’t care what characters in which universe, I just know it’ll be wonderful. Because the things everyone loved about your old stories are still there and the things we all love about you are there as well, they always shine through. I’m already excited! In the meantime, you know I’m always here if you need to let out some frustrations (you’re allowed to do that, you know! yell it all out boo) or bump around some story ideas or play video games, it has been ages somehow???
