chara: faroe - yeah <3 - older than how old we hc faroe to have been (~4), closer to ~8 - pacifist arthur is just trying to figure out what happened to her, genocide is trying to get revenge

papyrus: butcher - DEFINITELY a "thought it'd be funny" (papyrus 🤝 butcher: die via head remova💥) - more fits his malevolent personality than papyrus's . by a long shot (but reading papyrus lines in the butcher's voice is fucking hilarious) - not related to noel. just 2 guys living together. for no reason. hope this helps <3 /silly

undyne: yellow - mostly thought itd be fitting 👍 also i can imagine him doing undyne's speech well - HATES being asked if he's related to the king (bc they sound uncannily similar) . /SILLY

alphys: larson - kinda thought itd be fitting mostly thought itd be funny - mew mew kissie cutie equivalent is literally just malevolent btw. (the characters have their undertale counterparts' names instead LOL). he found cds for it in the dump. he's alphys-level obsessed w/ it

asgore: the king in yellow - "king in yellow" is more formal, most ppl just call him hastur - pretty good king, but tends to seem cold and unaffectionate . very few people know - hired oscar to help get people's actual opinions on what sorts of things he should do bc. ppl were too nervous to go to him LOL - still a boss monster, but not goatlike! he's still a tentacle creature thing GLKJSHD <3 - created john via asexual reproduction <3 (he's aroace . to me :3)

Speaking of putting The Fuckers™️ in places they shouldn’t be. I’ve been thinking and developing for like since June on putting the core 4 into Undertale. GB, Mikey, and Nikey all wake up in the first patch of buttercups together, much to Mikey and Nikey’s dismay. But Fuse is nowhere to be seen. Hmmmmmm. They begin to venture through the underground, Toriel being very surprised to find three adults instead of the usual one child. She’s a little standoffish towards them at first but warms up a little to their company. She doesn’t feel the need to guide them through the ruins obviously, since they’re, yknow, adults. This does lead to Mikey and GB almost being impaled through the feet. Nikey stopped them before they could though.

Oh yeah, about their “route”. It’s pacifist obviously, but Nikey at first had to be held back from killing a few (a lot) of monsters just for being “in my way.”.

They exit the ruins and meet sans who is just his usual self, a little bit thrown off by there being, again, three adult men instead of the usual child. Sans is just like. “Timeline fuckery? Maybe.” (Maybe) but they continue with their walk through the forest, eventually meeting Papyrus. Which is just like. Instant besties with everyone except Nikey.

Nikey takes note of his more quote unquote “naive” nature (just according to his observations. He’s just making assumptions.) and attempts to form sort of the same relationship/a relationship akin to Papyrus’ relationship with Flowey, but sans has a little “friendly chat” with him, which leads him to begrudgingly lay his hands off of Papyrus.

(GB and Mikey end up going on the date with Papyrus, but Nikey stays behind them to explore and try to gain any information he can on where he is and how he got there. He ends up getting the wrong number song call and sees a strange figure in the corner of his eye. But when he looks at it directly to see what it is, it’s gone.)

They continue past Snowdin into Waterfall and “meet” Undyne as she tries to hunt them down. She fails, as all three of them are quite experienced in battle and dodging attacks and such. Especially GB.

They end up stopping by Temmie Village, which Nikey promptly has to pry the other two away because they refuse to leave. “The Temmie’s are adorable though! You just don’t know how to have fun.” “Maybe. But what I do know is that you idiots will let us all starve here rather than leave your… weird dogs behind and get on with trying to find a way out of here.”

Nikey ends up taking the reigns on the fight with Undyne, which keeps getting interrupted because GB and Mikey won’t stop running away, which Undyne will NOT let happen, and so she keeps chasing after them until they’re all in battle with her, and then GB and Mikey run away again which Nikey is VERY annoyed by because he want to FIGHT HER GODDAMMIT.

Nikey ends up running after her every time she tries to catch the other two, so he’s behind her when she collapses out from heat exhaustion. GB ends up being the one to pour the water on her because Mikey will not drop his whole “I hate Magma and Aqua” shtick. SPEAKING OF WHICH. This bitch HATES Hotland!!!! He refuses to take off his jacket even when he’s literally about to pass out so GB has to convince him to take it off. It takes like an entire hour. Nikey however willingly does so, draping his coat over his shoulders (see Commander Kamado).

Anyways I’m getting off track. Kind of. ???

They all end up going on the date with Undyne, which Nikey takes the reins on once again, Undyne and him constantly bouncing off of eachother in terms of quips and just general shenanigans.

Nikey ends up softening up a little after befriending Undyne, which the other two don’t hesitate to playfully poke fun at him for. Nikey is frustrated with this and threatens to throw them into Hotlands lava ocean if they don’t be quiet.

When they get to the lab, they see someone familiar emerge from the True Lab with Alphys. Fuse. Interesting. They dont really have time to get Fuse to explain himself to them, as Mettaton is now set off and on their trail. Which. BY THE WAY. GB and Mikey absolutely ADORE. Nikey’s a fan of his antics as well but is very annoyed he keeps interrupting their journey as they try to escape.

Anyways, when Mettaton EX is revealed and that entire battle starts, Mikey takes literally all the reins on it and is just KILLING IT. Literally makes the ratings multiply by 5 by just being there and fucking slaying. Mikey ends up being sad that the battle has to end due to Mettaton, well, yknow, and is very concerned for his robot friend. Alphys reassures him it’s okay and Mettaton can be fixed… maybe. Which is good enough for him

Right after this is right about the time they end up receiving the phone call from Undyne asking them to deliver her confession letter to Alphys. Which they do, and the date is very cute :)

Of course the good feelings don’t last for long in their case, as it comes time for them to venture into Alphys’ true lab. Which surprise surprise! Fuse is there :)

Turns out, he’d been manipulating Alphys to his advantage, so that she would let him experiment on the amalgams for himself. The experiments weren’t just limited to fusions though, oh no, they got much worse. There were a few times Fuse almost got Alphys backed into a corner to let him try to fuse her with another monster just to see if it would work, but she always seemed to escape by the skin of her teeth.

Anyways. Shit happens in the lab. Fuse tries to kill everyone except for him, but he ends up being restrained and stopped before he can execute his plans. GB, Mikey, and Nikey take Fuse off of Alphys’ hands and apologise like a million times for his actions. Alphys insists it’s fine but… yeah no it’s not fine. Girlie needs therapy more than ever.

They end up having to tie Fuse up with a rope and drag him along that way. They also have to put rope around his mouth because he will not. Stop. Saying the weirdest and most creepy shit in the world.

They venture through the core, where Fuse tries to kick all of them into the cores void pit like five times before he gives up. Oughhhhh I’m losing steam >:(

The entire fight with Asriel plays out, and Asriel takes form as his child-self.

Turns out, fuse has been slowly chipping away at the ropes binding him the entire time he was in them. He breaks free.

Fuse ends up attacking Asriel when he’s in his child form, and taking all of the souls, absorbing them into his body. Unfortunately for literally everyone else, this turns him into a god. I’m not sure how the fight for the souls would play out, but just know that they fuck up Fuse’s shit and nearly kill him. Yay!

A few minutes after the barrier is broken, they end up being sent back home, to which everyone is like “Was that a dream I swear it wasn’t. GB and Mikey end up getting on FaceTime and being like “DUDE DO YOU REMEMBER-“ and the other’s like “YEAH HOLY SHIT.”

Nikey waits a few days to confirm it with the other two because he’s not sure if it happened or not, and it’s be rather embarrassing if he just walked up to Mikey like they were acquaintances if literally that entire ordeal didn’t really happen. Luckily for him, it did. This ends up in Mikey and Nikey being on… okay terms for the most part.

Fuse however is just like :)

ALPHYS SUPREMACY!!!

so my own view on what happened w gaster is convoluted and incomplete so i will refrain from saying much on that front EXCEPT the fact that i hc that she was 100% close to him and he was close to her, i like to think that he often validated her ideas and her hyperfixations. i think she was super nervous around him always and terrified of disappointing him, but he never thought of her that way. he saw her as intelligent and driven and i love the idea that out of everyone he worked with, hes very happy alphys ended up succeeding him. i love the thought that he basically thought of her as his daughter, like he was so genuinely proud of her and her accomplishments and genuinely happy to see her happy. i think she showed him anime once and he was very so-so abt it and she could tell but he still told her the parts of it he liked and that she shouldnt be ashamed of liking things others might not (which, for my view of gaster, is mildly insane bc i hc him as a man who barely ever talks abt stuff like that but this shit aint abt him)

her and sans's friendship is so underexplored it literally kills me bc what do you MEAN basically noone ever gives a shit abt it???? their friendship is so so important to me. i like to think they met in high school or college, that alphys is a year or two younger but was in all the same classes (and some more advanced than him) bc she really *is* that smart (a fact i think a lot of people forget bc so many reduce her to just "annoying weeb" and it pisses me off) so theyd collab on projects and study together and stuff. she was absolutely a straight-a student but she would panic over every assignment bc of her self-confidence issues and would convice herself that she would fail (she never did. she very consistently scored at the top of the class).

i think she compared herself to sans a lot, too. bc i see him as the epitome of adhd-type procrastinator who still got good grades somehow and seemed to just- understand every concept thrown at him immediately. and she would invalidate her own work over this bc "sans never does anything but hes still at the same level as me. meanwhile i have to do all this work and im stressed all the time. god im such a failure, i wish i could just be flawlessly smart like him" (this is not projection this is not projection this is n) but i dont think she ever said it out loud bc she didnt wanna seem like she was seeking pity or smthn (sans picked up on it anyway bc bro is canonically that observant and he hyped her up in his own way as much as he could without saying anything outright bc if hes anything he is a man who does not want to confrot feelings, his own or someone elses, fucking EVER).

and like during the events of undertale theyre obviously still friends but i think they drifted apart a little. between sans's depression and alphys's own, plus her workload and stress, they didnt really get to hang out much anymore, nor be as close or as open with each other as they had been previously (which wasnt even that much considering. sans. but the shift was still noticeable). this definitely added to her stress and fears (add on to that that mostof their communication was likely thru text and alphys is absolutely a very expressive texter and someone who usually takes like seconds to reply while sans is the worlds dryest texter, would probably leave you on read (not maliciously) for days or not even read your messages until like a week later). but still he helped her out where he could and he kept hyping her up bc thats his fucking friend, man!! and then theres that list in the dog shrine casino on?? whichever fucking console version of ut it is i dont remember that is very heavily implied to be alphys's game recs for sans which i think is so cute.

i think when they did hang, theyd watch anime and eat junk food and watch movies and play video games and just kinda. not talk abt their problems at all, but it still felt nice for both to just hang with someone plus escapism so. also once she got her big fat crush on undyne (and probably before w other crushes but especially with her crush on undyne) shed sit there and tell him all abt it, the things she did/said, how nervous alphys is, how badly she wants to just ask her out etc. and sans, in typical aro/ace fashion, would just nod along, happy for his friend, and, when asked for advice, would just shrug and go "idk talk to her ig?" (pan to undynes house where the exact same conversation happens with papyrus and undyne lmfao)

and like. i think alphys is just in general the type of person to get overinvested in any kind of relationship, even if it seems like the other person doesnt feel the same. like shes probably had friendships in which she was super invested in the other person and so happy to hear from them and worrying when she didnt and letting them vent to her etc only to find out that the other person barely thought of her as an acquintance (this is NOT PROJECTION I SWE)

she absolutely would be into cosplay but initially be too shy and too full of self-loathing to really like. do it. and this is where another one of my all-time fav friendships that NOONE talks abt emerges and that is ALPHYS AND PAPYRUS. LIKE PAPYRUS IS ABSOLUTELY THE TYPE OF PERSON SHE NEEDS IN HER LIFE. he hypes her up constantly, he calls her out when shes being negative abt/mean to herself and tells her how to change that around, hes an absolute beacon of positivity and confidence and the kind of person you really feel like you can be yourself around. theyd fucking cosplay together. theyd sit down and make cosplay together from scratch. undyne would be there too, obv. i think she initially helped out, making like props and whatnot, but she kept getting too excited and smashing them, so now shes just there as moral support + she can wear the in-progress cosplay to like. help them see how its coming along, what they need to change, etc. and i think she still is like. the authority on a lot of weapons (esp prop spears) bc she has experience.

and yknow whod also help them?? toriel. i love toriel and alphys friendship, i think they have a book club-type thing going together. tori would come over and help them sew together fabric and whatnot, and also bring pie bc everyone fucking loves pie (everyone has made pie together with her at some point. even asgore, tho that was long, long ago). sans is there occasionally. noone ever sees him do any work but his parts are always done and noone knows how.

she goes to cons with undyne and papyrus and i think frisk goes w them bc WHY THE FUCK NOT. god she must have been so happy the first time she went to a con... not only is it a whole ass space all abt anime, but theres people *like her* there and suddenly she doesnt feel like the weirdo freak, shes just a girl enjoying her life and her hyperfixation and its so freeing.... she probably stays all days of the con (undyne probably stays with her, papyrus and frisk have to leave but they get photo updated almost hourly)

she probably ends up getting asgore into anime, at least somewhat. she goes over to his house and they drink tea and watch anime and she infodumps abt specific moments with her favorite characters and how important they are lore-wise/thematically and asgore goes "golly!" and listens to all of it and asks questions and alphys is so fucking *excited* bc she gets to talk even *more* abt her favorite thing and she goes into headcanons and theories and then later asgore sends her like. a photo of an anime boy he stumbled on and goes "this reminded me of you!" and shes just so happy abt it. he gives her flowers, also. both in bouquet form and potted plants. she takes care of them very, very diligently.

she still does science stuff on the surface. im not smart so idk what but she does it. she helps frisk w their homework (everyone does but shes in charge of sciency and mathy stuff bc shes good at that) and when theyre done they get boba or something to celebrate and frisk tells her abt school and abt their fellow students and teachers, she talks abt the people at her work. they play video games together (they definitely both play pokemon. they trade with each other to complete their dex. frisk is doing a shiny living dex and giving her their dupes, especially if its a pokemon she likes.) i just love her as like- an aunt/big sister type figure to frisk. theres that one drawing of them that lives in my head constantly but i DONT REMEMBER WHO ITS BY

her playlist is full of vocaloid songs. and ado. she does official sciency stuff to the sound of hatsune miku and yknow what? me too, good for her.

i almost forgot mettaton somehow?? but their friendship specifically BREAKS ME bc were shown in ut that theyre not particularly close by the time frisk arrives. that it seems like mmt is more or less using her so he can have his body finished and go on to become a star, but thats it. but like you can tell that 1) alphys knows this and 2) she still cares for him so, so much. and i believe in one of the king mtt endings he explicitly says that, looking back, he recognizes he was *awful* to her, that he regrets it and that he wishes he had been a better friend. and that shit FUCKS. ME. UP.

oh god the fucking conversation theyd need to have. once its all over, once theyre on the surface... bc i do think they had one. they laid down on the floor and stared at the ceiling and told each other about their insecurities and their lies. alphys talks about how nervous she was finishing his body, how she felt he would leave her once she did. he talks about how he did think of that, that he was an awful friend for doing so. how he cares about her and hes done letting the fame go to his head, that he wont up and leave her, his first fan as mettaton. his friend. she probably also helps her talk to napstablook and shyren, bc i do like to think he tells them the truth.

i like the though of her, on the surface, sitting on the couch in toriel'd house, drinking a cup of tea, her friends all around her talking and having fun and she just thinks about the type of person she was before all this and she realizes how much shes changed. how much happier she is. how much she loves every single person in that room with her.

alphys... like. the journey to her betterment is not a quick or an easy one. but god... shes just so relatable i do not understand people who dont like her. shes so interesting and deep as a character. shes so... shes so. man....

im running out of steam a little (and need to get back to what i was doing before this) but shes genuinely so epic. shes so awesome and cool and i wish more people recognized that.

alphys is so underrated and everyone says it but nobody does anything about it. alphys’ relationship with gaster. her dynamic with sans. her self loathing eating away at the inside. her literal suicide attempt.??? i like to hc that alphys is like a sister figure to sans but not quite papyrus. i like to think she was there when gaster fell into the core. i like to think that she spent ages piecing the puzzle together only to have so many missing pieces in the end as to what happened, who the royal scientist before her was, why she remembers things that never happened. i like to hc that the amalgamates were kind to her despite what she’d done, and their attempts at comfort after seeing her guilt only made her feel worse.

i like to think that sans isn’t the star of the mystery science scene because fucking obviously, and his and alphys’ stories are intertwined. i think that alphys helps him with the secret machine in the back of his home. i think that alphys asks sans for favors regarding the amalgamates without him knowing what for (he does know, she knows that he knows, neither talk about it much). i think they’re besties who are both so depressed. i like to think alphys in her free time sits and writes fanfiction about her favorite anime characters going through what she does to cope.

i think she would cosplay but be too scared to go outside in it so she posts one picture online and then hides from her phone the rest of the day. i think once or twice she passed out from sheer exhaustion and stress combined in front of mettaton and he’s been her rock through it all and helped her get to her feet. i hc that she has frequent headaches and a brain injury which gave her a stutter. i hc she and frisk are actually close and they do ‘sleepovers’ where alphys shows them anime and they hang out and toriel gets free babysitting. i like to think alphys, after going to the surface, is more comfortable with being a nerd because wdym humans have CONVENTIONS for her favorite anime!?!??!? and that’s a key part of helping her be more comfortable with herself (undyne cosplays with her voluntarily so alphys doesn’t feel awkward).

okay so a friend already showed me a google doc about that route and it is WILD, but i hadnt seen the video. here's all my thoughts in a long reaction post:

umm?????? i was JUST speculating about who the angel could be, is it NOELLE? why is she the only one that can geno, why can't the player geno through just kris??? what does it MEAN to be able to be the angel? @ericvilas and i were talking about how this felt like noelle, susie, and berdly were the main characters, and we were just kinda...Also There, is there some sort of property that "main characters" have? the power to fundamentally change the state of the world from "zany adventure" to "fucked up horror", that we needed noelle to take advantage of? is that why we needed chara in undertale?

is "the angel" more than just a prophecy, but some sort of...RPG Game Role, that the genocidal player covets? why couldn't we fill that role in chapter one? why noelle and not susie? is it because ralsei wouldn't let us? or is noelle, daughter of the mayor, a secret Boss Monster? and the Angel has to be a human soul and a boss monster soul, like asriel and chara were?

why does NOELLE level up, but kris, the one who's soul we're in control of, doesn't?

this feels like we somehow...modded the deltarune by doing geno. like it reskinned the mettaton ex fight, but like, thematically. like rather than reusing assets, it reused *concepts* from undertale and mixed them all up. but i don't know what that MEANS.

oh god okay, so KRIS wanted their friends to save them from this fucking NIGHTMARE, but WE wanted noelle to come finish the job. i think that pretty firmly indicates it is indeed the PLAYER, and not KRIS who is evil here. god, poor kris. poor noelle. i am VERY suspicious now of whether closing the fountains is a good idea or not.

okay i already knew berdly fucking died at the end of this run, so this isn't a shock, but it IS startling to see an actual corpse. not turned to dust, not a statue, not frozen in place, actually just a dead body. that....i also don't know what that means.

god it feels so much worse actually to have destroyed the integrity of the game and then it just....keeps going. no one even knows the horrible things you did.

okay so i think we're getting to a point that the Player is a genuine character, not literally us anymore. like, they have an agenda? they know somehow that noelle is important, even though we, the literal player didn't? it feels like this Entity may represent us in-fiction (like the mspa reader started out in homestuck), but in undertale the geno route was clearly like, "the version of us that dicked around just to see All The Content." this feels different. pre-meditated. they have a SPECIFIC plan, that somehow requires noelle, and jevil probably. hm. it feels like the player knows where the genocide route is going, and is doing it intentionally, even though we the audience obviously have no idea what will happen in chapters 3-5.

A list of stuff thats just papyrus's tid bits i've collected overtime!

(Disclaimer: some things can be taken off of memory, though I did search most of the stuff up, so you dont have to worry too much. But if your feeling unsure, search it up! And correct me while your at it.)

his room doesn't play/have music.

(If you have reunited playing at enter his room, it'll disappear forever. Untill you go back and let it play again. Even without reunited, a song that plays no matter what room your in, doesn't play any music.)

Never takes off his battle body.

(According to sans, he only takes it off if he has no other choice too. Otherwise he'll just put clothes ontop of it, or just repaints it if needed. He does how ever, change his pants but never takes off the top.)

the minute "royal gaurd " is out of the picture, he's got nothing.

(It was the one thing he worked up for. When the royal gaurd disbands He says he "working hard on doing absolutely nothing". Then again this can be interpreted as papyrus does say he is working on something, despite not being a royal gaurd yet.)

He lies. (And can manipulate)

(Though he is really bad at lying, he seems to manipulate just fine, though its usually not out of malice. He gets undyne to befreind you by mentioning "challenge", which is a weakness of hers, since she never can turn down a challenge. And has lied about floweys name to her to. Has lied to sans or atleast mislead him about the things he knows about. Pretended he didn't know what a lab was during a call in hotland, but if you call him when sans isn't there, papyrus mentions the lab as if it was common knowledge instead of saying "Labrador-y?" As if he had no idea.)

Changes up his attacks

( if you get captured a few times, you see variation in his attacks. If you do it right, you can get him too skip half of his entire attack.)

Calls his own puzzles "Awful"

(This happens after battling papyrus, he says "WHO KNEW THAT ALL I NEEDED TO MAKE PALS... WAS TO GIVE PEOPLE AWFUL PUZZLES AND THEN FIGHT THEM??" This could be interpreted in many ways.)

Spikes, fire, traps, fencless bridges: are all safe for children, according to papyrus.

("EACH AREA HAS TO HAVE A PRECARIOUS BRIDGE" -bridge likely to collapse, dangerous. "ITS MANDATED BY THE GOVERNMENT. OF COURSE KING FLUFFYBOY WANTS TO UNMANDATE IT SAFER." "WHY?! WONT HE THINK OF THE CHILDREN?!)

(Sadly, asgore and papyrus has crossed paths. Asgore advises him not to but dangerous puzzles around town, for the children. Papyrus wants to put dangerous puzzles around town, for the children. This results in them bickering over saftey laws, with papyrus usually winning.)

(On multiple occasions calls flowey "his best freind" and shows genuine love for the little guy. He even gave flowey a little red scarf to match his, during the 5th anniversary winter alarm clock.)

During a call in waterfall, with the puddle hallway, papyrus talks about not letting it "get to you" or something along the lines of that. Since undyne speaks from her experience with the puddles, then i'd assume papyrus would too.)

(I think its just a sign of self doubt or insecurity. Someone once said its dysphoria, which is a cool headcannon for paps or something. What ever it is, he has some demons that he doesn't want to let out.)

( Interpretive: Other than that, he's not even noticable. Though, there are a few people that appreciate him, most dont really acknowledge him. Unless you kill him of course!)

Sad/depressed?

( interpreitive as well:Before the human showed up, sans explains how his brother was feeling quite down lately. We see a.. Happier side of papyrus through out our journey.. He vents out to us, the player/human, about things he dislikes, or troubles he faces. Hes like a froggit. Life is hard for a froggit.)

("This is where I tried to capture you! What a bad memory." -quote he says as he smiles through it all. He does have a sad emote, but so far i have only seen it during a call in hotland, where the CORE was shown. As your adventure is coming close.. To an end.)

Uses his playful "OUCH!" emote when you straight up kill him. Instead of his hurting/in pain emote when flowey catches him off guard before absorbing everyonesones souls.

(The reason is unkown, but that emote is normally associated with more of "light taps." Examples are, toriel's fireballs at asgore and flowey. Unless... Cutting off his head was considered a "light tap" then, but flowey wrapping him in painful vines is considered more painful than getting his head chopped off and still having enough consciousness to joke about it.)

He knows his cooking sucks and that nobody likes it.

(He's not naive. He knows. He even says it. "Nobody has like my cooking before!" - QUOTE. This isn't some hidden fact. He's trying his best, "mabye next year, he might even make something edible." -sans quote.)

Mad Mew Mew is an amazing addition to undertale and i'm personally SO glad she's in the game. She's full of life just like every single character Toby Fox writes, personally I love the fact that we have a ghost possessing an anime catgirl animatronic that not only loves ska music but CANONICALLY skanks, loves knives and violence, is a video game streamer, is completely chaotic and unhinged and CUTE and we love her for it <3 not to mention she just. lives in papyrus's and sans' sink??? like she just ..floated in. do u think they know? are they friends?

also im very biased because my personal favorite characters in the pc version of undertale are alphys, mettaton, undyne, and napstablook and she just fits in perfectly like a missing puzzle piece bringing everyone together and UGH . i jst love her me and every other winter alarm clock dialogue enjoyer are waiting Patiently for it to be released. (this will never happen).

She is the only character that you can defeat through fighting in a true pacifist ending of undertale, because you cannot truly kill her, just destroy the vessel she's inhabiting, which is honestly really tragic because you spend the whole battle listening to her talk about how much she loves this body and that she finally for once in her life feels like "herself". she even has a sprite for this* and she promises to get revenge on you . she's easily the most tragic character in the true pacifist ending and i love her so dearly . she struggles with a lot of the same family issues as mettaton, and i absolutely love to hate the dramatic irony of her rivalry with him. the way she thinks about him when she finds that humanoid dog statue??? stop it. im gonna cry. as someone who ADORES mettaton and all four of the ghost cousins honestly she gives their whole family dynamic a lot more depth <3 also here's that sprite :

Pretty sure this body interfaces with it somehow! There's some Mew Mew game on there, where if you press the controller… It makes my body's voice box speak in response to what's onscreen! Alphys was using it trying to find this body right when I, er, took it over! I could hear her footsteps approaching as she kept tapping the X button… I crouched in the corner, trying to cover my mouth and voicebox, but… My body kept yelling 'Right here! I'm right here, mew!' Finally, when she was just about to turn the corner and see me… I stood up and shouted with my own voice. 'I'M RIGHT HERE, MEW!' As someone who's played undertale over 100 times on the switch port (#autism) even though she's a skippable character i make sure to visit her every single route because she's so FUN! Her battle mechanic is super enjoyable and her dialogue is really fun too. and yes. shes trans. thats pretty cool too. but personally i feel more seen by the whole. catgirl rude girl? like. ska is so good. i think every character should be more like Her : obsessed with alternative music, combat, bloodlust, and destruction. but just like mettaton she has way more to her character than being trans and i wish everyone could give her credit where credit is due!!!! plus every single toby fox character is written with so much love like i genuinely dont understand how you could think that a toby fox character isnt deserving of its own dedicated fan base. like have you seen sans. papyrus. Mettaton, even?

I'm just slow about it since answering a lot of these questions requires consulting the OG creator @biryu13 (i'm only like.... 33% Creator ;3 lol) We got in a discord VC and talked about how to answer this. Here are my notes from that:

Falsi (RNG!Sans) and Percy (RNG!Papyrus) are technically both the Judge, but... their seed (the timeline of their AU) was borked so bad it was impossible to get to the judgement hall without hacking... although, if you did, somehow... it would be Falsi meeting you there. He would have called you a Dirty Hacker =)

There is no Annoying Dog. However, there is an Annoying Snail that keeps eating all the echo flowers. It is Falsi's friend

Falsi does not sell food of any kind. While in his AU, he always has hotdogs on hand, but those are his and he will eat them his own damn self (in front of you, if he has the mind to). if you somehow manage to aquire one, it would be cursed to be inedible to you. Falsi only had Cursed 'Dogs.

Speaking of food: Percy's spaghetti is god-tier spaghetti and ruins you for all other spaghetti.

Cole (RNG!Undyne) taught him how to cook. Hers is also amazing, but it is too spicy for mortal men

AS FOR RELATIONSHIPS:

Falsi & Diva (RNG!Toriel): Cold. They weren't particularly close. They weren't friendly at all, actually. That very lack of a good relationship was one of the many things that made their seed -- their timeline -- very borked

Susie (RNG!Alphys) / Cole (RNG!Undyne): Very In Love and married (which also sorta borked the seed but they are Not Sorry). Full on makeout sessions in front of everyone. Jump on tall buildings and scream into megaphones about how much they love each other (one needs to be a little more drunk than the other but hey-). Matching costumes for costume parties (or just whenever) so they can kiss in-character.

I think Undyne's determination has less to do with like something that happened in the past and more like the overlap between determination as an actual physical thing VS a spiritual thing. Whereas the amalgamates were injected with determination by Alphys, Undyne makes her OWN. You've killed her best friend. You're going to kill the love of her life. You're going to kill her mentor. You're going to kill everyone. You've killed HER. But she still has to stop you. Everyone is counting on her 1/2

Undyne's whole motif is letting the monsters of the Underground achieve their hopes and dreams. Theres a reason she is the boss fight in Waterfall, the most backstory rich area in the game. Hope and dreams have just as much weight as determination does, its what helps you defeat Asriel. And Undyne the Undying's design mimics Asriel's because in Genocide SHE is the heroine, SHE is the determined hero that defies death in order to save everyone she loves via the hopes and dreams of everyone (2/2)

even then, though, it’s stll so interesting bc like!!!! undyne’s courage is undeniable, and her fight to protect the underground plays Such a huge role in her whole waterfall arc. and, in the spiritual sense, she is absolutely determined!! that just makes me WONDER though bc, like, canonically, monsters Are Not determined! they don’t have that threshold!

and then, in looking at determination in the spiritual sense, what exactly makes undyne different? is it that her desire to live and protect the underground unlocks that threshold needed for determination? at one point, could monsters be determined, but then their millennia trapped underground biologically/psychologically stripped them of that? so then could any monster in the underground, when facing high enough stakes, have that determination? or is it just undyne?

bc then i think about the other bosses in either route, like papyrus, mettaton, asgore, sans. where undyne is the monster/boss capable of possessing determination, sans is probably the one least likely to have any threshold for determination (this is bc his entire boss fight is him realizing he can no longer be an observer, he is literally the last line of defense between chara and the annihilation of all monsters). mettaton is complicated bc as a napstablook turned corporeal, i dont even know where to BEGIN with him. but then there’s papyrus and!! it feels like he should be capable of feeling determined. in both the pacifist and genocide route, he is so assured that the human has some internal goodness. while, in the genocide route, that hope could be translated to fear, that still makes me wonder: under what circumstances could a monster’s determination be unlocked? is it not solely life or death? does it require some ulterior motives (aka undyne’s whole character being protecting the underground)? and like!!! it’s just so fun to think about bc, say it is undyne’s spiritual determination being unlocked, it’s so interesting that she’s the one differentiated!! that even papyrus, a character brimming with good and happiness and love, doesn’t have that determination, but undyne, who has a similar type of passion and goodness within her, does!!!

with experiment undyne, i will admit my theory is very much uhh wild! and unhinged! and, while my theory is much more playing in the “what if’s” of the science of artificial determination, it still makes me wonder! especially in the boss fight herself. ever since i first saw her genocide boss fight, i’ve always been a bit fixated on her eye, specifically the one w/ the eye-patch that eventually seems to have Some type of arrow power. while this definitely could have just been A Design Choice (and one i stand by!!), undertale is a game that reveals its complete lore when the pacifist and genocide route are put together. thus, in a hypothetical situation, i don’t think it would be out of the question that undyne’s eye could still Do that even in a pacifist route.

but even then, there are holes to poke! such as why doesn’t she use it? if undyne has been injected with artificial determination, why is she, frankly, normal until it’s a matter of life and death?

(to cut to the punchline before i get into my bullshit: i think it’s bc, at first, it seemed as if the artificial determination just Didn’t Work and had no affect, when in reality it needed to be met with spiritual determination as well)

and, again, i know i’m playing with a lot of hypotheticals right now, and mostly this is me just kinda fun bullshit theorizing, but i think it could have something to do with the fact that she has the threshold for spiritual determination! the reason i even think that she would offer herself up to determination experimentation is bc of the loyalty and love she has for asgore and the underground. i would argue that she is just as invested in asgore’s plan as asgore himself is, and she obviously sees him as some type of father-figure. so that alone gives her this Drive to do whatever it takes for the underground to survive.

so, therefore, i think in regards to this hypothetical experiment undyne, i think it quite literally is that spiritual determination threshold combined with artificial determination

and for that, i quickly want to talk abt the amalgamates and why they tie into this:

the timeline: corpses/souls injected with determination --> no reaction --> corpses wake up and act normal --> ??? happens  --> (quickly leads to) amalgamates

and so then that once again raises the question: what differentiates undyne? 

i think, for that, we then have to consider another question: if most monsters do not have the physical determination to continue living after death, can that determination be given when they’re already dead? monsters in general already have no threshold for determination, so can that be artificially made if it never existed in the first place? 

bc while alphys’s experiment, iirc, was to see what happened when a soul was injected with determination, i think the other much needed question is if monster souls could even Handle determination

and, while we do not know specifically what went wrong with the amalgamates (aka like How did they melt together), we do know that their physical forms really were not able to handle the artificial determination, imo most likely bc they do not even have a threshold for spiritual determination

but undyne is, as you have noted, different!

so, frankly, i think you’re right! i think undyne does have an inherent spiritual determination. it’s uncommon in monsters, but her want to save the world is enough to leave her determined

however, i think That would have just been enough to keep her alive

i think it’s artificial determination that gave her that final form! to reference  back to the amalgamates, they were all creatures whose powers we had seen before, but different now and, specifically, more powerful. that very same thing could be said for undyne! her powers are, essentially, things we have seen before, but fucking to Max Intensity 

AND THEN!! AND THEN!!!!!

when you do kill heroine undyne, she doesn’t turn to dust first

she melts first, and then turns to dust!!!!!

and, honestly, it’s that small detail that sent me down this rabbit hole, bc the only ever time we’ve seen monsters melted together are the amalgamates!

i think the main difference between heroine undyne and the amalgamates is the fact that undyne, at first, had No Reaction to the determination at first bc, since she most likely already had this secret threshold for spiritual determination, it wasn’t the Biggest of changes. it wouldn’t have had such a drastic reaction on her physical form bc, even if she didn’t know it yet, it wasn’t an entirely foreign substance

the amalgamates, however, aka monsters who had no spiritual determination, could only handle the artificial determination for an unknown amount of time before their bodies began rejecting the chemicals and becoming..... that

of course, then, this leaves me with even more questions, such as could undyne sustain this final form? would her body eventually give out, overcome by determination? was this form only meant for life or death situations?

and uhhh i think this is the end!! if you made it this far and are thinking to urself “damn you’re really an english major when you write like this?? this isn’t even comprehensible” do not fret!! i know this theory is kinda a shitshow, and it’s one of those things where i can keep myself up all night thinking abt this and talking myself in circles bc there are some points that i think have strengths and other points that are probably pretty weak

basically though!! i see the connection between artificial determination and undyne through the fact that her form actually changes, the reveal of her legit power eye, the way her attacks have been altered, and the fact that she melts at the end (akin to the amalgamates’ appearances) before poofing into dust

this is SUPER rambly and basically just speculating upon wild speculation upon more speculation, but I had to type out my thoughts on this

Sans and Papyrus are implied to be from another universe. Their home is apparently a place they can’t easily return to, with people who arent found in the Underground, and Sans eventually gives up on seeing the people he knew there ever again. It’s probably not just the surface, either, as Sans seems to view going to the surface as a separate thing from “going back” to his home (also Papyrus doesnt recognize the sun, so unless he was a baby when they came or he has serious amnesia, it wouldnt make much sense for them to be from the surface)

Sans and Papyrus are also implied to be connected to Gaster. so if they’re from another world, then the Gaster they knew logically wouldnt be UT Gaster.

But. this bothers me. the game gives us precious little info about Gaster...why would it then turn out there are actually TWO Gasters, one of whom we havent been told anything about?? The stuff we learn about Gaster is about UT Gaster - he lived underground, he built the CORE, he was Asgore’s royal scientist, his experiments went wrong and led to his demise. 

Gaster’s relation to the skelebros is obviously supposed to be important. They’re some of the only characters in the game he’s implied to have a connection to. so where does UT!Gaster fit into things then, if he’s NOT the one who knew them - and yet is the Gaster we have been told all about? what would be the point of having UT!Gaster? what would be the point of having the skelebros be connected to Gaster? it doesn’t make much sense to me.

(i suppose it’s possible they met Gaster after arriving in the Undertale timeline but it seems unlikely to me. The machine in their basement was likely a creation of Gaster’s, given the blueprints. that machine is also implied to be related to how the skelebros ended up in Undertale in the first place, which is why Sans wanted to fix it so badly. I also assume the reason Sans met Alphys is cause he sought out the Royal Scientist’s help in fixing the machine, which if correct would mean Gaster was long gone by the time he came around. on that note, there used to be a tweet from Toby where he says: “Neither of them could fix the machine, no matter how hard they tried”)

There are some things that just make sense when looking at in terms of building a story - why are these things there, what purpose do they serve? how are they supposed to connect together? For example, the biggest reason I think Gaster is closely related to the skelebros isn’t because there’s some smoking gun that proves anything - there isn’t, in fact we only have a few subtle hints showing a connection (like the fact they both can use Gaster Blasters). it’s because: why would Toby make a mysterious skeleton character, and give us hints that he is connected to two other mysterious skeleton characters who have a super vague backstory...and then not have them be related somehow?

So while it would be perfectly sensible for there to simply be an alternate dimension Gaster from whatever universe Sans and Papyrus came from (I’ve made a post wondering about this before actually), I dont feel it makes much sense from a narrative standpoint. what’s the purpose of having multiple Gasters? what’s the purpose of Undertale Gaster, and why do we learn just about him, when the Gaster who is tied to Sans&Papyrus should be more important to the story? 

but maybe i’m looking at it the wrong way. maybe UT!Gaster and the skelebros’ Gaster can be one and the same. what if Gaster left the Undertale universe, and was able to have kids elsewhere? either his ultimate fate - being shattered across time & space - actually happened later, after he arrived in the other dimension

or perhaps that did happen while he was in Undertale, but a piece of him was able to make a life in another world? after all, Gaster doesn’t seem dead-dead despite the incident or the fact that the Gaster Followers talk about him like he perished. he’s alive enough to reach out on Twitter, talk to us during the vessel creator scene, and to make the “SURVEY_PROGRAM” that is Deltarune. 

if I’m right about this, I think Entry Number Seventeen might take place shortly before the event which brought the skelebros into Undertale, and the “YOU TWO” are in fact Sans and Papyrus. Gaster’s text in the entry is shaking heavily, which is indicative of pain or a strong emotional state. considering that and the dangerous sounding nature of the experiment he’s describing, it seems likely that whatever followed probably wasnt good - for him or the ones present.

idk, i definitely could be thinking about this way too hard. alternate universes do complicate matters, and i have a tendency to turn thoughts over in my head a million times. but this has been on my mind for awhile and i just had to talk about it!!

Fallen Down and its..idk..mom vibes? the song feels like its worried about you, and almost gives a sense of loneliness, the feeling of having seen someone after so long of no one.

Ghost Fight and the way it feels like youre being stuck in the past, stuggling against a current, holding onto something that makes you happy, but you still feel so sad.

Heartache and its buildup before the explosion of emotion, the feeling of holding back your tears of anger and worry and sadness as you try not to yell at someone, so sure youre in the right and doing whats best for someone you love.

Nyeh Heh Heh! feels like a joke villain in a cartoon, someone who isnt really a villain at all, a sort of doofenshirtz character whos never honestly done anything bad but is, in the momment, an enemy.

Snowy and the feel of exploration, the cold outside battling the warmth in you, the safety you feel even though you could very well be in danger

the way Bonetrousle makes you feel like you have to get up and move, bounce in excitement, so confident and upbeat despite the context.

waterfall and the way the bells sing and echo around the piano, it makes you feel the rain and the heavier thoughts are surrounding you, at this point youre about halfway through your journey and there are some things you cant deny anymore, some choices youre realizing youre gonna have to make, even if no outcome is what you want.

Dummy! and its twist on that same feeling of being stuck in the past, turning it into manical anger instead of sadness

Spear of justice makes you feel like OH FUCK GOTTA RUN OR I GET ASS BEAT, like every momment is running twords you weapon in hand, and you cant stop moving but unlike with bonetrousle now these movements are of fear and not excitement

Metal Crusher sounds robotic and nerdy, and unsure if its meant for Mettaton or Alphys, the way it fits both, almost like a song made for their friendship and how they bounce off of eachother.

Another Medium sounds like molton glass, the feeling of technology advancing as you get to a point where the underground is focused on science and research

CORE is at a point where this tech is at its peak, the synth giving a feeling youre standing at what people that the future would be like in the past

Death by Glamour and its DRAMA and BEAT that makes you, again, feel the need to get up in move, this time in an endless dance, grasping for fame and attention as you move with confidence.

Undertale and i cant fuckifn do this oke bc im crying bc di lisgendf go undsrtale aagain and i cey every fucking tiem

asgore is slow and fast at the same time, an emotion you cant process and dont really want to, sadness seen as anger, youre again so sure youre doing whats best for the ones you love, but this time you KNOW it isnt right, that this js terrible and you feel so, so horrible about it, but its the only way. Youre the villain, and youre forcing youreself to be ok with that. You know you dont get a happy ending. thats fine. you dont think you deserve one.

Your Best Nightmare feels chaotic and jumbled and TOO FAST TOO FAST, like youre not quite thinking clearly and constantly changing youre plans, you didnt think this far ahead and didnt honestly expect to get away with what you did and now youre going mad with the new power.

his theme and fuck crying again. The way it feels like, after so long of holding that past, someones trying to make you let go of it, realising it to the wind. You cant change what happened and you cant fix things, and you have to be ok with that. theres a feeling of anger, of fighting because you KNOW theyre right but you just want things to go back to the way they were, want to just be happy again, want it all fixed.

Battle against a true hero has its momments of pure RAGE and BURNING before turning it into focused anger. Youve accepted your fate, and the one of your friends. It doesnt mean youre ok with it. Youre own, yes. but youve said before you would die for your family and nows youre chance. theres a few seconds where the angers gone and theres only sadness, youre about to die and you know someone you love will see it, but thinking of that loved one fills you with confidence- youre doing everything you can to make sure this doesnt happen to them.

Megalovania has similar feelings, youve accepted your fate, turning your anger, but this time you arent confident. you know this wont change anything, its far too late for that. you arent protecting anyone, the only one past this point will die no matter what. No. youre turning that anger into revenge. its pointless, but it feels good. Youve never cared for justice, that was more someone elses thing. But that someone else is gone, so you guess its up to you.

All boss themes puts you in the shoes of the person youre up against, this songs for them and not you, making it so much easier to empathize.

The other songs put you in frisks shoes, makes you feel small and uncertain, tells you what to think and feel, an unknown hand gently guiding youre path.

i know every dialogue, every neutral ending,... ugh i just wanna spat out every evidence i have. i have a love/hate on sans. im NOT a fangirl, im more of an observer roleplayer. i do NOT support any sans x ships, but that doesnt mean i am against them. if you strongly hate that ship when im on the MIDDLE on that ship (meaning i dont mind the ship yet you’re still yelling at me to stick to one side), please know I SEE ALL OTPS AS FRIENDSHIPS. i do not like romanticized nor sexual types of ships. his mood levels is very interesting. under the mask, he can feel many other emotions than what he expresses to us. im not saying he’s an empath (though that would be rlly cool yet stressful), but slacking off too much comes from too much bs happening around him, including the timelines. he fights back when necessary. he gets offended easily (unless he knows the memes).

too happy = hyper, OOC, many exclamation points, excited, kinda reaches the peak of underswap

happy = warm attitude, thankful, calm, peaceful,

neutral = in-game functions (papyrus did say “THATS JUST HOW HE FUNCTIONS” in a phone call at snowdin, he has lazy habits caused by the code of the game)

my username is not sans worthy but i can tell you im a good sans roleplayer. heck, i even have my own sans who self-disciplines me, or i roleplay him myself irl. its harmless, cause he isn’t real. i affect his character more than his influence and traits affect me. i completely ruined him into a better person, he’s very happy now and got along more with his friends. i even made papyrus not yell at him anymore. i made these monsters have... a happy life.

how did undertale handle death badly

Not to get vague up in here but as i’ve seen people randomly get haughty about me wrt death in Undertale I wanna say that this is a problem a lot of media exhibits and im less dragging undertale and moreso just find this like... SUPER interesting on how it’s handled, especially since I dissect funeral customs and death in video games, especially Undertale, as a trained hospice student.

Western culture’s dealing with Death is something capitalist, dangerous, and not at all how it used to be. From the Aanspreker to Victorian Mourning Dolls, the way we handle death in today’s White, Western culture is something built out of fear, Civil War introduction of Embalming and preservation of dead bodies, and how our culture changed from open expression of grief and mourning to telling kids ‘’grandma is just going to sleep’’ and causing people to pay money they dont need to on a casket they dont need all because grief is seen as something to be used for monetary gain --- the way death is handled in our current state is bad, and regressive, to say the least, so i’m coming from a place here of wanting the conversation on death to open up.

My main focus here is to Alphys’ death in the MTT neutral run for a second, and how her death is kept vague and slight for absolutely no reason but to guilt the player for killing? And how nobody is willing to talk of it, and the only instance you get of it being acknowledged out of it is to just further it’s intended use; to make you feel bad. Undyne being sickened by your actions but too weak to carry on is to make you feel bad. Papyrus’ ‘’childish’’ blindness to what had happened being made to guilt you. And I feel that’s very.... bad, the use of character suicide as something hush-hush ie

Undertale sort of struggles in the Neutral (and No Mercy?) run sometimes because it’s obvious True Pacifist got all the tie-in lore and development, and whatever happens in Neutral runs is just detached instances that may have like, a second bit of acknowledgement before it’s just thrown off the ledge never to be spoken about again, so any sort of death was doomed to be disjointed like this.

But it’s just... so fucking weird. Alphys doesn’t ‘’disappear’’ when you kill Asgore, just regresses into a deeper depression. I have no idea what happens if you kill only Undyne however so if Alphys ‘’disappears’’ in that neutral run also i’ll have an entirely different bone to pick at over dinner, but of all things her dying in the MTT neutral run feels... pointlessly written.

And that fascinates me! Death of such a good character just to make you feel bad for your actions, an indirect cause of something you did, it’s so poor when something like that could’ve been more fleshed out and interesting, or even a look at how the Underground mourns, and we DID get a bit of that with Undyne, but it’s all disjointed and poor.

Undertale had something really going for it with Chara and Asriel’s death had such a major hand in the plot, and it really could’ve said something about it! But in the end it’s held all the same; it’s quiet, it’s in the back of everybody’s mind to make them hurt. Everybody is grieving in unhealthy ways and all of that is simply washed away when someone comes in and saves them.

Death in Undertale is either something that happens that you get punished for, or something that happens to make you feel bad for what you’ve done. There’s no room for characters to truly be put to rest, they’re just hacked off like dead branches. Where is the mourning, how did Undyne find out, why is the Lab blocked off now and has the King been told of her death yet? We could’ve gotten this in the aftercalls, any sort of telling of how people are handling it, but it’s barely mentioned besides from I think sans? It’s just... it happens, it’s locked away, and we’re forced to reckon with it like a character didn’t just indirectly end their life for reasons we don’t even know besides ‘’We did something bad”.

I think Undertale could’ve said something interesting about death and grieving, about what we do in the wake of loss, but instead we got punchline Asgore jokes and random character suicide that means nothing once you go into the elevator --- but we were so CLOSE to getting something more, from HOME’s theme being an obvious metaphor for how Toriel is grieving and dealing with life post-death re the poor pacing of the notes and missing of the chords strung too hard or too soft.

There was the attempt at saying anything about Death, and it should’ve if it was going to base itself around the ‘’no need to kill’’ idea, but it left us with some random shattered glass on the ground and fragments of a conversation that could’ve made this game so much more.
