Am bored so I calculated my life expectancy
40 to 58 (life expectancy for autistic people) taking the average. = 49 expectancy of a man is 4 less years than a woman (being a trans man doesnt affect these numbers) = -4 - 8 to 20 (gay and bi men are likely to die 8 to 20 years earlier) taking the average = -6 + mental illness (increased risk of suicide and less self preservation)
49 - (6 + 4) = 49 - 10 = 39

Leverage Redemption Log: The Pyramid Job
Well either we're going to Egypt (not in the budget) the louvre (not in the budget) or a Bass Pro Shop (in the budget, unlikely). That or its an MLM. --- Woman is telling her MLM bosses about how she needs to leave the MLM. They tell her success is definitly on the way.
Huh an MLM that has a return policy. (i mean its definitely a shit policy that scams them but thats better then most MLM's)
And they reverse psychology the woman back into the pyramidcult. --- Scene opens with a person in an old london flat-cap getting thrown into a container of hay by Elliot. (this guy is so london that i'd be suprised if this doesnt somehow tie into the "Sophie Backstory" that is being slowly woven into the season-arc.)
Pick London Tweeds pocket full of diamonds, fund a school, pay off debts. Denouement for an off-screen adventure.
Huh, im right. Its just not the same guy but this "Billie the Gent" fellow is also wearing a flatcap (and this guy is even wearing something tweed-like) So i assume this scene is taking place in a London warehouse (the beautiful thing about warehouses, they're pretty standard regardless of geographical location. No need for expensive on-location shots)
Billy is worried about his daughter (she was a baby when Sophie sent him and Arthur to prison)
Elliot dated someone who bought the product.
Billie is doing a bit of a guilt trip, and Elliot doesnt trust him. So expect a third-act betrayal of some sort. --- Con starts in-medias-res. Breanna is an accountant. She does not like how much firewalls they've put around comic sans slideshows of babies.
The point of the Con (at least for now): Get a virus on the server. Automated "return true" to all attempts at a refund.
I dont think that the people working at the datacenters of an MLM are usually in the "level"-based structure. So we need a Diamond key... well if they're all on the funky little wristwatch-drives like Saphire here has? Thats a simple Parker Pickpocket. (seems that she's thinking along the same lines).
Also daily, streams from the boss bitch? Thats gonna make a return, and knowing the standard Leverage MO: That is gonna be her Confession Cam
Sophies scheme for Richard: Divide and conquer by convincing him he needs some more Toxic Masculinity in his life. But like, only a smidgen. So its a Harry job, not an Elliot.
--- Sophie arrives at the cult-fundraiser thing. (Parker is in situ as waitstaff) Thank god this show is willing to drop the C word. (Cult. Though though the other one might be apropriate as well) Ok so apparently the company just steals downlines whenever they want?
Richard exists stage to let Debra shine. Do some pseudo-inspirational brainwashing. We have found Billies daughter Miranda. Parker offers up the Venezuela Protocol. --- Operation Bromcom is initiated. I do not like the Tom Selleck stache on Harry.
Bromcom makes it into Phase 2 no problem. --- Debra reads through Sophies accent and really puts her on the spot, also she puts the spots on her. Cut for comercial as if Sophie doesnt have an earpiece. --- Ok we're not even bothering with the earpiece, Sophie is just gonna StageCultBS her way out of this.
But yeah Debra is onto Sophie. Which isnt really a problem? (Sophie is only here to keep an eye on Miranda and create an opening for Parker to do her thing. Being in the spotlight is kind of the point) --- Back with Breanna, Saphire very much is starting to see the dawning light Re:Pyramids. It's far from noon yet but its definitly twilight.
Ronald has a real "they've got skulls on them" moment when he sees the Teletubbies sunbaby on a giant pyramid in the logo. --- Sophie has Parker feign a pregnancy. (she named the kid after Hardison)
And we've just (temporarily) screwed over Miranda. (look there are no stakes here)
Seriously how many glass pyramids are on this table Miranda is standing at?
"I dont have a tissue but you can use my sleeve". 10/10. Well looks like Parker has succesfully convinced Miranda to leave. --- Meanwhile Billy is talking on the phone with someone in a foreign language. Meanwhile Elliot, not involved in our Con, is keeping tabs on Billy. Turns out Elliot can see a narrative throughline when its in his face and is gonna punch it out of Billy before the concequences of Sophies past come to blow our heroes' faces off. --- Back with Harry, Parker tells him to play the "manly emotional insecurity card". ("If only my dad had been able to tell me he was proud of me when he was still alive") Richard has a safe and Parker is ready to go. (so we're switching Diamond-bracelet targets from Debra to Richard) --- Back with Elliot, Billy is remniscing about old times. (turns out food works just as well as punches)
He doesnt trust Sophie, but also he doesnt have any grudges against her. (he understands that she didnt sell him out, he was going down anyway and he doesnt resent her, unlike Arthur) --- Back at Cultcon, Sophie is being politely interogated by Debra. (Debra sees a kinship/rivalry i think?)
Oh i see. (perhaps a bit late). its a maternity cult, about parenthood. And Sophie was always very maternal basically taking all of 2 episodes before becoming an all-out mom to Parker in the OG run. We're about to drop the "you abandoned your child" revelation aren't we? The narrative throughline of the season isnt the Duke she married, its the current duke/duchess that's gonna be the season finale. --- Back to Breanna and Robert, turns out the cheap bracelets cost 200 USD. Also he wants to play Jazz. Breanna knows where the Yes Virus needs to go (penthouse computer) --- Parker tells Harry to move it like a madagaskan lemur. Gold bars, land title deeds in Uzbek... (close enough to russia that it might have been a something Billy was covering up. Except then a reveal that Elliot knows he wasnt speaking russian cause Elliot speaks Russian.)
Oh god he's working with Billy. Thats our 3rd act complication isnt it? (yes a "sophie had a child" reveal would be a twist but it wouldnt be a complication to the con. But a betrayal by Billy...)
Richard challenges Harry to a duel. (who has spotted the bracelet. its in the mancave.) --- Oh Sophie is doing exposition about Nate, i thought we were gonna get into the Duke. (Or it could be both)
Richard just knocked Harry's earpiece out (quick, tell him its a hearing aid. You've spent too much time around loud cars and payed the price. He'll fall for it!) --- Back from commercial, It seems Harry is going for the lie i came up with (im starting to really get feel these writers)
Parker is compromised with her fake belly, and unfortunately Richard isnt buying the hearing aid story (worth a try) --- Breanna is so pissed that Harry's sword-fighting a viking and she's stuck as an accountant. (Ronald has gone home, grabbed his trumpet, returned to tell Breanna and now he's off again) --- "your brandy is watered down and your cubans are fake" hitting him where it hurts him most.
Harry gets to catch punch out a guy with a sword and catch a thrown axe with his shield. He's really getting into Phase 4. --- Meanwhile back at Sophie, we're she's stalling for time with expositiondumps to Debra. And the clock strikes (i think it was 4?) and Sophie turns the tide from reluctant admisions of past trauma to goading and baiting Debra into a confession. Oh she's calling for security after she just confessed to her actions on her own daily livestream? I do wonder what'll happen when we get back from commercials --- So yeah she was on broadcast (cause of course)
Breanna used Harry as a distraction to put her virus on Richards Wristband (man, if only Debra hadnt insisted on a Nuclear Missile-type 2-key situation she could've stopped all the returns from happening right now)
Harry runs into the Denouement looking like a fool because someone has to explain the logistics of the financial fallout (also he put in a call, the repoman works fast) --- Back at the theatre the Selleck Stache has been glued to a mixer. Parker is keeping the baby, and Harry is keeping the armor (it reeks but its probably expensive)
Richard spilled some beer in the car (which, is anticlimactic as far as "you ruined my car for the mission" jokes go), and Richard is playing jazz outside the theatre. ---
YES I KNEW THAT IT WASNT RUSSIA! It was the Uzbek deed after all! So our next mark is presumably this Ramsey guy. (if he's into runways, he's probably a plane-based smuggler) Final camera pan upwards to a devil-like statue. (not a Gargoyle as it isnt a waterfeature, and its mouthes and orifices are closed so it also isnt a grotesque)

Name: ukitake jushiro (  浮竹 十四郎 ) Name meaning: shrug emoji Age: 1000+ Gender: male Ethnicity: asian Nationality: japanese
What time do they usually get up in the morning?:   jushiro wakes up with the dawn ( unless he’s ill, in which case he allows himself more time to sleep. )
What is their morning routine?:  start the day right with a fine cup of tea, and a light breakfast. once he’s dressed and ready he’s quick to get started on his work-- if he’s lucky, he’ll finish what he needs in enough time to have a carefree evening.
How long does it take them to get ready in the morning?:   not very long at all ! for the most part, jushiro is a practical man-- he does what he needs to do as quickly and properly as he can do it. his hair does that a considerable amount of time to brush, though.
What time to do they usually go to bed?: jushiro is not a night owl. he doesn’t exactly have a set bedtime, but most nights, you can find him asleep by 10 ( if not earlier. )
Do they fall asleep easily? Do they stay asleep easily?: jushiro has a difficult time falling asleep ( especially when he’s sick ) , but once he’s out, he’s out. he has a sort of sleeping sixth sense though-- if you come to him in desperate need, he’ll wake up in an instant. he also wakes up at the same time every day, despite the lack of an alarm. he’s good like that.
What position do they sleep in?:   typically on his right side or his back. he likes to curl up, but sleeping on his back is a sort of learned habit from a thousand years of illness.
What is their handwriting like?: simple, traditional, elegant.
Do they prefer typing things or writing things?:  writing things, absolutely. ukitake has never really managed to get the hang of typing-- typewriters were a struggle he gave up on very quickly, and even as the art evolved, he never quite took it up again. the soul society doesnt really rely on typing anyhow. tl;dr he knows how to do it but at what cost
What form of art (i.e. sculpture, embroidery, painting, etc) do they like?:  ukitake loves to paint, though he has little time for it anymore. he also likes to sing, and he’s got a pretty nice voice for it. writing isnt necessarily a passion of his, but he’s GOOD at it, and writing children’s stories is an absolute joy for him.
Are they an artist themselves? What kind of art do they do?: he doesn’t have a very good sense of aesthetics, but painting still lifes is enjoyable to him. he doesnt consider himself an artist though, given that his profession and illness already take up so much of his time
What are some of their favorite books?:  ukitake loves a great manner of books. old accounts of famous war generals, quiet little light novels, excessively long YA series’. he’ll read just about anything and enjoy it.
What genres of movies do they like?:  he’s not really a movie guy ! soul society doesn’t make ‘em, and he doesn’t spend enough time in twol to sit down and enjoy them/
What music genres do they enjoy?:   min’you. he also enjoys the sound of a shakuhachi. he’s not super familiar with modern music genres, but always did enjoy ballads of any language.
What are some of their favorite musical acts?:   guys its 9 am
Do they prefer their music to sound a certain way?:  calm, mostly, though he enjoys upbeat stuff just as well.
Are they a musician themselves?: nope. he’s dabbled in a few instruments in the past, though-- particularly the shamisen.
Do they enjoy music from certain decades? If so, which decades?:  nothing in particular comes to mind; he doesn’t listen to music all that often.
What are some of their favorite pieces of clothing/outfits in their wardrobe? If not applicable, what do you think would be some of their favorite pieces of clothing/outfits?:   he holds his shihakusho pretty dear, but outside of that, he wears traditional kimonos of a similar style just as well. it’s always been his preferred dress.
How much are they willing to spend on clothes?: he does like to dress classy, but he tries to be practical about it. money is best spent on others, after all.
What colors and patterns are prominent in their wardrobe? What colors and patterns do they wear the most often?: his wardrobe is pretty varied, in terms of colors, but he wears lighter ones for the most part and rarely dons patterns. he’s a simple kind of man, and his clothes generally reflect that.
What kind of clothes do they like?:  nothing too stiff or tight ( especially given his illness; he tends to avoid collars and ties ) . something traditional, simple, and comfortable will do him just fine.
Do they wear makeup? What type do they wear?:  its a little too time-consuming for his tastes, nor does he have any particular need/desire to do so.
Do they wear/do you associate them with clothes from a certain decade? If so, which?: points loudly @ like everything ukitake wears
What font/fonts do you associate with them?: i have this one elvish-based cursive font that feels very ukitake
What colors do you associate with them?:  pastel greens, grays, whites, a bit of red.
What natural elements (geographical features like mountains, animals, seasons, locations, plants, etc.): bamboo forests, koi ponds, quiet but swift streams running through cold mountains. gentle but commanding waterfalls. a sunny day in the middle of winter where the snow gleams so brightly you have to squint.

Proximity doesn’t benefit just big cities—it’s helping rural communities weather the economic crisis too

Proximity doesn’t benefit just big cities—it’s helping rural communities weather the economic crisis too
Tumblr media
By Michael Powe, Hanna Love More than six months into the COVID-19 pandemic, America’s small businesses are in a prolonged struggle for survival. And like many aspects of the pandemic, this struggle is wrought with geographic disparities. The severity of the small business crisis varies by state, city, town, and even neighborhood, with businesses in areas dependent on leisure and hospitality at an especially heightened risk. Rural communities have been hit particularly hard, as many had staked their economic revival on fostering locally owned small businesses and recreation-based downtowns. The threat to rural America is compounded by relief structures that have largely lagged to reach small businesses in the hardest-hit places. Given this uneven geography of recovery, the National Main Street Center (NMSC) and Brookings’s Bass Center for Transformative Placemaking wanted to take a more granular look at how place impacts small business survival. In March, we had a hunch that in urban commercial corridors, small businesses’ proximity to one another could help them weather the pandemic by providing sufficient market density to draw customers from surrounding neighborhoods, facilitate takeout and delivery services, and use the public realm around them to adapt business operations. But we weren’t sure how this prediction would unfold months into the pandemic, or how it might apply to small businesses in our nation’s less densely populated rural communities and small towns (which are increasingly pandemic hotspots). To answer these questions, we surveyed small business owners in communities across the country, asking them how the physical location of their businesses and the public realm around them impact their ability to withstand the crisis. We found that in urban and rural areas alike, small businesses are leveraging the physical and social benefits of denser commercial districts to more durably survive the pandemic recession.
The value of place, proximity, and density in rural communities
The benefits of urban downtowns are well documented, as density and proximity to people, jobs, and amenities can help fuel population and economic growth. And although NMSC has long touted the similar benefits of revitalizing downtowns in rural communities, the advantages of rural downtowns are not as widely documented. Now, understanding these dynamics is more imperative than ever. The pandemic is putting rural downtowns—many of which are still struggling to recover from the last recession—in an increasingly precarious economic position due to their heavy reliance on retail and restaurants, as well as their limited access to the capital and broadband infrastructure small businesses now need to survive. To understand how rural small businesses are navigating these challenges, NMSC has been conducting small business surveys of their network—about 65% of which is outside of metropolitan areas. In the latest survey, the Bass Center for Transformative Placemaking partnered with NMSC to include a series of questions to investigate whether being part of a rural downtown core can help small business owners mitigate the pandemic’s economic effects. This survey, which was completed in August and had more than 2,000 respondents, revealed some interesting patterns of recovery and resilience based on place. To gauge the relative proximity of businesses to each other and other amenities, we asked small business owners to indicate the type of physical location their storefront is located in: older commercial corridors or Main Streets (71% of respondents), a remote commercial location away from other businesses (8%), ground-floor storefronts in areas with mostly large office buildings (5%), strip malls (3%), ground-floor storefronts in areas with mostly large new residential buildings (2%), or commercial shopping centers with a large parking lot (2%). Separately, we asked how their physical location has impacted business operations before COVID-19, during “stay-at-home” orders (if applicable), and at present. Regardless of location, small business owners reported acute economic hardship, with many drawing on personal savings, retirement accounts, and personal assets to cover their operating costs through the crisis. But when we took a deeper look at place, we found some variation in small business owner experience, indicating the promise of proximity and density in facilitating recovery. In nearly every circumstance, small businesses in older commercial corridors and Main Streets—with proximity to other businesses, resources, and amenities—were more likely to leverage their physical location to withstand the crisis than businesses in other locations. Prior to the pandemic, during stay-at-home orders, and at present, small businesses in commercial corridors and Main Streets more often used their locations to coordinate with other nearby businesses, collaborate with business associations, adapt operations, and attract people visiting other nearby businesses or tourist attractions. While our survey provides only a glimpse into small business owner experiences, it suggests that by virtue of proximity to each other and connectivity to businesses associations, businesses in denser commercial corridors may be more equipped to weather the economic crisis than their more isolated peers. Small businesses near residential buildings and outdoor space reported their own distinct place-based advantages. Businesses in older commercial corridors and Main Streets often leveraged their locations to enable customers to pick up products by bike or on foot, but ground-floor storefronts near large residential buildings had even higher rates on that metric before the pandemic and at present. Another notable finding that did not align with our initial assumptions: Owners of businesses located in strip malls more often indicated that their physical location positively impacted their ability to adapt to a new business model. It may be that the presence of proximate surface parking spaces in strip malls readily allows for outdoor shopping, dining, and curbside pickup in a way that older commercial corridors (which typically have an adjacent public right of way) cannot. The benefits of place and proximity held across urban and rural areas alike. Both urban and rural small businesses in commercial corridors benefited from their denser physical locations to largely the same extent, with small businesses in rural commercial corridors and Main Streets more often leveraging place to attract customers visiting other attractions in the area. Small businesses in urban commercial corridors, meanwhile, more often used place to collaborate and coordinate with business associations, downtown associations, or other place governance entities. These findings suggest that the benefits of proximity and place governance don’t only apply in big cities, and indicate the promise of rural downtowns in facilitating recovery. Data based on author’s analysis of National Main Street Center survey data gathered in late August 2020. Fifty-one percent of completed surveys were from business owners outside metropolitan areas, and 71% of completed surveys were from business owners within the Main Street network. These findings are only a snapshot of small business owners’ experiences, but they indicate a promising conclusion. The physical landscape of communities—the ability to walk from store to store, the proximity of business owners to each other, and the mix of housing, businesses, and amenities within a place—can help small businesses adapt to and withstand the pandemic’s economic effects.
The importance of rural place governance
Physical location is only one aspect of place, and as our findings show, small businesses in downtowns and Main Streets benefit from place governance structures—including neighborhood associations, business improvement districts, and local Main Street programs—that bring benefits, resources, and an organized voice to business owners and residents. Amid COVID-19, these local organizations are taking an outsized role nationwide in bridging access to fragmented and uneven relief. Unsurprisingly, these trends unfolded in our research too: Local Main Street programs, chambers of commerce, small business development centers, and other nongovernmental entities are stepping up to assist small business owners—particularly in rural areas, with 58% of rural respondents receiving support from local Main Street programs and 49% from chambers of commerce. The effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on rural small businesses will continue to evolve in the months to come. But our research so far indicates that even in a time of unprecedented social distancing, the physical connectivity of our places—and the people and small businesses within them—are helping small businesses more durably withstand the crisis. As we look toward promoting a more even economic recovery for rural communities, it is imperative that we invest in the physical, social, and civic structures that have kept them afloat so far and will be essential to their long-term resilience.

Realism Doesn’t Need to Be ‘Reclaimed’
New Post has been published on http://www.therightnewsnetwork.com/realism-doesnt-need-to-be-reclaimed/
Realism Doesn’t Need to Be ‘Reclaimed’
Ted Bromund, Michael Auslin, and Colin Dueck want to “reclaim American realism,” and spell out what they mean by that in a new article for American Affairs. The idea that realism needs to be “reclaimed” is the first sign that the foreign policy they have in mind has little in common with the one most realists want:
A new foreign policy can be built by recovering a traditional realist approach that held for much of the Cold War era and which was shared by both parties. Doing so will reclaim American realism from those on the right who have made it the handmaiden of neo-isolationism [bold mine-DL], while ensuring that it avoids the overreach that since 2003 has undermined support for America’s role abroad.
The authors’ framing of the problem suggests that they think there has been too much of a reaction against the foreign policy errors of the last sixteen years, but they are not quite willing to identify their preferred policies with the ones that led to those errors. Their reference to “Barack Obama’s retreats” is a giveaway that they are going to argue for a generally very aggressive set of policies–at least more aggressive than those of the Obama era–and then call it realism. I suspect most realists won’t buy it, but the bigger problem is that it abuses the name of realism and tries to use that name to smuggle something else into the debate. The result will be something that Republican hawks and hard-liners will have little to complain about precisely because it has so little to do with realism as understood by Posen, Walt, et al.
The would-be reclaimers aren’t very worried about needing to learn the lessons of the Iraq war. As far as they’re concerned, there has already been too much worrying about this:
Just as importantly, we recognize that we cannot live by postmortem. An obsessive focus on the past—above all, on the Iraq war—risks paralyzing us today.
The implication here is that taking the Iraq war as a cautionary tale about the dangers of overreach and unnecessary intervention runs the risk of preventing tomorrow’s unnecessary intervention, and so that must be avoided. Because they don’t want an “obsessive focus” on the past, the authors don’t address the problems of the overreach they say they want to avoid. Doing that would require revisiting and criticizing Bush-era policy errors.
The authors dismiss the charge of “free-riding” against allies:
But the problem is not that our allies are free riding on us, for when we cut our defenses, they do not increase theirs. It is that the history, culture, and politics of our allies now make them unwilling to accept that military strength is vital to diplomacy and deterrence alike.
Since the U.S. rarely reduces military spending and spends as much as the next seven countries combined, we don’t know that our allies wouldn’t increase theirs to pick up the slack if we made substantial reductions. As soon as there are even slight reductions in military spending, we hear overwrought warnings that the military is being gutted. The U.S. almost never decreases military spending by a large enough amount for long enough to see how our allies would react, and there are always hawks insisting that the military budget be even larger than it already is. The authors say that the U.S. “cannot sustain our alliances unless the American people believe that every member nation is making a fair contribution,” but then proceed to make excuses for why that contribution will never be forthcoming. Many realists have usually argued just the opposite: wealthy allies have the means to provide for more of their own defense, and the U.S. shouldn’t continually bail them out and help them avoid the political debates at home that they need to have.
They take the enviable geographical position of the U.S. as a reason to be entangled in alliances overseas:
Given our good fortune, and our strength, it is inevitable that we are the ones who are forward deployed, because we are the ones who have the geopolitical freedom to help.
But this is not inevitable. It is because we are remarkably secure on account of our location that we do not need to be “forward deployed” and that is why so many of our alliance commitments are unnecessary. Seventy-two years after the end of WWII, the U.S. continues to treat wealthy European and Asian allies as dependents that cannot fend for themselves, and many of them have been content to remain so as long as we keep assuming the costs and risks of protecting them. If these allies aren’t ready to assume more of that burden for themselves now, they never will be, and that arrangement is becoming increasingly untenable.
The authors also seem to have little interest in diplomatic engagement with rivals, which is a very odd trait for supposed realists:
Starry-eyed “resets” or “open hands” towards aggressive, repressive regimes only confuse those who wish to rally beneath a flag of freedom and liberalism. Trying to win over the whole world risks losing those already on our side.
Put another way, they think making efforts to improve relations with these states is a waste of time and shouldn’t be attempted at all. The goal of engagement isn’t to “win over the whole world,” but to secure cooperation on specific issues in the American interest. Even if such engagement delivers tangible results in terms of cooperation or the resolution of a longstanding dispute, the authors would rather that the U.S. keeps its distance for fear of “losing” states currently aligned with us. The odd thing about this is that engagement with Iran didn’t “confuse” our allies in Europe, and it didn’t cause any of them to move away from us. It pleased them, and some of them were directly involved in the negotiations that produced the nuclear deal. The only states put off by the nuclear deal were regional clients, most of which have absolutely nothing to do with a “flag of freedom and liberalism.”
The authors are arguing that we have to defend front-line states because they are threatened by rivals, but on no account should we try to reduce tensions with rivals through engagement. That seems like a recipe for needless confrontation that increases the danger to “those already on our side” and risks pulling us into a larger conflict. Once again, this is not the realism you are looking for.
The authors then take refuge behind the hoariest of hawkish cliches:
It is our weakness, not our strength, that is provocative, because American weakness makes our allies fearful and encourages our competitors to take chances.
There are never any examples provided to prove the “weakness is provocative” thesis. It may occasionally be true, but it is more likely that adversaries find our aggressive actions to be far more provocative, and these are the actions that prompt more aggressive behavior from them in turn. The belief that “weakness is provocative” takes for granted that adversaries perceive weakness from us if our government doesn’t respond forcefully in every dispute. That ignores our adversaries’ own understanding of their interests, and explains their behavior primarily in terms of taking advantage of our supposed weakness. Meanwhile, our allies and clients tend to become more reckless and irresponsible when they think they have U.S. backing. Believing that “weakness is provocative” is frequently misleading, and it means that policymakers that accept it as true will err on the side of being too aggressive.
The authors seem to reject pursuing regime change, but leave a caveat large enough to launch an invasion through:
Our method should not be imposed regime change, except in cases of vital national need…
The trouble is that advocates for regime change always insist that overthrowing this or that regime is vitally important for U.S. security. They are always wrong, but they always make this claim. The authors don’t offer specific examples of when they think regime change was/is necessary and when it wasn’t/isn’t, so we are left wondering what they think “vital national need” means. It shouldn’t be difficult for ostensible realists to say that they are opposed in principle to starting wars to overthrow foreign governments, but they don’t say that here.
Later on, they make clear that they think the U.S. should be willing to risk war to defend states, even non-allied ones, that are in conflict with the world’s two major authoritarian powers:
Second, the United States must support sovereign nations that are resisting attempted subjugation by outside pressure, if that pressure is exerted by a nation that has the strength to alter the global balance of power. This means that we must oppose actions such as Russia’s assaults in Ukraine and the Caucasus, and China’s expansionism in the South China Sea.
We cannot rule out the use of military force in cases such as this: if we do, other powers will simply escalate in any crisis until we quit.
Risking a major war over Ukraine or Georgia makes no sense for U.S. security, and no responsible president would do that. Risking war over territorial disputes in the South China Sea is similarly unwise. These are exactly the kinds of crises that could be avoided or contained through greater engagement, but the authors have already dismissed that as “starry-eyed” nonsense. Courting great power conflict in this way seems like the exact opposite of what a realist foreign policy would do.
They think imposing punitive sanctions is worth doing even when they don’t change the targeted government’s behavior:
It is therefore not right to criticize responses—such as the sanctions that the United States imposed on Russia after its invasion of Ukraine—by arguing that they did not resolve the crisis, for the point of such responses is not to resolve the crisis: it is to open another front in the wider competition, and to do so in ways that impose long-term costs on our opponent.
In other words, punitive sanctions are often useless, but we should use them anyway. Even though imposing them almost certainly makes resolving the crisis harder and worsens relations with the targeted government, they should be imposed simply for the sake of imposing costs. I can’t think of many realists that would agree with this approach.
The authors make another curious claim:
The danger rests not so much in any particular crisis, but in the rise of the belief among the powerful that the world is there for taking.
The idea here is that the U.S. doesn’t have to have anything at stake in a particular crisis, but it has to oppose other great powers in each instance anyway. The problem with this is that it sets the U.S. up to fail in the competition with these powers in crises where our interests are few or non-existent and theirs are much greater. If we insist on trying to check them at every turn (and then inevitably backing down because we have nothing at stake in most cases), it makes it more dangerous and difficult to check them when it might really matter.
One frustrating aspect of the article is that it addresses so few contemporary issues. There are a few references to conflicts involving Russia and China, and a passing swipe at the nuclear with Iran, but for the most part it isn’t clear how the authors’ “reclaimed realism” would differ in practice from the preferred policies of hard-liners in Washington. But then I suppose that’s the point. “Reclaiming” realism means dubbing hard-line policies as realist and throwing most actual realist arguments out the window.
