Click. A bright flash of light lit the dark room for a moment. She frowned. Click. Light appeared for another brief moment. She forced her eyes to open.
It was morning. The sun tried desperately to shine through their bedroom window, but the curtains denied its entry. Where was the light coming from?
“Smile!”
Before she even had time to oblige, a final flash went off.
Velox’s eyes fluttered open. She was met with Prompto, who sat on the ground at the side of the bed with his legs crossed.
“C'mon Prom, it’s too early for this,” Velox slurred groggily.
“It’s never too early for a photo op!” he said perkily, bringing the camera to his face.
The blonde put her hand in front of the lens. “Wait. Lemme see what you’ve got so far.”
Prompto handed the camera to his sister.
Velox shifted to rest on her elbow. She took the camera and held it so that they could both see the screen. She hit a button with an arrow on it and scrolled through the pictures her brother had taken. In the first photo of the morning, she was slumbering peacefully. In the second photo, her eyebrows were scrunched together, giving her an annoyed expression. In the last photo, the blonde looked dazed and confused.
“See! Real keepers!” her twin beamed, “Candids are the best.”
Velox chuckled, “Next time, can-don’t. The lighting’s not even good.”
“I didn’t wanna wake you!” he argued.
“Don’t sacrifice good lighting for my sake.”
“Alright, alright. A lighting fix is a can-do.” Prompto stood up and scurried comically to the window.
She smiled and shook her head. Velox ran her fingers through her short hair, which resembled a bird’s nest in the early morning.
“Let there be light!” he shouted, drawing the curtains.
She hurriedly raised the camera and pointed it at the blond. Click.
“See?” Velox said, turning the camera so that her brother could see the photo, “Good lighting works wonders.”
Prompto’s arms were dramatically raised above his head, as if he had just won a gold medal in a competition. Sunlight poured through the window and swallowed him whole. His body appeared to be glowing.
“Woah! I look like a god!” he said, staring at the photo in total awe and admiration.
Velox gazed at her brother and grinned. This is exactly how everyone sees you, sunshine.
•••
“Just calm down, bro. We’ll be fine,” Velox said, trying to soothe her nervous twin.
“B- But what if I mess up? What if I say something stupid and embarrass myself?” Prompto’s mind was racing with every terrible scenario imaginable.
She placed a hand on her brother’s shoulder and gave a reassuring look. “I’ll be right by your side.”
His worried expression melted away and morphed into one of confidence. “Yeah.”
“Are you ready?” Cor asked.
The twins nodded.
He brought his hand to a large door with intricate patterns and knocked.
A voice from within answered. “Come in.”
Cor opened the door and entered the room. “Pardon the intrusion.”
“Cor?” it asked.
He motioned for them to join him. Prompto gulped and looked to his sister for comfort. She smiled and winked at him. Velox placed her hand on his back and guided him forward. The twins walked into the room and stepped out from behind Cor.
“And pardon us,” Prompto began. His eyes fell on the figure standing beside the owner of the voice. “Wait, Gladio!?”
“What’re you doin’ here, guys?” Gladio asked, looking slightly puzzled.
“They’re here for their Crownsguard uniforms, so I thought it best they met the captain themselves,” Cor clarified.
“Makes sense.”
Clarus studied their faces for a brief moment. “Prompto Argentum, am I right? And his sister, Velox Argentum?”
The twins answered in unison, “Y-yes, sir!”
“It’s a pleasure to meet you both,” Clarus smiled, “No injuries from training, I presume?”
Prompto shook his head furiously. “No, sir! It went just fine, I think. Probably.”
“We are ready to protect Noct at any cost,” elucidated Velox.
Her brother nodded in agreement.
“Very noble of you both. However, you must first and foremost protect yourself on this journey—hence your self-defense training,” Clarus advised.
“R-right.”
“I understand you both decided to undertake this journey as his friend. Take pride in your position at his side,” He added.
“Right!” Prompto started, “And, uh-”
“Thank you,” Velox finished.
“I appreciate your time today. I assume you have some preparations to take care of, so you may be on your way,” Clarus concluded.
“Yes, sir!” the twins said in unison.
“I better get ready, too,” said Gladio.
Clarus glanced at his son, “Understood. I’ll see you soon.”
Prompto spun around and hurriedly left the room. Gladio and Velox followed close behind.
“That went well,” Velox stated.
“Yeah,” Prompto sighed in relief, “It did, didn’t it?”
“You gonna wait for Noct here?” Gladio asked.
Velox shook her head. “We’ll probably head home for a bit.”
“Why? Forget something?”
“No, nothin’ like that!“ her brother said, “Just thought we’d show our parents our new digs.”
The Shield laughed, “Heh, sounds good.”
“It’s kinda proof that we’re worthy to go on this trip, y'know?” Prompto continued.
Velox’s curled lips faltered. “Let’s just hope they’re actually home.”
“Not much you can do if they aren’t, huh.”
“We barely ever see ‘em. Been that way since we were kids,” she shrugged.
“Anyway, if they’re not in, we’ll come right on back!”
“Right. Well, I might be a little late,” Gladio informed, “Got dinner plans.”
“Do tell.”
“My family and I are going out to eat. Hardly ever happens, so I figured I might as well go along,” he explained.
“Sounds like fun! Enjoy, man,” Velox nodded.
“Take your time, and send Iris our regards,” Prompto added.
“Oh, yeah,” Gladio said, tapping his chin, “She mentioned she saw you guys the other day.”
The blond shot him a confused look. “Huh? Where?”
“In the park, taking pictures.”
“Sounds about right. Why didn’t she come over and say ‘hi’ if she saw us?”
“She did,” Gladio and Velox answered at the same time.
“H-hold up. Seriously?” Prompto looked between the two, shocked, “Oh man, I can’t believe I didn’t notice.”
Velox playfully hit her brother’s shoulder and snickered. “Who’d you think I was talking to?”
“I- I don’t know!” he said, flustered, “I thought you were just chatting up some girl you thought was cute!”
Gladio and Velox looked at each other for a moment and then broke into a fit of hearty laughter.
“She was really worried about you,” The Shield said jokingly.
“She really was,” Velox suppressed her giggles and wiped her tears away.
“You should’ve told her not to worry!”
