I'm really not a villain enjoyer. I love anti-heroes and anti-villains. But I can't see fictional evil separate from real evil. As in not that enjoying dark fiction means you condone it, but that all fiction holds up some kind of mirror to the world as it is. Killing innocent people doesn't make you an iconic lesbian girlboss it just makes you part of the mundane and stultifying black rot of the universe.

"But characters struggling with honour and goodness and the egoism of being good are so boring." Cool well some of us actually struggle with that stuff on the daily because being a good person is complicated and harder than being an edgelord.

Sure you can use fiction to explore the darkness of human nature and learn empathy, but the world doesn't actually suffer from a deficit of empathy for powerful and privileged people who do heinous stuff. You could literally kill a thousand babies in broad daylight and they'll find a way to blame your childhood trauma for it as long as you're white, cisgender, abled and attractive, and you'll be their poor little meow meow by the end of the week. Don't act like you're advocating for Quasimodo when you're just making Elon Musk hot, smart and gay.

My best friend and I moved in together with his closest friend from his MA program, and while I had met her before (the friend; my bff is a man), we hadn't spent much time together because I've never lived away from the West Coast (and only two years out of the PNW) and she's never lived outside of North Carolina and only briefly visited the PNW once, when she went to Portland last year.

It's been a delight to show her around the PNW and realize we need to explain things that are just sort of omnipresent in our lives. The bff and I were casually griping with each other about having to run an errand to Trader Joe's at an inconvenient hour, and were telling her, "it's okay, you can stay in the car and avoid the people if you want" and she was like "NO I MUST SEE IT, I'VE ONLY HEARD OF THEM" and nearly ascended to another plane when we showed her around the store.

The bff and I grew up in the same town in NW Washington (him for his first 18 years, me from 9 to 19) and he lived in Bellingham and Seattle for years before he went to NC for grad school (I went to the SF Bay Area for mine, a very different experience). Both of them are hardcore coffee aficionados, but he struggled with the different Coffee Ways of the South, so for the true PNW experience they want to tour various indie coffeeshops next.

Also, she adores Kaidan in Mass Effect and we were like, oh, is your passport up to date? We could take a trip sometime and show you your boyfriend's beloved English Bay. It's very beautiful :)

reminder to newcomers that if your blog has no posts, no profile picture, no header, and your blog colors aren't changed, i and most other people will take that as you being a bot and will block and report you as spam if you follow us. go to your profile and click the little paint pallette and give your blog a makeover real quick or if that's too much just change your blog title to something like "not a bot". i really recommend the makeover though because that's much more fun even if you don't want to reblog and you're just here to lurk.

#and if newcomers see this: we had a huge bot influx in december-ish where a lot of us were having up to a dozen bots following us in a day #it took ages for it to settle down but for me theres only one or two a day now #and because ive seen people arguing for leaving their bot followers: follower count doesnt matter in the slightest on tumblr #no one can see the numbers and it doesnt boost your posts. all leaving the bots does is possibly let them spam your posts #with malicious links. they do nothing and thats why we block and report them and when you leave your blog completely empty #that just makes you indistinguishable from a bot when you follow someone and your blog may eventually be deleted if its reported enough.#im saying all this because i think im ending up blocking quite a few humans lately and i dont want to block real people #come join the party but theres just one rule: you HAVE to show signs of humanity. even if its just a simple ''not a bot'' in your bio.

My stress dreams almost always involve zombies but last night was a new and horrifying twist. Awake, I see connections to the Reavers from Firefly, but in-dream it was a dreadful and brand new reveal.

The thing about writing gay books is that there are people out there who will go around 1-starring every gay book they see. And so when your gay book about sapphics with swords battling a diabolical warship AI becomes more visible, as it's featured in upcoming release lists, you have to just... take the hit. Grin through it. You see That Guy and see all the other books he's 1-starred and You Know Why.

This has happened every time, all the way back to my very first book. Now it's happened to my seventh. I know these things even out in the end, that one rating is one voice in a chorus, that ultimately what matters is that the book IS visible and the people who'll love it will find it.

But, man. It got under my skin the first time. It got under my skin today. I'll never not have to take hits from That Guy.

#my bio on here says I'm 20 lmao I'm almost 25. wow #keeping this blog only as an archive for myself but I'm a different person now #happier. not HAPPY. but doing better than i could have imagined when i was 20 #full time job as a behavioral health case manager I'm on HRT I've started EMDR actively coming up with a plan to move to a bigger city #in a bluer state. just have some things i need to get together first #I'm not just rotting away dissociating wishing my life was better but not doing anything about it #i mean i still do dissociate. i still find it hard to take action but I'm kind of getting better at larping a real human #and also just....not giving a fuck about stupid worries
