Mystery Solved: DOT Finds Madison Lyden’s ‘Ghost’ Bike — In Its Own Warehouse!
It only took 10 days, but the city finally solved the case of Madison Lyden’s missing memorial bike — and city officials promise to do the right thing and return it to its rightful place at the scene of her death.
The iconic white ghost bike was installed on Central Park West in September to honor the crash victim, but it was removed by the city the weekend before Thanksgiving, as preparations began for the annual Macy’s parade.
Unsurprisingly, then, the memorial’s disappearance caused an uproar. The death of the 23-year-old Australian tourist in August was a major news event — warranting a crime scene visit by Mayor de Blasio and spurring calls for a protected bike lane on the corridor. The mayor has done nothing since, so the removal of the memorial shrine to Lyden felt like a yet another slap in the face to not only Lyden’s memory, but to the thousands of pedestrians and cyclists who are injured by cars every year in this city who don’t get remembered or protected.
Nine days of radio silence from the local police precinct and other city agencies only added to the outrage.
the memorial for Madison Jane Lyden on Central Park West has disappeared. #bikenyc @StreetsblogNYC pic.twitter.com/jQS4rBRilI
— Keith Williams (@wmskeith) November 20, 2018
On Tuesday, DOT officials finally located the bike — after entreaties from local advocates, Streetsblog and Council Member Helen Rosenthal. The bike had been removed ahead of last week’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and put in a warehouse on Manhattan’s East Side, agency spokesperson Chris Browne said.
The bike will be made available to activists, who can return it to its original location on Central Park West across the from 66th Street, Browne added.
Going forward, it’s not entirely clear whether the city has a good plan for ghost bikes that don’t have the support of persistent advocates. The Lyden memorial appears to have been removed and relocated in accordance with the city’s typical practice for derelict and illegally parked bikes, according to Transportation Alternatives Manhattan organizer Chelsea Yamada, who helped lead the search.
“Other ghost bikes around the city don’t have this much high-profile attention,” Yamada said. “Next year, when this happens, who’s going to be there to remember to save the bike?”
Sanitation crews know not to remove “ghost” bikes, but the memorials must be maintained by whoever installed them. Advocates from TransAlt and the NYC Ghost Bike Project are working on a plan to ensure the bike doesn’t do missing for next year’s parade.
“Next Thanksgiving, it’s the same thing,” said Rosenthal spokesperson Sarah Crean. “It has to be taken off or taken away.”

Inside The Water Tower Bar, A Speakeasy Atop the Williamsburg Hotel
Photo by Ethan Covey courtesy The Water Tower/Williamsburg Hotel
If you missed the watertower speakeasy from back in 2013, you can now experience The Water Tower, a bar atop the Williamsburg Hotel designed in homage to New York City’s iconic water towers. Newly opened over the weekend, the lounge and nightclub sits perched above the rooftop pool accessible via a winding steel staircase. A balcony wraps around the main steel “water tower” structure which is cut-out with large panes of glass to offer 360 degree views of Manhattan and Brooklyn.

The interior decor features a reclaimed wooden floor, tufted velvet and leather couches, banquettes, and chairs, a marble bar, and an eclectic selection of gold, mirrored and wooden cocktail tables. A wall of vintage-style pop art by a local artist features slogans like “I improve with Wine!”, a quote about New York from the Frank Sinatra song New York, New York (“If you can make it here, I’llmake it anywhere,” a quote from writer Jay McInerney in New York Magazine, “All that can be said with certainty is, ‘The best place in New York is the night, the worst place in New York is the morning.”

Mixologist, Rael Petit who was at the helm of The Standard Hotel before, created the cocktail menu which includes concoctions like Heart of Gold (Patron Gran Platinum, Cocchi Americano, white truffle-infused aperol), Message in a Bottle (Bacardi 4yr, clarified milk, Chinese cinnamon cordial, blue majik pineapple juice, lemon), Purple Rain (Empress Gin, Cocchi Americano, Pear Williams, Plant People CBD oil) and Les Gnomes (Absolut Elyx, Singani 63, Ancho Reyes, ginger syrup, lemon juice). Small bites are also available, with a menu by Executive Chef Nic Caicedo that includes a Seafood Plateau of local seafood, a White Truffle Grilled Cheeze, and Caviar Tastings.
The Water Tower is open Wednesday to Saturday from 10 AM to 4 AM.

Doctors Hospital Gets Second Grant for Cancer Awareness
Doctors Community Hospital is revamping their cancer awareness for Prince George’s County residents, particularly focusing on breast and colorectal cancers. (Courtesy Photo)
By Mark F. Gray
Doctors Community Hospital is revamping its cancer awareness program for residents of Prince George’s County. The hospital is merging its breast and colorectal education programs as part of a $3.5 million grant from the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.
This modification to a previously existing program will focus on health education and literacy with an emphasis on breast and colorectal cancers. It will remain available free of charge to uninsured and underinsured members of the community.
“Cancer is among the top causes of death in Prince George’s County,” said Robin Webb-Williams, vice president at Doctors Community Hospital Foundation in a statement issued by the hospital. “That’s why providing free cancer screenings is so important, especially in areas that don’t have convenient access to care. This grant will help us reach more people who can truly benefit from these community health resources at no cost to them.”
This is the second time Doctors Community Hospital has been awarded the grant. As a result of this program, approximately 244 people were screened for colon cancer through the Cancer Prevention, Education, Screening and Treatment (CPEST) Program. CPEST provides free colorectal cancer screenings (colonoscopies) to Prince George’s County residents with low incomes and are facing gaps in coverage that may not allow for them to receive adequate care.
The mission of the free program is to educate all residents about the importance of early cancer detection and what steps should be followed if someone is diagnosed with the disease. Most cancers, if detected early, are no longer the death sentence that many perceive. Routine cancer screenings are at the front of what the Doctors Hospital is trying to focus on communicating to the residents who take advantage of the program.
“People are now more aware of how they can prevent and how to deal with cancer than they were in the past,” Webb-Williams told the AFRO. “Now we are dealing with the ancillary issues such as treatment programs and support guidance to help those who are close to someone who may be affected by various forms of cancer.”
Men and women, between 50 – 75 years old qualify for the program. Those 50 and younger who have family histories of colorectal cancer are eligible as well. In 2018, the hospital performed about 244 free colonoscopies that identified four cases of cancer. The Breast and Cervical Cancer program will service women who are uninsured and underinsured between ages 40-64.
Of the 647 women who were screened for breast cancer, nine breast cancer cases were identified. There were 116 women screened for cervical cancer and there were no cases identified.
“Screenings are among the best ways to detect many types of cancer early and when they are often most treatable,” said Terrie Trimmer, director of the Center for Comprehensive Breast Care and Women’s Wellness at Doctors Community Hospital. “We are proud to be able to provide these life-saving screenings in underserved areas of our wonderfully diverse community.”
It is expected that when the final national cancer results from 2018 are released, more than 500,000 people died of colorectal disease. The last official statistics from Prince George’s County date back to the first year of the initial program in 2014. According to the American Cancer Society and the Prince George’s County Department of Health there were 344 cases of colorectal disease leading to 138 deaths.
This program will also have a nurse navigator who will help diagnosed patients coordinate medical care and identify additional community resources.

Hack for Acrophobics: No More Glass Roads in New York City
The just-released New York City course is beautiful, but we’ve heard from some Zwifters with acrophobia (fear of heights) expressing discomfort in riding the higher glass roads. Because even on a virtual ride, those feelings are real!
Jonathon Levie, resident hacker over at Zwift Hype, has shared a solution. Simply put, his solution has you replace the textures used on the glass roads with an almost completely opaque texture so you aren’t seeing the ground below.
Jonathon told me this about the community’s reaction to this hack:
A ton of people reached out and personally thanked me! I’m surprised at how many people wanted this mod.
Download the files for Jonathon’s mod here: https://drive.google.com/open?id=12SzSSlksoZLLQpnQcsojjwXHiDZTnEGT. The zip file includes instructions which I have also included below. Jonathon also made a video showing how to apply his mod:
Download the mod files here: https://drive.google.com/open?id=12SzSSlksoZLLQpnQcsojjwXHiDZTnEGT.
Locate your Zwift data folder by right clicking your Zwift icon and click > Open File location (for me this is C:>Program Files(x86)>Zwift). If you see a folder labeled ‘data’ you’re in the correct location
Navigate to Zwift > Data > Environment > Road (click the data folder, then ‘Environment’, then ‘Road’) If you’re in the correct location you should see folders labeled ‘Beach’, ‘DirtRoad’, ‘Innsbruck’, ‘NewYorkCentralPark”…
Rename Zwift’s NewYorkCentralPark folder to “RENAMED-NewYorkCentralPark” If you’d like to revert to glass floors, this is your backup 😉
Place the new “NewYorkCentralPark” from the downloaded zip file in the “Zwift> Data> Enviroment> Road” folder.
Done!
If you have any questions or requests, reach out to Jonathon on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/jlevie

Madrid
These churros.
They were unforgettable. They redefined the entire concept of churros in my mind. No more half-stale, cinnamon-encrusted monstrosities from the Costco food court. These were slender, unadorned, and freshly plucked out of the deep fryer for you to dunk into a cup of real hot chocolate. A local specialty savored as a late-night snack, served by a century-old chocolateria in a quaint alley, these churros represent everything I love about travel and food.
Spain was our first overseas foray with Miles, whose fortitude towards monotonous flights and novel time zones continues to impress us. He went everywhere we went, even if that meant midnight dinners in a country where restaurants don't open till 9PM. He was able to nap almost anywhere, in this case between two statues at the Prado museum. (Docents scolded us for taking photos immediately after we snapped this one.)
Happily, our four days in Madrid included Sunday, allowing us to browse antiques among crowds at the Rastro flea market.
Street performers of all kinds were everywhere in Spain. This woman, bedecked in plastic fruit, brought such smiles to our faces that we gladly tipped her for a few pictures.
Elsewhere, two soulful Spaniards attracted a crowd as they duetted.
We worried that with baby in tow, we wouldn't be welcome in many places, particularly restaurants. It turns out that Spaniards adore children, to the point that they often startled us with their affection. They even let us bring Miles into a jazz club, where we listened to guitarist Ali Khattab's jazzy blend of Middle Eastern and flamenco music.
That churros place (est. 1894) might have been old, but not far away is the world's actual oldest restaurant, Sobrino de Botin. Famous for its roast suckling pig, it's been operating since 1725 and is either an absolute tourist trap or an enduring culinary treasure, depending on which Yelp review you consult. (They're split about 50/50.) Well, sometimes a tourist trap is worth visiting when you're, you know—a tourist. And luckily, the roast pig was delicious.

False alarms: A moment of panic yesterday afternoon on 3rd Avenue
Fireworks? Gunfire? Anybody know what that was in the #eastvillage NYC a minute ago?
— Tom Cunniff (@tomcunniff) November 11, 2018
An EVG reader writes in about an incident that occurred yesterday afternoon on Third Avenue shortly before 4.
The reader was on the northwest corner at Ninth Street "when we heard a series of pops, that sounded like gunshots, from a block or two south. We couldn’t see down that way, because of the angle, and because there’s scaffolding up there. People started running north, trying to scatter."
Several people, including the reader, took refuge in a nearby shop, where the employee locked the front door. After a few minutes: "We peeked out, and everything was back to normal, almost immediately. People were walking, and it was like nothing ever happened. After a couple of minutes, we came out.
