The first time I dyed my hair pink was in 2006.

I then had pink hair on and off until 2013, at which point it became a permanent part of my look.

I am saying this to establish that I know how to use semi-permanent hair dye.

This information is going to be relevant in a moment.

A rant:

Let's talk about textiles for a second, since that's the subject of this blog.

How does dying a protein (hair, or silk) fiber work?

Well, the hair is covered with a lot of little sort of scales, called the cuticle. They're basically overlapping scales that cover the main part of the fiber. If you've got hair long enough, grab a strand and run it between your fingers, first from the top of the strand to the bottom, and then from the bottom to the top. Do you feel the difference? That's because the cuticle scales overlap and make one direction of the fiber "down" and one direction "up".

BTW if you ever find old wigcraft books that make a big deal about keeping the hair in the same alignment, but you're adapting their old techniques using natural hair to your own wigs using synthetic hair, you're allowed to ignore that info. Synthetic wig fiber, being monofilament plastic, doesn't have a cuticle. Go make yourself some double-thickness wig wefts by folding the fiber in half and know that you're totally going to be okay.

The cuticle is there to protect the hair fibers, and it does a really good job of that. That's a problem when you're dyeing something. If you've ever spilled red wine onto a wool sweater, you've spilled a heavily pigmented liquid onto a hair fiber. And yet, you can stop it from staining just by applying a room temp or cold liquid (ideally white vinegar) to the spill. Because there wasn't any real process to open up the cuticle, the cuticle was able to protect the center of the hair fiber from the pigment, and the pigment did not set in the hair fiber.

So, if we want to make white wool orange, and we want the pigment to last, we have to get the pigment into the hair fibers. We have to open up the cuticle to allow the pigment to penetrate. With fabric, a dye vat is pretty easy and effective. You get an agent to open up the cuticle (usually something like white vinegar) and then you open it up further with the application of heat. You then add time and pigment, and you get pigment in the wool.

This is tougher with humans because it's not advisable to boil your whole head for 90 minutes, but we'll get back to that.

We will also get back to why my bathroom looks like a scene from a CSI-themed indie film that spent their entire $3 special effects budget at spirit halloween.

You might ask why you use white vinegar to both remove the red wine and to stick the dye into the fiber. The answer is that damn cuticle again. When you're preventing the stain, you're opening the cuticle and then immediately flushing the area with a non-pigmented fluid. In this case, the vinegar is both the opener and the flusher. With the dye vat, you are opening the cuticle with the vinegar and then immediately flooding the area with a highly pigmented liquid. This is why arguments I see like "vinegar is used to set dye so putting it on yoru head will be good" drive me nuts. Context matters. If you ask me how long it's been since I last brushed my teeth and I say "seven, maybe eight" then my answer is useless, and yet still horrifying. Also, you know, dollars versus murders.

There's another component of dye, especially dyeing hair, and that's the carrier. Not all of the dye vat is pigment, and not all of the dye vat is going to be in the wool. Source: you have to dump out the used up dye vat when you're done and so that part definitely didn't stay in the wool. Something has to carry the pigment in the dye vat. Think of the pigment as a small dot and the carrier as another dot holding onto the first dot. The carrier is what allows you to have a vat of dye for wool or a paste of dye for hair and stick it where you want to dye it. But the carrier has another, very important job. It's important for the small dot of pigment that is being carried to want to be IN the fiber more than it wants to be attached to the carrier. If it's more attracted to the carrier than to the hair, when you wash the dyed fabric, the carrier will wash away and take the pigment with it.

And when I say "wash away", right now I mean "wash away, until it binds permanently to my 40-year-old shower floor." In this case, the pigment was more heavily attracted to 80's plastic than it was to the carrier.

See, you'll actually know when an effective carrier was being used, because the carrier liquid will stop being pigmented. A successful wool dye vat will lose its color when the product is dyed. Some brands of sem-perm hair dye--Iro Iro, Manic Panic, Arctic Fox, fuckin' Splat, Special Effects, box dye purchased by my mom in 2008 at Safeway because I didn't know how to drive but NEEDED to have pink hair for Sacanime, Punky, weird dye that was on clearance at Sally Beauty--when they've been sitting on your head for long enough, start to sort of sweat a clear liquid. When this has been attained, you know that you can wash out your hair with relatively minimal mess (for semi-perm dye standards) because the majority of what you will be washing will be carrier that has given up its pigment.

As previously mentioned, boiling your head for an extended time is generally not considered compatible with life. So, how is hair dye on your head different from vat dyeing fabric?

First of all, you have to take a different route to opening your cuticle. Generally, before you put semi-perm dye on your hair, you pre-lighten it with hair bleach. This gets your hair to be a white-ish blank space to put the color on, making it bright. It also serves the very important purpose of opening the cuticle up very effectively. When you bleach and then don't condition, your hair feels like toast. To phrase it differently, it feels rough, like when you rub your fingers up a hair backwards. The cuticle was opened by the bleaching process. (The cuticle has to open for the bleach to work because the bleach needs to get in there and take your natural hair pigment out). This is also why, when you put overtone on your virgin hair at the start of the pandemic, it almost all washed out immediately.

When your cuticle is wide open because holy shit hair does NOT like that, you have to put the pigment on. For convenience's sake, you don't want it to just be a liquid that will run off and get everywhere. You want a cream or a paste that will hold the dye there. For safety's sake, you need a cream that can be applied at a temperature safe to be on your head for an extended period.

Then, it sits on your hair, and the pigment moves from the carrier into your hair. In addition, a good semi-perm hair color will have conditioning agents, which will also go into your wide-open hair and rehydrate it, which will naturally close the cuticle. In a good world, your hair will have the pigment locked away, and the pigment in the carrier will largely be gone, so washing it out is only a little bit more annoying than regular washing your hair.

At least, that is, until my experience today with Strawberry Leopard hair dye.

I know what happened. More pigment than I am used to remained in the carrier, so when I went to wash it out, boy did i have to wash it out.

Clearly, a lot of the pigment ended up in my hair, which was good, but a lot of it definitely did NOT end up in my hair. It ended up in the rinse water. And by that, I mean it ended up in all the things the rinse water touched, since it was still an active dye at the time. I can live with pink shower grout. But holy hell was I scrubbing the shower floor with every melamine sponge and soft scrub cleanser that I could get my hand on and it just looks like an episode of the Forensic Files right before they spray luminol on things.

They say they're "conditioner based" which sounds to my non-professional eye as the problem. Conditioner goes into the hair, yeah? So you want the conditioner and the pigment to both go into the hair, yeah? So you just want the conditioner, which is now the carrier, to hang onto the pigment, so they both get in the hair, yeah? So you just need to rinse for FIFTY MINUTES of ACTIVELY RINSING MY HAIR and then MORE TIME actively SCRUBBING THE SHOWER to get it out, yeah?

Nah.

Anyway, they're a new product, and they're going right on the list of shit I'm never buying ever again. I don't care if this makes my hair as happy and hydrated as virgin hair. It was not worth turning my bathroom into the kind of set dressing you usually accomplish with a can of tomato paste and a $7 special effects budget that you spent entirely at Food Max.

For what it's worth, I also believe the color indicated on the bottle is not the color the dye is going to make my hair, which is really where it matters, IMO.

Bonus verse: how does permanent hair dye (bleach and color applied together) work? Well, when you bleach your hair, it goes through a series of shades. If you've ever sprayed bleach on a cotton or wool shirt, you'll know that it doesn't immediately get white. It goes from brown, to red, to light brown, to orange, to yellow, to blonde, then to inner lemon rind/white. What you have to do for permanent dye is to lighten the hair to the most adjacent color, and then tone the hair to the right shade. If you have dark brown hair and you want light brown hair with an ashy undertone, you can lighten it to orange and then stick a lot of purple toner on it, and the color wheel says that's ashy light brown so let's roll with that. Generally, because the toning pigments aren't as concentrated as bright clown colors are, they can be mixed in with the bleach and applied in one go. If you mix bright fun colors with bleach, the bleach acts on the pigments in the bright colors and makes them more natural looking hues, which is not the point.

Double bonus verse: so then how does laundry blue color the fabric, if it's applied very shortly and in cold water? Well, it doesn't. Think about when you add laundry blue to your clothes (or just trust me on this one because what I'm about to tell you is correct). You add it into the rinse water. Laundry blue does not harm your garments and can be applied in cold water and with no activating chemicals because it does not get into the fabric fibers. That's why it doesn't harm the garments, and why it has to be added after every wash. The way clothes are woven leaves a lot of space in the weave of the fabric, and the blue pigment just sits in the holes in the weave. It doesn't touch the fiber at all. This means it washes out (can be a little tricky if you overused it and stained something blue, but that's why we follow instructions on the label) and doesn't damage the fabric or the fibers. It basically doesn't do anything except hitch a ride in the space in the fabric, which it can do because it's added as the last thing and then the fabric is left to dry with the colored water in it. All hail the laundry blue.

Anyway, dye works for a reason and that reason isn't the reason people think and maybe just never trust new things ever and only ever use the things we know. *music from high school musical plays*

Appropriating nature - Alpha Males to Worker Ants.

Why do we only aproppriate and relate to nature when it applies to dominance or taking other people's stuff? The best example of this is wolf politics or the fallacy of the "Alpha Male" which found its footing in since debunked science . It was born of synthetic conditions that only tell us the distressed lupine psychology once wolves are held captive. The concept of an "alpha male" is infact modelled on emotional distress displayed by wolves once they are stripped of thier freedom...Alpha Wolfs complete flim flam. (Somewhere Joe Rogan is weeping into a deer carcass)

So post WW2 (The exact time we're our relationship with nature really seems to collapse with the same grace as Charles and Diana - we are Charles in this scenario btw) a scientist named Schenkel was tasked with studying captive wolfs and thier hierarchies. Which was directed to support new ideas of classism and capitalism. The wolves were found to be aggressive (me too if I was trapped in a small lab) to one another fighting and concluding with a victorious male. This made way to the term "Alpha male" and our misunderstanding of archetypal male behaviour. All of which would encourage competitive male work hierarchies and the "dog eat dog", toxic male culture rife in modern culture (i believe everytime "alpha male" is uttered in earnest, a man will start another "political discussion and satire" podcast and be sponsored by a protein supplement)

What later studies found was these conclusions by schenkel were largely due to the subjects being held in captivity. Other studies conducted in there natural enviroment found wolf packs operate within family units. The references of alphas refer to the mother and father were "power" is distributed equally and its used more to ensure pack members have what they need I.e being safe and fed. Dominance fights are infact very rare. The study was conducted over 14 years and made none of Schenkels observations of lupin social structures. Concluding "Alpha male" refers exclusive to the breeding couple and nothing else.

Its not more appropriate to refer to a doe deer as an alpha. Its a meaningless term that has been attached to social and institutional structures and then absorbed as fact. The entire justification for schenkels theory is validated by natural science when in reality it just enforces an artifical dominance hierarchy amongst humans. Its like studying humans in prison and asserting "oh wow humans really like trading things for cigarettes"

Curiously we rarely appropriate nature in regard to insects. The only real comparisons I can strike is with the industrious hard working honey bee - which is directly championing over working for a "hive" or Queen. We even visualise many work infographics as hives. Making a distinction of the lesser workers (bees) and a buisness money pot (queen) A model in lue of the Queen is also exclusively male in our aproppriation. A similar appropriation can be found in our interpretation of ant colonies. The exceptions being that ants triumph due to thier lacking emotional capacity and dominate strength, it resonates better with our misunderstanding of male traits and emotional capacity.

Despite our constant misinterpretation of nature and its absorption into our social structures it communicates the power of natures mascots we use to orientate ourselves and one another. It has been historically used for nefarious gain but can this be subverted? Nature is far more giving and kind than it is dominant and aggressive. How can we appropriate the positive interuptative traits of nature? Could animation be a way to rearrange our entomological appropriation? Is this appropriation of nature good at all? This last one is the trickiest for me.

We mould our understanding of nature in relation to our own human experiences. As a consequence the seperate and complex intelligence of nature is sidelined and abstractified. We no longer look beyond the "Alpha wolf" label for example. A species becomes defined by our reductive and inaccurate human lens. The hard working and robot ant become only this and now incapable of escaping the role human narrative has forced upon it. The appropriation of nature in our language, science and entertainment may in fact shoo away our biophilia. It strips species down to a singular emotional construct. They can no longer be seen outside of it and this often gets absorbed into popular culture. We rationialise deplorable human behaviour into a precast mould that we pour the natural world into. We simplify and politicise natural "science" to fortify indifference to one another and often non progressive, Conservative ideal and capitalism. We use it to double down on alot of unnatural evolved human idiocy. As if we are aware it's damaging for all involved so we grasp at the earth to find reasoning. This reminds me alot of Kafkas reflections in regard to bureaucracy and how he projects it onto nature (The Metamorphosis 1915)

The interuptive nature of this phenomena however does leave appropriation vulnerable to the opposite application. As an artist there's a strength to be found in subjectivity and interuptation that isn't bound to accuracy. Illuminating and exaggerating favourable insect behaviour to fit around comparable human habits may encourage behavioral change and biophilia. Appropriation of nature in both a biophobic and biophilic sense supports E O Wilsons observations of us as the "Poetic Species". That we favour our metaphors, symbols and interuptations much more than our data. E.g we have compared and modelled much of our gender roles around misinterpreted or debatable animal pack hierarchies.

Ok. I'm beginning to walk into neighbouring Gardens now, I don't know where I am anymore and people are looking at me through their windows. Il stop here. I've lost my footing and fell into a ditch.

Many food contact materials (FCMs) and reusable plastics in the food industry contain poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), a group of synthetic pollutants that are known to be potentially harmful for wildlife, humans, and the environment. PFAS may migrate from FCMs to food consumed by humans. As a replacement for plastics, often paper and other plant-based materials are used in commercial settings. This also applies to drinking straws, where plant-based and other presumably eco-friendly straws are increasingly used to reduce plastic pollution. In order to make these materials water-repellent, PFAS are added during manufacturing but can also already be present early in the supply chain due to the use of contaminated raw materials. In the present study, we examined the PFAS concentrations in 39 different brands of straws, made from five materials (i.e. paper, bamboo, glass, stainless steel, and plastic) commercially available on the Belgian market. We combined both targeted and suspect-screening approaches to evaluate a wide range of PFAS. PFAS were found to be present in almost all types of straws, except for those made of stainless steel. PFAS were more frequently detected in plant-based materials, such as paper and bamboo. We did not observe many differences between the types of materials, or the continents of origin. The presence of PFAS in plant-based straws shows that they are not necessarily biodegradable and that the use of such straws potentially contributes to human and environmental exposure of PFAS.

The most sustainable alternative seems to be stainless-steel straws, which can be reused, do not contain PFAS and can be fully recycled.

So I have been rewatching Star Trek: Picard (for my Mapping La Sirena project, more on this anon) and there is something I have been wondering about for a while. Maybe other people have opinions about this? (Spoilers and way too much rambling after the cut ;9)

When we first get glimpses of the Admonition, there is a shot of the eyes of an android which turns into the eyes of Data. I mean... it’s very, very clearly data, not some generic humanoid android. And that bothered me because how would a 200.000 year old message created by overpowered synths from outside spacetime contain concrete images of the future?

And then I just rewatched ep 9 and the whole, unjumbled version of the message that Sutra sees and it got even more weird, when you think about it too much. There are tons of images that would not have existed 200.000 years ago, things like Da Vinci’s Vitruvian Man, Data, Synths with the Starfleet chevron, the attack on Mars, etc.

So I now have two theories about this:

1: It’s a prophecy The super-synths exist outside of space and time. I have no idea what that means exactly or if it even makes sense, but it could imply that time is meaningless to them, so they could have taken images from anywhwere in our timeline. This has its own problems, namely: How would they know about Data, about the attack on Mars (something that would not have happened had they not created the Admonition) but wouldn’t know that Soji would ultimately chose not to contact them? Are synthetic beings the only ones who have a true free will and whose actions cannot be predicted? So that after the critical point in evolution, the super-synths can’t see anything in that world’s/galaxy’s/whatever’s spacetime anymore? This gets into the nitty-gritty of how even does time(travel) work, something that Star Trek has a... mixed record on (i remember a friend who refused to watch DS9 because the concept of the Prophets existing outside space and time put them off too much), but it’s a possibility nonetheless.

2: It’s Oh’s interpretation of the Admonition I recently reread the truly, truly excellent Applied Ethics for Theoretical Cybernetics where at one point, Emil and Agnes discuss how she only has Oh’s distorted interpretation of the Admonition in her head. In the mind-meld, Oh transferred her experience and perception of the Admonition and we have seen that experiencing it drives people mad. So it would be reasonable to assume, that the message itself might not contain any concrete images, just... general feelings, warnings, unformed thoughts - and whoever experiences it fills in their own visuals for the abstract concepts Admonition is showing them.

Oh has been living with this horrible, traumatic scar on her mind for literal decades. Her brain has filled in visuals for specific aspects of it, like the early Starfleet Androids (the Chevron has the shape from the TOS-era), Data, the attack on Mars, and there are even glimpses of what are probably Jana’s eyes - whom Oh would likely have seen a picture of when Vandermeer contacted her about the First Contact.

My two main points in support of this theory are first: we see flashes of the Zhat Vash going mad after experiencing the Admonition, the scene we saw at the beginning of ep. 8. It would make sense for that to be mixed in, since it’s a pretty vivid memory of Oh’s (also, we saw she transferred bits of that scene to Agnes along with the rest at the beginning of ep. 7). So the whole things is at least somewhat contaminated with Oh’s own memories and experiences. Second: a lot of the images are human/Terran-centric (the fox decomposing (thanks for that, btw -.-), the embryo, the aging human, etc.). That might be because humans were the first to develop sentient synthetic life, or it might be because in showing the vision to Agnes, a human, Oh’s mind supplied visuals for the abstract thoughts of the Admonition that would make sense to Agnes, too. (Yes, that raises the question of “why do we see flashes of that at the beginning of ep 8 when it’s all Romulans?” which might indicate the “humans are the first to develop sentient synths”-explanation is more plausible, but I have no qualms to put that up to the editors being way too in love with that bloody decomposing fox and move on...)

Either of the two main theories raises the question why we see glimpses of the signal tower, since Oh can’t have known about it and the super-synths being able to see and leave images of the future up to and including the signal tower but then not knowing that Soji is going to turn it off is... not very satisfying. So I would imagine it’s there because the Admonition contains an instruction set on how to build the thing, which would make sense in either version of events.

Sooooo. Yeah. Does anybody have any other theories we can add to this?

Yes, I am MASSIVELY overthinking this on a scale that does not bode well for how the whole Mapping project is going to go because people will get tired of the pedantry, but my brain insisted we put this in writing somewhere. And I didn’t want to spam Horizon with this on WhatsApp, since she already suffers enough under my constant “I DISCOVERED THERE IS ANOTHER DOOR ON LA SIRENA THAT I HAD NOT SEEN BEFORE”-texts...

It comes in a sleek but plastic container and contains 15 grams (0.53 oz). It has the typical BB cushion scent, like the products ingredients mixed together.

The product comes with a refill (not pictured) that contains another puff. So you receive two puffs. The packaging itself has a magnetic lid and very pretty contemporary purple packaging.

I find in this cushion that the coverage is more medium when using the puff. (Lipstick is Gerard Cosmetics Hydratmatte Liquid Lipstick in Immortal).

If I apply it using a damp beauty sponge, the coverage is much more light to medium and it really looks like skin. I prefer this as it just makes my skin look better than it is.

There is some flashback in this BB cushion keep that in mind.

Recommended use is to dispense an appropriate amount and spread evenly over the skin. Use at the foundation step of your makeup routine after finishing skincare in the morning. This cushion has whitening/sunscreen/wrinkle correction functions. After using, so I've heard good things about HERA products and was excited to finally invest in one. I have dry to very dry skin and am always looking for BB cushions that are dewy with a natural finish. The UV MIST CUSHION ULTRA MOISTURE is hydrating and soothing on the skin, the coverage can go from light to medium to medium depending on if you use the puff or a beauty sponge. The finish when you use the puff is medium coverage and is pretty dewy. For longevity's sake, it should be set with powder (though I don't typically set my BB cushions) so it felt heavy but looked nice for a short time. I actually prefer to use a beauty sponge (I use the Real Techniques sponge btw) as the finish is really natural and you can see my freckles and imperfections which I very much like. After applying with the sponge the product stays pretty well for about 8 hours and then it does start to break down around the mouth/chin area. This might be fixed by using a very sticky primer possibly or setting the cushion with a good setting powder. I do find this color #23 Beige to be a little too light right now and I'd like to try the shade darker for the summer but otherwise, it's a pretty good fit. My skin fits MAC's NC25 pretty well so this would be good unless you're planning to get a little more tan. But I should note, this does have some flashback if you’re planning to do photography. After removing this cushion it really leaves the skin hydrated as it's got really great ingredients. I'd recommend this to people with dry skin, people who prefer a dewy finish, and possibly to people with sensitive skin.

What I like: the coverage is perfect and lightweight and the color really suits me pretty well. The product is very hydrating and moisturizing and has a beautiful finish. It can be built from light to medium coverage and another thing to mention is the packaging is pretty, I like the magnetic lid in particular. The ingredients are really nice and this is an all-around good product for dry skin. I actually also think it would work for sensitive skin. What I don't like: doesn't have the longest wear time and starts to break up around the chin/mouth area. If you don't prefer to set your makeup that's something to keep in mind.

The story of how I got disabled.

For those that don’t know me that well.. (Or maybe just for myself, to keep my story clear.. or to overshare.. or to break the silence..)

I am currently 24 and have graduated from university about half a year ago; chemistry mayor. (Oh, and I am actually Dutch.. So I may mess up my sentences every now and then..)

I have done my master’s degree at another university than where I started off during my bachelor’s, because of reasons that will soon become clear.

Even though I have successfully obtained my master’s degree in chemistry with special notes to my practical skills, I still am having quite serious issues over what I am about to tell you.

I am visually impaired, probably roughly on the edge of legal blindness, but since we don’t use the same notations in my country as basically anywhere else, I have no way of knowing if that assumption is correct. (But if the system works as I have ‘interpreted’ in, my vision is below 20:200..)

Also, I have always been sort of against calling myself ‘disabled’-> I am perfectly able of basically anything a ‘normal’ or ‘average’ person is capable of.

(Well, sure there are some exceptions, like, I would not be able to drive a car.. But cars are overrated anyway so 😊)

I can hear you asking: ‘why is this even relevant? You seem to be doing perfectly fine, having your master’s degree and all?’ – Indeed, why would it be?

So here comes a recap of the first of two Facebook posts that have become even more relevant as time passes me by..(Okay, actually it has become more of a rough translation, because I don’t like leaving stuff out..):

‘From ten to zero’ (Posted on November 10th, 2015)

The post started with a general apology for all the drama that was about to unfold, sort of admitting that I just needed to share what had been going on, for I couldn’t deal with it on my own.

Before I proceed with this recap, I want to add that during this period in my life, I have had a lot of support from friends, family and more; I don’t think I have ever felt as much love and care as I have during this period – Dear everyone, I probably wouldn’t still be here without you. (Yeah, I may have stated stuff like that before, but I can assure you that it’s heartfelt.. And I am not ashamed to admit that.)

When I wrote the post, I was in my third year of the bachelor’s. I was participating in a special minor from biopharmaceutical sciences, that was mainly focused on medical chemistry. I had chosen this minor because it included a course called ‘bio-organic synthesis’-> my life’s passion.

Before I even know about organic chemistry, stuff like that had always interested me very much and I wanted to ‘become a researcher.’ During my bacherlor’s, I found out about organic chemistry and the possibility of doing a PhD -> quite the motivator! (No, but really.. I actually put a lot of work in more courses, especially the ones I was interested n.)

Even though I have never been a ‘straight-A student,’ I definitely had potential to do a PhD. (But more about that later.. Because holy shit, let’s not derail the story into a wibbly wobbly timey wimey chaotic mess just yet.)

Okay, so back to this minor, or perhaps first some more background..

Even though I don’t like to focus on my disability, it has probably sort of always played an undeniable role in my life. Growing up ‘different’ is though. It always is. Especially when people can see something is wrong with you, even though you don’t see that yourself. (Hah! - Wait, was that the first pun? We’re what, roughly 600 words in the story? Damn, I must be really off today..)

Anyway, for all my life, I have been pushing myself to do everything as normal as possible. Normal primary school, normal secondary school, normal high-school. Sure, I walked up to the blackboard as a kid, and had special binoculars to read the board in high-school.. But that’s just the way things were – no harm in that, right? (I mean, I am not even sure who I am trying to convince here.. Is it you.. or me?)

There are a few reasons as to why I have always pursuit a ‘normal’ life.

First of all, I hate being labelled or stigmatized. My disability may make me do some things a little differently; but it does not make less (capable) than anyone else.

Secondly, which is actually linked to what I stated above; fuck stigmatization, Really, fuck that shit. I guess I have just always felt moved by the way the world works and the way society has its ways of putting down those that are different in any way. – Yes, this goes much further than just my stupid eye disability..

As a kid I wanted to become a super-hero.

During my teens, I guess, I figured that that actually was possible in a way.

By just ‘making it’- I thought - I could set an example to others; don’t let anyone tell you what you can or cannot do or who you can or cannot be, because you can do or become anything or anyone you set your mind to.

And I was well on my way of doing so. – Oh, did I shine brightly as I aced my synthetic organic chemistry final.. My one and only 10/10, all perfect score.. on university level.

This theoretical synthetic organic chemistry course was one of the two main reasons I had chosen to do this minor.

The other one, perhaps needless to say, was a practical bio-organic chemistry course given by a man called R.. During my first year at uni, we had had an argument and I felt like he sort of hated my guts.. So, I wasn’t too happy to see he would give the course. But at the same time, he didn’t seem that bad at the time I was applying for the minor. He had seen the way I worked hard for my organic chemistry courses (he assisted in the previous organic chemistry course, on which I scored 9/10..)

Before even applying to the minor, (say it was in June..) I had also spoken to him about the fact I wanted to do the course, especially because I also wanted to do my bachelor thesis in organic chemistry, (then my master.. etc..)

The only reason I sort of ‘asked for permission’ is because I have always done so. I have always been open about the fact I am visually impaired, just to make sure people know in advance. – I mean, maybe if things are out in the open, people won’t feel the need to stigmatize me so much?

R. had seen me do practical work in the first year, and he didn’t see any reason of why I couldn’t join the course. However, he did advise me to also do a computational course (rather than another practical one), just to let me try that as well.

As a bit of yet another extra layer of background, before I even joined the study itself, I have spoken with several people about all of this -> my disability and the possibilities. One conversation I can remember was with a woman called A. (some sort of study advisor.) She was very, very positive and told me she was fully confident I would do great. But, if there would be any trouble, I just have to tell her, and she would help me find a way to work around it. – I never felt the need to. You see, I have done several practical courses, all of which I passed. Sometimes barely, but that had more to do with my writing skills.. (Really, my outstanding practical skills have actually saved my grades, more than once.)

So, back to the story..

Somewhere around the end of September, I went to speak to R.. In our conversation a few months earlier (the one where I sort of asked him permission to join ‘his’ course in December) he had also said he thought it would be best if I worked together with someone during the practical course. Because I was determined to pursue a carrier in organic synthesis, I wanted to tell him that I’d rather do the course alone – to truly test my own capability. (I was pretty sure I could pull it off, otherwise I would of course not have asked, but say, as a final confirmation.)

It didn’t come to that. He started the conversation with saying ‘that there had been a problem…’ He told me that there was a chance I was no longer allowed to work on the ab, because of ‘insurance reasons’ – if I were to cause an accident, the insurance wouldn’t pay because of my disability. (The fact my disability makes me extra aware of safety and work extra securely wasn’t even considered..)

After our conversation, R. told me he was going to figure out the depths of it. He told me he was going to discuss this with all people involved, because everyone knew me as a motivated and capable student.

I thanked him nevertheless, not wanting to ‘shoot the messenger’..

Roughly a month passed, a month of silence. I could feel myself slipping down again.. Yet, I was able to hold on the hope that this had all be some sort of misunderstanding. (Also, just a month before this, I had gotten my first tattoo, which made me feel pretty powerful. Oh, silly me.. I still sometimes feel like I have jinxed it all by raising my chin like that.. >.> - Ah well, let’s no go there again, for once, let’s just not.. </3)

Fun fact, the synthetic organic chemistry course was also in this month. I t was a rough month, but I fucking aced it. And that was what I needed; extra proof of my determination. So I e-mailed R., who told me to talk to the SOC professor (the dean of the research group at which the practical course was going to be held – nice guy btw; he was still on my side and may even have remained on my side till the end..)

After being sent back and forth in e-mails between R. and that professor a few times, I talked a bit in real life with the SOC professor and he told me that it would be best if I went to see R. next Monday.

On November 9, 2015 (which was my 21th birthday) I went to have a nice and cozy talk with my bestest friend R.. (He truly is the most tactful and sympathetic man on this planet! God, I love him like I would love having my nails ripped off, well, actually I would have preferred that over this bullshit..)

He started off with saying he didn’t really have time, so he’d keep it short.

With a grin, he told me that: ‘He actually isn’t supposed to tell me what he would be so glad to tell me..’ (because he had yet to discuss it with P., the dean of the study.) I can’t remember what I asked in that brief moment of hope..

‘But it’s not looking good for you!’ – Without any space for me to think or truly speak, the conversation shifted towards the fact that I had to go and talk to A. (the study adviser) and P. (the study dean) to see what my options were to even finish my bachelor’s.. Because sure as hell was I never going to be able to do my bachelor’s thesis at ‘his’ group, not even to speak of my master’s..

The whole ordeal didn’t take much more than 5 minutes. I remember running off to the restroom as fast as I could. Never before had my make-up been smudged all the way down to my chin. (If that doesn’t paint a clear picture, I don’t know what will.)

I was really fucking heartbroken. All I had worked for got crushed like it was nothing. Did it all mean so little?

I remember being really confused a well. How did this happen? And why did this happen now? Why didn’t anyone tell me about this before?

And most importantly.. Who caused this?

‘I tried so hard and got so far.. Just to be shoved away again.

I know I have to move on, to take a different direction perhaps. To figure out a way to finish my studies nevertheless – when one door closes..

Sigh, I know I shouldn’t let this get in my way.. but right now, I just can’t..

How is one supposed to act once one’s dream gets shattered?’

Next will be the ‘recap’ of the second post, almost a year after the first. I regret not writing more in between these two posts.. But that was just because all my efforts were wasted. Just believe me when I say that I have talked with a lot of people and done basically anything in my power to figure out how things got to be the way they were. During the time in between these two posts I managed to finish my bachelor’s degree at ‘another’ university. (My luck, the educational track was shared by two universities, so I ‘simply’ hopped to the other university.. Which actually wasn’t simple, but that story is not relevant at this point.)

The truth; prepare for drama.

The Thursday before I wrote this post, I had been to my bachelor’s graduation ceremony. I didn’t want to go there at all, but since it was not just my ceremony but also that of my husband, we decided to go after all. (We had been asked to hand in a personal PowerPoint slide and actually decided to hand in one together, since we had gotten married that year – they didn’t bother to even mention it..)

Anyway, during that time, I had started my master’s degree at a university in Amsterdam (2-hour travel from my home..) and felt really depressed. Getting out of bed felt like a life sentence – and that was just the start of the day. Everything felt pretty fucking pointless, I mean, why even try? The whole situation at my old uni was troubling me a lot. It didn’t matter that I had provided myself with a new start; I was broken, so fucking broken. What’s the point of trying to fight a system build on ignorance and stigmatization? – I felt like I could trust no one, that even though I was given a fair chance, it would probably be taken from me again.

Even though I knew deep down that the system was just fucked, I was filled with self-loathing. ‘I mean, they were right, right? I am legally blind, who am I fooling? I shouldn’t be trying stuff like this, I am never going to be good enough. What if they were actually just trying to protect me?’ – The lies we tell ourselves..

Anyway, back to the ceremony..

We had intended to go there and just fake through it all. Just shine on and make them regret sending me away. However, hehe, I am not a fake. (Oh and trust me, I tried. I even decided not to wear my necklace, just as a way of accepting the fake fuck I planned to be.. – Oh sweet irony.)

All the stuff that had been building up in the past year.. All these unanswered questions, all the powerlessness..

The exact moment when I had to collect my degree and smile for my dad to take a picture, I couldn’t hold my tears no more..

Not wanting to make a scene, I hid my face and just sat down in order to let the further ceremony proceed as planned.

At this point, I think it’s time for some more background. During this past year, I had spoken to a lot of different people about the whole situation. I even went as far as going the university’s ombudsman.. ..who was going to help me.. ..empty words.. (I don’t think the story is relevant at this point; let’s just say he probably didn’t want this all to get out in the open because that would make a bad name for the university.. Or at least, that’s the impression I got from the way he acted,, It’s much more complicated. Ugh..)

I also went to see P., the dean of the bachelor’s study a few times. He did ‘help me’ with arranging things to get to finish my bachelor’s at the other university, but that was all he did – and probably just because I was actually a good student so me graduating without a delay would be good for his statistics. – More about him later.

I had also spoken to A. a lot about this whole ordeal. I actually trusted her, so I had also talked to her about some personal issues that had also been going on around that time. She seemed to really want to help me, yet she couldn’t help me figure out who had caused all this or the reason why.. I remember asking her if it would be possible for R. (from before) to have anything to do with this, for he was the one that told me there was ‘a problem’ in the first place.. But she almost violently denied that. She was absolutely sure, because, she told me, R. is usually the one to help students who are struggling to pass classes or get stuff arranged. – I believed her, sort of feeling guilty to let my own prejudice, my personal issues towards the man lead me to such foundationless conclusions.

I had also spoken to the dean of the master’s study, L. This is not really relevant to this story, but I do not want to leave it out because this specific conversation actually still haunts me to this day.

I went to see her to talk about the possibilities of doing my master’s at that university (the one I also did my bachelor’s.) L. knew me, she had actually given one of the courses I had taken (and passed nicely.)

In the conversation, she made up all sorts of comparisons as to why she would deny me from doing the master’s. Before all of this, I was the first visually impaired student they had ever seen at this study. But at this point, I suddenly wasn’t. For example, she had had another visually impaired student that had to stick her head in the fume hood to measure things. (I am still not sure this is even true, because someone with that little common sense would probably not even able to finish high-school..) Either way, the way she told me this was more as an attack than just information. She also told me that there was another student in her masters, and all her experiments failed. (Assuming it was due to her disability.. Experiments sometimes just fail, you know?)

To finish off what was left of my self-esteem, one of the last things she said to me was: ‘You are just trying to deny you are disabled.’ – I can’t even.

I think this is one of the most hurtful things someone has ever said to me. Especially during a period in my life where I was finally sort of accepting who I was and be open about everything..

..Enough about that.

To summarize it all, one thing became clear over time: nobody had my back. The general attitude towards me had shifted from ‘that one talented and motivated student’ to ‘the stupid disabled kid that is going to get us in trouble..’ Basically, all they were doing was trying to save themselves and each other. Again, I regret not have written down more about all the conversations I have had, because that would make this all more believable.

Because yes, I sometimes, most of the time, feel like a fraud. That is must be all in my head, that I must not be so negative, that not everyone is out to get me, etc.. – Yes, not everyone is out to get me, there are a lot of loving caring people out there, but not those pieces of shit that were involved in this. (There were some people at my old university that would probably have loved to help me.. But no-one likes to risk it all for just some student, and I can understand that..)

Anyway, back to the story..

After the ceremony, there were free drinks. (Ah, drinking! Another habit I had picked up that year..)

As we (my husband, parents and me) were standing there with our drinks, A. (the study adviser from before) walked up to me; ‘Ahhhhh, congratulations! How are youuuu? How is Ansterdaaaam?’ (I had specifically told her it was a secret that I was going to do my masters in Amsterdam, because I didn’t want anyone to ruin that for me.. But what to expect? Spineless cunt..)

With a clear face and calm tone, I told her that it was hard for me to focus on my studies, considering all the stuff that ha happened to me. She said something like: ‘Oh, that’s a shame.’ And walked off.

I felt pretty proud of myself for shaking her off like that, not making a scene, etc. I even remember ‘bragging’ about that to my husband and parents, and probably getting a ‘pad on the back’ for that. – and trust me, I felt it. I really did not want to make a scene. I truly wanted to leave it all behind me and move on..

Until M., (the new study’s dean who was completely oblivious to this whole situation..) walked u to me to have a little chat. This poor woman probably just wanted to meet me or do some chit-chat.. She got the full blow.

I told her all about what had happened the past year, how I felt depressed, and how just knew I needed to know the whole truth in order to move on with my life.. Obviously, P. (the other dean) noticed something was going on and joined the conversation. I could clearly notice I was not the only one no longer being able to control my emotions. P. got really irritated, telling me they had tried everything but couldn’t help me with unraveling the truth.

After some more of the ‘I need closure’- ‘We can’t give you these answers you are looking for’ drama, M. proposed to have a closer look at the whole situation. Based on something A. had told me before, she suggested to contact J. (some professor with a high function in the whole education thing, A. had suggested in the past that he may have had something to do with it..)

But since my part in this had started with the conversations with R., I proposed it would perhaps be best to ask him once more. Not to shoot the message, but just to start at the beginning of the source.

M. proposed to e-mail R. next week – I didn’t want to wait that long, so we decided to check if he was in the building and just meet face to face.

Long story short, he was in the building and we went to pay him a visit.

I told him about what had happened today, and how we basically wanted to ask him once more what he knew, since he was the one that told me there was a problem in the first place. I asked him if he had any who had started all of this.

With a straight face, he directly admitted that he was the one that had started this. His reason behind this was that he simply didn’t want to take responsibility for me during the bio-organic synthesis practical course or anything related to that, ‘because he wouldn’t be able to guarantee my safety.’ (He did get defensive though, stating J. was the one to eventually ‘seal the decision’ - which was of course completely irrelevant, like, anyone could ‘agree’ with any statement produced by someone with influence..)

Of course, I asked him why he had decided all of this at this point, and not before or during the time I was signing up for the course. He simply replied with: ‘I didn’t know your vision is only 0.15’ (actually, it’s even less but okay..) I replied with something like: ‘What does such a number even say? It might as well had been 0.25, 0.35 or 0.55..’ – He shut me off, stating my argument was going nowhere.

Then, I told him it simple didn’t make any sense. He had known (about) me since day one, and actually co-supervised one of my very first practical courses. He knew exactly how good or bad my vision was and what he could expect from me, working on the lab. (Really, nothing out of the ordinary there..)

Mockingly, and with a somewhat arrogant voice he said: ‘Oh, yes, I know you all too well.’ Then, he started stating some bullshit about how he had seen me work, and how my ways were just unacceptable for an organic chemist. (Like for example standing too close to a rotary evaporator.)

I told him that we are students for a reason, that we are there to learn. I was even able to come up with something that happened between us during that first practical course. How I made some (non-sight related) rooky mistake, and how he had told me that I had to do it differently – and so I did. (He didn’t actually tell me, he been growling at me since day one.. Not just at me btw..)

Again, he cut me off, stating that he could name a dozen things more, but to which he wouldn’t go into further argument over.

He also started another bullshit story about how I have always had been given a special treatment, such as working together with a partner.

I told him this wasn’t true, because everyone was teamed up with a partner during these first few practical courses. – He shut me off, stating ‘he knew for sure how HIS practical courses were.’

Eventually, my dad tried to intervene, to which R. got irritated, stating how he was through with being cussed at – he told us to leave. (Who exactly cussed at who?)

As we left the room, with a lot of irritation in my tone, I gave him the kind advice not to crush people’s dreams in less than 5 minutes (on their birthday) next time. And to maybe look after your students some more after dropping such bad news on them.

Obviously, this too got ignored. As well as all other signs of emotion, both verbally and non-verbally during all the conversations we had had.

A few moments later, as we walked down the hallway, I had a mental breakdown. I have said some things in front of my husband and parents I am not so proud of.. (I hate it when the people I care about see me in such a state..) Eventually, my vision went blurry (yeah, even blurrier than usual 😊) and I fell through my knees.

10 minutes or so passed, then guess what?

I can remember hearing me dad say: ‘oh, there he is..’

I can’t remember who spoke first, one of my parents or R. himself.

I remember his psychopathic emotionless voice say: ‘good evening’ – something snapped.

I remember screaming: ’My blood will be on your hands, motherfucker!’ – Words I am not proud of, but were, at that very moment, genuine and heartfelt.

He didn’t respond. Then, I added: ‘I hope someone will someday take from you what you have stolen from me!’ – words that are more than genuine and heartfelt even to this day.

He simply walked off – he didn’t even flinch.

Some more desperate cries I luckily can’t remember later, I remember grabbing some newspapers that were laying around and completely ripping them apart. (Honestly, I think the fact I was not alone at that moment have saved me a lot of nasty, nasty stuff..) – I am pretty fucking proud of how I handled that shit at that moment. Could have easily ripped either him or (more likely) myself to shreds.

To conclude:

I have had issues with this man from day one. But we are all only human, and I didn’t want to let my own experiences lead me astray. Deep down, I think I knew from the start that he was the cause of this all along. But it didn’t even make sense. Why would he do this?

Even to this day, it makes no sense. How can someone be that sick?

Later, I found out that R. had pulled similar (but slightly different) stuff to other people as well; probably just for the thrills. – This guy is a true psychopath.

Now comes the hardest part.

Today is the Ides of March, 2019.

It’s 00:24 AM., and I just don’t know what to say.

I thought that by rewriting this, I could maybe come closer to understanding the actual damage this has done to me.

The problem is, it has been, what, 3 years? – So much has happened – it still makes no sense.

I guess all I can say is:

I am disabled.

I am disabled by means of not being able to do stuff other people are able to.

I am unable to accept myself the way I was born. (I didn’t ask for this body?)

I am unable to be myself and do things in my own way – I am in constant fear of being judged. Being rejected. Being send away. Again, and again, and again.

(Honestly. I can’t even pour some water into a beaker in front of people without freezing up..)

I have become the stigma and am unable to conquer that.

Who really is to blame, is it me or you?

The system perhaps?

Well guess what; we are all to blame.

I have let it happen. – And I will never be able forgive myself for that.

I had one fucking goal in life. – And ‘you’ took it from me.

But really, it wouldn’t be fair to blame you.

I was broken from the start, held together by stupid sharpie doodles and a little bit of ink..

This could be about so much more..

But let’s not go there. Not today.

You know what?

For today's #TextureTuesday, I'm sharing the Triple Berry Smoothing Peel from @reneerouleauskincare. This contains five skin-smoothing fruit AHAs, BHAs and enzymes that help clear clogged pores and smooth surface texture. Meanwhile, England and Wales existed as a modestly sized island. But as the plates kept moving, these two places found themselves on a collision course. Whistle to my soul

So I wanna talk about the upcoming BTS comeback song, DNA and its possible connection with previous concepts. If you've seen the teaser, then you probably saw 7 good looking guys doing suddenly some smooth moves to a whistle tune and before you realized what was happening it was over. Oh yeah, they are looking really nice for this comeback. But what I wanna talk is about the whistle as a symbol and how it can relate with previous concepts.

First, let's make clear what a whistle could symbolize: On a positive light, if done absent-minded its an expression of cheerfulness or happiness at that given moment. On another hand, it can also symbolize a call for attention and in it's more negative form it could represent an alarm or signal of danger.

That being said, let's focus on the last two meanings which are used alot through other symbols (soundwise) in previous BTS songs.

By other symbols I mean ringing bell sounds, sirens and the like. A ringing bell for instance can be heard in NO MORE DREAM as a call for attention to the youth that has no goals or dreams for their life. Similarly, you can hear a police siren in N.O. But, let's skip ahead to I NEED U cause otherwise it'll take me forever.

Btw, I advice you to read my previous post (although Jimin focused) on my interpretation connecting HYYH era until upcoming Love Yourself, since my following ideas exposed are complimentary.

So I NEED U starts with this synthetic drop like sound and as Suga's rap progresses it becomes higher pitched and it resembles more a synthetic singing/whistling bird. And well, you all know how birds play a big part in BTS MVs, so I'm not gonna go too deep in this but if we consider that "synthetic/whistling bird" = "unnatural/fake bird" then it would fit with the whole idea that in that era, they were still at a transitional point were they hadn't fully grown their own "wings" as birds that can fly, and so they were just "pretending" (check out Jimin running with spread arms in the gif above)... and thus it's a call for attention, which leads us to the whole "fake self" portrayed in Love Yourself Highlight Reel.

Forgetting about the M/V storyline though, it gives off this nostalgic cry vibe which fits with the loneliness the overall song and lyrics portray. In that sense, it's similar to Whalien52 high pitch staple sound. Let's talk about RUN though.

RUN has similar sounds to I NEED U (like other songs from the same album) but what I wanna highlight is the sound resembling a faraway police/ambulance siren. It's best heard right at the beginning (around 0:05). Storyline wise, this siren would represent an alarm or signal of danger and throughout the MV you can see various instances fitting of this meaning with Suga & Jungkook fighting, V and Rap Monster getting chased by the police, Jungkook's car accident, etc.

From an exclusive lyrics point of view, they basically talk about being chase by the truth: that (their) love was a lie and thus they run, because they're still not ready to accept it. So the sense of being chased by the truth is accentuated by that faraway sounding siren, like when a police unit turns on their siren when chasing someone. On the other hand, we can also interpret it as an ambulance siren comming to get them because they're ill from their love.

That being said, both interpretation wouldn't be too farfetched if we also apply it to the MVs storyline, as we see V actually end up in a police station in STIGMA; Jungkook in a hospital in Love Yourself HIGHLIGHT Reels; and not to mention Jimin's and J-Hope's multiple introspective hospital bed /psychiatric ward scenes in RUN itself and LIE/MAMA short films.

And speaking of the Wings Short Films, throughout the series we can clearly hear sirens and eerie whistling that work as alarm/danger symbols and overall adding to the dark tone of each member's story.

Let's jump ahead to Blood Sweat & Tears though where you can also hear a siren that progressively becomes louder. The first instance it appears is through Jungkook's part right in the beginning.

For story purposes, it works as a symbol signaling that "something is about to happen". That "something" being the awakening/revelation that each of the members experience throughout the MV. Lyrics wise, that "something" is their surrendering to temptation. And speaking of temptation, alternatively that siren could be interpreted as the mythological creature "siren's voice" enchanting them. On that note, sirens were mostly depicted as a woman with bird like features that with a very sweetly voice would lull sailors to sleep and then kill them. And their name origin my come from the word "bind" in greek. Sounds familiar?

"My blood sweat & tears, my last dance take them all. My cold breath, take it away [...] Sweeter than sweet/ and Chocolate wings but your wings are those of a devil"

And the Japanese ver.: "Tie me up already baby [...] Please end it with your own hands"

Skipping further ahead into Spring Day, in the MV we can hear the departure bell for their "train of thought" which's destination is probably "where did things went wrong?" But speaking about the song itself, during practically the whole song you can hear this synthetic chord progression (is that what you call it?) Personally it was jarring to my ears at first, it's kinda like another kind of modulated siren (sorry I don't know how else to describe it). Anyway, it keeps repeating like how they keep going in circles inside their thoughts. This applies both lyrically (as RM mentions it in his part, and because of the persisting longing expressed in the hook) and visually through the members moving across different settings with each door they cross. Also, in the mv, towards the MV we can listen and see a train passing before Jungkook which could symbolize how his "train of thought" changed lanes and is no longer in a vicious closed circuit. Such change is reflected in the MV when they get off the train and lyrically in the last hook when they reach a decision (to meet on spring day) instead of just lamenting and wondering like previously.

Last stop before our final destination is NOT TODAY. For this one, you can listen right before Suga's rap a high pitch sound that fades away similar to when you have the sensation of a buzzing/ringing/beeping sound in your ears. This condition is called a tinnitus and according to google there's various causes but for storyline purposes, the ones fitting are:

-Natural aging (we see them all transition into adults)

-Certain drugs (J-hope in I need u/Mama/BST jp ver)

-When fainting (I Need U/ Save me: "save me before I fall" / Lie / Love yourself reel 3) Furthermore, it mentions drinking, smoking and stress can worsen the symptoms. In that sense, the ringing sound would represent a reminder of their "injuries and hardships" but since the sound clears out then they're "overcoming it" and Suga's rap right after matches really well with this interpretation. He goes: "No, not today, Today's too good to let it end"

So, back to my original reason for this post: the whistle in upcomming DNA. The teaser might've made it look to some that it might be unrelated to previous concepts. But personally I see a storyline progress throughout all of BTS concepts, it's just that they're just not necessarily in order and because they tend to focus more on the feelings rather than the actual events that cause them, people tend to find it confusing because they concentrate more on trying to understand the order of events rather than the feelings that are being portrayed.

But getting back on topic, recapping: in I need U there was a "synthetic whistle" which symbolized "fake love /un mature birds". Fast forward to DNA, and this time the whistle might be a representation of "real love" hearing how it's a natural sound and also holding a more positive meaning compare to previous similar types of sounds. And if we take into consideration the song title, the song could be about how "this love" defines each of them their uniqueness and/or how it's intrinsically part of them that they cannot change, in other words "unconditional".

Or I could be totally wrong and it's really just about Daegu's New Agust d (DNA) lamb skewers shop opening while Hobbie Eats Ramyeon(HER).

No, but seriously no matter whatever it turns out to be I can't wait for it. Anyway, this has been a long post of many ideas I've had for a while. Take note I don't have any formal knowledge in music nor a great hearing, so all this rambling is very subjective. So the way I described the sounds might be totally different for you, and they're not necessarily and most likely not deliberately produced that way by BTS and BigHit for the reasons stated above. So yeah, don't take it too seriously either. For me interpretations/theories are fun not because of deciphering out every single thing of what's happening and what the creator's view was but figuring out what it represents to myself.

Did you all listen to the second teaser? There's that same growing siren from BST and some high fashion/classy vibes soundwise. There's some beeping sounds resembling HYYH era (check RUN and Dead Leaves for instance) and the experimental sounds in BEGIN. Visually too it looks very clean with backgrounds aesthetics similar to the wings short films. Well that's it for now, gotta get back to work.

If you’re familiar with this blog, you know I love supporting my favourite beauty influencers with every collaboration they do. I’ve been following Shayla for years, continuously rooting for her success like yasssss sis, get it! She has secured the bag been doing big things with her collabs with major companies such as Tarte (my review is right here) and Maybelline, and has now launched a collection with one of my faves, Colourpop. Can I get a “yasssssss” for all this black girl magic or nah?

What’s in the collection?

3 Creme Lux Lipsticks (OOUUUU!, QUICKIE & C’MON SIS) ($7/each)

This collection was pretty cool in that Colourpop had various bundle options: we were able to purchase the PR collection ($75), the entire collection, and lipstick bundles.

My thoughts

Naturally, I bought the PR collection because I’m extra and wanted the beautiful packaging and all the excitement, however, I was slightly disappointed to see there wasn’t even a picture of Shayla in the box (especially because the shots from the promo shoot were straight fireeeee), but whatevs… The packaging was still lit.

PERCEPTION Pressed Powder Shadow Palette

This is 16 pan palette has a mix of mattes and metallic shadows like nothing I’ve ever seen before. A great mix of warm and cool tones that can take you from day to night. You’d think with the random pops of colour this would be a limited palette but not at all! There are so many different looks you can create with it.

Across the board, the quality of the shadows was impressive. The mattes were pigmented yet easily blendable; the shimmer shades were super pigmented and applied smoothly. There is some kickback with the shadows perhaps due to the pigment intensity but nothing unbearable. The mattes are easy to pack on, then blend – but bear in mind, a little goes a long way. The shimmers apply best with your finger when packed on the centre of the lid, or with a synthetic flat brush. Overall, the unique mix of colours and finishes work surprisingly well together.

And finally, I absolutely love the fact that this palette has a mirror! Ugh! Shayla girl, you know what’s really good!

NEAT FREAK Ultra Glossy Lip

This is described as a “high shine gloss with full-coverage, metallic pearl finish in a moisturising, and non-sticky comfortable formula.”

The base is a warm and translucent, with specks of gold and pink glitter. The glitter is noticeable without being too chunky. It’s beautiful and ideal for all skin tones in my opinion. Neat Freak has actually become my go-to gloss for all lipsticks – especially nudes and neutrals. I’ve worn it so regularly the writing on the package has faded away – I just ordered a back-up!!!! It is long-wearing, and fades away leaving bits of glitter on your lips. The consistency is smooth and it isn’t too sticky or tacky, nor does it settle into any fine lines on my lips. I’m also grateful that it wears without leaving that white, chalky residue around the rim of the mouth (especially at the inner corners – hello white squall!). The high-shine gives the appearance of fuller, plumper lips. All in all, this product gets an A+ from me.

DUPE: Maybelline’s Just a Glimmer

OOUUUU! Créme Lux Lipstick

Described as a “warm peach,” this creamy-matte lipstick was a colour that I was not in the least excited for. I love peachy-nudes, but this orange-peach just seemed not destined to work for my complexion. This colour definitely pulls more tangerine than peach on my skin. It applies fairly smoothly, but it quickly settles into my fine lines. This is definitely one to avoid if your lips are dry and crackly. For my complexion, I find it works best with a brown lipliner (MAC Cork or Colourpop BFF3): concentrate it in the centre of the lip. This combo also looks great when topped with Neat Freak.

DUPE: Bobbi Brown Baby Peach

QUICKIE Créme Lux Lipstick

As previously proclaimed, I love a peachy-nude!!! At first I truly thought Shayla played me – I was like which black girl is wearing this ashy mess?! Boy, was I wrong! This satin lipstick is deep peach with warm undertones. Just like Oouuuu!, this lipstick applied smoothly, however it didn’t settle into any lines. The colour is fully opaque with one swipe and is pretty long-wearing. Quickie paired with BFF3 lip pencil and Neat Freak is the nude combination I’ve been consistently rocking over the past 3 weeks. I am absolutely in love!

DUPE: Too Faced Melted Liquified Long Wear Lipstick in Melted Nude

C’MON SIS Créme Lux Lipstick

I was honestly. a little underwhelmed when I first saw this “soft pinky brown”, but this turned out to be so beautiful on my complexion. It’s such a great everyday colour, but can be paired with a dramatic eye look for a sexy night out on the town. It is a warm, rosy plum with a satin finish that applies more smoothly than the other two lipsticks. It wears super long without getting uncomfortable and doesn’t settle into any fine lines. This is my fave formula of the three lippies.

DUPE: Maybelline Touch of Spice

BOOMIN’ Luster Dust Loose Highlighter

A “peachy gold” highlighter, Boomin’ pulls more light gold with a warm undertone. It has a soft metallic sheen with a pearl finish. I’m not a fan of loose highlighters because I find them to be messy and not as easy to control as pressed ones, but this one was so finely milled that it applied and blended with ease. I prefer to use a fan brush (Morphe M601) to apply the product to my cheekbones and a detailer brush to highlight my nose and cupid’s bow. This highlighter worked for my skin tone, however I would not necessarily use it on a darker skin tone. This is ideal for medium to medium-deep skin tones.

DUPE: Laura Geller Baked Gelato Swirl Illuminator in Gilded Honey

POSE Luster Dust Loose Highlighter

Described as a “warm copper”, Pose is perfect to have your melanin poppin’ like the goddess you are. It is a warm-toned almost rose gold highlighter with a pearlescent finish that applied like a dream. The loose formula is very easy to blend so while a little goes a long way, it’s almost fool-proof. This would be a great bronzer or blush for lighter skin tones. My favourite way to rock Pose is with a hint of Boomin’ on top.

DUPE: Becca Rose Gold Highlighter

Overall, I was very impressed with this collaboration – everything was super pigmented and high quality. My least favourite (which I still like, btw) would be C’mon Sis lipstick because it settles into my fine lines way too much. If you can only grab a few things from the collection, I highly recommend the eyeshadow palette, the lip gloss and Boomin’ highlighter – those are definitely the most unique products.

I am planning on switching car insurance providers b/c: 1.) My car got stolen 01/25/2013 and I only had liability coverage (car was a 1996 Nissan Maxima) 2.) I was hit in October 2012 and it was not my fault and received settlement money b/c my car was deemed a total loss 3.) With that money I put a down payment on a used car this past weekend b/c now I truly had no car 4.) I now need full coverage to my current policy and replace the old car with the newer one but the 6-month premium is too high. While shopping around for car insurance, I found an auto quote that was A LOT more affordable than if I were to stick with my current insurance. With that being said, I had a lot of questions. I got into a car accident in May 2012 and it was my fault. No one was hurt and no air bags deployed. My insurance paid the damages. Now, if I cancel my policy with them, does that mean that I have to pay the insurance company back the money for the damages they covered to the other car? My other question is how much information do I disclose when applying for a new auto policy? I have of course included the at-fault accident in May and I also included the accident that was not my fault. Before these 2 accidents, I had one just one that was in a parking lot. The other driver and I were deemed both at fault, 50/50. Damage to his car was around $700. That was 3 years ago. The insurance company I was looking into said online to include accidents that were at least 51% your fault and accidents that weren't your fault too. Do I include this accident too even tho it was 50/50? My last question is about speeding and points. I my first speeding ticket in June 2012. I got a reduced fine and went to traffic school so it wouldn't show up and get a point. Once again, while looking at auto quotes, they asked if I had a moving violation which includes speeding. Because I went to traffic school and everything, do I tell them about that too? Despite the bad luck I've had this past year with my driving record, I only have one point. The 50/50 accident will be off because it's the 3rd year. I live in CA and got this info from the DMV website: The length of time depends on the severity of the offense. Most points (illegal turn, not making a complete stop, driving over the speed limit, etc.) and/or accidents will stay on your driver record for 36 months (3 years). So I'm leaving for Texas/Mississippi this summer and if I enjoy it down there I would be able to live with my sister and be able to go to school . . . but the thing is my parents don't know if I would be able to go to school down there without them signing the forms and what not since they live up here in Oregon . . . ok. So few days ago, I got into a car accident. I was driving down the highway simply just going straight. All of a sudden, this SUV crashed into me from my left lane and knocked off my side-view mirror & left some marks on my left front door. But she just asked if there was any injury & I said no then she just told me to exchange the insurance. How rude of her. Not to be mean, but I was little scared of the mexicans b/c the area I was in at the moment was really ghetto. so then I took some photos of the damages and exchanged the insurance company. The guy kept telling me in bad English that he was ahead of me so it's my fault. and I told him that I didn't even move & he was the one changed the lane without even checking to see if it was clear. but he couldn't really speak english well or he didn't even want to listen to me. so I left like that with my sideview mirror dangling next to me. *sigh* this isn't the end of the story yet. I claimed his insurance company which ive never heard of. They said that he's telling them I was the one who hit their car. which made NO SENSE. I even have a picture of their car bumper's mark on my side of the car door which proves that there's no way I hit their car and left a mark on mine and broke my own side view mirror and left THEM no damages. His car was clear with one inch scratch on the side which was made when he hit my car after bumping into me with his bumper and quickly turning back into his own lane. I can't even believe how he can lie about this kind of stuff. I feel so mad that there're ppl like him existing!!! It's so frustrating to see the liar defending himself. His Insurance company didn't even try to look at my car & told me that they are sorry & they can not help me b/c their customer said he didn't do it. What should I do in this situation? I have no witness, there wasn't any police there at the time because they wouldn't send me any which is SO WRONG of them to do. I want to sue 911 people. grr. Hello, I was recently a victim of a hit and run on a brand new 07 car. The back was smashed and the right back tire was sideways. The insurance company had me bring it to one of their authorized body shops. After 9k worth of damage, I received the car back. I was told the insurance adjusters told the shop not to replace certain parts etc. When I received the car, I brought it to the dealer to get it a wheel alignment. The mechanic came back and said the car could not be aligned and there was still major damage (subframe was bent - I could even see it). He also stated that the car will never drive the same after the accident even if the subframe is replaced and it would pull to one side and cause wear on the tires. Do I have the right to demand the car totalled from the insurance company? The car was 3 months old before the accident and I would want it in the same condition that I got it in. Hi there, My mom was rear ended by an uninsured motorist while driving my car. I have uninsured motorist coverage and AAA estimated the damage to be approximately $1000.
