of COURSE i can explain @milfhoward i would be happy to
This Ain't A Scene, Its An Arms Race was the lead single of ioh, and its literally about the concept of selling out from the cynical perspective of a persona who is aware they are selling out and is doing it intentionally.
the title and first verse are literally comparing the music scene to an arms race, wherein at least 2 parties are trying to arm themselves so they can defeat each other. war profiteering generally benefits from war and arms races because it doesnt matter whos winning if both sides are buying their weapons from you. ie "i am an arms dealer fitting you with weapons in the form of words/and i dont really care which side wins as long as the room keeps singing. that is the business im in/this aint a scene, its a goddamn arms race".
theres also the first prechorus of "im not a shoulder to cry on, but i digress/im a leading man, and the lies i weave are oh so intricate" wherein the persona is saying 'that image of me as someone who cares about what youre going through? its not real. but hey, whatever writes my cheques'. the song continues on to talk about how low the persona has gone in terms of their morals. "i wrote the gospel on giving up (you look pretty sinking) but the real bombshells have already sunk (primadonnas of the gutter)" basically saying 'i gave up my principles, but people have done this before me and looked better doing it' (and can i just say i love the double entendre of bombshell in this song). then theres "at night were painting your trash gold when you sleep. crashing not like hips or cars, no, more like parties." as in theyre taking the discarded parts of something, say an ideology or movement, and selling them to the public. theyre not crashing like a spectacle, but crashing as in theyre ruining something, or entering a space uninvited.
theres also the line "bandwagons full, please catch another" basically saying they are riding a bandwagon into the spotlight. and then theres the bridge, "all the boys who the dancefloor didnt love, and all the girls whos lips didnt move fast enough, sing until your lungs give out" all the guys (maybe in boybands) who were looking for fame but couldnt do the moves thatd get it, and all the female popstars who couldnt quite keep up with the backing tracks they lipsync to, join in the chorus.
so like. this is the lead single, right. a satirical song about doing anything for fame, sacrificing your artistic integrity, a song that is a commentary on selling out. in terms of metacommentary its outright talking about how they got big, and that means the alternative scene is going to be commodified and sold back to itself by people who dont really believe in it.
but they collabed with babyface and jay-z :/ and a hiphop producer could never make something meaningful :/ and it doesnt sound like pure hardcore anymore :/ i mean yeah it has a song about the trial of fred hampton junior and a song about police brutality and a song called "gay is not a synonym for shitty" and is actually more political than their previous 2 albums when you actually compare the topics and lyrics. but it sounds like r&b so :////
in conclusion i think fob fans during the prehiatus dont deserve rights.

consider buying me a ko-fi?
its deeply ironic that a sarcastic commentary on the phenomenon of selling out was immediately labelled as selling out because of antiblackness huh.
