Test of Time summary, part 3: The ones the drama missed

Min and Ala Berry, well... this is one of the screencaps I have of them, doing what they did best:

Ala was another faithful romance sim - she rarely even rolled multiple-woohoo wants. Min was also faithful, for years and years, until the day their eldest son got married and he randomly decided to kiss the bride's twin sister. I was appalled, but I don't know, he just got overcome by emotion? Ala was cool with it.

Ala died prematurely, of illness, while visiting one of their grown daughters at her own lot. Min did not deal with it well:

The bucket-wearing face of grief, y'all. At least it confirmed that my desperation-object defaults were working.

He did, eventually, resume his affair with his daughter-in-law's twin, a romance sim, and the two of them have had a long-term casual relationship ever since. He's the father of her only child (they never tried for baby, it was risky woohoo at work) and he's also fathered another child with another single-mother romance sim, bringing his tally to 13 children and well over 60 grandchildren. So far.

This file was saved as "dad not grandpa." He does have grandkids older than her, though.

He was an infuriating Sim in his youth - they both were, really, because they were three-bolters and both very playful, so I'd direct him to potty-train the toddler and her to feed the baby, and I'd come back to find the toddler sitting in a dirty diaper crying, the baby on the floor, and Min and Ala slow-dancing in the bathroom. I'd tell him to go unclog the toilet and then go check on the kids, and when I came back the toilet was still clogged and he was taking a bubble bath. You know the type. But he's turned out to be my longest-lived founder and I'll miss him when he finally goes, the horny old goat.

I mentioned at the end of my intro post that Geb and Nut Stone had a pretty interesting story. That might have been overstating things, but I was fond of them both. You can't really say the drama totally missed them, but their marriage survived - Nut, a romance sim, really would have been fine with an open marriage, but she was also totally faithful to Geb for her entire life - and despite Geb's affair they were very devoted to each other. After Nut's passing, Geb was actually faithful to her memory for ages. He kept rolling wants to go on dates or woohoo in bed, and I'd introduce him to single romance sims thirtyyears his junior, and he'd talk to them about his grandkids. (Then he spontaneously woohooed a married, pregnant Popularity sim. Brigid's daughter-in-law, in fact. I guess he just had a type.)

Ogun and Oya Burn didn't have the easiest time of things - their eldest son was killed by a feral Pond sister, and they both struggled with being knowledge sims before the rise of literacy - but they had a very solid marriage and both managed to die of old age at gold or platinum aspiration, which is an above-average fate for my founders. Better than Nut managed.

Ok - as I mentioned earlier, I’m sharing the “Opening Announcement Story” from the movie Singles. When I bid & ultimately won the auction for the Singles movie folder, I really had no idea what I’d be obtaining. When the package arrived, I immediately opened and slowly went through everything. One thing became very clear, the original owner had to of worked on the film. Maybe It’s The Only Way

Sometime in April, 1988, a friend of mine knocks on my bedroom window. He's got a huge grin on his face and he's giddily showing me a cassette tape. Once inside, he excitedly explains how he'd just been listening to, and recorded on said tape, a special radio preview of an upcoming release from Prince.

As I'm putting the tape in the player, I notice it's not a blank tape, but rather some kind of inspirational encouragement tape that he's used to record the preview over; this still makes me chuckle, a bit, when I recount this story.

The recording was awful, as he'd recorded material over the same tape several times. Doing this repeatedly would often cause the sound to be warbled and uneven when played back. He and I were all smiles while the DJ explained that the upcoming record, Lovesexy, would be released in the following weeks, and that this was a special preview only select radio stations would broadcast.

Once he was finished with the promotional material, the DJ played the opening twenty or so seconds of Alphabet St. My friend and I were smiling ear-to-ear, carefully listening to every second: this was obviously a different kind of style, but it was unmistakably Prince. I was awestruck. We must have re-played that little chunk of mastery a dozen times before my friend got concerned for the tape's integrity.

In the next few months, I would relocate to Minnesota to get closer to my paternal family. My cousin, a fellow Prince fan, called one afternoon to tell me that Prince would be kicking off the Lovesexy tour in September - IN Minneapolis - and that we should buy tickets early. I was VERY happy I spent that money.

The concert was totally epic. Not only were we seeing the first show of the Lovesexy tour in America, but we were seeing it in Prince's home state. I'd not a seen a Prince show before, and I haven't seen five better performances of ANY kind, since. Though The Revolution as a band weren't present, Dr. Fink was there, sporting his monogramed scrubs; he and Sheila E. actually shot some hoops on stage.

My favorite memory from the event was when a huge, pink, neon "something” was being lowered from the top of the venue. At first, one could only see the very bottom part. But, I knew exactly what it was. I turned to my cousin and practically screamed, "That says Yes!" She couldn't hear me, so I repeated, "THAT SAYS YES!" And, sure enough, what was being lowered was a huge, neon-pink heart with the word "Yes" inside of it - just like on the album.

I felt, right then, and have ever since, that I was able to kind of tap into that illusive Prince vibe, even for just those several, fleeting moments. Some of my most cherished memories of seeing live music come from that concert. In the years since, I've been able to collect a couple pieces of event shwag that I didn't have the money to purchase, back then.

Prince was the ultimate showman, even driving a white Thunderbird around the stage during the Alphabet St. rap. Hard to believe that show was thirty years ago, today. I sure miss him. And his millions of dedicated fans do, too. This is quite fitting, in my opinion.

Among his many artistic talents, Prince had a real knack for putting the right letters together… and making a better day.
