CHICANO ART MOVEMENT visits: “Traditions” 2024

First exhibit of the new year brings us Muzeo Museum and Cultural Center of Anaheim to view “Traditions: Honoring Heritage, Ritual and Family.”

Via its mission: “What exactly is a tradition? It can be a shared experience established by a family and community to be sustained over time or part of a larger cultural expression, the origins of which may be lost to the past and distant spaces. Either way, our vast Southern California landscape claims many of these traditions as its own. Traditions pays homage to the many familial and cultural facets of our diverse region.”

“This special collaborative exhibition, curated by Thinkspace Projects and Taloc Studios, celebrates the many ways we honor heritage, ritual, and family through the artistic expression of working SoCal artists.”

Within the “Traditions” exhibit, Anita was captivated by The Perez Bros and their newest painting titled “I Can Make You Dance.” The impressionist-style illustration with realistic qualities made it easy to picture myself within the crowd, dancing to the great tunes with lots friends & community members.

This exhibit runs from December 2, 2023 through February 25, 2024 and is located in the Muzeo Main Gallery.

Our last stop at the museum was the Carnegie Station to view “Muzeo Express a downtown Anaheim tradition that brings a whimsical holiday model train diorama to life in celebration of the season.” Anita loved all the details including one pre-historic reptile and pachyderm. The dioramas are on view from December 2, 2023 to January 28, 2024.

F CANCER

Opening on Saturday March 4th, 2023 at Thinkspace Projects in Los Angeles, California is the group exhibition "F CANCER."

Our guiding light and gallery co-founder Shawn Hosner was recently diagnosed with Stage 4 Breast Cancer and it has tossed our entire world upside down and into the air. She’s lovingly referred to as “gallery mom” and she means so much, to so many around the world.

Our fight has just begun and we want to be sure that every member of our extended family and all of our supporters around the world know of her fight and are sharing their good energy and prayers for her. We want to use her fight as a vehicle to also help others that are facing this horrible disease head on and fighting for their lives. 

All of us at the gallery have experienced the loss of friends and close loved ones over the years due to this dreaded disease and now that it has entered our home and is staring us directly in the face, we aim to do all we can to help spread awareness on early detection and what you can do to avoid this nightmare entering your life. F cancer!!!

A Celebration of Life: Shawn Mary Vezinaw Hosner

Vale Shawn Hosner, altruistic human and co-founder of @thinkspace_art ❤️💔

Shawn joined her ancestors on Wednesday, February 14th, after a courageous 15-month battle with stage 4 metastatic breast cancer. She was 57 years young and bravely faced the disease, passing on surrounded by her beloved circle of friends and family.

A CELEBRATION OF SHAWN’S LIFE will be held on Saturday, February 24, from 2 PM to 6 PM at Thinkspace Projects. This event is open to all, just like Shawn’s heart was.

I’m not the most comfortable or eloquent when it comes to difficult topics, especially on social media but the group show up @thinkspace_art this month, F🎀ck Cancer, is one that is very personal. . The folks at Thinkspace are family to me, to say I wouldn’t have an art career without them is not an understatement. I’ve been working with them for twelve years and they have always been wonderful, committed, loyal, helpful and unwavering in their dedication to the artists they work with. They are the standard with which I measure all other gallery relationships. . I was devastated when I learned that Shawn, partner in running the gallery, was recently diagnosed with cancer. She is the comfort, and solace of that place, your biggest and sweetest champion, if I’m ever overwhelmed at openings I seek out Shawn. The amount of folks that have come through that space, been loved and cared for by her is staggering, I am overwhelmed. . I am equally overcome as at the moment, both of my parents are also battling cancer. My Dad has been working through urinary tract cancer in various stages over the last 5 years and my mom was also recently diagnosed with breast cancer. Her chemo treatments start in a matter of days. . I am heartbroken, I am angry but I am also hopeful. I believe these three pillars in my life can fight and survive, they are strong and have many, many folks who love and support them. So, please go check out this show at Thinkspace, and if you are able, purchase some work, which will make a 25% donation to cancer research. New tribute to beloved matriarch of the Thinkspace family Shawn Hosner by Kar Part in the Fame Yard.

The Mangrove Refuge (The Vorasane Family and Friends; Gandy Beach circa 1980) by Michael Vasquez was created for the 2023 edition of SHINE Mural Festival in St. Pete, Florida.

The artist’s statement about the mural-

A displaced Lao family (and friends) find refuge and a moment of reflection amidst the mangroves of Tampa Bay’s Gandy Beach.

A 1978 Datsun 280Z serves as a centerpiece and point of pride, fusing together car culture and masculinity. Similar aspects of clothing and style signal togetherness, emulation, and a shared sense of identity—yet their solitary gazes set them apart from one another and allude to a deeper and more personal past, present, and future…

Vasquez is currently part of the group show TRADITIONS: Honoring Heritage, Ritual and Family at Muzeo in Anaheim, California. The show is curated by Thinkspace and Tlaloc Studios and is on view until 2/25/24.

I usually only throw away my brushes when I can absolutely find no use for them. Like this Princeton Artist Brush (Golden Taklon, Short Handle) that was likely a size Round 6 that I often get from Blick Art Materials. I've worn out the original bristle of this brush over time, but the thinned and sharper end now serves a new purpose – like when I need to target fine lines like these in my new oil painting 'Wayland Girl'.

This new work is for the '15 Years of Thinkspace' anniversary group show that will be held at Thinkspace Projects this Saturday, 11th Jan, and with all custom made wood panels sponsored by Trekell Art Supplies.

From @thinkspace_art : “We’re proud to share that our family of creatives are coming together for a very special group show, that will help shine a light on topics currently at the forefront of everyone’s thoughts. Mother Earth: We Are All One will bring together 63 artists, all of whom have been asked to work within the same space confines of 12×12 inches (30×30 cm) and to take into consideration the general state of our Mother Earth and how much we have scarred her for our own gain and how many species of animals have gone extinct due to our constant advancement and taking over of lands near and far. We’ve asked them all to also consider how the current pandemic has so clearly illustrated that we are all in this together, and when we work together as one, anything is possible.
