Four ruts a year - that is the normal cycle for an alpha. However, it seems that having lived a long time - and having substained himself on an unhealthy amount of repressants - Jing Yuan's ruts rarely come around but, thanks to the minor blessings of life, they are not unpredictable.

One of the first signs of Jing Yuan's oncoming rut, if they do not look at the calendar, is the quiet way Yanqing's articles of clothings disappear into the aether. Just a cloak here, a pair of shorts there - all old clothes that Yanqing does not wear anymore but cannot bear to part with – nothing too much out of the ordinary.

When he was younger, Yanqing had always made a hunt out of them: tiptoeing around and lying in wait until he could pounce onto the clothing thief.

And Jing Yuan would always catch him, as he always does when Yanqing, whether he is a decade old or has lived a full century, flings himself at him. Then Jing Yuan would carry him back to where his lost clothings are, into a nest soft with affection.

But nowadays, when Yanqing realizes his clothes have been spirited away again, he does not go on a hunt for them anymore. Instead, he files in a form of absence to be sent to Qingzu. And he ties up the ongoing work that he still has until the most urgent ones are completed and those that can wait tidied up to be tackled later on.

Then he packs up a bundle of clothes and necessities and moves into Jing Yuan's room. And there, he stays, for the next couple of days until Jing Yuan's rut passes.
