Transformers EarthSpark Season 2 Spoilers

If I had to describe S2A in one word, it would be: Disappointing.

Others have said this before me, but if you were a fan of S1 this most definitely isn't the show for you anymore.

S2A is so far inferior to S1 in every conceivable way. The animation, the characters, the story, it all just feels so half-assed. Every single interesting concept S1 introduced, S2A either mangled beyond belief or flat-out erased from existence.

The few new interesting things that do come up in S2A don't last long and/or are underdeveloped.

Tensions between humans and Cybertronians? Never mentioned. All the racism died with Mandroid and GHOST, I guess.

The Terrans' connection to Quintus Prime? Pfft, you're still on that? It's all about the Quintessons now, keep up nerd!

Starscream's development and start on the road to recovery from trauma? Gone. He's back to being the villain now for no reason whatsoever. He murders two actual children. What, did you think we were still doing that silly nuance thing from S1? Lol, sucks to be you.

The ongoing theme about the Transformer War not being as black and white as history would have people believe? Ummm, ackshually, the Decepticons are inherently evil and irredeemable. The Autobots are saints and have never done anything wrong or questionable, ever. Ignore the prison complex from last season that performed unethical experiments on prisoners of war. Y'know that same one that the Autobots knew about and supplied with Decepticon prisoners.

Spitfire and Aftermath are interesting in theory, but S2A doesn't really do anything with them besides making them the generic Evil Twin characters to Twitch and Jawbreaker respectively. And then Starscream murders them for his evil masterplan, which feels like a colossal waste.

I've been saying since S1 that it would be interesting to have a Terran actually choose the Decepticons over both the Autobots and the Maltos. It would've been a neat way to explore the family dynamic the 'Cons have compared to the Maltos and maybe show that just because a family is different from yours, maybe not as physically affectionate or as instantly harmonious, doesn't mean it's worse. We had a good start with Aftermath and Breakdown but that never really goes anywhere before Starscream does a Fuck Them Kids.

The Decepticons are just evil again now. Great. I guess we're completely throwing the "history isn't black-and-white" thing out of the window, huh? That whole thing where it was implied the Decepticons were rising up against an unjust system a la Aligned continuity and IDW? We kind of had a very significant confrontation between Megatron and Shockwave about that in that one episode that even explicitly referenced IDW? Or how about the whole "This is not freedom" plot line about how mayyybe throwing every Decepticon in the slammer forever might be, just might be, bad? We had a whole episode about that? Soundwave was in it?

Nah, 'Cons are unambiguously evil. Always. Especially that no-good Starscream. "What Dwells Within" and "The Last Hope, Part 2" might as well have never happened, because Starscream sure as hell doesn't act like they did. He barely even interacts with Hashtag. "Come on, did you expect Starscream to be a good guy now?" No bitch, I expected believable character development. I find it hard to believe that the same Starscream who saved Hashtag from the Cybertronian equivalent of a vampire, at risk to his own life, and then told her to take care of herself as a good-bye would just suddenly go back to the same moustache-twirling evilness we'd be expecting from G1 Starscream. You expect me to buy that this guy is the same Starscream as the one who showed up with the entire cavalry to save the world in the S1 finale?? Why go through the trouble of giving Starscream an entire episode going into his trauma and abuse and learning to be better if this is all it amounts to in the end??? At least show us how it happened? What made Starscream suddenly completely regress like that??? I don't know and the way it's going I don't think EarthSpark is all that interested in explaining it.

The Maltos remain a criminally underdeveloped hive mind. And no, I don't consider adding even more powers to their arsenal character development. Robbie and Mo still don't have any friends outside of their siblings and this season did nothing to change my mind on the cybersleeve connection being borderline creepy and making the characters co-dependent. "The Butterfly Effect" basically showed us all the reasons why having your siblings in your head 24/7 with no way to turn it off would actually suck. Cybersynching is so obviously combining with a new coat of paint and it's not even used or utilized that much in this batch.

We did not need the Quintessons in this season. At all. They added nothing except implying that Quintus Prime is shady af. Which, we been knew? The whole of "Prime Time" is literally Quintus torturing a little girl for being upset her big brother is sick and probably dying. If you wanted to explore Quintus through one of his creations seeing him in a much less benevolent light, well, how do I put this? There were two whole new characters added this season you could've done this with. Aftermath and Spitfire not being in the "We Love Quintus Prime" club together with the rest of the Terrans would make sense, since they're far more rebellious and anti-authoritarian. That would've given them something interesting to do besides being minor nuisances to the Delightful Maltos from Down the Lane.

I've heard that EarthSpark isn't doing well both in ratings and in toy sales and after that first batch I can see why.

The show is not all bad, but legit none of these characters are developed enough or distinct enough that I could see a kid wanting a toy of them. And that goes double for older fans.

The writers messed up big time and I honestly don't know if I'm gonna stay and see if they fix it in S2B.

After seeing Bond look like a lion, Anya asks Bond to try to mimic other animals to varying degrees (Elephant Bond was not a success, while Giraffe Bond was... 🤭😂🤣 You get idea...!! 😁)

After that, Yor fixes Bond's hair brushing him and seeing how happy he looks, Anya wants to get her hair brushed as well...!! 💗

This just warms my heart to the highest degree...!! 💗🥹💗 (I am loving all this BONDing time between the three of them...!! 💗😭💗)

And that was Mission 87, a fun return after a four week wait that honestly felt like forever!! Seriously, I don't know why, but the wait for this chapter really felt like we waited TWO WHOLE MONTHS instead of just one...!! 😵

Besides my horrible sense of time, this chapter was an absolute delight...!! 😊 From Sylvia and Fiona's interaction to Yor and Anya's mother daughter time (with Bond), I enjoyed it a ton...!! 💗😁💗

I'm excited to see what's next for our favorite manga / anime family, the Forgers and what Endo is gonna put them through!! 😁

It's about an undead guy who meets an unlucky girl that causes bad things to happen whenever someone touches her... The undead guy (Andy) wants the the unlucky girl (Fuuko) to give him THE GREATEST DEATH EVER, and then their journey begins...!!

I don't know if it'll be everyone's cup of tea (especially from just that short synopsis that I just gave 😅), but I think that if y'all just give it a shot and stick with it for a bit, you'll (hopefully) be enthralled by the amazing cast of characters, their development and the crazy world that they live in...!! 😁 (Or you could also just watch the anime for it that's coming out in October, but I still suggest reading as well...!! 😊👍)

HENRY BOWERS ANALYSIS!!

btw this is long as shit as it was a ramble to my friend on discord. this is how i interpreted henry, not including the obvious parts of his personality like the racism and much more. thats obvious and everyone knows that, heres something i picked up as i love psychology! i also have a patrick one if you guys would like!

so henry is such an interesting character!

it's so obvious he replies on being perceived as masculine and strong because even though he hates his dad he still wants butch's approval and to finally be good enough.

it's part of why he's such a fucked up person and bullies others because it makes him feel stronger and powerful which is something he craves since he is beat at home which makes him feel weak.

bowers gang is a very interesting group of boys, henry is friends with them cause they're kind of like him. we dont get a ton of insight on victor and belch but we know they just think its all in good fun, they dont get as much of a kick out of bullying as patrick and henry. but more or less they're all pretty similar, which henry thrives on. it's obvious he doesnt rely on them or gets emotional with them, belch and victor seem to want henry to but he screams at them every time so they're used to just ignoring the abuse henry goes through.

How henry has a problem with anyone who isnt like himself is an extremely deep rooted problem and the one to blame for this is butch, he beats henry over anything he can, even just little reasons. butch definitely puts some gender roles into henry's head and told him to "stop having a smart mouth" (a reason he hates richie.)

The reason pennywise chose to possess henry is pretty apparent, while it could've gone with patrick i feel like there isnt a lot in patricks mind to break to make him become a mind slave, which is why he just killed patrick instead, using his corpse to manipulate henry. while patrick can be strong he's so mentally fucked up with so many disorders he would've probably just thought his family dying was funny. which makes him a not so great target since he wont be broken like henry could. Henry was having problems at school, home and in his head, there were still parts of him that could be broken as he was not past the point of no return. deep down henry had a lot of fears, one of those fears even being patrick, patricks killing of animals and his own little brother scared henry. while henry could only wish his dad dead, patrick was able to make things like that happen and get away with it and have no guilt, even brag about it.

Henry was still a fairly normal kid until the rock war, thats when i believe he started to go crazy and when pennywise started to get a hold on henry as patrick died shortly after. While henry is scared of patrick that doesnt mean they werent friends, patrick was part of henrys routine, i think having a bit of a routine kept henry sane but the clown started to disrupt that and put henry on edge.

It continues to add shit onto henry's plate to break him. A friend goes missing, he's continually beat at home and it's getting worse. He gets embarrassed in front of his friends, just more and more is added on.

He's then forced to kill his father and then his two closest friends, then made to go back home with evidence planted in his room that he killed all the missing kids. usually he would end up in jail but pennywise knows it will need henry again so it has henry sent to a mental hospital where he endures more abuse and never recovers from having his mind broken as 1, the staff are awful 2, pennywise visits him every night in the form of his dead friends. He mostly takes the form of victor as victor was henry's best friend. the movie isnt fully accurate and uses patricks corpse only when it was actually victor who meant the most to henry, patrick is used as a scare factor.

Although patrick is the one who stuck around to the end and got the same kick out of making people suffer like henry did. he always supported crazy ideas unlike belch and victor. grief is one of henry's huge motivators and pennywise took advantage of that as grief is one of its specialties

I actually saw that twitter poll, I believe it was made by my friend ohsupernaturall and I did ask myself the same question you're asking now-which I would've rather seen discussed? The thing is to answer it, perhaps we have to look at it from two sides-maybe in a way through the shipper lenses and then again through the character and more specifically Bellamy-lenses.

I think that if Clarke knew the torture he went through in Mount Weather, it would've benefited bellarke's relationship more and that makes sense because him being sent there was something they were both involved into together and one decision (hers and his because he did volunteer to go inside) results into his torture and everything that happened to him inside. I believe it was necessary for them to have discussed it and I am really angry that never happened. They had a lot of things to talk about that they never did but this and Bellamy limping through the forest trying to get her in 3x02 (which was also an option in the poll if i remember correctly) were the two things I am so, so angry about. I think that had they talked about it, they would've been brought even closer. Moreover it would've mended the anger in Bellamy's heart over her leaving.

Now if it comes to Bellamy actually like actually telling her about this I'm not sure that he would've, simply because I think he knew that her finding out about this would make her feel even worse about the decisions they've made when it came to Mount Weather. He's selfless and we know that's one of his greatest qualities but he's also quiet in his suffering and punshes himself over and over again internally, so he wouldn't just go and say-Hey you know what happened to me in mount weather? They chained me, cleaned me up like an animal and hung me upside down. I only freed myself by killing a man and then meeting his child.

It just not Bellamy. If she had ever found out, I imagine it happening through someone else-Monty, Raven, Jasper, I don't know who but not through him and that would've made her even sadder imo.

Now when it comes to the b.eating, I actually did vote for that. Perhaps it's because I've written a few fanfics in an alternate universe where Clarke takes care of his bruises after O,ctavia beats him and I'm a bit biased but I feel like I really wanted this to happen. I wanted Clarke to be angry at O,ctavia about it, I wanted her to take care of him and make sure he knew he didn't deserve that. I think that I prefer this happening more because it would've opened the door to discuss Bellamy more as a character and actually would've extended the discussion on the Blake siblings relationship as a whole instead of the stupid linear-he was bad in s3, he killed L,incoln, he's to blame and he deserved it and it's not abuse (coming from the CLs).

Yes, he did it because he thought he deserved it, he did it for her and he'd do anything for her. In fact, I'm pretty sure that since it got so bad, he would've let her kill him and we knew she wanted to do it but tried very hard not to, we saw this in season 4 and she had said it herself. Anyway, I was doing that gif today from 3x13 and I noticed how he stared at the stick O,ctavia was holding when they were by the fire in the beginning of the episode and how he looked just for a second there afraid and then closed off as if he knew that she may try to hurt him again and I wondered-would he let her do it? The answer to which would probably be yes, he would-he'd do anything if it meant helping her and I feel like I wanted Clarke to talk to him about this more, I wanted her to tell him he didn't have to do this, he doesn't need to take it on his shoulders, all of it.

I do like that she talked to him a little about Lncoln's death not being his fault later on in that episode but I feel like she should've been outraged by what O,ctavia had done the same way he was outraged when it came to so many things concerning Clarke starting from season 1 going onto season 6 things like her possibly drinking the poison moonshine when they tried to have peace talks with Lxa or his desperation about her leaving by the end of s2 and trying to talk her out of it or how he f*cking saved her life in 6x10 and then was mad when she was ready to go back in Sanctum and pretend she was still josephine and that was talking about with the other characters too (when Gabriel said Bellamy wouldn't like this).

I know people here will say but Clarke has been angry when it came to him being stupid too like in 4x03 when she said He will be inside once they closed the door or when she wrote down his name because she believed he deserved it or when she saw him chained by Roan in s4 and yes I do agree with all those things, which is why I wished for that moment to have happened too, for them to have had the time to talk about this abuse and for Clarke to be angry at O,ctavia, to even be protective of him, to not want to leave him alone. And that would've helped the blakes relationship as well imo. Because the whole time Clarke's relationship to Bellamy's relationship with his sister has been *I offer quiet support and try to give him some reassurance but stay out of it* when I feel like sometimes he needed to be grabbed and shaken hard and told that no, he's not doing something bad by turning his back on his sister, by leaving her on the dropship in season 6, by telling her she isn't his responsibility anymore. And he shouldn't have had to get there alone let alone the fact that it should've happened 3 seasons earlier. Their relationship was left in a stagnant point after season 1, I thoroughly agree with that.

I can also talk a lot about O,ctavia coming to terms that what he did to her happened through Hope and there are good and bad things about this but that's a whole other subject.

Favorite debunked fan theory? Qrowdad no question. I kinda believed it at the time, and the way CRWBY have backed away from it is absolutely hilarious especially if they make poly STR real and Summer/Qrow is one of the only nonromantic relationships on the team. Doubly so if Rosebird Parents comes real.

Favorite Ruby ship? HARGH this one has been rapidly changing for me over the last couple months. i love NND and have for a very long time, it might still be my answer, but i've fallen hardcore for gemstones lately too. Favorite soundtrack moments? all the RWBY soundtracks since i got back into the show have released either on my birthday or a few days before and i don't notice them until my birthday. that's been incredible for me, it feels like casey is giving me a present lol.

Favorite visuals/shots? Penny against the moon in V8 i think is the best-looking shot in the show. i also love the moment when the dust clears in blake + yang vs adam, it looks perfect. all of Tea Amidst Terrible Trouble looks amazing, it's the best episode imo. the fight animation in everyone vs ironwood is so smooth and i love it, also crescent rose during the first 10 seconds or so of ruby vs the cat in v9c10. the look ruby gives neo at the end of the fight is really impressive to me too - they managed to animate her expression subtly while giving it as much emotion as a real actor would have. that look says a thousand words of concern and worry and understanding and it's so impressive that they pulled it off.

Best idea for a RWBY crossover? RWBY X Homestuck fighting game. I will sacrifice both Miles Luna and Andrew Hussie to whatever god can make this happen.

Most nostalgic part of Poser animation? i love the way yang's semblance hair looked in the old days. the maya hair is cool too but there's something about how it moved in poser.

Favorite location? visually, the house in TATT. emotionally, RNJRWYOQ's house in mistral still feels so comfy to me, i want everyone to move there at the end of the show.

Theory for the Relic of Choice? it allows you to pinpoint a choice in your life and visualize what would've happened if you'd chosen differently. i don't think it lets you actually go back and change it, though - just take that into account for any future choices.

Theory for the Relic of Destruction? i don't have a serious one but i do think it'd be really funny if it's just like. A Really Good Normal Sword with a spirit that tells you to Kill

Favorite Weiss ship? Bee's Schnees and particularly freezerburn. i'm not much of a fan of bumblebee honestly but freezerburn and monochrome carry bee's schnees hardcore.

Characters you want to see redeemed? i would say emerald but she's hopefully not in question at this point. honestly i think all of the villains should get a genuine chance at redemption but my next answer is definitely Neo. my perception of purpose is that, when your purpose is fulfilled and you ascend the normal way (unlike Ruby), your new purpose has to do with bettering your old purpose. whether you had ineffective means or insufficient ends, your target is going to be the same. so i think regardless of whether she comes back as herself or someone else, neo's new purpose will be about ruby. this could be a really cool spin on redemption imo.

Favorite trans character headcanon? urghhh so many characters are so trans in this show. trans ruby is near and dear to my heart though. but trans weiss also kicks ass

What would be your Aura color/color theme? i think it would be pink and green. which one my aura would be idk but they're my two favorite colors and i like how they look together

Favorite voice performance? Lindsay Jones in v9 especially 9x7 through 9x9. they did an incredible job of letting Ruby's emotions pour through and i love how gravelly she got. i've never heard a high-pitched gravelly voice before and it sounds amazing

Favorite opening to sing along to? Trust Love. v7 also has the best intro sequence overall and i will die on this hill

17. any headcanons you're attached to?

BOY DO I HAVE SOME HEADCANONS IM ATTACHED TO. First off this post is required reading. its over a year old and its all stuff i stand by pretty strongly in regards to vylad. lets just start there.

ok hmmmmmmm see now this is hard for me because you could ask me about any specific like character or location or concept within mcd and i could give you headcanons for them immediately i have too many options. here's what I'm going to do I'm going to open the aphmau wiki and randomize a page on the mcd characters section and whatever I land on is what I'm going to talk about here i go.

I GOT KENMUR OK ITS KENMUR TIME. Well first off he's bi4bi and t4t with emmalyn so jot that down. Emmalyn is more on the history and literature side of things, but Kenmur is much more on the science side, he likes reverse-engineering things and he likes understanding how things work. He doesn't usually get as visibly excited over findings as Emmalyn does, but they are still very much equal in nerdiness.

Despite him going to the Irene Dimension, we don't get a lot of his thoughts about the weird stuff that happens to/around him in canon. I think he'd be very interested in Irene's Dimension, not necessarily because it's Irene's, but because it's a weird weird place with weird rules about how you enter and leave and how time flows while you're there and that's fascinating to him. He would've loved talking about the process of Zoey's portal activation with her if she wasn't so cagey about it.

I'm not big on the whole "Sasha was his fiancee thing" but I do like the idea of them being friends :) And I ESPECIALLY like the idea of him trying to figure out how to cope with the fact that a lot of the people he knew and grew up with turned into Shadowknights. Sasha, Laurance, even Hayden's guard, these were people he knew who all just died around him, some of which becoming much worse people for it. Shadowknights are so poorly understood that nobody (not even Shadowknights!) seems to really understand how it works or why it happens, and that frustrates him deeply. I think he'd be very interested in studying Shadowknights, but also feels very weird about asking Laurance to essentially be his lab rat. So he just quietly makes notes whenever he notices something weird and moves on. World's First Shadowknight Scholar!

27. what's something really interesting that you wished canon decided to explore more? alternatively, what's something interesting that you wished the fandom acknowledged more?

this question is fun because its actually two questions in one which means i get to spend more time talking heehee. there's pleeeenty of stuff in canon, not to go Kenmur-mode but we still barely have anything on how Shadowknights actually work aside from "you died oh noooo now you have to kill someone." This is not helped by how much conflicting information we get.

We ALSO also don't get a lot on how the magicks system works??? Oh everyone has magicks but not really but also kinda but you have to find it and some abilities are passive (Kiki can talk to animals all the time) but also most are active (KC animates dolls, gets tired when she uses it too much, its a big ordeal she has to work up to) and also some are so well-documented that there are entire categories for them (WHAT THE HELL IS BARRIER MAGICKS. WHAT DO YOU MEAN THATS JUST A WELL-KNOWN THING. EVERYONE ELSE HAS UNIQUE ABILITIES AND THEN THERES JUST "BARRIER MAGICKS" WHAT DOES THIS MEAN) and also maybe magicks are passed on by blood but also maybe not and also theres WITCHES now fuck you. And they hate magicks users for noooo reason despite "magick" being incredibly poorly defined at best. What is a curse? How do potions work??? Cursed Objects???? Cursed AMULETS????? WHY????????????? At least they tried to explain things about Shadowknights, when it came to magicks they just fucking gave up. I know its like this because they just used magicks as the macguffin of the week and had no plans on actually developing how it works, but i would literally kill to see plans on how they intended for this to work.

Interesting things Fandom should acknowledge is also fun. There are many. There are so many. I think the politics side of mcd is VERY interesting and very rarely looked at by fans, which is shocking to me considering how central it is to mcd's plot. Because despite the title of "Lord" there IS no active monarchy in Ru'aun, and that's BECAUSE of Irene (which was incredibly based of her), which changes the definition of Lord entirely. ITS REALLY NEAT!! O'khasis has a council!! Who the fucks on it? I don't know!!! But they have a council!!! Isn't that exciting?? This is not a joke I mean this so genuinely. Do you ever wonder if maybe the High Priest is on that council and thats why Zane got the job. Do you ever wonder if there's a reason someone so young and literally THE SON OF THE LORD got put into a position so early? Do you think having that extra vote on Garte's side helped things crumble at a quicker rate than it had been previously?? I do. I wonder these things. And you should too. please.

And SPEAKING of Irene being incredibly based, she did in fact do some things that are incredibly based!!! I know most people like to write her as a Secretly Malevolent God™, which like fair whatever I like to give her some evils too, but I really wish people would take more of a look at what was established about her in S1. There is a reason she is worshipped so widely by the people of Ru'aun and it's because she Literally Is a hero of the people. I think people are generally blinded by how she was portrayed in MCD S3 and in Mystreet that they forget that she was a person for a very long time before she lost it. Go back and look at some of the earlier Irene lore!!! I promise its much more complex and fun than "oooo your goddess is secretly evil and was never good and there is no hope or joy in the world ooooo."

L&Co ep 6. I am going to start this by saying something nice.

I do think they're doing a good job of showing George feeling isolated. It's tough to do when you squash the timeline so much - he doesn't have months of grievances, they've only worked together for a few weeks - but being able to move outside Lucy's pov allows the show to emphasize it. Tbh George is head and shoulders coming out of this show looking the best because he's not being filtered through Lucy's uncharitable pov.

Ok starting the episode now, let's see if I find anything else nice to say.

"We found Annabel Ward's murderer." I mean, you cheerfully walked into his deathtrap and then clocked it after the attempted murder but ok.

Oh man I didn't think about the fact that Lockwood can now see a death glow every time he leaves through the front door. And after the last book, also one in his kitchen. The poor kid cannot lose his talent soon enough. Might be good for his mental health.

I imagined the skull's grotesque distorted faces more as the result of taking a human face off its underlying bone structure and then squashing it behind glass (like smushing your face against a window but worse because #boneless) but evil smoke is probably easier to animate. Also the former might stray into cartoonish territory and this show is far less interested in being funny.

Well we haven't gotten any colorful death threats yet but we have gotten a 'let your dipshit friends die already' so maybe they haven't entirely nuked the skull's personality. Well played on manipulating him right back though Lucy.

TV Bickerstaff made his own sources by killing his patients? Suppose that's faster than robbing graves (although messier because you have to do all the defleshing yourself), but then why was he robbing graves? Unless I guess he killed them, pretended they died of natural causes, and then went back to the graves after the burial. Personally I think harvesting old sources is the better option, then the visitors don't hate you personally. The bone glass spirits all seemed relatively chill just kind of bummed out.

Except, hang on, he couldn't have harvested these ones for the bone glass, because then their ghosts wouldn't be here.

Shame they did the dead patients and not the rat ghost, that would've been fun to see animated (but probably a bitch to do which presumably is why they changed it)

It's odd to hear them consistently using 'he' for the skull already. In the books they tend to switch between gendered and it pronouns for all the ghosts until the very end when everyone but Lockwood switches to he/him exclusively. Stroud is pretty deliberate about characterization via pronoun use in both his series I've read, so this seems a bit hasty.

A golden sword is actually really interesting because rapiers are meant to be used against ghosts and gold does nothing to them. But gold plate (I assume, a fully gold sword would bend or break immediately) is delicate and would get scratched to hell immediately if you crossed blades with another living human. A golden rapier would be a great toy for some rich bastard who wants to show off how much they don't need to use it. It's an odd thing to give a powerful person's hired enforcer.

Salt sprinklers… having a ghost alarm is actually a great bit of worldbuilding. I was going to say regular fire sprinklers should work just as well since ghosts hate running water, but salt is easier to clean up. Less property damage. Wonder what the nightclub blue light is for. Does it make visitors show up better?

It's actually been with me my whole life i was a HUGE transformers kid with the first two live action movies and tfp, i just kind of fell off when i started using internet much more. His death was stupid but also not like, getting rid of another bg character is that much of a deal, even though it's insane how much personality and story he was given as a one-off character lmao.

My thoughts on Russian Doll: Rewatch Edition [Part 1]

I had forgotten how unexpected and jumpscare-y the first time Nadia dies is.

RUTH MY DARLING. HOW I MISSED YOU.

I could be at the best party of my life, surrounded by the people I love and who love me, and yet I would spiral into a sadness dissociation. Nadia is just like me fr. (I know the trauma was very recent but you get what I'm saying)

Love that she still thinks it's the drugs and not just the misfortune of being the victims of universe's educating spree.

My favourite thing about Nadia, as a protagonist, is that she's not a saint, she's not likeable all the time. She has a lot of fuck ups, even if she's suffering at the whims of the universe. The way Nadia is slowly being consumed by the grief of this reality of hers. Seeing John have his heartbroken again and again. It's just. Your grief just doesn't affect you, it affects everyone, it consumes everything around you. (I wish I could articulate my thoughts and feelings better. I struggle to even form coherent sentences these days)

It's about community and love and connections. And how we as social beings need other people to survive and thrive and be safe. In every way, the physical, emotional, we need people. We cannot be loners. That's not a viable way of living. The moral of the story is let others help you, believe that the world is a better place because you're in it.

Not just that but a sub plot (the building block to the major plot in S2) that no matter how much you suppress your inner child, no matter how much you try to forget them, they're still within you. You cannot take care of your present self or improve things for your future self until you acknowledge the child.

It's just, how beautifully it is shown the importance of human connection, loving and caring for others, why it is the utmost responsibility as humans to keep each other safe and well. Humans didn't come all this way without that love and compassion, and this recent trend of hyper-individuality has really fucked us over.

lmao i don't think you know what you're asking for (i have SO many opinions), but here are the highlights:

honestly season 4 felt like they wanted martin to be the main character of the season but needed jon around picking up marks, so jon's part of the season is just...unfocused? nothing he does really accomplishes anything (other than getting him more marks) for at least the first half of the season

i hate how this season keeps trying to convince me that jon is as bad as (or worse than) daisy? it makes sense for basira's character to argue that, but melanie siding with basira and daisy makes no sense. like, i'm sorry, i'm supposed to think jon taking statements from five (5) people is somehow less excusable than daisy being a cop who commits so much extra-judicial murder because she's sowwy now 😔 (i know this gets walked back in season 5 but it's still bad)

EVERYTHING about how melanie was handled bothers me. everything. she's furious at jon for cutting the bullet out of her leg, but still buddies up with basira. she goes from being passionate but abrasive to, well, talking like she's trying to get an A+ in therapy. her cutting out her eyes was great, but the way it was framed as, like, self-harm that jon encouraged instead of functionally an animal chewing off its leg to escape a trap is...weird. also there's a part where she says she's learning to be more open about things in therapy and like?? i'm sorry, melanie had problems in earlier seasons, but failing to speak up was not one of them

peter's death!!! if he was going to die from resisting jon's compulsion, it should've been before he spilled his entire life story. sorry, but i don't believe "telling elias's plan" is where he would've drawn the line. he basically just died to avoid giving the audience a spoiler 🙄 (tbh i think jon should've killed him on purpose but there were other options that would've made more sense than what happened)

ok all that said, i do actually like a lot of season 4 lmao. peter's one of my favorite characters, and i love how he and martin play off each other. martin's increasing isolation this season is done so well! and the parts with elias in prison are just fun. i do like him being a puppetmaster from jail even if i don't always like the execution. also elias and peter are made for each other.

I get that talking quickly is supposed to prevent people from thinking about the things she's saying, but as someone who did debate in high school, I was taught to process things going by at this speed. i think it's worth remembering that a lot of what LO does is purely performative. any attempt at wanting progressive politics or wanting queer people to stop hating on themselves is empty noise, they don't mean anything. her actions speak louder than words and through those we know already that LO does not care about LBGT+ people, only cis lesbians and only as long they satisfy her on the way she wants them to be.

that line about liking serial killers and liking villains is nothing but more examples of her overcompensating for liking sadistic cruel murderers and bending backwards to try to still make them the heroes. it's not what she really thinks, but it works to come across the idea of how despicable villain liking looks to her. it's there to make you forget about all the way that LO has liked and written character who have done far worse than many villains.

Dreamworks, What is Happening?

Now DreamWorks hasn't always had the best track record, let's just be honest. But recently, it's been telling that they and Universal have been in a slump in terms of their decisions, no matter what type of those decisions are. You all already know how Ruby Gillman left a bad taste in my mouth, considering the writing could have been a straight shot into something emotionally investing, with Chelsea being redeemed and finding a family in the Gillman’s after being alone for so long. But they didn't do that because we just had to have an irredeemable villain, because it worked with Jack Horner, why not do the same trick and dance with Chelsea/Nerissa? The unfortunate truth is that this just left a bad taste in a lot of people's mouths. Now, while some did not mind this, let's just be honest and say it would have been best if they went with the more emotionally investing ending to the movie. But that's only part of the problem when you have the fact the marketing (which wasn't much at all either) spoiled the twist. Now I knew going into this movie Chelsea was gonna end up a villain, no surprise there, but the thing that made this movie crash and burn for me was the fact that this spoiled twist did not lead to anything much more. Sure you spoiled the twist either way, but with Chelsea being redeemed, you would at least have a very emotionally driven ending, and a positive message that's anti-war, anti-prejudice, and shows the value in one young woman showing compassion to another in hard times, and making her see that things don't have to be the way they are if they truly made an effort to change things by sticking together. I mean hell, my rewrite ends with them becoming practically sisters. But no, there is no touching ending where the girl who was alone with her revenge driven mother for most of her life, before that mother died trying to get a weapon to wage war again, finally got a friend in another girl who, even as she was trying to kill her, knew on the inside she was still just a child who's been through a lot and wasn't going to let her become a monster because of the conflict between their people. There was no ending where the grandma who thought of another species as monsters finally sees how wrong she's been and wants to make things right. No. It ends with an even dumber twist where the girl is actually the mother, and she's put in a cage and mermaids are actually just evil creatures. Big victory for nuanced writing, eh? And to make matters worse, universal decided it would be best to put this movie out during the time when spider-verse, elemental, transformers, Indiana Jones, and the flash were all also playing in theaters. You know what would have been a smart time to release the movie? September 1, no kids movies were releasing in theaters at that point (seriously go check) so maybe while ruby wasn't the pinnacle of writing, it at least would not have been stacked against spider-verse and elemental especially, thus you'd have a fun movie for the family and maybe it could have at least made its budget back. But no, release it around the two other animated movies that are obv gonna be more beloved by audiences bc they have arguably more stellar writing, and are obv gonna be suggested to more audiences bc they stuck with the viewers in a positive way, meanwhile the only way ruby stuck with viewers in a negative way with people thinking “well that was lame, I would have liked for Chelsea to be redeemed and become genuine friends with ruby, would have made a sweet and sincere ending.” Now this obv isn't the case for everyone, but come on, most of the audience would've probably left the movie on a more chipper note if this happened instead. So, take marketing that spoils the movie and isn't very prominent either way, writing that's about as bland as you can imagine, and a release date that can be described as stuck between a rock and a hard place, you have a box office flop that made not even 50 mil throughout it's entire run.
