As we sit on the back porch, my Grandma told me one time of many, the times of the serpents den. She raised her arms in the air and swung her feet back & forth in her chair. 'Spring is the time! The serpent of old emerges and our ancestors gather from outside of us. The shadow and the self join. We are the snake and with each generation we shed and renew.' My eyes widened as she continued... 'All the children would gather sticks and pile them outside of the tents. The elders would take the sticks and hit them against the ground while stomping in a squatted formation. It was like someone playing drums. All were in unison, all played the same song, and the snakes were helpless against its hypnotizing magic. As the snakes begin to come out of the ground the elders emerged from the woods. The women started to fill bowls with milk and lay bread out along the trees. All came together like a dance, one step after another, no questions, no stopping, every spring for thousands of years. The children sat outside usually but some would peek in and some were brought in of certain ages in groups. I remember the first time stepping into the tent. There were men and women of many races; Caucasian, Native, and African. In these times it was said to be uncommon for such a gathering publicly but the secret lives of people are only known to themselves and their kin. History books tell lies and leave out most of the true knowing of this time in the Ozarks. I will tell you how these people were intertwined later. But for now I will tell you about the sights I saw in the tent of serpents....
