Shiva as Lord of Dance (Nataraja)

Hinduism believes that Lord Shiva has many guises & representations. But perhaps the most familiar iconography is the dancing figure within a circle of fire, that is "Nataraja".

The word "Nataraja" is derived from the Sanskrit term, Nata ( नट ) which means dance & Raja ( राज ) which means king or lord. This dance form of Shiva is widely called as "Nataraja" in southern india mostly in Tamilnadu & "Natesavara" in Northen india. Both means the same, The King or Lord of dance.

The divine dance that lord Shiva Nataraja performing is referred to as "Ananda Tandavam", The cosmic dance of bliss. It is believed that the dynamic energy of Nataraja can eradicate old negative patterns limiting our potential & remove the bad effects of Karma. The gesture of his cosmic dance represent lord shiva's five divine activities - Creation, Protection, Destruction, Embodiment & Release.

The style & proportions of the Nataraj is a symbolic of Shiva as the lord of dance. It typically shows Shiva dancing in one of the pose as per Hindu "Naatya Shastra".

Holding Agni (fire) in his left back hand, the front hand in gajahasta (elephant hand) or dandahasta (stick hand) mudra, the front right hand with a wrapped snake that is in abhaya (fear not) mudra while pointing to a Sutra text, and the back hand holding a musical instrument, usually a damaru. His body, head, face, neck, ears & dress are shown decorated with symbolic items, which vary with historic period & region.

He is surrounded by a ring of flames, standing on a lotus pedestal, lifting his left leg and balancing / trampling upon a demon shown as a dwarf who symbolizes ignorance. The dynamism of the energetic dance is depicted with the whirling hair which spread out in thin strands as a fan behind his head.

This dance form of Shiva, Nataraja has been perhaps the wide spread worshipping icon in Hinduism, especially in "Chidambaram", a town in Tamilnadu ( southern india ) where Hindu Legend tells that Lord shiva once performed his dance of creation & destruction in a Grove of "Thillai" trees.

Had bharatanatyam class in the evening from 7.30

The class was light or maybe the ac was on that's why I wasn't getting breathless

I started out with thillai ambala shabdam once again. We were working on it some months back until we had our dance exams coming up so decided to practice for the exam

And then after that we decided to practice jathis and allaripu for a while.

And now finally back to shabdam which I really like and I am looking forward to learn this one

Because it finally has abhinaya, my favourite thing to do while dancing

My teacher told me that once I move to college I need to start performing because there has been a long gap.

I could actually dance for durga puja but I am going outside for a little trip as well as preparing and packing for college

Because someone's college decided to start the first year after puja holidays

Anyway what happens happens for the best. I know I will get really good opportunities to perform once I join

VAITHEESWARAN TEMPLE

Vaitheeswaran Temple is devoted to Vaitheeswaran, a form of Lord Shiva, who is also considered as the God of Medicine. There is a Navagraha Temple located within the complex, with God Angaraka (Mars) as the main deity, who is , by legends, said to have been cured of lepros by parying at this temple. The temple is also famous for Naadi astrologers.

BRAHMA TIRTHA

Brahma Tirtha is one of the 22 tirthas inside the Seerkazhi Temple Complex, which lies near the Brahmapureeswarar Shrine. The local inhabitants believe that Lord Brahma offers prayers to Lord Shiva at this tirtha. It is also believed that, by taking a dip here, pilgrims can purify their body and mind.

THILLAI NADARAJAR TEMPLE

Thillai Natarajar Temple in Chidambaram is dedicated to Lord Shiva, worshipped in the Nataraja form or the dancing posture. The temple has been renovated several times, since the reign of Pallavas and Cholas. This 10th century temple was constructed by the Chola Kings and has huge walls and four tall shikharas in four different directions. There is a Sivagangai Tank in this temple, along with 108 dance postures of Lord Shiva carved in the towers, as depicted in Natya Shastra.

TIRUKKOLAKKA SHABDAPUREESAR TEMPLE

Tirukkolakka Shabdapureesar Temple, also known as the Taalam Udayar Kovil, is located at Tirukkolakka, near Seerkazhi. The temple is the 15th among the Tevara Stalangal, where Lord Shiva is worshipped in the form of Shabdapureesar. The other shrine in the temple is dedicated to Goddess Osai Kodutha Nayaki, which covers around three fourth of an acre, with two prakarams.

GOPALAKRISHNAN TEMPLE

The Gopalakrishnan Temple, located at Tirukkavalampadi near Seerkazhi, is devoted to Gopala Krishnan and his consorts Rukmani and Sathyabhama. The main deity in the temple is in the standing position, with his left arm resting on a cow. This temple is famous for Thatamalar Poikai Theertham and the annual Tirumangaialwar Mangalasasana Utsavam, celebrated in the Tamil month of Thai.The Rohini Asterism is another important festival celebrated in the Tamil month of Aavani.

Srirangam is the foremost of the eight self-manifested shrines of Lord Vishnu. It is also considered the first, foremost and the most important of the 108 main Vishnu temples. This temple is also known as Thiruvaranga Tirupati, Periyakoil, Bhoologa Vaikundam, Bhogamandabam. In the Vaishnava parlance the term "KOIL" signifies this temple only. The temple is enormous in size. This temple lies on an islet formed by the twin rivers Cauvery and Coleroon.

Thirukadaiyur Amritaghateswarar Temple is situated in a small town of Thirukadaiyur, near Seerkazhi. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. This 11th century shrine is considered to be one of the 8 Veeratta Stalams of Lord Shiva. The Shiva Linga is believed to be a manifestation of the celestial nectar that was obtained during the churning of milky ocean by the Devas and Asuras.

IIM Bangalore, IIT Madras Release Joint Report on India’s Evolving Startup Incubation Landscape

IIM Bangalore’s startup incubator NSRCEL, in collaboration with IIT Madras's CREST, recently launched the report titled “India Incubator Kaleidoscope 2024.” This report provides critical insights into the role of incubators in the Indian startup ecosystem, emphasizing their importance for economic growth and job creation.

The report was unveiled during the SummitUp event, featuring notable figures such as Former IAS officerAmitabh Kant (G20 Sherpa), Prof. Rishikesha T. Krishnan (IIM Bangalore), and Prof. Thillai Rajan A. (IIT Madras).

Importance of Startup Incubation Ecosystem

An incubator refers to an organization or facility designed to support early-stage companies by providing essential resources and services that help them grow and succeed. The role of incubators has evolved significantly over the years, becoming a critical component in nurturing innovation and entrepreneurship across the country.

It primarily provides:

Mentorship, and guidance

Networking opportunities

Funding

Training, and development

Notable IAS officers and the government have significantly promoted the incubation ecosystem. In January 2016, the government of India launched the Startup India Action Plan Scheme, led by Ex- DPIIT secretary, and former IAS officer, Ramesh Abhishek.

The ex-IAS officer, Ramesh Abhishek led the scheme that allowed entrepreneurs and startups to streamline regulatory processes, access funds conveniently, and collaborate with educational institutions to support their startup scheme.

Key Findings of IIM Bangalore and IIT Madras’ Incubator Report

Proposed by experienced Ex IAS officer Amitabh Kant, the startup scheme “India Incubator Kaleidoscope 2024” includes some crucial findings.

Incubators significantly enhance startup credibility, making them 2.5 times more likely to secure funding than non-incubated startups.

Chennai and Bangalore are leading in the startup ecosystem, hosting a high concentration of both academic and industry incubators. Notably, Chennai has 82% academic incubators, while Bengaluru and Gurugram have 71% and 84% industry incubators, respectively.

India has only 0.8 incubators per million people, significantly lower than countries like the US, UK, and China, which have 8 to 10 per million.

Incubated startups contribute significantly to the economy, with an average revenue of ₹1590 crores for every 100 incubated startups in their initial years. By their ninth year, the average asset value for these startups is estimated at ₹10,627 crores.

The incubation process is particularly beneficial for students, young professionals, women founders, and those with limited financial resources. The report emphasizes that deep-tech sectors like AI/ML and biotech show high rates of incubation.

Insights of Key Professionals on this Newly Released Report

Several policymakers, professors, and key professionals, such as IAS officers, shared their insights on the release of the report on incubators. Some notable statements are from Prof. Srivardhini Jha, Prof. Thillai Rajan A., and former IAS officerAmitabh Kant.

Prof. Srivardhini Jha said it reflects the activities and impact of incubators and focuses on the need to raise the level of incubation activity and enhance the quality of incubation efforts nationwide.

Prof. Thillai Rajan A. explained that the narrative on the Indian startup ecosystem has centered around start-ups and investors, and this report turns the spotlight on incubators, a significant link in the startup value creation chain.

However, the IAS officers also highlighted the need to work while remaining optimistic as the Indian government scheme, initiated during the tenure of ex IAS officer Ramesh Abhishek like the Startup India Action Plan Scheme, Funds of Fund, and Startup India Seed Fund Scheme contributed significantly in boosting this Incubation landscape of the country.
