On This Day In Royal History . 12 October 1537 . Church bells around London pealed in celebration, parish churches around the country sang the Te Deum, bonfires were lit, the city merchants gave out fruit & wine, German merchants gave wine & beer to the poor, & the happiest of days was ended by two thousand rounds being fired into the sky from the Tower of London. It was a day of celebration, not only for Henry & Jane, but also for the country. . ◼ Although the Queen seemed to be recovering well from her ordeal at first, she was seriously ill by the 18th. Jane had developed puerperal fever, & by the 23rd, she was delirious, & septicaemia had set in. Jane, the Queen who had given Henry the longed for son & heir, died on the night of the 24th of October. . ◼ Edward was christened on 15 October, with his half-sisters, the 21-year-old Lady Mary (later Queen Mary I) as godmother & the 4-year-old Lady Elizabeth (later Queen Elizabeth I) carrying the chrisom; & the Garter King of Arms proclaimed him as Duke of Cornwall and Earl of Chester. . ◼ Edward’s father, King Henry VIII, died on 28th January 1547, making Edward King Edward VI of England. . . . #OnThisDayInHistory #ThisDayInHistory #TheYear1537 #KingEdwardVI #KingofEngland #EdwardVI #hamptoncourtpalace #TudorHistory #EdwardVIofEngland #HouseofTudor #History #EnglishMonarch #Tudor #EnglishMonarchy #RoyalHistory #HenryVIII #JaneSeymour #Theking #otd #OnThisDay #Tudors #protestant #Tudor #TudorHistory #Artwork #portraitpainting #BritishMonarchy #D12Oct (at Hampton Court Palace) https://www.instagram.com/p/CGPumBkDQ2I/?igshid=1o0lg8ts7whs1

On This Day In History . 12 November 1537 . Jane Seymour's funeral . . ◼ Jane Seymour (Born c. 1508 – died.24 October 1537) was Queen of England from 1536 to 1537 as the third wife of King Henry VIII. She succeeded Anne Boleyn as queen consort following the latter's execution in May 1536. She was publicly proclaimed as queen consort on 4 June 1536. Jane’s well-publicised sympathy for the late Queen Katharine & the Lady Mary showed her to be compassionate & made her a popular figure with the common people &  most of the courtiers. She was never crowned because of plague in London, where the coronation was to take place. . ◼ She died of postnatal complications less than two weeks after the birth of her only child, a son who became King Edward VI. . ◼ Jane was buried on 12 November 1537 in St. George's Chapel at Windsor Castle after the funeral in which her stepdaughter, Mary (later Queen Mary I), acted as chief mourner. A procession of 29 mourners followed Lady Mary, one for every year of Queen Jane’s life. Jane was the only one of Henry's wives to receive a queen's funeral. . The following inscription was above her grave for a time: . 'Here lieth a Phoenix, by whose death . Another Phoenix life gave breath: . It is to be lamented much . The world at once ne'er knew two such'. . ◼ After her death, Henry wore black for the next three months & did not remarry for three years, although marriage negotiations were tentatively begun soon after her death. Moreover, he put on weight during his long widowerhood, becoming obese & swollen & developing diabetes & gout. Historians have speculated she was Henry's favourite wife because she gave birth to a male heir. When Henry died in 1547, he was buried beside her, on his request, in the grave he had made for her. . . . #onthisdayinhistory #thisdayinhistory #theyear1537 #d12nov #JaneSeymour #QueenofEngland #HouseofTudor #QueenConsort #History #EnglishMonarchy #BritishMonarchy #TheTudors #InstaHistory (at Windsor, Berkshire) https://www.instagram.com/p/BqGOIgYFUoD/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1a4sy1jyfklj6
