Oooh Sherlock Dipper for the wip ask game 👀 that sounds hella cool

Hi! This is the working title I had for Return, to the Scene of the Crime! I've liked working on this a lot; exploring RRR concepts is really fun to me and I liked conceiving this Dipper and Mizar as a sort of Holmes vs Moriarty dynamic where they're competing against each other in a series of mysteries. I was also super inspired by the TV series Fargo in how it follows both the side investigating the crime and the side covering it up, which I hope to explore more now that the cat is out of the bag in the latest chapter :3

Still working on the next chapter, but here's a snippet from it!

“You got your net?”

“Yup.” Lucy Ann extended the handle. “Got the long one too, in case he tries going over me.”

Dipper nodded, and hefted his own. “Alright. Stand back, Mr. Yancin.”

“It’s Professor Yancin, actually.” The chemistry professor said, then blinked and backed up behind his desk. “Just be careful. There’s some potent chemicals in there.”

“Potent- hang on, you said this was the cleaning cupboard!”

“There’s bleach and ammonia cleaners in there!” He ducked a little lower. “Just don’t go smashing stuff, okay?”

“Smashing stuff?” Dipper gave a chuckle. “I told you, Yancin. We’re professionals.”

At that moment there was a banging behind the door; he turned back to it, and gave Lucy Ann a nod. She readied her net, and he reached out and grasped the handle. Then he threw it open, and in one motion he raised his net and brought it down on-

-on the beak of one huge griffin filling the entire space of the closet. Dipper heard a low growl, and his eyes went wide.

“Hey, that’s not a teacup griiiiiFFIN!” It bit down on the net and charged into him, leaving him hanging on for dear life as it started running around the lab. “Whoa, whoa, stop! Stop!”

Lucy Ann glared at the man. “Wha- This is not a teacup griffin, man! This is full size!”

“But that’s what the internet listing said- eek!” He ducked as the griffin jumped on his desk, crushed his monitor under its feet, and spread its massive wingspan. “My computer! Noo, it’s destroying everything!”

“I got it, I-” Dipper grabbed for the edge of the desk, only for that to be ripped out of his hands as it took flight. “I don’t got it - Lucy Ann! Heeeelp!”

“Stultissimi,” Lucy Ann muttered under her breath; she cast aside the tiny net and looked around the room. The flag of the California Federation was hanging by the door, flapping wildly on its post as the griffin half-flew, half ran laps around the narrow lab. She jumped up, tore it down and held it out in front of her like a matador.

The griffin slammed into the drywall as it made its turn to her, Dipper hanging off its neck inches from the floor. It tried to weave past her but she pounced on it, wrapping the flag over its eyes and pushing back as hard as she could. It was like stopping a train, but first they skidded, then they slid to a stop, her back landing against a window just hard enough to hurt.

Quiet, again. She took a moment to let out a breath - then looked down at the griffin. It was utterly still now under the darkness of the flag, its breathing returning to normal. She could see a movement under the feathers, a hand struggling to make it out.

“Lucy Ann?” Said his muffled voice. “A little hel- whoa!” She dragged him out from under the griffin, and he jumped to his feet, brushing himself off. “Uh, there we go, I guess! But I don’t think it’s gonna fit in our cage.”

“Eh, animal control can deal with that. Which is exactly what I said when you took this job!”

“Hey, if it was actually a teacup griffin, this would’ve been a breeze! Besides, we had that cancellation-“

“Yeah, but that doesn’t mean you had to fill it.” She rolled her eyes. “I thought you wanted to keep this focused on mysteries.”

what about dissecting ashley's monologue to indulge a reader instead 👀

I do think that, like, examples work best for people who maybe really like the vibes that post is putting out, but want to see it in action, so it does work as a teaching moment.

I do also what to preface this by saying that not every monologue needs to hit all or any of these criteria. It is, specifically, about being unsettling, but I think if you hit the first big monologue with a lot of these, it will make EVERYTHING the villain says way more unsettling just because you know what they're capable of. Ashley gets a lot of jokes (from me, mainly from me) for being a wordy little shit, but he only has a handful of true monologues and ALL OF THEM occur when he has the people he's monologuing at at his mercy. I think the biggest crime a villain can commit is monologuing before they've secured a victory. (This is why Ludinus irks me where Lucien never did- Lucien's monologues ALWAYS occurred when he had the upper hand and right before he pulled a full Ozymandias, whereas Ludinus tends to monologue seconds before he gets utterly humiliated. Like yeah, he got away and technically "won" but he talked too soon. That said, Ludinus's monologues do fit a lot of these criteria, so like… They're good monologues. He's just doing it way too soon, but, like, I get it. Poor Matt would never get to use those speeches if he didn't.)

Also Ashley is Lucien's narrative foil and based on Brennan Lee Mulligan so of course he knows when and where to deliver his speeches.

BUT TO THE POINT. The monologue in dreamers is EXTREMELY important, because it's Ashley's proper introduction (barring the scene at the end of OUADYA where he is merely set up as Jayne's partner. Lord Allard's son, and an annoyance to her, which makes him seem like some cheap additional muscle). This monologue is basically Ashley's Establishing Character Moment after he's wasted the Tombtakers, who had previously wasted the Mighty Nein with a surprise attack and then additionally wasted several Assembly wizards, proving he's a scarier threat.

But let's break it down! I'm gonna go through the full scene alongside all ten examples in the post so this will get long and… extremely indulgent, so remember I WAS ASKED. #autism

A fifth person stumbled out and then stumbled backwards- a skinny, though well-muscled, man in light plate with a dark bowl-cut and piercing blue eyes. His eyes widened underneath his fringe of straight bangs and he dragged his teeth down his bottom lip.

“Oh… Oh boy. That is… Yikes. You, uh, really tore into my friends there.” He pushed further in instead of running, which seemed unbearably stupid and just a bit irritating. It might have been fun if he tried to flee. “So that happened.” Tyffial’s nostrils flared and she advanced. One more easy kill then? One more easy kill then. He blinked at her as she took graceful strides towards him like a predatory beast, but didn’t move. It was as if she didn’t have a necrotic blade in her hand and blood splattered across her tanned skin. It was as if he believed if he didn't move, she could not see him. “Ohhh. Oh you’re gonna kill me now. Fantastic. Just one thing I gotta say first.” His entire bearing changed before Tyffial could abort her action, leaving Zoran and Otis shouting futilely behind her. His eyes darkened and a blade came into his hands- a dark dagger- and before she could properly register how ineffective it would be against a rapier, the man moved and slipped underneath her defenses and slammed the dagger, hilt-deep into her stomach and twisted. ”Thank you.”

Here we have Ashley's intro into the scene which already sets him up as unsettling- he stumbles in, sees the carnage, acts like a bumbling idiot, all to see what Tyffial will do and the moment she attacks him, he goes in for the kill, thanking her for giving him a reason to attack here. This is where the contradictions come in! We learn immediately that for all that Ashley is a brutal servant of the Chained Oblivion, he has a code. He won't attack unless he's attacked first.

Tyffial gurgled and slipped to the floor on top of her pile of corpses. The man standing before her flipped the dagger and threw it at Zoran- landing just to the left of his heart in a critical blow that dropped him to his knees. The dagger yanked back into his hands and he lunged at Otis, drawing a streaming red line from ear to ear across their throat like a smile, leaving them choking and bleeding out on the stones.

No, no, no… Tyffial gripped her stomach with one hand and started to crawl towards Otis. She had potions in her bag. She could bring them back up. She could fix this.

I can’t be alone again.

Zoran recovered and lunged, flaming maul aiming to make short work of this stranger, but he sidestepped into the shadows and reappeared elsewhere. Zoran tried to aim again, but the maul passed through nothing but an illusion. He had time to bark a confused huh before the man reappeared and stabbed him in the back with the same brutal efficiency he had shown on everyone else.

“See. Here’s the thing. I don’t like to fight people who don’t attack first. It’s a code of honor thing. I’m a paladin.” He yanked the blade free and left Zoran to fall back to his knees and stay down this time. “I’m a really, really nasty paladin, but there’s still a code I follow. Evil has standards sometimes, right?” He gave his dagger another flip and threw it right into Tyffial’s hand, piercing through bone and preventing her from crawling any closer to Otis. She bit back a scream.

“That’s gonna leave a mark by the by.” He recalled the dagger into his hand and moved to Tyffial, crouching in front of her and blocking her view of Otis.

Furthering the contradictions- Ashley is extremely affable, even as he's actively attacking. This is also where body language comes into play. Ashley plays with his food in combat due to the illusory nature of his paladin/weapon abilities. He does spend a lot of this conversation crouching, turning a dangerous conversation into a more conversational one by virtue of making it a chat.

Knowing not what else to do, she spat in his face and snapped through pained tears, “What do you want?”

The man dragged a hand down his face and flicked the bloody spittle off his fingers. “Okaaay. Way to start a negotiation. Noted. Hi. I’m Ashley. Nice to meet you.” He grabbed her by the hair and threw her back against the bodies and, all the while, his casual tone never changed, which made it all the more haunting. “And since we’re friends now… I have to tell you that I lied before. Those guys weren’t my friends. I pretended to be a helpless rich boy who needed a guide and threw money at them until they decided to let me play too. Guess which part of that I lied about.” He smiled wickedly and held the bloody dagger up to her face- this close she could see it was a jagged, ugly thing with an endless maze pattern carved into it. It made her dizzy to stare at it.

This is a mild example of subverting expectations- Ashley doesn't get angry that Tyffial spits at him. (In an ideal world (and will likely be fixed in future edits of the series) I would not have off-loaded the effect of the scene by pointing out that Tyffial finds his contradictions haunting. So, like, this is a learning experience for me too. Don't lampshade that. Let your audience find it haunting without the POV character telling them that it is.) Anyway, Ashley's reaction- tossing her aside into the bodies- is just a show of his strength. He doesn't backhand her like a typical arrogant male villain would do for the disrespect. He simply brushes it off and then continues his speech by pushing Tyffial's face in the mess she made of the people he had with him and what a huge depth between their power and his is.

Every breath was agony. Tyffial frantically checked on Otis and Zoran- still alive, but barely. She needed to get to them.

Ashley looked over his shoulder to follow her gaze and dragged a hand down his clean-shaven chin. “Right. You asked me a question. What do I want… Hm. What… do I want?”

He screwed up his face, considering. “World peace? Good will towards all persons? The total annihilation of literally everything in this fucking world?”

He laughed, as cold and brutal as his tone of voice wasn’t. “Weirdly the, uh, that one doesn’t contradict the first two things, but you’d know all about that, wouldn’t you? You get it. You get that ever since the Calamity, things have been barreling towards the exact same scenario, ‘cept there’s no gods this time to punish the folly of man, is there? They locked all those doors up really tight after the last guy yanked the deadbolt out. So it just continues and continues on and on and on. Someone’s gotta put the kibosh in it. ‘Cause we can’t do this again. The next time mortals aim so fucking high there’s not gonna be a hand to slap us down and eventually we’ll push too far and it’s gonna be worse than if the gods had just put us in cosmic time-out with an apocalypse in our backyard.”

He stopped just shy of building to an angry rant, breathed in, and then spoke softly again. “I don’t want that. I won’t be alive then, but if I was, I’d definitely hate to see what happens when hubris runs unchecked.”

Here we have Ashley messing with syntax! He gets distracted, he rambles, he alternates between deep eloquence and slang. He speaks casually, but formally, due to a combination of his noble background and general disregard for how he's perceived. I think on top of comparing him to Brennan, who his entire syntax is based on, he has the vibe of a Christoph Waltz character who plays some REALLY iconic villains by simply using natural charm, casual syntax, and extremely sharp lines delivered in the middle of otherwise innocuous rambles. It's also kind of a Tarantino staple and I've made ZERO secret how much of my writing is inspired by him. He's also based on Harry Lime from The Third Man, which is where a lot of his belief system comes on, who ALSO delivers monologues in this specific way.

Ashley mentioning that world peace and general good will being the same as annihilation ALSO subverts audience expectations, because it's NOT sarcastic. This is the crux of what he believes, which brings us into the next bit.

He leaned closer to her, almost nose to nose. “See, deep down, we both want the same things. We don’t want this world to exist anymore. You just want a better one and I want nothing because there’s no such thing as better.”

The anger returned and this time he let it run unchecked. “Better is a lie that mommies and daddies tell their children so they grow up to keep rearranging deck chairs on a sinking ship. Better is a subjective term that nobody will ever agree to. The only thing that is better than what you have right now is nothing.” He spread his hands, eyes closing in a sudden serenity that came on the heels of the anger and somehow merged with it. “Absolute. Perfect. Nothingness. No pain. No suffering. No sense of self. And isn’t that exactly what you want- No, don’t answer. That was rhetorical.”

Jayne believes in destruction for destruction's sake. Ashley believes it serves a purpose and here he uses this to throw Tyffial's beliefs against her and mirror her, pointing out that Lucien's plan to bring everything a equilibrium is pointless because better is subjective and generally a lie because one person's better is another person's eternal damnation. Without actually saying it in direct words, he's effectively deriding Lucien's plan that Tyffial still believes strongly in is just another lie and that what she really wants is for her pain to stop.

This is also where we get quiet confidence mixed with loud assertion, which is Brennan Lee Mulligan's STAPLE CROP in monologues. Ashley gets loud when he's genuinely angry, so this marks the first time we see what makes him angry. We know at this point and it's one of the few things we know that he hates his father, who famously was part of a cult that wanted to cause destruction and suffering in the name of betrayer gods and their ilk not because of belief in their tenets, but because they were rich assholes who wanted an excuse built in for why they chose to be cruel assholes. This spits in the face of Ashley's belief system which is that destruction MUST occur for new growth. This is also what sets apart from Jayne, who believes in destruction for destruction’s sake.

(As a sidebar, a lot of Ashley’s design went into me really putting the work in to figure out what would make a lawful follower of a chaotic deity. Believing in the natural cycle of death and rebirth felt like a good way to honor paladin creeds even with Ashley being a Treachery Paladin that are just modified Blackguards, but are still required to take Oaths, unlike Oathbreakers.)

He placed his palms together. “And I promise I’m getting to the point. The point… The point is that I need everything to go a certain way and you are very, very much not hip to my vibe right now. So I’m gonna need you to step off, go back to your little hovel in whatever shithole you crawled out of, and not try to murder these people anymore. Mmkay? ‘Cause if you don’t, then the halfling’s gonna bleed out.” He pointed behind him at Otis, glassy-eyed and taking shallow breaths as their slit throat leaked blood onto the stones. “And then I’m gonna start peeling the skin off the goliath and when I’m done with that, I’m gonna break both your legs and leave you here with the bodies just to see what you end up doing. Trust me, I have theories and it’s a hell of a thing to watch when you’re bored between acts of devotion for the uncaring toothy void I call a god.”

Once again, we see Ashley playing with syntax. This is also where we get our first glimpse of Ashley’s certain threats. We know Ashley is good on his word- he’s already caused the Tombtakers considerable harm without them ever getting a hit on him. And while he has certainly explained the WHY he wants to do what he does, he has left everything ambiguous, including his god. Maybe a good history check would narrow it down, given he did flash his dagger, which is specifically the Blade of Broken Mirrors, the arm of Tharizdun’s chosen, but ultimately he’s vagueing it up. He said a lot of shit, but all he really said was “I want the world to burn and I want you to let this go.” We don’t know Ashley’s plan, only that it involves the Somnovem and requires the Nein to survive. So he hasn’t paused everything to reveal his evil plan. He’s just made it plain that the Tpmbtakers are interfering and given them a clear option. He could kill them and he probably should, but he has his reasons for letting them live to tell the tale should Tyffial choose “correctly.”

Ashley grabbed her by the collar to pull her up, putting pressure on her wounded stomach. His tone was unnervingly even now. “I’ve got big plans and I’m a rich male human, so I’m really used to things going my way. You don’t wanna see me when things aren’t. This is me being polite, honestly. And you wanna know why I’m being polite? Because I know you’re not gonna let your friend bleed out. I know you’re gonna do everything I ask. And how do I know that? Because deep down, you want the darkness too. It doesn’t matter who brings it so long as it swallows you whole.”

He released her and she fell back again with a half-choked cry of pain. She folded her arms over her wet and tacky leathers like she might hold more of her own blood inside her that way.

“So what’s it gonna be? Tick tock.”

Tyffial didn’t waste any time. “Otis. Fuck you. Fuck you.” “Are you telling Otis that or are you talking to me?” He waved his hand around his ear. “Not really clear.”

“Save Otis,” she gasped, desperately, and hated herself all the more for it.

“Oh that’s a good choice. Lovely work.” He clapped his hands together, stood, marched over to Otis and laid his hands upon the wound he’d left. The skin knit together leaving a pale scar like a smile across their neck. Ashley took one look at his work, threw a smile over his shoulder at Tyffial and vanished.

And scene! For Ashley, anyway. Here we see him using personal knowledge against Tyffial- he knows enough to know that she’s broken, desperate to keep hold of the friends she has, and won’t choose a horrific, slow death in favor of her pride. He doesn’t pull the “you should join me” card because he knows she’d never do it, but he plays on her exhaustion by saying that to get what she wants, all she has to do is step aside for a moment. It’s cruel, callous, and does everything it’s supposed to- set Ashley up as a villain and show how absolutely fucked up Tyffial is by everything that is happening, providing a bait and switch that shows she and the Tombtakers WON’T be villains in the next story and that Ashley is absolutely too strong for the Nein to deal with and that they’re in over their heads even with their human enemies.

And that’s the monologue break-down! Hopefully it helps some people with writing villains and if it doesn’t… well, here’s my thought process for one of my favorite scenes in all of LitMoR.

"Oh um... I mean cus I can't do Chan's room anymore so um- I know, I want to react to it but company says no, sorry, yeah."

Before I shuffle... I honestly believe this was going to happen after Chan vented in his last "Chan's Room" when he said a rookie group didn't bow to them when they walked past nor greeted them with respect and chose not to acknowledge them. Chan was 100% right for being upset. Everyone knows in Korea that honorifics is a big deal there, so to disrespect your seniors at work / elders in general, it's really bad on whoever that group was. However, the way he handled it was really irresponsible. To state publicly without saying who the group even was and leaving it to his fans to spectaculate, he didn't take in consideration on how his fans were gonna react afterwards. He should know that Kpop fans in general are very defensive and protective over their idols, they will always go to the extreme, so him being upset at their behavior (for example, Stays attacking IVE and assuming they were the group that didn't show Stray kids respect by bowing, when there was no fucking proof it was them). It's like... What do you expect? Then now, he said the company won't allow him to do "Chan's Room" anymore (probably because he said too much and caused so much uproar). Then fans showed up at the JYP building to protest for Chan to be allowed again to do "Chan's Room" again and Chan complained on Bubble that they're not helping the situation. So really the point of all of this of what I'm trying to say is, that Chan just needs to acknowledge that this is his fault in a way. He should be able to speak his truth, but he is not in a position or industry or in a company, where that is even allowed. Chan knows how strict they are over there. If he was like a Korean hip hop artist or from an independent label, it wouldn't matter then what he says. Or let's say he was in a group like KARD for example, BM is known for saying whatever the hell he wants, but he can do that because he is not under a prestigious company, he's popular but everyone knows KARD is considered a nugu group. So either Bang Chan sucks it up and accept this is the consequences of his own actions and if he continues to behave this way, it's gonna keep causing controversy or negative attention on him.

"Pressure coming down on me"

First things first... To confirm on what the actual truth is here... It's a yes that JYP is not allowing Chan to do "Chan's Room" anymore. They are not happy with him, he is also not happy with them. Bang Chan lost the fight, he lost the battle on being able to keep doing "Chan's Room", which caused a big argument. So there's a lot of conflict going on. Now... To figure out why he's been so adamant about speaking his mind is because he wants change. Bang Chan just really wants change it seems. I feel like he doesn't like how much he's being controlled in some aspects. Chan wanted more freedom and have the ability to be closer to his fans. I honestly believe that "Chan's Room" was therapeutic in a way for him. It gave him the space to express himself and put himself more in the spotlight with The Star card. He felt the interactions with his fans were more pure and genuine. I also think that Bang Chan felt like he had more people in his circle when he did the lives? It made him feel like he had more "friends" it seems. He could have been feeling very lonely, so by doing "Chan's Room" it gave him comfort. Dare I say he's been kind of acting "delulu"? Like he's deluding himself into think he has this connection and friendship with his fans. When it is not like that and it's more of a parasocial relationship. Then when stays behave and react to his words, it's like he remembers all of a sudden he's a leader of a group, not their friend. So it's like he acts like a parental figure for them and scolds them when they do something bad, but also it's that Chan kind of snaps out of it and realizes that his fans can't be his friends that he's wanting so badly. So when they cross the boundaries, he gets mad. When really, he's just mad at the situation behind scenes, and he's also really mad at himself. Bang Chan is upset at the lack of control he feels, he has a lot of fucking leg room in comparison to other idols, we all know that, let's be honest, but - outside of his job, Chan just feels he can't voice his mind, his feelings, and how he wants friends, he wants a family, he wants a partner, etc. So I feel like he enjoys being a idol, of course, but like most idols he is upset at the lack of ability to be honest and form stable relationships. Epel was very open about voicing how he feels about the situation. Him, Rook, and Vil were really showing their ugly flaws during some nights when they fought over A) I deserve him more and B) You're a coward to give up

Idia just locked down most. He accepted he was no where near the top three picks for perfect boyfriend for Kalim but as those hours ticked he slowly felt sick as he couldn't stop seeing Kalim smiling at him

Draconia, similar to Savanaclaw, was tense for a while. But like Heartslabyul, they hosted a secret meeting to discuss the options before them when they kind of got emotional with jealous emotions than sadness about what they were being like and huddling close like they used to back in the days

Then one day Kalim returned to physical classes. He started helping with Jamil's chores to make it easier for him, and everyone else was very easing back and just being good friends and not pushing him to give a verdict yet

This soon led to Kalim asking them to meet in Scarabia for a party which once everyone else hit the hay/left he confessed properly to them all including the things I mentioned above and in the end mentioned he likes them all the same and can't decide so he requested they all date each other to see what happens

There was some objections (mostly Jamil 'cuz "what would your family think'') but pretty much everyone soon agreed to try it out and will accept Kalim's choice if he decides differently (please send me a ask on their dates PLEASE DAMN THE LIMIT!)

This happened with Riddle one karaoke date ay Scarabia for all with Kalim recording (I like to hc he had a great voice)

Kalim was heart broken when he was still forced to find a bride despite loving so many, he fell deep into depression and the next concert sang this

Okay so, re: my tags about it being different than everyone else's that you eyeballed like. Maybe I'm just too aromantic for All This, but the biggest reason I usually don't love the season 1 royjamies that are already out there is because I feel like they warm up to each other emotionally and catch feelings and all that way too fast and imho without much actual romancing? Like, they have sex a few times and then they're like okay I was totally wrong you've never done anything wrong in your life. Which like honestly....... boring.

And my second biggest issue is usually more with Jamie's characterization than Roy's! (I mean I do always wish people wouldn't slough off a lot of Roy's anger and other various Problems and all, but that's consistent lmao). But like season 1 fics make Jamie such a woob and a sadsack and take away his agency quite a bit, like all his bad behavior is someone else's fault - and like, okay, to a degree, I GUESS, but like...... idk man him having a reason to act that way doesn't make it less of a choice that he made.

I also think there's way too much emphasis on him being protected and rescued, which like, listen. I love a good romantic rescue as much as the next guy, but it was also something I really loved in the show that Jamie got to defend himself. He got to decide to be fed up, he got to fight back. And!! He always had a belligerent do-your-worst attitude, which he maintained all the way up through season 3 to the end!! I love that about him and I find it lacking in general, but especially in season 1 fics when it should be most present, when Jamie has the most people and reason to be defensive.

Anyway, back to the first thing. I do think that having sex with each other would change their perspectives of each other significantly, but not necessarily toward romance or even friendship. Like, their Feelings develop totally independently of their physical relationship! Besides which, I feel like there's this really interesting stage in any enemies-to-whatever type of relationship, especially when it starts with a (literal) Bang, where they stop seeing each other as The Enemy and start seeing each other as a living, breathing, vulnerable human being who they happen to be enemies with. And I feel like in a lot of enemies-to-whatever things that stage is sorely neglected, and I think it would be an ESPECIALLY interesting - and vital - stage for royjamie.

So if (IF) I ever wrote one myself, it would still start with a literal Bang. They'd impulsively have sex. Not exactly hate sex, because neither of them can really hate someone they're having sex with - but that's the perspective shift isn't it. They can't hate each other anymore, but that doesn't mean they start to like each other or even really care that much about each other.

So anyway, they would sleep together, and they'd both be way different in bed than they thought the other would be. And they're a little bit mean, not quite in a fun sexy way, but not quite enough to be hurtful either. And then they'd do it again a few times, and they'd be vastly humanized to each other. But they'd still be just coworkers with workplace tension who are fucking and also sometimes Jamie stays for dinner just because they both get lonely and it's only polite for whoever lives in the place they're at to offer. They're slightly more than tolerating each other. They're empathizing with each other and being incredibly intimate - off the clock - and it's a bit weird but a bit not weird and they're just going with it because. well. what else are you gonna do.

And then I'd have them stop sleeping together when Jamie gets transferred, without ever moving into that What Are We stage nevermind any further along than that. And then they become friends, semi-long distance. Texting and stuff. Kind of like the fic Waterfalls, which idr but might be gen. But also I'd probably have it even more of a slow burn than that, at least wrt Roy learning about James. Just because like... another thing I feel like happens a lot is that people have Character A find out about James and then suddenly they like Jamie after that and all. And I don't really like that either, I liked that they had all bonded at least a little before That Whole Thing in canon as well, and I'd want to keep that. OR maybe even bump it up a bit, but have them not suddenly be buddies after it. It would be interesting to explore mixed feelings on that front, where maybe Roy feels protective of Jamie and angry on his behalf, but without having a fully formed (if reluctant, at that point in canon) personal relationship with him.

But anyway so. It wouldn't really be enemies-to-lovers. It would be enemies-to-not-quite-strangers-who-fuck-and-are-intimate (I know allos cannot handle this concept, at least when I bring it up as something I want irl lmfao, they just don't get it! but listen. it happens, it can happen, and it can be pretty good too!), then half-hearted-enemies-again-to-friends, and then friends-to-lovers.

And WHO can say what I'd do or not do with Keeley. But I also hate when she gets just completely written out of the dynamic because I feel like that doesn't make a whole lot of sense and also is a bit boring. Even if it's not an OT3 endgame, I still feel like she should be all kinds of up in their business.

Sorry I took a minute to answer this, it has been a crazy busy couple of days! I'm going to put my whole response under a read more because I have lots of thoughts on this topic!!!

We all took for granted how insane and amazing TS2 lore was. God, I pour one out for her everyday RIP.

Anyway, let's get into this! ↓

Strangetown is my favorite world in TS2 as well! No one is surprised by this I'm sure. I actually ended up tying it (and some of its townies 👀...) into my Strangerville story because I just couldn't help myself. But I'll be honest - the family tree stuff with Lola/Chloe/Jenny/Pollination Tech 9 has always made my brain melt a little. I'm a visual person so I had to reference their family tree as a guide for our conversation. I'll provide the one that I used below!

Lore-wise, you have to start this conversation by talking about alien pollination and normal sim reproduction. You just can't avoid it. For me, I've always seen them as completely separate entities... otherwise Jenny is married to a man who, for lack of a better term, knowingly banged and impregnated her father lmfao. But not only that - if they were the same, that would imply that aliens are abducting people and engaging in sexual relations with them (with willingness or unwillingness not playing a factor; sim abductions can happen to sims who want or fear them) and this is kind of reductive and uncharacteristic of what we know about their species (plus the implications are icky imo). Therefore, I never thought that Pollination Tech 9 would view Lola and Chloe as his children, even though they technically are, in the way that Poli Tech wouldn't view Tycho as his child either (nor would Pascal regard Poli Tech as the father either).

If I'm recalling correctly, I don't think sims are necessarily aware which alien pollinated them in game (even though each sim neighborhood in TS2 has only one Pollination Technician, therefore making all the half-alien babies in that neighborhood half-siblings by default within the limited span of the game). I also don't know that male sims in TS2, from what I remember, are aware they've been pollinated because they're always surprised to find they're "pregnant," meaning there likely wasn't any a-typical intercourse happening that they could connect to the pregnancy (even if, let's be honest, Pascal might have been down for that). I think of pollination as an act similar to cloning, (the wiki says through "advanced technology") or as the name implies it could also just be a consequence of coming into proximity with their species (their name being a reference to reproduction methods of flora by pollination, for example). But realistically... it's a fictional simulation game, and in the case of TS2 it was super campy and a knowingly-leaning-into-the-outrageous kind of simulation game (which I loved and miss). So who knows!

All that to say that I agree; regardless of how the baby process works for aliens, it is still an absolutely crazy family tree lmao. But on the bright side... that at least implies that Pollination Tech 9 wasn't into his wife's father, nor might he be aware that Chloe and Lola are his children. 😅 But I'll stop here because if I think about it for too long, I think my brain might explode lmao. Still, I'm inclined toward the belief that the messiness adds to the flavor! 😂 The Sims team today could never write such a juicy bit of lore. My ass ate their dynamic up.

Also, quick note, JILL HAS EYES IN THE BACK OF HER HEAD?! THAT IS WHY SHE WEARS THE PIGTAILS? WHAT THE HELL?! Gonna look this up -

Holy shit!!! This fact is equal parts incredible and terrifying. Thank you for bringing this my attention. I can't believe I did not know this before this moment. What a (horrifying) little legend.

Oh I loved (and still love) Nervous Subject and Pascal together. Just thinking about that ship makes me giggle because it was one of my first exposures to "shipping" and "fandoms" as a preteen. I always put them together and had them raise little Tycho to fulfill Nervous' family aspiration. (I should note that I was also an avid JRO enthusiast. Johnny has two hands, why should he have to pick between Ophelia and Ripp?) Another interesting layer to the Ophelia/Olive/Nervous family is that Ophelia would be unaware of her direct relation to Nervous (1st cousins)! I loved playing around with this; Olive was a very secretive person who had a dark side for sure, so I'm sure Ophelia would have a lot of questions following her aunt's death (the first being why her aunt's inheritance is going to some rando named Nervous lmao). Plus, who says Ophelia didn't know her aunt was taking people out? She might not have known why, but she had to know all those deaths around Olive couldn't have been coincidental. That's messed up on its own lmao. I like to think that once Nervous and Ophelia meet, they become close and he even helps care for her in a weird-older-brother type way. I just know they would trauma bond lmao.

I didn't care for Loki or Circe (I never played with their household), so I don't have super strong opinions on them. That being said, I love reading people's theories on their connection to the Curious brothers. I think the ongoing feud with the brother's and their connection to Nervous is the most interesting part of their story, but my ideal ending for them would have been being exiled from the town and their careers in general for their shady practices. Pascal seemed like the science antithesis to Loki and Circe who seemed to believe that it was okay for scientific truths to come at the cost of the wellbeing of others. Also, I think Circe is too hot and too evil for Loki AND Vidcund. That's woman commits many crimes, but her taste in men is up there as one of the worst things about her lmao.

Lastly, LAZLO. He's so silly goofy and so chill in comparison to his brothers, and he's definitely the black-sheep of the family. I love how in comparison to Vidcund and Pascal, his personal life is pretty typical and mild. He's just vibing as a third party witness to the chaos. He didn't sign up for any of the drama, yet you know he's a ride-or-die. In my mind, he's also the cool uncle. He'd catch Johnny smoking and be like, "Gotta share little man." He's the best. Little Fun fact - when I watched season 4 of Stranger Things, I couldn't unsee Lazlo Curious every time Argyle opened his mouth.

If you don't see it, that's okay. I can't unsee it though! He's high af, he's precious, he's always has snacks, he will take down the government or transport a dead body for the homies. He should be protected. I totally, 100% agree that Nova is his child!

WHEW sorry for blabbing! Strangetown was a doozy and you're right that the Bella Goth situation adds a whole other intricacy (which I'll definitely be talking about in her specific deep dive post).

I must say that it's very telling how The Irksome Queen have go out of their way to not call out Albert and Jasmine's constant thirst for attention and baiting fans. They keep reiterating that it's CE's fans that continue to give them attention, deliberately being obtuse and skipping over the point. This does NOT change the fact that two full-grown adults are constantly spending their days intentionally trying to upset the fan base. I am so curious about your writing process. I’m reading Bizarre Love Triangle and I’m absolutely bewildered by both how cohesive it is and how fast you post.

Like when Keeley asked to go running with Roy and Jamie last chapter, several chapters after Jamie initially invited her in Amsterdam. Did you know that was coming when you wrote the Amsterdam scene, thus making it work on two levels to establish that Keeley needed space and to set up this later scene? Or was it a coincidence?

Do you outline? In detail? Or just have a general vibe for what happens in each chapter. Or do you figure out plot points as you go? How do you write so fast? Do you write throughout the day or sit down at a certain time and just bang out a bunch of words?

Feel free to entirely ignore this ask. I’m just so fascinated about your entire process and I know I love gushing about writing so if you want to share anything about your process, I would be interested in reading about it

Okay, I absolutely love this question and an excuse to get into it 👀

Like all of my writing, this turned out far longer than I anticipated so my apologies in advance and I'm gonna pop a read more in now

Sometimes I sit down to specifically try to write and finish off a chapter, but a lot of the progress before that is from writing stuff on my phone throughout the day when my brain is on it or when I have a minute. Also, after almost every chapter there's like a day where I don't write at all or write like 100 words and then a point when I go into super writing mode. Almost all of what I write is written in a not necessarily chronological order within the chapter itself but most chapters I work on when I'm on them without jumping ahead with a few exceptions when something wouldn't get out of my head enough that I ended up writing it before going to the chapter I was actually on

Most things are intentionally dropped knowing that I'm coming back to them and when and there are still a bunch of setups hanging all over the place for things we're still coming to. Some things set up stuff pretty close to them (like Colin's aren't you worried Roy's going to cut your dick off now that you're both dating Keeley and Jamie being like no vs when they're sharing a bed the same night and Jamie's internally like Roy is so going to cut my dick off if he finds out I'm bi after this). But lots of them are for things further off and generally, I already know that I'm going to drop the hint at that point before I even get to that point

There's a lot of stuff I put in on purpose and laughed thinking about how it would come back up later. I've already gotten back around to a good chunk of them, but I still have lots of those left to get back to too. The first thing that comes to mind for one that I still have left open is how this is going to come back around later and make a liar of Roy when the team finds out about Roy and Jamie

Occasionally, I think oh this would work with that and throw it in later on without it having originally been foreshadowing, but most of it is intentionally there with the intention of coming back to it

There's the rare time where something's a coincidence (like something next chapter that I realized fit very well with something in the first chapter when rereading some of the older sections without realizing how well it connected before then)

And then ironically, the Jamie asking Keeley to run thing is kind of the exception where originally I was going to have her go at one point with them in Amsterdam and have it contribute more to her being like oh my god I need alone time when suddenly they're inviting her along every day and she's like absolutely not but instead the first chapter of it went how it did and the second chapter skipped ahead to her needing a break and her not going fit so much better but I knew I was also leaving it open for her to go with them later at some point

I just didn't realize it would be last chapter until I was already writing it and saw the direction the morning sections were going and went okay, this is a good time to add this in

And then in terms of outlining, I've reached a point where I end up having to do some level of outline for the chapters but I didn't do that at the start. And how detailed the outline is depends on how hard it is to make sure things go in the right order. But a whole lot of what happens in what order is still just in my head

Since the very start, it's been a lot of holding everything in my head and knowing a lot of what was coming in the long run and short run. And at that point, I wasn't writing things down as a plan but I could benchmark where things happened on the calendar in my head for the June stuff easily like

which weekend was Father's Day meant the team had to find out about them at Sam's restaurant the weekend before

Phoebe had to already know about the Roy and Keeley part before that because of the Cora and Roy conversation before they went to Sam's restaurant

Pride had to come after Father's Day and before the end of school

The end of school had to be where stuff like Leanne asking Roy out showed up

Then off-season stuff was more vaguely in my head like

the stuff with Phoebe around a lot has to go in there and be there some before they go on the trip

but they have to go early enough that Jamie's piercings have time to start healing before pre-season training

And I kind of knew what had to happen before pre-season training, during it, and during actual season

And I generally know the order that the big stuff happens but some of the stuff I moved around in a swapping around the order of plot points kind of way but still keeping them mostly the same (like originally Roy was not going to find out about the pegging thing before the Pride game and it was going to be a chunk after but that worked better when I got going)

Also, some stuff changed in a bigger way longer ago where I decided against the original plan for whatever reason (like originally Keeley was going to meet Cora at the first game of the season, but then that was too long of a wait and Roy bringing around her before then intentionally made more sense so it made way more sense to put her in the Father's Day chapter)

And as far as an organization system goes, I have like 4 systems on the go tbh and I have used some combination of them for each of the chapters since about chapter 7

Chapter 7 (the one where they make the group chat and then later go to Sam's restaurant and tell everybody and like a million things happen there) is the first one where I won't oh fuck I need to write some things down to remember what else needs put in here so it got a list like this in the notes app when I was a good chunk in and was trying to hold in my head all the stuff that had to happen still and how to make it flow in a logical order and then I did not go in that order but checked them off as I went to keep track of what I still needed to get to:

(Also some things blatantly changed between making the list and actually writing them to make them fit better with how things were moving around or to cut them because a different endpoint for the chapter was better):

And for a while it was a lot of holding things in my head and that with the chunks I needed to figure out the order to put in still

And then there was the woefully mislabelled chapters plan for where the things before the season went (with things we aren't yet or that got moved to later redacted). This was useful for a while for not forgetting things but also I don't use anymore because I remember where things are going beyond it and it was missing things past where I cut this off because it got vaguer on timeline the further off the benchmark events were

(the scratched out part there is actually happening in the next update now because it really wasn't a priority to get put there)

(also the chapter 17 part is so long because I remembered shit that had to come between what I had there and what I had as chapter 18 and added it in there and didn't bother to change the numbers even though clearly it was not going to be one chapter anymore)

The sharing the same bed casually thing got moved around for reasons also, partly keeping moving wise and partly working better a different way wise, but mostly this was just a rough estimate of where that would happen anway

Also, why is this also labelled chapter 17? Idk I probably forgot about stuff that needed to go in (which was kind of the whole point of making the list so I would hopefully remember things and add them in there and be able to refer back and not later go oh fuck this should have happened) and put them in later that day between and forgot to relabel things underneath because I was going to do it later and then made a separate note for what actually was chapter 17 and what was chapter 18

Also, there's a lot of stuff that was planned for not quite that long like Colin figuring Jamie out that still was planned for a long time before we got to them but either got missed on this list or weren't planned quite yet or didn't have a spot in the timeline yet and then everything after this on the list is spoilers for the future while also it doesn't really have that much left anyway because that was mostly sorting out the how to get from pre-Amsterdam to the start of the season without losing something important

Also, fun fact, I'm pretty sure this used to be labelled worse and that this is after I had already reworked Amsterdam being 3 chapters but maybe this is the original version. Who knows? Certainly not me... Maybe that's how there ended up being two chapter 17s

And then phone notes ended up not cutting it for trying to keep track of all the parts of a chapter and whose POV each part should be and trying to make it fairly even (except for when there was a reason not to with Keeley having a break from them) and make sure one person isn't disappearing from having a POV forever for no reason so notes app lists became less common unless I was jotting down scenes before putting them into the actual plan when I was really stuck but since chapter 16, it's mostly been

Sorting out what happens into whose POV it is and moving things around or adding in a vague something to put in if someone had way more or less in a thing like this and then adding the numbers for what order things go in and sometimes it ended up changing from this but it was mostly accurate. Also, some chapters don't have this. Some have it from before I started writing. Some have to sort it out after I have some stuff down and then went wait I've gotta figure this out

And then most also have this as a more clear what order things happen thing and making sure that one colour isn't missing for forever (also I highkey don't write their names anymore and just have the colours) (also this is a short ass list, usually there's 17-23 things on there at the start and then how long the scenes themselves end up typically determines if I end up splitting things up again)

The X there means I went never mind I don't need this and then the rest were checked off as I finished the scene. Also, usually I don't have what days things happen, that's just because I was trying to keep track of them specifically because it had to start on a Monday when Keeley was back at work after the trip and end with Roy and Keeley seeing Jamie's dad on the Saturday

Also sometimes the second part is just numbers in the colours. Sometimes there is no other system and it's just the list and what happens. Sometimes scenes get cut or added after that anyway. How much I outline or rely on the outline really depends on how confusing it is to keep track of the POVs switching to make it work out fairly evenly and without too much of someone at a time and someone else dropping off the map for too long. The Pride game one was pretty easy to keep track of because there was almost always a reason why it had to be that character's POV for that part but sometimes sorting out like this is the only way I know whose POV to use for a scene without having to change it later instead

I can't imagine how well those character's meeting would go. These poor main characters who have to solve everyone else's issues by banging them.
