okay i'm gonna tell you about the outbreak of the french revolution because its my favourite chapter and i love that topic almost as much as i love you
sooo lets go back to the summer of 1789, when louis xvi still ruled france. in that time, france was divided into three regimes - the clergy (1st estate), the nobility (2nd estate) and the common men (3rd estate). as you can probably guess; clergy and nobility were favoured in the society and were exempted from tax payment. which meant that the third estate had to pay all the taxes required to keep the economy running which was ofc, very hard for them. on top of that, clergy and nobility also had the privilages of extracting taxes from the 3rd estate - so the clergy took a tax called "taille" and the nobility took a tax called "tithe" from the common people (aka third estate)
that information that i gave you above was just background information. now we get to the messy part. so basically, what happened was that when louis xvi came to throne, he found out that france was broke as fuck. why? you ask. because 1) they'd been helping america to fight wars so their treasury was already weak, 2) maintaining the court of versailles was ver expensive and they didn't have enough money. rip lmao
so now, louis decided that, to improve finances, he would ✨increase taxes✨ which ofcourse, had to be paid by the third estate alone. how convenient. but the catch here was that the ruler couldn't impose taxes aise hi on his own. he had to call a meeting with all three estates and propose this idea. then if it got a majority of votes, THEN he could impose taxes.
so then he called a meeting. and 2nd and 1st estate ofc agreed to this because yk, they would benefit from this because unko toh paisa dena nahi hai, they would only RECEIVE money. but the third estate said no to this for obvious reasons. but the king being king, didn't listen to the third estate.
so the third estate stormed out of the meeting hall in protest and gathered at the basketball court of the palace to create a constitution that would limit the king's powers. all this happened on 5th may 1789. (fun fact: the leaders of this group were actually from the 1st & 2nd estates. they gave up their privileges because they were against this social system)
along with this there were also some philosophers of that age like mirabeau and russo etc. (idr the spellings so sorry of theyre wrong) were against the despotic monarch rule, and they were constantly spreading their ideas to either take away or limit the king's power.
and their was also a rising middle class (aka the educated and kinda wealthy people of 3rd estate) who thought that the 3rd estate was solely responsible for development of society. so they were also against the king having so much power and treating them unfairly.
also also they france had had a bad winter last year – which meant bad harvest – aka limited food supply.
now cut to july 1789, people were annoyed of the food shortage and waiting in lines for hours and hours. so they stormed into shops to get food. and at the same time it was news that the king had ordered troops to move into paris (because of the political situation due to the taxes thing) this made people really angry and on 14 july 1789, they stormed the bastille and destroyed it. this was the start of the 🪄french revolution🪄
i apologise if this was a horrible explanation
