It’s a massive issue with the asexual community too. Because all love and affection is seen as sexual, people assume we’re sociopaths or something because we don’t fuck. This goes doubly for arospec people. I also don’t like having to question whether someone has feelings for me or if I sound like I’m flirting every time I have a conversation with a friend that makes me happy. Idk if other people with social anxiety have that issue but it’s actually a big issue for me.
So yeah, I’m sick of people calling other people homophobic for not liking ships that grasp at straws like this being treated as an absolute truth. I don’t care if the person saying the ship is forced is straight, that doesn’t matter. This impacts everyone. I also don’t want my own identity to be questioned every time I say a same sex ship doesn’t seem logical in story.
No one’s saying you CAN’T ship them, half of shipping is based on friends becoming lovers. I ship couples like that all the time, gay or no. But if someone else doesn’t see it, they’re not homophobic, they’re not “dumb” straight people who can’t see homoerotic tension, they may not even be straight. Even if they are straight, straight people see homoerotic subtext in things ALL THE TIME. Not only is there a huge problem with overly friendly actions being perceived as gay, and thus starting rumors that lead to bullying (oh and btw, THAT’S why so many straight people don’t want others to think they’re gay, that and they don’t like having their orientation questioned any more than you do, it isn’t always internalized bigotry), but there’s also the fact that practically half of mlm and wlw ships are written by straight people if the opposite sex. I feel like people forget that.
Straight people write gay stuff all the time, and read it all the time too. I assure you that there are many, may straight people in your fandoms right now, no matter how LGBT focused the work is. Most straight people of the current few generations are becoming more and more comfortable with same sex relationships. The time when same sex context was box office poison is dying. And keep in mind that I don’t just mean people who fetishize same sex couples. There are plenty of fully fleshed out, non-fetishized same sex couples written by people who are straighter than the pencil they write with. So not everyone who thinks your ship is forced is homophobic, not every forced ship is gay, and half the reasons people give for why their pairing of choice couldn’t POSSIBLY be platonic is stuff people do with friends constantly. Stop pretending your ship is activism.
not to sound like a homophobic straight dude but I think yall should just let some characters be Friends not everything has to be about romance
#shipping#romance tropes#platonic relationships#My straight parents who were born in the seventies/eighties#were watching She-ra with me#and they managed to see the subtext between the leads in like#30 seconds#they had never watched it before and I eas in the last few episodes#they had no context whatsoever#so don’t tell me that straight people can’t see gay subtext
