In general they are long lived and healthy dogs with the most common concerns being dental health, problems with their knee caps towards old age, and (from personal experience) asthmatic problems or issues with their air ways when over excited. As I’ve had it explained to me, this is a common issue among small dogs.

As for temperament, they are typically alert dogs with moderate energy. They do tend to sound the alarm at most of the noises they hear, like their cousins the min pin and chihuahua. Early stage training is encouraged to keep it more moderate. As min pins were bred to hunt rats, and chihuahuas are generally possessive, chipins can struggle to get along with other animals. Again, early training is recommended to help their social side blossom. It is also important to know that chipins are very inquisitive and will try to eat any small objects they find. Like buttons and erasers. Keeping such items out of their reach is a must. Be cautious about having them around children. They are small and relatively delicate and sensitive to things like falls, squeezing, and hitting.

In accordance with their lineage, they are very affectionate dogs, and love to be with their people. They are prone to separation anxiety because of this, but, given the right training, can make excellent companion animals for those who need them (also from experience.)

I have had Haze for over two years now (see the first picture*). She is surprising for a chipin. She’s actually pretty shy, and just doesn’t like being around other dogs unless they are very calm. On the other hand, she loves the company of other animals and tries hard to get along with them, but easily backs down if she thinks they’re upset with her. This friendliness extended to even our rats and gerbils. She has always been incredibly gentle with the other pets, barely any training needed.

When restless, she can be a noisy dog. Mostly during winter as chipins are very sensitive to the cold, therefore she gets less exercise. But her energy is neither high nor low. She’s highly adaptable to the desires of her people. When we feel lazy, she can laze endlessly with us and does not get destructive or upset without a walk. At the same time, she can run around with us for hours without slowing down.

Haze is a highly affectionate dog and is always curled up next to me, asking for attention, or begging for petting. She does have extreme separation anxiety, but is almost always very well behaved wherever she goes with me.

From my experience, I can say that chipins are very lovable, and quite gentle. They are also very motivated by food and can be easy to train with treats. Chipins are very smart, even clever, and can figure out incredible ways to get what they want. As well as learning how to do many things. They are highly responsive to their people, and protective in that they will alert you if they sense anything they think might be dangerous. They do indeed have powerful personalities.
