Logan
I had connected with a horse over the summer that might have finally shone a light on my truest passion. The connection with this horse was so powerful and spiritual that even though he was not mine, I knew he had to be. This majestic horse is named Logan.
I was introduced to Logan when he was cared for at another farm. I had agreed to go to that farm and work with him as my schedule allowed, but it wasn’t just my schedule that we had to work around, it was the owner’s rotational schedule as well. After only a few lessons, the owner suggested I take Logan in at my farm and work with him for a steady, consistent, month. I agreed.
The few visits I had made to the farm where Logan lived, I felt something was special about him. He had some kind of innocence that was hard to put into words. His honesty and desire to “understand” what I wanted from him, was more pure than I can even find words for. For some reason I think of crystal clear spring water cascading down a small rock fall. I’m not sure if that imagery is the purest you, as the reader, can feel, but it is what I think of.
Anyway, I fell in love with Logan before he was even brought to my farm. He was so unsure of the simplest things, but as I explained things to him, he would almost “thank” me for helping him. Logan would literally ask me to hug his face. The face hug is something I have special with almost every horse I had the amazing privilege to raise from a baby. It was not something I often found with older horses. Logan was six. I ate up every face hug I could and with each one I fell deeper and deeper in love. I felt his gratitude in the soft blinks of his eye as I would wrap my arms around his opposite cheek. I felt his relief in his emotional relaxation as he'd lower his face into my chest. I could not help but fall in love. I had never made that kind of connection with an older horse before and like I said, it felt like a “thank you”.
Well, after Logan was moved to my farm, the bond had no choice but to grow. See, Logan was afraid of simple things like haltering. When he had a halter on, he was absolutely catchable, but when he didn’t, he wouldn't allow you near him. This avoidance of being caught could have easily become frustrating to a farm only looking to get a job done, but to me it was intriguing. What was the missing piece? Logan would come to you to be caught if the halter was already on, so it was not about being caught. If he needed a halter to be put on, he wouldn’t come and even would move away if he was approached. It had something to do with the piece of equipment. Since I never turn horses out with halters on, I was going to have to figure this out. It took several months, and even still sometimes, it takes Logan a minute to remember that the halter is not going to hurt him. I did a lot of work in his stall, teaching him how to come and lower his nose into the halter himself. That not only gave him control, but the confidence to do it to himself. If they are willing to do things to themselves, they are more likely to figure them out. Our routine, every time I halter him, is to hold it out, opened for his nose, and wait. He often turns his nose away to his left, but with patience on my part, he slowly recognizes his job and comes back to be haltered. Then we spend a few seconds hugging. I take my hand to his forehead, gather his forelock, and as I run my cupping hand full of forelock hair free of the last strand, Logan lowers his face, blinks softly and gently presses into my stomach as if to thank me for my patience.
I fell so much in love with this horse that I spoke of my love for him in every single training video I did. He was still owned by someone else, but I was even starting to make statements like, “He wants to be mine” in the hopes that I would convince the owner to sell him to me. I would have playful text exchanges with his owner that I loved him and that he didn’t want to go home. We would actually have quite a fun time with that. One day we carried on, in a back and forth exchange, about how Logan ran away. I told her that he ran away and that I acquired another big grey horse named, Hogan. I warned her to not think Hogan was Logan, if she ever drove by. It went on for maybe an hour that day and we had several other fun exchanges after that.
One day the owner and her Aunt came to watch a session with Logan. I joked that I had no idea why they were at my farm. I told her that she didn't have a horse here. My insistence in Logan becoming mine was such a fun joke, that even with her Aunt there I kept the ball rolling. I had a lot of fun with my playful game of “Logan should be mine” that I didn’t mind including her Aunt in the fun as well.
Now this fun had gone on for the entire month that Logan was at my place. I did know he was going to go back home eventually but I sure was starting to dream him more into being mine than going away. So, you could imagine my absolute delight when the owner asked if Logan could stay another month. I was delighted, yes, but also emotionally tortured by the idea of getting another strong one on one with him.
The next month was tough to try to stay detached. I was growing more and more bonded with Logan’s soul, that I started to feel like I would not be able to let him leave. Then it happened. One day while engaging in our little playful skit, Logan’s owner showed a sign that I might have a chance. She said, “If I can have Teddy, you can have Logan.” Now, we all know that Teddy was not truly an option to trade or even sell, but because she made a statement of “letting Logan go for…” I felt a sense of possibility. That was they day that I began to allow myself to truly imagine Logan as mine.
After Logan’s owner had provided me with the hope that there could be a possibility of my never having to send him home, I was like a dog on a bone. I would take up the playful banter about how much I loved him. I would poke around about how much I thought he should be mine. Then I got another hint of hope… a barter exchange was thrown out. I would offer a purchase deal with a sweetened pot of a discount on another horse’s training. I had no reason to believe that she wouldn’t replace Logan, so I felt confident that she would like a barter offer.
Now way too much of a bond had been building with Logan to take “No” for an answer at this point, so I spent one afternoon really hammering the owner with deal after deal. I knew I had her, I just needed a concrete deal to put on paper. I was in an absolute dream when we reached an agreement that I couldn’t make her come to the farm fast enough to make it official. When buying or selling horses, I have always simply drawn up a bill of sale and stuff, but since I happened to have a notary available to me, I actually made sure this bill of sale was notarized. I was so in love with this horse that I wanted to make sure no one could challenge the deal.
Since it became official and Logan could be considered “owned” by me, I quickly called my stall sign people and asked to have a stall sign made. I sent a photo of Logan and had them create a sign that would best depict his image as well as making sure the name following the word “owner” was mine. Becoming Logan’s “owner” was such a long fun process which I wouldn’t have wanted it any other way. Because it was done in such a playful way, I still felt like it was just a game or a joke. I ordered a sign to help me make it official. I have “owned” horses for years before buying their stall sign. I guess in their cases I was not wanting to admit that they were really staying for the long hall. One horse, Tyson, didn’t get a stall sign until I owned him for nearly seven years. That was the same for a pony I had, Matias. Even Chase didn’t get a stall sign for nearly a year. Logan though, he needed to be “MINE” right away.
OK, so since Logan was officially mine, months ago, I have ridden him twice. I taught him some cool ground stuff, but once he wasn’t a paid project, he didn’t continue to get the “training” time he was getting. That is a mental issue for me. My own horses always took a back seat to my “paid” projects. The reason I feel that happens is out of time guilt. I feel guilty that I spend so much time “working” for the paid parts of my dream, that I don’t want to take more time from my spouse “enjoying” my dream. I think I’m going to have to find a way to get over that. I have several horses that I should be doing more with, but because they belong to me and time with them would be more for pleasure than pay, I leave them be. I know that they are happy horses, but I know for sure my time with them would bring them joy. Hopefully buying Logan will bring me into a frame of mind of, money spent must be justified. I want to make Logan into a star. As much as Ritz is absolutely my prized boy on the farm, I think the flashiness of this giant grey will become a fan favorite… I just need to show the world who he is!
Winters are tough, but I wanted to see if I could ask for your help… What would you want to see Logan learn? If you would come to my farm, or a place I might be holding a demonstration, what would you want the horse used to be able to demonstrate? I have received challenges before by students. Some of these answers are pretty long, so if you’re interested in learning a bit about me, then by all means, read under the cut!
Q: What is your coffee order?
Coffee isn’t really my jam. I’m more of tea drinker. I like most teas and I vary a lot but my current order is a London Fog... it’s like... Earl Grey tea with Milk and sweetener. Pretty good.
Q: What is the coolest thing you’ve ever done?
I don’t really consider myself cool thing kind of person but, to me, two things stand out. First, I’ve seen the Mona Lisa up close like behind the rope >:) My Grandmother was still spry enough at the time to travel with only minor accommodations but the Louvre is massive so they offered her a wheelchair. She graciously accepted and the guards let us go behind the rope so she could see. An amazing and serendipitous opportunity. Second, I cosplayed Lumpy Space Princess from Adventure Time at Comic-Con with a couple of friends dressed as Marceline and Finn and we met the voice actors for Marceline and her Dad! It was pretty awesome. YES, I’m a nerd. Deal with it.
Q: Who has been your biggest mentor?
Honestly, it was the lady my parents hired to help me with my college transfer application. She was a tough love kind of person (which I needed at the time) and one of the only people to tell me that what I could do art and writing wise HAD VALUE. That was kind of a turning point for me in a lot of ways. I will always ALWAYS be grateful to her for that.
Q: What has been your most memorable writing project?
OKAY. So fanfiction wise. Observers. Pretty obvi. Academically, my thesis for my English degree. I wrote about the idea of ‘the other’ in the Mass Effect video game series (ALL THREE OF THEM.) It was very long and involved lots of gameplay for research purposes. Personally, the most memorable for me out of them all would be the first short story I wrote. It had a really interesting concept and was well received by my peer reviewers and that made me happy which made it memorable *shrug*
Q: What does your writing path look like, from the earliest days until now?
I’ve always been a bit of a scribbler in a lot of ways. I had a poem published after some sort of school contest or something and I kept a sort of haphazard journal for years. To be completely honest, I didn’t start writing anything that wasn’t for school until fan fiction. That’s not to say I didn’t like writing. I just always channeled it into an academic setting. Which meant my teachers got A LOT of strange papers from me... to name a few: Aliens in Mystic anthropology vs. Aliens in modern media, Shakespeare's Effects on Science Fiction, Stage or Screen: How well do musicals translate into cinema, A Cinematic Analysis of Monsoon Wedding, Van Helsing the Hugh Jackman movie related Bram Stoker’s Dracula... among others. I think I also wrote an entire philosophy paper about unicorns at one point. I was that kid that always took a prompt somewhere the teacher never really intended. It wasn’t until I transferred to a different college that I felt like I had anything important to say story wise... and then fan fiction became an almost frantic outlet to get all of it out- followed quickly by some original work and more poetry. It’s been kind of a wild ride from there.
Q: What is your favorite part about writing?
Honestly, the control. I love being able to do whatever the heck I want with characters- mine or canon. Since I don’t really plan all that much when I write it starts out more of an idea like what if this person existed. What if they were all in this place. And then I get to run with it however I want and that is the best feeling. Soo... Control and details. I love world building.
Q: What does a typical day look like for you?
It depends on day. I’m not an early riser and thankfully my job doesn’t make be get up early at the moment. Work days I’m up by 8:30, work by ten, work either 7 or 9 hours. Then home and SLEEP. Front facing sales jobs for introverts are exhausting TBH. I hate it. Looking for something different ASAP. Off days are more relaxed but I’m a caregiver for my Grandma so mostly cooking and cleaning and then chilling with my puppers/writing/whatever else catches my fancy.
Q: What does your writing process look like?
Mostly staring at a google doc for an embarrassing amount of time. I only seem to have two writing modes. Staring or greatly inspired. When I’m actually writing good chunks it usually because I imagined some bits of how it will go over a day or so and then it just flows. Other times it’s staring and rewriting things a million times. I suppose that's pretty normal.
Q: What’s the best advice you’ve gotten?
Letting go of toxic people in my life. I’m a big giver in a lot of ways and shy so I don’t make friends easily... unfortunately its led to a lot of situation where I’m taken advantage of or stomped on emotionally. It took me a long time to learn to be picky with who you surround yourself with.
Q: What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned?
You can’t force other people to change. I’ve struggled with my relationship with my mother for ages and in an amazingly clear moment, I realized that no matter how hard I tried, if she doesn’t want to make a change to be a positive and more sensitive person toward me then she won't. I can’t force her to change her ways no matter how healthy it would be for both of us. Once I accepted this, things got easier to handle. I see her less but I know exactly what to expect when I do and let things roll off me a little better than I used to.
Q: What advice would you give someone who wants to start writing?
Writing anything, even if it's short and horrible in your mind, is better than writing nothing. Really. When I’m struggling I force myself to at least write something because a bad first draft can only improve whereas no draft can do absolutely squat.

People ask me a lot of questions. Most of the time I’m happy to help.
But one question gets to me. In fact, when I hear it, I can’t help but get annoyed. Angry, even. Not because I don’t know the answer, but because people still have to ask it.
“How do I get more personal training clients?”
Really?
Consider that full-time personal trainers need just 20 to 30 clients to fill their schedules. It’s a benchmark every trainer should be able to meet. Moreover, if you do a good job and encourage referrals (I’ll have much more on that in a moment), you won’t need to do much outside marketing to keep your schedule full.
And yet the question gets asked, and often.
So to save you the time (and me the frustration), this article tells you once and for all how to get more personal training clients by following these marketing strategies:
1. Connect with neighborhood mavens to expand your network
2. Market your personal training services on social media
3. Ask for client referrals the right way
4. Follow up on every lead
5. Write content that’s worth sharing
Before I get into all that, let me ask you something.
Why don’t you have more clients?
When I ask trainers this question, I typically get one of the following responses:
• My gym doesn’t support me.
• I don’t know where to start. I can’t get personal training clients in front of me.
• I get personal training clients in front of me, but don’t know how to sell.
• Clients never seem to be able to afford personal training.
Sorry, but it’s time for some tough love. First and foremost, you must take ownership of your business.
This applies to all trainers, including those who work in gyms. You can’t count on your gym to feed you clients. Clients have to like you before they’ll pay you to train them. To get them to like you, you have to build relationships with them.
You are your own product. You’re in charge, and you have to act like it.
I have two rules for success, and I’ve followed them every day for nearly 10 years:
Rule #1 – Do a great job.
Rule #2 – Make sure everybody knows it.
Along with “people buy trainers, not training,” these are the foundational rules of marketing. Follow them while implementing the five strategies I’m about to describe, and you’ll get as many clients as you can handle.
How do you start? You already have. You’ve found your way to the PTDC. That means you’re different, and you’re better. Regardless of how experienced you are, the simple fact you’re here, making the effort, sets you apart.

That anger I mentioned earlier? I’ll admit I was projecting. Years back, when I started out, I too struggled to get personal training clients.
I made cold calls, canvassed door to door, even gave free demos at Lululemon. I hated it all (although the free clothes were nice). I’d started this job to train clients, not attract them. But if I wanted to grow my business, I realized I’d have to do both.
So I read every marketing book I could find. I tried every marketing tactic that seemed to apply. And I came to two conclusions:
1. I had to stand out.
2. I had to show my value before clients stepped in the door.
Two more quick things about attracting new clients (apparently, my best advice comes in pairs):
1. You don’t need personal training skill to do it. It’s more important to create the perception of skill and expertise. You’ll need to deliver results if you want those clients to stick around. But they won’t give you a chance if they don’t believe you have the skill before they see any proof of it.
2. Once you collect a few clients and prove you’re the best, they’re apt to brag about you. That leads to referrals. You’ll soon find yourself wondering why this used to seem so hard.
Now let’s talk about those marketing strategies.
1. Connect with neighborhood mavens to expand your network
Every neighborhood has “mavens,” well-connected people who hold influence in a network. I first learned about mavens from Malcolm Gladwell’s The Tipping Point and quickly put the concept to use, netting two clients in two weeks. (Each one bought a 50-session package.)
Who are the mavens? I’ve had success with four types.
Real estate agents
When affluent people move to a new neighborhood, one of the first things they want to know is which gym they should join. Who do they ask? The person who just sold them their house.
Call a few of them up and offer to add value to their service. Provide a gift certificate good for $500 worth of training (not “free sessions”; don’t ever devalue your service) to give to anybody who buys a house.
Medical professionals
The average American has a body-mass index just north of 29, and doctors are professionally obligated to remind their patients that they’re overweight. What if, instead of merely handing them a photocopied list of what they should and shouldn’t eat (a strategy with a success rate of zero and a 2 percent margin of error), they could hand them a card for a local trainer who’s especially good at helping people lose weight?
Do a little research to find doctors in your area who specialize in weight loss. Bariatric surgeons are an obvious choice. Also consider naturopaths and holistic practitioners; you know their patients are willing to invest in preventive care.
Set up a meeting to introduce yourself, and leave handouts (with your business card attached) for the doctor to give to her patients.
Hairdressers
Anyone with hair has gotten a haircut, and anyone who gets their hair cut knows one important fact about the people wielding the scissors: They talk. A lot. (Even the pope has noticed.)
And most of them, even in popular salons, don’t make much money. You can provide a chance to make a little more by offering a financial reward for any business they send your way.
Leave them with handouts and business cards they can set out in their waiting area. If they send you potential clients, be sure to reciprocate by sending referrals their way.
Baristas
This one’s simple. Drop in for a coffee every day. Wear your training uniform, smile, say thank you, and leave a tip.
A few days in, there’s a good chance the barista will ask if you “work at that gym down the street.” That’s your opening to start a conversation (not a sales pitch), and to encourage whatever interest she has about who you are, what you do, and where you work.
When you’ve developed some rapport, and you see an opening, ask if you can display one of your articles or leave some business cards on the counter. You’ll be surprised at how effective this can be.
2. Market your personal training services on social media
I don’t recommend training close friends and family. But leveraging them to help spread the word about you? That’s something you can and should do.
Two ways to pull it off (again with the twos):
Create a simple tip of the day
It could be something like, “Did you know your brain is 73 percent water? The average adult needs two to three quarts of water a day just to break even.” Or, “Push-ups too hard on your shoulders? Try a standing chest press with bands or a cable machine.”
The goal is to make it interesting enough for people to share.
Follow the tip with a soft call to action, asking people to send you their health, fitness, or nutrition questions. There’s nothing like answering someone’s question to establish you as an expert in that person’s mind.
Celebrate your client’s achievements
Tag the client in a post saying, “Awesome 200-pound deadlift today, John.” Or, “I just want to take a minute and congratulate Amber for her amazing dedication to her workouts. She brings it every time!”
All of John and Amber’s friends now know they’re working out and killing it. And, oh yeah, they have an awesome trainer, too.
3. Ask for client referrals the right way
Every time a trainer neglects to ask a happy client for a referral, a kitten dies. And you don’t want kittens to die, do you?
Seriously, it’s not complicated. It’ll feel awkward at first, but it’s a lot easier if you remember one important thing: Your clients like you and want to see you succeed. Once I explained to my clients that my business depended on referrals, they jumped at the opportunity to help.
Wait till the end of a session, when you’re stretching or foam rolling. Ask if you can chat about something. When the client agrees, tell him you have some new or anticipated gaps in your schedule. You’d like to give the client’s family or friends the first shot at those spots before you make them available to new clients.

Let’s say the client tells you about her sister, who’s struggling with an old shoulder injury. As it happens, you tell her, you have a lot of experience working with clients who have shoulder issues. It happened early in my career, and it’s a lesson I’ll never forget. Even today, years after I moved on from training clients to training trainers, following up with prospects is a crucial part of my business model.
That client is a textbook example of a “slow lead.” We all love his opposite, the fast-lane prospect who comes in the door ready to get started and willing to pay whatever we happen to charge. Those prospects are wonderful, but rare. Slow leads are the norm, and to convert them to clients, you have to be both patient and persistent, with a system in place to remind you to follow up on a regular basis.
That’s especially true when you’re just starting out. They know your schedule has plenty of open spots, which means you can’t speed up their decision-making process with fear of missing out.
But it also applies to experienced trainers. Take Gavyn Berntsen, for example, owner of Start Afresh Personal Training in New Zealand and an Online Trainer Academy graduate. Using an OTA email template, he reconnected with 100 former clients to wish them a happy new year.
In each email, he added a line unique to that client—something he remembered from their time training together.
Four of them immediately thanked him for the note, and told him they were ready to start training again.
The lesson he learned: “Just follow up with lost contacts. They actually want to hear from you.”
How to follow up with a lead
You don’t need to do anything fancy or clever. Simply check in every few weeks. Ask how they’re doing. Don’t try a hard sell; if that was going to work, they’d already be your clients.
And don’t make it spammy. Personalize it in small ways that show you remember who they are and why they came to you in the first place.
One easy way to follow up: holiday cards. Send them to current clients to help with retention and referrals, to former clients to remind them of how much they benefited from your workouts, and to future clients to show you’re ready for them whenever they’re ready for you.
5. Write content that’s worth sharing
People view writers as experts on the topics they cover. Why? No clue. I didn’t make the rules. I just know how to use them.
Self-publish a pamphlet you can give away at your gym. Start a blog. Send a weekly newsletter to your email list. Any of these options can serve as marketing material.
Here’s an example: Say a member of your gym attends a dinner party with a friend who complains about low-back pain. The person remembers seeing your pamphlet, or a blog post you printed out and pinned to the gym’s bulletin board, or a newsletter somebody forwarded.
Whatever it is, she passes it on to her friend.
Impressed, the friend pays you a visit. You’ve already positioned yourself as the expert, so that deal should be easy to close.

If you cook a nutritious meal, write about it. Learn a new exercise? You know what to do. From there, pick areas you’re proficient in, and pay attention to common problems people face.
Remember, everybody likes to brag when they know an expert. Your goal is to be the expert they brag about. The best way to do it is by creating content your clients and followers will want to share.
