Some tips for buying a used car for people that know nothing about cars

I’m a mechanic/auto shop owner. I figured I’d put some stuff together for anyone interested in buying a used car but doesn’t know anything about cars. Obviously the best option is to take it to an auto shop to have it thoroughly inspected by a professional before you buy it. The key word here is BEFORE you buy it. I don’t know how many people I’ve had come to my shop for an inspection after they bought it….ugghh. The $150 or so you spend is worth not buying something that may have thousands of dollars of problems. But if that’s not an option, here are some tips to help keep you from buying a lemon:

1-Buy a cheap OBD scanner/reader. You don’t need to spend a lot, as they’ll all do what you need here. A bluetooth OBD reader and the TORQ app for you phone seems to be pretty popular/good choice. Practice using it on some cars. Some of the stuff I'm going over may seem daunting, but if you practice it on a car a few times, you'll get the hang of it, and this will all make sense. You could be saving yourself thousands in repair here, so take a few hours to practice it. It's not hard once you do. You should be able to do all of the stuff I'm going to talk about with your scanner in under 5 mins total. You don’t have to worry about reading and interpreting data. The main thing you want to do is check for codes in the engine and transmission ECUs. ECU stands for Electronic Contrul Unit. Basically, it's the computer that controls the engine or transmission. They are sometimes referred to as ECM, or Engine Control Module, and TCM, or Transmission Control Module. Sometimes they'll be referred to as PCM, or Powertrain Control Module. This is what it's called when only one computer controls both the engine and automatic transmission. The PCM may be one physical computer, but logically, it's 2 computers. So if you connect your scanner to a PCM, you'll still see two separate options, one for engine, and one for transmission. Do note that if you have a manual transmission, there won't be a transmission computer.

So when you connect to each one, there should be no codes in either. If there are codes, there’s an issue. It may be minor, it may be major. Google it if you want, but not knowing what the codes mean, your best bet is to walk away. If your scanner is a better one, you can also check other modules (computers) for codes. However, it’s pretty common on newer cars, especially European, to find obscure codes in obscure modules. Normally they’re not an issue. Focus on the Engine and Transmission. ABS (antilock brakes) and SRS (safety restrain system...airbags, seat belts, etc) modules normally shouldn’t have codes lingering either. Make sure to also check after test driving. The codes may have been reset by the seller to hide a problem (more on that in the next paragraph). They may have returned during your test drive, so check again!

Use the scanner to check the monitors on the engine ECU/Computer. Monitors are a series of self checks that the ECU does on the engine. All applicable monitors should be set (passed/complete). They get reset when you clear the check engine light, or when you disconnect the battery (usually). If all of the monitors haven’t passed, then it’s quite likely the person selling it has reset the check engine light recently (may be trying to hide a problem), or there’s a problem that isn’t allowing the monitor to complete. Not a good sign. Walk away. To complete all of the monitors can take quite a few miles and sometimes several days. So there's a good window there for you to catch someone doing some hanky panky.

2. Crank the engine without starting it. What you want to do is listen to the engine during a continuous crank. On American cars and on Mazdas, this is easy, as they have what’s known as a Clear Flood Mode. You turn the key to the on position, wait a few seconds, depress the gas pedal all the way, then try to start it. The engine will crank away without starting for as long as you hold the key (or in the case of a push button start, until you hit the button again). If the engine starts, quickly let off the gas so you don’t revv up the engine too high and try it again. You’ll want to listen to it for a good 10 seconds or so. This is a very easy way to check compression on an engine. The main thing you hear when cranking an engine is the electric starter working to try and spin the engine. As a piston comes up and compresses the air, the starter has to work harder to spin the engine, and the speed/pitch of the starter changes. Once the piston comes back down, it’s easier to spin the engine, so the speed/pitch changes back, and then repeats as each consecutive piston moves up in the compression stroke. Every engine sounds different, but they all should have a very steady rhythmic starting noise. Kind of a WAAA WAAA WAAA WAAA WAAA. If one or more of the cylinders has low compression, you will hear the starter have an off-rhythmic sound that repeats. So for instance, if you have a 4 cylinder engine with one low compression cylinder, it would sound like WAAA WAAA WA WAAA WAAA WAAA WA WAAA WAAA WAAA WA WAAA etc. Every 4th pitch change will sound different than the other 3.

If you listen closely, you’ll hear the unsteady rhythm. Loss of compression is usually piston rings, valves, or head gasket. All costly. If the engine sounds funny when cranking, walk away.

If the car you’re looking at doesn’t have a clear flood mode, you can remove the fuel pump relay in the engine compartment fuse box, which turns off the fuel pump. Most cars have one, but some don’t. Some cars can be a real PITA to disable it from starting. Google the car you’re looking at with something like “YYYY Make Model clear flood” or “YYYY Make Model disable fuel pump” and see if there’s an easy way to achieve this. I'm sure there will be a Youtube video showing you exactly how to do this.

Practice this beforehand on cars you have access to if possible to tune your ear to the sound. You can also do this periodically on your own car to see if any problems are arising.

3. Check the fluids. All of the fluids will have minimum/maximum marks. If fluids are low, someone has not been maintaining the car well, or it has developed a leak. Not a good sign. When checking the engine oil, it should range from clear to black. If it looks like chocolate milkshake, there is a major problem. RUN AWAY. You can also smell the oil on the dipstick to see if it smells like gasoline. If it smells like raw gasoline, the engine is either injecting way too much fuel or you have bad piston rings. Either way they're bad. If the oil level is WAY above the full mark, like an inch or more, then either some other fluid is making it's way into the engine (very bad) or someone sucks at doing an oil change. Remember to check the oil with the engine off and on level ground. Some new cars don’t have dipsticks (mainly European). If so, you’re SOL. Check the coolant in the reservoir. It should be green, pink, red, yellow, orange, blue, or purple, depending on manufacturer. If it’s rusty, walk away. Remove the radiator cap (only if the engine is cold) and look at the cap and in the radiator. If you see any rust or chunky/gritty brown stuff, walk away. If it’s just water, walk away (be careful here, Ford’s yellow coolant almost looks clear). Check the automatic transmission fluid. For the most part, it should be red, but sometimes amber or green. It may be black. That’s dirty. Not a deal breaker, but they haven’t been keeping up on maintenance. It should not smell burnt, though. That’s bad. If it looks like strawberry milkshake, that’s really bad. Also, remember that you should check the level on automatic transmissions while the engine is running in Park and after driving it and getting the transmission good and hot. The only exception is most Hondas. That’s checked after driving but with the engine off. Google it for the car you plan on looking at to make sure. Many new cars don’t have a transmission dipsticks, so again, you’re SOL there.

4. Start the engine and listen for any noises. The engine should be cold. If it’s at operating temperature, the seller may have warmed it up to hide some cold start engine noises. Be wary. If it makes any noises, walk away.

5. Look for maintenance records. If it has consistent oil change records at an oil change place, at least they’ve been changing the oil. Unfortunately, oil change places only check easy profitable stuff. It’s better than nothing, though. If the records are all at an independent shop, that’s better. Indy’s will usually do a pretty thorough check up on the car when servicing it. If it has all dealer records, that’s the holy grail. Dealers will find any nick nack that’s wrong and upsell it. They also commonly don’t do thorough diagnostics (this is an unfortunate effect of the way dealer shops operate). So if it needed repairs, on top of having new parts that needed replacing, it may have other new parts that it didn’t even need. Plus those new parts will be good quality OEM parts, not chines junk of questionable quality.

6. Check that everything works on the car. Check the A/C, the heater, the windows, the locks, the mirrors, the head/parking/brake lights, etc. If the owner neglected to fix obvious problems, what else did they decide not to fix?

7. Look under the hood and look for any hokey work. Random zip ties holding things on, tape, broken plastic pieces, a battery that can move around if you push on it, wires hanging, etc. If it looks like unprofessional work has been done on what you can see, how bad is what you can’t see?

8. How does the car look? Is it dirty, full of scratches, stained? If the owner cares so little about the interior/exterior, they probably have the same attitude towards the mechanical part of it.

9. Check the tires. Aside from general condition, do they all match? If all the tires are different, they’re cheap/broke, and have probably cheaped out on a lot more than just tires. Lay your hand flat on the tire tread and light feel around the tires. If you feel a repeating pattern of flat spots/dips, you have suspension problems.

10. Try and stay away from used car dealers. Used car dealers get the majority of their cars from auctions. A lot of cars that go to auction are sent there by someone that doesn’t want it, usually because there are problems. Not all, but many. New car dealers send trade-ins that are too old or the wrong make to put on their lot, and some of those are decent. However, the small used car dealers usually buy the bottom of the barrel cars at auction. They’ll fix the minimum needed with the cheapest parts possible to maximize profit. They’ll make it look pretty, though. Good chance you’re buying a polished turd. Not all used car dealers are bad, though. Check reviews. Look at what they have on the lot. If they have a lot of high resale value cars on the lot, they're buying the good stuff at acution. If all of their cars are under $10k, with a lot under $5k, move on.

11. Obviously, test drive the car. Drive it at different speeds up to highway speeds. Brake easy, brake hard. Find a crappy road or railroad tracks to drive over. Make sure there are no noises or vibrations. Get it good and warm. When you’re done, open the hood and take a good whiff. Make sure there are no strong smells (like burning fluids or other things). Look under the car and see if anything is dripping or the bottom of the engine is covered in fluids (bring a flashlight, it can get dark under there). Don’t be alarmed if you see water dripping under the car at about the same area as the base of the windshield/firewall. If the A/C or defroster was on, that is just condensate from the A/C system. Touch it. If it’s not oily and looks/feels like water, it should be OK. If you’re test driving a manual car, the clutch engagement point should be somewhere in the middle of the clutch pedal travel. If it’s right at the top or right at the bottom, clutch repairs are in the near future.

12. This one is a little more advanced, but not too difficult. It’s also pretty important. You’ll need your OBD scanner. What you want to do is look at the engine data and search for the fuel trims. An engine computer injects fuel based on a bunch of sensor inputs. It has a base fuel map programmed into it that it references, based on those sensor inputs, and injects XXX amount of fuel. There is an oxygen sensor in the exhaust system that analyzes the exhaust gas and acts like a quality control inspector. It tells the computer whether it injected too much or too little fuel. The computer then makes adjustments to that base fuel map to make sure it’s injecting the proper amount of fuel. Those adjustments are called fuel trims. A 5% fuel trim would mean the computer had to add 5% more fuel than the base map. A -5% fuel trim would mean that the computer had to reduce fuel by 5% from the base fuel map. In a perfect world, fuel trims would be zero. However, that’s rarely the case. Fuel quality, different atmospheric conditions, engine wear, engine or sensor problems, etc, make it so that the base fuel map is never perfect, so the computer is always adding or subtracting fuel (usually it’s adding, but sometimes it’s subtracting). I don’t like to see a computer adding or subtracting more than 10% fuel. Any more than that and there may be a problem. Any more than 15-20% and there is definitely a problem.

So what you’re going to want to do is look at the data on the engine computer. You want to make sure you connect to the computer using the GENERIC OBD2 option on your scanner. Different car manufacturers will call these fuel trims by different names, and display the percentage in different ways. If you connect to the engine computer the standard way, you may be confused trying to find and read the fuel trims. But if you connect using the generic obd option, it’s always going to use a standardized display format across all vehicles. Some really cheap OBD scanners only connect using the generic OBD protocol. You’re going to see a long list of a bunch of different data. Scroll through until you find “short term fuel trim” and “long term fuel trim”. I'm not going to explain what the difference between those two data parameters are, as that doesn't matter here, and may end up being confusing. I'm just going to tell you what to do with the values you see.

Short term fuel trim, depending on your scanner, may be displayed as: Short term fuel trim, STFT, ST, or ST%

Long term fuel trim may be displayed as: Long Term Fuel Trim, LTFT, LT, or LT%

Let’s assume your scanner uses the more common STFT and LTFT designation. You’re going to see a number after the letters, so STFT1 and LTFT1. The number means the “bank” or side of the engine. A 4 cylinder engine only has one “side” so you’ll only see STFT1 and LTFT1. However, a V6 or V8 engine has two sides of the engine (3 or 4 cylinders on one side, and 3 or 4 cylinder on the other side, hence the V6 or V8). The computer controls fuel independently for each side of the engine, so you’ll see a STFT1 and LTFT1 for one side of the engine, and STFT2 and LTFT2 for the other side. Don’t be alarmed if you’re looking at a V6 or V8 engine and you only see STFT1 and LTFT1. Many late 90s cars and some early 2000s cars didn’t control fuel separately for each side of the engine, and lumped both sides into one bank.

When looking at the short term and long term fuel trims, you’ll notice the long term fuel trim number stays pretty steady, but the short term fuel trim number may change a lot. This is normal. What is important to note is that they are cumulative. So if STFT=4 and LTFT=3, then your total fuel trim is 7%. Let’s take a look at some examples on a V8:

STFT1 : 3 ... STFT2 : 6

LTFT1 : 2 ... LTFT2 : 1

So the total fuel trim on bank 1 is 5% (3+2) and the total fuel trim on bank 2 is 7% (6+1). Each bank is below +/- 10%. That’s pretty good.

STFT1 : -5 ... STFT2 : 3

LTFT1 : 3 ... LTFT2 : 1

Bank 1 fuel trim is -2% (-5 +3) and bank 2 is 4% (3+1). Again, that’s good.

STFT1 : 6 ... STFT2 : 7

LTFT1 : 10 ... LTFT2 :15

Bank 1 fuel trim is 16% (6+10) and bank 2 is 22% (7+15). That’s not good. Walk away from this one.

Here's one more that's a littlte different:

STFT1 : -20 ... STFT2 : -20

LTFT1 : 22 ... LTFT2 : 20

Hey, 2% and 0% total fuel trim on each bank. SWEET! this car is running almost perfect! Well not really. Why is the LTFT adding 22% but then the STFT is taking a bunch of it back? There may be an intermittent issue going on here. So add the absolute values together as well (treat -20 as 20) and see what that total is. Here we have 42 and 40. There's some interpretation required here that you'd need some experience to do, but I'd say anything over 25 when adding absolutes is cause for concern.

Check these numbers with the engine running at idle, and rev up the engine and hold it at about 2500rpms and check it there. Like I said, you may see the STFT number change pretty quickly, so just use the average of the numbers you see for that one. If you have someone with you, you can have them check the numbers while you drive as well.

Practice this on a car you have access to beforehand.

13. Last and not least, don’t trust the person selling the car. Trust your eyes, your ears, and your instinct. You don’t know this person, they may be lying about the car, or try and tell you that the thing you’re worried about is no big deal, it’s just this or that. Or they had a guy check it out and it’s a really easy/quick fix. Be patient and find the right car. If something is fishy or doesn’t seem right, move on to the next car. A car is a pretty big expense. Most people budget for the purchase price of a car and don’t consider there may be considerable extra expense in fixing major problems. Minimize the possibility of those extra expenses by inspecting the car the best you can.

I would recommend running through these things, and any others you want to add, on your current car, your parents’ cars, friends’ cars, etc. Do it several times. Get comfortable in making these checks so that when you’re doing them in front of some stranger on their car, you won’t forget anything.

The People Story - Episode 1: The presence of the present

Hello! Here’s the first part of my story! :D Please enjoy! Put under “read more” due to it being a long one.

The year was 2119, and things were much different than the past. The past stays as history to the people in 2119, and the future is now. Flying cars, machines no man before could make.

As the time ticked on one more for the next day, a man slowly wakes up from his bed, the effects of the sleeping pill slowly wearing off. He sits up and glances around the room. His same old room, his same old life.

“Hey, Holo. Give me the time.” He mumbles while sitting up to rub his eyes.

“Oh, Master Henry, you must have forgotten your sleeping pill is set to wake you at the right time, but I can still certainly tell you the time.” The hologram showed up, there in blocky text it said 7:00 AM. Henry adjusts his eyes to look at the time presented to him.

“Alright, about a hour to get ready for today’s meeting… You can go now.” Henry stood up as the hologram disappeared. He pulls up his pants to keep them from falling, the pair of pants he has not taken off in two days.

Henry grabs his mug as he walks into the kitchen and puts it under a tap. A scanner scans the barcode in the mug and automatically fills it with coffee. He puts it on a cup holder hover and walks off as the cup follows him. He takes a sip as he plops down on the couch tiredly.

Just as he sits, a door slides open very quickly. Stomps get louder and louder as his daughter Anna walks down to the living room, readying herself, then diving right onto Henry. Henry grunts as he lightly pushes Anna aside.

“Hi dad!” Anna greets him with a cheesy wave. “Shouldn’t you be getting ready?”

“Hey, I’m dressed and I got my coffee. I’m prepared for anything!” He justifies as he drinks more coffee. “You should be getting ready for school, miss.”

Anna shrugs, obviously giving up. “Alright, you win. Make sure you really are prepared though! Cya!” She shouts as she walks to her room but stops at the door frame. “By the way, check the time.” She enters her room.

Henry looks up at the clock, 7:30 AM. “Oh fuck, I gotta go! Anna!” He falls his daughter’s name. “Please don’t skip school again, and take the bus!” Henry yells to her as he leaves the house and goes to his flying car. He turns on auto drive as he leans back and drinks more coffee. “God… That girl can be crazy sometimes.” He wonders as he reads the newspaper on his cell phone, iGlass 7.

Headline: Elementals going missing in downtown Flintwood. No evidence for their disappearance, law enforcement still searching for clues to their whereabouts. More information will be coming out as the investigation continues.

Henry shrugs, looking back out his front window and seeing the location getting close. He puts his phone away and goes back to manual drive. Finding a good place to park his car, he gets out and walks into the big building with glass windows everywhere.

He stands at the door to the elevator, waiting for it to open. A woman and a man walk out, wearing business suits and carrying briefcases. Henry rolls his eyes, and goes inside the elevator. “Alright, floor 7, wasn’t it?” He mumbles to himself as he presses the floor 7 button, hoping it was right.

The elevator rises higher and higher until it makes it to Henry’s floor. He takes a step out, and looks around at the professional business people. He looks down at himself, wearing his usual clothes like he always does. Feeling unprofessional, he blushes slightly.

Henry makes it through the hallways and finds exactly what he’s looking for, the office meeting room. He takes a deep breath and opens the door to go in.

No one is there, just Henry. A code menu appears in front of Henry. Henry shrugs and types the code he remembers. The meeting table begins to glow, and rise up to create a portal for Henry to enter in. He gladly enters the portal and enters into the E.M.R, short for Elemental Meeting Room.

“Well, you’re surely late.” The light king says, standing up and walking towards him. He gives Henry a icy, cold glare down at him. “Please, don’t be late again. We nearly started without you.” He walks back to his seat and sits down.

“S-Sorry, Aalok.” Henry gulps and sits in his respected seat, his fire throne. Covered with streams of wood painted like Magma, ash and obsidian decorated around it. “So, what’s the meeting about?”

“Well, glad you could ask.” The light king adjusts his collar proudly as he coughs. “Ahem. I gathered you all here to discuss about the earth kingdom. How it crumbled down and how the king was taken down.”

“Don’t forget the queen, pale ass.” The darkness queen mumbles, crossing her arms and showing a aura of not wanting to be here.

Henry shrugs at her poor behaviour and looks back at Aalok. “Sure, whatever Miss.” Aalok continues where he left off. “Anyways, Their legacy was strong. I’m proud to say they were a very, very incredible kingdom. Keeping the balance of earth strong!” Quite surprisingly, somebody raises their hand. Aalok shrugs. “What?” He asks to the raised hand.

The water queen answers. “From what I learnt in my history books, the king and queen were the creators of this very meeting room. They had a lot to do with some of our traditions and kingdoms that still stand to this day!” She adds onto what he said.

“Yeah, exactly Wai. We need to make a plan in honour of them. To honour their work and what they’ve done to help us be who we are today.” Aalok goes on. “I have a special idea that will be very helpful to complete that.”

Betty shrugs and rolls her eyes. Henry listens, interested in the plan. His attention snaps and looks over to Brise. “I know too!” Brise starts rambling. “We should totally build a giant statue of the queen! She was so nice and wonderful from what I heard of so we can totally do tha-”

“No, Brise, that simply wouldn’t do.” Aalok cuts off Brise.

“Oh! Maybe we can have a celebration for her! I can help supply snacks! Maybe some chocolate, her favourite.” Wai wonders out loud about her idea.

“How do you know that’s her favourite?” Henry asks. “You’ve never met her.”

“Oh! I’ve read it in a book. A book about her legacy.” Wai responds. “I can give you the book if you want!”

“Oh, no thanks. I’m not a reading type.”

“Alright then, you’re missing out on a good read.” She grins and looks off from him. Henry sighs.

Aalok, frustrated already, shrugs loudly to get everybody’s attention. “You guys never listen, do you? Oh well, it’s a Friday. Meet at the tree by Monday, when you guys are actually willing to listen.” He stands, and walks off while pulling the light queen behind him.

Everybody sits there, watching him leave. Thinking about how frustrated he was, but being too nervous to fix it. Betty sighs and stands, pulling a lollipop out of her mouth.

“You guys really are some brain washed fools, aren’t you?” She leaves, throwing her lollipop out in the trash as she walks over to her portal.

“Yeeeesh, what’s wrong with her these days? She’s been so grumpy during these meetings!” Brise mutters. “I miss when she was able to laugh at my jokes.” He leans to his husband for support. His husband simply pats his shoulder.

“Look, I’m sure it’s just a phase. Maybe her period?” Henry questions.

Wai snaps her view to Henry, looking offended at his comment.

“Sorry, that was wrong of me. Look, maybe this is just temporary. I don’t get why she has to be so rude to Aalok though, he literally wants to do something very caring for the dead earth rulers!” Henry insisted. He sits back down and thinks for a minute. “I still wanna know what the idea he wants to do is. I’d like to know.” He rests his cheek on his hand, the other one tapping on the table.

Hours later, Henry returned home. Henry walks up to his automatic food maker and summons in fast food burger. He sits at the dinner table and begins to eat it. “Mmmmm. Man, I really needed that.” Henry exclaims, then takes another bite. The sound of the flying bus pulls up in front of the house, Henry looks over to see Anna coming out from the bus and heading home. She bursts the door open.

“Hey dad! Uhh, how did your meeting go?” Anna questions.

“Oh, it went alright, I guess.” He takes another bite. “Oh what am I saying? It was shitty. We got literally nothing done. Aalok just got angry and left!” Henry rants on with his mouth full. Anna gently pats his shoulder.

“Dad, quit eating with your mouth full, you’re gonna choke. Also, that sucks. Maybe going to visit Billy would help?” Anna said.

“What’s up with Billy right now?” Henry asks.

“Oh, you know. He’s been exploring some new hobbies, shit like that. Painting, you get the jest.”

“Oh.” Henry shrugs, looking at the clock. “We do have some time to go over and see him.”

“OH FUCK YEAAAA!” Anna rushes to her room and runs back out, holding a book. “LET’S GO SEE BIG BRO BILLY!” She kicks Henry’s thigh, then runs to the car. Henry shrugs and gets up slowly, following after her.

He sits down in the driver’s seat, Anna sitting next to him. “Hey, Anna, remember how to start the car?” Henry asks.

Anna rolls her eyes, in a over exaggerated type of way. “Yeah dad, of course.” She takes his key and starts the car. The car begins to float. A hologram shows up, giving options on where to go. Henry presses Billy’s house to drive to. The car begins to drive off to his house.

Anna taps her lap as she waits to see Billy. Henry sighs, and leans back. “I looked at the news this morning, elementals going missing. What’s up with that?” Henry asks.

“Oh, I don’t know. Kids at my school were talking about it. They’re saying a horrrribbble beast is kidnapping them! Ooooooo!” She giggles, her scary persona crumbling. “Seriously though, we’ve been worried. One of my classmates in science didn’t show up, she was the smartest in the class!”

“Don’t think negatively, she might of been sick.” Henry responds. “I’m sure she’ll be alright.” He takes out his iGlass and looks at more articles. “Even if she is missing, she might be safe.”

“I guess.” Anna leans back, watching the cars in front of her driving. “Man, I wish we lived closer to Billy.”

“Yeah, me too. He loves the big city though, especially since he found a boyfriend there a year ago, he’s been very independent.” Henry smiles, thinking about Billy. His smile fades off after a minute. He sighs, kind of sadly. Then Henry shakes his head and continues on driving.

They pull up to Billy’s house, a well kept house with a beautiful, small tree in front of their house. By the time Henry gets out of his seat, Anna has already made it to the front door. She knocks repeatedly, until Billy opens the door. Anna punches Billy.

“Owch! Anna!” Billy gasped as he grabbed his chest.

“Oops, Sorry Billy!” She apologizes as she hugs him. Billy hugs her back, accepting the apology.

Billy looks up to see Henry. “Oh, hey dad!” He goes up to him, smiling as brightly as ever. “I heard you had a meeting today. How’d that go?”

“Ughhhh, it was definitely shitty at best.” Henry groans as he rests his head on Billy’s shoulder.

“Hey. you wanna come inside? We got lunch all ready.” Billy offers. Henry accepts, and follows Billy inside. Henry smells the freshly summoned food sitting at the table, ready to be eaten.

“You’re very lucky we got a lot of food, my boyfriend and I were gonna save the rest for leftovers.”

Henry walks over to the dining table, seeing Billy’s boyfriend sitting at the table. “Oh! Hello Mr. Helvete.” He greets.

“Shane, I really hope you don’t mind my dad and sister joining in.” Billy says as he sits next to Shane.

“Oh, it’s okay. Maybe we can have our ‘romantic date’ for dinner.” Shane chuckles and holds Billy’s hand. Billy blushes and giggles too. “Alright, now let’s eat before this gets cold.”

The family begins to eat, enjoying the delicious meal that was prepared for them. Billy ate slowly, wondering about the taste. Anna looks up to Billy and grins.

“Hey, Bill! I bought that book that we found at the library. You know, the study of food? Whatever it was called.” She tells him.

“Oh sweet, thanks Anna!” He grins. “I don’t know, lately I’ve been wondering what’s been up with our meals. It seems quite odd to me.”

“Like how?” Shane asks, shoving a piece of meat into his mouth and slowly chewing.

“Like, uhhhhh.” Billy glances at Anna. She hands him the book and he begins flipping the pages. “Aha! Here it is."

“Over developing years, scientists have conducted experiments to automatically summon food in homes so cooking isn’t a requirement. After many, many failed experiments, a new hope was raised to get the system going after teleportation had been invented. After using teleportation, the mission had finally been completed. Machine builds the food, and it stays ready until the requestor teleports it over.”

“Ahhhh, I see. That’s very interesting. I like our food though, it’s nice.” Shane responds as he continues to eat. Billy sighs and goes back to his food too.

“I know there’s like, illegal restaurants and shit.” Henry adds. “Ever been to one?”

“Hmmmm, I don’t think I have. I mean, they’re illegal after all. If anybody’s found out, they’ll be thrown into jail for years!” Billy sighs. “People say cooking is gross, that the automatic food maker is a better alternative.”

“That’s a good point.” Henry finishes his meal and wipes his face with a napkin. “Thank you for letting us stay to eat, guys.”

“Oh you’re welcomed, dad.” Billy responds. He glances out the window. “Sorry I couldn’t come to the meeting this time, by the way. I’ll try to make it to the next one. Where is it?”

“It’s at the tree, ya know. The Maple Tree.” Henry mumbles. “I think we’re trying to do something to honour the earth king and queen. Don’t know though, he got pissed and ran off before he could say.”

“Ah, I get you. I’ll definitely join in.” Billy says. “Shoot me a message when it’s time to go, I don’t usually do much since I don’t have a job yet.”

“Alright, cool.” Henry stands up. “Alright Anna, we should head home now.”

“Awwwwww man! Alright fine.” Anna stands up, and stretches her back. “I’m ready.”

Henry and Anna make it to the door. “Bye son, bye Shane.” Henry waves goodbye to them.

They leave to go back to the car. The car starts and they choose to go home. Henry sighs again and looks at the articles one last time.

Henry sighs. “They think ten people have been taken by the exact same person. Isn’t that crazy? I don’t think anything of the sort had happened in such a long time.” Henry begins to ramble on about a kidnapping event when he was younger, trying to avoid saying the name of the lost victim.

“That’s cool.” Anna says, distracted by a game she plays on her iGlass. Henry chuckles slightly, seeing how she wasn’t listening but trying to. He leans back in his seat, watching the sky road.

He begins to think about the earth king and queen. Their legacy, their honour. They, however, were dead. Life can’t be brought back, the dead is dead. Why are we talking about them now when it’s been over 100 years by now. He sighs, happy that at least they were gonna pay some respects.

INCREDULOUS

Xiaomi entered into the Indian market in 2014 through Redmi 1s, a low budget friendly device.Since then it has actually started to conquer the Indian market. Xiaomi is winning the hearts of the people mainly because it provides Top Notch Specs at Affordable Price.

In August 2016,Xiaomi launched the successor of Redmi 2 i.e. Redmi 3s.This mobile comes in two variants- 32gb+3gb@8999 and 16gb+2gb @6999.Lets dive into its full review-:

Overview

The Xiaomi redmi 3s sports a 5 inch HD 294 ppi pixel density IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen.It runs on MIUI 8 out of the box.It features Snapdragon 430 SOC chipset which is a Octa-core 1.4 GHz containing Cortex-A53 CPU and has Adreno 505 GPU.It comes with a massive battery of 4100 mah which can easily last for a day.The redmi 3s comes with all the important sensors like Accelerometer, gyro, proximity, compass.It has a hybrid sim slot which can be mood spoiler for many people.The Redmi 3s version has 16GB internal memory and 2GB RAM,while the 3s Prime sports 32GB internal and 3GB RAM and a fingerprint scanner.It is Available in three colour variants-Gold, Dark Gray, Silver.

Design and Screen

After launching Redmi Note 3 and Mi Max,Xiaomi has finally settled for a pocket friendly device.Its 5inch HD display with a pixel density of 294ppi is a delight.It also has Reading mode, which prevents eye fatigue by reducing blue light rays from the screen. Color temperature can also be adjusted based on your preference - warm, standard, or cool.Frankly speaking,the Reading Mode is nothing special.It just turns your screen yellowish and I personally don't feel reduces eye fatigue.Plus the Auto Brightness sensor were not apt.The brightness adjustment took sometime to adjust which made me turn it off ultimately. Xiaomi also does not specify whether it uses Cornis Gorilla Glass or Asahi. So its recommended to use a tampered glass.

Dimensions- 139.3mm(L)*69.6mm(W)*8.5mm(H)

We are looking at the fingerprint scanner at the back with plastic antennae bands at the top and bottom.The power and volume buttons are on right.It features a IR blaster which connects to all of devices easily.The 3.5mm jack is at the top and speakers are at the back.The speakers are not properly placed and do not sound good.They are in fact less louder than its predecessor Redmi 2.It looks in a lot of ways similar to Redmi Note 3.The weight distortion is perfect and gives a good premium in hand feel(although it is slippery).Overall the Redmi 3s(Also Prime)is a good looking device with a nice built.The only thing that's awful is the speaker.

Hardware and Performance-

This is one of the areas which matters the most to the users and believe me Xiaomi has done a commendable job in this area.For years the low budget mobile segment suffered from some lag issues and did not provide a smooth gaming experience but the tables have turned with the new Snapdragon 430 SOC 64 bit Octa Core chipset paired with ARM Cortex A57 and Adreno 505 GPU. Xiaomi has redefined the low budget mobile segment.Games like NOVA 3,Asphalt 8,Mortal Kombat X and FIFA 16 were running without any glitch on the Prime version.I tried playing these games on 2GB RAM version and i was not disappointed.The games were very much playable but there were some occasional lags.

Camera-

The Redmi 3s offers a 13mp camera with f/2.0 and PDAF and a 5mp front camera with f/2.2 aperture.Both the camera's allow 1080p recording.But the recording from front camera was more or less awful.But considering the price point of this mobie its not that bad.Due to lack of Optical Image Stabilisation And dual LED flash the images in low lighting conditions were not good.But images come out to be better in good lighting conditions.The HDR mode actually sucks on this mobile.It means that its not only gonna take longer time but also the image will be blurry.You have to actually take a lot of shots to actually get a decent photo.My advice don't use the HDR mode.

The front camera, I dont know why but always doubles my age.The selfies i took were okayish.Don't expect anything out of the blue.Overall i would say that the camera performance was good enough according to the price point.Avoid using the HDR mode and using the cam in low lighting conditions.Here are some actual shots-

Other Aspects-

Although camera was not something to brag about but the performance and the battery life on this device are praiseworthy.The battery could easily last a day even when i used the mobile intensively.Hats off to the battery life.But it takes around 2.5 hours to charge the battery from 0% to 100%.The MIUI 8 runs fluently without any glitches.The device wont disappoint you in overall day to day usage.Sometimes the pre-installed apps would crash occasionally(especially exlporer) which I reported to Xiaomi but nothing happened.Users cannot uninstall the pre installed apps.The 3.5mm jack on the top gives a flat output.It is inferior to its predecessor Redmi 2.The external spekaers are also not loud enough.The call and voice reception quality was fine and it supports voice over LTE.Bottomline-I would definitely advise you to buy this mobile but would recommend you to go for the 2gb RAM version and save your INR2000 bucks as there is a difference of only 1000 b/w Redmi 3s prime and Redmi Note 4.Frankly Redmi note 4 is a much much better deal.You can buy 3s prime only if don't prefer the big size of Redmi Note 4 otherwise stick to RN4.

And once again OPPO reiterates style as its pitch with a “Flaunt It Your Way” tagline. However since its 2020 and the market is highly competitive where every other phone looks up to snuff, we all crave a consummate proposition. After all, if you spend money, you want the money’s worth, right?

Over the course of using the Oppo F15 as my daily driver, I have raked in some thoughts which will address this concern. So, without slacking any time, let’s get to the Oppo F15 review. By the end, you’ll hopefully know whether it packs the required punch for the price you pay.

Oppo F15 Review: Build, Design and Display

The phone comes in 2 color choices viz. Lightening Black and Unicorn White. Ours was the latter one. It looks like a block of flavored ice or marble, which elicits attention.

Due to its polycarbonate build and slim profile, it’s quite wieldy. The buttons on either side are easily reachable and they offer a good response. And it’s always pleasant to see a USB Type-C socket and a 3.5mm audio jack.

The facade is as familiar as one could get with a teeny waterdrop notch and mild margins engulfing the display. That said, I felt Oppo could’ve trimmed a little black off the chin. But overall, cheers to the design dynamics.

Coming to the display, the 6.4-inch AMOLED panel is impressive, be it in terms of color attributes, viewing angles, so on and so forth. Both in and outdoors, I enjoyed reading on this screen. A fingerprint reader sits beneath the screen which works quite well. Lastly, the phone’s DRM L1 certified which means you can immerse yourself into an ocean of high-res OTT content.

Oppo F15 Review: Performance

For some weird reason, F15 bears an antique MediaTek chip. Gee Oppo, using a chip of yore is a bore. Especially, when you can get another P70 phone for half the price or even less.

The oldie runs as you would expect, bolstered by 8GB of RAM and 128GB of UFS 2.1 storage. The experience is, even more, marred by the ColorOS. It’s still Android 9 and TBH, Oppo’s skin job on Google’s vision for Android is definitely not my taste. Can’t cut slack to late Android updates, the convoluted mess of the settings menu, and over 20 junk apps. Seriously, you would find three browsers and similar bloat, which begs the question – Why? Overall, it’s jarring, outdated and outmoded. If you’re wondering the whereabouts of ColorOS 7, sadly F15 has got no mention in the announced timeline.

Having let off so much steam, it’s time for the good things now. Yea, even with all the gripes, the Oppo F15 handled the day-to-day activities like Instagramming, Spotifying, Netflixing, and Googling with no fuzz. As for the gamers out there, this ain’t a heavy-lifter. You need not raise your hopes up. But, its Okie dokie for casual gameplay. In my sessions, PUBG and Asphalt 9 ran fine under HD settings or medium graphics.

Let me say this forthright – the 4000mAh offers a satisfactory mileage. You see that’s a genuinely liberating feeling to have. And when the phone asks for the charge, fill the tank using the in-box 20W VOOC 3.0 Flash Charger. It takes approx half-past an hour to go full.

There’s a mono grille that does a fine job in terms of loudness. Rest, there isn’t much to speak on the sound output. BTW, Bluetooth 5.0 is an absence worth noting.

Oppo F15 Review Verdict: Should you Buy?

Oppo chose a dog and pony show for the F15 launch, which might have curbed some of the enthusiasm, to begin with. Look F15 is definitely dressed to kill, but the MediaTek P70 chip turns out to be a buzzkill. It seems as if while putting together the phone recipe, Oppo missed the core ingredient. If you’re particular about gaming, anything with Snapdragon 730, 730G or even MediaTek’s G90T would serve you better.

Thus, Oppo F15 misses the OPPOrtunity to be a well-rounded sub-20k phone. In light of its uneven price to performance ratio, you may consider alternatives like the Realme X2, Redmi K20, Redmi Note 8 Pro, etc instead – which are all online-first phones.

If you prefer buying from offline stores, the OPPO F15 makes a lot more sense and is worth considering.

World Nomads is the most popular travel insurance for budget travelers. I used them on my first trip to Europe and they get pretty good reviews from fellow travelers. And it doesn’t cover just health issues — it also covers trip cancellations, theft, car insurance, and a few other things. Signing up is quick and easy.

Airfare and Flights

There are hundreds of airfare websites so it’s easy to get lost down that rabbit hole. Don’t be one of those people that spend dozens of hours trying to save $10 on a $1000 ticket — remember, your time is valuable.

That’s why I’ve gathered the best booking sites below. Using these resources there is a 95% you’ll be able to find the best deal without spending countless hours in front of your computer.

If you want to get mired down in the nitty-gritty details of trying to save every penny on airfare then you should check out FlyerTalk.

Momondo is quietly an excellent airfare search engine that a lot of people don’t know about. Many times I find the best price here — especially for international flights/flights within Europe. They also have a few extra tools to help fine-tune your search.

Sky Scanner is the other site I always check when I’m looking for airfare. I’ve found that Sky Scanner is one of the best when it comes to looking at tickets within Europe.

I’m still a fan of Kayak and I always check them out when I’m looking for tickets. It’s especially good for finding tickets to Europe but it rarely finds the best intra-Europe tickets.

It’s Google so you know it has to be good. Google actually owns the software that all other airfare booking sites use. I like how Google Flights shows the price of flying into a number of airports around Europe — which is nice if your itinerary is flexible.

CheapOair excels at last minute bookings… but its prices are nothing special in most other cases.

Scott’s Cheap Flights is an awesome email list that sends you daily flight deals that are super cheap. There is both a free and premium service — I highly recommend this service.

Airfare Watchdog is great because it monitors airfare deals and then sends you alerts when it finds something. This is a great service if you’re flexible with your travel time.

Not all seats on an airplane are created equal so before you choose your seat you should check out SeatGuru. It gives a rating for every seat on every plane so you can get the best seat possible.

While it may suck, sometimes you just have to sleep in an airport. Sleeping in Airports list just about every airport and tells you the best place to catch some zzz’s.

Ground Travel

Taking the train is arguably the best way to travel through Europe — but don’t forget about driving and long distance coaches!

Rail Europe sells rail passes and train tickets for most of Europe. Rail Passes can be a good deal if you take a lot of trains so you should do a little research on that option. Rail Europe also sells point-to-point train tickets but their prices are sometimes higher than if you were to buy directly from each country’s rail network website. Usually, you’re paying extra for the convenience of not having to deal with buying tickets for a foreign website.

Eurail sells rail passes (the same pass as Rail Europe) but I think they do a little better job of helping you choose which pass is the best option. I don’t think you’ll find much price difference between the two sites but they sometimes have special offers.

Seat 61 (aka The Man in Seat 61) is a no-nonsense website that covers just about every aspect of rail train in Europe. The entire site is run by a single English dude that obviously has a deep passion for rail travel. So, if you have a question about train travel, this is a great place to start.

The German National Rail Service website has train schedules for every train route in Europe (but it only shows prices for routes for German trains). It’s crazy.

Most major US car rental companies also operate in Europe — and Auto Europe searches all those companies for the best deals. I used them when I rented a car in Paris to visit Normandy and the entire experience went smoothly. Europcar is another similar site that you can check out to compare prices.

BlaBlaCar is “Airbnb” of ride-sharing and it’s exploding throughout Europe. The idea is simple — drivers post their travel itinerary and how much they’re charging for a seat. Riders then log in and search for drivers that are taking the same route. And, of course, prices are usually much cheaper than the train and you get a chance to meet a local.

Long Distance Coach Travel

There are a number of long-distance coach services throughout Europe. The largest is Eurolines and they have routes that crisscross the continent. Megabus is a discount carrier that serves much of Western Europe and they often have a limited number of super cheap fares (i.e. under $10).

BusBud is a solid website that searches multiple coach services for the best price/route.

It’s no surprise that I love Airbnb. It’s my first choice when I travel and I’ve rented an apartment over a dozen times (I can’t remember the last time I stayed in a hotel).

Hostel World has been my go-to hostel booking site for 10 years. They are the largest hostel booking site and they make finding the perfect hostel simple. Alternatively, there is also hostel bookers (but they’re owned by HostelWorld so I haven’t found a difference).

Sometimes it’s nice to stay in a hotel and Booking.com has made my shortlist of hotel booking sites.

Priceline is nice because it lets you bid on hotels. It does take a little work and there are deals to be found out there.

No other company has changed the face of travel more than Trip Advisor. So it’s no surprise that you can book a hotel on Trip Advisor. They pull in results from multiple booking engines so it’s a great place to start your search.

Want to meet people and not spend anything on accommodation? Check out Couchsurfing! It actually takes a bit of time, luck, and flexibility to find someone to host you but it’s possible.

Whether you’re looking for a place to set up a tent or want to rent a cabin, camping can be a great way to slash your accommodation budget — or at least escape the city. The two main campsite finders are CampingInfo and Eurocamp.

Each country usually has a specific website for camping so just google camping + country and you’ll find something (i.e. Camping France).

Travel Planning and Inspiration

Rick Steves Travel Videos

Good ol’ Rick Steves has all his videos posted on Hulu (see here). Additionally, he has many full episodes available for free on his Youtube channel. Personally, I like watching videos to get inspiration for places to visit.

WikiVoyage is a crowdsources travel site that is basically the Wikipedia of travel. You’ll find a wealth of free information on each country and just about every city.

Reddit has numerous subreddits dedicated to travel.

Guidebook Websites

The major travel guidebooks also have free information on their websites. Don’t expect super in-depth information (that’s what their guidebooks are for) but they’re still worth taking a look.

Timeout City Guides — Timeout actually has a lot of good information about many major cities in Europe. The information skews to a young and hip audience, so it’s a good place to find trendy bars, clubs, restaurants, hip boutiques, and art shows.

Frommer’s — Solid source of basic travel information.

Lonely Planet — The Lonely Planet website has good general travel information for many cities and countries but their best feature is their Thorn Tree travel forums.

Rick Steves — Pretty good destination information and videos. Rick Steves is geared toward middle age Americans but a lot of the information is solid for all travelers.

Trip Advisor has a wealth of user reviews for restaurant and attraction reviews. I don’t rely on it exclusively because it’s well know to be full of fake reviews but I do think you can get a pretty good idea of a place by reading all the reviews.

Atlas Obscura is a website dedicated to the weird, strange, and off-the-beaten-path sights in cities throughout the world.

Rome2Rio is a journey planner that displays all the methods for getting between two (or more) places. For example, type in Paris to Budapest and it will tell you how to get there via air, train, bus, car, or a combination of multiple methods. It will also display an estimated cost and travel time.

It isn’t perfect so it probably misses some route options but it’s still a great planning tool.

Volunteer + Free Food and Accommodation

Looking for a different travel experience? Consider volunteering. There are a ton of people looking for volunteer help (usually manual labor) but they provide food and lodging. The three main websites to check out are WWOOFing, Help X and Work Away.

XE.com is a great site for easily checking current exchange rates.

Major tips for proper note keeping using EVERNOTE

You’ve probably heard of Evernote. Some call it a note-taking service, or an organization tool, or an archiving platform, but none of those terms are enough to convey just how much you can do with it. Evernote is, quite simply, an online spot to store anything and everything you might find of interest, to read or utilize later. The more you add, the more useful it becomes.

You can add to or access info on Evernote from the Web, full desktop programs for Windows (which we give a full five stars in our review) or via mobile devices.

There are also Evernote extensions for Web browsers, a handwriting and drawing app for iPads, even hardware that makes it especially helpful to input hard copy info into the service, including a special scanner.

You can begin with its free service just like I have being using it for the past years, or get a paid version.

1. Clip the Web

The most important part of your Evernote arsenal is the Evernote Webclipper. It’s a browser extension for Chrome, Firefox, Opera, Safari, and becomes part of IE when you install Evernote for Windows. With it, you can capture everything you see online, from an entire page to just one little section or picture. A menu will fly out from the right and provide several options, from changing the notebook (all notes go in a notebook on Evernote) to inserting arrows or highlights or annotations (all the things Skitch used to do for Windows and mobile users). All it takes is a click on the Evernote elephant-head icon

2. Email to Evernote

You probably get a lot of email. It’s still the killer app for sharing information. When you get something worth storing—jokes, documents, code snippets, medical records, travel reservations, pictures from home, etc.—Evernote (now in Plus or Premium only!) provides you a private email address to make that happen with a simple forward of the message. To find your special address, check Account Info in the apps. Give that address out to other people and they can send things to your Evernote account as well. Put the address in your address book on every platform. Use it. Abuse it. (Basic users can email into Evernote a total of five times, then it stops working until an upgrade. Which sucks, but Evernote needs the cash.)

The subject line will become the name of the note. You can make sure it’s filed right by adding @notebook, !date for a reminder, and/or #tag. Here’s an example:

Plans for Today @Receipt !2017/11/05 #household.

You can also add emails to existing notes by using a + at the end of the subject line, adding it to a note with the same title as your subject line.

Sometimes you have multiple notes that just go better together. It’s easy to merge them in the desktop versions of Evernote (Windows, Mac, and Web). Select multiple notes (hold down the Shift key and click) and you’ll see a graphical version of them in a pile. The options will be to email them, save the attachments in them, move them, or, of course, merge them. They’ll all get one title, based on the first note you picked. (If you have notes installed using discontinued Evernote extra apps like Food or Skitch, you can’t access the notes in those apps after a merge.)

3. Create Stacks and Stacks of Notebooks

Evernote storage is a metaphor, with notes inside notebooks. Well, notebooks can also be grouped together, inside “stacks.” For example, you could make a stack called Travel and then put multiple notebooks for different trips inside. You can share notebooks, but can’t share stacks. On the desktop versions you can drag and drop notebooks together to make a stack; right-click or click the pencil icon to name/rename a stack.

4. Add Reminders

Any note filed in Evernote can get a reminder. Click the alarm clock icon over the note in the Web or desktop interface, and you’ll get a drop-down calendar, with options to set a reminder tomorrow, in a week, or any time you’d like to go back and reference it.

5. Make a Task List

There are lots of online and mobile to-do list apps that kick Evernote’s butt, it’s true. But if you’re throwing your lot in with Evernote completely, it can’t hurt to know how to make one. Create a new note and look on the text toolbar above it (or below on the mobile apps) for the Check Box tool. Insert one and you’ll be on your way to creating a task list.

This isn’t so much about better use of Evernote as it is just a good idea: Turn on the Two-Step Verification feature. You’ll find it in the Account Settings. Enable it and a warning pops up—just continue, it’s worth it for the peace of mind that comes from the extra step. When enabled, you’ll require either a phone capable of receiving texts, or a smartphone running an authenticator app like Authy or Google Authenticator. Either method can provide the code you must enter in addition to your password. For more on this kind of security, read Two-Factor Authentication: Who Has It and How to Set It Up.

6. Track Expenses via Smartphone

We live in a credit card world. That means getting receipts. Lots and lots of them, for every purchase. Some people like to keep them—it’s handy to double check receipts against your statement or online account activity to prevent fraud. But that means a wallet or purse filled with stray papers. Instead, take a quick snapshot of your receipts with Evernote on your smartphone. Slap them all into a notebook called “Receipts,” take the extra time to tag them by retailer if you like, and then you’ve got a storehouse of your purchasing history. What’s more, you can search them because Evernote turns words inside pictures into searchable text. Note, this also works great for take-out menus, store hours listings, posters, magazine articles you can’t finish reading at the doctor’s office, you name it.

There are many third-party apps like CamScanner (free for iOS and Android) that make the process of inputting the images even easier. In fact, Evernote makes one for iOS only, called Scannable—another Evernote product that got our Editors’ Choice award.

7. Create Notes With Apps

Evernote’s own apps on smartphones make it relatively easy to create new notes—actual text you write to yourself! Plus they can add pictures and audio pretty simply. But there are specialty third-party apps just for notes—like Drafts ($3.99 )—that take writing on your phone to a new level, and integrate directly with Evernote.

8. Auto Detect Post-it Notes

The camera mode in the Evernote app on iOS, Android, and Windows Phone does something special: Put a brightly colored Post-it Note on a contrasting background, hold the camera phone up to the note, and it’ll auto-scan into Evernote. You can assign a Post-it color to a notebook, to automatically file them—you don’t need to enter a notebook name. So for example, all yellow Post-Its could shunt directly into a “reminders” notebook. It works with yellow, neon pink, electric blue, and limeade colors. (Evernote used to sell Post-its itself, but killed its online marketplace. However the feature is still available in the apps—go to Settings > Camera > Post-it Notes.)

9. IFTTT: Save Notes from Everywhere

Evernote has become such a big part of people’s online storage needs that it’s integrated with just about every service out there. If you don’t believe that, visit the Evernote App Center for a listing of featured Web apps, iOS apps, and Android apps that can send info to Evernote.

No app is more powerful in this regard than If This, Then That (IFTTT). Because it ties in with so many other services, you can use it to create recipe after recipe. Among the most popular things you can send to Evernote instantly: tweets, starred Gmail messages, favorited items in Pocket or on Twitter, Instagram photos, Feedly articles, reminders made with Siri, any RSS feed, and Foursquare check-ins. You can even create a diary of Facebook messages. The list is practically infinite, limited only by your creative coupling of services and their triggers. Dump everything in Evernote and search/sort it later.

10. Scanner Time: Go Truly Paperless

Scanners are Evernote’s best friend. Because, as with pictures or handwritten notes, every word in a scanned document is searchable within Evernote. You can go paperless in just hours (or days, you packrat). Evernote sells a Wi-Fi-enabled scanner made by Fujitsu , the ScanSnap, for $495; pricey, but it scans everything directly into your digital depot of docs. Other small sheet-fed scanners with software that supports Evernote direct uploads include Doxie.

If you’re really brave with your paperwork, send it all to Shoeboxed.com via snail mail. They’ll scan them and put them in your Evernote account. After a free trial, the basic service is $9.95 a month for 50 docs per month, up to $49.95 a month for 500 docs per month. You can get five docs scanned per month for free.

11. Integrate with Webmail

Powerbot is a $1.99-a-month service coupled with a browser extension (for Chrome, Firefox, and Safari) that turns your Web-based email account on Gmail, Yahoo, Outlook, even Google Calendar, into an Evernote feeding powerhouse. Rather than just forwarding a message, you can click a button in your mail to send a message, an attachment, even an entire thread of emails to Evernote (or to Dropbox or OneNote). Better yet, Powerbot also can access Evernote so you can attach an existing note to an outgoing message.

12. Blog by Notebook

You can publicly share an Evernote notebook as a blog. To do it, you sign up (via your Evernote credentials) at Postach.io. It’s a breeze to create, and Postach.io supports RSS feeds, tags for Facebook and Twitter simultaneous posts, domain names (you have to buy one elsewhere), Disqus comments, Google Analytics, and more. Postach.io can’t delete notes or notebooks or get to your account info. You designate exactly what notebook it should pull from, and any note inside—from images to text to audio to documents—will become visible on the blog once it’s tagged as “published.” It costs $9 a month or $90 a year.

13. Academic Success Via Evernote

Evernote’s a must for any student—especially those prone to losing things. Scan in every handout and syllabus. Take pictures of the notes on the whiteboard and record audio of lectures right in the Evernote app. Forward emails from classmates and the teacher/professor to a notebook named after the class. Type class notes right into the Evernote app directly. Use an Evernote Moleskine notebook for hand-written notes to scan later. Set up a shared notebook with friends in class to ensure no one misses out on notes or research materials. And of course, every bit of research on a project or paper should go in for searching. Take advantage of mobile apps like RefME that scan barcodes of books and then formats info about them to cite in paper

14. Sharing is Caring

We’ve mentioned this a couple of times: you can share a notebook in Evernote with other Evernote users—or the world (this requires having a paid account). It’s as simple as right-clicking the folder on the Windows, Mac, or Web desktop interfaces and selecting “Share this notebook.” You’ll get two choices: “Share with individuals” (those who already use Evernote; you’ll need their email addresses) and “Create a Public Link.” The latter provides a URL you can put out there via email, social media, blog post, etc. This isn’t like social network sharing, where you send a note out—this is more like making a publicly accessible open door from the Web to a notebook. So be sure you mean it. If you do create a link and later regret it, you can modify the sharing permissions.

15. Map the Mind of Evernote

If you’re the type of visual thinker who likes to see representations of files flying about in pseudo-3D—a mindmap—well, Evernote’s probably not for you. Luckily, there are options. Mohiomap can link to Evernote and Dropbox and give you a way to node-navigate that you wouldn’t normally—and it is a great way to find long-lost notes that could inspire you. You can even drag and drop tags, creating linkage you may not have seen before in the data.

16. Encrypt Sensitive Desktop Note Text

On the desktop versions of Evernote, it’s entirely possible to set up encryption for individual notes, or indeed individual text in a note. It’s good for keeping out prying eyes, but not foolproof, nor really all that strong. It only works on text, not images. It used to only works from the desktop version of Evernote; now you can encrypt there and will get asked for the password if you try to access it on a mobile device or the Web. .

17. Make a Local Notebook

Not a notebook about stuff in your location (though that is certainly a fun option for storing menus, brochures, sites, and more about places in your town). I mean a local notebook that only exists in one instance of your Evernote account—like on your Windows computer. A local notebook stays in that one spot and isn’t synced by Evernote with all your other installations of Evernote (phones, tablets, Web). In the Windows version, you make one by going to File > New Notebook > New Local Notebook. Note that this folder can’t ever be turned into a synchronized notebook.

18. Watch a Folder

You might enjoy a lot of ways to get documents or images or whatever into Evernote, but nothing beats desktop drag and drop. Windows users can create a “watch folder” that the Evernote software monitors, and then sucks the contents into your account. In Windows, create a folder anywhere, then in the program, go to Tools > Import Folder, and find the folder in question. Any file placed in that folder in the future gets put into your account. Sub-folders can be one level deep and still pulled in. (Mac users can try this workaround to get the same function.)

19. Clip From iPhone to Evernote

Like the Webclipper tool in your desktop browser, you can clip from the Web on your iPhone. First make sure the Evernote app is installed and you’re signed in. Then in a browser like Safari or Chrome, hit the share button—it looks like a box with an arrow shooting out the top. On the first line of apps, you’ll see places to share, like Messages and Mail. Swipe left and click “More.” In the Activities list, turn on Evernote, then click Done. Evernote should now appear on that share menu. Click it and up pops the box where you set the notebook and change the title of the note if desired. It’s not limited to Web pages. Use it with documents and photos, too.

20. Use iOS Evernote in Notifications

The Notification Center screen on an iPhone has become very powerful. You don’t even have to fully unlock the phone, just swipe down and click the “Today” button to see some apps—and access tools like Evernote. To set it up, go to that screen, scroll to bottom, and select Edit. Click the green + next to Evernote to make it a permanent part of the notfications screen.

After that, you’ll see Evernote on the screen (use Edit again to place it higher or lower than other notification apps). It gives you instant access to note-creation tools, be it in text, taking a picture, creating a reminder or list, or chatting with someone. Naturally, they’re just quick jumps to the already powerful Evernote app on the phone.

21. Secure Mobile Notes in iOS

Anyone who picks up your iPhone can typically access your Evernote account. You can limit that, of course, by locking your phone with a passcode or using Touch ID fingerprint recognition on the newer iPhones. You can go the extra mile within the Evernote iOS app itself, even with a basic (free) account. In the app’s settings (click the wrench icon at the top of the app screen), go to Settings > General > Passcode Lock. You see an option to set up another passcode here that is only for Evernote; and you have the option to again use Touch ID to unlock Evernote. (Note that this doesn’t do anything to protect your notes from prying eyes on other synced platforms.)

22. Say It, Don’t Type It

It’s hard to tell on the desktop versions of Evernote, but you can create audio notes—create a new one and there’s a little microphone icon at the top that works with your system’s mic. (It’s not an option on the Web app). Naturally, audio is a lot friendlier on the mobile side. Take iOS, for example. When you click the Text button in the Evernote app to create a new note, you get two microphone icons. The icon on the keyboard is built into iOS—it’s for voice-to-text dictation. And the transcription in iOS works remarkably well. The other, above the keyboard, is for direct audio recordings. The sound of your voice is stored in .m4a format on Evernote. Play them back on any version of the program, download them, or share them with others. You can even move it into your pre-created local folder so it becomes available only on the desktop, if desired.

23. Make Table of Contents Note

If you want a quick way to access a bunch of notes without search or browsing, create a table of contents (ToC) with quick links to each. This only works in Evernote for Mac and Windows.

Click each note you want to include—hold down the Command key on Mac, or Ctrl key on Windows as you click each note. Then click the Create Table of Contents Note button. The note will appear in the same notebook as all the notes you picked, or Evernote just picks a notebook if you selected notes from multiples. If you want the ToC to appear in multiple notebooks, right-click and select Copy to Notebook.

Want to just link a couple of notes together? Right-click a note, select Copy Note Link, and just go to a different note and paste it in.

24. Learn the Search Syntax

Searching through Evernote is the next best thing to storing things there—after all, you store it to find later. Just throwing terms in a search box isn’t the right way to go about it. Learn the syntax that makes searches powerful. They’re spelled out on Evernote’s advanced search syntax help page.

For example, use “tag:” (without quotes) followed by a term just to search tags. The “created:” or “updated:” operator, followed by a date in the form YYYYYMMDD can find specific dates; follow it with something like “day-2” and it’ll find everything from the last two days. If you’re looking for your task lists, the “todo:” operator only looks for notes with check boxes. Look just in the title of a note with “intitle:” and in a specific notebook with “notebook:”. The “source:” operator followed by “web.clip” or “mobile” limit searches to those sources. Learn them all. The video above will help.

25. Master the Shortcuts

Like any good desktop program, Evernote for Mac and Windows each have a lot of keyboard shortcuts that make life easier. Here’s a short list for Windows; note that when it says Ctrl, the equivalent on the Mac is the Command key.

Ctrl + N = New note Ctrl + Shift + N = New notebook Ctrl + Shift+ T = New tag Ctrl + K = Add a hyperlink Ctrl + Q = Quit Evernote

26. Use Evernote Like PowerPoint

Evernote believes all your notes can work as slides. That’s what Presentation Mode is for—making presentations where your notes are the content of the talk. It’s part of the Windows, Mac, iPad, and iPhone versions of Evernote—if you’ve got the Premium version. Here’s a full tutorial, with the video preview above.

27. File Your Statements Automatically With FileThis

Another add-on service that will toss docs into Evernote for you so you don’t have to scan them, FileThis links with major providers and banks so you can get statements and receipts that auto-file. Link it with up to six services for free, or pay $20 or $50 a year to get a lot more, depending on your needs. Later, when you need to find that one credit card statement with that one charge on it, it’s just an Evernote search away.

28. Search and Transfer Notes/Files with Otixo

If you use a lot of online storage services beyond Evernote, like Dropbox and Google Drive and OneDrive, you should consider using Otixo cloud manager to search them. You’ll have to pay to join it up with multiple services, but when you do you get one search for all your online notes and documents—and the ability to drag and drop them between services.

29. Save Syntax Searches

If you’re frequently doing the same kind of searches in Evernote, save them. Do a search, with all the syntax criteria you can think of, then after it’s done, in the Windows version, hover over the search box and click Save Search. You can give it a special name so you never forget it. You access it again in the same search box.

30. Pair Better with Google Drive (Soon)

Evernote claims at least half its users also have a Google Drive account, so it’s made it a little easier to access all Google Drive files while using Evernote, like making them embeddable links in a note. Go into your Evernote setting to Connected Services, and connect your Google account to the service; the integration itself is still in beta testing on Android and on the desktop with the Chrome browser only (though as of this writing it seems like you can’t get into the desktop beta test, so look for it down the road).

31. Integrate Evernote with Microsoft

Microsoft’s Outlook.com is PCMag’s favorite Web-based email service. And it’s got complete support for Evernote, not just Microsoft’s own OneNote. It does more than work with email however—it also integrates with Outlook.com’s calendar functions. Set a reminder on a note in Evernote, and now the reminder will pop up in Outlook’s calendar. Of course, it also makes it a one-click thing to store important emails in Evernote as well as share notes stored there.

32. Transfer it All…to OneNote

Much as Microsoft plays nice with Evernote, it still favors its own OneNote. And in the war between the note-taking apps, Microsoft has a new weapon: OneNote Importer will suck everything in your Evernote account into OneNote so you lose nothing if you decide to switch over. (Or, maybe, just use it as a backup of your Evernote account. Just saying.)

Of course, there are better ways to make the “backup” between the two services a constant thing: use IFTTT or Zapier to connect separate services. It works best for Evernote-to-OneNote transfers, not so much the other direction. However, Evernote’s Greg Chiemingo notes that there are a lot of file types Evernote supports that don’t transfer, such as ink notes, note links, and any item you have encrypted.
