Round 1 of preliminaries, group 5
Tumblr media
The first two places get a place on the bracket
Little reminder: there will be 2 more rounds of preliminaries, the losing blorbos of this poll still have 2 chances of getting in the official bracket
Propaganda under the cut
Melissa Chase (Milo Murphy’s Law)
"Her self worth is entirely based on her grade point average and getting straight As. She can’t remember anything, ever (specific examples include forgetting her maths book regularly, her student pass for the subway, and how many days are in February). However, she CAN remember the blood type of every president. She is terrible at throwing She gets visually upset when she realises that a plan was changed last minute, and that an academic event she expected to do well in was combined with a sporting event, giving no time to prepare for the new event She freaks OUT when she thinks she’s going to disappoint her headteacher- she doesn’t seem to expect to be given any actual punishment, just that the headteacher will be disappointed and think that she’s irresponsible She has a whole conspiracy room in her house dedicated to researching her best friend’s medical condition- Murphy’s Law being an interest that she is clearly very passionate about and interested in. she does all of that and still can’t remember her maths book. relatable queen her ambition in life is to be a “journalist, and queen of the universe” "
Candace Flynn (Phineas and Ferb)
"A ball of stress and anxiety. She's always angry because nobody listens to her, cares about her feelings, or believes her about anything, which tbh is like the quintessential teenage girl experience. Secretly just wants her parents to recognise and appreciate her."
V-Flower (Vocaloid)
"they believe that people only care about them when they are in pain"
Ciaphas Cain (Warhammer 40k)
"Don't let the sharp jawline and the mutton-chops fool you: Ciaphas Cain has no idea what he's fucking doing and would very much like to not be here right now. He is a high-ranking Commissar, essentially a walking morale boost for Imperial Guard soldiers and one of the only symbols of hope in the grimdark Warhammer 40k universe. He also has no idea how he got the job or how to get the hell out. Commissar Cain spends all his time accidentally doing magnificent bastard things while trying to run away from danger and dying inside. Over the course of his books, he's named Hero of the Imperium, has a hot mommy inquisitor fall in love with him, and saves hundreds of planets per panic attack he has. His cowardice and impostor syndrome are second only to my own, and that's why he's just like me fr."
Percy Jackson (Percy Jackson series)
"he's got big no thoughts head empty energy! he loves his friends and girlfriends SO much (more most YA characters, i think; he would have no qualms about sacrificing the world to save the people he loves, which goes against the typical hero). he is almost always ready to fight a bitch. he has adhd and accidentally says things he shouldnt all the time (but this has made him good at problem-solving, bc he creates a LOT of problems for himself)"
MK (Lego Monkie Kid)
"Oooooh boy where do I begin. MK the Monkie Kid is the protagonist of the story but he has *so many issues*. He wants to be a good person but has a whole lot of impostor syndrome and is convinced he will only hurt people the more he tries to save them. He is convinced that every major villain in the show is his fault, even as far as misremembering/changing up some events to put blame onto himself He also has an absent mentor figure that was supposed to help him but guess what he had to figure out all his powers on his own so abandonment issues go brrrr. He has so much anger toward his mentor Wukong but he just *bottles it all up* (common theme) Also he is so trans and adhd coded. First, MK is a nickname. We don’t know his real name, but it is v much implied he used to go by something else. He and his friends also puts a lot of emphasis on manly stuff like ‘I’m a big boy!’/‘he’s a Monkie *Man*!!!’/‘im the smartie boy, the plan man!’ He also has trouble focusing and listening to other people, is sometimes blunt and he is VERY interested in Sun Wukong and the journey to the west (Chinese classical novel that the show is based on) and just in general always needs constant reassurance and support from his friends. He is often compartmentalizing his feelings and internalizes a lot of fear and blame is also suppressing a part of himself that scares him. (Which, same) He loves his friends so much and tries so hard to keep them all safe, even hiding his own problems and worries from them as an attempt to protect them. He wants to go back to season 1, back when each episode was a villain-of-the-week kinda story, with no world-destroying threats. But nope, he saw the horrors, and he can never go back to the bubbly Monkie Kid from the beginning. Also he is terrified of spiders :>"

Everytime people discuss who should be in the leadership group and start writing fanfiction about how Mitch doesn't deserve anything and doesn't do anything for the leafs, actually, I just think about this article and wonder how we got here. I think he could be captain- I actually think he could be a great one. But I guess we'll never know https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/2469915/2021/03/25/mitch-marner-ohl-season/
reading that just made me so fucking emotional. i honestly think it would translate into great captaincy in the nhl too... he just happens to be on a team with auston matthews, so i get WHY it's like this (still.. if there was ever a modern case for co-captains but. too late now ig) but. i hate to say it's not the right market bc it's not his fault that this market is so fucking volatile and stupid so often, lmfao. like. he says things the same as anyone and i'll firmly defend that to death. i hate when people say even lovingly 'no he shouldnt do that' or 'i wish hed stop talking to them' like no, fuck you, lol. it's the temperament in toronto that's the fucking issue and more people should be seriosuly talking abt it and calling it out in the main journalists so they can be shamed and maybe learn responsibility. it's stripping so many of our players and staff from ever letting an ounce of personality or anything personal show whatsoever. it makes it so much less fun and WAY less marketable. it's just obnoxious to me, but mitch marner is someone who has SO MUCH leadership presence too.... like in 22-23 when HE was this team's mvp and the team was coming together to try to make stuff happen for him???? it echoes auston's chase for 70 so much. there's that other great article from a couple yrs ago abt mitch and auston and their personality differences but how both are leading the team and it's just so true. they're natural born leaders but even more than that, their work ethic and accountability to themselves is insane, you can just see it. i'm so sad we live with this era of social media as leaf fans sometimes bc it's genuinely so hostile and obnoxious to try to participate in, lol. mitch can be loud and knows how to point out when stuffs wrong and wants to work to fix it and hold ppl accountable. but on the same hand, he also wants everyone to feel like THEY can talk if they need to and that they're welcome there and valued as people and that's just like. a beautiful personality trait to have. that locker room would not be half of what it is without him, idec, lmao.

hello vivi !! it’s ME again !!
im here to yap again so BE READY !!
first i love tomerus i want them to smooch but i also want them to have a billford dynamic…please here me out with tired stressed severus being tormented by an entity (tom ahah TOMENTED) who wants to take over the universe and finds fun in torturing humans with a whole ‘let’s see how many times i can rearrange your atoms without you ceasing to exist!!’ but in a TOM way yk ?! like severus who shouldnt like this weird demon but he’s also kind of hot in a way he hates himself for. like please my man wanted to research creatures and potions and instead accidentally made a deal with a god damn trillion year old psychotic masochistic interdimensional demon ????
THE SECOND YAP is i want them…sherlock johnlock coded…severus just looking for an apartment and meeting up with an old friend (insert whoever you want here) and who says ‘wow, you’re the second person to ask me that.’ and he’s like ‘wtf r u talking abt’ and there tom is whipping a dead body because he wants to know if bodies bruise after death ?? and everyone’s okay with it except for severus who’s stood there wondering who tf this guy is and why is behaviour is normalised ?? or you could make it sheriaty which i now realise while writing this is slightly better. moriarty as tom and severus as sherlock with their homoerotic rivalry where neither of them actually want to kill the other because what’s the fun in that ?? this is what severus needs, the thrill of the chase and the only person that can give him that is tom and while toms reading out this pre-rehearsed villainous speech severus is thinking ‘this guy talks to much…i should kiss him. or shoot him. both is good.’ and tom is thinking ‘maybe i should kill him…no then i wont be able to see him. maybe i could just rob his grave after. i’ll see what he does first.’ because honestly they’re ALL THE OTHER HAS !! they’re ALL THE OTHER WANTS !! no matter how much tom does, severus will always be there to stop him and the thrill of the chase is what gets them off !! they’re insane !!
and i love them and then concludes my yap LOVE YOU VIVI !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hello Dori lovely how are you 🧡
I confess it's been a long time since I watched both of them so I don't know if I could make them as you said but I did understand the dynamic you're referring to which thank you love, it's perfect especially the first one.
Maybe not a deity (or maybe could do) Tom has psychopath tendency which if we make Severus some type of a creature Tom would want to play and test everything about Severus like a kid playing with his toys. But if we think him as a 'deity' I think we could go with Canon. Like V winning the war and playing with Severus, torturing him and making him live forever so he could play with him forever etc etc.
I kinda have Moriarty and Holmes thing au. Not really same but similar chasing and playing game. Muggle au where Tom is a criminal Lord or something and Severus journalist or detective who looks for him. More likely journalists tho. Tom would have fun how his newly graduated 'stalker' finds things about him(he lets him) and Severus would be excited to discover more and more things about Tom. And at some point Severus gets good, he finds things Tom doesn't want him and rather than being angry Tom would kinda feel proud lol anyway I hope I tidy the plot soon so I can start making the au because it's fun.
I love you too 😙🧡🧡

comparing ig followers is a lil crazy to me, Ronaldo is the most followed footballers but Messi is wayyy more loved lol (just look how he was received in el salvador, how irl fans treat him like a divinity and even brazilians think he is the goat even if they have this crazy rivalry with Argentina, pr7 could never)
Gavi is called the heart of the club because he deserves it. He is who puts effort the most and you cant ignore his impact not only the players but the club itself. The way he plays; giving all his 100% on the pitch, him being a key player for the team since he was the one connecting the midfield and the defense, him always standing up for his teammates and defending the badge, him being the moral and emotional support of the team.....
Him being called the heart of the club has its reasons and i only said the ones i could remember (literally even his teammates and staff miss him, that is not normal for a 19yo to be this relied). See, being from la masia doesnt assure you this popularity, i really cant recall any of our current youngsters that can move masses with having only 1 social media and barely be active on it. He built this himself because he is just naturally likeable and stands out from the rest.
Something that you forget anon, is that all this popularity is also because he got a big demographic of people hating on him every time of the day; the media and press setting him up and lying about him (remember when tchoumeni had to call out the media who spread that lie of gavi injuring him on el clásico?), he got a NT teammate lying in his fucking face and literally saying he was the cancer of the dressingroom and alongside his journalist friend adding up to the "he is toxic and doesnt want to show up to meetings" bullshit, the spanish madridistas calling him names and disrespecting him when he was holding the mic after winning the Nations League (they hate him since supercup, they are pretry much the responsibles for making everyone hate on him), literally every casual thinks that Gavi is a thug that has 0 football abilities and he is a bad person because he gets lots of yellow cards, heck even you got "culers" calling his ACL a blessing because the team had decent games against porto and atleti (spoiler, they regretted his injury after the el clásico disasterclass). People opened their fucking eyes and realized how importsnt gavi was AFTER an ACL + meniscus and a el clásico disasterclass. Dont you see how fucking deranged people can be to him and how fucked his PR is? Do you see what im trying to say? Obviously Pedri doesnt deserve to receive any type of hate and much less because of something he cant control like injuries, but lets not pretend that Gavi doesnt receive much worse feedback when he does his job (and he does it perfectly, but they are just braindead to have footy knowledge). Seems that Gavi receiving so much love even after constantly eating shit from the media and haters triggers you or something, its not the first time i see these type of comments. Boy is 19yo and suffered one of the worst injuries a footballer can have due the incompetitiveness of his coach, it shouldnt be surpring why people miss him and why does he get love and even more when his teammates are absolutely nothing without him
Preach!!! It's always been weird to me how people see him get as much hate and harassment for no reason and still begrudge him for the support he gets like what do you want from him? To just be hated and get no love in return? No teenager has ever been treated as poorly as he was last year like it was hell. He was insulted to HIS FACE while celebrating his first international trophy like it doesn't get worse than that and all because he loves the club as much as he does and you're mad people show him love to support him that's just insane to me and feels evil spirited. He deserves all the support in the world actually just to balance out the amount of hate he gets. And it's not like people love him for no reason, he literally earned it twice over.

Asks you about your journalist oc asks you about your journalist oc asks you abo- /pos
YES!! YES!!!! So Bombus 'Buddy' is the journalist, they're chill in a contained anxiety way. and Autism way. They're a grumpus of very little words yet somehow everyone tends to let words spill out around them. Theyre just a comforting person to be around, they're always listening and while they'll have snarky remarks if you start it, its usually something that'll make you reflect on yourself and not close up. Bombus was planning their whole early life to be a veterinarian but something happened that made them spiral into journalism and taking a major career change. This helps when they go to snaktooth island. For their 'current' job they do mostly cryptozoology because its fun and people like it. Bombus likes conspiracies because they're fun to think about not because Bombus believes them- even if they've uncovered a few themselves. Bombus has like another pen name for more serious things they do stories on so they don't get their head blown off. Not that it would, but they're very paranoid about disappearing in the middle of the night. On the island of Snaktooth, Bombus is a little obsessive with documenting absolutely everything (mirroring my 100% playthrough lol). They have multiple journals and they regularly talk to Floofty and Triffany for the more science-y stuff. That's their professional journal though. The journal Beffica gave them is the original they lug around with them everyone and write field notes in along with the issues everyone else has. Because its habit at this point to write down everyone else's issues. Beffica is also a close friend of theirs honestly because Bombus loves loves to gossip and know things. Bombus just considers themselves friends with everyone on the island!! Maybe less so Cromdo but hes fun to get into arguments with about haggling and non existent money. Think around a week into their adventures on Bugsnax island they find a unique sort of Bugsnax based off the food Mousse. They don’t have any fun bugsnax name because theyre literally a mouse!! Which is what Bombus calls her, mostly because they didnt know how to pronounce ‘mousse’ before. Theyre a weird sort of bugsnax that genuinely struggles and will attack you if you try to eat it, and Bombus tends to talk to it like she can actually talk back. Mousse is always on or around Bombus and everyone else...is a little uncomfortable with it. Even Gramble. Mousse doesnt like gramble. Gramble doesnt like mousse. She fills him with dread. (This is based on how i had another person in the vc with me helping while I played bugsnax) Bigsnax and ending spoilers after this point btw
Bombus has always been a little paranoid, not as bad as Snorpy is but being an investigator as long as Bombus has will give you the kinda gut instinct that makes the rest of your normal life nerve wracking. When Bombus went to Broken tooth island and found that key in that cave it fucked them up. That shouldnt of been there. at all. It doesnt match the rest of the area in the slightest and the triangle scheme reminds them of the stupid grumpinati thing Snorpy talks about. Bombus doubts it was planted there, but when they find the triplicate space and the tapes it basically sets up what they do from there on out. They document every single fucking inch of that place. Taking books and the tapes and taking so many pictures their camera starts heating up. They also quickly capture Joey Quickbeans and adopt them as their own bugsnax pet along with Mousse. Mostly cause they want to return them to Alegander? Or as like...’plz dont kill me im holding ur dog hostage’ When they leave Snaktooth they take a Small Detour from helping everyone not die to save all of their research, which they’ve painstakingly taken the time to put into easy to transport journals and tapes thank fuck, so it only takes quickly putting it on and bolting. Everyones also very mad when they hear Mousse. Because they just learned Bugsnax are parasites and suck. Bombus Also has Joey and Sprout in their bag but the others don’t know about it. I like to think a year or two after snaktooth Bombus talks to gramble and mentions Sprout to see if maybe he’d want them back. (He...thinks on it. He might. Hes conflicted. Also a little mad Bombus brought it but also grateful?) The next step of their story is research the Triplicate, Snakolytes and find Alegander. And get distracted for a bit doing a favour and trying to clear Snorpy and Floofty’s names. Skimming over the romance with Floofty cause while I like it, it may not be everyones cup of tea so ill probably talk about it in other posts :-) I am planning on making a fic for it though!!

anyway i’m still thinkin about roceit newsies au...this got SO LONG its basically a bullet fic of the whole plot at this point but uh enjoy!!! its has all the sides and remy and emile bc i rly wanted to shove them all in here aldkaldka
this is based on the musical mostly bc i have never watched the original movie all the way thru oops
roman is jack and remus is crutchie (thanks boop). remus does crazy stunts even with his crutch and roman is Constantly Worried TM and overprotective of remus even tho remus can DEF take care of himself
on the other hand remus knows roman hates working as a newsboy and just wants to escape to some small town where he can become a local artist of some sort. remus wants roman to go CHASE his DREAMS even tho he’s afraid roman might leave him behind
roman may be the actor but remus is great at coming up with gruesome yet intriguing headlines that get people to buy papers and would totally be a great author of some sort
ON THAT NOTE roman dreams of santa fe and can picture it perfectly but whenever he tries to explain it, it comes out as senseless rambling and longing. it’s remus who can really put into words what roman feels (bc theyre bros and they just GET each other)
virgil as davey, patton as les, logan as sarah (its the musical but they have an extra sibling okay. let me have older brother logan)
virgil and patton show up and virgil is super untrusting and hates that theyre basically lying to get people to buy papers but patton is just EXCITED to meet New People!!! and looks up to roman (and remus), like, instantly
it helps that roman promises to take them to a real actual theater after they sell all their papers owned by the one the only emile picani !!!
also roman is the one who first calls him “virge” which is like jack saying “davey” instead of david. yes this is necessary information
so they sell their papers (and roman briefly meets an ESPECIALLY handsome guy wink wink) and go see emile who performs some variant of That’s Rich like the star he is. u cant take singer emile away from me
roman also performs bc i said so. he spies someone watching him during his act up above the stage and climbs up there when he’s done
janus. its janus, if that wasnt clear or u dont know the plot of the newsies musical aldkaldlal
so yeah janus as katherine!! he may be pulitzer’s son but that doesn’t mean his father wants him to be a journalist. pulitzer thinks he should prepare to inherit the publishing company or be a banker or smth, not be a journalist
i just think janus’ “society is a LIE” vibe fits with katherine. i mean, just look at Watch What Happens. “give life’s little guys some ink,” “they’ll storm the gates,” “rich greedy sourpusses” .... idk it just SCREAMS janus to me
ALSO, katherine technically lies about her identity for like 3/4 of the musical, so
anyway! roman meets janus and janus is all suave and lowkey flirty at first but then roman starts flirting BACK and jan is like “uh oh how to talk to cute boys????”
so then he gets all “i have more important things to do” *hair flip* and goes back to the article he’s supposed to be writing about emile’s theater (a lot of his notes are about roman’s performance but nobody needs to know that shhh)
roman draws a portrait of jan and leaves it there and janus gently & dramatically picks it up, stares at it, and tucks it into his suit with a soft smile
uh oh prices for papers went up! virgil steps up and helps roman lead a strike. turns out his caution works GREAT with roman’s determination and they keep each other from going towards extreme overthinking (virgil) or extreme stupidity (roman). they are a TEAM and they are BESTIES.
remus: lets SET THE PAPERS ON FIRE
roman, starry eyed: HECK YEAH LETS DO IT
virgil: how about we dont do that and instead form a union
and then the twins are like GOOD IDEA and tell everyone else. virgil may be a cautious and untrusting and afraid of public speaking but he has good ideas dangit
the intro to seize the day yknow? virgil says a Good Idea (which can probably be traced back to him always listening to logan rant about his studies) and roman spreads the message in a Firm Rebellion-y way to the other newsies
and patton is there doing his absolute best. he may be small but he knows that this isn’t right or fair to the newsboys and he’s ready to physically fight someone
enter logan who is lowkey really proud of virgil for stepping outside of his comfort zone to do whats right. logan may be scared out of his mind for his little bros but he’s gonna help them as much as he can between college and trying to work side jobs to help their fam
basically logan knows janus and tells him that he should report on the strike bc logan wants to help his bros AND his friend however he can
cue janus seeing his opportunity and TAKING it. he’s gonna write about this strike even if no one else will!!! take THAT, father
he also maybe possibly wanted to see roman again. but roman never needs to know that okay what he doesnt know cant hurt him
seize the day happens!!!! they strike!!!! they r powerful!!! but then no one else from any other sections of new york strike with them and they lowkey get rekt
remus mocks the delanceys but that was a BAD decision cuz now theyre targeting him and he gets taken to the REFUGE
roman is SAD bc his brother’s been taken away, no one showed up to help them strike, his brother’s been taken away and he just wants to get OUT of there. run away to santa fe, his ideal world, but he can’t even articulate that because his brother is gone
how is that just act one. how have i written so much yet left out so much???
remus is at the refuge and he’s a little more scared, now, that roman really will just leave him behind even though he knows deep down that roman would never.
still. he writes roman a letter and maybe he goes into a little too much detail about his injuries and the refuge but hey, that’s remus. he writes about how maybe they can run away to santa fe together. he signs it “your brother” and i CRY because they are the best bros
roman reads it and ALSO cries. especially because there it is, the description of santa fe he can never come up with by himself. remus rly does know him, huh
total scene change: janus finds the other newsies (and logan) in a restaurant? bar? and is like “!!! ur on the FRONT PAGE on my newspaper” which i just decided is called the snake instead of the sun
virgil didn’t totally trust janus would follow thru at first but now he’s convinced. they did it!!!! theyre on the front page!!!! the world WILL know!!!!
cue tapdancing!!!!!! king of new york is an absolute bop. i need logan tapdancing daintily and then janus LAUNCHING into some complex tap routine bc the newsies think he too will dance daintily
i know they wouldnt,,, actually dance but just let me have this self-indulgence in this entirely self-indulgent au
the Bro Trio + janus go hunt down roman to show him the paper and find him painting stuff at emile’s all sad and upset bc, well, they lost and remus was taken
but virgil is trying to show him that they made progress!!! sure pulitzer won but he won the BATTLE and actually the poor guy’s head is spinning bc theyre gonna win.
“cmon, ro, if i’m is telling you to be optimistic there must be hope”
see virgil calls him RO and its cute bc roman gave him the nickname ‘virge’ and now virgil’s giving him the nickname ‘ro’ theyre just besties okay
roman is unconvinced but then logan, who roman has actually never met before, steps in with Facts and Statistics, and patton adds some adorable words of encouragement, and janus sassily waves their Front Page Story at him, and roman starts realizing they DO have a chance
but then uh oh pulitzer threatens remus and the Bro Trio and roman is forced to speak out against the strike or risk ruining the lives of everyone he loves. and also he finds out that janus is pulitzer’s son and is Betrayed TM
theres some “he’s just trying to build up a false confidence in u so u can plummet to even greater depths” parallels in there somewhere....u can’t trust many people as a newsie and when roman DOES trust someone turns out he’s the son of the guy ur trying to fight
so roman says overnight in pulitzer’s basement, sleeping on an uncomfortable old printing press, and makes his decision
now for the RALLY
remy is spot conlon bc he DESERVES to be the leader of the brooklyn newsies. brooklyn, flushing, richmond, etc all show up to a newsies rally and are like YEAH!!! STRIKE!!!!
virgil is trying to tame the crowd nervously and keeps waiting for roman to show up bc they work best when theyre working together!!!! finally roman’s there and virgil introduces him (the attention isnt solely on him now thank gosh)
but then roman starts talking about how they dont stand a chance and how they shouldnt go on strike and virgil is just. confused and upset and angry
especially when he sees one of pulitzer’s employees slipping roman wads of money
virgil corners roman afterwards and is absolutely RIPPING into him. roman could fix this if he would just tell virgil the truth, tell him he doesn’t care about the money, he just wanted to keep him and patton and logan safe—
but roman knows if he tells virgil, then virgil will turn all his anger towards pulitzer, will be able to convince roman to keep going, and roman won’t. he can’t put virgil, put his family, at risk.
so he lies.
he doesn’t mean any of it. but he says it.
and maybe he kind of understands why janus lied, too.
he says he’s never had anyone to take care of him or remus, not like virgil does with his parents and his older brother. he says virgil will never know what it’s like.
virgil scoffs and glares and beneath all his fury looks crushed. but there’s still fire in his eyes, a spark roman saw that first day that only grew and engulfed any doubts virgil ever had.
roman says he’ll take the money and go, leave new york behind.
virgil says fine. we don’t need you. because you know what? all those words you said were mine. i didn’t have the courage to say them back then but now i do. we don’t need you.
(because i watched that scene in the movie and like YES go OFF davey i mean virgil)
roman flees to his “bedroom” which is really just a fire escape and just longs for remus’ reassurance. he has the letter but it doesn’t seem as encouraging now, not when he’s lost everything else important to him.
then janus shows up and roman’s mad at him but not mad enough to kick him out. and janus watched roman just give up on everything they’ve been fighting for and just wants to know WHY. why did he turn his back on the newsies when they were so close?
and roman, tired and upset and defeated, just says they wouldn’t succeed. even if all the newsies went on strike no one would report on it, anyway, because pultizer has all the printing presses on lockdown, even the one janus published from. and they already lost once! what more could they possibly do?
roman looks out over the railing, chest heaving from his rant, longing for his imaginary santa fe where he doesn’t have to face his failures. janus stands next to him and puts his hand over roman’s.
“i don’t have a simple answer to that question....but here’s a start.”
and janus pulls out a paper with roman’s words (well, and virgil’s, because virgil said it first but roman rephrased it powerfully, and that’s why they worked as a team) typed out, words that make the strike not about newsies but about ALL working children in the city who are being exploited for their youth and naivety.
it’s an entire article, expertly written. if published it would get the word out to the other newsies that they haven’t given up and show other working children and adults alike that this is IMPORTANT and they aren’t going away.
and then roman remembers his drawings of the refuge and remus’ graphic descriptions and shows them to janus and hey!!! they have a plan!!! they just need to print it....
roman’s like yo there’s an old press in ur dad’s basement he’d never suspect anything
and theyre both so excited and theyre gonna DO this, FINALLY, and janus sees hope on roman’s face again, maybe permanently this time, and janus just leans in and kisses him.
its very sweet and cute and theyre in LOVE
they pull back and kinda stand there awkwardly for a few seconds before both of them start grinning
and they both know its fragile, that they’ve hurt each other and trust was cracked, but it wasn’t broken completely, and they can fix this. they believe in each other and that’s enough for now.
and then they go find virgil at his house
roman knocks on the door and virgil opens it and just. glares at roman. and roman starts rambling apologies and explanations and tries to tell virgil about their plan and did he mention he’s sorry
virgil kinda just stares at him as he goes on and on and the only thing that stops him is patton running out and launching himself at roman
then logan appears behind virgil, and virgil kinda just smiles
“glad to have u back. again.”
and then they go sneak into pulitzer’s basement and print the article with jan’s writing and ro’s drawings and remus’ descriptions and the other newsies go spread the papers ALL around the city
the next morning EVERYONE is out on strike!!! u cant get ANYWHERE without seeing ppl, newsies or otherwise, filling the streets with chants of “seize the day”
roman, with the Bro Trio and Janus trailing close behind, waltzs on in to pulitzer’s office and flings the money pulitzer gave him back on the desk and is like whatcha gonna do NOW, joe??
pulitzer angrily tells them he’s a fool for going back on their deal and logan steps in sayin pulitzer is a fool for letting this get so out of hand over a 10 cent price increase. his sales are down 70%!! objectively the price increase was like the worst business decision ever
virgil’s like plus it’s making u look bad that ur business is the reason most of these kids are suffering. people really love kids, mr pulitzer and patton smiles brightly but in like a menacing way
then emile walks in with a ~dazzling smile~ and is like ur son told me about this whole situation, it’d be a shame if i contacted my good friend governor roosevelt who won’t be as kind as these brave newsies since u tried so hard to stop him from being elected :)
((in the show roosevelt is actually there but i want emile to have a moment to SHINE))
so pulitzer’s like FINE and talks to roman alone and roman wears him down, throwing words from janus, virgil, and pulitzer himself right in pulitzer’s face until FINALLY they have a deal. he’ll lower the prices by half AND pulitzer will buy back whatever they don’t sell full price
roman bursts out of the office into the streets where all the newsies are waiting and is like WE WONNN
and since they published all that stuff about the refuge in the paper, the guy who runs it is being arrested and REMUS IS FREE
the twins hug for like a full two minutes
then pulitzer offers roman a job as a political cartoonist and roman’s like. well idk now that this is over i should probably...head out
bc lowkey he’s thinking virgil still doesn’t wanna see roman ever again and he did say he would leave, so
but then virgil’s like come on, ro, you don’t really think we want u to leave, do u? what’s santa fe got that new york aint? tarantulas? sandstorms? stampedes? you can’t go to santa fe what if you DIE—
and logan says new york’s got us!
patton: and we’re family, right?
then janus is like you got a union to lead! and...you got me.
and remus is like bro, anyone can dream, all you do is close ur eyes! but some made up world is all you’ll ever see. (bc he’s the wordsy one, u see. he helps roman have the poetic realization that his santa fe isn’t real, but this IS)
so roman says well if u guys INSIST.....and then he takes jan’s hand and kinda asks w his eyes and then kisses jan in front of all the newsies who proceed to cheer obnoxiously
when they break apart roman leads janus by the hand over to the paper-buying-cart and slaps some couns down on the table and BUYS SOME PAPERS BC THEYRE NEWSIES BABEY
and everyone lived happily ever after🥰

welcome
growing up, i was constantly stuffing my nose into any book that would let my already imaginative mind wander into some of the most extraordinary literature pieces. as i got older, i found myself in an extremely tormenting mental state.. i shut myself off from the world, my friends, and anything that meant something to me. this self inflicted isolation was caused by parental disapproval, but allowed me to mature on my own, create a sense of inner strength for myself, and to form strong bonds with those that stuck with me the whole way. during this isolated time of my life, i began to write about other people in the world who felt different, much like i did, simply because they didnt look ‘normal’, did things out of the norm, and defied the way our society believes things should be done. i wrote about these people as if they were on an appreciative pedestal rather than trying to diminish their spirit much like the rest of the world would. since then, i joined my high school newspaper and found a love in journalistic writing.. i have wanted to work for, and to hopefully own my own magazine one day for quite some time. i used to believe that i would have to go to school in order to gain more knowledge in journalism which would help me land a job in the field i long to join one day. im now a high school graduate and was accepted into eugene lang college of liberal arts at the new school where i would be majoring in journalism and design. despite being my top choice school since i was a sophomore and spending months on perfecting my application, i wont be attending due to high costs. i was devastated but have now realized that spending a fuck ton of money to attend that school shouldnt have been my only choice for as long as it was, especially because i already feel as if i have what it takes to make something that will be appreciated by many. ive always known that i have a naturally strong intellect and that i will mean something one day after enduring years of feeling as if my existence meant nothing. and thats where this blog comes in.. i created slimey mag to create something sooner than i ever expected.. on this blog, i will write about musicians, artists, filmmakers, and practically any being living their lives without worrying about if their actions will be perceived as ‘normal’. because this is the start, any editorials or features will be seldom but most likely about people that i know personally. this is only the beginning, i dont have many resources other than a love for writing, a camera, and many emotions that fuel my drive to create. i dont hold back and never plan on doing so, enjoy.

I have no clue.
Wow some people can really be entitled to what they think is theirs. Thats not really important honestly, if anything im to lazy to describe the video im watching to express how i feel about this asshole im watching in a deadwing dork video. The internet (wiki how specificly) guided me to this thing called “conscious writing”. This means writing whatever comes to my head to help practice writing, not really worrying about errors. and im kinda letting some go but then some errors i just cant let slide by. For anyone who reads this i am trying to practice in becoming a media journalist. so if any future news seekers see this on my blog, hello from the past! by whatever point you are seeing this i hope to have brought some type of news to someone that means something. My name is JOnathan vaughn, i am 20 years old and have a passion for information. More so information that is factual, citing my information and so on. The greatest issue i have currently run into was my communication and networking, and what to report honestly. pretty pathetic but what can you do. Maybe religion but their is a million people who have already reported the information i want to get across. World events will always be a easy of of course but the demographic i woould be reaching out to using this website will not care about how before iran attacked the us embassy ironicly after we placed 150,000 troops over their boarders. I would use reddit but wow is reddit just a shit show of smug assholes who think somehow they are smart because they use the site. Anyways i have always been a fan of writing and journalism as a whole, international work is something ive always wanted to do, this started when i seen the documentary on north korea from vice. the very idea this English speaking, american looking fat bastard went into the most dangerous state in the world by bribing some airport officials shows how much the world does not care, and how anything is possible with money and some clout. It blew my mind as a (maybe) thirteen year old! it sparked the passion of wonder and curiosity that you feel when you really found something that you love. But yea love is just chemicals in your brain so your “passion” is changeable, but im just projecting again arent i. we all do and thats ok, people shouldnt really feel bad about being shitty people unless you are like a rapist or a murderer (but im guessing most of them dont feel to bad if its out of malice) but things like being a narcasist, or maybe not saving someone being mugged for youre own saftey. its really just basic human behavior. that really does not justify anything that can be considered selfish, but if everyone shares traits that are “selfish” then its not that bad, its human.

Let’s be blunt. The United States has become two nations occupying the same country. When pressed, or in private, many would now agree. Fewer are willing to take the next step and accept that most people living in the United States today—certainly more than half—are not Americans in any meaningful sense of the term.
I don’t just mean the millions of illegal immigrants. Obviously, those foreigners who have bypassed the regular process for entering our country, and probably will never assimilate to our language and culture, are—politically as well as legally—aliens. I’m really referring to the many native-born people—some of whose families have been here since the Mayflower—who may technically be citizens of the United States but are no longer (if they ever were) Americans. They do not believe in, live by, or even like the principles, traditions, and ideals that until recently defined America as a nation and as a people. It is not obvious what we should call these citizen-aliens, these non-American Americans; but they are something else.
What about those who do consider themselves Americans? By and large, I am referring to the 75 million people who voted in the last election against the senile figurehead of a party that stands for mob violence, ruthless censorship, and racial grievances, not to mention bureaucratic despotism. Regardless of Trump’s obvious flaws, preferring his re-election was not a difficult choice for these voters. In fact—leaving aside the Republican never-Trumpers and some squeamish centrists—it was not a difficult choice for either side. Both Right and Left know where they stand today… and it is not together. Not anymore.
Those who wanted to Make America Great Again may refer to themselves as Republicans, though many realize that, apart from Trump, the party does not really care about them. Many may also, in some loose way, consider themselves conservatives. But among these plumbers, insurance salesmen, gym owners, and factory workers there’s one question you can pretty much guarantee they never discuss with their family and friends: “What kind of conservative are you?” This question has virtually no bearing on the problems that overshadow their lives.
It is still a question, however, that occupies intellectuals, journalists, and the world of think tanks. And this matters, unfortunately, because however sensible and down to earth the voters may be, an effective political movement needs intellectual leadership to organize and explain the movement’s purposes and goals. This leadership is still divided into—to name a few—neocons, paleocons (not to be confused with paleo-libertarians!) rad-trads, the dissident right, reformicons, etc. A lot of these labels are a distraction. But before I reject these disputes as mostly irrelevant, let me make a couple of points about why we can’t immediately leave this debate behind—and so why an essay like this is necessary.
Practically speaking, there is almost nothing left to conserve. What is actually required now is a recovery, or even a refounding, of America as it was long and originally understood but which now exists only in the hearts and minds of a minority of citizens.
This recognition that the original America is more or less gone sets the Claremont Institute for the Study of Statesmanship and Political Philosophy apart from almost everyone else on the Right. Paradoxically, the organization that has been uniquely devoted to understanding and teaching the principles of the American founding now sees with special clarity why “conserving” that legacy is a dead end. Overturning the existing post-American order, and re-establishing America’s ancient principles in practice, is a sort of counter-revolution, and the only road forward.
Conservatism, Inc. is worse than useless in this regard because it does not understand through perpetual study what Trump grasped by instinct. As if coming upon a man convulsing from an obvious poison, Trump at least attempted in his own inelegant way to expel the toxin. By contrast, the conservative establishment, or much of it, has been unwilling to recognize that our body politic is dying from these noxious “norms.” Keep taking the poison! it advises. A cynic might suppose that many elements on the right have made their peace with (and found a way to profit from) the progressive project of narcotizing the American people and turning us into a nation of slaves.
What is needed, of course, is a statesman who understands both the disease afflicting the nation, and the revolutionary medicine required for the cure. But no such figure has emerged, and it is unreasonable to pin our hopes on such a savior simply turning up.
What, then, are Americans to do?
If you are a zombie or a human rodent who wants a shadow-life of timid conformity, then put away this essay and go memorize the poetry of Amanda Gorman. Real men and women who love honor and beauty, keep reading.
Authentic Americans still want to have decent lives. They want to work, worship, raise a family, and participate in public affairs without being treated as insolent upstarts in their own country. Therefore, we need a conception of a stable political regime that allows for the good life.
The U.S. Constitution no longer works. But that fact raises more questions than answers. Can some parts of the system—especially at the local and state level—be preserved and strengthened? How would that work? How do we distinguish the parts that are salvageable from the parts that are hopeless? How did all this happen, anyway? The answers to these questions are not obvious. Having a coherent plan—thinking through what American citizenship used to mean, what made it noble and made the country worthy of patriotic love, and how to rebuild its best elements—requires input from people, and institutions, who have given these matters a lot of thought.

There are thousands of medical academics, researchers, clinicians and health policymakers who use Cochrane reviews every day in their work. The organization is also no secret to the 40,000 or so volunteers in over 130 countries who work under the banner of Cochrane, sifting, analyzing, and systematizing the body of evidence that underpins nearly every decision we make in healthcare. But alas, for the vast majority of patients and consumers of healthcare, the Cochrane Collaboration is a secret. I decided to write this book because I wanted to let the world in on the secret, which is vital both for the creators of health journalism as well as the consumers of health journalism.
The fact the Collaboration has become one of the world’s premier sources of independent and quality information about health care rests on a key principle: Individual studies to determine how well a health treatment works are not sufficient to make the best possible decisions. Higher up the evidence pyramid, you’ll find what the Collaboration produces: systematic reviews and meta-analyses which encompass all of the studies both published and unpublished on a particular question, studies that have been analyzed and statistically combined to create a summary of what is reliably reliable. When this is done in a methodologically sound and defensible way, what one hopes for is a consistent picture that points in the direction of benefit or harm related to that question.
I was approached by the organization in 2012 just prior to the 20th anniversary of the Collaboration and I wasn’t a stranger to its methods. I was periodically attending the annual meeting known as the Colloquium for at least a decade, and I was able to see — up close and personal — how these people operate. I was frankly inspired by a spirit of inquisitiveness and generosity that energizes their work. It was amazing to watch people who genuinely struggled with trying to find truth in health research, a process that’s messy, complicated, usually political, and always contentious, and motivated by an intense desire to turn large amounts of data into pictures that makes sense to doctors and to patients.
A recent example of the benefits of systematic reviews of evidence came across my plate when I saw the SPRINT (Systolic Blood Pressure Intervention) Trial. The study measured intensive blood pressure-lowering targets against “standard” blood pressure-lowering targets in people who had moderate hypertension. The trial was halted in September of this year and received a huge amount of media attention with the message that “lower is better.”  In other words, those patients who are given the more intensive blood pressure-lowering treatment did better than those who were given the standard treatment. For me the story doesn’t end there, because I asked the next question: What does Cochrane say?
For me, a single study is a chapter in a story that has a past, a history, and a trajectory. A new study is rarely going to be “game changing,” because you need to know how the new evidence fits into the existing systematized body of evidence — and that’s what Cochranites do.
The Cochrane Hypertension Review group at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver has looked closely at the ‘lower is better’ issue. They were able to take the results of this trial, add it to the 10 existing trials of lower vs. standard blood pressure targets, to conclude the big picture does not change.  Despite SPRINT’s breathless headlines around the world, the systematic evidence, which should be considered much more reliable, says that patients given the most intensive drug regimen to lower their blood pressure down to say 120 over 80 do not do any better than those who are given standard therapy. They don’t live longer or have fewer hospitalizations.  A review of new evidence in its proper context delivers huge rewards to the millions of people around the world–and their doctors–when they decide how aggressively they will pursue lowering their blood pressures.
[Editor’s note: The Cochrane Group’s conclusions regarding standard vs. lower blood pressure targets are expected to be published in January 2016. The results mentioned in the preceding paragraph are based on a preliminary analysis discussed in a telephone interview with Jim Wright, coordinating editor for the Cochrane Hypertension Review Group. These results should be considered tentative pending publication of the full updated Cochrane review.]
The “secret” in my book’s subtitle also refers to this idea: that even though the Cochrane Collaboration, outside of the world of academia or research, is largely unknown, it has, over the years, been able to expose some very troubling truths about what we think we know or don’t know about medicine and health care treatments.
One of my interviewees in the book explained it this way: Think of the body of medical procedures, screening programs, and drug treatments as a pie. If you were to divide that pie into thirds, the first third would contain all of those procedures or treatments that we know are underpinned by quality medical research and for which we can truly say with some degree of certainty that they “work.” The second piece of pie would contain those things we routinely do but we don’t have strong evidence that the benefits exceed the harms, because they haven’t been well studied. The last third would contain many things that we do in medicine and health care where there is evidence that they do more harm than good, and we should stop doing those things.
So whether you’re a patient or a journalist, you might want to ask yourself, “Which third am I looking at?” whenever you are presented with a new piece of research or an expert assertion about a treatment, a medical device, a screening tool, or a new medication.
As journalists we are there to provide context, and there is no better “context” for health care evidence than the body of 5,000 reviews in the Cochrane Library. The abstracts and the plain language summaries of all of Cochrane reviews are available on their website. The in-depth reviews are made available free to journalists who belong to the Association of Healthcare Journalists. They’re also available at most university libraries.

With their Twitter pile-on, some of this country’s most prominent broadcasters, editors, and journalists effectively deemed cultural appropriation acceptable—even worthy of acclaim. Many of the people holding the levers of power in Canadian media did not hesitate to put their names, money, and various other forms of privilege behind a glowing endorsement of cultural appropriation. In a media landscape where journalists like Desmond Cole are being told by their editors that they cannot be “both actor and critic,” how can we justify having editors who publicly support an appropriation award? If, indeed, we are to take the Star seriously in its claim that the problem was that Cole became the news, what say you to these editors?
It is telling of a hollowness in many of the media standards that shape our national conversation. We have seen, time and time again, that “advocacy” is a flexible term that is often mobilized primarily against marginalized writers. It is impossible to ignore the fact that all of these editors and journalists—some of whom have begun to issue rather lacklustre apologies—are all white.
Writers of colour like myself know all too well the discrimination that permeates the editorial processes and newsrooms around this country. Occasionally, we share these experiences with the public only to receive hate mail, or to be gaslit: you’re imagining these things, we are told. Our families and loved ones know in detail the challenges we faced. Episodes like Thursday night’s Twitter thread expand the conversation beyond our inner circle and made the oppression publicly visible.
For too long, the Canadian media has trafficked in doublespeak. The experiences of marginalized writers are routinely deemed “too political” or “biased,” while other writers peddle oppression under the guise of freedom of speech. After all, as Walrus editor-in-chief Jonathan Kay wrote in a tweet on Thursday night: “The mobbing of [Niedzviecki] is what we get when we let identity-politics fundamentalists run riot. Sad and shameful.”
Mobbing, fundamentalists, riot, sad, shameful: is it just me or are these words better suited to describing issues like carding, boil-water advisories, and immigration detention? Should we not reserve our anger these kinds of issues, human rights issues affecting vulnerable populations, rather than protecting someone pushing for a racist award?

With that established, let’s get going on the reading and the chatting!
QUESTION 1. What has been your favorite scene in the comic so far? What specifically did you like about it?
QUESTION 2. At the moment, who is your favorite character? What about that character earns them this favor?
QUESTION 3. Who or what do you think “Dark Pooky” is? Why does “Dark Pooky” refer to Pooky as Ptolemy and what does the supposed missing gap of 50 years have to do with it? What do you think “Dark Pooky” has intended for Pooky?
QUESTION 4. What is the mysterious glow that surrounds Penny that only Agent Wesson and Agent Smith/Ed can see? Unrelatedly, do you think Penny will fix the robot she found? How will either of these scenarios affect her and the other characters’ futures?
AntiBunny
Hi everyone. I'm the author of AntiBunny. I'll just be quietly reading here and gathering feedback. I really appreciate this opportunity to hear some in depth thoughts on my work, and as always I invite you to draw your own conclusions.
Delphina
Are there navigation arrows somewhere I'm not seeing?
RebelVampire
theyre on the right side bar
Delphina
Ahhh, thank you
RebelVampire
QUESTION 5. What do you think happened in Pandora’s past that made her so well-known but ultimately got her killed by Agent Wesson? Do you believe Mulligan will get his revenge at the end of the day?
RebelVampire
1) im picking two scenes cause i can and nobody can stop me. the first scene i really liked was the warehouse confrontation with the bomb. i liked pooky both got some answers but also basically went "nope im out yo." the combination worked for me and made it both humorous and narratively satisfying. the other scene i liked was the scene where hannibal is waiting in the hospital and just casually talking to mulligan without realizing who he is. then mulligan reveals himself in the most crass way possible. again, i just like the combination. its funny, but narratively satisfying since i kept wondering when wed get to see penelope's dad ever since he was mentioned. 2) penelope. Idk. theres just something i really like about penelope. She's go this good sense of optimism and faith, but shes not overbearing or crazy. And even if she's not some rebellious sleuth or fighter or anything, the comic shows that her words have the power to change things just as much the fighting and other elements. 3) Well given a scene that was part of nailbat's story, Pooky is pretty obviously involved with enchanted forest. I imagine some boss type figure. And Pooky might be some prized experiment somehow? like the next step in bunny evolution or something like that. but maybe pooky had like the longest incubation period known to all sapient kind. As for what dark pooky intends, more evil science. I mean you don't get to be called dark pooky if you do the good science.
4) I'm not sure I have good theories about the glow. Like, maybe again, another part of dark pooky science somehow. Like a desire mutation that is a signal for the next stage of evolution. As for the robot, yes, i think penny will. and I'm really looking forward to it considering who that robot is. I think it's really going to be an emotional rollercoaster for everyone. 5) well given superheroing is a thing in this world, probably that or something. maybe not superheros but like a step down. like neighborhood watch on steroids. or maybe a group of detectives. i think pandora discovered something she shouldnt have though, which put her at odds with agent wesson. as for mulligan's revenge, nah i highly doubt it. more just because i think someone is going to get to agent wesson long before he does. and narratively speaking, i think mulligan's arc will be more about putting his kids first and revenge second.
RebelVampire
QUESTION 6. Do you believe that Pooky will once again become a successful reporter? What trouble might Pooky’s pursuit of this cause? Alternatively, what good might come of it?
RebelVampire
QUESTION 7. Who do you think Agent Wesson works for? Also, what do you think happened to Agent Wesson after the bridge explosion, and what consequences will that have for the story?
RebelVampire
6) I don't think Pooky is gonna rekindle that journalist career. Mostly because if Pooky lives to see the end of this story I will be very surprised. However, I think Pooky's pursuit will change the world regardless and force humans and rabbits alike to confront ugly truths about themselves and the world theyve created. Cause that seems to be a heavy theme and Pooky has shown to know how to work the media to drive that message home. 7) Enchanted Forest. And Agent Wesson is probably alive and probably plotting some hardcore revenge against Pooky. Agent Wesson will also bide time and wait until we've basically forgotten the character and then blamo, everything is ruined, sad times are had, etc. etc. etc. It will not be a good time
RebelVampire
QUESTION 8. Do you think Penelope will manage to testify against Mr. Huge, or will she inevitably be silenced by the many obstacles in her way? In the meantime, what do you think Auntie Fae is up to? How will this affect Penelope?
RebelVampire
QUESTION 9. Do you think that the characters will be able to change Gritty City and/or human-rabbit relations for the better by the end of the comic? Of the characters, who do you think has the highest chance of doing so and why?
RebelVampire
8) I think Penelope will manage. Shes the determined sort who will probably persevere. Although I also feel that her testimony wont matter and that inevitably the bad guy will win. As for Auntie Fae, I'm not sure besides being racist. Although I actually think she has a bigger agenda then the characters realize quite yet. In the sense that theyll think she just wants to get rid of rabbits when shes up to bigger things. like helping out evil scientists or something. 9) I think they'll change relationships for the better but not by much. Change is a slow, slow process and the more you try to force it, the less it usually works. But that's okay and I think whatll maatter is just changing the hearts of even a few ppl. Like what happened with Nailbat because I found Nailbat's story was really strong because of that aspect. Even though Nailbat was just one person, he changed some people lives and also had his life changed. If I had to pick someone who would actually instigate change, then Penelope. Cause Penelope is a badass with words insofar and really seems to leave an impact on all the people she interacts with.

i haven't been able to get through the archive yet, but right now my favorite scene is when we first see penelope street preaching. i don't know why, but I like the idea of this stalking amy-rose-type turning out to be something completely different
my favorite character so far is juju. gets introduced as a witch, and immediately gets herself trapped in a doll. love her.

QUESTION 10. What are you most looking forward to in the comic? Also, do you have any final thoughts to share overall?
RebelVampire
10) a lot of stuff. like im really looking forward to the robot being fixed, to pooky exploring the dark pooky stuff more, seeing penelope more, and so forth. theres a lot of really great threads that are building up and id love to see them start paying off and how cause im sure itll be epic! in general, while it took me a bit to get into it, i really enjoyed the comic once i did and the story started to show its hidden depths.
Delphina
I just want to pop in and say that I did make it partially through the archive this week, but probably won't have time to finish, and thought Penelope was a very cute character. I paged through a bit of the later pages too and loved seeing how the art/craftmanship progressed.
Delphina
((I don't know what the policy is on critique in these segments, so I will definitely strike this from the record if it's not appropriate @RebelVampire , but when the story started alternating between the Pooky storyline and the Nailbat storyline every other page is when I started to lose focus and eventually dropped off reading because it was too confusing to keep track of the story. I think these storylines would benefit from not being mixed in the archives. I definitely know the challenge of spending time fixing old stuff versus using that time to move forward, but if you decided to migrate the story to a PHP-based solution in the future instead of static HTML, archive curation would be a factor I'd strongly recommend considering.))
RebelVampire
@Delphina critiques are allowed as long as theyre constructive, respectful, and dont become the predominant topic of the conversation. so in my book this one is fine.

Let’s talk about Today
It’s Wednesday. We are on the verge of the weekend where Vegas gets snow, Los Angeles gets frozen, and the polar vortex dips down further into the states.
I think it’s worth mentioning that a number of comic book fans have clamored for the BP movie, but aren’t of the opinion that the movie should win an Oscar. Worth mentioning because as good as they thought Black Panther was/is, they have their wits about them to tell folks that it shouldn’t win.
That’s alright though. It made a billion dollars.
Tumblr media
In other news, sections of comic book readership do not want to see Captain Marvel. Why? Because Brie Larson’s press tour offends them.
Now, I understand how what she said might’ve rubbed a few of the white male population the wrong way. And it seems like there is a larger swath of the journalist population occupying the white demographic. Does that mean we shouldn’t? It’s a telling tale if we are. But we have to assess our societal engagements before we start pointing fingers at white men and why they’re getting preferences other parts of the population aren’t.
I’m sure there’s some study out regarding the population of folks looking at comic books and going to comic book based movies. We have to look at the statistics of folks looking at the comic books to really understand what’s going on. I’m willing to bet- without looking at the numbers, that a majority of that crowd is... drumroll please... white. We were watching X-Men in 2001. We were watching Fantastic Four back in 2004. We were watching Punisher with Thomas Jane, and all three Blade films with Wesley Snipes. Black superhero vampire/human killing creatures of the night with swords and guns and a new-age Van Helsing? Yeah, we’ll watch the hell out of that. Same as white guy systematically and almost surgically picking off targets who had a hand in the murder of his wife and kid.
On topic, we watch a majority black cast in a film about a black superhero in a fictional African country. Why? because it’s cool and they wrote that script like diamonds. We’ll also watch a film about a mixed race kid in Brooklyn becoming a new Spider-Man. Why? Because it’s cool and the script was diamonds.
When movies decided to get all preachy about it and made their stand in trying to say something to us instead of trying to entertain us? yeah, that’s always been the case. We were just too young to remember it. Dark Knight? Remember the message of good people not willing to do a bad thing to prove a point to the Joker? Remember the bad people not willing to do a bad thing to also prove a point to the Joker? And remember Batman not willing to kill the Joker because he was better than that?
But the main difference here is that the films were made well. They had good writing, awesome action, acting on point, and visual effects that wowed audiences. Did the message diminish when the entertainment value was raised? Nope. I think it helped that Wesley Snipes was black to ease our way into accepting more minority actors into film leads. We started to realize that the landscape could change, and we were fine with it, as long as it looked cool and was well-written. If it was a dumpster fire of epic proportions, then the message was all the more lost on audiences.
And here we are today with Captain Marvel. Before the movie has even been released, it’s become a divisive issue before having seen it. Let’s just say, I think let the movie speak for itself rather than have the actors try to preach it, but that’s just me.
Despite the PR madness and some of the activism both bad and good for the movie, I will still watch it. I’m hesitant about it, because separating the character from the actor, and without having seen the actor, I think it’ll be harder to make an argument for one against the other,
Yeah, Brie Larson has said things, and those things might not be the best given the current climate. But, things were said, and whether or not she’s the best pick for the main threat to Thanos come the next Avengers film, she’s the one that we got, and we have to see what she does with the role,
The way she’s put forward in the commercials for the film, and for the next phase of Marvel, she’s got the binary powers and a ton more abilities than what her character did when Rogue stole her abilities. So, she can kill Thanos with a thought from how Marvel is putting her forward. But my problem with that is not so much the female aspect, but the Adam Warlock aspect.
Tumblr media
Adam Warlock is kind of a heroic figure compared to Thanos, in that he was the only one with a power level on par with the mad titan. He eventually gets the infinity Gauntlet and as the Marvel Messiah, distributes the stones to six protectorates amongst the 616 universe, creating the illuminati.
Then we got that little tease at the end of Guardians of the Galaxy 2, where the incubator with “Adam” was featured. A lot of fans speculated that this would play into the plot of Avengers: Infinity War, and that Warlock would show up and save the day, doing all the crap that the heroes struggled to do to defeat the purple menace.
My problem with that, in writing, is that it’s a cheap out for stakes in the story progression. Here we have the heroes struggling with their all to defeat the tyrant, and here comes a character with no development, no connection to the audience, and blasts the main villain who the other guys we had struggled, cried, bled and strove with over so many years had trouble with.
It leaves a bad taste in my mouth thinking about it as a writer. I want that struggle, that underdog coming in and doing the impossible to defeat an impossible foe. I’m glad for that reason they didn’t have Adam Warlock come in and be a mister fix-it for the heroes. And having Thanos win against our heroes just put the stakes in the story that made us as an audience, bawl in the aisles like babies.
And here we have a woman about to do something similar, or posited to be in that same tone.

My First Year at #TCAF
Best TCAF - The Toronto Comic Arts Festival moment (after that surprise Junot Diaz visit of course) was getting approached by Cartoon Network to discuss my ideas/pitch for a new show on their platform.
Worst TCAF moment (after being cursed out by the custodial for using the bathroom at the library at 5:05pm) was 'my location'.
*clears throat*
The third floor was great! I was grateful to be seated in the least crowded level, considering that it was my first year there, it made sense to be up there not surrounded by hundreds of people in a hot room for 8 hours straight. But it was the being seated in between a British publication(?) and a yt cartoon guy that made me feel a bit unsafe:uneasy:anxious.
Even though these individuals were quite nice and kept to themselves working hard like we all did, I could not help but feel the pressure of having to 'keep my voice down' and having to 'keep conversation short' with people who would visit to share a good time and talk about the themes in my work which (obvi) mainly revolve around decentering whiteness.
It was awkward every-time people left my table, after talking about intersectional feminism, sex, war, shaving all the hair from your vagina with the only purpose of taking and epic p***y pic, and of course, the recurrent 'yeah no....I dont know if there are any Indigenous artists here'...Was tough...You know it was 'awkward silence mode' whenever my people would leave the table, because the person sitting right next to me(on my left), again, quite nice and lovely, who makes work about "what would happen if baby jesus had super powers?" probably was thinking the same thing as me "who is this person? which planet did they come from?!! and why they sit us together?"
Like I don't even know who to feel bad for - me - for feeling the need to silence myself and tone myself down to make my white neighbors feel OK or rather non threatened by my presence/laughter/speaking in another language/subjects of my artwork...OR feel bad for the super baby Jesus guy who probably knew that apart from the weather and well...the weather, there was nothing else that we had in common that we could talk about in at least a meaningful way.
Whenever things got less busy at our spot, it got super awkward and tense - and to add the cherry on top to that sour cake...to my right side, it was quite obvious that the constant "HI LIDO I LOVE YOU LET ME GIVE YOU A HUG" made my British neighbors irk because the hugs would happen much too close to their carefully arranged pile of super nice hardcover science fiction novels, like EVERYTIME A BUTT WOULD TOUCH THE CORNER OF THEIR TABLE WAS SO UNCONFORTABLE!!
Again...how can you break the ice with your tabling neighbor when you were just speaking about 'holy shit white journalists are doing the most rn with that appropriation prize scam".........And dont get me wrong...I know I can only do my thing and worry about myself and all of that, but this really was a question about being confortable in my lane and in my own skin.
I have been tabling since I was 13 years old, so this is something I take seriously, so seriously that I waited 4 years to actually submit my work to this version of TCAF, because I know how every single cartoonist, publication, writer etc LIVES FOR THIS and I have learned (better late than never) to not take space from others far more ready and involved than me. I knew for this version of tcaf, I was ready, finally.
And I am not saying that I do not want to sit next to white folks, I am just saying that perhaps knowing before hand who you will be sitting next to (for a total of two full 8 hour days), would be super helpful. Like i was never really into blind dates you know?
The reason why Indigenous/trans/poc are significantly under represented at an event like TCAF is of course the (non)access to money. I live in TO, so spending 150-200 whatever on half a table is not so out of reach, but to many emerging/up and coming and future Indigenous cartoonists, thats a bit much! I wonder if there is a sliding scale artist fee designed specifically to cater to black trans womxn for example, also, I can think of at least 3 poc/two spirit/trans fols who are very talented but who simply wont make the trip to TCAF for the same reasons I was feeling a bit uneasy at my spot, only that like..multiply that experience times 1000!
Shit! If womxn and women in general make less money than men, shouldnt we be paying a bit less than the men for a table at these art fair convention events? I mean, they get published significantly more than us gxrls so.........
Is there a grant available to Indigenous/trans/artists of colour that could help alleviate some of this financial stress? I mean, it was my first time at TCAF, and I probably missed so much of the behind the scenes that these issues might already be taking place or at least had started a thinking session or acting upon the issues that come with it, but from the surface and from what I experienced this weekend, the doing or the trying to do better was not quite evident - and
please (of course) correct me if I am wrong in any of this. I am not friends with the the patricks and the deforges or the koyamas or D&QS or the gemmacorrels, you know I just do my own thing and feel blessed!
But I do know that zine culture, cartoons, posters, prints and such come from a his/herstory of punk and DIY culture, all products and work of black and indigenous resistance, of poor folks! So when I go to these conventions and I don't see me everywhere, I feel as though maybe it is not for me, and that is b u l l s h i t .....
PHEEWWWPPHH!! SO MANY FEELS!!!! Kudos for reading this far if you did!
In the end, I still had a terrific time, and was able to make amazing connections. I feel inspired, motivated and above all, loved. Thank you for saying hi and for supporting my work, wether if you did in person or online! See you at the next hot mess! <3
EDIT: Shoutout to Andrew at TCAF for helping me so much when I was super lost and confused, and also shoutout to the many volunteers who were super quick at hooking me up with info and anything else we needed. Shoutout to all the different people commenting on my hair, like cartoonists KNOW how to acknowledge the effort that takes to get two perfect buns together.
With love and criticism,Yours Truly - Lido Pimienta
