Taylor Swift Is a Punk-Rock Rebel — and She Just Proved It to the World

Her new deal with Universal Music Group benefits the wider artistic community – in lieu of a deal which wholly benefits herself

“I’m surprisingly nonconfrontational — you would not believe how much I hate conflict.”

Taylor Swift, speaking to Rolling Stone in 2014 about her ongoing feud with an unnamed female pop star. Such a quote may, justifiably, lead you to presuppose that Swift lacks a certain steeliness — that, when it comes to life’s toughest showdowns, she goes along with the crowd.

This week, such assumptions have been utterly eviscerated. On Monday (November 19th), Swift revealed that, following a short period as a free agent, she had signed a new global recordings deal with Universal Music Group. The decision saw the singer leave her label home for the past 12 years, Nashville’s Big Machine.

As part of this new agreement, Swift maintains ownership of her future master-recordings rights — likely by licensing them to UMG for a period of, say, 10 years, after which she will regain full control.

This is a pretty mutinous achievement for a pop megastar, following decades of the standard major-label demand to own some (or all) of these rights in perpetuity. (Legendary bygone clashes between Prince and George Michael with their record companies show how fraught this deal structure could become.)

Yet Swift didn’t stop there. In announcing her agreement with UMG, she revealed, “There was one condition which meant more to me than any other deal point. As part of my new contract with Universal Music Group, I asked that any sale of their Spotify shares result in a distribution of money to their artists, non-recoupable.”

To understand the profundity of this gesture — and the extent of its surprising selflessness — requires a brief bit of background.

According to MBW, when the three major labels (Universal, Sony and Warner) — plus indie-label rep Merlin — first struck licensing deals with Spotify in 2008, they received an 18 percent cumulative stake in the company.

Over the years, this equity stake has been diluted by new investors in Spotify, meaning that, by the time the Swedish streaming giant floated on the New York Stock Exchange in April, that 18 percent had been cut in half, to nine percent.

Sony has since sold 50 percent of its shares in Spotify for gross proceeds of $768 million. Warner has sold 100 percent of its shares, for $504 million.

As of now, Universal hasn’t sold any of its shares — and continues to own an estimated 3.5 percent stake in Spotify. Depending on Spotify’s ever-fluctuating market cap, this equity has, in the past month, been worth anywhere between $800 million and $900 million.

When an artist signs to a record company, they are typically paid an “advance” check — akin to a bank loan. The profit they then (hopefully) generate for their record company goes against this debt until it is “recouped,” at which point the act can start taking home the full extent of their agreed royalties.

The problem: Most artists never recoup. The record business has long been built on a few pop megastars (howdy, Miss Swift) essentially paying for the careers of countless artists who lose money for the likes of Universal, Sony and Warner.

To give you an idea of the steep odds: The oft-cited estimate is that five percent of all label signings recoup. Yep: Around 19 out of 20 artists signed to record companies have never paid back the money they received upfront.

Back in June, Sony shocked the music industry by announcing that, when it came to sharing its Spotify stock profits with artists, it would ignore these unrecouped balances.

This was an unprecedented moment of generosity from a multinational corporation. As a result, sources estimate that Sony has now paid its artists around a third of the $768 million it cashed in from its Spotify shareholding; thousands upon thousands of Sony-signed artists have consequently ended up with money in their bank that they had no right to expect.

Warner, however, took a different approach. After cashing out its $504 million stake in Spotify, the company shared 25 percent ($126 million) with its artists’ accounts. But it didn’t ignore unrecouped debt — meaning that a significant chunk of that $126 million stayed within the firm’s coffers.

Onto Universal Music Group, the world’s biggest record company. UMG confirmed in March that, whenever it banked its Spotify stock money, it would share it with artists — but was light on detail as to exactly how.

Taylor Swift just nailed down that detail.

Industry whispers suggest that all three major labels chased Swift for a record deal, while the likes of Spotify, Apple and leading telcos are also speculated to have been interested in luring her toward a direct partnership — whatever the cost.

Her non-recoupable Spotify clause was a vital reason she signed with Universal. A source close to the UMG deal told me this week, “Agreeing a sharing process for the Spotify money, and ensuring that was non-recoupable for artists, was very important to Taylor, and she was very passionate about it throughout the negotiations. Universal was already there, philosophically speaking, especially after Sony set the bar earlier this year, so it became an easy conversation.”

The source added, “People will of course speculate it’s about who could pay the biggest advance check, but that’s not correct: Money’s money and Taylor Swift is worth a lot of it, but that genuinely didn’t have a whole lot to do with her decision.

“In the end, she wanted a company who understood artists, who was philosophically aligned on artist compensation and who she trusted could grow and protect her brand globally.”

A spot of number-crunching shows just how significant Swift’s Spotify stipulation really is — and how she has benefited her peers far more than herself with its execution.

First: How much money did Swift guarantee her fellow artists by demanding the non-recoupable Spotify proviso from Universal?

Swift claims that, according to Universal, its Spotify payouts will involve “much better terms than paid out previously by other major labels.” Let’s take Sony as the benchmark which, as noted, apparently paid out around 33 percent of its recent Spotify stock-sale haul to artists.

Universal’s 3.5 percent stake in Spotify has, over the past couple of months, been worth a broad average of $850 million. A third of this money, as a projected artist payment, would come out to $283 million. Now, remember that up to 95 percent of artists are believed to remain in debt with their record companies.

It’s not accurate to suggest all these artists’ advances were for the same figure, of course, and we have no way of knowing what level of unrecouped balances each owes Universal.

Yet in an age of multimillion-dollar advances, it’s fair to assume that Swift just gifted her fellow Universal artists tens of millions of dollars in unrecouped money, which her major label could have legitimately retained.

The most impressive part of Swift’s settlement, however, is just how little it will directly benefit her versus her fellow superstars.

According to Spotify-monitoring site Kworb, Swift is the 84th most-streamed artist in the history of Spotify, with 1.59 billion chart-eligible plays on the service. This, despite the fact that, multiple times in recent years, she’s been the biggest-selling artist on the planet.

Two key reasons Swift is so far down these Spotify rankings: First, she pulled her catalog off Spotify in 2014 in protest at its ad-funded structure, as she complained that “it is my opinion that music should not be free.” (Her albums didn’t return to the platform until three years later.) And second, Swift continues to “window” her album releases. We saw this with last year’s million-plus-selling Reputation, which didn’t land on Spotify until two weeks after it was available to purchase in stores and on iTunes.

To put things into perspective, Swift’s 1.59 billion chart-eligible streams on Spotify are nearly 10 times smaller than the tally of the biggest artist in the platform’s history, Drake (with more than 15 billion streams) — who also happens to be signed to Universal.

More to the point, Spotify revealed “Content Hours Per Monthly Active User” stats at the end of 2017, which according to my calculation, show that the service now hosts around 2 billion streams every single day.

Universal, following Sony and Warner, will almost certainly pay out the artists’ share of its circa $900 million Spotify money on a pro-rata basis, giving the greatest portion of its cash to the most popular acts on the service.

Swift will not factor in the top 10 or even top 20 of these artists. She has just struck a deal which truly benefits the wider artistic community in lieu of a deal which wholly benefits herself.

This isn’t the first time Swift has fiercely protected the income of her peers: In 2015, she publicly castigated Apple for not compensating artists for a three-month free trial of Apple Music.

In doing so, Swift risked her relationship with arguably the most powerful company in the music business. Apple quickly relented, and Swift accepted its public apology.

Some may snipe that Swift is “obsessed with fame, money and revenge”, but the statistical truth of the matter tells a very different story. Swift, as unlikely as it seems, is a true punk-rock rebel — one taking the fight to huge corporations, while using her almighty commercial clout to push and prod them into doing the right thing.

Making Soldier 76′s Gloves: A Tutorial

Yay gloves! This is a walk-through that shows how I made them. I did make several mistakes along the way, but hopefully there is still value to be found in the process. Enjoy!

As usual, I started by hoarding references. The 3D model I downloaded was very helpful for this.

Several months ago at the beginning of this adventure, I sat down and planned how all the costume components would be built. At the time I intended to use spray adhesive to tack down some type of stretchy, plastic-y fabric--probably vinyl. Later I learned that my library’s makerspace had a die cutter, so “stretch vinyl” was replaced with heat transfer vinyl. I did choose to omit the grey palm, but otherwise these are accurate to the game model.

The pre-existing gloves were a pair of these from Costco. In hind sight, they weren’t 100% ideal; see that seam across the knuckles? It’s going to cause trouble later.

Next I needed to make a digital cut file for the Silhouette die cutter. Die cutters are basically digital cutting machines... sort of like printing with a knife. You give them a file with lines, and a knife (or other tool) traces them onto materials like paper, fabric, and vinyl. The software requires vectors to cut, so I used Adobe Illustrator. If you don’t have access to this software, the open source equivalent Inkscape would work just as well. I began by very carefully measuring the gloves to make a janky but correctly scaled pattern. The red armor was drawn over the top.

Next, the templates were printed and laid over the glove to check for scale. as you can see, the guard on top of the hand is much too large. I made a few  adjustments to the paper templates, scanned them, and modified the vectors to fit.

Then it was cutting time! Only the finger and knuckle guard bases were made from heat transfer vinyl. (If I didn’t have access to the die cutter, I would have traced the templates onto masking tape and used them as a mask for fabric paint.) 

Next I wanted to make the knuckle guards. These could have easily been made with Sculpey, but I sit next to a 3D printer all day at work so I took the easy way out. 

As normal with 3D prints, these had a distinct texture. I decided to take the opportunity and try out Automotive Filler Primer since it’s supposed to be the bee’s knees for smoothing 3D prints. Sanding PLA sucks, so I’ll jump on any possible opportunity to avoid it. In preparation for spray painting, the knuckle guards were stuck on a piece of cardboard with hot glue. A little clearance from the surface means their edges will be more clean, plus I don’t need to keep track of 8 tiny pieces of plastic. The hot glue will peel off cleanly later.

From what I had heard, you don’t need to sand filler primer because it self-levels. After one coat, I was not so sure. 

Three coats in and the ridges were actually more pronounced, so I broke out the sandpaper.

Amazing!!! It looks awful but dang did it feel smooth and it sanded SO MUCH EASIER than PLA! 220 grit paper was plenty remove material.

After two more passes of spraying and sanding, the guards were looking pretty smooth. Here they are after their final spray:

Fun fact, that stuff will clog up your paper something fierce! Buy a lot of sandpaper if you have large things to surface.

Next up was painting. Normally I would spray paint or airbrush something like this, but the weather has not been cooperating lately so I hand-painted them instead.

Since the red paint is somewhat translucent, I gave the parts a thin coating of white first. Then red was layered on until I achieved full coverage.

The final detail for the knuckle guards was a thin, black line running around their base. Any permanent marker will do.

The knuckle guards still need weathering, but I prefer to weather everything at once so I moved on to building the hand guards. Using the paper template from Illustrator, I traced the main shape onto 6mm foam. You will notice some indents running along the flat surface:

Those were recreated by scoring the foam with an X-acto knife. When blasted with a heat gun, the foam will contract slightly to create a groove (pictures of this later).

I added a second layer to the guards with 2mm craft foam.

In order to emphasize the angles, I carved a teeny grove with my pen knife and removed the excess material with a pair of tweezers.

This channel helps the foam bend a little sharper. It might seem subtle, but the effect was worth it.

Next, I used a sharpened aluminum tube to punch perfect circles into the foam. You can find these at most hobby stores and sharpen them with a needle file--also to be found at most hobby stores. The holes were expanded into slots using my handy X-acto. This was surprisingly hard to do neatly; I wish EVA foam was a little more dense :/

The parts were adhered together with contact cement. I had to do this outside and it was dark, so I don’t have good pictures :( As a last step before painting, I used a heat gun to give them a gentle curve and emphasize those grooves. Unfortunately, I was a little liberal with the heat and you can see some low-key melting. Oops. Given the size of these parts, it was an interesting challenge to attempt without gloves.

For painting, I decided to use my airbrush. I was gifted a setup yeeeeeeeears ago and I hardly ever use it. Time to change that! I primed the foam with this all-purpose primer which claimed to be slightly flexible. This is a lie. Don’t buy this brand of primer if you need something to be flexible!!

Like the knuckle guards, I gave the hand guards a light pass with white so it would take less red to reach full coverage. Full disclosure, I kind of suck with air-brushes. See that weirdo blob on the left corner of the left guard? That’s what happens when you spray too much paint with an air-brush. They also had a funky texture which I believe was a result of too much paint at once.

For weathering, I used 400 grit sandpaper to remove paint from corners and edges revealing the primer beneath. I think it gives a pretty neat effect! Grime was a mixture of Mars Black, Burnt Umber, and water. Finally, a coat of brush-on varnish sealed the paint job.

It was only after applying the varnish that I realized it was glossy, so I misted the parts with Matte Fixative meant for sealing drawings. This is not ideal and you should be smarter than me and buy the right varnish to begin with.

Finally, it was time to add the finger pieces and assemble the gloves! This was done with an ancient (circa 1970′s) iron, a scrap of muslin, some cardboard, and sewing pins.

Note about the vinyl: There is such a thing as stretchy heat transfer vinyl. I didn’t know this when purchasing, but stretchy would definitely have been preferable. The fingers of a glove are constantly flexing and moving, so over time my regular vinyl will break down. I did verify that my pattern would stretch, but you should still purchase the proper variety if you choose to do something like this. Thankfully the pattern I cut allowed the material to stretch somewhat.

Once cut, the vinyl needed weeding. Weeding is the process of removing everything you don’t need from the piece to be transferred. While there are specific tools available for this task, I like using an X-acto knife. After you get a piece started, tweezers can help remove the rest. Be very careful during this step; sometimes the machine doesn’t quite slice all the way through and you can pull off the wrong parts.

With the parts weeded, it was time to iron them in place. Heat transfer vinyl needs to be pressed while perfectly flat. The fingers of these gloves have gussets on each side which equals a lot of fabric and seams in a small area. Such construction makes them form-fitting and comfortable, but I couldn't get them to lay flat. To remedy this I made an insertable cardboard finger and pinned the fabric in place. It was important NOT to stretch the fabric while doing so or else the vinyl would crumple when un-pinned.

With the fabric secured, I attempted to stick the vinyl in place using the mildly adhesive cover plastic. Alas, it just wouldn’t stay, so I used a snugly pinned piece of muslin to hold it down. 15 seconds of pressing with the iron, and ta-dah! Red decals :)

These gloves are two sizes too big for me in case you couldn’t tell :)

Remember how I mentioned that seam across the back causing trouble? Unfortunately it runs right through the middle of a decal. It was very tricky to iron without burning the vinyl and it’s kind of ugly. 10-foot rule will save me, but it could have been avoided by buying better gloves.

The last step was gluing the hand and knuckle guards in place. Because the fabric is stretchy but my parts are curved, I needed to put the gloves on Casey before gluing down anything rigid. Alas, I don’t have many images here because Casey didn’t feel like being a hand model and we were outside because of glue  fumes. Each hand guard got a thorough application of E6000 in the center with hot glue around the edges. I wanted the strength of E6000 but needed the quick dry time of hot glue, so this worked fairly well. Overflowed hotglue was colored with a Sharpie and disappears from a distance. 

More E6000 was used to fix the knuckle guards. Then the gloves were tossed into the Bin of Shame ™ to cure without fumigating my room.

After two days of curing, everything was finished! I'm really happy with how they turned out :D

Expansion of Slavery in the South 

The expanision of slavery in the South was fueled and caused by the continued importance of cotton. Even though, slavery was outlawed in the North, in the South, there was no sight of slavery coming to a halt. Cotton, along with other cash crops, sustained the Southern economy and slavery was “necessary” in the eyes of whites. Cash crops, which are defined as "readily salable crops grown for commercial sale and export rather than local use" (White, Bay, Martin Jr. 175), are what sustained the economy in the South. The cash crops were sugar, rice, tobacco, hemp, and most importantly cotton. Cotton fueled the expansion of slavery in the 19th century because this crop was labor intensive and required care all year long. Immigrants were discouraged from settling in the South for this reason. There was no work for them and the work that was available required torturous labor. For this reason, South slave holders favored the labor of slaves over white workers. Unlike white workers, slaves could be forced to work under any condition and under any circumstances. White workers could not be owned, whereas enslaved Blacks could be. For this reason, the South continued to invest and protect slavery. Cotton was crucial to the economy of the South and the nation. By the mid 1800s, “55 percent of theSouth’s slaves worked on cotton plantations'' (White, Bay, Martin Jr. 175). Up to 75% of the cotton being produced in the world was coming from the South. Cotton also constituted half of the nation's exports. Cotton production, fueled by the labor of slaves, continued to shape the South and continue expanding slavery.

The Domestic Slave Trade 

The domestic slave trade was brought about after international slave trade was outlawed and slavery in the North came to an end. This caused Northern slave owners, and even Upper South slave owners, to look for ways to profit off their slaves even when they no longer needed them. This mostly meant either selling them to the Lower South or the slave owners decided to move to the Lower South, and they would forcibly bring along their slaves. The domestic slave trade was the selling of slaves from the North and Upper South to the Lower South. Slavery was essential to the Lower South and slaveholders in the Upper South could make more use of the money than they could their slaves. For this reason, they began selling their slaves to the Lower South, many times without ever telling the slaves themselves. They would often ([sell] slaves in secret to avoid giving them a chance to object” (White, Bay, Martin Jr. 181). From 1820 to 1860, over one million Blacks were forcibly moved from the Upper South to the Lower South in a mass migration. One-third of these people were taken with their slaveholders who were moving to the Lower South, the remaining two-thirds were resold, bought, and transported to the Lower South. This migration was beyond cruel and is known as the second middle passage because of this. Most of the time, slaves had to make the grueling journey on foot. The journey would be made in coffles, which could hold and contain up to three hundred people. The men were typically chained together, while the women and children followed behind or were carried in wagons. African Americans were forced to sleep outside during the migration. The impacts that this domestic slave trade had was that it completely broke apart families and friends. Being sold to the Lower South meant permanent separation from one's family without ever being able to say goodbye or have any form of contact. Also, once African Americans arrived at auction houses, they were treated as animals. They were inspected and touched by buyers. They were inspected for scars, which indicated if a slave was rebellious, illnesses, weaknesses, muscle mass, fertility in women, and their teeth, which would be telling of their age. Being sold to the Lower South was used as a way of threatening and controlling slaves by slave owners. The domestic slave trade kept slavery alive in the South.

Slave Rebellion and Black Unrest

Denmark Vesey who was originally named Telmarque was a former black slave who came from the West Indies and was relocated to Charleston, South Carolina in 1793. His owner employed him as a clerk and a domestic servant. Vesey was a highly skilled slave who knew both English and French, and was also able to read. Without a stroke of good luck, he would have remained a slave for the rest of his life but he purchased a lottery ticket and won $1500. He used the money to purchase his freedom and to start a carpentry business. Vesey socialized and identified with slaves and wanted to see them freed. Vesey began planning a rebellion, stealing guns and knives Turner and the other slaves planned to raid Charleston’s Meeting Street Arsenal to get weapons for their supporters who were expected to run into the thousands. (White, Bay, Martin Jr. 184). Before the rebellion can begin two Charleston slaves tell the plan to their owners. The authorities suppressed the uprising and hanged slaves, which included Vesey who was hanged publicly on July 2, 1822, with 5 other men. This was to show the slaves what would happen if anyone else tried to rebel. The whites also responded by having 150 guardsmen to patrol the city and arrest and whip any slave caught on the street after 9 p.m.

David Walker fled from Charleston after the plot but he kept Vesey’s memory alive to stop slavery and liberate the enslaved. He made a name for himself as “the most black abolitionist of his era.” Walker sheltered slaves in his home and contributed to Freedom’s Journal the nation’s first black newspaper which strongly opposed slavery. He also published an abolitionist manifesto, convinced that African Americans could not defeat slavery or racism without pleading their own cause. Walker’s Appeal was published in 1829 and made whites determined to suppress black voices. His pamphlet was very influential. “It galvanized a new generation of radical blacks who would lobby for abolition and civil rights. For whites, it shifted the focus of anti-slavery from colonization to emancipation.”(White, Bay, Martin Jr. 187) The response from whites was to offer a $3000 bounty for Walker’s death and a $10000 reward for anyone willing to kidnap Walker. Walker was found dead in the doorway of his home, but his influence persisted. 

 Nat Turner and other slaves lead one of the deadliest rebellions in American history. Born in 1800, Turner was a life-long resident of Southampton County, Virginia, at a time where both blacks and whites embraced Christianity. Turner said he experienced religious visions, which convinced him that “the great day of judgment” was soon. Turner waited for “signs in the heavens that it would make known to me when I should commence the great work.”(White, Bay, Martin Jr. 189)  He and some of his fellow slaves armed themselves with axes and hatchets and they murdered Turner’s owner, Joseph Travis, and his family. They stole their guns to continue their killing spree. The slaves and free blacks killed a total of 60 whites before a Virginia militia tracked them down two days later. Turner was caught after evading capture for three months and was executed. The whites went on an even greater killing spree, murdering 100 blacks who died without trial. Another 48 suspects were captured, tried, and executed by the state, including Turner. “Virginia’s leaders revised the state’s legal code to bar slaves and free blacks from preaching or even attending religious meeting without white supervision.”(White, Bay, Martin Jr. 189) “Virginia legislators also targeted free blacks with a colonization bill, which allocated new funding to remove them, deny blacks trial by jury, and made any free blacks convicted of a crime subject to sale and relocation.” (White, Bay, Martin Jr. 189)

The Amistad

The Amistad case occurred when in 1839, a group of Africans who had just been kidnapped and enslaved seized control of the Spanish slave ship Amistad in international waters near Cuba. The U.S. Navy captured the ship and made the rebels prisoners of the U.S. government, even when Spain demanded their slaves be returned. Since the matter violated treaties prohibiting the international slave trade, it had to be determined in court. It became a widely published abolitionist cause that reached the supreme court, where ultimately the rebels were freed in 1841. (White, Bay, Martin Jr. 190)

Many slaves participated in being disobedient to their owners in response to their treatment as slaves. Harriet Tubman fled her mistress in terror at age seven after stealing a lump of sugar. Miss Susan was a brutal mistress for whom Tubman worked as a nursemaid. She was merciless, and beat Tubman every day. The punishment for stealing was so severe for Tubman she hid in a pigpen. She was forced home due to hunger and fear of the adult pigs. Tubman would not be able to escape permanently until two decades later in 1849. Tubman was considered a truant. A truant is someone who would leave for days, weeks, or sometimes months to avoid punishment.

Harriet Jacobs was a female slave who ran away from her master Dr. James Norcom so he would no longer desire to keep her children as slaves. She knew her master only wanted to make her suffer so she got as far away as possible from him to keep her children safe. All her owner wanted to do was to psychologically manipulate her. Jacobs knew to avoid this she had to run away. Jacobs went to stay with her grandmother where her children would eventually find themselves after being released by Dr. Norcom. She had to stay in a cramped area with barely any light for years. She endured this for her children, to keep them safe. She watched as they played and she knew that it was not possible for her to be by their side but still she stayed resilient. Even though Jacobs was spotted by the neighbor and forced to flee, you still see the great lengths that female slaves in particular had to go to protect their children.

He admitted that he wanted to learn more about how digital currency works, which led him to his first decentralized asset purchase. He also added that at circa $3,000, bitcoin rates “looked better” to him that at $20,000 more than a year ago.

“I was tempted to purchase bitcoin when it was available for $200. But I held myself from purchasing something that I didn’t fully understand,” Faber told Cash.

The digital asset, for a brief time, maintained calm above $6,000 but poor fundamental dynamics created around November’s infamous Bitcoin Cash hard fork pushed the bitcoin price to its 18-month low. It has now located a new temporary bottom near $3,100 and, at the press time, it is priced at $3,867.

“In the last three months, bitcoin has surged 15 percent,” Faber noted.

Not a Bitcoin Bull

Faber warned that his followers should not presume his involvement in BTC as an endorsement. He stated that he remains unconvinced about the cryptocurrency. At the same time, Faber added that bitcoin could become “the standard for money transactions.”

Avid followers know Marc Faber as a cautious investor who tends to minimize investment risks. He is mostly known for predicting the 1987 stock market crash, also known as Black Monday. The accurate prediction earned him a lot of credits from his followers. He continued to be a central bank critic and blamed their monetary policies for every economic downturn.

Faber recommended his followers to remain cautious of bitcoin as an investment asset. He specifically addressed the young readers of his Gloom, Boom & Doom reports who, as Faber stated, encouraged him to purchase bitcoins.

“I would suggest to my followers that they invest such an amount in BTC that they can afford to lose,” said Faber. However, he didn’t reveal how many bitcoins he purchased.

Assets Outside Banking System

From an onlooker’s perspective, Faber’s entry into bitcoin is reminiscent of his earlier investment style. He admits that he purchases physical gold every month to protect his portfolio from the mainstream economy. He also believes that holding cash is stupid.

The formal boundaries for the City of Laurel encompass a land area of 4.42 sq. miles and a water area of 0.03 sq. miles. Prince George's County is in the Eastern time zone (GMT -5). The elevation is 167 feet.

While the primary coordinates for City of Laurel are located in Prince George's County, it should be noted that the formal boundaries for this community also extend into Anne Arundel County, and Howard County.

The City of Laurel (GNIS ID: 2390608) has a C1 Census Class Code which indicates an active incorporated place that does not serve as a county subdivision equivalent. It also has a Functional Status Code of "A" which identifies an active government providing primary general-purpose functions.

The incorporated City of Laurel is ONLY in Prince George's County, MD. So in other words, all of what is commonly thought of as Laurel is not part of the City of Laurel. However, all of what is Prince George's County Laurel is NOT the City of Laurel but all of what is the City of Laurel is in Prince George's County. None of what is in Montgomery County, Howard County or Anne Arundel County is part of the City of Laurel.

The total of “postal” Laurel is made up of four zip codes. Laurel 20723 is Howard County Laurel.

In the State of Maryland, political power comes from the State to the counties. Typical services like planning and zoning, police and fire protection, education, etc. are controlled by the counties. When a municipality is incorporated, varying degrees of this authority is ceded to the municipality. For instance, some municipalities, like Laurel (the City), have their own police, recreation and planning and zoning authority. Of course, the municipalities have taxing authority and this makes property taxes higher, in varying degrees, in incorporated municipalities than in unincorporated areas. The county property taxes are lower in areas where some of the services are provided by the municipality but the lower county taxes just don’t seem to compensate for the city taxes levied. I don't believe that any cities in Maryland (with the exception of Baltimore City which has the same political status as a county) have authority to levy sales, income or real estate transfer taxes. Also, with the exception of Baltimore City, ALL elementary and secondary education is under the control of the counties.

The real estate market in "Laurel" is quite diverse, as has been previously mentioned, and like anywhere, may vary with the price range of the property you are seeking and the specific area. This may also vary by how “quality of life” is perceived and measured. Of course, convenience to quality recreation, shopping and transportation play a part in this. Quality of education plays a great part to many. Since our educational systems are county based and controlled, the perceived quality of education may vary from one part of Laurel to another.

The market in our general area is a buyer’s market. This means that in many areas there is more than a six month supply of homes. This supply is measured by taking the total inventory of available homes and dividing it by the number of homes that sell in a month. If we measure affordability by monthly cost, here will probably never be a better time to buy a home. Monthly cost will increase and affordability will decrease if either or both factors of price of home and interest rate of mortgage loans go up. Laurel was formed from land on the fall line of the Patuxent River patented by the Snowden family in 1658 as part of the 12,250-acre New Birmingham plantation, which included the later Montpelier.The Washington Turnpike Road Company built Route 1 between 1796 and 1812, creating a major North-South land route. Milstead's Hotel halfway house was built in town to serve four stage lines a day in 1816.Nicholas Snowden built a grist mill on the site circa 1811 which grew to a small cotton mill by the 1820s.In 1828, a detailed survey was conducted to build a canal from Baltimore to Georgetown to connect to the proposed C&O canal.

 The route from Elkridge Landing to Bladensburg would have built a waterway roughly aligning with modern U.S. Route 1 and Kenilworth Avenue, with special consideration not to harm the water power for Savage Mill. The project did not go forward; the preference was to build a railroad, the B&O. Nicholas Snowden died in 1831, and the mill properties transferred to Louisa Snowden and her husband Horace Capon in 1834. In 1835, coinciding with the opening of the Capital Subdivision rail line from Baltimore to Washington, the Patuxent Manufacturing Company was chartered by Horace Capon, Edward Snowden, Theodore Jenkins, W.C. Shaw, A.E. Hall, and O.C. Tiffany and the mill expanded greatly with the addition of the Avondale Mill building in 1844.

 Mill president Horace Capron with his partners built housing for close to 300 workers, and a bigger cotton mill. Cotton duck from the mill was shipped down what would become Laurel's Main Street, then by rail to Baltimore.A substantial dam was built in 1850.As a mill town, Laurel was somewhat unusual in Prince George's County and was surrounded by agricultural endeavors.

The community was originally known as "Laurel Factory" when Edward Snowden became the first postmaster in 1837 and was a true company town, with a school and shops, and many of the mill workers' homes owned until the 1860s by the company. During the 1840s, three historic churches in the community—the Methodist Est. 1842, St. Mary of the Mills (Roman Catholic) Est. 1845 and St. Philip's (Episcopal) Est. 1839 —established what are still vigorous congregations. During the Civil War, Laurel Factory, like much of Maryland, was a divided community, but with many Southern sympathizers. Union soldiers patrolled the railroad, and for a time there was also a Union hospital. During the latter half of the 19th century, while it still operated its factories, manufacturing played a less important role in the community. Laurel evolved into an early suburban town. Many of its residents commuted by rail to jobs in Washington or Baltimore. The town was incorporated in 1870 and reincorporated in 1890 to coincide with a new electric power plant and paved streets and boarded sidewalks. By this time, the town had grown to a population of 2,080, and the city banned livestock from the streets.

In 1870, the Patuxent Bank of Laurel was founded on the corner of Main Street and Washington Avenue. In 1874 a delegation was sent to Annapolis to introduce legislation to make Laurel its own county of 10,000 residents with land from Prince George's, Howard, and Anne Arundel counties. In 1879 Laurel Academy of Music was built along Route 1. The building was converted to a movie theatre in 1915, with a parking garage on the lower floor of the wood structure; it burned in 1917, and Academy Ford built on the same site in the late 20th century. In 1888 inventor David J. Weems tested an unmanned electric train on a two-mile banked circular track near Laurel Station. The three-ton vehicle reached speeds of up to 120 mph for twenty minutes.

 At the turn of the century, Louis Barret operated a hotel called the "Half Way House", later called the Milstead Hotel, which served as a stop for the four stage lines operating between Baltimore and Washington. In 1898, a stable fire spread to the 100-year-old hotel and burned adjacent buildings along Main Street. With only bucket brigades, Mayor Phelps telegraphed Baltimore to send a special train with fireman, horses, and engine number 10. One fireman was crushed by the rolling fire engine, and returned in a casket saved from the burning mortuary. Once upon a time, there was a company named Wyze that made cheap security cameras and other various IoT products. As of today, Wyze cameras won’t detect people anymore. People detection, to be clear, is a major feature of Wyze cameras. The Wyze Cam is advertised as offering “custom zone detection and sensitivity settings,” and you automatically get a clip of what the camera captures while the full recording is saved in the cloud.

Yesterday, Apple bought the AI company Xnor.ai. In and of itself, that’s not particularly interesting, except for the impact it had on Wyze users. But firmware is now rolling out to Wyze devices that removes their ability to detect people. To be fair to Wyze, the company did warn users that the removal was happening back in November, via forum post and email, though some people will still be unpleasantly surprised.

Wyze has promised that the removal is temporary and that they will roll out a replacement this year. The company claims to have assembled its own AI engineering group, and promises that the functionality will remain free, even if it moves to cloud processing rather than using AI. It may even be possible to avoid losing the capability by refusing to update your firmware (some Wyze users speculated about this in the original comment thread). The company needs to deliver on what it’s promising, but it seems to be making the right moves.

But nothing Wyze is doing — nothing Wyze can do — changes the intrinsic absurdity of the situation. Users who purchased a camera for the purpose of person detection will no longer have access to this capability because Apple bought an AI company. It will be gone for the indefinite future. If you update your firmware (voluntarily or no), you may lose the very reason you bought the product in the first place.

The idea that all people have intrinsic property rights is pretty new compared with the scope of human history. You can date the beginnings of the idea to the Renaissance, but the debate really kicks off in 17th century England. It’s a complex topic that touches on everything from consumer freedom of choice to whether subscription models provide better economic value than purchasing physical products, which itself depends on how the product is used. It’s a discussion worth having, but it’s not what I’m here to talk about.

Modern IP Agreements, Contracts Aren’t Written for Humans

The disagreements between cable companies and content providers are a perfect example of how good customer outcomes are increasingly ignored. When the two sides fight, customers lose access to the shows in question, but are still generally expected to pay full price for a product they literally aren’t receiving. Last year, DirecTV and Comcast were both caught charging customers a Regional Sports Network fee despite not carrying content from a major RSN, Altitude Sports. Both companies had dropped Altitude two months earlier. Comcast had at least been offering refunds. DirecTV just kept on charging people. Can you break your contract with your cable company when you discover you’ve been charged for a product that was not provided? Generally speaking, no. ISPs, however, are allowed to charge you for an entire month’s service, even if you cancel halfway through the month. In other contexts, charging someone for services you then knowingly don’t provide is called fraud.

The smart home market is another area where this issue runs rampant. A number of companies have launched with hardware that’s fully capable of interoperation with other systems, only to deliberately junk their own equipment as part of going out of business. Planned obsolescence is itself obsolete, replaced by programmed obsolescence. Spectrum is the latest company to win this badge of honor for refusing to allow its Zigbee security cameras to communicate with Zigbee devices made by other companies. If anything keeps the smart home concept from taking off, it’ll be the way the industry is repeatedly burning its own early adopters.

One of the hallmarks of programmed obsolescence is that when it happens, humans often have no recourse. When Rockstar lost its license to the music in GTA IV, the company summarily yanked the affected songs right out of the game. There was no option to purchase them for your own personal use, even if you wanted to. Apparently, it wasn’t worth it to Rockstar to renegotiate the rights or the company was unable to do so. Neither explanation does anything for the people who bought the game and want the soundtrack it shipped with.

Imagine, for a moment, if this standard applied to movies. What if Hollywood studios or streaming services were required to pay royalties for every song in a movie for a given period? What would happen when those agreements inevitably expired? If that sounds crazy, I’d like to remind you that Hollywood literally patched an in-theater movie for the first time in history last December. Anybody want to hear the replacement tracks for Star Wars when the license with John Williams expires because Disney and his estate can’t come to an agreement circa 2050?

Similarly, did any human on Earth choose to continue doing business with Equifax after their 2017 data breach? Were we allowed to have a voice in whether this company was allowed to continue to exist? That’s not an unreasonable request given that we’re forced to do business with it.

What’s striking about many of these outcomes is how there’s no one to actually blame. Apple bought Xnor.ai, so Apple is well within its rights to terminate previous license agreements. Wyze can’t expect to continue to benefit from technology it hasn’t licensed. And finally: End users shouldn’t expect to retain permanent access to a technology Wyze provides, even if Wyze didn’t explicitly communicate to said users that they were only renting a feature they thought they were purchasing. If you accept the precepts, the conclusion is inevitable: Regular users get screwed to one degree or another and nobody cares.

We didn’t used to accept these precepts. Again, I’m not trying to bash Wyze here — the company is reacting to the facts as they exist on the ground today, and I’ll be the first to acknowledge that this specific situation is relatively small potatoes. The problem is, it’s not just one event or company. It’s everywhere.

If Intel or AMD were founded today, they’d be named Chiply. You’d sign up for a service that shipped you a CPU of your choice with a corresponding monthly fee and a hardwired 30-day validation requirement. Need to save money? No problem! Just agree to run a performance analyzer and to share your personal web traffic 24/7 so Chiply can gather useful data to improve future products. You can’t see what data the profiler collects and you aren’t allowed to know what Chiply does with it, and you’re certainly not going to get any information about which “trusted partners” Chiply sells it to shares it with, and you wouldn’t ever be told that those trusted partners are under no obligation to protect your data, and Chiply would never voluntarily admit that it actually ran the profiling application on everyone’s computer, whether you paid a monthly fee or not.

Take this sample size of 1 with a grain of salt, but it’s been 1 year since our construction and move were completed, and we’ve already increased revenues 100% year-over-year. The facelift, most assuredly, had a lot to do with that.

Sure, once this product flies off the shelves, you should recoup your investment, but you need a product to sell in the first place. And if you don’t have the cash on hand to make that investment – a small business loan can be just the blessing you need.

I was flabbergasted in discussing our first business loans with many bankers and they all told me we needed tens of thousands of dollars saved up in order to take out these loans.

“If I had the money, I wouldn’t be asking you for it.”

But, I learned in time that that’s not how the small business loan game works. Not only do you need the requisite 10-20% down (equity in your business akin to equity in your home mortgage), but also you need to show ample cash on hand to weather economic downtimes and to just pay the overhead for a while.

So save up until you have enough money on hand to be ‘attractive’ – then save some more.

2- Have an excellent credit score

We’re talking both personal and business credit here, and while we had some leniency on our business’ score, our personal ones were painstakingly examined.

On Thanksgiving dinner tables across America, chances are there’ll be platters of perfect, glistening garnet rounds, the ridges from the can still visible along their perfect, glistening garnet sides.

This is jellied cranberry sauce. It is an American tradition. Like so many American traditions, including Thanksgiving itself, its existence is controversial. It is a feat of engineering. It is a culinary wonder. It is an abomination, some say, slandering the cranberry’s good name.

It is also confusing, a substance that defies easy categorization. What is this gelatinous, artificially sweetened tube, jiggling out of the can, still can-shaped? And why, given its relative triviality — it is eaten a handful of times a year, at most, and costs less than $1.50 — does it inspire such strong feelings, uniting enemies and dividing friends?

No. Also yes. By any standard definition of the category, jellied cranberry sauce would not qualify as “sauce.” A sauce, according to What’s Cooking America, the nation’s “most trusted culinary resource since 1997” (according to itself), is a “liquid or semi-liquid [food] devised to make other foods look, smell, and taste better, and hence be more easily digested and more beneficial.” Wikipedia, my personal most trusted culinary resource, agrees that “sauces are not normally consumed by themselves,” and that a liquid component is essential.

Jellied cranberry sauce — that majestic, jiggling store-bought log — does not meet these criteria: Clearly, it is a solid. In fact, one of its primary features is that it does not bleed, unwanted, into other elements of a meal. This is because it is a solid, which, by crowdsourced definition, disqualifies it from true sauce-hood, while also differentiating it from its purer sibling: whole cranberry sauce.

Whole cranberry sauce is what you’d most likely make, were you to follow the recipe on the back of a bag of whole cranberries, though it can also be purchased in a can. Unlike the jiggling cranberry towers, the whole-berry version can be spooned out, sauce-like, over other elements of the meal. It is the whole-berry version that is “cranberry sauce.” The jellied cylinder qualifies as sauce only by relation, like a legacy applicant at Yale.

Yet it is beloved — not as a sauce, exactly, but as a food group of its own. Indeed, it is so different from the whole-berry version that many Thanksgiving hosts serve both, in two separate dishes, side by side. And deep down, they are not so different after all: Whole cranberry sauce indeed involves whole berries. Jellied cranberry sauce goes through much the same process, but it is heavily strained, removing elements of nature — skin, seeds — that would impede its perfect silken texture.

The history of cranberry sauce — in general, not jellied — goes back to indigenous people, who gathered the wild berries, using them for all sorts of things: textile dyes, medicines, cooking. According to the Washington Post, a report from the colonies, circa 1672, reported that “Indians and English use it much, boyling them with Sugar for a Sauce to eat with their Meat,” though it did not come into fashion as a turkey-specific accompaniment until more than 100 years later.

In Amelia Simmons’s 1796 tome, American Cookery, she suggests serving roast turkey with “boiled onions and cranberry sauce.” (As an alternative, the Post notes, she proposed pickled mangoes.) But it did not become a requirement of Thanksgiving dinners until General Ulysses S. Grant served it, alongside designated Thanksgiving turkey, to Union soldiers during the siege of Petersburg in 1864.

“That sort of solidifies its place as part of Thanksgiving nationally,” Kellyanne Dignan, director of global affairs for Ocean Spray, tells me. Cranberries themselves, she points out, only grow in five states, even now: Wisconsin grows the most, followed by Massachusetts, New Jersey, Oregon, and Washington state. (Also, British Columbia and Quebec.)

All of that is only context for what happened less than 50 years later: the introduction of canned jellied cranberry sauce, a testament to the possibilities of American ingenuity.

Cranberries are delicate fruits. They are “picky when it comes to growing conditions,” explains K. Annabelle Smith at Smithsonian.com. “Because they are traditionally grown in natural wetlands, they need a lot of water. During the long, cold winter months, they also require a period of dormancy which rules out any southern region of the US as an option for cranberry farming.” This reality put a cap on possibilities of the cranberry market: There are only so many cold-weather bogs to go around.

Then in the very early 1910s, Marcus Urann, a lawyer who abandoned his first career to buy a cranberry bog — and would go on to become one of the founders of what would become Ocean Spray — began canning the stuff as a way to sell the seasonal berry year-round. The cranberry harvest lasts six weeks, Robert Cox, a co-author of Massachusetts Cranberry Culture: A History from Bog to Table, told Smithsonian. “Before canning technology, the product had to be consumed immediately and the rest of the year there was almost no market.” Then suddenly, there was.

The jellied log became available nationwide in 1941. Thanksgiving history was forever changed. Ocean Spray, currently the world’s largest grower of cranberries, sells roughly 80 percent of its jellied sauce for the year Thanksgiving week. (There are also miniature peaks around Christmas, Easter, and the Super Bowl, thanks to a cult recipe for “Ultimate Party Meatballs.”)

Ocean Spray makes 70 million cans of jellied cranberry sauce, which Dignan observes amounts to one for every American family. It is wildly more popular than canned whole-berry sauce; three cans of jellied are sold for every one can of whole-berry. Every jellied can requires 220 cranberries.

“What’s interesting about cranberry sauce is that three-quarters of Americans use store-bought sauce for their Thanksgiving,” Dignan muses. “It really is the only thing on the table that the majority of people don’t just buy but want to buy.”

Making your own cranberry sauce is much easier than roasting your own turkey, or making your own stuffing, or baking your own pie. It is arguably even easier than throwing together your own salad, which is apparently how people celebrate, healthfully, on the West Coast. It takes 15 minutes, some sugar, and a saucepan. Yet it is our favorite thing to buy.

Nowhere is this is truer than in the southeastern United States, where they grow no cranberries at all. The biggest state for canned cranberry sauce consumption is Georgia, and while she cannot exactly explain this, it has, Dignan says, always been true.

In an age where processed food is in decline, one might imagine that canned cranberry sauce would be struggling. But according to Dignan, it is not. Seventy-six percent of people buy the stuff. “I wouldn’t say cranberry sauce is something that’s expanding in terms of our portfolio — we’re not seeing tons of year over year growth,” she says, but sales are “amazingly steady.”

“I think there’s a nostalgia to it,” she suggests. “There’s something about taking it out of the can and sort of that noise it makes and slicing it and it’s very uniquely American.” They don’t even sell canned cranberry sauce overseas, she says; they package it like a spread, in glass jars.

The appeal is in its timelessness. “There’s something about the fact that it hasn’t changed much. Even if someone doesn’t eat anything out of a can the whole rest of the year, I think, for some reason, cranberry sauce really speaks to them,” she says. She is not alone in her assessment of the non-sauce sauce’s appeal.

“How can you beat the tangy, sweet flavor of store-bought cranberry sauce,” said one taste tester at Bon Appétit. At Fortune, Clifton Leaf vigorously defended the “jiggly, wiggly mold of tartness.” The jellied slices, he wrote, go “down easy, like a slippery jam, potent with berry flavor and a whiff of history.”

Are there dissenters? Of course. As there should be. This is America. “The wobbly crimson substance added nothing to my Thanksgiving enjoyment, unlike my mother’s lemon-zested, multi-spiced version,” lamented Gwen Ihnat at the Takeout. “Once you take the time to make a fresh cranberry or lingonberry jam in its place, you’ll never go back,” Jim Stein, executive chef at McCrady’s, told Food & Wine, proposing instead a version with “fresh lingonberries cooked down in a little bit of sugar, cinnamon, star anise, and orange juice/zest.” (Dissenters love to zest.)

The answer was simple: for the Chinese population, and growing middle class, to keep spending vibrant and borrowing elevated, it had to feel comfortable and confident that its wealth would keep rising. However, unlike the US where the stock market is the ultimate barometer of the confidence boosting "wealth effect", in China it has always been about housing as three quarters of Chinese household assets are parked in real estate, compared to only 28% in the US, with the remainder invested financial assets. Beijing knows this, of course, which is why China periodically and consistently reflates its housing bubble, hoping that the popping of the bubble, which happened in late 2011 and again in 2014, will be a controlled, "smooth landing" process.  For now, Beijing has been successful in maintaining price stability at least according to official data, allowing the air out of the "Tier 1" home price bubble which peaked in early 2016, while preserving modest home price appreciation in secondary markets. How long China will be able to avoid a sharp price decline remains to be seen, but in the meantime another problem faces China's housing market: in addition to being the primary source of household net worth - and therefore stable and growing consumption - it has also been a key driver behind China's economic growth, with infrastructure spending and capital investment long among the biggest components of the country's goalseeked GDP. One result has been China's infamous ghost cities, built only for the sake of Keynesian spending to hit a predetermined GDP number that would make Beijing happy. Meanwhile, in the process of reflating the latest housing bubble, another dire byproduct of this artificial housing "market" has emerged: tens of millions of apartments and houses standing empty across the country. According to Bloomberg, soon-to-be-published research will show that roughly 22% of China’s urban housing stock is unoccupied, according to Professor Gan Li, who runs the main nationwide study. That amounts to more than 50 million empty homes. The reason for the massive empty inventory glut: to keep supply low and prices artificially elevated by taking out as much inventory off the market as possible. This, however, works both ways, and while it helps boost prices on the way up as the economy grow and speculators flood the housing market with easy money, the moment the trend flips the spike in supply as empty units are offloaded will lead to a panic liquidation of homes, resulting in what may be the biggest housing market crash ever observed, and putting the US home bubble of 2006 to shame. Indeed, as Bloomberg notes, the "nightmare scenario" for Chinese authorities is that owners of unoccupied dwellings rush to sell when cracks start appearing in the property market, causing a self-reinforcing downward price spiral. Worse, the latest data, from a survey in 2017, also suggests Beijing’s efforts to curb property speculation - which alongside shadow banking and the persistent threat of sudden bank runs (like the one discussed last week) is considered by Beijing a key threat to financial and social stability - have failed. "There’s no other single country with such a high vacancy rate,” said Gan, of Chengdu’s Southwestern University of Finance and Economics. “Should any crack emerge in the property market, the homes to be offloaded will hit China like a flood.” How did the Chinese researcher obtain this troubling number? To find the percentage of vacant housing, thousands of researchers spread out across 363 Chinese counties last year as part of the China Household Finance Survey, which Gan runs at the university. Gan said that the vacancy rate, which excludes homes yet to be sold by developers, was little changed from a 2013 reading of 22.4%. And while that study showed 49 million vacant homes, Gan puts the number now at "definitely more than 50 million units." Meanwhile, Beijing - which is fully aware of these stats, and is also aware that even a modest price decline could be magnified instantly as millions of "for sale" units hit the market at the same time - is worried. That's why Chinese authorities have imposed buying restrictions and limited credit availability, only to see money flooding into other areas. Rampant price gains also mean millions of people are shut out from the market, exacerbating inequality. In fact, China's president Xi famously said in October last year that "houses are built to be inhabited, not for speculation", and yet a quarter of China's housing is just that: empty, and only serves to amplify speculation. While holiday homes and the empty dwellings of migrants seeking work elsewhere account for some of the deserted properties, Gan found that investment purchases have been the biggest factor keeping the vacancy rate high. That’s despite curbs across the country meant to discourage buying of multiple dwellings.

There is another economic cost to this speculative frenzy: the drop in supply puts upward pressure on prices and crowds young buyers out of the market, according to Kaiji Chen, who co-authored a Fed paper called “The Great Housing Boom of China."  And, as Americans so fondly recall, the result of chasing unaffordable homes for the purpose of price speculation has resulted in yet another unprecedented debt bubble: according to Caixin, outstanding personal home mortgages in China have exploded sevenfold from 3 trillion yuan ($430 billion) in 2008 to 22.9 trillion yuan in 2017, according to PBOC data By the end of September, the value of outstanding home mortgages had surged another 18% Y/Y to a record 24.9 trillion yuan, resulting in a trend that as Caixin notes, has turned many people into what are called “mortgage slaves." It has also resulted in yet another housing bubble: home mortgage debt now makes up more than half of total household debt in China. As of the third quarter, it accounted for 53% of the 46.2 trillion yuan in outstanding household debt. For now, few are losing sleep over what will be the next massive housing bubble to burst. An example of a vacant home is a villa on the outskirts of Shanghai that 27-year-old Natalie Feng’s parents bought for her. The two-story residence was meant to be a weekend escape for the family of three. In reality, it’s empty most of the time, and Feng says it’s too much trouble to rent it out. "For every weekend we spend there, we need to drive for an hour first, and clean up for half a day," Feng said. She joked that she sometimes wishes her parents hadn’t bought it for her in the first place. That’s because any apartment she buys now would count as a second home, which means she’d have to make a bigger down payment. What is troubling is that despite relatively stable home prices, the foundations behind the housing market are cracking. As the WSJ recently reported, in early December, a group of homeowners stormed the sales office of their Shanghai complex, "Central Washington", whose developer, Shanghai Zhaoping Real Estate Development, was advertising new apartments at a fraction of the prices of the ones sold earlier in the year. One apartment owner said the new prices suggested the value of the apartment she bought from the developer in March had dropped by about 17.5%. “There are people who bought multiple homes who are now trying to sell one to pay off the mortgage on another,” said Ran Yunjie, a property agent. One of his clients bought an apartment last year for about $230,000. To find a buyer now, the client would have to drop the price by 60%, according to Ran. Meanwhile, in a truly concerning demonstration of what will happen when the bubble finally bursts, last month we reported that angry homeowners who paid full price for units at the Xinzhou Mansion residential project in Shangrao attacked the Country Garden sales office in eastern Jiangxi province last week, after finding out it had offered discounts to new buyers of up to 30%.

"People are so used to rising prices that it never occurred to them that they can fall too. We shouldn’t add to this illusion," Shao added, echoing Ben Bernanke circa 2005. But the biggest surprise once the music finally stops may be that - as a fascinating WSJ report revealed one year ago - China's housing downturn is likely far, far worse than meets the eye, as under Beijing’s direction more than 200 cities across China for the last three years have been buying surplus apartments from property developers and moving in families from condemned city blocks and nearby villages. China’s Housing Ministry, which is behind the purchases, said it plans to continue the program through 2020. The strategy, supported by central-government bank lending, has rescued housing developers and lifted the property market.

In other words, while China already has a record 50 million empty apartments, the real number - when excluding the government's own stealthy purchases of excess inventory - is likely significantly higher. It is this, and not China's stock market, that has long been the biggest time bomb for Beijing, and if Trump and Peter Navarro truly want to crush China in their ongoing trade war, they should focus on destabilizing the housing market: the Chinese stock market was, and remains just a distraction. So my friend and I were out driving his car and when he got out at a store, I hopped in the driver's seat. I have a class 5 license, so it's all legal there.
