BLACKOUT! - OIKAWA TOORU
summary, both you and tooru woke up in the middle of the night due to a blackout
Tumblr media
"GYAH!"
he squealed when he heard the sound of something falling on the floor. you clutched onto the back of his white t shirt. your heart rate increased as both of you and your husband walked further into the dark living room.
"walk faster, tooru!"
you groaned and smacked the back of his shoulder, making him grunt out an 'ow!' he pouts at you but you can't really see it due to how dark the apartment is at the moment.
"i'm trying! i can't see anything!"
he huffs out, stupid him he forgot his phone back in the bedroom. it was probably charging before this stupid black out happened. even if he did had his phone, it wouldn't be much help since the battery is dead.
a little while before...
when he moved to argentina for life, he knew he had to face a lot of things. mostly heat. though, he doesn't really mind a little bit of heat and sun exposure. he likes it, in fact. he likes how he looks hotter with tanned skin (self proclaimed).
but he didn't expect it to be this hot.
before he drifted to slumberland, his arms were wrapped around you, with your head on his chest. the proximity between you two was insane, but you both love it. he could've sworn he turned the AC on.
guess he was wrong when he woke up at exactly 3:45 AM with sweat forming on his forehead and all over his body at an insane amount. he furrows his eyebrows at the sudden heat, especially at night time. he fans himself with his white shirt that he practically wants to pry off right now.
he looks over to you to see you squirming in your sleep, changing sides every now and then. he could see that you were uncomfortable as well.
then, he figured that it was a blackout. he had that idea when he looked up to see the fan wasn't moving an inch as it should be. the AC had been turned off and the hallway lights that both of you usually leave on at night, is turned off.
he sighed and ran a hand through his hair. what a terrible time to be having a blackout.
soon, you woke up as well and sat up next to him. a yawn escapes your lips, as you bring a hand to rub your eye. he smiles at you. even in the dark, he manages to see your beautiful figure.
"morning, beautiful"
he said in a light tone, obviously teasing you. you hummed, your hair is a little messy.
"hm, why is it so hot?"
you asked and faced him. you can barely make out his face due to how dark it is. the only source of light you have is from the moonlight that shone through your balcony. though it was minimal.
"because of me possibly"
he jokes, to lighten up the mood. you rolled your eyes and smacked his bicep, making him chuckle.
"i'm being serious here, tooru"
he huffs and feigns offense.
"fine, i'm pretty sure it's a blackout. the power is out"
you hummed to his statement, fanning yourself with your hand.
"can't really sleep now with the temperature. what do we do?"
you asked to which he smirked.
"we could make out-"
"absolutely not"
you scoffed and he pouts, though it wasn't a bad idea, you don't think him bruising your lips with his own is appropriate to do in these moments.
"ugh, it's so hot. i wanna rip off my clothes right now"
"doesn't seem like a bad idea, you should try"
you don't need light to see that stupid flirty smirk and wink of his. you rolled your eyes at him.
"we're in a crisis and all you can think about is getting laid?"
he yawns as he nodded his head and leans against the bedframe.
"well, you're to blame for my thoughts"
you shook your head and before you can say anything to him, the sound of glass hitting the floor echoed throughout the apartment, making both your eyes widen.
he swears his heart rate increased and beated in an insane pace. his face starts to lose a little colour. oh god, he hates these kind of scary things.
the second that sound broke out, he clutches onto you for dear life. his arms wrapped tightly around your body as your cheeks squished against his chest.
"mmf- tooru! it's hot!"
"i can't let go! i'm scared!"
he squeaks and you huffed.
"it's probably nothing, calm down"
"oh yeah? i don't think 'nothing' can push off something until it breaks, darling"
you glared at him. seriously, it was amusing to see this buff and confident man getting all scared at what may possibly be something scary.
you were a little scared too, you weren't gonna lie.
"we should check it out"
"WHAT? are you insane!?"
you nodded to which he just whined at you. you pry off his hands off your body to get up from the bed, quickly searching for your phone.
"wait! you're not being serious, are you?"
he pouts when he sees you stood up next to the bed. you sighed when you couldn't find your phone.
"i am! i have to see what broke"
"and leave me here? alone!?"
he squeals when you scoffed at him and walk towards the door. he yelped and quickly escaped the bed to join you, his hand clutched on your arm.
"(y/n), baby, honey, as much as i love how crazy you can get and how hot you are when you do so, i don't think this is the right idea"
you huffed and grabbed his hand with your own.
"cmon, we'll go together, okay?"
"i'm too young to die! i wanna experience having kids, sending them off to college and beating that asshole ushiwaka-"
he rambles, as if he was going to die. you sighed. even at a time like this, he can be as dramatic as can be.
"it's nothing, i'm sure of that. i just need to see what broke and we'll get back in bed"
he pouts and gives up on changing your mind. as much as he wants nothing to do with this, he can't leave you alone. hell, he doesn't wanna be left alone.
which got you two in this position in the first place.
you clutched the back of his shirt, as both of you walked further into the living room.
"OW! i stepped on something sharp!"
he whined as he takes a step back to see the broken pieces. you sighed when you see the pieces of your favourite vase that your mother gifted.
"aww, i really love this one"
he hums and pats your back.
"at least we know what broke now. so, let's go back to bed, shall we?"
he says before grabbing your arm and leading you to the bedroom. before you could protest, a certain sound made you both freeze.
both of you let out a scream when something fuzzy ran through your legs. one of the screams being at the higher pitch, obviously tooru's.
"OH MY GOD! WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT!?"
he yelped and hugged you tight.
"i don't know!"
then a small 'meow' echoed.
and right then, the hallway lights turned on and so did the fan and the AC. a small cat made it's way to your leg, purring as it rubs its head against your calf.
he blanked out as he sees you patting the cat. how did that get here?
"aw, turns out it was this guy"
"what the- how did it get here?"
he pouted when he sees you paid attention to the purring feline. he clears his throat loudly, to get your attention.
"probably went inside when i was closing the door and hid off somewhere. it's so cute though"
he scoffs.
"yeah well, i'm cuter anyways. cmon! let's get back to bed!"
he whined and tugs on your nightdress. you rolled your eyes at him before taking the cat outside.
"you owe me consoling kisses by the way for making me go through such a horrendous experience"
you snickered before pressing a soft kiss on his lips, making him smile.
"okay, you big baby"

i don't know if you guys have been keeping up with the women's world cup but this past sunday spain won against england. and you would think this would be the best moment of their careers and their lives but you wanna know what happened?
the spanish football federation's president non-consensually kissed one of the players, jenni hermoso, on the mouth when they were celebrating. this grown ass man took it upon himself to ruin the celebration for ALL the women who just achieved the thing they have been preparing for all their lives, literally the peak of a football player's career, they did it and he by himself ruined it.
and i say all the women because the other players, along 58 currently inactive and ex-players, stood up for jenni hermoso and have refused to play for the team until luis rubiales publicly apologizes and renounces his spot. now the rfef says they'll take legal action against the players and jenni for lying and because they have an obligation to play for the team.
do you remember how the men's world cup celebrations went? i do, im from argentina. no one said anything to any of the players, they were treated like kings for months and they are worshipped to this day. and rightfully so! they earned it i guess. but we do see the discrepancy?
how is it that we allow as a society for one man to sexually assault a woman right after achieving the thing another group of men got ceaselessly venerated for not even a year later? what do women have to do to earn respect? win the world cup? become the pride and joy of their country?

Teaching Them Spanish 18+ Ft: Baji, Hakkai, Hanma, Rindou, and Ran WC:900 part 2 TW; Swearing in Spanish, humor (unedited) A/N: Hello babes! I decided to do something more on the fun side! Teaching some lucky men Spanish part 1! Please understand there are different dialects and meanings for some of the words used. This is what I grew up knowing and learning as a kid! For example, since I'm Mexican concha means shell in Spanish for me and I have a friend who is from Argentina concha means p**** in Spanish to her. Hope you enjoy! (@sashi-ya and I had a long convo about this lol)
Tumblr media
Hanma
From the start, it was a bad idea to teach him any bad words in Spanish. The man literally memorized every single word and used them on a daily basis. He would say it at the most random places as well. Getting an iced coffee at one of your favorite spots as your order was ready. Hanma grabbed both drinks “Thanks puto.” he spoke nonchalantly with a smile. You looked at your boyfriend squinting your eyes at him. The barista didn’t know what he said but just smiled and waved us goodbye.
“You cannot keep saying it like that!” you scolded him.
“Come on babe like they really know what puto means,” he smirked while taking a drink of his coffee, his hand draping around your shoulder. “Bet you anything if I say it to a random person right now they will not know what it means. Wanna see?”
“No-no I believe you.” letting a low chuckle out knowing how gutsy he already was. “I wish you picked up on the sweet things I taught you rather than the bad ones.”
Even though he loved saying the bad words he did learn the phrase just for you  “Eres el amor de mi vida (You are the love of my life),” The way he rolled his r’s so perfectly made your heart drop the scarlet color dusting your cheeks.
Baji
“Leave them alone pinche baboso!” Hearing your long-haired boyfriend's voice raise louder. It startled you a bit to hear the aggressive tone he used.  A person who seemed to not get the hint to leave you. They seemed to finally get the hint and walk off. His eyes followed the person until they were out of his sight letting out an annoyed sigh. His hand was still holding onto yours.
Your other hand begins to rub his forearm. “you okay??” Looking up at him.
He looked down at you as his stern look lessened “Yeah…” he noticed the smile on your face “What? Why are you looking at me like that?”
“We need to practice your pronunciation a bit more. But you used the terms correctly.” You spoke chirpily
Raising his brow  “stop acting like a teacher! I said it perfectly.”
“You had the sas which was great but Pinche we need to work on you have to let it come down deeeeep from your soul when you say it.” You said smiling. Letting go of your hand he began to walk off “Babe wait!” You took off chasing him.
Hakkai
He wanted to learn for you. Bless his soul it took him son to ask you. Every day like a clock work you sat down with him. He didn’t know how to even have the words come out of his mouth. The phrase was very simple to say.  “Don’t be shy babe.” both of your hands were resting on your cheeks giving him a sweet smile.
‘They cannot look at me this cute and ask me to do this.’ he thought to himself. The blush dusted his cheeks. “I-I can’t.” his hands began to rub his face Reaching for his hands bringing them down from his face. “You got this, don't second guess yourself.” sweetly speaking to him. Swallowing the hard lump in the back of his throat “¿Me regalas un beso? (can you give me a kiss?)”
“Sí” leaning over pressing your lips lightly against trembling lips. “You wanna learn another one?” you looked at him, he was still a bit shocked. You think you might have made your boyfriend pass out with his eyes open.
Rindou
“I would use this phrase a lot.” He looked at you “teach me it.” “I told you I didn’t wanna teach you the bad words. And all I’ve been teaching you is the bad phrases.” you pouted. Rin was so persistent in learning the phrases he wanted to know... You wanted to teach him Spanish but each time he asked it was the bad ones.
“Come on, just let me know what it is, can't you see I want to learn.” Rin’s violet eyes looking at you.
Being the sucker you are just the simple look at you with his violet eyes you couldn’t help but give into him “que chingados( what the fuck)” crossing your arms and sighing. “que chingados.” he repeated it a few times, getting the feel and the tone he should use with it.
“Okay stop saying it, you don’t need to say it right now.”
“¿Por qué?” he smirked.
Ran
“Mi Amor~~~” Ran loved the phrases he was a natural at learning the new language. Literally felt like you were dating a telenovela actor. It all started when you were actually watching a telenovela. He wanted to know what was going on and he didn’t want to read the subtitles. You were putty in his hands, his hands wrapping around your waist.  Your hands resting against his chest. “Sí mi Rey~~(yes my king)”  you cooed. He loved hearing you speak to him in Spanish. “God I love how you say that. Me gusta mucho (i like it a lot)”
“ I know you do. Are you ready to watch the rest of the show?” asking him,  your fingers running through his hair.
“ I was thinking about having our own little romantico moment right now.” looking at your lips then back at your eyes the corner of his lip slightly curled up.
“If yall going to act like cochinos close the door.” Rin  was walking past the open door.

19th October
Buenos Aires, Argentina
Taehyung watched Jimin return to their hide-out with evident disappointment settled across his face. Another indicator being the deep sigh which followed right as he closed the door behind himself.
He perked a suspicious eyebrow at Jimin, exchanging a glance with Yoongi then who was sitting across from him and sharpening his sword. "What happened?"
Jimin plopped next to him, sulking deeply. "Guess Bella won't help us out."
"I'll pretend being shocked," Yoongi snickered under his breath, only earning an annoyed glance from the younger one before he fell back into sulking.
Taehyung only rolled his eyes out of Jimin's sight and cleared his throat then. Trying to set the right tone to cover the fact he wholeheartedly agreed with Yoongi's sarcastic stance.
Why would Arabella Valentine help them out if it didn't benefit her?
That wasn't her style.
"Did she say why?"
"Yeah.." Jimin shifted in his seat, running his fingers through his light brown hair, "She prefers going after a rich heir in Cyprus." Mild jealously flickered through his features and Taehyung could tell but chose not to mention.
"Seriously, why are you so whipped for this woman?" he eventually wondered out, "She's manipulative and you can't trust her. I don't get it."
"Plus, she's screwed us over countless times.." Yoongi added with a mumble. Both now looking at him expectedly.
Pursing his plum lips, the thief in question fumbled with his fingers for the right words. "Well, first of all sh-"
"Don't you dare say 'she's hot'," Taehyung quickly countered, shooting him a serious glare to which Jimin only chuckled bashfully.
"Well, she is, but that isn't the main reason.."
The anew sigh leaving his lips filled with awe and admiration this time, gaze wandering out the window into the sunlit capital of Argentina. A dreamy look on his eyes with possible hearts if he was a cartoon character, Taehyung was sure.
"You guys wouldn't get it.. I like that she's so sneaky and always keeps me on my toes. She's dangerous and mesmerising. She's.. she's simply one of a kind," he eventually settled.
And perhaps they really didn't get it because all they were able to see in her was a competitor, another thief who might occasionally help them out. But only for a price - which was usually betraying them with all the loot.
"It's kinda cute though. He's the literal definition of fool in love," Yoongi plainly stated then, trying keeping a straight face although they could see the ghost of a smile on his lips. His tease pulling Jimin out of his little daydream.
"Anyway," the master thief said then, dismissing his older friend's comment, "That means we need someone else to get us in there."
"We don't know any other female professionals though."
"At least, not personally."
All three fell into deep thoughts.
This wasn't good. They needed a woman to pull off this coup. Only women were invited to the embassandor's gala as it was specifically to celebrate female achievements. It was their only chance to get in the embassy.
- Well, not the only one, but surely the easiest one. Two would sneak in as staff members and the third one had to be among the guests. To keep an eye on the embassandor and the ball hall while the other two were breaking into the office room. And to be one of the guests he'd need to be the cavalier of a lady.
"The party's in a week, we need to come up with something. We're running out of time."
"Why did you only ask her now, if we knew beforehand-"
"I was sure Bella would be in.."
The oldest one shrugged, putting his katana aside. "Maybe we should just cancel it and instead go for a different coup."
At this, Jimin shot Yoongi an irritated glare before laughing out. "You're giving up too easily! I'm sure we'll fi-" Pausing himself mid-sentence, he faced Taehyung then who gulped at the mischieviously wide grin on his lips. "Say, what about your doctor fri-"
Before he could even complete, Taehyung already cut him off with a harsh glare. "No, forget it."
Jimin whined. "Why?"
Dumbfounded at the new level of idiocy his best friend had reached, the gunman exhaled with a huff. "Are you seriously asking? She's a civilist. I'm not getting her involved in this and besides, I doubt she even got time."
"How do you know, you haven't asked her?"
"She's an assistant physician in her second year, she's just working non-stop."
"Then a reason more for her to get out of the daily grid!" Jimin exclaimed, thrilled about his brilliant idea, "And didn't you say she's always curious about our work and finds it exciting? Yes, just imagine how thankful she'd be!"
Taehyung, however, was less and less inclined to the nonsense idea of getting Cassandra involved in this. He always tried his best to keep their friendship seperated from the rest of his life - or at least as seperate as possible. And he grew frustrated with Jimin's irrational enthusiasm.
"You can't be serious, this is way too dangerous for an outsider. What if something goes wrong?"
"Taehyung's right," Yoongi, who had been silently listening to their argument, eventually intervened, "She's completely unexperienced. We can't effort it."
"Guys, you're such naysayers!" Jimin groaned then, throwing his hands dramatically in the air, "This coup we'll be like walking into a candyshop, nice and easy. She won't need to do anything but look pretty and mingle with the other guests. That's it. She won't be anywhere near the action where we -" His finger wiggled between himself and Yoongi. "- would be."
"Wait, you and Yoongi are breaking in?"
He smirked. "Of course, since she's your friend you're gonna be her escort."
Taehyung became pale, all colour drained from his face. He and Cassandra in fancy attire in the middle of a ballroom? The thought making him swallow with an irrational flush colourings his cheeks.
"I mean.. putting it like this.." Yoongi mused with a small smile, earning a side-eye from Taehyung.
"You're seriously changing your mind on me now?"
The swordsman shrugged, sliding his katana back into its shealth as he had finished the sharpening, being content with his work. "I didn't think about the fact that she'd indeed not be directly involved in the heist. Her only role would be to get the third one - you - inside. That's it."
"Unbelievable," Taehyung dragged out a breath, shaking his head.
He didn't like admitting it, but they had a point. Still a pretty dumb point, in his opinion, but nevertheless, a point. If they wanted to go through with the plan, the young physician was their only option in the moment. At least until he could come up with a better one. And he would try his best to do so.
"You guys really mean it, huh?"
"Look, Tae, I get it," Jimin said then, grabbing his shoulder with a sympathetic smile, "It's not like I'm keen about getting an outsider involved either, but she's our only option right now. And I wouldn't suggest it if I believed she could get in actual danger. You know me, I'd never endanger anyone on purpose. Especially not a pretty woman."
Of course Taehyung knew that. He knew Jimin for half of his life by now, he knew he wasn't reckless or mindless towards others. Only towards himself. And his look of appeal made Taehyung eventually sigh in defeat, nodding.
"Maybe she won't agree anyway," Yoongi argued then with raised brows. Partially in an attempt to calm Taehyung's mind. "What then?"
But Taehyung could only laugh out dryly at this. Already knowing her answer.

21st October
Barcelona, Spain
Cassandra's eyes widened while alternating between Jimin, Yoongi and Taehyung, the latter one standing in the background with crossed arms and an annoyed scowl.
"Me?" She pointed at herself, still processing and not believing their surreal proposal.
When she had left the hospital after an early shift, the only thing she'd expected to find at home was her left-over food and the rest of a tv show which had been left in the middle - wishing her hospital life would've been just half as entertaining as in the show.
She hadn't expected, however, to find Taehyung and his friends waiting for her in front of her entrance door.
Now thinking about it, considering they were thieves and could break into anything they wanted, it was quite nice of them respecting her enough not to break into her apartment and instead wait outside.
"Cassandra, Cas," Jimin sighed in pity ploy, engulfing her hands in both of his. Taehyung only rolling his eyes in the back at the sight of his friend working his usual charms. "We wouldn't ask you if we weren't desperate. I swear, we wouldn't let you get in any danger. You just need to enter from the main entrance, have a good time at the gala and then leave again from the main entrance. That's all."
She blinked again, feeling her heart-beat picking up in excitement.
Was she even allowed to get excited? Shouldn't she be panicked and call them crazy?
She should, but for some insane reason she wasn't. She was indeed considering this.
"Just for the record, I was against this idea," Taehyung barked in, "Seriously, feel free to say no."
"Don't influence her!" Jimin's head snapped back. Making Taehyung scoff and look away again.
Cassandra took a moment to think about it. Although she was certain her answer was already set, she still tried staying objective and weighing out all factors.
"If I do it.. you'll keep me safe, right?" She timidly peeked up, seeing a smile spreading on Jimin's features.
"Of course! Well, not me directly.." His head returning to Taehyung with a smirk, "But Taehyunghie will. Considering he's unrivaled with his gun and good in combat, you'll be in good hands."
She smiled, knowing all that very well.
Her brown irises wandering to her friend who was about to protest again, but instead folded his lips when meeting her warm stare.
He already knew her answer anyway. That was why he was so against it in the first place. She might've not been naive enough to mistake her films for reality, but the way Jimin set it, it sounded exciting and risk free. Besides, she was someone who always helped others and only a blind person wouldn't see how much in need they were of her right now. Jimin had practically thrown himself to her feet after all.
So he sighed, giving her an affirming nod. "I'll protect you, Cas."
She smiled gently. "I know."
If she didn't trust Taehyung, she wouldn't have even considered it.
Content with his sincere answer, she faced Jimin again. "I'll do it."
"Great!" he cheered and jumped onto his feet, pulling her with him before engulfing her into a tight hug. Making Cassandra laugh out as she hugged him back startled.
They must've been indeed quite desperate, she concluded.
"Y-you said it's next friday though. And where?"
"In Budepast at the French embassy," Yoongi, who hadn't tried persuading nor hindering her from participating, but instead had stayed pretty neutral next to Taehyung, said.
He'd been taking a look around her apartment instead. Small eyes growing round when seeing the film posters Taehyung had mentioned to them.
"You can travel around Europe freely, right?"
She hummed in affirmation.
She had always wanted to see Budapest anyway so that wouldn't be an inconvenience. However, she recalled her schedule.
"I'll need to pull in some favours and switch shifts then.."
Taehyung instantly straightened at this. "If that'll be a problem, we're gonna look for someo-"
"No, no, I'll do it. Don't worry," she giggled, seeing him shut his mouth and going back to sulking.
In all honestly, she felt quite flattered by his concerns. But she trusted their word that it wouldn't get dangerous for her.
And a fancy gala at an embassy? Who would say no to that? It'd be the first time she ever attended something like this.
Her smile dropped at this realisation. Now, this was actually concerning.
"It's gonna be so fancy.. " she mumbled. Chewing on her lips.
She didn't have any fancy clothes. Of course not, why would she? She had a few good clothes for special occasions and celebrations, but in no way would they be enough for an embassador's gala. She'd need to buy something, but did she even have money for a suitable dress for such an event?
She started mildly hyperventilating.
"Hey, hey, don't worry. Just wear a nice dress. It doesn't have to be some expensive designer piece, no one will tell," Jimin ensured her, patting her shoulder with a cheerful smile, "It's not the Milan fashion show. The people at the gala won't be able to tell the difference."
"Okay," she nodded when another question popped up in her mind. "But how will I even be allowed to enter? I don't have an invitation after all.."
At this the three thieves only exchanged a glance before their lips tucked into cheeky grins.
"Please, that's a piece of cake. Don't let that trouble you." Jimin winked.

26th October
Budapest, Hungary
It was 8 o'clock on the dot when Cassandra stepped out of the elevator that evening. It'd been awhile since she'd spent a night at a hotel and it felt odd.
The only good thing was that it was a rather small vintage one, meaning no cameras inside and not many guests as she made her way out of the old but well-preserved building. The reception at the foyer was currently empty, facilitating her departure. And she remembered to turn her face away from the camera at the entrace. Just like the guys' had instructed her. It was one out of only two, the other one being at the back entrance that led to the backyard.
Even if it wasn't their main intention to save her from embarrassment when choosing that hotel for her - the practical reasons being it not having much security and its suitable location - it saved her from nosey people wondering where she was heading to in such a fancy look. She had already felt insure enough, not being used to wearing anything but scrubs or normal clothes. She didn't need employees or guests' talking while walking around in a floor-long dress, heaving the fabric with her fists not to step onto it.
Cassandra knew there was no going back now that she had already exited the building. And she wondered if Taehyung would be there as settled.
The last contact had been back in Barcelona, when they'd given her location and pick-up time, keeping the risk of leaving traces as small as possible.
For all people knew, she was a mere tourist. Which she was, in a way. At least she'd passed the past two days by wandering around the city to all the touristy spots, making the most out of her trip there and acting unsuspicious.
Much to her relief she spotted Taehyung waiting at the end of the street. He was leaned against a black limousine with tinted windows, not having noticed her yet as he was too preoccupied with texting the others on a burner phone to see the startled expression on Cassandra's made-up eyes.
His dark brown hair was combed back with the side parted, except for a rebellish curl that was falling on his forehead while he was hunching. The black tuxedo he wore perfectly underlining his tall and sturdy stature. Its suit jacket left unbuttoned and hanging losely over the black dress shirt he was wearing underneath it, adorned by an equally pitch-black neck tie.
Describing his appearance as 'handsome' felt like the understatement of the year. She needed a stronger word than that to express her exact thoughts in that moment.
Of course she always thought of him as a good-looking guy with an enchanting smile, from the very first glance she'd laid on him. She wasn't blind after all. However, seeing him in such a fancy attire for the first time left her breathless. Just like that very night many years ago when their eyes had met for the first time.
Usually she only saw him in casual fits. Loose shirts, wide trousers or big hoodies. Like a normal guy. However, she'd use anything but 'normal' for him right now.
Taehyung looked like straight out of a runway or no - a film! A spy movie!
Like a real-life James Bond.
And that realisation made a hot rush run through Cassandra's veins.
She inhaled sharply, about to move when his head perked up as if he had heard her screaming thoughts and their irises met. Both staring at each other, perplexed.
His lips parted, unintentionally allowing his eyes to wander over her dress all the way down and then up again.
Cassandra was standing there, a vision in dark vibrant green. Embroidered leaves and flowers covering her torso, flowing from her waist sporadically down the tulle fabric. Glistening faintly under the streetlamps, like an emerald. Contrasting her silky-shining coppery curls cascading over her shoulders.
First he hadn't been sure if it was really her or a mythological forest nymph, having lost her way to the magic world and instead found her way there to him.
But soon he realised that it was indeed Cassandra. And that he was holding his breath.
"Hey, cool guy," she eventually breathed out. Interrupting their little staring contest.
He swallowed, forcing his lips to move into a casual smile. "Hey, Doc."
With uncertain steps, she walked up to him and he pushed himself off the car. Holding the passenger door open for her.
"You.. you look.." He was flustered, to say the least. His mind on overdrive as he tried not to turn awkward, but he feared he was doing just that by stuttering and blushing. She looked even more stunning from up-close. Finally, he managed clearing his throat. "You might get a cold."
With a small laugh, she looked away and folded her arms in front of her décoleté. It was warm enough during the day, but now that the sun was setting, a coolish breeze was indeed picking up which the thin straps of her dress surely wouldn't shield her from. Especially not as her back was completely open, aside from the straps crossing and forming a bow on its lower half - which had taken her a solid ten minutes to tie on her own.
Taehyung catching that detail as well, looking away shyly. And Cassandra's insecurity only grew, misinterpreting his behaviour.
She started seriously regretting all her choices in this moment. Back then she'd thought that if this was her only chance to wear a beautiful long dress, then so be it!.
- Why didn't she go for a simplier dress? Preferably in an ordinary colour like black or creme with long sleeves and maybe even a turtleneck, if dresses with turtlenecks even existed.
She feared making a fool of herself again.
"Uhm, no it's okay. I'll survive, don't worry. I didn't have anything suitable to wear on top and didn't want to show up in a random jacket.." she mumbled. About to enter the car when she felt something being slid over her shoulders, causing her to still. And she saw his suit jacket laying on them.
Her lips parted, her cheeks chrimson red by now. She held the collar together with one hand.
"Thank you," she quietly said, seeing him only offering her a quick nod before they bothed entered the parked limousine.
The French embassy was in the city centre, close to Danube's bank. An upmarket part with lots of cultural sights. Meaning the traffic would keep them from arriving there fast.
They remained silent for most of the drive, both unusually tense. Only stealing glances at the other when thinking they wouldn't notice.
"We can still turn back. I can return you to the hotel," Taehyung offered, glancing at her hopefully before redirecting his focus onto the road in front of them.
They were almost there, he could already spot the long line of expensive vehicles lining up to enter or depose guests.
"Again, don't feel obligated. You don't have to do this. I'll find another way to get in."
The young woman shook her head though, the grip she had onto his blazer to keep it from sliding off, tightening.
"No, I'm okay." And she was. Slightly nervous, yes, but also incredibly excited. "And besides, I got my lucky charm."
His brows knitted at her, seeing a toothy grin on her features and a small teddy bear dangling from her fingers next to it.
"Isn't it cute?"
He couldn't help but chuckle. Somehow he wasn't surprised she was  into superstition or at least lucky charms. And her beaming face was  adorable.
"Very cute actually."
"I know it's ridiculous," she sighed then with a coy smile as she looked down to the teddy bear in her folded hands, "And I don't really believe in superstition. But I figured, it wouldn't harm."
Shaking his head, he tugged at the golden necklace underneath his collar. "What do you think this is?"
Her eyes widened. "So it's also your lucky charm?"
He shrugged. "So far I always had luck, so it could be this. I always wear it after all." He tucked it back in as memories surged his mind. He tilted his head at her with a smirk then. "So it must bring me some luck. Don't you think?"
Cassandra smiled at him with a fond look, knowing how much it meant to him. And it was nice catching a new glimpse of his life from behind the curtains of his usual secrecy. She enjoyed collecting all those pieces of random information about him.
"By the way," she said then, stuffing the small stuffed animal back into her purse, "I got your postcard a few days ago. The one from New Delhi."
"Huh, you only got it now?" he huffed with a raised brow, "I was there a month ago."
"Well, it's quite far away, on the other side of the globe.. Was it fun there?"
"Curious as always.." He grinned, amusement in his eyes as he peeked at her. "But yeah, it was. Also far too warm though."
Cassandra giggled at his whining, remembering he didn't do well in temperatures over 25°C. Would explain why he was walking around with a thin coat in winter.
"Maybe next time don't do a heist in a hot subcontinent."
"It wasn't a heist," he plainly stated. Knowing far too well that would only intrigue her more. And indeed, she leaned over with curious eyes. Her eye make-up intenser now for the gala than her usual one, making her doe eyes appearing even bigger than usual. "No? What else did you do there?"
He simply shrugged with a cocky smirk, remaining quiet which he knew would drive her mad.
"Don't be so annonying," she groaned and puffed her cheeks in a childish manner, "You mentioned it, now you gotta tell me."
"Oh, do I?"
"Of course."
"Let's say we were on a little treasure hunt."
Her eyes grew even rounder. "Treasure hunt? Like Indiana Jones or something?"
"Or something."
And he bit back a laugh when hearing her scofd.
Taehyung entered an side-street behind the embassy then, deciding it'd be better to park there for an easier escape later.
He unbuckled his seatbelt then and got out. Walking around to help her out of the car by offering her his angled arm, which Cassandra gladly accepted by hooking hers around his elbow. Making their way towards the embassy.
Another uncommon thing for her, stilettos. She usually didn't wear anything that was higher than two centimetres and even then it was usually boots or sneakers. She just hoped her walk wasn't as wobbly as her legs felt in that moment.
It only now really downed to her that this was really happening and anxiety made a surprise appearance after all.
"Remember what I told you? About the cameras?"
She nodded at his question, recalling his and the guys' little prep talk. She'd taken notes. "One left at the gate, two left in the courtyard, one right at the entrance and one over the staircase. And another two in the ballroom, at the side of the stage."
His lips tucked into a lopsided smile. He was impressed. "Good girl."
The praise caused Cassandra's lips to press together, feeling her cheecks blushing along. She never knew words of affirmation could've such an affect on her.
However, she also felt quite proud of herself. She'd done her best to memorise everything after all, not wanting to screw it up.
She had to turn her head away from them in case something went wrong and Jimin wasn't able to loop the security footage. It was a worst case scenario, but they had to be prepared for everything. And Taehyung surely didn't want risking her getting recognised on any footage.
Turning a corner, the embassy's aristocratic building came into full focus then. It was in a long row building which covered the whole block. Tall, rounded glass windows on the ground level, above them a terrace on the first level. The entrace was two tall rounded gates adorned with ornatements of metal. Between the two gates, a plaque that said 'Francia Köztársaság Nagykövetsége'.
- Overall, it looked indeed like a building where only the french would have their embassy in.
Taehyung pressed his in-ear monitor then to activate it. "Guys, we're about to enter."
"Cameras all set," Jimin answered from inside the building, "Have fun!" And Taehyung could hear the smirk in his friend's voice. Mumbling a quick 'thanks' before turning to Cassandra, catching her staring at the building with the line of well-dressed important people behind security guards.
Her steps slowed until she caused them both to stop, Taehyung giving her a questioning glance. "Just say the word and I'm driving you back," he whispered as he covered her hand that was wrapped around his arm. Giving her a soothing smile, only earning a wary one from her.
"I.. I just feel a little silly in this outfit, you know? I'm not used to anything but my normal clothes and.. I'm afraid I'm not fitting in. People might already be staring at me." She was looking around as paranoia briefly took over her while they passed by the iron gates. Perhaps she was only searching for excuses.
Her words made him frown as he also looked around, not noticing anyone looking funny at her. And he should, if it was the case, he was trained in observing people.
"Cas, calm down. You don't look out of place at all, you look.." His voice suddenly got caught in his throat as she her glance returned to him, looking expectantly at him. And the way the streetlights gleamed in her chestnut-coloured eyes made his mind blank out for a moment. He stuttered. "You look.. fitting."
Cassandra arched a brow at him, cocking her head. "Fitting?" She giggled, dumbfounded. It was so random, it genuinely distracted her from her worries. "Thanks, I take that."
She took out the invitation and the fake ID Jimin had sent her way then. And Taehyung was astonished how naturally she looked while passing both to the security guard. If she was nervous - which he knew she must've been - he couldn't tell. The guards passed her the documents back and they entered. Going through the metal detectors and towards the corridor to the courtyard then.
The courtyard wasn't too big, or at least the numerous people in their gowns and tuxedos made it appear smaller. The building's facade was just as cream white there as outside from the street. A big french flag lazily waving in the night air over one of the side entrances, which was covered by a curved construction out of glass with everyone lining up in front to enter.
Cassandra put on a serious face again and closed her eyes. Taking in a deep breath. "I'm better than everyone else. I'm better than everyone else. I'm -"
"What?" His brows furrowed in confusion at her weird mantra.
"Getting mentally into my role. Can't look like a misfit among all those snobby people," she explained with a grin and Taehyung let out a genuine laugh.
This woman surely was full of surprised.
He nodded in approval before tucking her towards the entrance.
"Smart. Come, let's go inside."

Ok, I'm entering my villain (& heroes!) arch aajshashasa. This stupid fixation of superpowers and fiction comic stories.
WELL, HOT TAKE OF THE DAY:
The majority of superpowers in fiction and oc's are boring because they're straightforward. Picture it, there's aaaaaaaaaaaaaaalways someone with the power of:
Mimic someone's power
Invisivility
Steel skin
Puppeteer or any variation of body and mind manipulation (because *wink wink* we're all edgys and saw creepypastas a lot hashas)
Perhaps fly
Ultra speed
And shit like that ajshashasa. Don't get me wrong, those are amazing superpowers. Even just one person in a normal-esque world is a fucking anomaly and represents a game changer.
HOWEVER it's quite boring and honestly quite lazy. Because oh yes! The evil twisted villain of the wee has the power of... mind control. OH BOY! I fucking wonder what is gonna happen! (sacarsm). Or shadow control powers or super force and you know the rest. WHAT a twist! (/s).
And the same goes for the heroes that GOD forbid they're not teenagers or young adults in well shaped bodies BECAUSE UUUUUUFFFFFFFFFF. Call me crazy but if you can fly I doubt you're using at all your muscles the same way a common person does ahshasa. But why fucking not, we can never have enough twinks and women in spandex, can we? ahshahsa.
There's no twist and creative work in a superheroe or a villain or whatever that has JUST that exact power that conveniently works.
I'm a slut for the characters with random and incoherent powers!
That's where this shit goes hard. Beacuse it's so easy to be a superhero whn you can walk through walls or move at high speed. But what happens when you have the power to deconstruct objetcs? Fly just 50 cm off the groud? Exact knowledge of the pupulation in Taiwan (while you live in Argentina)?
What happens to them??? I wanna see the shenanigans, the creative solutions to abnormal problems! And what happens to the powers that become a burden or that straight up are incompatible with the common society. What happens if you're born without bones? If TV signals sometimes cross without way to evade it into your mind?
I wanna see creative villains. With powers like super healing and bubblegum madness. Concidental induction and urbomancy. Hhahshahsas
The thing is not actually that the pwoers are common or simple, the thing is for me that the weaponization in battle is the number one thought. Like, yeah, I bet turning sound waves into lethal blades is powerful but out of battle, does it matter? It means somethig? Can you cut a frozen pizza for dinner or you destroy your whole kitchen?
(Tbf, a story a bout a character struggling to see beyond his powers shapped to battle could be interesting BUT that's another story ahsahsas).
And I'm also bored of the god-like powers. You can fly and you can control minds! For free I guess and with no real consequences. Bceause let's be serious, Spidermand and Superman as archetypes of the hero had their own limitation (not precisely linked to their powers by themselves BUT WHATEVER). They're more or less the exception to this.
I Wanna See Limits
LIMITS. I care 0 if the character can eat the fucking Sun. What I want to see is that power in personal impact and relativity. Sometimes the right (or wrong!) word has more power that destroying the Earth. And a lot of it comes from the limitations. How easy is everything when you have all the power, but the limitations are what shape the plausibility, the humanity and the imagination around it. For example Magneto. It's because of his clear limitations that he scaping from the plastic underground prison in the movies is so fantastic. He uses a creative solution to work around his limits. Amazing!
Idk man, Brandon Sanderson said this shit already. Go see him go see him.

happy birthday to the absolute love of my life iwaizumi hajime!!! have a medley of timeskip hcs bc i barely do those and the only way i can confront being an adult is with characters who became adults alongside me :))
i think no matter where oikawa and iwaizumi are in the world, oikawa always sends a birthday text right as the clock strikes 12 in iwa's time. even if it's four AM on oikawa's side he vows to always be the first to wish iwaizumi a happy birthday :))
(it started when oikawa left for argentina, because that would have been the first birthday they'd spent apart from each other. it's the least oikawa can do, in his eyes. it's the least he can do for not being there.)
do you ever think about the moment where two characters who have never met but have a previous connection to each other via another character find out about said character after meeting. bc i do. a LOT
bonus points if that "someone" is kageyama or hinata or karasuno as a general nuisance
anyways this happens when kuroo and iwaizumi meet and it's HILARIOUS
"what do you MEAN you got your ass whooped by them in high school I got my ass whooped by them in high school too!!!!"
this is a freakishly common occurrence in japan's professional volleyball circuit. there's a support group chat for it and it's got over fifteen people
(there are a few exceptions - komori's really just there for the kicks)
speaking of which. i don't think komori ever stops being a megafan of yaku's. when he hears that they're going to be playing side-by-side on the national team he IMMEDIATELY dials sakusa and just screams into the phone for like a solid minute
hyakuzawa was really shy with everyone at first bc he never really knew them much before, but at his first practice match hoshiumi slammed a ball onto the floor so hard it ricocheted and hit atsumu in the face and, without missing a beat and while atsumu was yelling for hoshiumi to eat shit through a bloody nose, hoshiumi turned to him and went "see that? that was a lesson on what NOT to do" and hyakuzawa knew at that moment that he was in a safe space
sometimes ushijima and iwaizumi will talk about irvine like it was some secret dreamy romantic getaway between starcrossed lovers from medieval times
iwaizumi: "man i remember that one night we drove to the desert to stargaze. that was so cool. really pretty. i forgot my jacket and ushijima was kind enough to lend me his" ushijima: "it would not have done for you to catch a cold, we had a meeting with my father the next day to ask for his blessing" everyone else: "what the actual fuck"
the blessing was to see if utsui could take iwaizumi on for an internship
okay wait quick break from national team shenanigans bc i was thinking about this for a while but i think romero is soooooo impressed when hoshiumi, kageyama, and ushijima tell him that they all know hinata personally. i think he asks them to help ask if hinata can do a favor for him
"you want hinata to WHAT" "i want him to throw me like a paper weight!!! so i can show my son!!!"
hinata's like "OH MY GOD NICOLAS ROMERO WANTS ME TO THROW HIM???" like he's SO honored. he thinks it's an honor to be able to throw romero and romero thinks it's an honor to BE thrown by hinata it's so stupid i love them
and then romero calls his son and is like "SON GUESS WHAT. NINJA SHOUYOU THREW ME LIKE A PAPERWEIGHT TODAY" and sends him the video and little romero is SO hyped
in general i think hinata AND hoshiumi would be able to bench press like 99% of the adlers and the jackals and like. maybe the whole pro league
hoshiumi wants to try so he goes "hey kageyama c'mere for a sec!!" and kageyama is all "?? okay sure" and he just scoops kageyama up, tosses him in the air, catches him and puts him down like "okay thanks, you can get back to what you were doing now!"
i think kageyama actually looks up to hoshiumi a whole lot and it's super cute
okay sorry back to national/all-stars teams squad shenanigans
suna has the newest phone within the canon timeline because his old one broke when hakuba spiked a volleyball into it trying to do a trickshot
suna wasn't even mad bc they DID land the shot it was sick as hell
nobody was really familiar with iizuna aside from, like, sakusa and komori and MAYBE yaku and ushijima so when he joined the all stars match all cool and calm and capable and hot like 90% fell in love. and then he wrestled sakusa into a headlock within five minutes of sakusa being a little bitch and they fell in love even more
this part here was supposed to be a fun little bit about the all-stars team dynamics bc it's funny as hell but it was getting WAY too long and i severely underestimated how insanely complicated having people with grudges like ten years running would be on the same team so like. expect another post soon i guess?
ANYWAYS
they always try to do something when everyone is in town for training or some kind of promo exhibit like the all-stars match bc otherwise it's really really hard to hang out since they're scattered all over the place
imagine if they went to the beach. like. imagine if you were just the average beach goer and you went one day and all of a sudden there is a whole ass group of twenty or so incredibly powerful men who all look like they could kill you with just one hand and they're all screaming their heads off playing beach volleyball. and you look at them and you think they seem vaguely familiar but you don't know why. and then you go home and check twitter and your beach is trending and THAT'S how you find out that the entire goddamn national team took a day trip to visit the beach

"A prelude spin-off for an upcoming fic"

An Oikawa Tooru x reader one shot
a/n: uhmm, more clues? be wary of the details?
Tumblr media
A new country is scary for Oikawa Tooru. Yeah, sure, this is one step closer to his dream but he has left a ginormous part of him back in Japan. His life is there. She is there. She, whom he left for his dream so hastily, a dream he chose and will always choose over anything and anyone. And he's guilty.
But she smiled and let me go, he thought as he stared into the ceiling of his new room of 2 days. He figured he wasn't much as important as someone else that it was easy for her to agree on this. Why wouldn't she? Who was he to her to hold onto anyway?
She'll be fine without me. I'm gonna be fine. Everything will be fine.
Tooru continuously convinced himself as he sorted out the last boxes onto his apartment. It's still dusty, he decided to clean up after moving his things to their places. He declined Coach Blanco's help on this, don't wanna bother him more than his bothersome favor of letting him join the Argentinean League even though he's still processing his citizenship.
He met the team he'll be playing the day before, figured they were nice and was excited about a Japanese setter on their team, a fresh talent for the upcoming league. And Ushijima Wakatoshi and Kageyama Tobio aren't here, how extravagant.
The neighborhood was nice, the people more so. It's lovely and lively, even at nights. The culture was shocking but it's to be expected. Though, he'd still prefer Miyagi's countryside air over this bustling city life in the other side of the world. His heart was there. Homesickness still hasn't settled in hard, but it will be after a punch so hard it'll wake him up for what he had left but can't go back to.
"Someone's waiting for you across your street. At a bistro of sorts? I don't know but you'll know when you see them, Kawa."
It was a week after he moved to Argentina, and here is Hajime calling him. He thought his bestfriend will be checking up on him like his first day here, he unconsciously pouted out of habit.
"Who is it?"
"Just go and face them, you shitty mess."
Dejectively, he said "I'm not shitty, Iwa-chan.", pulling out his sweatpants and sweater ready for a chilly night outside.
He wondered who was it that's waiting for him. He has wild guesses, first was of course, Hajime. And, or maybe Issei and Maki. Or maybeー
His lazy paces turned excited as he thought of her waiting for him somewhere near, somewhere he can finally reach. Did she made up her mind on the offer? But what about her life in Japan? But, is she really here? That can be possible right?
The lights were dancing on Tooru's face as he ran from bistro to bistro in his street to find her, thrill showing in his face. He didn't even notice he was grinning already, a sincere grin he didn't flash publicly for over three weeks. He was expecting to see her.
He felt his knuckles tighten as he saw them though, one smirking, standing up, and one just lounging, seriously staring back at him. He shouldn't have expected for her, he should've expected for the worst, this worst. His grin turned devilish, the usual one he flashes when he's agitated over a play, the one he erased from his face whenever he's with her.
And you saw that face shift of Tooru's, frame by frame.
You knew him. Who wouldn't? Except for the fact that he's your neighbor next door, he's the only new blood around the area and the single ladies working for your family's bistro are instantly swooning over this new foreign specimen. Messy chocolate brown hair with chocolate brown eyes to match, that panty-dropping smile and voice, his outgoing personalityーto which you're not comfortable with, you don't know whyーand his skills for volleyball. You saw him once early morning at an outdoor volleyball court just off the block and figured he might be joining the province's volleyball league club so soon.
And this face shift now was new to you, evident too for having some of the ladies having eyes on this particular scene.
The two guys that ordered nothing but a tall glass of iced tea and fries has been at the same spot in the bistro for roughly three hours, speaking in a foreign language you know is Japanese, considering you heard Tooru once talking over the phone. You assumed that they're here for him, and you were right. But not this kind of right. You slowly detached yourself from behind the counter, taking off your apron.
And Tooru has just his eyes on the man standing and smirking at him. It has been over a year since Tooru last saw him, after he made an honest mistakeーwell, it's not really this man's mistake but Tooru thinks he had been toying with her feelings, one he really disliked of him up to this day. And of how the way the man is smirking at him right now, Tooru knows it's his turn to be misunderstood.
"It's been a while, man. 'Sup?" Tooru said so casually, walking up to their table at the side of the bistro.
The man scratched his brows and looked down, but Tooru knows he's seething. He smirked before hearing a "Yeah, it's been a while Tooru."
And Tooru felt it in his cheek, on his hip clashing to one of the empty table beside him, hard. This man has been playing volleyball for as long as him, it's not to doubt that he can throw a punch this hard too as much as he could spike, he can taste something metallic inside his cheeks, a sting on his lip. But Tooru just scoffed and grinned as usual, retaining his balance and stood face to face with him, dangerously close.
"HEY!"
If Tooru heard you, he didn't react, raging eyes focused on the man infront of him. But the other man seated between them turned his head to you, gray eyes dead contrasting the boyish grin he flashed and said, "Sorry. This is how we greet each other in our place. Don't call the cops. They will talk with each other nowー" and he turned to the two with a cold voice, "ーin a civilized manner, right?"
The man who punched Tooru groaned at what the gray-eyed man said and heeded, sat, pointed the seat in front of him, gesturing Tooru to sit there. That was when Tooru caught your eyes, deadpan and emotionless. He sighed, wiping blood off his mouth, seethed at the sting off his lip and sat down in front of his two visitors.
You walked back to your kitchen and got ice cubes, almost on instinct on your part. You came back out to their table with a glass of water and the ice cubes.
"Estás bien, Tooru?" But Tooru just shot his brows up without looking up and ran his fingers on the cold feeling of the compression sack of ice cubes.
Tooru's mind was hazy from the avalanche of presence in front of him and for the possible reasons why they are here, why they spared time and money to just deliver a punch from across the globe. He felt your eyes linger a bit more before sighing and leave. One thing was clear in his mind that moment, though. He wished someone to drag him out of that place.
"Why are you both here?"
"To ask you why THE FUCK d'you leave her like that."
He expected that question, and he knew the answer too well. It's just dumb to ask that to him, and the one who asked is just too dumb to ask without knowing himself that he's the answer. Tooru can't help but smirk. The slight scrunch on his lips sent miniscule shots of pain from the punch earlier.
Tooru can't believe they travelled to where he is just to ask that, personally. Well, maybe it was the punch that motivated them. And Tooru needed that, too, given what he had left.
"Can't believe you picked volleyball over her! AND you promised me! YOU PROMISED ME TOORU! FUCK!" Together with the raise of his voice, the table wobbled at his smacks on it, earning a groan from the other next to him, reflexively lifting the glasses of iced teas off the table in time.
"Hey! Not the iced teas! I'm gonna kick you!"
Tooru dead-stared at the man glaring at him and he flashed his evil grin at him, super annoyed of his cluelessness of the situation.
"You think if I picked her, she'll also pick me? No. She'll still pick you over anyone else." He stopped grinning, still dead staring, his following words are on a lower octave, menacing. "And you fucking know that."
"I love her and fuck, I want her to be happy even if you can't believe it. And if she's gonna be happy with you, thenー" Tooru spread his arms wide, his expression changing to melancholic. "ーI'm gonna welcome that fact with open arms."
The other man scoffed at his seat, still eating the fries he ordered. "You don't destroy the people you love, Tooru." The other man side-eyed the man beside him. "That goes for you, too."
"But you promised me." It was a mumble now, taking Tooru back 4 months ago when this man in front of him purposely meet and talked with him about Ran. "You promised to be with her until I come back."
"Not all people can take it. If this person right here with you can take it, I can't. There's just so much pain I can take if it's her."
"She's pregnant."
Tooru's eyes were slow to meet the man's eyes, his expression looked like he got pulled down a few meters more than it sank before. It was for a moment, but you saw it from the counter. Your eyes flickered curiosity and worry.
Tooru smiled sincerely to the men's surprise. "Then, go home. Be with her. She needs you. And congratulations.. on being a dad."
The man who Tooru declared a dad suddenly stood up, knocking his chair back, grabbed Tooru's collar with him and close to him, stared into his sad eyes. The man beside them groaned, but not at the collar-grabbing scene now but on what Tooru said.
"Fuck. You." The man sincerely spouted those words to Tooru's now smirking face. "FUCK YOU!"
But Tooru ignored him and turned to the man who's drinking his glass of iced tea from the tension. "'Samu, don't waste time. He had already wasted so much of it. Drag him back to Ran."
And he thankfully got a nice response as Osamu stood up and slap the man's hands off of Tooru's collar, "Let's go back to Japan."
"OSAMUー"
"I KNOW! I FUCKING KNOW! BUT I HAVE ALREADY TOLERATED YOU TOO FUCKING LONG! NOW DROP TOORU OFF!" Osamu breathed heavy, staring back at the still-aggravated man. The tension of the bistro has risen up and the dining locals are all-eyes to the scene in front of them. "Please. I don't want Ran to kill me if you get jailed from across the world. C'mon. You heard from Tooru already."
The man dropped Tooru's collar that slumped Tooru back to his seat as his knees buckled for some reason he clearly knew. He just stared straight ahead, off nowhere, muffled conversations he can't make up but he heard the man clearly said before leaving.
"Stay away from Ran. You left her, right? Then stay there and watch as I make her the happiest woman alive."
Those words crumbled his world, made him double guess his choice. He was so sure of this when he told Ran, even invited her to go with him even if he knew it's a shot to the moon. He was so sure because this is his life-long dream. But now..
You saw him still staring blankly to open space, not moving. Your ladies have sympathetic looks for him and asking if he's ever okay, can't they see that he isn't?
You were about to approach him after a good 30 minutes of no-nothing from Tooru when he suddenly stood up, "Lo siento por eso, Y/n." and went straight out of the bistro looking so sullen, without even looking at you, or anyone.
And that was just the start of your weird attraction to him.
You found yourself knocking on his door one early night off from the bistro, with a container full of pasta to share to him. You already distributed the good half of what's left to your other neighbors and you purposely left him last, coz maybe you'd want to check up on him too.
It has been a week since his encounter in the bistro, a week since you noticed him ever going out of his apartment. Your mama was quite worried for the young man after you told her what happened, urging you to talk to him being the only one around his age in the apartment building.
And alas! You're here. You fidgeted with your toes curling and relaxing, tapping the pads against your rubbery surface of your slippers. Why's he not answering? He not dead, right? He better not be. You knocked again, three loud knocks just to be sure.
You were about to do a set of knocks again when the door swung open, revealing a topless Tooru, emotionless eyes drooping and bloodshot, hair all over the place, his sweatpants hang low on his hips revealing the garter part of his boxers underneath. You revel in the way he stared at you as he leans on his door jamb, waiting for you to say something. That was when you realize that you're already rudely staring.
He cocked a brow that elicited your voice. "Pasta?"
He hummed and opened the door wider, an invitation for you to come in his apartment, and you took a step in. Later on, you'd regret ever stepping into his life too.
Your eyes swept through his place. It's messy, like he threw things all over the place. A broken picture frame with glasses all over them, a broken drinking glass too just off the counter, the mirror off the corner is cracked in the middle with blood in it, throw pillows scattered in his sala, and a picture frame on the carpet near the couch.
Glass plates clanked at one another as Tooru got one for the pasta and you noticed his knuckle that got dried blood on it as he placed the plate in front of you on the table. It was silent, except for the water dripping from his kitchen sink and of his hoarse breathing.
"Close the door when you leave. Gracias."
That was out from his cold voice, uncharacteristic from the outgoing Tooru that you knew. Your eyes trained at him as he lazily walked back to his couch and sprawled like nothing happened, fingers caressing the picture frame below.
You took a deep breath as you transferred the pasta to his plate and slid it inside his fridge. You took more deep breaths as you searched for his broom and fixed the mess around his apartment. He didn't utter a word, might've not heard of you as he has his eyes closed, a tear pending on the side of his eye. Asleep? That fast?
Your lips formed a thin line as you pursed them, padding quietly close to him to watch his chest heave as he breathes. Your eyes travelled to his arm draping down the couch and to his fingers touching the glass of the picture frameーof a beaming golden haired girl with him, also beaming and ruffling the girl's hair.
You bend over to pick it up, a hand reaching over the frame, but your soul flew out of your body when suddenly, Tooru's hand gripped your wrist so hard you winced. Your head whipped to the fully-awake Tooru, burning eyes on you. Your soul wanted to flee right then and there but you were frozen, enthralled by the hidden emotion on that raging brown eyes.
"I'm sure it's not in your culture to touch the things you don't own without the owner's consent." The grip on your wrist tighten more when you didn't answer seconds later.
"Lo siento, Tooru. Just wanna fix your apartment for you."
Tooru just hummed and picked the frame with the hand he used to grip your wrist, hugged it against his bare chest, back to closing his eyes. "Gracias. Close the door."
Rubbing the sting on your wrist, you made way for his door yet your hand lingered on the knob. You sighed, head craning up, contemplating if you should say it or not, or how would he respond or not, but there's nothing wrong in asking it right?
"Tooruー" Yep, you can't. "ーMama's having a welcome party for you on the weekend."
Tooru just hummed and a silence so deafening followed. Your eyes flew to the faucet of his kitchen sink and glared at it for being so traitorous.
"You come over, 'kay? You can bring anyone, e-even your team."
Silence again. You bit your lip and sighed. Okay, that's it for now, Y/n. That's it for now.
And you were glad you did ask him that night because when Saturday night came, he did show up with his team, Club Atletico San Juan. What you didn't expect was his composure. Tooru's back to being outgoing and has a friendly aura around him, he even smiled at you and your parents, thanking you for the party.
You were left confused all night, stealing glances on him as he laughs and converse with his team and some of the locals. He even caught you once, but he just smiled and raised his beer mug, and went back talking.
Now you know why you're uncomfortable with this kind of personality of Tooru's. You have already seen the surface of his other side.
You were deemed observant even before Tooru appeared, and this right here was spot on. You scrunched your nose and shook your head, shaking the thoughts off your mind. You knew you shouldn't be attached to this kind of man. He's dangerousーbut interesting. You caught yourself groaning, you wanna dump your head straight to a bucket of cold water.
"Y/n, Tooru's table."
Your mama pushed a tray with two buckets of beers and you heaved it up to take it to Tooru's table. He saw you coming and stood up to help you. You smiled at him and offered your gratitude but he surprised you when he held your hand and guided you to seatーon his lap. Jeers erupted the table, and of the place.
"You don't mind, Señor? Señora?"
He called out to your parents, your eyes flickering to your mama in the counter and papa just off a few tables, drinking with his pals, both just shook their heads in approval, tolerant to the newcomer. You attempted to stand up but he snaked an arm around your waist to ground you. His stern eyes flickered to you for a second before beaming his usual smile.
He handed a bottle to you, "Drink?" The smell of alcohol wafted across your face from Tooru's mouth. You stared at his now dancing chocolate eyes, red shade on his neck and cheeks up to his ears. You thought he's drunk already, how much did he drink anyway?
You sighed and took the bottle he offered, drank from it. You felt weird being this close with a stranger. Well, not totally a stranger, you had known him for roughly two weeks now. But stillー
You took notice of how his hand was caressing your thighs as he talks with his team as the night went on with you still on his lap, his hand on your waist creating gentle strokes that made your head fuzzy, added the alcohol in your system. That's when you decided to stop drinking. And Tooru took notice of that. He leaned back on his chair and guided your head to lean on his shoulder.
Shutting your eyes won't do the trick, you still felt eyes staring at you as you let him do what he wants. Fuck tolerance. Fuck.
"You're not comfortable?" He mumbled low, enough that you're the only one to hear. You sneered at him.
"Is this a payback for what I did in your apartment?"
"Not quite, cariño." You instantly blushed at the unexpected endearment, stomping at his feet to which he grinned momentarily and sighed thereafter, "Stay here with me for a while, por favor."
And you didn't know how the tone of his voice enchanted you to agreeing on staying at his lap, found yourself nuzzling on his neck a moment later to which he sighed and caressed your hair as he felt your breath on his neck. And you should find a right answer to the flooding questions from people later on. Right now, his proximity first. He needs you, and you understand him somehow. The questions can wait.
"Her name is Ran, Y/n."
Tooru slurred as he rolled over his bed after being dropped by his teammates back to his apartment. You got a warm towel at hand, done with wiping his body off of sweat and alcohol, fresh clothes that his teammates change him into. He's facing you right now, enjoying in the way your hands ran through his brown locks.
"She'sーI love her, so much. But the man you saw punched me? That was his boyfriend." He closed his eyes and smiled, tears were rolling down to his pillowcase and you looked at him solemnly.
"They're complicated, and I got in the way and now, got swooped out of the pictureー" He heaved a hard sigh, you taking notice of the toll it cost on Tooru. "ーlike how it was meant to be all along. I knew it would happen. I knew it will, butー" He opened his eyes, stared straight, not meeting your eyes, "ーI never knew it'll hurt this much. This is what I get from getting in between."
You cupped his face. "But, 'ñorito, there's nothing wrong with loving her. I think you're brave to still express your feelings even if she loves someone else."
"You don't destroy the people you love."
That line got stuck with you as the days went by.
Tooru got moving again, taking jogs so early in the morning you see him go as you're drinking your cup of coffee, blanket around you in your little balcony facing the street. And he got more friendly, the little kids try to imitate him but Tooru's pace is just much for them. And the ladies, oh the ladies, you can't help but palm your face and grin as he winks at them as he passes by, making the ladies squeal and giggle so early in the morning.
"He's drunk, and I was dizzy. That's all."
You have repeated that monotonous answer to all who asked about that Saturday night with Tooru. It was exhausting but still thankful that Tooru lets you answer the way you wantedーwell, there's nothing to change, it is what it is.
But your mama knew better.
"It's okay to get attracted, I'll understand, but guard your heart hija, mi amor."
You took deep breaths as you were assigned to bring Tooru's dinner to his table. He does this every night if he finish practice early. He takes dinner in the bistro in just a white shirt and gym shorts. But why does he looks more good like this? Is it the dried sweat lingering in his hairline? Or the way his face towel hangs on his shoulder? Or just his glittering chocolate orbs dancing to the bistro lights?
"Gracias."
You were about to turn back to the counter, wiping your hands on your apron as you intended to go. But you were pulled back by your elbow, hearing a squeal from your kitchen. Oh great. You smiled at the owner of the hand that's also beaming at you and offering half of his clubhouse sandwich.
"Eat with me?"
And it's always like this, him, inviting you to random activities like this. Eating dinner with him, dragging you to jog with him early in the morning, dragging you to his practice if you're off in the bistro, begging you to teach him how to cook Argentinean cuisines, stroll with him in the park when it's his turn for a dayoff, movie nights, movie nights, movie nights.
You don't know if it's sympathy for him being alone in a foreign country, heartbroken and still mending, while reaching for his goals or it's just yourself, fully attracted to him. You don't even know when and how did it started, you just find yourself one morning thinking what will he do to get your attention, or what favors will he be asking again. He eased in your life so easily with progressing favors and it's still barely a month.
"Mama! Borrowing Y/n for tonight!"
It just took a month to arrive to this night, the night that will change everything in you. You kept asking how the hell were you so easy to get for Tooru but it took the others over a year to get you. Thoughts swarming your head as he stared at you, him having laid his head on your lap looking up at you after you said something like, "Someone out there likes you Tooru, you're enjoyable to be with, no dull moments. You're hella attractive, take a hint from the ladies on the streets as you jog by. You might have some red flags but I believe you can work with that. AndーTooru, you're boyfriend material."
He got up, had his back against your thigh, a hand on the couch on your back caging you, and even if you're both seated, he's still looking slightly down at you. And he's dangerously close, you can't deny if he'll ever say he can hear your heart pound harder.
"Can I kiss you for that?"
You can feel the enchantment in his voice again, with an intense stare to match. You have to pause and think for a second. He's in a heartbroken state, and can easily be swayed with sweet words, thirsty for comfort. And you're the closest to get it from, as for now. You might be left behind, hell he might just forget this favor in the morning. He can be playing with you, teasing youーbut being aware of that annoying attraction you have for him, you fucking nodded, eye closed and anticipating.
You felt his hands ghosting on your face, keeping some strands away, caressing your cheek with a finger before cupping it with the delicate touch of his calloused hands. Then you can feel his breath fanning across your face, you sucked your breath from the closeness, your nails digging to your palm, and you heard him chuckle.
"Relax. Won't eat you."
You smirked, still with your eyes closed. "What a lie."
Then you felt it, his fluttering lips pressed onto yours ever so gently you felt it barely touched, brushed might be a good term before he pressed it firmly, and another one, and another until you can't take the teasing and your hands flew to the back of his neck and pulled him closer to kiss him back. Your eyes fluttered open when you pulled back, meeting his eyes full of shock and curiosity and amusement and you just rolled your eyes on him, rubbing a thumb on his skin.
His face is breaking a breathy smile when he felt your awkwardness from the way your arms loosened in his neck. "Can I touch you?"
You instantly felt fire in your cheeks, swallowed a lump on your throat and Tooru sees how your reactions danced in your face, frame by frame. And he is amused by it, much more when you nodded.
He smiled at you before going for a deep kiss, poking his tongue onto your lips for entry, and you granted him access, running your hands on his hair slightly tugging. You can't help but moan at how his tongue flicks against yours, and how his hands wander on your thighs, rubbing so sensually. Then you yelped when he lifted you up to his lap, straddling him and capturing your lips again.
Tooru's hands travelled up your skirt, gripping your ass and smirked through your kiss, realizing you just wore your thong. You pulled away enough to mutter a "Shut up, Tooru." And you smashed your lips back to his, hungrily kissing him and groaning the constant teasing of his fingers in your underwear's garter.
"Can I do more?" He asked after a few good minutes of kissing and groping, his breath heavy, eyes hazy with lust. "Fuck. Please, let me do more."
You tilted your head, mocking him and you laughed when he groaned and buried his head on your chest. You're no better, you can feel wetness from between your thighs and it's just a matter of time before he notices that, and he will still tease you no matter what so you lowered your hips, lining your wetness to his hard-on and started grinding, earning an animalistic groan from him.
"Fucking shit. You're wet already, mi amor. Lo sienーfuck."
You moaned as he tightened his grip on your waist, guiding it down and faster. "I'm gonna ravish you, okay?"
He didn't waited for your answer as he captured your gaping mouth and swallowed your moans. You can feel his finger swiped through your wetness before lifting you up to his room and down to his soft mattress. And even if this is the first time seeing him above you like this, you know you can't get enough of this sight. It's so captivating, swallowing your thoughts whole, ignoring the danger alerts from your system. You won't have this any other way.
Tooru woke up to a soft grip around his waist, a comfortable weight on his draped arm. Thoughts from the previous night came reeling and he sighed, pulling you closer by your head and kissed your hair to which you hummed and nuzzled your head to his neck.
He stared at the ceiling, remembering the conversation that led you to his bed. His face soured as he reached for his phone. It was muted the whole day yesterday for some reason he can't stomach but the curiosity is killing him now.

Oh.
RAN'S PLUSHIE
Heyyy! I'm sorry! But are y'all enjoying??
Tooru discarded his phone to his nightstand, the pictures sent embedded in his mind too late. All he could do was card your locks, closing his eyes, prohibiting any tears to fall from his eyes.
He has to accept it. He did this to himself. Now he has to face it. And begrudgingly dragging you to the mess that he is. He'll regret this, but what's there to mess more in his life?
His phone kept ringing and buzzing as the days went by. He's back to his usual routine, morning jogs, day to afternoon practices and nights with you. As you moan in his ears as you came the fourth time a month after your first hook up with him, he can't shake the thought that why is it so hard to detach himself from Ran and make space for you in his heart other than this heated relationship you have with him.
You're kind, and thoughtful, you understand him, saw his darkest parts, and you're gorgeous. He kept throwing glances to those men who checks you out when you're out jogging with him, even some of his teammates are checking you out he glared at them once. He's.. protective of you. All he knows is he wants you near him, like this. You somehow provide comfort in his messy world, a pillow to hug through his lonely life. And he has to somehow repay you, other than being a fuckbuddy.
So, he started cooking for you when he comes back to his apartment from practice, helping in the bistro on his days off, giving you random sunflowers picked from the park you had to smack his arm everytime through your blush. He's not oblivious to your budding feelings, and he'll be damned he knows it, unable to reciprocate it.
"Where are we going?"
He huffed as he cruised through the road out of the city, bags for a week packed on the back seat.
"The team's got a friendly match in Mar del Plata, can't leave you behind." He side eyed you and smiled, his features in the sunrise looked so dazzling as always.
And you were debating with your heart again, continuously asking what kind of relationship is this. You never dared opening up the topic, afraid that opening it up would instantly end whatever this is. And you're sure you're not ready for it to happen.
Your train of thoughts were halted when he hummed, "Y/n, just wanna let you know I'm in the roster already, training to be their starter setter. If I acquire my citizenship within three months, I can join the leagues in November."
You grinned at him, a leg propped on your seat as you turn your body to face him. "I knew you could do it, Tooru. Tan orgulloso de ti."
Tooru's hand reached for your thigh and squeezed it, nonverbally thanking you for the support. And it stayed there for hours, through the talks about his life in Japan and about his friends, until you fell asleep through the drive. And you shall know though, many years from now, that it's the most peaceful drive Tooru had in his life, with you just slumbering away while he drove across the country.
Nothing much to do in Mar del Plata other than being in their practices and on the actual match later that week, professional volleyball player Oikawa Tooru on full display. When in court, you can see his glow, brighter than how the sunshine reflects on his face every morning when he cuddles you after a steamy fuck the night before. Of course, this is his life-goal, and you're just his.. go-to.
You can't help but be sullen whenever the thought hit you. And more so that night out after the game with the other team.
The other team, you discovered, were on friendly terms with Tooru's team for years and both of you are new to them so basically, you're the center of attention tonight.
"Tooru, si? How's CA San Juan?"
"They're exceptional."
"Have you been always a setter?"
"Yes, since middle school."
"Why Argentinean League?"
Evading conflicts. "Wanna go against certain players in the future as national players."
You leaned your head at his shoulder as he offered that white lie to them, fiddling with your phone. The teams jeered at how Tooru answered it and encouraged him more on being a national player. You smiled, but dropped almost immediately when the captain of the other team raised the question.
"Who is she? Your girlfriend?"
Tooru turned his head to you, peeked through your lashes and you smiled, "No." You leaned away from him almost immediately as you answered. And Tooru stared at you at the rest of the night, silent, even through the drive home the day after.
There was nothing wrong with how you answered the question, right? You're just stating facts. You're not clearly his girlfriend, because clearly he's not yet over Ran, his love of his life. You peeled your eyes from his pheripherals. You can't let Tooru see how your eyes saddened.
And sadness and nausea pulled you to sleep.
"ーIwa-chan. She's.. I don't knowー"
"You're clearly making her a rebound, Shittykawa."
"No."
"Don't confuse yourself. Don't hurt her in expense of your comfort."
"I'm not, Hajime, IーI can drop everything I worked hard, for her, to stay with her."
"ARE YOU NUTS!?"
"Nー"
"THAT'S THE GOAL OF YOUR LIFETIME, SINCE PRIMARY AND YOU'RE GONNA DROP IT!?"
"Tone down. She might hear you, she's just sleeping."
"What the fuck, YOU'RE CRAZY!"
"I can'tーHajime, not her. Not again."
"YOU'RE JUST SEEING TSUKISHIMA RAN IN HER!"
"Tsk. If you can't drop your tone down, I'm ending the call."
"THEN END IT I DON'T WANNA TALK TO YOU! YOU'RE FRUSTRATING! THAT'S OUR GOAL AND YOU'RE JUST GONNAー"
You heard him huff, clearly frustrated of his bestfriend and you noticed he sped up to the last stretch to town. He didn't notice you were awake, good, because you don't know how to react to that conversation.
Your attention was on your belly and a tear escaped from your eyes. You swallowed hard as you waited patiently to be on the confines of your home.
Tooru barged in your room on a weekend after the Mar del Plata trip, catching you barfing on your bathroom sink. "Bad pasta." You had said to reassure him, smiling over your shoulder. He rubbed your back after he had gone to get you a glass of water.
You had to inform him of your college plans out of the country. You knew it was sudden, but you needed this. And maybe now's the best time, considering he might've seen the luggages all around your room.
"Tooru." You called his attention while wiping your face. Damn, bad pasta. "I'll be going to Rio de Janeiro for college in the fall." No brakes, just go straight ahead, Y/n. If you get caught up, it'll destroy you both.
And you had to veer your eyes away from his, offering a smile you don't know if it's sincere or no.
"Y/n?"
"I have been planning this even before you came." Go on, Y/n.
"Can I come with you?"
You shook your head, smile still plastered at your face as you turn to him. "No, Tooru. You'll be getting your citizenship soon and the team needs their fresh setter."
"How about your parents?"
"They'll be staying in the country, but they're going back to Rio Gallegos."
His eyes went wild, searching for something in your eyes. Is it panic that you're seeing? You suddenly felt bad. You just wanted to be in his room, in his arms, like last week, like the weeks, months before that.
"The bistro?"
"Will be turned over to Tiá Carmellita."
"Y/n, you're leaving me."
Osamu's was the name right? words that night in the bistro slammed to you like a trailer truck. You took Tooru's hand and kissed it. "I'll be back before you know it. First, you have to make your dreams come true here, in San Juan, okay?"
Tooru's head was swimming on a pool of oil or tar where he can't get out of. Seeing you packing, the thoughts of you leaving is plaguing him like locusts. And he can't say anything, clearly baffled of what's happening in front of him, and on inside of him. What's happening to him?
He got his own taste of medicine, getting left for their own goals. And you, of all people, is doing that to him, makes the pain doubling him over to the edge of sanity. But he's confused. Why is he feeling this for you?
But you'll come back, right? Yeah, you'll come back. Nothing to be worried about.
Though, he still rushed to the airport to see you one last time for the promised four years of being away. And that too, he failed to do, and without knowing you waited two hours for him to come by, guessing you're not that important to him, and it's still volleyball Tooru's prioritizing. And definitely, you couldn't hold onto what he said to his bestfriend over the phone. And he said to keep in touch, but you have no plans to.
Being with him is dangerous for you, and for the little growing pasta inside of you.
You're cradling your little bundle of joy of a three-month-old to sleep as you heard a knock on your door. Must be the food delivery, your mouth instantly watered and you rushed for the door.
You were greeted by an orange-haired man, all dressed like the usual delivery man of your favorite restaurant nearby. Though, you were familiar of him for he had moved two apartments down your unit and.. he's clearly Japanese.
"Thank you, Shoyo. Come in and get the money in that table." You nudged your chin to the high table beside your mirror just off the sala.
"Seu bebê está dormindo, Y/n?"
"About to." And you turned to face your baby to Shoyo, and he instantly cooed and poked her fluffy cheeks.
"Adeus Thalia~"
"Adeus Tió Shoyo~"
And he's about to go out the door when you called out to him. "Shoyo, relax, you'll gonna be fine." Because you noticed him in his first month that he's nowhere okay, probably missing home like that achingly familiar guy. Shoyo nodded at you, lips quivering and bowed, clutching the strap of his delivery bag. When he was gone, you sighed deeply thinking you're seriously plagued with Japanese neighbors.
The days went by and you decided to expose your baby to the sunshine and to people. You just hope she'll be a good pasta out there, hoping she's as sociable as her father. And you were thankful that she is, as she flapped her fat arms to passerbys as you head for the beach. You remembered Shoyo and his friends are lounging here when they got nothing to do, except for Pedro that's probably cooped up on his room.
But suddenly, Thalia went rigid in your arms and after three months of taking care of this cute pasta, you knew what was happening as she started getting whiny and whimpering. You kissed her cheeks and turned back to your apartment. And that's when you heard it..
"Oikawa-san!"
"ChibiーAh! Shoyo!"
Your breath went suddenly restricted, you feel your feet wobbled you held on tight to Thalia, forcing your steps towards the path to your apartment.
"What are you doing here Oikawa-san?"
"Uh, that's my question, thanks. Don't steal it."
Faster, Y/n. Before he notices you and your crying pasta. Fuck. What are the odds. WHAT ARE THE ODDS!
"Y/n?"
You froze and looked up, the captain of Tooru's volleyball team staring down at you, surprised. He might've seen your watery eyes and silent plead because he suddenly nodded and just went on like he didn't see you. But seeing Thalia.. You silently battered yourself in your thoughts for being so dumb. You should've known!
You were crying hard as you changed Thalia's diapers, and she's crying with you as you rock her, kissing her head. It was just his voice, but it has already this big of an effect on you. You missed him, so bad, but you can't destroy the ones that you love.
And he's just seeing Ran in you.. you can't indulge in him anymore. You're thankful for Thalia, butー
You froze as you heard a knock, your fear of him taking over.
"W-who is it?" You squeaked as you took a look at your peephole.
"It's me. Pedro." You sighed, but not near to be relax. You opened your door and let Pedro in.
"Você está bem? Your eyes areー"
You placed Thalia in her cot as she got tired of crying and now is sleeping. "I'm fine. I'm fine."
"Uh, just heard Thalia's cries, thought you might need some help?"
You quickly wiped a tear fallen to your cheeks, "Nope. Thank you. Shoyo? Is he home?"
He paced to your dining, and you just noticed the plastic bag on his hand as he placed it on the table. "Nope. But he sent this for you. He also sent for me, too. So.." He studied you for a minute and let his thoughts go, "Eu deveria estar indo. Knock when you need help, okay?"
You nodded as you smiled at him. You wanted to say you wanted to leave Rio, leave a place again just to be away from him completely. You exasperatedly closed your eyes, rubbed your forehead on all the things you're already planning, then your eyes flew to your sleeping pasta.
For Thalia. You'll endure anything.
You just hope he'll be gone after a few days. He should go after a few days. And within that wait, you'll be staying in your apartment. Thalia's exposure to the sun and to the public can wait, just for a few days.
And Tooru was conflicted on being in Rio, to where you said you will be. You haven't contacted him for over a year already, and it's bothering him to the core, much more bothered now than finding out that Ran got twins. He just wanted to see you, be with you, but how can he be with you if he can't even reach you?
And he saw Shoyo instead, glad and might be a little terrified at the evolution he's showcasing Tooru. But still a little clumsy as he said he lost his wallet, so he treated him dinner, and his friends. He told him there's this woman with a newborn in his neighborhood and when Shoyo decided to part his dinner with her, Tooru just ordered a few more for her, without knowing it was you.
He wasn't expecting to see you though, after a year of no contact he thought he was ghosted, just left behind with no traces. But a few years from now, he'll realize he had left a big part of him on you.
"You're kidding me."
Osamu gasp at something Tooru can't figure out from across the table. Shoyo was between the Miya Twins and they're looking at something on his phone. On times he got scared of Osamu, it was always related to Ran, the last one being 7 years ago at a haunting bistro off the streets of San Juan.
Tooru was shocked, as every athlete inside the joint restaurant of Moon and Onigiri Miya in Shibuya crossing, when Osamu grabbed Tooru's collar from across the table.
"Are you fucking kidding me, Tooru?"
"What is your problem now?"
Osamu snatched Shoyo's phone and shoved it to Tooru's face.
Tooru's eyes were achingly slow to reach the Shoyo's phone screen because of his irritation. He was already sleepy and he just wants to go back to his apartment. But no, the heavens have other plans.
He saw you in Shoyo's phone, and his shaky hands reached out to hold the phone yourself, wide eyes and tears running down his cheeks as his eyes fixed on a little girl beside you.
"What the fuck, Oikawa."
"What's happening?"
"There's this kid that looks a lot like him."
"And?"
"Osamu?"
"We met her in San Juan, Shoyo. You didn't even thought about that? How dumb can you be?"
"Yeah, boke. But what? A kid?"
"Thalia's 7 years old now."
"Wait till Hajime hears this, Tooru."
"You're one messed up dude, really."
But he's deaf of the judgments around him. His attention was on you, and his probably little girl. No, not probably, he was sure it's his. She has the same chocolate brown hair and eyes.
He smiled through his tears and faced Shoyo who was just staring at him, waiting for him to say something.
"Y/n's that friend that I told you about, with a newborn."
Tooru closed his eyes, he never realized he was already that close to seeing you. Why didn't youー
"She said Thalia's father is just seeing her as someone else so she never told him she was pregnant. And Y/n's too invested in making that man's dreams come true without her, so she decided to escape from his grasp." Shoyo tilted his head on Tooru in brooding annoyance. "You don't destroy the people you love. She would always say that everytime I ask her why won't she go back, but that applies to you too, huh, Oikawa-san. And twice at that."
The place fell silent at Shoyo's words, except for Osamu's whimpers at the familiarity of the quote he once said at that bistro.
Tooru fell back to his chair, Shoyo's phone falling to the table with a loud thud. His composure was like a broken dam and a series of fucks and what the hells were muttered 'round the place.
"Where is she now, Shoyo? She deserves my apology."
Tooru heard Hajime but his cries came flooding on his system. He didn't even realize he loves you this much until now. Oh what irony.
"She's still at the apartment. I can call her if you're both coー"
"Don't. If she knew Tooru's coming, she might evade him again."
"Tooru-oni, stop crying, you look dumb."
Ran's 7-year old son, Takeshi, was previously seating in Kiyoomi's lap and now he's infront of Tooru, offering his hanky to him. Tooru sniffed hard and wiped his tears, and smiled to which Takeshi scrunched up his nose. So much like his mother. He took the hanky from his little hands and kissed his head. Takeshi made way to Tooru's lap and sat there, cringing at how Tooru blew his nose.
But Tooru hugged Takeshi, kissing his head more, to which Osamu rubbed his face exasperatedly and walked out. "'Keshi, you'll be staying with me tonight just until mama's home, okay?"
"Haiii~"
And Tooru felt Hajime's hand on his shoulders, tapping, encouraging him on facing you a week from now.
But by now, you're not afraid of him anymore, instead you're just waiting for him to find you again, like what the fate did seven years ago. And Thalia's ready for his father, too, but Tooru should expect her grumpiness and competitiveness as she had taken it from him.
"Oikawa Tooru, mama?"
"Si, mi amor."
"He's a dangerous volleyball idiot."
And you laughed. Yeah, he's a volleyball idiot, alright. But dangerous? Hm, nope. He's actually soft and a crybaby that you would want to comfort and protect for all eternity.

~pretend they’re talking in Spanish I don’t know nearly enough Spanish to write this fic in Spanish :)~
They won. They did it. They fucking did it.
My heart was racing as I dashed onto the field. The audience was overjoyed. The atmosphere in the stadium was electric. Everyone (except the French) was giddy with joy. The roar of the audience set my nerves ablaze. I was buzzing.
I only had one task, to find Enzo. My gaze moved over the various faces, searching for a familiar one. Families hugged, and players consoled one another. Enzo had become completely lost in the sea of euphoric bodies.
“Y/N!”
I turned my head, praying my name wasn't a figment of my imagination. He stood tall, the aura of a champion accompanying his figure. I dashed over to him, swiftly closing the gap. My body warmed as he encircled me in a tight hug. With a huge grin on his face, he quickly drew back.
“We won Y/N! How cool is that?”
Enzo lightly shook my shoulders to emphasize his joy. His tone suggested that he was on the verge of happy tears.
“I never had a doubt.”
Enzo chuckled. His eyes were misty, with a few droplets cascading down his flushed cheeks.
¨You have much more faith than I do. When France caught up I thought we were done. I really did.¨
I shrugged my shoulders nonchalantly. He smelled strongly of turf and sweat.
¨I knew you guys would win.¨
I wasn't completely truthful. To be honest, there were times during the game when I worried I'd have to spend the night comforting a distressed rookie. Despite my concerns, the team was able to come out on top.
¨You did great. You really did.¨
Enzo shrugged, placing his hands smugly on his hips.
“I appreciate the praise. It’s not easy carrying the team.”
He remarked sarcastically. I rolled my eyes amusingly. His demeanor had shifted from tears of joy to smug and cocky.
“Well, I’m thrilled to know that, at the very least, you are amazing at being humble.”
We laughed in sync. When the laughter faded away, Enzo glanced around. I cocked an eyebrow, perplexed as to who or what he was searching for.
“Where’s Nick?”
“Oh! Nick couldn’t make it.”
Enzo cocked an eyebrow.
“You said he was coming?”
“Well, I said maybe. He had… an unexpected work thing.”
Enzo scoffed.
“Right, work.”
I didn't want to venture a guess as to what he was implying with his little scoff and suggestive tone. Enzo approached me and slung an arm over my shoulder, a pearly white smile contrasting his tanned face.
“Well, good, that means I got you all to myself tonight.”
I gave him a light smack.
“Wipe that smirk off your face, Fernandez. Remember, I’m someone’s fiancée.”
Would it ever feel normal to describe myself as a fiancée? Enzo pursed his lips.
“Right.”
He said, his voice encompassing a hint of sterness. The smile on his face turned tight. I could tell Enzo didn't like Nicholas. He never explicitly said it, but his body language and tone when speaking of him made his feelings on the subject painfully clear.
“Well, enough of him. You wanna meet a few of my teammates?”
I smiled, relieved that we had moved on from the sensitive subject.
“I’d love to.”
Enzo introduced me to one player after the other. The increasing number of names being crammed into my head confused me. Fortunately, the team had to leave for the trophy ceremony before the amount of letters became unbearable.
A few stray tears fell during the trophy ceremony. It was fantastic to see Enzo named the best young player. Of course, the final lift of the World Cup trophy was flawless. I remembered all the fun times Enzo and I had when he swore he'd be playing for the Argentine national team. Although it seemed like a distant ambition at the time, I had faith in him. It felt good to know that all of my beliefs had paid off.
“Where are you staying? I’ll get you an Uber or something.”
Enzo inquired, once we were on the street.
“Oh, uh, I don’t really know.”
I took out my phone and began scrolling through my email, searching for the reservation.
“Nick did all that for me. He found me someplace.”
I retrieved the reservation and showed it to Enzo. Enzo shook his head in disappointment.
“Hell no, that place sucks.”
I raised my eyebrows.
“Really?”
I was completely taken aback. I assumed Nick had reserved a nice hotel for the night. Enzo confidently nodded.
“Oh yeah.”
I narrowed my eyes, unsure if he was telling the truth.
“Are you just saying that because you hate Nicholas or are you saying that because this place actually sucks?”
Enzo held up his hands in defense.
“I’m being serious! We were looking for places to stay and decided not to stay there because the staff was rude and the reviews were awful! The only reason it comes up first when you search is because it's a paid advertisement.”
I furrowed my brow.
“No way! I don’t believe you!”
When I hunted for reviews, I discovered that the vast majority of them were negative.
“Oh.”
I said meekly, my shoulders sagging as I realized I was going to spend the night in a dirty room with rude staff.
“Well, It’s not like I have another option.”
I stuffed my phone back into my jean pocket, my happy mood dampened. Enzo shook his head vigorously, his arms crossed over his well defined chest.
“Why don’t you stay with me?”
He inquired casually. My eyes widened.
“Oh! No, I couldn’t do that.”
Enzo shrugged nonchalantly.
“Why not?”
“I don’t want to intrude.”
Enzo dismissed my concerns.
“You know you’re always welcome at my place, Y/N.”
He flashed me a bright white smile. I must admit, it was a tempting offer.
“You just won the World Cup, Enzo. You need your sleep and I-”
“Well unless you’re gonna keep me up all night I think I’ll be perfectly fine.”
I gnawed on my lower lip. Enzo could sense my hesitancy to accept his offer.
“Trust me Y/N, you won’t be a bother. I have more room than I need.”
Enzo was listening intently, waiting to hear me accept his offer with sincerity.
“Okay, fine.”
Enzo tried his best to hide the true extent of his joy.
“Amazing. I knew you’d say yes. I do have to leave tomorrow morning though, and get back to Argentina.”
I shrugged.
“That’s fine by me. I’m leaving tomorrow as well.”
The Uber ride was nearly silent. I hadn’t seen Enzo in forever. Now, the one night of my trip we had together, neither of us could speak. I wasn't bothered. I'm sure he was tired, as was I.
The streets of Qatar were beautiful. The sparkling city lights were dazzling to behold. Despite having had the pleasure of taking in the gorgeous scene prior to this night, I gawked in awe as we rolled between the tall buildings.
“It feels so weird. I’m seeing you for the first time in ages tonight and we’re already both leaving tomorrow morning.”
Enzo said. With a sigh, I slid onto the couch, kicking off my shoes in the process.
“I know. We need to be more consistent with our weekly calls.”
It was difficult to live in America when your best friend was always on the move, going wherever the world of fútbol called him. Even when we did have a conversation, it was rarely long enough to be meaningful. Our calls were usually limited to a quick chat at halftime or a few minutes to say hello before bed. As a result, it felt as if I hadn't truly heard from him in ages.
Enzo slid onto the couch, throwing his head back with an obnoxiously loud sigh of relief.
“Do you wanna turn on a movie or something?”
I asked.
“How about we just talk.”
I nodded.
“Sure. I’d like that.”
The air was still. The soft hum of traffic continued below. I drew my knees to my chest, wrapping my arms around my calves to secure my position.
“So, what was it like playing in the World Cup?”
Enzo scoffed.
“It was amazing, obviously. But, like, at the same time I’m really glad it’s over. But, at the same time I’d do it all again if I was asked to, y’know?”
My attention was drawn to his stunning side profile. Thankfully, Enzo’s eyes were closed. Damn. Did he always look this good?
I must still be buzzing from the adrenaline rush.
“Yeah, that makes sense.”
I drew my attention away from him, knowing that if I focused on him for too long, my mind would wander to places I didn't want it to.
“How’s life besides soccer? All good? Any new relationships I should know about?”
I queried, sarcastically. Enzo laughed. I cracked a smile. Even if it was quiet, it felt good to hear his laugh after such a long period of absence. The sound made my heart warm with nostalgia.
“No, nothing super interesting.”
His lack of a social life piqued my interest. I mean, I'm his closest friend. I know he's a wonderful person. So why hadn't anyone else noticed?
“Really? Why?”
Enzo shrugged.
“I’ve been really busy, I guess. There hasn’t been a lot of time to search for hot new singles in my area.”
I noticed a faint smile on his lips. He was pleased with himself for cracking that wonderful joke. Leaning my head against my knees, I chuckled.
“That’s fair.”
I swallowed uncomfortably, knowing that questions about my life would follow. And with questions came the inevitable discussion of a subject I knew Enzo detested. I cast a glance down at my sparkly engagement ring.
“I guess it’s my turn.”
Enzo said with a hint of cheekiness. I exhaled shakily.
“Yeah, I guess so.”
I returned my stare to Enzo. His eyes were open, and his gaze was soft and enticing.
“So, how’s your life?”
I smiled and gave him a meek nod.
“It’s good.”
Enzo's eyes fell to my hand, where he noticed me fondling my engagement ring. He hummed in a disapproving manner before returning his gaze to mine. His pupils were dark, and his stare possessed a hard undertone.
“How’s Nick?”
Oh shit. I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised.
“He’s fine. He’s great, even.”
Enzo shook his head and pursed his lips into a straight line. I couldn't help but scoff at his disapproval. To be honest, I was tired of his games. I needed to put a stop to his childish behavior.
“Enzo, I get it. You hate my fiancé. But can you please for the love of God at least pretend to be happy for me?”
Enzo leaned forward, and his sudden closeness made my heart skip a beat.
“No. I can’t.”
His voice was stern. His gaze had significantly hardened.
I rolled my eyes.
“Why?-”
“Why do I hate your fiancé?”
He gestured to himself.
“I think the better question is why don’t you hate your fiancé?”
My gaze narrowed.
“He’s a jerk! He treats you like shit! The only reason he bought you that ring was so you’d have a reason to talk about him while he’s out partying with his country club friends.”
I shook my head. Enzo exhaled sharply through his nose.
“You know I’m right Y/N. I don’t think you love him-”
“He's a safe choice!-”
“Why are you settling for him? When have you ever cared about being safe? You were always the one telling me I could do anything I wanted if I tried. You deserve so much better than that asshole!”
I clenched my teeth. I felt compelled to spit fire. I wanted to tell Enzo that he was mistaken and that I was madly in love with my fiancé. But, no matter how hard I tried, I couldn't bring myself to lie. So, in an effort to be argumentative, I spoke without thinking.
“Who do I deserve then? Huh? You and only you?”
Enzo's face fell into a neutral expression. I was perplexed for a moment. What made him suddenly stoic?
Then it hit me. My stomach dropped to the floor.
“Oh.”
I averted my gaze from him and concentrated on the plain wall ahead. I breathed evenly, working to process the confession I'd just heard.
“I wasn’t planning on telling you like this Y/N.”
“How long?”
“Um-like, a long time.”
“Is that the reason why you wanted me in your hotel room tonight?”
Enzo was deafeningly silent. The traffic continued to move, and the city continued to live around us. Despite being trapped in the middle of a life-changing experience, the world did not come to a halt.
“Uh-Well…”
His voice trailed off into the heavy night air.
“Yes.”
I sighed.
Although the possibility of him luring me into his room solely for the possibility of sex should be upsetting, I couldn’t grow angry.
“I really want to be mad. I really do. But… I can’t.”
I knew him better than anyone. I knew exactly where his heart was at this precise moment. I also knew exactly where my own heart was, and I knew they were both in the same place. I swiveled my head to face him, catching his eager gaze before lowering my eyes to my engagement ring.
The sight of it made me sick.
I slid it off my finger in one fluid motion and slammed it down onto the glass coffee table in a rather dramatic fashion.
Then I twisted my body around to face Enzo. His posture was flawless. He was tense, anticipating my next move. My gaze was drawn to his plush lips before returning to meet his anxious eyes.
I cut to the chase. I reached forward, clenching my fist around his collar and pulling him into me. He received the message and pressed his surprisingly soft lips against mine. On his hot skin, the scent of turf and sweat lingered.
I was expecting this moment to be tense or astounding, but it just felt… right. It was peaceful and serene. This was meant to happen, in this place, at this time, with this person.
After a brief moment of hesitation, Enzo allowed his hands to crawl towards my waist. His body melted into the kiss, his mouth moving in impeccable unison with mine.
My opposite hand brushed through the short hairs on the nape of his neck. Enzo groaned, and the vibrations echoed down my throat.
“Enzo.”
I whispered, already breathless with love.
“Yes?”
He inquired, hurriedly reconnecting the kiss despite knowing I had more to say.
I drew back, softly smiling as I noticed the prominent blush on his face. His lips were swollen from the passionate kiss, and his pupils were blown with lust.
“Fuck me like you mean it.”
I said, demanding he follow my orders.
“Yes ma’am.”
He remarked lightheartedly. As he began kissing me without hesitation, I could feel the prominent smirk on his face. Enzo’s tongue soon slipped between my lips. My eyes fluttered shut, and I allowed my mouth to move in response to his.
Enzo hoisted me atop his lap with ease. I groaned as his growing bulge brushed against my hot core. My nails raked along his scalp, eliciting a low groan from deep within his throat.
“Oh Jesus baby.”
Enzo mumbled erotically, breaking the kiss to trail his wet mouth down my jugular.
“You have no clue how much I’ve thought about this.”
He placed fiery hot kisses along my cool skin. I sighed softly, muscles relaxing as he located my sweet spot. My lower abdomen was already buzzing with a gentle hum of pleasure.
“God, I’ve wanted you for so long.”
Enzo dipped his hands under the hem of my shirt, teasing the skin above my waistband with his thumbs. Despite his warm hands, the featherlight touches caused goosebumps to appear on my skin.
“I get so hot when I think about fucking you. You have no idea.”
The mere image of Enzo with his hand far past his waistband made my cunt throb with desire. I pictured him softly groaning my name while thrusting his hips into his calloused palm. He would try not to cum too quickly, but the image of me wrapped around his cock would be far too sweet to deny.
“My hand can only do so much.”
Shit. My suspicions were confirmed.
“Take me to the bedroom, Enzo.”
I begged, my tone breathless with lust. Enzo pulled back, his calloused hands trailing downwards to grasp my soft thighs. A faint smirk was visible on his swollen lips.
“Yes ma’am.”
He stood, lifting me effortlessly. I wrapped my arms around his shoulders and my legs around his waist. Our faces were in close proximity due to my firm grip on his body. I reconnected our fiery kiss, confident that Enzo could decipher his way to the bedroom completely blind.
Fortunately, I was correct. I was so engrossed in the sensation of his tongue flowing in perfect unison with mine that I didn't perceive we were in the bedroom until my back collided with the mattress.
My body weight did not cause the springs to groan. They didn't want to disrupt our passionate connection. Enzo hovered above me, his kisses intensifying now that he had me where he wanted me. I, like him, quickly became breathless. The collective gasps as we struggled to refill our spent lungs were like music to my ears.
My hands dipped beneath the hem of his shirt. Enzo’s abdomen rippled under my soft fingertips. I moved upwards, caressing every inch of his perfectly sculpted chest before breaking the kiss momentarily to throw the jersey over his head. I threw it to the floor, out of sight, out of mind.
Enzo hastily followed suit. He grasped the hem of my shirt and threw it to the ground, swiftly reigniting the spark between our mouths. He was clearly not as patient as I was. I arched my back as a silent indication to remove my bra. The message was delivered. Enzo reached behind me and unclipped my bra in a singular fluid motion.
I shrugged off the straps and discarded the piece of fabric. Enzo pulled back, his hungry eyes drinking in my bare torso. I quickly grew hot under his gaze. My face flushed and my core grew wet.
“So pretty.”
Enzo muttered, his tongue trailing along his lower lip. He was studying every inch of my chest, carving every minute detail into his brain so he could possess a mental image of me laid out for him.
He pressed his wet mouth to the valley of my breasts, beginning his gradual descent to the area which I desired him most.
“You’re gorgeous, you know that?”
My stomach fluttered. Enzo placed hot, open mouthed kisses along my skin. The saliva he left in his wake was hit by a cool draft, sending chills down my spine.
“I can’t believe that asshole got to see this before I did.”
The erotic tone had returned. His hands found my breasts, and began to knead the soft flesh. I groaned in pleasure, my eyes fluttering shut.
Enzo’s knee bumped my clothed core. I convulsed, involuntarily rolling my hips along his thigh, desperate for friction.
He chuckled against my breastbone.
“Jesus baby, you’re so worked up and I’ve barely touched you. I can’t wait to see what you do when I fuck you.”
In response, all I could manage was a groan. I tangled my fingers in his hair, my eyes opening to perceive his movements along my stomach. While his lips trailed downwards, Enzo continued to knead my breasts. His movements came to a sudden halt when he reached the waistband of my jeans.
I could feel the uncomfortable pool between my thighs. I was growing antsy, desperate for him to make me cum. Fortunately, it appeared Enzo was growing impatient as well. He removed his hands from my chest, hastily unbuttoning my jeans and tugging them down my legs. I kicked them to the floor, shortening the process. My panties soon found the floor along with the rest of my clothing.
Enzo nestled between my spread thighs, his large hands caressing the soft flesh. I grew impatient as he refused to give me what I truly desired. Instead, he resorted to placing tender kisses along my inner thighs, being cautious to keep his distance from my aching cunt. Typically I appreciate sensuality, but after a long hiatus from erotic pleasure, I was sexually frustrated.
I tugged on his roots, urging him to move towards my core. Enzo smirked against my thigh.
“Jesus baby, you’re impatient. How often does he touch you?”
He glanced at me through his lashes. I grit my teeth, not wanting to provide him with an answer. Enzo scoffed.
“That’s pitiful. If you were mine I’d touch you all the goddamn time.”
His movements looked promising. He was now slowly inching towards my core, presumably with no intent of stopping.
“You’d be so full of my cock.”
My entire lower half was throbbing with desire. The anticipation was coursing through my body in waves. God, how I wished he’d just hurry up and eat me out.
“I’d fuck you so good every single day. God you wouldn’t be able to go two minutes without thinking of me inside you.”
That sure as hell sounded like a good life. Unfortunately, it appeared that he wanted to further prolong my suffering.
“Enzo,” I begged, “please, I’m aching.”
“Sorry baby, that was rude of me.”
I was about to roll my eyes, but a sudden wave of pleasure halted my movements. Enzo’s warm mouth enveloped my clit. My back arched off the bed. I tightened my grip in his hair, tugging a few loose strands from the roots.
“You’re so wet for me baby.”
He murmured, the vibrations reverberating throughout my cunt. I moaned loudly, crushing his head between my thighs. Enzo’s movements didn’t falter. He was precise and intense. Each flick of my clit was carefully placed and timed in order to give me the most intense pleasure possible.
I was soon reduced to a moaning mess. I was panting, my head thrown back and my jaw on the floor. I couldn’t prevent the whimpers and groans that passed over my plush lips.
“Your moans are so pretty.”
Enzo rolled his hips against the mattress, searching for friction to somewhat dampen the ache pumping through his painfully hard erection.
“Keep moaning, just like that, let the whole world know how good I make you feel.”
Two fingers prodded at my entrance. Moments later, when his long digits pushed into me, I swore I saw stars. He began a steady pace with his fingers, fondling my g spot with every thrust.
I bit back the impending orgasm, trying to ignore the tightness in my lower abdomen. I wanted to preserve this glorious feeling. To my surprise, Enzo slowed down. I groaned from the lack of stimulation.
“Keep moaning baby. I wanna hear how good I make you feel.”
I gulped, a large lump forming in my throat.
“I’m not gonna last much longer.”
Only when I spoke did I realize how pitiful and breathless I sounded.
“I don’t care.”
Enzo resumed his pace, this time, with tenfold the intensity as before. I obeyed his command, and didn’t hold back. Every sound that crept up my throat was released into the still night air.
I was close, so painfully close. The wet sound of his fingers fucking me along with the slurping was truly erotic. The coil was pulled tight, and would release with the tiniest of pushes.
Enzo could tell I was teetering on the verge of an orgasm.
“Cum all over my fingers pretty girl.”
I came undone. My entire body convulsed. The walls of my cunt clenched around Enzo’s thick fingers. I was lifted into a world of pure euphoria. If it wasn’t for the soft pumping of Enzo’s fingers, I would’ve sworn I went straight to heaven.
I loosened my death grip on his roots, stretching my cramped fingers as Enzo relished in the taste of my juices.
“You taste so good.”
He said softly.
Jesus. I wasn’t even done with my first orgasm and I was already growing impatient for the next one.
Enzo climbed over me once he was satisfied, nestling between my shaky legs. His lips were wet, yet I wasted no time in reconnecting our hungry mouths. I could taste myself on his tongue.
I dragged my open palms down his chest, gathering sweat beads as I went. I eventually reached his waistband. Fortunately, the band was stretchy, allowing me to easily dip my hand into his shorts and cup his painfully hard erection.
Enzo groaned, resisting the urge to buck his hips into my warm hand.
“Hurry up and take those off baby.”
I hooked my finger into the waistbands of both his boxers and shorts. Then I began pulling them down his thighs. I pushed them down as far as I could, and when I couldn't reach, Enzo took charge. He stripped the remainder of his clothing, leaving him bare.
Enzo pressed his body against mine, leaving little room to breathe comfortably. I made no complaint. I was already breathless from his dizzying kiss, and the comforting sensation of his body weight resting atop me made my stomach flutter. He was incredibly warm, and the prominent heat blossoming from his erection contributed to the steady thrum of pleasure building within my stomach.
Enzo rocked his pelvis forward, the swollen tip of his cock prodding at my entrance. I whimpered against his mouth, the messy kiss swallowing my noises.
“Enzo-“
“I know baby, I’ll fuck you.”
He reached between our bodies, lining his cock up with my entrance. Enzo rolled his pelvis forward, burying himself deep within me. The wetness of my cunt made it easy for him to stretch my walls to the absolute brim. I broke the kiss, throwing my head back and squeezing my eyes shut as he bottomed out.
“Jesus Enzo, you’re really fucking big.”
I shuddered. Enzo gave me a moment to adjust, placing hot kisses to my neck as he waited for my body to relax. After a sufficient period of time, Enzo began rolling his hips, beginning a steady rhythm.
“Good girl, you’re taking my cock so well.”
I whimpered, the dull pain of his thick length slowly transforming into pleasure. Enzo nestled his face into the crook of my neck, his hot breath cascading across my skin.
“Oh fuck baby, you feel so good. So nice and tight.”
His erotic tone was punctuated by deep breaths. The sensation of my wet cunt wrapped around his thick cock was far too wonderful to deny.
“Faster, please.”
“Yes ma’am.”
Enzo began to increase his pace, the tip of his cock brushing against my cervix. I shuddered as I dug my nails into his strong back, breaking the skin. Enzo let out a guttural groan.
“Sorry.”
I mumbled.
“Don’t be, I like it.”
Enzo grasped my thigh and hooked a leg around his waist. The new position provided the perfect angle for his cock to slam into my g spot with each thrust. His lower abdomen brushed against my clit and allowed for the perfect amount of delicious stimulation to pair with the rigorous snap of his pelvis.
“Who can make you feel this good?”
He murmured. I stared blankly at the plain ceiling, my mind trapped in a foggy daze. My muscles completely relaxed, my body succumbing to the effects of the pleasure.
“You.”
“What was that?”
He pulled back, igniting a moment of intense eye contact as he fucked me into the matress. I cupped his cheek, pulling his face forward to reestablish contact between our lips. It was a heated mess of tongue and clashing teeth.
“You, only you.”
I whispered against his lips, mustering all of the remaining self-control I had to make my voice as clear as possible.
The coil within my lower abdomen was pulling tight. I could feel the delicious release seeping into the corners of my brain.
“Enzo, I’m gonna cum.”
Enzo drew back, our noses brushing against each other as he maintained the rigorous pace of his hips.
“Look at me, I wanna see your face as you cum all over my cock.”
Enzo released my thigh and brought his hand upwards to gently cup my face. The gentle touch of his calloused fingertips provided yet another area of stimulation. I kept my face still and my eyes open, allowing any expression to waft over my features.
“Shit! Enzo!”
I encircled his neck with my arms, holding him impossibly closer as the coil within my snapped. I came undone, my walls clenching around his cock as I was immersed into a pool of pure euphoria. I moaned pornographically, unable to resist the temptation to squeeze my eyes shut. Enzo didn’t seem to mind. His cock twitched within me as I came, indicating that he was also close to reaching his orgasm.
Jesus, I feel bad for the other guests who came to this hotel hoping for a quiet night full of restful sleep. Our combined moans were enough to rock the walls.
“Shit Y/N.”
Enzo muttered, his head collapsing into the crook of my neck as he coated my walls with his hot cum. He mumbled my name like a prayer while he continued to roll his hips. His soft cock gradually brought me down from the freight train of an orgasm I just experienced.
Enzo came to a complete stop after we had both caught our breath. He collapsed atop me, and I ran my fingers through his sweaty hair. I cocked my head to the side, taking in the glimmer of the city lights through the enormous window.
“What now?”
He inquired meekly, his face nestled comfortably against my neck. I dragged my hand down his back, tenderly rubbing his sweaty skin. Only after the filter of pleasure was removed did I notice he still smelled like an intense fútbol match. And although I knew his question hinted at something more serious. I responded with what should happen next at that precise moment as opposed to worrying about the inevitable problems that I would be forced to address once I touched down in America.
“I think you need a shower now.”
I said, a smile on my face. Enzo chuckled.
“Wanna join me?”

Note
I love your work and fics but because of your support of the genocide in Gaza Strip I am unable to truly continue supporting you.
I know that you believe that supporting the Palestinians is anti-semitic but if you learned about these topics you would know. Zionism is inherently anti-semitic itself, Zionism is a political philosophy that was first created in the 1600s by anti-Semitic Christians who believed Jews from all over the world should be expelled and gathered in one place. And then Theodor Herzl, an atheist, adopted Zionism to find a "suitable country" to colonize, and several countries were suggested: Uganda, Argentina, Cyprus, and Madagascar. But with Jews' rejection and with the support of Western politicians, Zionism secured their interests in the resources of the Middle East, thus Palestine.
Maybe if you learned what it was like to see through the eyes of people like Bisan Owda, Wael Al-Dahdouh, Motaz Azaiza, Hind Khoudary, or maybe even the six year old Hind Rajab who died after traveling through a "Safe Zone" with her family and being stuck in a car with their bodies for 12 days.
This is not a war. This is a genocide. I'm not asking you to change overnight, but knowing the full truth of what Israel is doing under the same excuses that you're telling yourself will help you understand what's really going on.
Thanks for the compliment? I think?
Uh, ok, this isn't about my writing - this is about you complaining about my thoughts and experiences. Cool.
Edit: I have to admit that I'm curious what brought this up. Was it the A/N in "Some of Them (want you)" (a Damian-centric fic), and the mention of the bombed hospital in Israel? Raising awareness to the facts refugees need to bribe their way into Egypt to save their lives? (From Sudan and Gaza)? Was it the mention of the war in Kurdistan? Or maybe it was the way I talked about the Iranian regime, and how Baluchistan and Akhwaz are a flame?
Or perhaps it was the PSA in "Who am I? (to disappear)", in which I tried to remind ppl that watching and passing forward videos of ppl being tortured/killed/sexually assaulted is a bad thing. Do you not agree with the sentiment?
Or maybe you just don't like Cass. That's probably another option
Anyway -
Support genocide etc.
A. I do not support genocide.
B. What's happening in Gaza rn isn't genocide. It's war. And the use of that term is very disrespectful and dismissive to other places, in which there IS, actually, a genocide.
C. That being said, I don't support war. I don't support death. And I really wish this wouldn't happen.
I Don't??? Think?? Supporting Palestine is antisemic???
I do think that pro-palestine rallies with chants like "Gas the Jews" and harrasing jews and Jewish place ARE antisemic, yes.
If you need that difference explicitly said, I guess you should look at the rallies and pro-p things you're talking about.
"But if you learned about these topics"
EXCUSE ME????
If I LEARNT ABOUT IT?
Because of course - my knowledge, as part of a minority group, of a subject that is INHERENTLY related to in-group topics, and the what I learnt from people in-group are obviously less relevant than what you, oh great saviour, has learnt through Tik-Tok.
"Zionism is inherently anti-semitic itself"
Do you even understand how ignorant saying that is??
Do you understand how much this is propaganda?
"I believe that (Jewish people right to self-determination and live peacefully) is a bad thing" - do you even hear yourself??
"Zionism.... was first created in the 1600s by anti-Semitic Christians who believed Jews from all over the world should be expelled and gathered in one place. "
No. Just don't.
Idk - maybe this is what they teach in America or idk where, right next to "jews, Muslims and Christians lived peacefully before the evil Zionists colonisers " (look up the massacres in Zfad, the massacre and ethnic cleansing of Habron, Gush Etzion, Gaza-several cleansing btw).
Anyway, Zionism in the older form (yearning to go back Home, Eretz Israel as the Jewish homeland, and a connection between God-People-Land) is one of the first things in the Jewish narrative.
Practically, the Jewish calander is SoLunal calander that based on the seasons, weather, and agriculture in the levant.
Religiously - jews prayed to go back to "build Jerusalem" every year since the 2nd temple was destroyed. We kept practicing traditions and Mitzvahs that are related to the connection to the spesific area.
(And there always, always been jews going to Israel.)
Herzel's thoughts and actions to create the Zionist movement came after he watched the Dreyfus trial and realised that jews will always be haunted and discriminated BECAUSE of their Jewishness. So if you want a place without this, you gotta make a Jewish state.   (There are many kinds of Zionism,  I go with this as a general and simple explanation.)
(more about why this is problematic undercut)
"You don't know what it's like" -
What. The. Fuck.
You said you came here via my fics.
I'm sorry.
Did you miss the whole long AF a/n I wrote in the last months??
About my personal experiences with war??
Both current (the whole saga with physical/mental safety, the evacuation, losing my glasses, etc. ??)
And previous (being bombed and evacuation 1 as a kid. My first PTSD. Terror attack and PTSD number 2 (ft. dead babies. Fun times). Rockets, more rockets, war, friends hurt in terror attack, friends-of-friends DIE in terror attack, more wars, etc.
(And that's not even the reason I was suicidal since young teen).
"This isn't war, it's genocide"
I'm sorry, do you remember how it fucking started?? How it continues?? How there are still FUCKING ROCKETS AIMED AT Israel??
Yes. This is sad. People shouldn't die in war.
In fact, I truly believe that death-machines and people should not be near each other.
**Which is why I'm so mad at the fact non one's talking or doing anything to make Egypt open the fucking borders and let ppl through without having to bribe their life out**
" the full truth of what Israel is doing"
Right.
You, who's purely immune to Propaganda, of course.
You sure knows much more then me - who, you know, the one who ACTUALLY LIVE THROUGH this, and actually familiar with the history of the country and conflict (no, it didn't start in 1948. Not even in 1918. It was way earlier.)
(And just as you mention - have you heard about Ellin (9) and  Eithan (5) Kapshiter? They were shoot in the car with their entire family.
Ellin was considered missing for 2 weeks, before her body was identified. That was a couple of hours after her family's funeral.
For some reason, I didn't see any "where's Ellin?" On Tumblr.
Oh, and do you remember Kfir and Ariel Bibas? Kfir just had his first birthday.
They are still held captive, btw. For some reason, I don't see anyone in the "ceasefire now" crowd talking about how CRUCIAL it is that Hamas bring back the people they, you know, kidnapped. That they should get medical attention and visits from the RC.
In fact, in the last hostage deal, this was something Hamas refused to include.)
Calling it genocide is problematic in many ways. Including for the people who suffer from this war.
Calling it genocide allows the the activism to be mostly anti-Israel, instead of pro-palestine.
For example, focusing the efforts on "stopping Israel" and "Israel is bad" and "boycott Israel", instead of "how do we save lives" and "why Egypt not opening the borders".
Less "ceasefire now!" (Though a good target) And "defund Israel!"
More "release the hostages and let humanitarian aid in".
(not to mention that all those efforts, for some reason, never go to other places and other people who suffer. Never even go to Palestinian in refugees camps - in Jordan, Lebanon, Syria.)
Pro-tip:
If someone tells you "a (very important thing in a minority's group culture) was actually created by (A majority group) as a (bad thing)", then you have one of those options: It's a lie, reclaiming, and "yes but no" .
1. It's a lie - aka: Just bc you didn't know about it, doesn't mean it's not real. (Sort of like the term of "dark ages" - that come to portray the intellectual darkness in Europe between the fall of Rome and the Renaissance. Though it wasn't the same if you look at non-european history.)
And in a simpler example-  Pasta! Usually considered "Italian", but only got there at 4th century BC. Evidences in China during the Shang Dynasty (1700-1100 BC). There was also African form of pasta, made of kamut crop.
2. Reclaiming (see "queer" - was used as a general term, then a slur, going back to an Identity.)
3. Yes, but actually no (take for example sign language (s) - languages, as community languages, started to form when schools-for-deaf became a thing. Residential schools, where the students lived together and worked together ehad to learn to communicate.
Then they learn sign language - of the area/country/etc.
It doesn't mean that "Hearing created SL". The languages were built from home-signs (look at the difference between simple words, like "eat" in different SLs - like brit vs. Japanese) , and gained depth through the creation of Deaf communities.

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce Are 'All In' and He Plans to Visit Her on Eras International Tour (Exclusive)
The NFL star is planning to visit Swift on the international leg of her Eras Tour, a source tells ET.
Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift's romance is reaching new heights as the NFL star is planning to be by her side when she starts her international tour dates, scheduled to kick off in November.
A source tells ET the duo is fully committed to their relationship and the future.
"Travis and Taylor are all in. The two are very into each other and are enjoying their time together but are also planning for the future. Taylor starts her international tour in November, and Travis is planning to be there to spend time with her," the source says. "Travis and Taylor are very serious about their careers, and the two bond over that and want to show support for each other whenever they can."
During week 10 of the NFL season, Travis and the Kansas City Chiefs enjoy a bye week, providing him with a brief respite. Coincidentally, during this very week, Taylor is set to take the stage for three consecutive nights in Buenos Aires, Argentina, from Nov. 9 to 11, marking her debut international Era Tour performances. This fortunate scheduling overlap grants Travis the opportunity to be in attendance.
In the midst of their whirlwind romance, Travis is taking proactive measures to safeguard his privacy. ET has learned Travis recently purchased a new home, something he has been wanting to do for a long time. His current house was easily accessible to the public, which is no longer feasible given the onslaught of attention he's received.
This news comes after Jenna Bush Hager fueled rumors that the new couple might be buying a house together in Kansas City, Missouri, where the Chiefs tight end lives.
On Monday, the Today show host excitedly claimed in a viral clip that "a friend" shared that the couple might be "buying a house."
Hager was quick to caution viewers that the claim was merely a rumor and "not confirmed by NBC News." ET later learned that the rumor wasn't true -- however, it may have been fueled by Travis' solo house hunt.
Despite his increased privacy -- understandable, given that there were plenty of photos of his house and neighborhood published after Taylor met his family there before attending her first Chiefs game back in September -- Travis has said he's loving every second of his high-profile romance with the pop superstar.
"I embrace it," the Super Bowl-winning tight end said in an interview with Taylor Rooks prior to last week's Thursday Night Football broadcast. "I love the chaos. Knowing everybody is looking at the Kansas City Chiefs, and then you add in all the madness that's happening out here in the world, and it's a whole bunch of fun for me right now."
On this week's new episode of his New Heights podcast with brother Jason, Travis also addressed the viral videos of him helping Taylor from the car on a recent date night, admitting that he does feel "protective" of the singer when they're out together.
"I feel like whenever I'm on a date, I'm always having the sense that I'm a man in the situation," he shared. "I'm protective, yeah, for sure. You always have to have that feeling or self-awareness, I guess."

rhythm heaven headcanons because im more sad than i should-
but first of all i have an announcement. and its that today, august 18th in argentina, its children's day and as im 16 im still technically a child to i asked my mom to get me something very specific as a gift. so, in a few weeks or months, dj yellow plushie is coming home! i wanted both yellow and blue, but she could only pay for one, so i chose yellow. hes gonna be with me in conventions from now on, either being tied up on the table so people buy me stuff to free him (/lh), or being my cosplay pal. thats all. if you wanna follow the dj yellow plushie adventures, follow me on instagram berry_lemon_arty, and if you cant find it, try with watashime_vkipper. its the same acc, but im changing the user soon to watashime_vkipper when i go back to my showroom. ANYWAYS lets go with the headcanons (and idc if i repeat some from past posts, i cant remember what i said)
-J.J is someone very insecure, actually. and lets out his anger on others (ahem, Yellow). but when he met Cecil, things changed a bit. Cecil allowed him to be angry, sad, disappointed, and make questions that were a call for reassurance
-Yellow has worked restlessly to buy a ticket to see Kikuo, no matter if he was in another country. and he never could- something happens everytime hes going to buy a ticket, and the money goes somewhere else. he cried for days because of that (reference to Kikuo just leaving argentina in this instant, although im not a fan lol)
-Cecil is also a germaphobic, but not as much(?) as Blue is. Cecil can at least touch whatever is contaminated to throw it away or clean it, whilst Blue cant because he feels like hes gonna pass out
-Yellow has been more time in a mental hospital than in school.🧍
-for a time, Blue was convinced he only signed up to Yellow's dj classes because he fell in love with him at first sight. it was during the time he was unsure how to express himself
-remember that Yellow's spirit animal is Len Kagamine? but its also Angel Dust, and possibly Spinel for how flexible he is. breakdancing? he can do it. pole dancing? he can do it. parkour? he can do it. lyra dancing? he can do it. dance trapeze? guess what. HE CAN DO IT. has he ever broken a bone or something? surprisingly, no. the only time he did was his right ankle at a comic con, participating on the cosplay contest as Kokoro Tsurumaki dancing Egao Sing A Song. Kokoro uses heels, and he loves them, and knows how to dance and do acrobatics with them. but he jumped and didnt get down very well, breaking his right ankle, but finishing the performance like nothing and winning the best performance prize. he only felt the pain once he sat down, but he did feel something wrong after not getting down properly
-you cant use your fingers to count the amount of times Blue got back home from work and saw Yellow in a female cosplay. and you cant also count the different reactions he had. dont use your imagination that much.
-Cecil is obsessed with Final Fantasy (a reference to Soushi)
-J.J may or may not accidentaly call acoustic guitars, "autistic guitars". most of the times he doesnt notices that
-whenever Cecil went to J.J's house (to his parents', actually), J.J's mom would do that classic "mom-embarassing-son" conversation thing. that way Cecil found out stuff about J.J that he couldnt even imagine lol

chapter two — moscow mule
➝ after two intense days, fernando decides to take his racing team to a tapas bar. charlie considers staying at the hotel, but something tells her that if she doesn't go, she might seem unfriendly. little does she know that that night will show her a completely different side of fernando.
➝ word count: 5,9k
➝ warnings: mentions of sexual harrassment, therapy session
➝ author's note: yeah, it will be a chapter a day around here. tagging @christianpulisic10 and @alonsogirlie as requested. enjoy!
Charlie felt a little uncomfortable as she followed after her colleagues down the cobbled street. It wasn't that she was the only woman in the group, or that they were going out drinking on a Tuesday; it was because of who made the plans to go out to a bar in Jerez de la Frontera.
Fernando's invitation didn't surprise Charlie, given his attitude lately. Fernando, even beyond treating her with more respect than in their McLaren-Honda days, seemed interested in developing some kind of friendship with her. At first, she thought he was teasing her, the way he asked her so many questions. That is, until the previous Thursday.
She was in her office at the factory, sitting at her workstation, drinking a cup of lemon ginger tea, and watching an onboard video of Fernando in Bahrain when she heard Fernando’s voice down the hallway. Charlie knew that he was coming over to the factory almost every day at that point for video and photo shoots for the marketing department, and for simulator sessions.
Turning her eyes back to the screen, which showed Fernando making a wide line to avoid the raised curb at the apex of turn eight, Charlie took another sip of tea as she tried to ignore his approach.
— Hi, Charlie — he greeted her, leaning against the wall of her cubicle. His hair looked damp and was sticking up at strange angles. “He must have been in the simulator”, Charlie thought.
— Hi — she murmured, pulling her headphones down to hang around her neck.
— What are you watching there?
— Your race in Bahrain last year — Charlie said, setting her teacup down on the desk. He crouched down beside her, one arm resting on her desk.
— Cute cat — Fernando said. It took her by surprise, and she glanced over to him. His eyes were fixed on the photo of Ron that was pinned just below her race season calendar — I had one, once.
Charlie raised an eyebrow.
— You did?
— Yes, her name was Cleo. Linda liked cats and wanted one to keep her company.
— What happened? Did she die?
— Linda?
— Of course not, I'm talking about the cat.
— No, no, she's doing very well. She’s with Linda in — he paused for a few seconds — Argentina, I guess. Linda took her after we broke up.
There was a moment of awkward silence between them.
— Do you miss her?
— Linda?
Charlie shot a sidelong glance at Fernando, making it obvious she didn’t care about his ex-girlfriend.
— Oh, Cleo. Well, a little, but deep down, I've always preferred dogs. More active, you know.
— Yeah.
There was another moment of awkward silence as Fernando continued gazing at the photo of the orange cat. Through Charlie’s headphones, the sound of the Renault engine drowned out the other conversations across the office.
— What's its name? — Fernando finally broke the silence.
— Its name?
— Your cat. What's its name?
Charlie pursed her lips, realizing what he was trying to do. He was trying to get close to her, create some camaraderie, or worse, strike up some sort of friendship. “This is just a dirty trick”, she thought, shifting in her chair.
— It doesn’t matter — she replied, dryly.
— But I told you about my cat.
— You mean your ex-girlfriend's cat, right?
— We adopted her together, so she was my cat too.
Charlie sighed, running a hand over her face before looking up at him again.
— Look, I was over here preparing your first race of the season, and you came over here bothering me about my cat. If you don't have any input on racing in Bahrain, I strongly recommend you go find someone else to bother.
— I just asked you your cat's name...
— And I can only imagine what you want with that, so please go bother the IT guys and let me get back to work.
Fernando sighed and stood up. He was staring at the cubicle wall again, but at a different point than before.
— Will you at least tell me your father's name? — he asked, pointing to the photo of her next to a man tinkering with a dismantled engine sitting on a table
— His name is Jamie. And he is not my father.
— No?
— He’s my grandfather. Now, go away.
Fernando pursed his lips and turned around, mumbling “have a nice day” as he left. Charlie put her headphones back on and tried to concentrate on the video she’d been watching again. However, her coldness did not cause Fernando to give up, quite the contrary. It seemed that Charlie's reluctance to interact with him made him try even harder to get closer to her, to breach the walls she’d put up for him. Little did Charlie know that he would eventually succeed.
It happened on a two-day trip to Jerez, Spain, for annual tyre testing for Pirelli. Fernando had taken the entirety of the first day of testing, while Lance would take the second. It was tiring to spend a whole day at the circuit, but Charlie thought it was better than alternating half-days like Mercedes had planned to.
— Fernando — Charlie called, waving him over to the pit wall. He was talking to Edoardo, one of his physiotherapists, and made a gesture with his hand that looked like a phone back to him as he walked over the pit lane. He tied the sleeves of his green race overalls around his waist, leaving his white fireproof undershirt visible. Charlie couldn’t help but notice the way it was sticking to his skin.
— Yeah? — he asked, causing Charlie to notice where her eyes were. She swallowed hard and scrambled to remember what she wanted to talk to him about, blurting out a question instead.
— Are there any problems?
He smiled.
— Well, my sister said she would be here to watch testing, but she missed her flight, so we were trying to get her re-booked to try and get her here this afternoon.
Charlie nodded, looking again at the computer screen in front of her, trying to find the telemetry that she remembered that she wanted to discuss with him. However, Fernando had other ideas.
— Do you have siblings?
— In theory — she muttered.
— What do you mean, ‘in theory’?
Charlie sighed and rolled her eyes.
— I have two younger brothers, but I think I've seen them two or three times in my entire life, so…
— You were raised by your grandparents.
Charlie glanced at him, a bit startled by how he’d deduced that.
— How did you know that? — she asked quietly.
— It was more of a guess, since you have a picture with your grandfather in the office — he said, leaning his elbow on the pit wall’s rail — What about your father?
— I don’t know who he is — Charlie replied.
— But, how? — he asked. He sounded almost indignant at the idea — Your mother…
— My mother never told me who my father is, as she said that she doesn't like to “remember the mistakes of her youth” — she said, trying to tamp down the irritation in her voice — Now we can concentrate on your telemetry and not about who fucked my mother?
Fernando smiled like he was trying to stifle a giggle.
— As you wish — he said, resting his hand on his hip and turning his attention to the screen.
The day of testing seemed endless, with Pirelli technicians insisting that they test all available compounds and asking for feedback on their performance. The fact that Fernando was also in the process of adapting to the car didn't make Charlie's task any easier, because he also wanted feedback on the times he was doing and where he could improve his lap times.
However, after 130 laps and a rather uncomfortable journey back to the hotel, she was excited to have a shower, lie in bed, and read the book she had brought with her — an autobiography of an actress who discussed the relationship with her mother. It had been a suggestion from Hannah, her therapist, as a way for them to begin exploring issues surrounding Charlie's upbringing, and from what she'd read on the flight to Jerez, it was a very good place to start.
However, Fernando thought it would be a good idea to take the team to an authentic Spanish bar as a way for him to get to know everyone better. And, if she knew her colleagues, they would never turn down a chance to relax and drink, especially with a two-time Formula 1 world champion picking up the tab.
— And you, Charlie? — the driver asked, smiling — Are you coming with us?
— No, thank you.
— Why not?
— I just think there are better ways to enjoy my night than watching you get drunk with your mechanics and having to drag you back to your hotel at the end of the night.
He laughed.
— First, it's Checo who likes to get drunk, not me. But I understand the confusion, since we both speak Spanish and for you Brits, we are all the same.
Charlie opened her mouth to protest, but Fernando continued.
— Second, I'm pretty sure I don't need anyone to drag me back to the hotel unless they have a very good reason to. And finally, it seems like you need to relax. This is your chance.
— I'm fine, thanks — she murmured, looking out the window of the briefing room, crossing her arms.
— I can see that — he said. He clearly wasn’t convinced — We’ll meet in the lobby at eight.
As the group walked through the streets, following Fernando, Charlie ruminated on the fact that the driver seemed to know that she would change her mind and join the group in the hotel lobby. She’d prepared a lame excuse, and could feel her cheeks flush with embarrassment, but to Fernando’s credit, he didn’t rub it in her face. All he said was that he was grateful that he had his entire team there.
The procession squeezed its way down narrow streets, everyone chatting and laughing as they walked. Charlie condemned herself for not bringing a jacket or jumper, feeling chilled in the late February air. Thankfully, it wasn’t long before Fernando led the group to a dark wooden door, opening it to let everyone else in ahead of him. Charlie glanced at the sign affixed to the wood as she stepped inside.
— Tabanco La Pandilla — she said softly. The scent of sweet wine and something that reminded her of the ocean filled her nostrils, and the interior of the bar reminded Charlie strongly of typical English pubs, though with undoubtedly Spanish features in the architecture and the decor. The walls were covered in vintage posters for bullfights and black and white photos from around Jerez, elegant handwriting in the corners of them indicating the place and date they were taken.
— Charlie — someone called out. She looked away from the photo she was poring over and she saw Raúl sitting in a corner — Come sit here.
As she approached the table, she realized that there weren’t many vacant chairs to choose from, since Mikey and the mechanics were already occupying most of them. Almost all of them, apparently, as she had chosen the one that Jimmy, the team’s social media admin, had already claimed.
— That one is free — the mechanic said, pointing to the sole remaining empty chair.
It was the one right next to Fernando.
Heaving a sigh, she made her way over to the chair, settling down silently with a serious expression on her face. Charlie could feel Fernando’s eyes on her, which made her feel unsettled. She pulled her cell phone from her purse and looked at it in an effort to distract herself.
— You know it's not very polite to be on your cell phone when you're out with friends, right? — a male voice murmured beside her. When he looked up, he found Fernando with a small smile on his face.
— I was checking the time.
— Do you have other plans later on?
— What if I do? — Charlie asked.
— I'm happy to keep an eye on the time so you can enjoy your evening — he replied, holding up his left wrist. He showed her the royal blue watch he was wearing, with a large square face, outlined in yellow. Inside, there were three bands in red, yellow and blue, which were the base of the hands, while all the black and silver internal gears were visible behind the face.
— A Richard Mille? — she asked. She would recognize his watches anywhere. When she was with McLaren, the brand signed a sponsorship deal with the team. It obliged all of the trackside staff to wear the watches given by them, a special model with the orange strap and black dial.
— Yes, RM 67-02 — Fernando said with a smile — Richard designed it exclusively for me, based on the colors of my helmet. We even partnered up last year and developed one based on the armor worn by the Samurai…
— It's awful — Charlie said, dryly, cutting him off.
— What? — he said, shocked.
— Let's face it, Richard Milles are terrible watches. They’re over-the-top, you can hardly read the dials, they’re huge and heavy on your wrist, and a lot of them look like children’s toys anyway, which, considering how expensive they are... They’re all flash and no substance.
— I'm sorry, but I'm going to have to disagree with you...
— As always — she murmured.
— Richard's designs are well thought out and not at all cluttered, plus the colors are really nice and the size seems ideal to me.
— You never had to wear that awful watch he made for McLaren — Charlie replied.
— Of course I did. We all got one of those in 2017, don't you remember?
She was about to respond when one of the owners of the place approached the table. He was a middle-aged man with graying hair and a wide, excited smile on his face.
— ¡Bienvenidos a nuestro tabanco! ¡Es un honor recibirlos aquí! — the man said. Fernando smiled at him politely.
Raúl translated for the man — the owner, apparently — and everyone started to place their orders. After taking orders for a variety of beers and a shot or two of the famous Andalusian sherry, the man glanced at her.
— Y la señorita, ¿qué desea?
— He wants to know what you want — Fernando said.
Looking up at the man with the notebook in his hand, Charlie smiled.
— A Moscow mule would be excellent.
Suddenly, she heard laughter next to her.
— A Moscow mule? Charlie, you know you're in a tabanco, don't you? — Fernando said.
— Of course I do, I saw the sign.
— Then… You should know they don't have those kinds of drinks.
— What kind?
— You know, girly drinks.
Charlie clenched her jaw and pursed her lips, feeling rage creep up the back of her neck like a tingling wave under her skin. “Don't let him get inside your head”, Charlie recalled Lewis telling her. It was a mantra that she repeated sometimes when dealing with Fernando, a plea that she not lose control and slap him across the face.
But then, Fernando decided to provoke her one last time.
— If you don't know what to order, I can recommend a bar that's more to your tastes, one that has those kinds of girly cocktails.
Before Charlie realized what she was doing, she stood up abruptly and stormed away from the table, the protests of her colleagues becoming distant to her ears. Her throat felt tight and her eyes burned. Once again, he had disparaged her, calling the things she liked feminine, insinuating they were lesser, suggesting that she didn’t fit in.
As Charlie walked away from the bar, down the dimly lit street, tears began to stream down her face. She felt anger consuming her as she cursed at herself for not having some sort of comeback for Fernando, for not putting him in his place. She should have slapped him. Or even better yet, she should have called Mike and quit her job on the spot. She thought about what it would take for Fernando to be fired, realizing it would take something incredibly serious, nothing short of literal murder, more likely.
— Stupid, stupid, stupid — Charlie muttered, as she continued walking down the street. She’d gone a fair distance before realizing that she had no idea where she was going. At some point she would have to get to the hotel. She glanced down at her phone, trying to open a map, until she walked into something.
She looked up from her phone and realized that she’d run into the back of a man, standing and chatting to two other men. They looked like they were in their twenties. They were each wearing jeans and puffer jackets. They were each holding a bottle of beer, and reeked of cheap cologne, booze, and cigarettes. As she stared at them, the man Charlie had bumped into smiled at her, but it was not a kind smile — it was a smile that made Charlie’s skin crawl and her stomach churn.
— Miren lo que tenemos aquí — the man said, taking a swig from his bottle — ¿Estás sola, princesa?
Charlie took a step back and tried to swallow down her nerves. She had no idea what he said, or what to say in response. She knew very little Spanish, limited to a few greetings and how to count to ten, whatever she’d picked up from being with Carlos Sainz when he was with McLaren. The man repeated himself as Charlie visibly hesitated, stepping closer to her.
— ¿Qué es, princesa? ¿El gato te comió la lengua?
— Debe ser sorda, Pablo — the man on the right, with curly hair, said, with a laugh.
— No, ella puede oír. Me escuchas, ¿no? — he said, pointing to his ear. Charlie understood that it might be a question about listening, so she nodded, taking another step back — Ves, ella escucha.
— Pero no responde nada. Esa perra debe ser muda — the third man said, his voice deep and gravelly.
— Si es muda, mejor para nosotros — the curly-haired boy said, running his tongue over his lower lip — De todo modo, es hora del postre.
She could feel the adrenaline kicking in, making her feel hyper-aware of her surroundings. She wanted to run away, but she felt frozen on the spot as the men got closer, their eyes dark and sinister, murmuring things in a language she didn’t understand. She felt one of the men wrap his hand around her wrist, and understood what they wanted. Charlie knew she wasn't going to get rid of them until they got it.
— Vamos, princesa, no seas mala — the first man murmured, tightening his fingers around her arm — Si no, tendremos que utilizar la fuerza.
Fear had rendered Charlie unable to say anything. She couldn't scream, couldn't protest, couldn't call for help. With more tears streaming down her cheeks, she realized exactly what was about to happen to her, on some dark street in Jerez, all because she got into a fight with an asshole coworker.
She hadn’t expected this night — and maybe her life — would come to such a ridiculous and tragic ending.
— Cariño — she thought she heard someone say through the fog of dread that shrouded her mind. Her throat was getting tighter by the second, and she could feel a nervous sweat breaking out across her lower back — ¡Espérame, cariño!
The words seemed to have a repelling effect on the men who were surrounding her, their expressions startled as they watched someone approach behind her. "This is a trap, I’m so fucked", Charlie thought, gasping when she felt a hand on her shoulder. She was about to try to run before she realized who had been calling her name. Fernando stepped in front of her, his expression mixing relief and concern.
— Por favor, mi amor, nunca vuelvas a hacer eso — Fernando said, cradling her face gently in his hands, his thumbs caressing her cheeks — Nunca, nunca más. Casi muero preocupándome por ti.
He pulled her into a tight hug, nestling her head in the crook of his neck, cradling the back of her head with one of his hands. Wrapped in his arms, Charlie felt a whirlwind of emotions. Her confusion only grew when he whispered in her ear in English, requesting that she follow his lead and not say anything.
As the man that grabbed Charlie’s wrist backed further away, Fernando returned to run his hand through her hair, tenderly.
— Perdóname, mi ángel, realmente fui un idiota contigo. Pero no salgas así, sin rumbo. No sé qué haría si te hubiera perdido, mi corazón — he said, planting a kiss on Charlie's forehead before hugging her again, his hand resting on the back of her head — Gracias por encontrar mi novia. No sé qué sería de mí sin ella.
If the three men said anything in response, Charlie didn't hear them. As Fernando held her close, her face buried in the white sweatshirt Fernando was wearing, she forced herself to focus on the sound of his heart pounding against his chest instead. Being in such close proximity to someone she didn’t like was strange. It was even stranger to her that she wasn’t feeling annoyed, or even disgusted with such close physical contact with him. What she felt then, wrapped in his arms, wasn’t anger, but safety and relief.
— Gracias, buenas noches — he said, before pulling away slightly to look into Charlie's face. She could feel that her tears had smeared her mascara — Vamos, cariño.
As Fernando led her down the street, still holding her hand, she felt like she was having some strange out-of-body experience. She was just a spectator, unable to act or intervene. Walking next to her, Fernando seemed to be talking on the phone with someone, but the way her pulse pounded in her ears stopped Charlie from being able to tell who she was talking to or what they were discussing.
— Necesito que vuelvas al hotel ahora. Por favor, no puedo explicar por teléfono. Charlie está bien, dile esto al resto del equipo y que se queden al tabanco y disfruten de la noche. Si, te espero. Hasta luego — Fernando said, before putting the cell phone back in the back pocket of his jeans — Are you okay, Charlie?
— Yeah — she replied in a whisper.
— I'm taking you back to our hotel, okay?
— Okay — Charlie said, finally managing to find her voice. She felt a strange, pleasant heat rising around her shoulders. It was a welcome relief in the chilly night air that prickled at her skin, even under her thick woolen sweater.
The rest of the walk to the hotel was a blur. Neither her or Fernando said anything. There wasn't much to say. She was still processing what had almost happened that night, all because she was unable to keep her anger in check, especially where Fernando was concerned. However, contrary to what she expected to feel, given the situation, she didn't feel angry with him.
The only thing she felt was guilty.
As they got to the hotel lobby, Charlie spotted Edoardo standing by the reception desk, looking at his phone. When he looked up and saw the two of them there, the expression of concern on his face changed to relief.
— Thank God you're here. Are you all right, Charlie? What happened? Can I help?
— Edo, I'll explain later — Fernando said. He cut himself off as soon she placed her hand on his fingers, which were still on her shoulder.
— I'm fine — she replied, her voice hesitant — I just need to go to my room.
— Do you have your key? Those guys didn't steal anything, right?
— It's in my purse — Charlie said, running a hand over her cheeks, wiping away her tears with the back of her sleeve.
The three of them rode the elevator to Charlie’s room in silence. Edo helped her find her key card and Fernando stepped into the room first, giving a cursory check before signaling to the other two to enter. Charlie trudged to the bed and sat down on the mattress, still in disbelief over the evening’s events. It replayed over and over in her mind. She shook her head, as if it could physically eject the memories of the men’s sinister, knowing smiles and the rough hand around her wrist.
— Here, drink this — she heard Fernando say from in front of her. She opened her eyes, and saw him bent over, a soft expression on his face as he offered her a water bottle. Without protesting, she drank the water, realizing how parched her lips and throat were. Then, she propped the bottle against her leg and looked up at him.
— Why?
Fernando blinked, confused.
— Sorry, I don’t understand.
— Why did you run after me?
He sighed.
— My initial intention was to apologize and bring you back to the bar. But when I realized you were gone, I — he hesitated for a few seconds — I knew you didn't know the city and didn't speak the language, which, unfortunately makes you an easy target for bad people. I feared the worst, so I asked a guy that was in front of the bar which way you went and I followed.
— Why did you defend me from them?
— Because I wouldn't be able to live with myself if something bad happened to you.
— But it was my fault...
— No, it's not. It's my fault, Charlie. I'm the one who was giving you a hard time, and made you react that way. I apologize for everything that happened today.
She couldn't deny that there was sincerity in the way Fernando was speaking to her and looking at her. His eyes were filled with obvious guilt. “Maybe he is actually sorry,” Charlie thought, sniffling.
— It’s alright. I'll be fine.
— You will be, I'm sure — he said quietly, before getting to his feet — Well, I'll let you rest. You go back to England tomorrow morning with the team, right?
— Yeah.
— Excellent. But if you need anything, message me. You have my number on Whatsapp right? I know you don't have Instagram anymore since I...
— Oh, I still do. I blocked you — Charlie muttered.
He stopped for a few seconds.
— You blocked me on Instagram?
— After your third or fourth request to follow me — she replied quietly.
— Ah — Fernando said, trying to disguise his discomfort with Charlie’s admission — Well, you know how to reach me. Good night, Charlie.
— Good night and — she paused for a few seconds, her eyes locked with his — Thank you. Honestly.
Fernando looked at her for a few moments, and then smiled.
— It was the least I could do — he replied, placing a hand on Edo's shoulder. His physiotherapist also wished her a good night before following Fernando into the hallway.
When the door closed, Charlie let out a heavy sigh, realizing the tension that had built up in her muscles. Perhaps a bath would help cleanse her body, and maybe, her soul of everything that had happened that night. There was one thing she needed to do before she did anything else, though.
Removing her phone from her purse, she unlocked it and logged into Instagram. Going into the search bar, she typed in a name and found the correct account immediately. So Charlie tapped the blue button and then the confirmation that popped up on the screen. Finally, she clicked the 'follow' button, dropping her phone onto her bed. “Maybe he feels better now”, she thought, as she walked towards the bathroom.
That night, her sleep was disturbed by nightmares. The next morning, Charlie woke up to the sound of her cell phone alarm feeling more tired than she had been when she’d gone to bed. However, she couldn't afford to stay in bed any longer, as she had to be at the airport in an hour.
The trip back to the UK was uneventful, and she took the opportunity to sleep during the flight. On the way to Northampton, she shared a car with Mikey and three of Fernando’s other mechanics, all chatting animatedly about the results from testing, and what their hopes were for the season.
However, Charlie couldn't think about sectors, telemetry or lap times. All she could think about the previous night, how Fernando had suddenly appeared from the darkness and embraced her as if she were the most precious thing in the world, and not someone he hated.
She sighed, deciding that this was something she’d need to talk about with Hannah.
Her session with the therapist had been scheduled for that Friday, late afternoon. Charlie started therapy in early 2016 as a way to deal with the anxiety she had begun to suffer from after a miserable season with Fernando and his constant haranguing and requests that she be swapped for another engineer.
However, she hadn't been Charlie's first choice, as she believed that a psychologist specializing in sports medicine could best help her. However, one session with the one that McLaren kept on retainer was enough for the therapist to tell her that her issues ran deeper than performance anxiety, and that he would recommend a colleague of his. Fortunately, his recommendation proved to be the right one for her.
— Charlie? — Hannah said with a smile. She was standing in the doorway of her office, with her curly hair tied up in a kind of bun and wearing an orange suit that looked vibrant against the dark color of her skin — Shall we?
— Yes.
After entering Hannah’s office and settling into the white armchair, Charlie dropped her bag on the side table. Then she took a deep breath as her therapist settled into the chair across from her.
— So it's been some time since our last session, has it? About 10, 15 days?
— Yeah.
— Then I think you have plenty to tell me. Shall we start with the book I recommended?
— Actually — Charlie said — I wanted to talk about my last trip.
— Oh, you had a work trip, right? Where was it again?
— Jerez — she answered softly.
— Is that in Spain? — Hannah asked, and Charlie nodded — Oh, I imagine that was quite interesting considering your relationship with…
— I'm not sure if interesting is the right word, Hannah — Charlie said quietly.
— Did something happen, Charlie?
— Well, not during testing. That bit all went as expected. But later, the night after testing was done, Fernando invited everyone to go to a bar.
— Everyone but you?
— No, he invited me as well, and I went. It was one of those traditional Spanish pubs that looks like a basement, I can't really explain it. But he and I ended up arguing because I ordered a Moscow mule, so I left.
— You argued over your choice of drink?
— He said it was a girly drink, that they didn't have that kind of stuff in that kind of bar, and he kept teasing me, so I lost my patience with him. But, after I left the bar, I ended up getting lost in the streets and I ran into — she paused for a few seconds — Some guys.
Hannah nodded, waiting for her to continue.
— They were drunk, speaking Spanish, but you could tell what they wanted. They cornered me, and I couldn't scream or call for help — Charlie's voice cracked, her eyes filling with tears.
— Did they do something to you?
— No, they did not. They couldn't because… Fernando followed me.
The therapist raised an eyebrow.
— But…
— He said he asked a guy who saw me leave the bar which way I'd gone and he went after me. He arrived, put his hands on my face and then hugged me. Then he said something to the guys and managed to get me out of there.
— And then what happened?
— We went to the hotel, where we found his physiotherapist, Edoardo. And the two of them went with me to my room. Then, Fernando gave me water and told me if I needed anything I could send a message that he would do his best to help me. I thanked him, and he said it was the least he could do, because he wouldn’t be able to live with himself if something bad happened to me.
Hannah opened her mouth, as if to say something, but then closed it again, her expression thoughtful.
— And what do you think about that?
— About what?
— About Fernando's attitude.
Charlie pressed her mouth into a thin line, trying to organize her thoughts.
— Well, all of my feelings are kind of contradictory. I'm surprised, since he hugged me, kissed my forehead, kept his arm around me while we walked back to the hotel, tried to calm me down the whole time, I realized that he's not being as nasty as he used to be. It's like he’s putting in an effort on his part to try to have a cordial relationship with me.
— So you notice a change in his attitude towards you?
— Well, a little? — Charlie answered, a little uncertainly. Noticing Hannah's expression, she corrected herself — Okay, yes, the change is considerable.
— And how does that make you feel?
— I'm still suspicious, I don't believe someone can change like that...
— Charlie, you haven't seen him on a daily basis in nearly five years. People can change in that time, even more so in a volatile environment like your job. You told me yourself that you’d noticed how Daniel Ricciardo changed from his first to his second year at McLaren and how that affected your team as a whole.
— But Danny never stopped being polite to us.
— And Fernando isn't being polite?
— Well, he is, but...
— Charlie — Hannah interrupted her — Have you ever thought that maybe your perception of Fernando might be changing?
— What do you mean?
— When we started our sessions, one of the first things we explored was your relationship with him. You were 27 years old, you were starting to become more established in your career and you were particularly disappointed because the driver you were excited to work with and thought was handsome was an asshole. But, I don't think you ever stopped to think that maybe he was disappointed too.
— Hannah…
— The point is, you're not the same now. You're 33 and he's over 40, right? You both have grown and matured. You’ve dedicated yourselves to other projects and dreams, as well as personal goals.
Charlie remained silent, trying to concentrate on her breathing.
— Just like you sometimes don't recognize that woman from 2015, who cried hiding in the paddock after Fernando said something rude, maybe Fernando doesn't recognize the guy that was yelling about GP2 engines and looking like an amateur — the therapist said — And that's okay. What I mean is, are you able to recognize that he is no longer McLaren Fernando, and are you open to meeting Aston Martin Fernando?
Charlie looked down at her hands, contemplating Hannah’s question. It was true that the Fernando she knew now was not the same Fernando she’d met in Woking. He was no longer the driver looking for a second chance in an older team, nor was he the frustrated veteran not given the proper tools to achieve his goals, but someone more mature, with more experience and, more than anything else, still hungry to win.
Just like her.
— I think I am.

But then Maria was struck with sadness at all of this.
“If only,” she said. “I mean, this is so beautiful. And she deserves it, I’m not saying she doesn’t. But why do you think some people get happy endings and others don’t?”
“Oh, hell if I know. Sorry, I was just fixing the lights.”
Jordan had a worried look of having done something wrong, and which made Maria smile. Made her heart ache just a little more. He was no philosopher, and she didn’t need him to be. He was thoughtful and generous and usually aloof. But the way he stopped, really heard her, that slight raise in his eyebrow that said he cared in ways he couldn’t put words to, it meant everything to her. It was one of the few things she cherished in this life.
“I guess it probably sucks for you to work here, with all the weddings,” he said.
“Sometimes I think I should feel worse.”
“Why should you feel worse?”
She and Joseph got pregnant first and married soon after. A traditional shotgun thing, not that anyone’s parents demanded it, but Joseph was a traditional sort of guy. He would have been a good husband, probably. That’s what everyone said. He would have been a great father. Maybe. Maria had never known him to care for a pet or sibling or even a plant, but he had that dominant kind of control that would have led a household like a Navy ship. Probably his sharp edges would soften and he could be caring and patient and devoted and all those things a father and husband needed to be. Parenthood brings out the best in people sometimes, except when it doesn’t.
But none of that mattered now because that wasn’t what fate had in store for them.
“Joseph was a fine enough guy and everything, but he and I weren’t together very long. You know, it’s not like I lost the love of my whole life or anything. Maybe he would have been in time, but that didn’t happen for us, and now I’ve known all kinds of people longer than I ever knew him. Ha, I’ve even known you for longer, actually. So is that it? Is that all the love story I get?”
Tumblr media
“I doubt it. You’re only twenty-six. You can’t quit and become a retired pond swan yet.”
“Can’t I? Why not?”
“Because that would be a shame.”
She sighed. She looked him in the eyes. Maybe she shouldn’t poke it, but she couldn’t resist. Part of her didn’t want to know. Part of her wanted to keep this cherished fantasy alive, because without that, what else would she have? But the other part of her, the part that hoped, was stupid. “Why? Why would it be a shame?”
“Maria, you know you’re great.”
“Oh, like, ‘you have a really great personality’ kind of great?”
“You do have a great personality. But that’s not all.”
“Okay, I’m a good friend, too? The plain-looking plucky friend who’s a little bit funny, in a good way.”
“Maria. You’re not plain-looking.”
“What am I missing here?”
Tumblr media
“You know, I’m not a reliable kind of guy.”
“That’s not nice to think about yourself.”
“You can think nice things about a person if you want, but that doesn’t make them true.”
“So tell me why.”
“Colette is right to be pissed at me. I wasn’t around after she had the boys, and it took me years to take any real responsibility. But then I tried. I’ve been trying for years. And I love them, but now I’ve been trying to figure out how to leave.”
“Leave Colette?”
“Leave, everything. I mean, it’s not like I want to leave my boys, but she’d never let me take them. So what am I supposed to do? Maybe I could take them sometimes. But I just need to go, you know?”
“Where do you want to go?”
“Well, there’s this thing I booked in Nevada, but that’s not all. Because after that, I’m going to Japan. And after that, I want to hike the Pacific Crest Trail—that’s more than a long weekend, it takes half a year! I want to see Argentina, and Alaska, and Europe. Just, everywhere. I want to be free to go. To work how I want and go when I want and break out of all these boxes.” He may have sounded flippant at first, but as he went on, his tone took a sharp turn toward desperation. “I don’t know what I’m supposed to do. I know it sounds bad, but I don’t think I’m cut out for it, you know, being that kind of guy. The kind of guy who has all his shit together. Because all I really want to do is figure out how to just get away from it all.”

“Oh. I get it.”
“But do you?” He shook his head. “See, I didn’t want you to feel like this. I mean, this isn’t because of you. Because, if I was meant for that normal kind of life—”
“No, it’s okay. I get it.” Maybe Maria understood, intellectually, but it felt too much like rejection in this moment, in this night with the pond swans and the holographic hearts. It hit worse than rejection. There was a finality to it. How could you ever be with someone who wanted to be so detached? There was less than the slim chance of hope she thought she’d been holding onto. She shouldn’t have poked. “I… I have to go finish a tofu saltimbocca.”
“Wait, Maria.”
And, she suspected, she needed to run to the pantry to have a little cry.
