“Y/N and Yoongi sitting in a tree K-I-S-S-I-N-G” Your sister Minyoung sang as the two of you put up decorations in your living room as Joshua and Dino set up furniture around you.
“Do you want to die?” you asked as you started chasing her around the apartment with one of the foam paddings that the furniture came with.
“You know you want it to happen!” she said giggling as she went to hide behind your couch. “You saw the text messages between Taehyung and the rest of his members!”
You stopped in your tracks as you thought about the messages you saw Joshua exchanging with the rest of the group and turned to him, “Yea, what the heck is that about? Matchmaker?”
“It’s obvious I’m not the only one who thinks you and Yoongi are perfect for each other.” Joshua said with a smirk, “But you’re shy and outgoing while Yoongi’s just shy. If we left it to the two of you, nothing would ever happen.”
“I second that.” Dino said as he screwed in a leg for one of your tables. “Consider it a thank you for getting me and Minyoung together Sis. Plus, if you kill your sister, you’re out a manager and I would kill you right after.”
“You guys act as if Yoongi actually has a thing for me.” you said as you went back to putting up decorations, thoughts of killing your little sister long forgotten.
“He does.” Joshua stated and both Dino and Minyoung nodded. “Just watch and see.”
“I’ve met Yoongi once Sis” Minyoung said, “You two are perfect for each other.”
“Who’s perfect for eachother?” Taehyung asked opening your front door with bags of snacks in his hands followed by Jimin, Jungkook and lastly, Yoongi. He then slapped his hands over his eyes, “For fuck sakes Y/N go put some pants on! You have guests!”
“I’m wearing shorts idiot.” you said lifting up your oversized sweatshirt revealing pink booty shorts which caught the attention of everyone who had just walked in.
“Dang she has nice legs.” Jungkook commented on purpose in front of Yoongi to get a reaction out of him and was pleased with the glare that he received but he was also slightly scared at the same time.
“Hey guys, sorry about the mess.” you said coming up to the group with Minyoung and greeted them. “You guys can make yourselves at home. I heard you’ve met my sister.” You motioned to Minyoung who smiled at each of the guys.
“Long time no see everyone.” she said with a smile, “It’s actually perfect that you two are here.” she said to Jimin and Jungkook, “I could use your help with this thing in my sisters bedroom.”
“Lead the way then.” Jimin said as Minyoung linked her arms through each of the mens and dragged them down the hall leaving you and Yoongi to stand by the door.
Taehyung had gone to greet Dino and Joshua after he put the snacks in the kitchen and had already started helping Joshua with whatever he was doing. You had a feeling that this was part of their “little plan” they had started but decided to go along with it anyways. You were almost 100% sure that Yoongi didn’t like you like that, I mean how could he? You two had literally just met within the last twenty-four hours.
“Welcome to my home.” you said with a small smile as Yoongi handed you a bag filled with what you noted was your favorite drink.
“Tae mentioned that it was your go-to so I got a few to stock your fridge up.” he said trying to keep his cool though on the inside he was sweating buckets.
“Thank you, but you seriously didn’t have to.” you said taking the bag from his hands and couldn’t contain your blush when his hand brushed yours. “Do you want a tour of the place?” you asked and he nodded his head after he put his backpack down by the door.
“Lead the way.” he said as you lead him to the kitchen so you could put the drinks away.
Little did you know, there were three pairs of eyes following your every move. Taehyung, Joshua and Dino all put their heads together and snickered.
“This is going to be way easier than I thought.” Taehyung said with a grin as he watched you lead Yoongi down the hall towards your bedroom and office.
“Yea, it’s cause Y/N knows of your little plan.” Dino stated and Taehyung looked at him with wide eyes.
“What the heck? How?!” he asked and he turned to Joshua who had a sheepish grin on his face.
“She may have seen the messages you sent to the chat this morning. I mean, who the heck names a group, Operation Matchmaker?” Joshua asked defending himself.
“Who leaves their phone on the coffee table for all the world to see?” Dino retorted with a snort and looked up to see you and Yoongi had emerge from your office which doubled as a dance studio.
“How long did it take to get the mirrors set up?” Yoongi asked as you made your way back to the living room.
“I found the place like a year ago but the person was still living here. Once they moved out six months later, the leasing office told me that I could start the renovations whenever so I had it done as soon as I could.” you said going back to the box you had been emptying. “It was actually three bedrooms but I had them knock down the wall to make it bigger. My sister checked on the progress while I finished what I had to do in the States.”
“Thats cool” Yoongi said as he started helping you take things out though you didn’t ask. He found you interesting so he wanted to keep talking to you, plus he didn’t feel like doing much heavy lifting and left it to the others.
The two of you continued to talk about the little things in life and you found it was easier to talk to him than you thought. When you first saw him the day before, you felt shy and didn’t want to say much but you could tell just by the first five minutes of conversation that Yoongi could be an open book when he wanted to be.
A while later, most of the furniture had been built and placed in their respective places and all that was left to do was finish your living room furniture and set up the entertainment system. Namjoon had texted Taehyung and told him that they were bringing dinner and that they would be there soon.
Taehyung answered the door once he heard a knock and answered it expecting to see Jin and Namjoon only but was surprised to see Hara as well.
“Oh hey Hara.” Taehyung said, “I didn’t know you were coming.”
“She kind of just followed us.” Jin muttered and Taehyung chuckled. “Would Y/N mind?”
“Probably not.” Taehyung said as he took the food from his hands while Namjoon went to greet everybody before introducing Hara to Joshua, Dino and Minyoung.
“Where’s Y/N?” Namjoon asked afterwards and everyone pointed to the room down the hall.
“She and Yoongi have been setting up the dance studio for most of the afternoon. They became friends real fast.” Jungkook said, “I told you the nice leg comment would work.”
“Nice...leg...comment?” Jin asked right as you peeked your head out of the office/dance studio door and he noticed that an oversized hoodie was covering most of your legs and he had to admit, you definitely had nice legs.
“Hey guys!” you said coming out to greet everyone and noticed the extra person, “Hi, I’m Y/N” you held out your hand.
“Hara.” she said.
“She’s a trainee at Big Hit and wanted to tag along. I hope that’s okay.” Namjoon said and you shrugged your shoulders. “Where’s Yoongi?”
“It’s all good.” you said not really caring, “He’s in the room down the hall to the left helping me set some stuff up. Taehyung mentioned you guys brought dinner.”
“That we did.” he said holding a bag of what looked like fried chicken. “Are you ready to eat?”
As if on que, Yoongi’s voice came from the room you had exited, “Hey Y/N, come back I need your help with something.”
“Coming!” you called back and turned back to Namjoon, “You guys can start first, Yoongi and I are just finishing up the room. Josh and Tae know where everything is...considering they’re the ones who set it up. Make yourselves at home.” you gave him a big smile before going back into the room where a thud was heard almost immediately along with laughter between the two of you.
“Y/N?” Joshua called but Yoongi was the one to respond it a muffled voice.
“She’s good!”
“What the heck are you two doing?” Minyoung asked going to investigate the chaos and when she saw the state you and Yoongi were currently in, she cracked up laughing. “Oh my gosh, Chan you need to get me my phone. I need a picture of this for her wall.”
Curiosity got the best of them and the whole group went to check out what happened and they were surprised to see you and Yoongi under a pile of stuffed animals but you currently had a giant cat sitting on your face and Yoongi was sitting on top of that cat stuffed animal laughing.
This caused laughter among the group and those who had their phones on them started taking pictures.
“What happened?” Jin asked as Yoongi started to unbury you.
“We were setting these guys up in a net on the ceiling and the other side collapsed before Y/N could get here.” Yoongi explained and looked down at you. “I told you not to leave. Now we have to set this all up again.”
“I had to greet my guests!” you said laughing, “Plus, I’ve decided the cat is going into my bedroom. It’s fatass is going to make this collapse again.”
“Great idea.” Joshua said, “Now how about we all take a break and have dinner first? Then we can get back to finishing up what needs to be done.”
“You guys go ahead, we’ll be there in a few minutes.” Yoongi said pulling you up so you were sitting and your hair all over your face. You had yet to stop laughing and your stomach was starting to hurt.
“Better come quick before all the foods gone.” Minyoung sang but ushered everyone towards your living room where the table of food was set up while giving all the boys a thumbs up.
Hara stayed in her spot as she watched the interaction between you and Yoongi with confusion. Yoongi had actually laughed at something not related to his members. This was the first time she had seen him remotely show interest in anything or anyone outside of his members and music. She had been content when Yoongi spoke a few words to her and figured he would open up eventually but this was the first time she really saw him smile properly and not smirk. She couldn’t help but feel dislike for you build unwillingly. She turned away and went back to the living room where everyone was gathered, she suddenly didn’t feel so hungry anymore.
“Y/N! Yoongi! Let’s hurry up and eat!!” Jin called from the living room.
When the two of you entered, there were plates that were already premade for you and you went to your fridge to get one of the drinks Yoongi got you. When you got back, you saw that the only space available was next to Yoongi and you shot a glare at Josh and Taehyung who gave you an innocent smile.
You also saw that Hoseok had come at some point and greeted him as well.
“Hey Y/N, Tae said you used to dance right?” Hoeseok asked and you nodded.
“I still do for fun, it’s why I had the contractors put in the dance mirrors and hardwood floors.” you answered, “I’ll show you the room afterwards.”
“That’s so cool though. How did you start modeling?” Jimin asked and you looked at Joshua.
“I got scouted at the same place and time he got scouted by Pledis.” you said pointing at Joshua. “Except I stayed local and Joshua said yes and came here. I think we lost touch for like two years or something after that.”
Joshua nodded his head in confirmation, “Minyoung was already here and we ran into each other at a cafe one day. Y/N came to visit Minyoung and reintroduced us and we’ve kept in touch since then.”
“Then Josh introduced us to his members on the odd day and it was obvious the chemistry between Minyoung and Dino was strong so Joshua and I would hang out alone leaving those two alone most of the time.” you added.
“But you guys never dated.” Jin stated looking between the two of you. The question was obviously to curb any potential rumors that could start but the look that you and Joshua had on your faces told him everything.
“Lets just say dating her would be like dating my sister.” Joshua said with one of his bright but fake smiles. “Disgusting.”
“Sorry you’re what?” you asked looking at Joshua with raised eyebrows.
“Don’t start you two.” Minyoung cut in, “We still have a bit to do before we can call it a night.”
“Honestly, after the living room is fully set up the only thing left is to finish the dance studio decorations which I can do myself.” you said, “Thanks for helping out today by the way” and then you looked at Jin and Namjoon, “And thanks for bringing dinner, I have yet to go grocery shopping so I’ve been eating out a lot.”
“You’re welcome” Jin said with a smile and nudged Yoongi in the ribs.
“I-I can stay and help you finish the dance studio if you want.” he said quietly though everyone heard him and Hara’s turned to look at him with disbelief.
“You don’t have to…” you started, “It’s just some wiring for the sound system and the stuffed animal mess anyways. I’m sure you have things to do tomorrow so you should go and get some rest.”
“It’s okay...we have a rest day tomorrow so I can catch up on my sleep then.” he said, “Plus, I kind of made that mess too so it’s the least I can do.”
“If you’re sure…” you said and he nodded his head which made you give him a smile, “Thank you.”
Yoongi’s heart melted at your smile and he was oblivious to the looks everyone in the room was sharing but you had noticed right away and nudged Taehyun in the ribs to cut it out.
“Then it’s settled, we’ll all work on cleaning and setting up the entertainment system out here and you two can finish the dance studio.” Minyoung said and everyone minus Hara nodded in agreement.
The boys of BTS spent the rest of dinner getting to know you more and they quickly came to the conclusion that they liked you and that you were a perfect fit for Yoongi. After everyone was done eating, Jin and Hoseok helped clean the kitchen and living room while everyone else split into groups to build whatever was left and to set up the audio system around the house.
Once it was all set up, Taehyung and Joshua went to check on you and Yoongi to see how you guys were doing and they were happy to see that the two of you were getting along just fine.
“See I told you, we might not even have to play matchmaker here. They might be able to do it themselves.” Taehyung said quietly as to not disturb the two of you.
“We’ll see…” Joshua said watching as you helped Yoongi stick some fairy lights around the room. “Got to admit though, they are cute together and they’ve become close in one day...not bad for Y/N.”
“Or Yoongi for that matter. We should let the others know and clear out so we can leave them alone.” Taehyung said and Joshua nodded. The two made their way back to the living room where everyone was currently resting and told them what they saw.
At the same time, Hara had gone back to the dance studio and knocked lightly on the door making you and Yoongi stop whatever conversation you were having to look at her.
“Whats up?” you asked sitting up and stretching your back.
“Do you guys need any help? Everyones about to leave but I can stay so you can finish faster if you’d like…” she said watching Yoongi carefully to see his reaction and frowned when he didn’t even turn around as he was too focussed on placing the lighting in a straight line.
“It’ll be too late by the time I leave tonight Hara. I told Y/N that I’d help her set up the studio sound system once we’re done with the lights.” he said, “You should head back with the guys, it wouldn’t be safe for you to walk back on your own.”
“You could always walk me back after.” she suggested and looked at you for help but you weren’t even paying attention anymore as you were looking at your phone.
“It’ll be too late.” Yoongi said again before calling for Namjoon who came running in.
“Whats up?” he asked and saw Hara standing by the door with an apparent frown on her face.
“Are you guys about to head out?” Yoongi asked finally sitting up to turn and look at Namjoon,
“Yep, Jungkook said he’d drop Hara off at the dorm along the way.” Namjoon said knowing the plan the group had come up with, “Do you need anything?”
“I’ll be back late” Yoongi said repeating the exact same thing that he said to Hara and Namjoon nodded.
“Sounds good. Then we’re going to take off then. We’ll see you tomorrow.” Namjoon said and touched Hara’s shoulder, “Let’s go.”
Hara was about to protest but stayed silent when you got up and told Yoongi you’d be right back. He nodded his head and went back to laying the fairy lights on the double sided tape that was set up completely ignoring her.
“Thanks for helping out today guys. My apartments done in a day thanks to you.” you said as you stood by the door.
“It’s no problem.” Jin said, “We’re glad we could help out.”
“If you need anything at all, just let us know.” Namjoon added, “It was great getting to know you.”
You grinned at the people in front of you, “You guys as well. Thanks again.” you said with a wave as they started filing out. “Make sure my sister gets home safe Chan” you said sternly and said boy rolled his eyes.
“Yes Sis.”
“I’ve put some of the extra blankets on the couch just incase it gets too late for Yoongi to go home.” Joshua said with a wink, “I’ll text you later.”
“Sounds good” you said with a roll of your eyes. “See you all later.”
“Where’s Hara?” Jungkook asked looking around and went towards your music studio where she was sitting next to Yoongi who was obviously ignoring her. “Hey Hara, let’s go.”
The said girl looked up at him and frowned, “I can walk by on my own later.” she stated.
“Yea and let all the other guys kill me when you don’t get home safely.” Jungkook retorted with a roll of his eyes. “Let’s go.”
Hara let out a huff before getting up, “I’ll see you tomorrow?” she asked Yoongi who shrugged from his position.
“Not sure.” he said in monotone, “Good night.”
Once your apartment was cleared, you decided to make some tea for you and Yoongi and by the time you got back into the studio, all the fairy lights were set up.
“Dang this looks good” you said as you walked back in and handed him a cup of tea which he accepted and you sat down next to him cross legged.
“Thank you, I did most of it myself.” he said and let out a breath.
“So you know our friends are meddling right?” you asked out of the blue and Yoongi nodded.
“Jin has a habit of leaving his phone on the coffee table in the living room.” Yoongi said taking a sip of the tea.
“Josh does that too.” you said with a nod. “So what are we going to do about it?”
“Make them suffer.” Yoongi stated before turning to look at you and knew exactly what he had to do. After spending most of the day talking to you, he found that you were extremely easy going and the two of you had a lot in common but not enough to find it boring or creepy and there was a big part of him that wanted to get to know you more than a friend.
“Would you maybe want to go for coffee sometime? This is purely me asking you without the meddling of our friends.” he said and your eyes widened in shock.
“S-sure.” you answered and he gave you his cute gummy smile.
“Awesome.” he said, “And in regards to the meddling, we should make them try really hard to ‘get us together’”
“I completely agree with you.” you said with a smile as you clinked your tea cups and the two of you spent the rest of the night setting up an efficient sound system.
Once you guys were happy with the set up, you and Yoongi ended up on your couch talking about random things until the wee hours of the morning and in the end, he decided to stay the night though in reality it was almost sunrise by the time you two had decided to go to bed anyways.
Somewhere across town, there were various text messages being sent in a group chat.
[12:30am] Minyoung - So I’m just gonna put this out there, is this Hara girl going to be an issue? Cause if Yoongi breaks my sisters heart, Im going to break his face.
[12:31am] Josh - Isn’t she the girl that was in your last MV guys?
[12:31am] Tae - Yep...she has a thing for Yoongi though I’m sure thats fairly obvious
[12:32am] Dino - No shit. What are we going to do about it?
[12:33am] ChimChim - You guys matchmake while we cockblock, duh
[12:33am] Kookie - Who is this “we” you speak of Jimin
[12:34am] ChimChim - You and I obviously. We’re perfect for that.
[12:36am] Jin - You don’t have to worry about Yoongi. He has zero interest in her even as a friend. I think he finds her more annoying than anything
[12:36am] RM - Be nice guys. She’s still part of the agency.
[12:37am] Hobi - Guys..I realized Y/N didn’t show me her dance studio :(

Don’t Hide From Me.
Josh Dun x Reader
AN: Soulmate AU which coincides with a request by anon. Surprised myself by finishing it in one sitting. It’s a little long, but any shorter and I don’t think I would have done it justice.
Warnings: Some cursing, light drinking, little bit of angst but nothing major.

“That’s um...”
“Yeah.”
“Wow.”
“I know.”
I groaned and plopped myself next to Jenna, holding my right arm and looking at all the colors on it.
“What am I going to do Jenna? This soulmark is ridiculous. Have you ever heard of anyone having a whole sleeve as a soulmark?”
Jenna tilted her head, a blonde strand falling from her bun. “I mean, mine could be considered a sleeve too.” She shrugged.
“Right, yes, but, those are just black bands. Mine is a giant fucking tree and some space stuff and a sunset or something. My entire arm is covered. What was my soulmate thinking when they chose this?” I yanked my sleeve down, covering the soulmark, before burying my face in my hands. Jenna patted my back comfortingly.
“He was probably thinking that it was beautiful, and that it would help him find you easier.” Her voice was soft and soothing. “I shouldn’t say he. Could be a girl for all I know. Or a they.”
I chuckled, placing my head on her shoulder. “Well, whoever they are, they’re much more flamboyant than me. When was the last time you saw me wear color?”
This time Jenna laughed, like bells ringing around my room. “Black is a color.”
I snorted. “I don’t know Jenna, this just makes me insecure. I feel like it’s going to draw in a bunch of attention from the kids at school, and I don't want that.” I glanced at my arm again, staring at the fabric of my black hoodie. “Maybe I should keep it covered.”
Jenna’s face scrunched up in concern. “Are you sure? Wouldn't that hurt your soulmate’s feelings? They chose that specifically Y/N.”
I sighed, shaking my head. “I know, but it’s just not me. Maybe their choice showed up on the wrong person? Can that happen?”
“I’ve never heard of that before. Look, they’re your soulmate, even if they’re different from you, there’s still a reason that the universe is trying to bring you together. My soulmark isn’t really my thing either, but if it brings me closer to them, that’s all I care about.”
“You’re right.”
Despite Jenna’s advice, I spent the next two years hiding my soulmark. My family knew of course, and a few close friends, but I wore long sleeves year-round, and didn’t tell other people about it. I used the excuse that my soulmark was personal, and people didn’t press any further when they asked to see it. It was a quarter through my junior year, and still none of my classmates knew what my soulmark looked like.
One morning, Brendon bounded over to me, clutching his soulmate Sarah’s hand. “Sup, Y/N? Did you hear about the two new transfer students?”
I shut my locker with a bang as Jenna joined us. “Why should I care?” I asked him, lifting a brow.
“I’m hearing rumors that they’ve got these huge soulmarks on their arms. They’re the talk of the school.”
I clutched my arm anxiously, “What do they look like?”
Sarah shook her head, “We don’t know yet, we haven’t seen them. Apparently one of theirs covers their entire arm.”
I shared a nervous glance with Jenna. Brendon and Sarah didn’t know what my soulmark looked like, so they didn’t notice the exchange. Jenna just smiled at me encouragingly. She’s always wanted me to meet my soulmate. I just didn’t know why I was so nervous about it. It was supposed to be a happy thing, but I was anything but.
Mercifully the bell rang, and we all dispersed to our classes, promising to meet up for lunch.
I rushed into my first period class, getting a stern look from the teacher at being late. I shrugged sheepishly and sat in my seat, preparing my books for the class.
“Alright guys, we have a new student joining us today. Joshua, if you could come up here and introduce yourself?”
I glanced up from my desk with surprise, I hadn’t even noticed the new student standing off to the side as I entered. A tall boy dressed in a black hoodie and black ripped skinny jeans walked to the front, clearing his throat awkwardly.
I was taken aback by his appearance. He had cotton candy pink hair, a nose ring, and black gages, and he was- well- he was absolutely stunning. I felt my cheeks burn as his brown eyes met mine, before quickly looking away.
“M-my name’s Josh. Uh- I just moved here. My buddy Tyler did too actually. Our old school lost funding so we ended up having to come here. Which is wild if you think about it. Um, I-I like to play drums, and I don't really know what else to say...” he trailed off, clearly uncomfortable with being the center of attention.
“Show us your soulmark!” one of the other students piped up from the back. The teacher shushed him, saying that that was inappropriate.
Josh blushed furiously, but complied anyway. “Oh! Uh- okay.” He pushed up the right sleeve of his hoodie, and my heart jumped into my throat and my stomach dropped. It was the tree. My tree. On his arm.
Josh was my soulmate.
I suddenly felt nauseous.
The class erupted, marveling at the size and color of the soulmark. Even the teacher seemed curious now. “Josh, were you the one who selected your soulmark?” Josh nodded, eyes focused on the ground. “If you’re comfortable, can you tell us why you chose such an elaborate design?”
Josh looked at his exposed arm, as if trying to figure it out himself. “I just thought that the colors were gorgeous, and I love trees and space and stuff. I figured that this was such a happy looking soulmark, and I wanted my soulmate to feel that. Whenever things got dark or lonely for them, that they could look at their arm, and see how beautiful and bright it was, and they would know that things would get better. That not everything is dark. I wanted them to be bold and comfortable with who they are, unlike me, and wear it proudly for all to see. And to know that I would come find them, and love them with all that I am.”
Josh blushed again as his voice trailed off, suddenly feeling like he shared too much. He glanced around the room, taking in everyone’s expressions. My classmate’s mouths all hung open in wonder, and even the teacher had to subtly wipe away a stray tear. “That’s beautiful Joshua, thank you for sharing that.”
I squirmed uncomfortably in my seat. That was his reason for putting this huge piece on my arm. I suddenly felt like the biggest asshole ever, never once interpreting my soulmark that way. Instead I had been ashamed of it. Josh deserved someone so much better than me.
“You can sit in the empty seat next to Y/N. Welcome to our class Josh.” the teacher directed.
I felt my pulse pick up. No, no, no, this was bad, I couldn't handle this. I wasn’t ready.
Josh scooted into the seat next to me, giving me a shy, yet warm smile as he did so. “Hey, I’m Josh.” he held his hand out for me to shake. In my panic, I ignored his hand and just nodded, before turning away. My chest constricted at the look of hurt that flashed over Josh’s face. Why am I acting like this?
My phone buzzed in my pocket, and I pulled it out to see a text from Jenna.
Jenny Bean 9:15am
I think I just met my soulmate.....
I quickly tapped out a reply.
Me too....
When the bell rang, I rushed out of class, desperate to get away. Josh had kept glancing at me all through the period, and my soulmark had itched furiously at his proximity.
Josh didn't have any other morning classes with me, but I still couldn’t focus on my lessons with thoughts of him swimming through my mind. I should be happy that he was around, and that he seemed sweet and thoughtful, if his interpretation of our soulmark was any indication. So why did I feel like I was the wrong one for him? That the soulmark had appeared on my skin by accident?
I shook my head, feeling nauseous again. I should be happy damn it! It wasn’t until I plopped down next to Jenna at our lunch table, that I noticed the two new additions to our group. I glanced up from the table to see Josh sitting right across from me, studying me quietly. Jenna was turned away from me, her head lowered as she and another new boy whispered to each other. Huge smiles were spread across their faces, and they were sitting way too close for people who just met. This must be her soulmate. One look at his bare left arm, and my suspicions were confirmed.
The two were completely oblivious to their surroundings, which tended to happen when soulmates began bonding.
“That’s Tyler,” a deep voice told me. I glanced over again at Josh, who smiled tentatively. “He’s my best friend, but I guess I’ll have to share him now that he’s found his soulmate.” Josh chuckled and my stomach clenched at the sound. Why was everything about him so attractive?
I didn’t reply and just nodded. Josh’s face fell again, and I mentally kicked myself for being such a dick.
Brendon clapped an arm over Josh’s shoulders, “That’s Y/N, she takes a really long time to open up to people, so don’t be too offended by her silent nature. The only reason she hangs out with me is because I sort of forced myself on her. She just can’t escape all this goodness.” Brendon’s eyebrows wiggled as he gestured over his body. I couldn’t help but laugh, and Brendon’s face lit up with the victory. A smile played at Josh’s lips as well.
“Oh okay, I’ll try and be patient then.” Josh said, glancing at me again with a small smirk. Butterflies decided to dance around my stomach then, and my arm itched. I scratched at it the same time that I noticed Josh scratch his. He noticed this as well and lifted a brow. “What’s your soulmark? If you don’t mind me asking...”
“Oh- it’s uh...” I looked anywhere but at Josh as I tried to decide what to do.
“Y/N doesn’t like to show her soulmark, it’s too personal for her. Even Brendon and I don't know what it is, and we’ve known her for years.” Sarah piped up. I was silently grateful.
Josh tilted his head, “Aren’t you afraid you won’t find your soulmate if you don’t show it off? What if they walked by you but never knew you were theirs because they couldn't see the mark?”
I glanced down at Josh’s arm, he had his right sleeve pulled up slightly, showing off some of the brown and green of the mark. Mine itched again, but I ignored it.
“I’m afraid to meet my soulmate..” my voice was barely above a whisper, and Josh had to lean forward to make out what I said in the loud cafeteria.
“Why would you be afraid?” he asked, his voice dripping with concern.
I looked away from him, my eyes not really focusing on anything. “I don’t know I just, I’m afraid that I won’t be good enough for them. Or they’ll be disappointed that it’s me.” My eyes finally met Josh’s again, my cheeks burning. His eyes were filled with a sort of sadness, but also some understanding.
“I get that. But you know, the universe chose you two to be together for a reason. Your soulmate would be able to look past all the things that you’re insecure about, and probably wouldn’t even see them as flaws.” He looked down at his lap, playing with his fingers absentmindedly.
“A-as far as I can tell...there’s nothing that you should be insecure about....” he stuttered. Josh’s cheeks flushed as he looked away, as if unable to believe that he just said that. I coughed, trying to release some of the tightness from my throat.
“T-thank you.”
It was then that Jenna and Tyler joined our conversation, some of the initial soulmate bonding energy subsiding. Conversation flowed easily between the group for the rest of lunch. I learned some more about Tyler and Josh, but elected not to speak at all on it. I instead chose to sit quietly, stealing glances every so often at Josh. More times than not, when I looked up at him, his eyes were already on me.
My soulmark itched.
Breadbin 4:08pm
Yo. I’m having a party tonight at my house. You’re coming. You don't have a choice.
I groaned slightly as I plopped down on my bed.
Do I have to?
My phone buzzed instantly.
Breadbin 4:09pm
Bitch, what did I just say?
I typed out a quick “fine” to Brendon before going to get ready for the party.
By the time I got to his house, there were already a ton of people there and loud music blasting through the speakers. Didn’t people realize this was a school night?
My arm itched again and I knew Josh must be here. I found Jenna and Tyler over by the drinks, and weaved my way through the crowd over to them. Jenna’s face lit up when her eyes fell on me, and a smile eased over Tyler’s mouth as well. The pair were holding hands and practically glowing, their matching soulmarks on full display. It was freaking adorable.
“Hey lovebirds.” I greeted. Jenna giggled and Tyler moved so his arm was around Jenna’s waist, before planting a kiss on her cheek. I always marveled at how quickly soulmates bonded. These two looked as if they had already been dating for a few months with how comfortable they were with each other.
“Where’s Josh?” Jenna asked Tyler. I narrowed my eyes at her, knowing full well what she was doing.
Tyler shrugged, “Dunno, he’s around here somewhere. I’ll go look for him.” Tyler left the two of us, but not until he placed another kiss on Jenna’s cheek.
“What are you doing?” I demanded.
Jenna just shrugged, a huge smile on her face. “He’s your soulmate Y/N. I’m just trying to bring you two together.”
I glowered at her, “You know I’m not ready.”
“No, I know you think you aren’t ready. But the universe has brought him into your life, and I’m not going to let you waste this opportunity.”
“Jenna-”
“No. Listen to me Y/N. Josh probably already feels the pull towards you. He was in a few of my classes today and kept asking about you. He even asked about your soulmark again- I didn’t tell him, calm down!- but he’s a good guy, and he deserves to know. Both of you deserve to be happy.”
I stared at my shoes for a moment after she was done, taking in what she said. “I just, I don’t want him to hate me...” I could feel the back of my throat burning and tears stinging my eyes as they threatened to spill over.
Jenna’s voice softened and she brought me into a hug. “Y/N you are smart, funny, talented, and so so beautiful. You’re even a joy to be around once you open up to people. There’s no way Josh could be disappointed that it’s you.”
I let her hold me for a minute as my thoughts swirled in my head. When I quietly nodded, she released me and gave me a reassuring nod. “Thanks Jenna.”
She smiled warmly. “I’m always here for you bud.”
The two of us went and found Tyler, who still hadn’t seen Josh, but didn't seem worried about it. Instead we mingled a bit, introducing Tyler to some of the people from our school. His hand never left Jenna’s.
At one point I found myself sitting alone on the couch in Brendon’s living room. He was uproariously dancing on the coffee table, face flushed from the alcohol. I laughed as I watched him, feeling myself relax in the familiarity of his antics.
The couch dipped beside me, and I looked over to see Josh. He smiled at me, waving slightly. “Hey.”
“Hey.”
We fell silent again, both our gazes wandering to Brendon. “So uh- how are you?” Josh asked.
I shrugged, glancing at him, “I’m alright. How are- are you settling in? A big party is probably a lot to deal with after just meeting all of us.”
Josh laughed, and I tried to ignore the way my heart skipped a beat at that. “That’s alright. I like being around people, and it’s probably better meeting everyone all at once this way. Like ripping off a band aid.”
I nodded at that, chuckling to myself. “I suppose so.”
After another small silence, Josh asked me more about myself, like what my interests were, and what type of music I liked. We both bonded over liking the same bands, and he suggested some new ones to me, as well as the fact that we both loved cats, the x-files, and cereal was most definitely it’s own food group. I lost track of time talking to him, it was so easy, and I felt some of my walls dropping. My soulmark itched the entire time.
Suddenly, Brendon plopped himself into my lap, planting a sloppy wet kiss on my cheek. “Y/N!” he yelled, slurring slightly, “Come dance with me!” Josh laughed as Brendon hopped off my lap and grabbed my wrists, pulling me up. We stumbled, and the sleeve on my right arm pushed up slightly. The three of us froze, the colors on my arm clearly visible.
My eyes flew to Josh, who’s gaze was fixed on my mark. My stomach coiled tightly.
“I-is that?” Brendon began, his eyes drifting from my arm to Josh.
Before anything else could be said, I shook myself free of Brendon’s grasp, and bolted from the house. I heard Josh call my name behind me, but I ignored him and kept running, my insecurities running wild inside my head.
“Y/N, please! Stop!” Josh shouted, his footsteps echoing on the empty street behind me. He finally reached me, grabbing my elbow to pull me to a halt. I refused to make eye contact with him, not turning around. He released me when he was sure I would no longer run. The two of us stood there, in the chilly night air, our breaths coming in rapid huffs.
“Can I see?” he asked quietly.
I shook my head, but turned around to face him, eyes still focused on my shoes.
“Why?” he asked, his voice barely above a whisper.
It felt stupid, but tears began to fall, burning my cheeks as they slid down. “Because I- I’m not good enough.”
I could see Josh shake his head in my peripherals. After what felt like an eternity, “Please.” he whispered. “Please, I’ve been waiting for so long... Please don’t hide from me.”
I didn’t respond, but I didn't pull away when Josh gently took my arm. He slowly pushed up my sleeve, each second feeling like an hour. Finally the entirety of my mark was exposed, and I could hear Josh’s breath catch. A sob escaped my lips.
This was it. He would hate me now. He’s probably so upset that it’s me that he gets stuck with. This ugly, weird, awkward girl, who’s not good at anything or worth much. I wouldn’t be surprised if he walked away right there.
But Josh didn't walk away. Instead, he surprised both of us and crashed his lips into mine. Hands gripping desperately at my hips and lower back, drawing me against him. Stars exploded behind my closed eyelids, and my stomach did somersaults. I kissed him back, marveling at the taste of him. There was mint and coffee, and a little bit of sweetness that I couldn't place. He smelled like cinnamon and wood smoke, and heat bloomed in my lower abdomen.
My soulmark no longer itched, but instead burned lightly. It wasn’t an unpleasant feeling, it instead felt so, so right.
When Josh finally came up for air, he leaned his forehead against mine, hands not letting me escape his closeness. “You are the most beautiful, and perfect person that I have ever laid my eyes on. I had a feeling-” He pulled back, tilting his head up to look at the night sky, a wet gleam in his eyes. “I had a feeling, that moving here would be good for me. That something was waiting for me.” He brought his eyes down to meet mine, and I couldn’t look away. “Then when I saw you in class- it sounds so stupid- but my mark itched, and I hoped that it was you.”
I was crying harder now, and Josh gently wiped away the tears that fell, still clutching me tightly to him. “I’m so sorry, I just, I let my insecurities get to me, and I couldn't bring myself to-”
“Shh, it's okay. We all have our insecurities. But I want you to know,” he placed a kiss on my lips again, butterflies jolted through me, “that I will do whatever I can, every day, to show you how perfect you are.”
I nodded, burying my face in his chest, relishing his warmth around me. I mumbled into his chest, and he leaned down, his warm breath on my ear. “What?” he asked gently.
“Is it too early to say that I love you?” I asked.
He laughed, clutching me tighter, as impossible as that seemed.
“You’re my soulmate. You can love me whenever you feel like. And honestly,” Josh cupped my face in his hands, bringing my eyes up to meet his again, “I think I’ve loved you long before I met you.”
I smiled, and met his lips in another kiss.
I never hid my soulmark after that night.
