Tokyo in April is…: Ren Thought He Raped Kazuma for Ten Years

I apologize for the provocative title, but it’s something I want to unpack in this episode. As a Sad Gay Boy Who Watches Too Much Stuff, I want to get into the depths of the horror that Ren has lived with for ten years, and how it informs so much of his behaviors. I have a lot of complicated thoughts about this and will be using direct and sometimes-coarse language to talk about some of these ideas in this post. Please bear that in mind as you continue.

Trigger warnings: sexual assault, self-harm, suicide, child abuse, child disownment.

Ren is such a terribly tragic character. It’s been a long time since we had a gay character so completely unable to accept the love being poured onto him, and I think we need to get into why Ren is so incapable of love that he doesn’t even know how to cook.

It’s Mutual, But They’re Gay

Let’s start with everything through the aftermath of their first time.

We often see the trope of “It’s mutual, they’re just idiots.” I don’t think that applies here. Like with Lee Wan and Shin Ki Tae in Our Dating Sim, Wan didn’t conceive of a reality where Ki Tae reciprocated his feelings. Ren couldn’t ask Kazuma directly if he was also interested in him and had received indication from Kazuma that he was interested in girls.

In a spiral that he would never connect with Kazuma, a kind boy that he loves dearly, he decides to just get it over with and solicits sex from a stranger on the web.

Meanwhile, Kazuma has been nursing a crush on Ren this entire time, but he keeps second-guessing himself because every time Ren invites him somewhere, Ren also covers the fact that he’s angling to be alone with Kazuma by inviting other people around. When asked about girls, he gives the expected answer; we’re all men here, right? When he sees Ren going so far as to solicit sex online, he’s confused.

He chases the guy off, and declares that, if Ren has to do it, to do it with him.

Ren is always holding back with Kazuma, and it hangs over their first time. He apologizes that Kazuma’s first time is with him instead of a girl he might like, and Kazuma’s face drops. Ren asks if they can kiss, and quickly backs off the request. He remains completely still for the kiss, clearly scared of taking too much.

During the act, Kazuma gets overwhelmed with emotions about how the boy he admires so much is having his first time in such a seedy place. He begins to weep, and Ren interprets this as Kazuma being upset that he just did something so intimate with him. He thinks the favor he asked for hurt his friend.

Kazuma has no memory of anything after that night. He got deathly ill, and by the time he was cogent again Ren was gone. For Ren, the horrors are just beginning.

The Horrors

Before we get into this, I think it’s very clever of this show to frame the scenes in the past within this episode as coming from the memory of Ren. I think it gives them permission to go for style, and I think it makes filming easier for everyone. It allows things to be played kind of stilted.

The next morning, Ren realizes that something is wrong with Kazuma and he’s very sick. He does the responsible thing and calls for medical assistance. I can’t imagine how terrified he must have been at that moment. The boy he loves is dying, and now he’s got to tell the adults in his life that he might be the culprit and he’s been told that Kazuma might die. In his mind, he coerced Kazuma into sex, and in conjunction with his waiting around in the rain, enabled him to get deathly ill. A part of him probably wonders if he should have noticed something while they were intimate and sleeping next to each other.

He knows exactly what he’s admitting to, and still goes through with it. He doesn’t like. Kazuma’s life is more important to him than any consequences he might face. He says he forced Kazuma to have sex with him and reports on his lack of food intake, and then Kazuma’s mom slaps him and says to never appear before her son again. He is then summarily disowned by his family, forced to change his name, and sent away to France to be forgotten.

I think it should be noted here that Ren is a bottom. I can’t help but imagine the kind of images the adults int eh room must have conjured when he reported his actions. You know in their minds he forced himself inside of Kazuma as Kazuma struggled weakly. Could they have conceived of some sort of psychological coercion where Kazuma tops him? I don’t think so. They will never understand the sad disconnect between two boys who loved each other.

Seeing that he may never see Kazuma again, Ren has a terrifying moment involving a sharp tool. Thankfully, he fails, and goes to see Kazuma at the hospital. He breaks down crying as he apologizes to an unconscious Kazuma for liking him.

He begs Kazuma to live.

After this, he is sent to France, and Kazuma loses his old phone and his various Tokyo contacts.

That’s what Ren sat on for ten years. His last encounter with the first boy he loved was an emotionally confused sexual encounter followed by a terrifying health incident and ostracization from his family. He thought Kazuma regretted the entire exchange and almost died because of it. He believes he forced his friend to do something against his will. He thinks he raped his friend. He lost his family. He wears a wristband to hide his scars

That was the last ten years for him until he finds Kazuma’s box of research.

Ren Has Few Love Languages Left

Oh, but Kazuma is here! He was looking for him! Kazuma doesn’t regret what they did! He means exactly what he’s been saying this whole time. He missed Ren. He searched for him. It wasn’t just Ren. It wasn’t just in his head. He’s literally begging Ren to let him back in.

I cannot overstate how gentle it was for this show to follow up on such a heavy set of reveals by showing these two in a domestic bubble for most of the remaining episode. Still, I can’t get over how this forces us to see how stunted Ren is by the entire affair.

Ren doesn’t have much game. He doesn’t flirt with Kazuma that much. All he can do is spend time with him and seek reassurance and connection through sex. He doesn’t have a lot of other hobbies, so has no special places to share with Kazuma. He can’t make food for Kazuma to share his affection.

So often in these Japanese shows, food itself is love. Unlike Kakei Shiro, Ren doesn’t know how to cook. He can’t express his affections back to Kazuma in that way. All he has is love of his shows and the ability to spend time with Kazuma. It’s at this point that their Friends With Benefits rules start to break down. Ren spends the next few days living with Kazuma. He doesn’t want to leave him anymore.

They start cooking together and feeding each other food. As a gay man, I’m choosing to read them both feeding each other in a sexual context. We get Kazuma’s voice over saying, “Nothing else mattered. You’re the only thing that’s important to me, Ren,” as Ren smiles at a sleeping Kazuma and strokes his face.

These two are doing so much better that their coworker comments on how good they both have been looking lately!

Final Thoughts

My only goal with this was to write down how deeply sad Ren made me in this past episode. We see so many gays in these shows that are Shiny and Chrome. I find myself often drawn to the gay men in these shows who have suffered, because I have suffered. I carry old wounds on my soul from the gay disappointments of my youth. For all the spectacular sex that these two are having, I am struck with the deep sadness that Ren is just now learning how to express love to someone.

I know what it’s like to feel like you’ve hurt someone because of a misunderstanding and know that you will never be able to do anything to make it right. I know what it’s like to be young and love a boy and think that he doesn’t love you back only to later be told that he was interested. It hurts. It is a permanent ache you feel in the joints in your hands.

I get Ren. I am rooting for him.

okay so myla and kaitlins semi-tragic childhood friends to enemies to friends to maybe-lovers-i-havent-decided-yet

so in the ninelands (basically the land where everyone lives and it's called that cuz there's. nine main nations)

there's sciuridea, which is the weakest. the species that live there are like. small rodents like squirrels (sequians), bunnies (sylvilayans), chinchillas (chillas), mice (muskuleons), and others. (also these aren't like. animals. the people in this universe are like humans but they have certain animal traits. catgirls and catboys and catbees exist it's great)

sciuridea is as weak as it is because caensia doesn't want them to prosper, so lord roald (king of caensia basically) has soldiers there to keep sciurideans from doing "suspicious activity against the state of caensia." they're not havin a good time oof

myla is sequian, meaning she has squirrel-like traits and lives in the land of sciuridea. she's an outstanding student in class and has athletic abilities to match. she gets sent to caensian land to "accomplish the best she could with her skills"

that's where she meets royal lady kaitlin (she's basically princess but eh saying princess sounds boring) and they quickly become best friends.

kaitlin is studying hard on the history of the ninelands and the erasing of the mages and myla thinks it's because kaitlin loves her country a lot. kaitlin just wants to make her father proud really. she wants to do good for her country

aaaand then she realizes that whoops caensia isn't as great as the history books tell her. and while her mother and father are arguing over prophecies or whatever kaitlin runs and leaves without a trace.

myla basically got abandoned. by her only friend. she could be dead for all myla knows. or kidnapped. or anything. and if she chose to leave on purpose then she chose not to let myla know.

myla is upset with this, but she throws herself into her studies and ends up being royal advisor and a high-ranking commander after a few years. she has to grow her hair out long and straighten it and dye it to a darker color because it's "inappropriate for an official such as herself to not."

myla is blinded to caensias wrongdoings because she wants to make kaitlin proud. she wants to take care of what she thought kaitlin loved so dearly while she was gone.

eventually kaitlin runs into alec, they uncover scoriana's and caensia's plans to collaborate and take over the ninelands, and they have to stop it. kaitlins hair is short and dyed pink now and she's wearing "peasant clothes" rather than the overly fancy dresses so no one knows it's her. also it's been like 2 years so.

cue semi-gay fight scenes.

eventually they discover that whoops that's childhood friend and then they work together and commit gay crimes and go to super hell 💖

I know someone who doesn't understand why LGBT representation in media is so important, nor why the LGBT community fights so fiercely for it. She believes that it's "just a cartoon/show/movie/etc", and that while being able to see yourself in a fictional character is nice, it's not really necessary and we shouldn't be getting so upset over negative portrayals of LGBT characters in shows like Voltron because at least we got rep at all. Your thoughts?

First thought? I can’t say. It’s not school appropriate, and you’re asking me to educate. 

Second thought, stories are important. They are agents of change. They teach, they comfort, they empower. 

They tell a young black woman she can lead a coalition. They tell a young disabled man can be the head of a magical robot. They tell a young brown man he has his own strengths and should embrace them. They tells a young nerd she can be accepted and celebrated for her brilliance. 

Stories tell the LGBTIA+ community they can have a happy ending, that they deserve a happy ending.  

Negative portrayals give negative perceptions. I wrote this post earlier, about the damages of negative queer portrayals, and villains and tragic characters who are queer-coded tell our brothers and sisters in the LGBTIA+ community - as well as others - that LGBTIA+ don’t deserve that happy ending. 

And queer, non-white, female, disabled and other minorities get that enough in real life. 

That’s why stories with empowering and positive and true representation are necessary. 

True representation teaches young LGBTIA+ people to embrace themselves, to embrace their sexuality but also to realize they are not defined by it. 

As Juno Dawson writes in “The Sea,” 

I was unaware gay people even existed and, when puberty hit, found myself more than a little lost. I so dearly wish there had been just one book with a character who was a bit like me – just a normal teenage guy who happened to be gay. I would have especially loved one whose sexuality did not define him.

I just know that had there been a diverse range of people like me in books when I was growing up, I wouldn’t have felt abnormal for all those years, which I see now, overwhelmingly, I am not. In 2014, it’s my hope that all young LGBT people can see themselves in fiction and recognise there is a place for them in the world.

There is a place in the world for LGBTIA+ people. There are a place for them in stories, and it’s not as the villain or tragic hero. That’s why stories with true representation are important.  

Finally - tell your friend that it’s soon-to-be 2019. It’s time for her realize that we need to celebrate, not tolerate.

BTS Fanfic Recommendations

Ok, so I don’t know if it’s considered weird to hype up other people when you write fan fiction and basically turn the attention away from yourself but IDK because I’ve been dying to share all my favorite fanfics with you guys! My thoughts — omg, where do I begin? God this book was so beautiful. The character development! The plot! The ROMANCE! AH! It was such a perfect work of art! I never felt bored like at all and normally I get bored pretty easy on long chaptered books like this! She’s also getting the book published! (With different character names obviously and it’s like super edited.) I don’t know what else to say other than GO READ THIS!!! SHE IS THE QUEEN OF YOONMIN!! YOU WONT BE DISAPPOINTED!!!

Hidden Omega

My Thoughts — this book is great! Not only is it super long (over eighty chapters) and still being updated, but the character development is super refreshing. Forewarning though, the author has said that there is a good chance Namjoon won’t end up in the Bangtan Pack but a different one, and originally that made me upset, but with the way she painted the story I actually don’t care what Pack he ends up with; their all beautiful and it’s an amazing book! Lots of drama and angst for you angst lovers out there!

No Spell can Cure Shyness

Description — Yoongi really doesn’t expect the witchboy who sent him an accidental text to be the prettiest boy he's ever seen in all his life. Or the nicest. Or the kindest. Or just the best in every possible way. Painfully shy and (un)smooth as he is, Yoongi decides the best way to approach this Jimin person is in the form of a cat. A cat who can't talk. Great plan, Yoongi.

My Thoughts — The FLUFF!!! I can’t even begin to describe how much I love this book! All of this woman’s works are masterpieces that need to be appreciated! Yoongi is so shy it’s hilarious and he has the most extra reactions to like everything — and and I LOVE!!! YOU need to read it! Stop whatever your doing and go read it!

Saltation

Description — Jimin had grown up watching his mother sort the point-oh-one percent beta defaults into the alpha-omega communities, but that doesn't make being a part of the statistic much easier. He'd be doing okay at this new omega thing if that watchful alpha Min Yoongi could stay out of the situation. He just wants to settle into his new life and finish his useless degree already. Instead, all hell breaks loose.

My Thoughts — This book is the one of the best a/b/o fics I have ever read in my entire life! Alpha’s and Omega’s live separate from Beta’s due to different instincts and Jimin was born in the beta community but presented as an omega. And it’s really funny because He keeps slipping up and doing/saying things that leave everyone else kind of like (0.0) The writing is fantastic! The characters are absolutely riveting as is the plot and the AUTHOR KEEPS TEADING ME ON TWITTER ABOUT HER NEXT UPDATE AND HOLY HELL IM BREAKING DOWN OVER HERE!!!

Jammed

Description —The rational part of Jimin's brain screams at him to remember what his mother said about strangers and vans. My Thoughts — this book! *wheezes from laughter* is so funny! Jimin is trying to make it to Yoongi and Hoseok’s wedding (which he is kind of dreading because Hoseok is trying to set him up with his own best man) and he gets stuck in a blizzard and boom there’s Taehyung! A renowned author that decided to live in his van and travel the world while writing his new book. This book was so funny you guys! I was dying, there was a smut scene and it was pretty great. The whole book was phenomenal and I loved it so much. Because I have literally no self control I’m gonna add a sneak peak.

NU ABO: A Memoir by Park Jimin

My Thoughts — this book was so good! Omega’s are really rare and Jimin is so against the stereotypes put on omega’s and he is CONVINCED that Jungkook thinks of him as a tiny child that needs protection and he’s such a little ball of rage and god it’s so funny and he’s so sarcastic and furious that he’s being forced into this cutesy image (that he refuses to admit he likes) and it’s so cute and hilarious.

In Your Eyes

Rating — Explicit (there’s smut and light dim/sub in this so tread carefully)

Description — On nights where everything seems against him, Jimin wishes he could take Jungkook down a few pegs.

My Thoughts — I originally read this because I was trying to expand my view on what a dom!Jimin would look like for my Bunny Breath book but I actually really liked this a lot. The characterization was good, it wasn’t like most smut oneshots where the characters go at with like literally no push and seems to be mildly dubious consent. This was well thought out and I enjoyed reading it.

A Sheep in Wolf’s Clothing

Pairing — Junghope

Rating — Explicit (there’s smut so tread carefully)

Description — When Jeongguk decides it's time to live out his fantasy of being knotted, he determines that Hoseok is the best (read: least awful) candidate for the job.

My Thoughts — I read this book because I’m a hoe for Junghope. But it’s really good! I remember feeling mildly dubious about it until I got to this really funny scene when Jungkook (a beta) asks Jimin (an omega)if he knows any alpha’s that wouldn’t be weirded out bu having sex with a beta and Jimin’s just like “I know three but your not gonna like it.” And after that it’s a hilarious conversation of them deciding which of their friends would be the least cringe worthy for Jungkook to sleep with. Jimin admits that Hoseok is great and it goes from there. BUT THERE IS A PLOT LINE!!! ITS NOT JUST SMUT!!

Unfamiliars

Pairing — Yoonseok (my library is mostly Yoonseok.)

Rating — Mature (I can’t remember if there’s smut and it’s a long book so I don’t want to go read through all of it. Fuck I totally will but that’s beside the point. Read the tags when you click on the link.)

Description — Hoseok rescues a kitty in a summer storm. Thanks to some weird magic, Yoongi is that kitty. In a tiny apartment full of plants and moonlight, a simple, aching happiness blooms. But with what Jungkook knows, how long can the happiness last?

My Thoughts — this is so cute! Yoongi is just minding his own business when he accidentally steps into a warlocks spell pentagram and gets turned into a cat by Jin, he positively freaks the fuck out runs away, gets picked up by Hobi and things go from there. It’s so cute and soft and ima go read it BYE!!!!

Bad at Love

Pairing — Yoonseok with side Namjin.

Rating — Explicit (there is smut and definite don/sub so tread carefully.)

Description —Yoongi was pretty sure he was straight. Pretty sure (And not remotely interested in love or Jung Hoseok.) Alternatively ; that fic where yoon thinks he's straight and he's a bit of a slut and keeps fucking girls tho he likes hoseok and seoks a Patient Loving Gay who waits and Supports yoon through his Gay Crisis.

My Thoughts — this book is full of so much emotion and general truth. I love it so much, I cried several times when reading and admittedly geared up at the end. Hoseok was so sweet and patient and he had to literally teach Yoongi that it was ok to trust him and crap now I’m crying.

Take Me to the Edge

Author — Nasobem

Pairing — Yoonseok

Rating — Explicit (there is smut and Don/sub undertones so tread carefully)

Description —Yoongi takes a pointed step backwards and glares at "Hobi". "What the fuck kind of name is that," he says, "and don't touch me." Namjoon makes a funny noise. Yoongi ignores it for the sake of eviscerating "Hobi" with his stare. It seems to be weirdly ineffective. Or Yoongi is hired to work Tech Support and Security for Jung Corp and it'd honestly be pretty chill if it wasn't for this one obnoxiously handsome dude whose life mission it seems to be to bother Yoongi until he breaks.

My Thoughts— I love this book. Yoongi is such an angry little bean and Hoseok literally just wants to make him happy — the Maknae Line are little shits but what’s new there? This whole book is amazing. I wish I could find a good Vmin/Vhope/Minjoon/Sugakookie book like this. *cries*

Our Burned Bridges

Author — tendershipping (nothing about her ships are tender! *sobs*)

Pairing — Vminkook (she’s the Vmin queen)

Rating — Mature (no smut but brutal themes so tread carefully)

Description —Agent Jeon Jeongguk is given a cover story and assigned to guard amnesiac Kim Taehyung. (Taehyung has nightmares most nights after he wakes, at first. He screams and cries names Jeongguk doesn’t recognize, always one in particular—Jimin.)

My Thoughts— I’m, I’m so EMOTIONAL!!! I read it and was a literal mess halfway through and IT JUST GOT MORE DARK and *chokes* Vmin we’re MARRIED and enter Jimin who seems so bitter and mean and sarcastic but he’s really just broken and angry about things and — go read this. It has a happy ending to so win win.

First Ship you ever wrote fic for: uhhhh, I don’t remember... so I’ll use my oldest tumblr fic posted which was... Dragon Age, Cullen x Warden(/Inquisitor)

Ship you write the most now: that’d be a fat lot of nothing at this particular moment in time... but I guess most recently? that’d be quite a few things that I’ve written but not shared for both Alina x Joker (after that, probably Vax x Dorian)

Ship you read the most now: I haven’t read a ton of fics lately, it all depends highly on my mood and what my (for lack of a better way of putting it) “otp of the month” is at the time. at this exact moment in time, I’ve been looking for whatever I can find for Hackerkill (which ain’t much :c) and also I was up way too late the last couple nights hunting Malik x Jensen fics for Deus Ex *cough*

Newest Ship: brand newest of the new would be Malik x Jenson, I guess

Rare Ship you wanna read more of: H A C K E R K I L L pls, I’m dying for good, beautiful Sombra and Reaper content that isn’t creepy fanon dictated father/daughter weirdness *shudder*

Your taboo Ship: according to the hellish OW fandom, Dva76 is taboo... and Hackerkill and, well, fuck me, basically anything that has either a) an age gap or b) is not gay  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I do have another one that’s not OW and pretty damn taboo, but I keep that dirty little secret to myself (but if you look hard enough thru my blog, you might maybe find a post that has it, but gl finding it in this mess, lmao) They never met in canon Ship: hmmmm, I really can’t think of one? honestly, I think only some OW ships might (at the time of doing this meme) fall into this category since all The Lore isn’t out yet so not every character has met every other character (yet..). but ehhhh, idk if I’d really qualify that as Never Met Ever

Your unexpected ship: Lavellan x Samson, I reallllly didn’t expect to start shipping it as hard as I did. Same with Mahariel x Carver, or hell, even Lavellan x Carver... I end up with a lot of unexpected ships tbh. 

The ship you always forget to give love to: Hawke x Sebastian, I love them dearly, but they don’t get near-enough of the love they deserve. 

Ship your OC with a canon character (if applicable): WELL... if I exclude template PC type as the OC (ie Shepard, Ryder, Hawke, Wardens, Inquisitors...), that’d be, uhhhh Anika x Lavellan & Olivia x Sera for certain. on the spot coming up with something? i’d be hop on board for siana x vetra or siana x kandros (or both, both is always good)

A ship you’re embarrassed to ship: UHHHH, I don’t know that I have one? Who has time for embarrassment anyhow? Embrace the ship love ;D (and no, the taboo one I’m not sharing doesn’t embarrass me so much as I’d prefer not to incur the wrath of tumblr or upset friends that I know would/do hate the ship)

Your most romantic Ship: Alina x Joker? I think maybe yes. Them or I’m even inclined to say Hawke x Sebastian 

Your sexiest ship: UHHHH fuckin... god, probably Ash and Cullen?? Or there’s also Jane Shep x James 

Your most tragic ship: Tamlen x Isethari (why did I ever think getting that invested in it was a good idea, ffff)

A ship you want more content for: Liara x Feron, Hackerkill... and pretty much all my ships. I’ll take more for all of them bc I’m a greedy fucker ;p
