Desde que comencé a trabajar como ilustradora, siempre me ha preocupado romper con los roles de género en mis ilustraciones. Me gusta representar a padres, maestros, enfermeros y otros hombres en roles de cuidadores, hombres haciendo dieta, mujeres en todo tipo de roles y de todas las edades haciendo cosas guays, mujeres feas, mujeres gordas, mujeres empoderadas, haciendo el ridículo, mujeres y niñas nerd y, en definitiva, haciendo cosas random en general. Es algo con lo que en España estamos más sensibilizados, sobre todo en los últimos años, y que los clientes piden y te agradecen. . En 2015 hice mi primer encargo para EEUU. Se trataba de ilustrar el menú de la librería-bar @thewilddetectives en Dallas. Eran varias escenas con muchos personajes en diferentes situaciones que transcurrían en la tienda. Disfruté muchísimo dibujando y a los dueños les gustó mucho. Imprimieron los menús y los pusieron en funcionamiento, hasta que llegó el siguiente comentario: “Sólo salen blancos”. ¡Y era verdad! A pesar de que en las fotos que me habían pasado de la librería aparecían personas blancas y negras, ni el director de arte ni yo habíamos caído en la cuenta (él también es español). Lo rectificamos y me di cuenta de que no bastaba con colorear la piel de algunos personajes: tuve que dibujar tipos de pelo y rasgos que nunca había dibujado y no era fácil integrar en mi estilo. Desde entonces he tratado de incorporar también personajes racializados en mis ilustraciones, lo cual las ha enriquecido muchísimo. . Es algo que en España nunca me habían pedido para ningún trabajo. Sin embargo, cuando comencé a trabajar para medios de EEUU me lo encontraba explícitamente en el briefing: rango de edad de los personajes, diversidad de etnias y complexiones físicas. En una ocasión bastante reciente me pidieron intercambiar las etnias de dos personajes porque estaba cayendo en un cliché sin saberlo, así que aún sigo aprendiendo. Es difícil asumir que somos racistas cuando no lo hacemos de manera intencionada, pero es necesario que lo hagamos para cuestionar nuestra manera de actuar y comenzar a hacer cambios. . Una de las cosas favoritas de mis últimos libros son los autorretratos. Normalmente es algo que se hace al final, cuando el resto del libro está terminado, así que lo hago en un estado de relajación de “ya no queda nada” y suele reflejar lo que es para mí el tono del libro o lo que más gracia me hace de él.
