The Thing (1982) When a group of researchers into Antarctica come into contact with a assimilating alien, they must have their wits about them to subdue the enemy and save humankind. It’s been a long time coming, I’ve had this for a long time and have been meaning to watch it for even longer, finally I have and it didn’t disappoint! Here’s why... What I loved about the thing is it’s simplicity in its approach, but it’s ability to completely shift at any moment, throwing you off guard and taking you aback! There’s some striking alien forms in this and some scenes that make your skin scrawl, especially if you don’t like spiders. It’s ability to combine not only visual elements but audio cracks and whips etc make this even more successful! Speaking of audio, our good from Ennio Morricone is back on the score for this, and delivers sumptuously. Morricone picks his moments to place his music, a wave of tense and suspenseful synth that sets off its scenes with great actors! The films greatest asset is the layers it has, watching this film, paying attention to little details, to personnel, to clues and having witness that not only is there the immediate threat, but the internal battle the group face is genius. It’s easy to see how this has spawned so many tributes even down to an episode of South Park! Whilst I liked the ending, I also think it isn’t for everyone, some like the open ended style of ending films, some hate the ambiguity, so it can split opinion. It’s also quite hard to place areas as you never really see the whole building or have clarity into the area, again, ambiguity pros and cons. Overall, The Thing is well worth it’s plaudits, it’s a nerve jangling, thought provoking, gory story that is full of twists that will challenge your inner thoughts and your stomach!
