Hi there! I found your blog in the hedgehog tag a while back, and I was just wondering if I could ask you where you got your hedgehog? I really really want one and my mum says if I can find where to get one and all the necessities for it, she'll let me have one. Thank you :)

Hi! :) Well, it depends on where you live, really! I did some research, but here is a breeder list for the USA!

As for their necessities:

A cage, or aquarium. If it is a wire cage, be sure that it has a plastic bottom. I really wouldn't suggest an aquarium as the ventilation for them is very poor. You don't need a HUGE cage, but a bigger cage is better. I have a cage suited for a small rabbit for my hedgehog and it's HUGE but leaves her plenty of room to run around and such. Eventually, I'm going to have to downsize her cage once I bring her home home and what not, but until that time, that one will do. I got very lucky in getting this cage on sale for about $70... it was honestly the cheapest one there is. 

Food. You can feed your hedgehog either hedgehog food that you can find in a pet store. I feed Lilo cat food. I use Purina. Just be sure to make sure that when the ingredients are listed, the first ingredient listed is a meat and not a meat by-product... example, I feed Lilo Purina chicken & rice. First ingredient is just "chicken". 

You can either bowl train or bottle train your hedgehog for water. Either way, it's just he way you start them. I find it easier to keep Lilo bottle trained as it is much less of a mess. 

The bedding is something very different. I would suggest fleece bottoms as they are washable, reusable, safer and much easier to clean up. However, I know we can't all use them and I, in fact, don't use them as I live at school and can't really afford to wash them on their own. So, I use wood shavings for her bedding. DO NOT GET CEDAR. It can be very dangerous to the hedgehogs. I change mine out every two weeks to keep it fresh.

Toys, wheels, entertainment: I have a chinchilla size wheel (12") for Lilo. I use a "Silent Sleeper" wheel which is solid bottom, which is what you want. It is very dangerous for hedgies to have mesh/wire wheels as their little footsies or nails can get stuck ): I also have a bigger igloo for Lilo to hide in. I would suggest a play pen of some sorts for when you want to bring her out and let her run around a bit. This way it keeps your hedgie in a contained area but still gives them some freedom. I also have a snuggle sack for her that she likes to curl up in and i let her curl up in on long drives home (as I live two hours from school so when I do bring her home with me, that's where she likes to spend the car ride) or just when I have her out with me when I'm reading or doing homework. You can find some GREAT homemade snuggle sacks from EllenCho on Etsy. (http://www.etsy.com/shop/ellencho) Toys, to be honest, is not my forte. Lilo is not a big fan of toys, really. I do have a small cat toy that I be sure to keep an eye on her for when she's using it, which is not very often. Toilet paper tubes/paper towel tubes is true! Lilo loves those. I get nervous though so I keep them cut open so she can't get stuck in them.

Treats. OKAY, this is a hard one for me. I'm paranoid and what not and my Lilo is unlike other hedgies and does NOT like mealworms. (I've seriously wasted about $40 on them and she refuses to touch them). So, I'm still kind of experimenting with what to give her. I freak out though because it's always a different response for everyone. Someone's suggest meat with no seasoning or anything (but cooked) such as hamburger or chicken. I've also been suggested scrambled eggs (again, no seasoning just the eggs) so I need to try those out. Fruits with seeds in it, though, are not good for them.

Cleaning: So, be sure to clean their cage out of poop everyday. I wash her wheel about once a week as the poop tends to congregate there. I've gotten Lilo "potty" trained so that she usually only goes in her igloo if it's not on her wheel which makes it easier to clean up. I tend to give Lilo a bath about every two weeks (usually when I clean her cage/switch over to new bedding). I use the Wal-mart brand of Aveeno moisturizing body wash with oatmeal. She hates baths and is grumpy with me for a while after them (but she's also so damn cute when taking baths!)
