He didn’t know if something was wrong or if he could even ask seeing as how she was stumbling when speaking. It wasn't like it was his business, but he wanted to help if he could the least he could do was call her a cab so she would get home safetly. "Can I call you a cab? You should...get home."

It was the city, and he had seen so many faces today, and most had been solemn, because, they all remembered what had happened to him. He didn’t want their pity, but he replied to their apologies with a blade in his throat which he swallowed every single time he saw something that reminded him of his dearly departed father.

He had no idea how he was going to face the thought of getting warm by a fire in the coming winter months, and for all he was concerned, he would have preferred to freeze than face the thought of that fire again.

It was near closing time and he allowed himself to hunch down over the edge of the counter and his teeth found the edge of his lip, his bones lurching as he remembered…as he had tried to stop…

He still had bandages on his hands from where he’d tried to move debris to reach---

And the bell chimed to signal a customer’s arrival and he bolted up, the act forcing tears that came, hot and fresh to his eyes as he surveyed the woman with hair the color of…

Fire.

“Good evening,” he managed to say, hoping she wouldn’t notice his lapse into sorrow. “What brings you in tonight?”
