like i am going to try and be less apologetic when i ramble about personal project on here bc while it’s absolutely not the same as it originally was it has been an idea that has been a little worm in my head for probably ten fucking years. and life has gone on around me and i have changed as a person and gotten involved in some many other things yadda yadda but it has stayed! perhaps it’s something that should have been over and created ages ago but despite that it is still there, which feels like it means something.
#ari speaks#oc: tmf#like. the idea did not exist at that point but one of the characters is originally an oc i made in fucking 8th grade.#CAVEAT STRONG CAVEAT it's a bit of a ship of theseus situation there though.#she is technically the same oc but also her appearance and character has been picked apart and retooled so many times so. yknow.#kept swapping bw webcomic and novel and webcomic and illustrated novel and something between the two#(while also daydreaming about it as a like. open world video game#but the first time i found out about cog i did try to code personal project into a choice game#so the fact that years later i have settled on coding it as an IF is very funny to me.#whether i ever share it is another thing. but.#perhaps rather than this being a product of a cringey teen it was. an idea that i was toying with a little too early.

Desire for Peace Webcomic
I'm not the strongest guy out there, so I don't think I can bring myself to finish this. Drawing Dionysus is already a pain.
I've been seeing people make versions of Dionysus where he either didn't tell Theseus to leave Ariadne behind and Theseus did it on his own, or that he did tell him, because he knew Theseus wasn't a great guy. I want to let everyone know that DFP Dionysus most definitely told Theseus to leave Ariadne behind. Not because he could sense he wasn't a great person, or that he didn't want him in the way of getting with Ariadne, but because he thought it would be dramatic to have the hero of the story abandon her, as the god of theater and this version of him being disconnected from reality. DFP Dionysus' madness is a very prominent characteristic about him. And my gods are still questionable people, I mean, Hermes killed a tortoise when he was a baby, steals stuff, killed a guy in his sleep, and what not. He's a hardened criminal.

vengeance would have been a perfect special if not for doc's death, and i think the reason for that is like. it changes vengeance from a fun sort of "optional" epilogue tv movie (that also doubles as a sizzle reel for andras to pitch a fifth season) to something that irrevocably changes the directions of the characters' lives. if this is the last entry in wynonna earp then doc is dead, wynonna has lost the love of her life, alice grows up without her father. it changes the beautiful ending of s4 - something that was so ruthlessly, defiantly hopeful when it was borne of a genre and a timeframe in which shock value and grimdark character death were the norm, when it was filmed in the middle of a devastating pandemic - into something much more cynical.
now, let me tell you about homestuck.
i love it when stories engage with their role as stories, and two projects that have done that (which also not so coincidentally had massive tumblr followings) are steven universe and, yes, homestuck -- specifically their followups, steven universe: future and the homestuck epilogues/homestuck^2: beyond canon.
steven universe future is a series that posits, "what happens when there's no one left to fight and you have to face yourself?" it's something that existed to tie up the loose ends left by steven universe's hasty cancellation/ending - and so it looks at an action hero's struggles with ptsd when he isn't saving the world anymore. it recontextualizes everything we thought was just another action scene, just another monster fight, just another thing he won with love and kindness and great, great injury to himself, and says, no, this hurt him, you cannot take on the world for yourself, you deserve a good life too. it's in conversation with steven universe's endless empathy and self-sacrifice and doesn't ridicule it but acknowledges that it's a philosophy that you can only hold for so long before you crack.
it's a lovely show that, while much darker than the original series, still ultimately ends on a hopeful note. of course steven isn't going to drive off into the sunset and never have any problems again. he's a person. he's going to drive away when it's already nighttime, and he's going to phone his therapist, and he's going to have good days and bad ones and he's never going to have some clean break from the things that still haunt him but he'll be okay.
the homestuck epilogues are bad, and they're mean-spirited, and they spit in the face of audiences who wanted happy endings for the characters. they're written to mimic ao3 fanfiction, and pretty openly mock the fandom and the people who got homestuck to this point in the first place.
creator andrew hussie thankfully seemed to realize that and changed course with homestuck^2: beyond canon, where they started making it a visual webcomic series again, and it started grappling more directly with homestuck as a story.
the first shot of homestuck^2 is of a spaceship with "theseus" scrawled onto the side. the title itself isn't "homestuck 2," it's homestuck squared. homestuck multiplied by itself. it's a writing team - people who started out as fans of homestuck and are now arbiters of it - with only minimal involvement from the original creator. who determines what is and isn't homestuck? is it the god-creator who wrote himself into the story, then wrote himself being killed off? is it this new writing team? is it you? after all, homestuck itself started with audience prompts. somebody who is not andrew hussie named john egbert. somebody who is not andrew hussie gets to decide how it continues, and if it ends, and why.
"misty, what the whiskey-shooting hell does any of this have to do with wynonna earp?"
what's weird about vengeance is that it doesn't do any of that. and in fact its very existence is antithetical to doc's death speech - it, like doc, is something that's dodged death. it's a followup to a show with one of the most satisfying series finales in recent memory. it's nothing so cynical as a cash grab (as i've seen people on the tag posit) - everyone involved genuinely loves this show. but it's basically a ninety-minute wynonna earp episode. aside from a few brief references and nods to the fans - waverly saying "welcome home, wynonna" - it's not interested in the three and a half years between the end of the show and this new special. it's not interested in whether it should exist, or how long people fought for it to exist. it does explore avenues that the series didn't have time to look into - wynonna's traumatic childhood, the lack of support from the adults in her life - but it's not looking at What "wynonna earp" is. it's not a story about Wynonna Earp (2016-2021), a SyFy Original Series that crafted lifelong friendships and conventions and stories and art and romances and careers and acted as a beacon of hope for thousands of young people during dark times. it's a story about wynonna earp, the character, who doesn't know if she can be a good mom to alice, who hurts the people she loves, who loves those people so, so fiercely she'll literally go to hell and back for them.
and i don't like that her ending is one full of grief. that doesn't feel fair to me.
but that's what season 5 is for, right?

general thoughts on people making ocs inspired by yours?
WELL ITS A MORE COMPLEX QUESTION THAN PEOPLE MIGHT THINK I FEEL LIKE. while it's true i'm a solo-acting individual, which means that inspiration is way more of a grey area than, say, aping off large corporations (so, like, making an oc that's "basically just this character from a comic" is probably gonna raise less eyebrows if its a marvel comic than if its one persons webcomic. right.) i feel like ive seen a lot of very strange "oc theft" arguments and stuff on the internet that makes me think differently about the matter overall.
like- okay. take asma, for example. they're my own personal take on the demon asmodeus, of the seven deadly sins, which is already something that many people have done. but then even when you look at specific traits of THEIRS, like them being a pink demon of lust- can i claim that as "exclusively mine"? of course not. people have done it before me, and people will do it after me. but even after THAT, asma was still inspired by other stuff in my life! so i think trying to apply this Copyright-Esque Restriction on drawing inspiration isnt really my thing. even saying "obviously dont just copy them exactly" is tricky for me because then it kinda becomes a ship of theseus thing.
i guess my thoughts on it are i get inspired by others and people can get inspired by me however they like. im fine with it and endorse it because i'd rather let people be creative than trying to draw a line on what exactly is Completely, Wholly Mine. cos thats impossible. and if that means that a few ocs that are almost exactly like mine slip through the cracks because their definition of 'inspiration' is different than mine? im fine with that.

moots and mythostumblr visitors please consider (long read but hear me out PLEASE-):
a mythos webcomic that takes place in a kind-of-modernized underworld in which, as elysium is becoming more dangerous due to the restlessness of its inhabitants (majority being previous heroes with a thirst for battling, and probably killing too) resulting in them turning a bit... violent and chaotic, orpheus is getting tired of staying there. he has been separated from eurydice because hades decided she wasn't worth of being in elysium while orpheus was, so orpheus is in big sad mode (trying to cope but not really succeeding).
almost as if it was fate (prob was), one night he's saved by achilles, and eventually they learn they are in the same exact situation (he got separated from patroclus). orpheus then convinces achilles they need to do something about this, and they decide to go on a trip to the house of hades to ask him to a-) change their realms so that they can spend eternity with their lovers and b-) stop all the bs that's happening in elysium.
but hades doesn't wish to be bothered about these kinds of matters. in fact, this alone will not make charon take them to the house. so they do what they gotta do! they leave elysium. illegally. and then proceed to be chased by the underworld's surveillance guards who are no other than the heroes that were turned into constellations, which includes!! heracles!! he hates achilles for, his words, "stealing his spot of best hero of the greeks" (this hatred is one-sided) and oh boy, will he do everything he can to stop them on their tracks!! (there's... an additional reason of why he's so against it. wont spoil though)
in this project you could expect lots of orpheus x eurydice and patrochilles (obviously) but also heracles x hylas, icarus being a cutie patootie, theseus being rightfully called out for being a piece of garbage, trans achilles, and... patroclus with a cat. that can turn into a monstrous panther. her name is belladona :]
this is a thing i've been working on for the past few months, it's still in planning phase but i want to see if people vibe with it before actually investing a lot of time in this project! ^-^
(if for some reason you consider art quality to be a factor in whether you'll read a comic or not, here's some art i made for this project already:)

you have me curious about phoebus and what he did to be rejected (if you feel like talking about it)
Ok so. I didn't think this through at all because he's a character from a webcomic project that's currently in development and we don't really want to spoil the fun before the story starts. But I checked with my friend/co-writer Iana and she authorized me to share the following:
This is a story about a dragon who threatens to destroy a kingdom, a princess locked in a tower, and the prince-knight in shining armor who comes to save the day. The knight's name is Phoebus, a young adult with a charming smile and years of training in slaying magical creatures.
This is not his story. This is the dragon's story.
Codename "Misdragon" (the misadventures of the dragon princess and her emotional support boy -- working title) is a fantasy pastiche-parody romcom of medieval fairy tales with heavy inspiration from greek and roman mythology, bad (complimentary) fantasy webtoons and other things. It both celebrates and subverts the genre conventions because Iana and I are both huge fantasyheads and love playing around with these ideas.
Phoebus of Apollyon is the main antagonist in Misdragon, embodying the archetypes of Prince Charming and the White Knight. He was inspired by the greek myth of Theseus, as well as a couple other villainous characters I consider to be spoilers. The idea of his character was to get a hero archetype, completely unchanged, and reframe him to be an absolutely despicable villain. And we did that by placing him directly against our protagonist and designated Minotaur, the dragon princess Jade of Scherling Kingdom. (A lot about Jade goes into spoiler territory, but Phoebus' arrival is the worst thing to happen to her, and trust me she's gone through a lot)
Design-wise, I struggled for a bit but eventually landed on something meant to evoke both "white hair and trauma" male leads from webtoons and some JRPG heroes. He was super fun to figure out; so much of his design was dictated by what we have in his backstory which has HUGE third act spoilers so unfortunately I can't discuss it here. Instead take this exchange between me and Iana (who at this point had found Phoebus' character and what he represents so repugnant that she couldn't think about him without getting angry and had to hand him over so I'm the one to write him):
But the short of it is: i love my horrible son
#phoebus#misdragon#fun fact: we lowkey have a modern day AU of this and you would never guess his profession#a right wing conspiracy podcaster.#IANA JUST SAID HE'D BE PART OF THE MANOSPHERE#Help lmfao#renah

Went on an AO3 Rampage Spree and this is what I got
First up, I wrote this Theseus webcomic fic, parodying the famous fable, The Boy Who Cried Wolf: https://archiveofourown.org/works/49900531
Aside from that, an old Shrek parody fic that sat in my phone for years, unadulterated. It's still in its first chapter though: https://archiveofourown.org/works/49926301

Okay so I’m now entertaining the concept of a romance webcomic about Theseus from Greek Mythology but he falls in love with a hot anime boy Minotaur
#I mean just think of the potential daddy issues a brooding anime cow boy Minotaur could have#featuring Ariadne as the ultimate wingwoman for her brother and this handsome hero who just came to town

Photo
[Image ID: The cover of a comic book and an interior page. The cover depicts a silhouette of a minotaur against the backdrop of a star-studded dark cyan sky. A shooting star streaks across, overlapping with the Minotaur’s eye into a prism of sparkles. In black letters with glowing blue outline reads the title “Asterion”, and at the bottom of the page reads “written by Nobody, illustrated by Cecil G. The interior page is a 4 panel comic depicting a Fat, blue-haired brown woman walking through knee-high glowing water in a rusty red, decrepit facility. She carries a loop of red cord on her shoulder. Captions read “It’s easy to be alone down here. Nobody wants to make friends in a job with an expiry date. It’s just me and the filthy water, now. ...And the star, groaning in the dark. It’s hungry.” End ID.]
NEW COMIC OUT!
A star is trapped underground, and a woman is conscripted into serving it until the light from its core eats away at her body-- but she's resolved to defy her exploitation. ASTERION is a science-fiction retelling of the Minotaur, topping out at 16 full-color pages.
This is my second comic of 2022, and the first comic I’ve created where I’m not the author as well!
